Twitter ‘fact-checks’ US President Trump’s tweet on election victory, ends up spreading misinformation: Here is how

Donald Trump is yet to offer a concession speech and on Sunday, it again became apparent that a concession speech was unlikely anytime soon. The sitting US President reminded the world he had not conceded yet and asserted that there was a long way to go. And as sure as clockwork, Twitter dutifully reminded everyone that the claims about election fraud were disputed pretending as though people were not already aware of the dispute.

“I concede NOTHING!
-Donald Trump

Twitter, of course, has been censoring the US President for quite some time. But it was only in the aftermath of the counting of votes that the extent to which they would go to actually became apparent. The social media platform was basically censoring Donald Trump left, right and centre.

In the process, however, Twitter itself became a source of massive misinformation. In response to a tweet by Donald Trump where he said, “I won the election,” the social media platform claimed that “official sources” have called the elections differently. On clicking the label, Twitter takes one to a media report that projects Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 US presidential elections.

“Official sources” have said Joe Biden has won, claims Twitter

Needless to say, the media is not an official source and the media has no role to play in deciding the results of an election. That Twitter is treating the mainstream media, which has been remarkably hostile to Donald Trump during the course of his presidency and spread fake news against him on a daily basis, as an ‘official source’ is a matter of extreme concern to say the least.

As top US legal analyst Jonathan Turley pointed out earlier in the month, “We are finishing only the second of four stages in an election for president. After the voting stage, states began the tabulation stage. We will soon enter the canvass stage, in which local districts confirm their counts and face challenges or recounts. Finally, there is the certification stage, in which final challenges can be raised. In other words, Trump is not deceased yet.”

That was written eight days ago. Currently, recounts are underway in some state and legal suits in others. It’s only after Constitutional processes have been exhausted that the official results of the elections will be known. The results of these elections are still disputed and it is not legitimate at all to treat the media as an ‘official source’.

It is pertinent to mention here about the 2000 US Presidential elections when Republican Candidate George W. Bush faced off against Democratic nominee Al Gore. That was a disputed election as well and the results were not known for over a month and was ultimately decided by a Supreme Court verdict in favour of Bush.

Therefore, Trump’s refusal to concede the elections yet is clearly not as unprecedented as the mainstream media and the Democrat Party is trying to make it appear with help from social media platforms. While it seems extremely unlikely that Donald Trump will remain the president for a second term, officially, he is not out of the race yet.

‘I’m going cut you like Samuel Paty’: Minor Muslim student threatens school teacher in France during discussion on freedom of expression

Days after the barbaric beheading of teacher Samuel Paty on the streets of Paris by a terrorist for showing the cartoons of Prophet Mohammad to his students, a 14-year-old Muslim student in France has threatened his history-geography teacher with a similar fate, reports a local French newspaper.

The French police have arrested the student from La Grange du Bois college in Savigny-le-Temple, France after he allegedly told his teacher in class: “I’ll cut you up like Samuel Paty”. According to reports, the teacher, during a class discussion on freedom of expression, showed pictures of demonstrations relating to the attack on the satirical newspaper, Charlie Hebdo. This is when the student threatened his teacher with Samual Paty like fate.

The “shocked” teacher alerted the principal of the school , who in turn informed the French police. After being arrested, th student, who was found carrying a black electric pulse pistol, reportedly told the police that he was singing “a rap song about Samuel Paty” by some rapper named Maka.

The teacher who, along with the school authorities filed a written complaint against the student, said that previously on two occasions he had already pardoned the students “behavioural problems”.

The arrested student who has been charged for the offence to threaten to kill another person is also charged for carrying a category D prohibited weapon.

Meanwhile, the Inspectorate of the Seine-et-Marne academy has come out in support of the teacher and said: “A sanction will be taken with regard to the pupil, according to what the disciplinary council decides.”

High-school teacher Samuel Paty beheaded amidst chants of ‘Allahu Akbar’ in Paris

Last month, a high-school teacher Samuel Paty was beheaded by an Islamic terrorist in the French capital Paris for allegedly shown caricatures of the Prophet of Islam to his students. A Muslim youth stabbed a 47-year-old teacher in his throat while shouting “Allahu Akbar”. The attacks occurred at the suburb of Conflans-Saint-Honorine, northwest of Paris on Friday. The terrorist was identified as an 18-year-old Muslim youth, allegedly belonging to Chechnya, Russia. Shockingly, the attacker had also taken to social media to post the images of the victim’s severed head, which was later removed by the authorities.

The barberic attack on Samuel Paty was a grim reminder on how Islamists have often used Prophet Mohammed cartoons as an excuse to carry out attacks across the globe.

Uttar Pradesh: Haryana Congress leader accused of shooting 3 cows and killing one in farmhouse, case filed

A case has been filed against former Haryana minister and Congress leader Nirmal Singh in Uttar Pradesh’s Saharanpur. Singh is accused of shooting 3 cows at a farmhouse which had led to the death of one of them. The complaint was filed against Singh at Behat Kotwali police station in the town for shooting cows. The incident pertains to three days ago, after which several Hindu organisations hit the streets protesting against the Congress leader.

As per a news report published in ‘Dainik Jagran’, the incident occurred on Thursday evening last week, i.e November 11, 2020. The police were immediately informed about the incident but they visited the spot the next morning. The police officials claimed that the incident belonged to Haryana, and therefore a case cannot be filed in Uttar Pradesh.

However, enraged by the Congress leader’s vile action of slaughtering cows, who are considered as a holy animal by Hindus, several Hindu organisations staged a demonstration and conveyed their vigorous opposition to the incident to UP CM Yogi Adityanath.

On Saturday, Bajrang Dal and Vishwa Hindu Parishad activists reached Kotwali with the victim and demanded to register a case of cow slaughter against the Congress leader. However, they were sent back by the police officials after they alleged that the incident pertained to Haryana. However, the activists and demonstrators ploughed on with their demonstration, using the help of social media websites to mobilise support and apply pressure on the police to act in the case.

Though a case has been registered in Uttar Pradesh, there is a lack of clarity among the demonstrators whether the proceedings will be initiated in Uttar Pradesh itself or will the case be transferred to Haryana. In the complaint lodged by the victim side, Singh owns a farmhouse located on the Haryana-UP border. It has been alleged that on the day of the incident, 3 cows accidentally strayed into Singh’s farmhouse to drink water. Singh was present at the time. The victim claims that Singh had shot bullets at the cows, killing one of them. 2 of them are still missing.

Nirmal Singh’s farmhouse is prone to disputes

As per Journalist Sachin Gupta, the aforementioned farmhouse of former minister Nirmal Singh is prone to disputes. Two years ago, a case of an innocent girl being murdered and raped at the farmhouse had come to the fore. Three years ago, an FIR was filed against 11 including the former minister in the Yamuna sand mining dispute. Overall, there have been several allegations of the farmhouse being a hub of illegal activities. In some reports, it is also being said that the condition of two cows is serious and they are also shot at allegedly by Singh.

It is pertinent to note here that earlier cow slaughter accused were able to secure bail because of the provision of 7 years of imprisonment. This provision was altered to rigorous imprisonment of 10 years in June 2020 following a spate of unabated cow slaughter incidents. After the amendment, the accuse will not be able to secure bail. Also, the amended law has increased the fine to Rs 5 lakh from earlier Rs 3 lakh. Besides, Uttar Pradesh has even more stringent laws for cow slaughter and cattle smuggling and whoever is found indulging in the two are publicly discredited with their photos posted on the streets and at public places.

Pope Francis caught ‘liking’ a bikini model’s bawdy picture on Instagram

Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church and sovereign of the Vatican City State, was recently caught ‘liking’ a sexually titillating picture of a bikini model named Natalia Garibotto. The official Instagram account of Pope Francis is making the headlines after eagle-eyed social media users pointed out that he had like a racy picture of a bikini model.

One of the social media users, Barstool Sports, was sharp enough to spot Pope Francis’ online indulgences and shared a screen recording showing the pope’s Instagram name in the likes section of her photo. The account shared the screen recording with caption “Pope Francis is horny as hell”. “Franciscus”, the official Instagram handle of Pope Francis was seen in the list of accounts who had liked the picture.

In the picture, Natalia was seen wearing suspenders and an outfit resembling a Catholic school girl.

When Natalia Garibotto was informed about the ‘like’ on her picture by Pope Francis, she found the situation amusing. She jocularly noted, “At least I’m going to heaven”, after Barstool Sports’ tweet showing Pope Francis among thousands of those who had liked her picture on Instagram.

It is not clear though whether the ‘like’ from the Instagram account of the bishop of Rome was accidental or intentional. Shortly after social media users created a fuss over the ‘like’ by Pope Francis, the photo was unliked by the head of the Catholic Church.

Twitter users react after Pope Francis liked a lewd post

The incident had the Twitter users in conflict as some called out the Pope on the issue while others criticised the Twitter user Barstool Sports for his comment against the pope. One of the Twitter users lambasted Barstool Sports, asking them to immediately take down the tweet.

However, another said, “That’s my kind of pope”.

Still another user took a dig at the Pope, saying he’s got 83 years to catch on. The comment was in reference to an announcement made by Pope Francis in which he had said masturbation is no longer a sin. The screenshot of the same announcement was shared in the tweet.

One Twitter user commented, “Even the holiest of men can’t resist”.

Commenting on how eventful and unexpected 2020 has turned out to be, one Twitter user said that the Pope falling for a thirst trap is a great way wrap up the year.

Some of the Twitter users also took sarcastic digs at the Pope Francis in connection with the rampant cases of pedophilia prevalent among the Christian pastors. “I mean hey at least it’s not kids,” one Twitter user replied.

Pope Francis had said having good sex is a ‘divine pleasure’ “directly from God”

Several users linked the incident to the pope’s announcement earlier this year where he said having good sex and food are “divine” pleasures that come “directly from God.”

According to a newly-published book of interviews, the Pope had reportedly told writer Carlo Petrini that the church has “always accepted human, simple, moral pleasure”.

“Pleasure arrives directly from God, it is neither Catholic, nor Christian, nor anything else, it is simply divine,” Pope had said.

“The Church has always opposed inhuman, brutish, vulgar pleasure, but has always favoured and accepted human, simple and moral pleasure,” he said.

Priyanka and Rahul were having a picnic in Shimla during Bihar elections: Senior RJD leader fumes over Congress leadership

Senior RJD leader Shivanand Tiwari is not pleased with the way Congress Party is functioning, and it is visible in his recent statements after losing the Bihar elections in a close fight. Tiwari has voiced what many political analysts have been speaking about since the Bihar election results, that the Congress is becoming a burden on its allies.

Senior RJD leader Shivanand Tiwari has spoken openly against the Congress and how it contributed to an election debacle in Bihar where the NDA was facing a 15-year anti-incumbency and still emerged victorious. Tiwari has raised questions about the leadership and functioning of Congress. He added that while the elections were at full swing, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra were enjoying picnics on Priyanka’s place in Shimla. “Is a party run like that?”, Tiwari asked.

Tiwari also alleged that Congress leaders have been mistreating loyal party leaders. Slamming the Congress leadership, Tiwari said that despite concerns raised by senior party leaders, Congress leadership has been lackadaisical and irresponsible in their approach.

In an interview to ANI, Tiwari said, “There was a meeting in which senior party leaders were present including Kapil Sibbal and Shashi Tharoor. They were worried about the party functioning and had written a letter. They all remained loyal to the Congress party all their lives. This is not the way to run a party. While elections were going on here, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi were holidaying in Shimla. The way Congress Party is functioning, they are helping Bhartiya Janata Party.”

There is no glory in taking seats from allies if you fail to win them

Tiwari was not happy with the seat distribution in Bihar either. In an interview to Times Now, he said, “They forcefully took 70 seats but could not do even 70 rallies. Rahul Gandhi came to Bihar only for three days. He did two rallies in a single day. The Prime Minister, who is so much older to Rahul in age, did more rallies than him. Priyanka Gandhi did not even come for rallies in Bihar.”

Tiwari criticised the Congress’ greed for seats. He said that it is more important to win seats than to just claim them for contesting from your allies.. “They should learn from their opponents. They are making Nitish Kumar Chief Minister of Bihar, who got 41 seats while BJP won 74 seats. Leaders like Jitan Ram Manjhi and Kushwaha were not accommodated on Mahagathbandhan. The BJP, on the other hand, gave them 12 seats to contest in Bihar elections by taking switft decisions and good planning,” he added.

While talking about the by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, Tiwari lashed out at Congress for living in the past. He said it does not matter if Congress has ruled for 70 years since Independence. It won’t harm their reputation if they contest elections on lesser seats compared to their alliances. “See what happened in Uttar Pradesh. They have lost deposits on four seats in by-elections.” He mentioned how Ghulam Nabi Azad is not pleased with the party’s decisions on Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir. “Close aides of Ghulam Nabi Azad were not given tickets in upcoming Panchayat elections in Jammu and Kashmir.

Tiwari asserted that the Congress leadership is trying to run a dictatorship in a democracy.

Congress has become a burden for allies?

India’s oldest party has become an entity that is no more than a ‘vote-cutter party’ for the regional allies. From Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh to Rashtriya Janata Dal in Bihar have lost elections as Congress failed to win seats from their quota. In recent Bihar Assembly elections, RJD won 75 seats compared to BJP that won 74 seats. However, because RJD was in alliance with Congress, the total number of seats won by Mahagathbandhan stopped at 110. As a result, Nitish Kumar is going to become Chief Minister of Bihar for another 5-year term.

As per the reports, Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi were holidaying in Shimla while Bihar election results were being announced. 23 senior Congress leaders have reportedly written to interim Congress President Sonia Gandhi showing their displeasure over the casual behaviour of the higher officials in the party.

Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal admits people don’t consider Congress an effective alternative

Realisation finally seems to be dawning upon Congress leaders that the grand old party is losing its relevance. Senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal in an interview to Indian Express today admitted that people no longer consider Congress as an effective alternative. On being questioned about party’s performance in recently concluded Bihar elections where it performed so badly that it perhaps stopped the Mahagathbandhan from forming a government in state, Sibal said, “The people of the country, not just in Bihar but wherever by-elections were held, obviously don’t consider the Congress to be an effective alternative. This is one conclusion.”

He added how the alternative to BJP in Bihar was the RJD, which emerged as single largest party and it was completely wiped out in Gujarat by-elections. “In some of the constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, the Congress candidates in the by-elections notched up less than 2% of the votes cast. Three of our candidates in Gujarat lost their deposits,” he said. “I hope the Congress introspects,” he quoted an unnamed colleague from the Congress Working Committee.

Lashing out on the party, Sibal said that Congress has had six years to introspect and also has the answers. “The Congress party itself knows all the answers. But they are not willing to recognise those answers,” he told to the Indian Express.

Sibal, along with other Congress leaders had written to Congress President Sonia Gandhi with number of suggestions to keep the party afloat. They also questioned vacation by Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra in middle of elections. However, he has not heard back from the party leadership.

While Sibal does bemoan the lack of communication and democratic process within Congress to choose leadership, he still shies away from naming the Gandhi family for being an ineffective leadership. “Some of us put our pen to paper and said what should be done in the Congress on the road ahead. Instead of listening to us they turned their back on us. The results are for all to see,” he said.

Uttar Pradesh: Six year old girl kidnapped on Diwali night, murdered for resisting rape

In a gruesome act, a six year old girl who had gone missing on Diwali night was found dead in the forest near her house in Ghatampur area in Kanpur on Sunday morning. As per reports, the police had earlier suspected that she was killed by people for practicing ‘black magic’. However, after two men were arrested in this regard, the police has concluded that she was killed for resisting their attempt to rape her.

As per reports, Kanpur’s Deputy IG Preetinder Singh said that the two men were her neighbours and tried to rape her after kidnapping her. However, when she resisted their attempts, they tied her hands and killed her. As per Singh, sniffer dogs were also used to gather evidence to rule out black magic angle. The body has been sent for post-mortem. Doctors have also been asked to check if the girl was murdered in black magic act.

The minor girl went missing on Saturday, Diwali evening, when the rest of the family was preparing for the puja. The family tried searching for her in the neighbourhood but in vain. They even searched the nearby jungle using torches and flashlight but could not find her.

On Sunday, when some villagers were passing through the village, they discovered her body. As per senior officials, her injury marks suggest she was killed with sharp object. Her belongings like her clothes and slippers were found nearby.

Yogi Adityanath directs strict action against accused

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister has directed officials to take strict action against the accused for the heinous crime. He has also announced assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the family of the victim. UP Government also said that the matter will be heard in fast-track court so that the perpetrators are brought to justice at the earliest.

China: Popular Tibetan influencer’s murder caught live on camera exposes the communist country’s flawed legal system

30-year-old Tibetan influencer Lhamo (Chinese: Lamu) was very popular on social media, with thousands of followers on popular Chinese short-video app Douyin. However, the image she created on social media for her followers was completely different from her personal life. A victim of continuous domestic abuse, Lhamo died on September 30 after fighting for her life in the Intensive Care Unit for two weeks. Her story has intensified the debate over inadequate laws against domestic violence in China.

Lhamo was set on fire by her husband.

Death of Lhamo

As per reports, Lhamo met her ex-husband Tang when they were teenagers. She started dating him when she was 17. They got divorced, remarried, and divorced again due to his violent behaviour. She had called police countless times over domestic abuse, but her complaints mostly went unheard, and she could not get the protection she deserved.

According to Guyu Lab, Lhamo’s sister Dolma revealed that soon after their marriage, Tang started to show his violent side. The domestic violence intensified after Lhamo’s mother died. She was the only one in her family who would have supported her. Every time Lhamo tried to leave Tang, he apologized profusely and promised not to get violent again.

While talking to Guyu Lab, a police officer said Lhamo filed numerous complaints against her husband, but police took it as a private family matter. They did not intervene seriously and only warned Tang a few times not to cross lines. “We could tell that Lhamo was at a disadvantage. She’s a woman, and her dad was sick. We always sided with her, telling Tang not to use violence or cross the line. But besides that, there was very little we could do,” he said.

Lhamo left her husband’s house early this year after she suffered a broken arm. In May 2020, the couple got divorced. However, the threatening calls and messages kept pouring in. Tang had even assaulted Lhamo’s sister and threatened to harm the children. A few weeks later, Lhamo was pressurized to marry him again. However, she had again filed for divorce soon.

On September 14, when Lhamo was live streaming from her Kitchen, Tang broke into her house. He poured gasoline over her and lit her on fire. Her father, who was in another room, rushed to help and immediately sent her to hospital. Lhamo fought for her life for two weeks in the Intensive Care Unit but lost the battle to the severe burn injuries that covered almost 90% of her body. Her husband was arrested under “intentional homicide” charges.

Underreported domestic violence cases in China

The domestic violence cases in China are vastly underreported. Tsering Kyi, Project Officer at the Women Empowerment Desk (WED), said, “We have a Tibetan women helpline that helps women experiencing domestic violence in their homes. There are variations of violence in such cases; Lhamo’s case is an extreme example. Domestic, sexual, and gender-based violence have been reported to our office but it is also difficult for women to speak up against such violence. Some have even backed off after reporting a case as there is a lot of victim-blaming in our society.”

Phayul, a Tibetan news portal, reported comments of Tibetan social activists. Some have asked to set up safe spaces for Tibetan women in India who have suffered domestic violence.

Inadequate laws against domestic violence in China

China passed its first Anti-Domestic Violence Law in 2016. As per a report by SupChina, by the end of 2019, 942 cases have been reported that had resulted in 1,214 deaths. According to experts, the laws in China are not enough to provide adequate and timely protection to the victims from their violent partners. Another significant issue is that domestic violence in China is often seen as a private issue even by the police officers. They believe that such cases should be dealt behind closed doors, and there is no need to intervene.

Death of Lhamo has sparked a debate against domestic violence on Chinese social media platforms. Several experts are asking for strict laws against domestic violence but going by the nation’s history, it is not likely to happen anytime soon.

Diwali retail sales go up by 10.8% over 2019, China loses of Rs 40,000 crore in business as Indians prefer Made in India products

Following a slowdown in the economy due to the lockdown, the festive season of Diwali has brought smiles to the traders as robust business was recorded during this period in the country. Moreover, make in India was a major winner as consumers preferred domestic products instead of imported products from China. According to Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT), it has recorded sales of around Rs 72,000 crore this year on Diwali across major markets in the county. At the same time, China lost approximately Rs 40,000 in business.

The call to boycott Chinese goods following the Chinese aggression in LAC has benefited that domestic industry, which achieved good sales during Diwali.

“As per reports gathered from 20 different cities which are also considered to be the leading distribution centers of India, it is expected that Diwali festive sales generated a turnover of about Rs 72,000 crores and gave China the expected loss of Rs 40,000 crore,” a statement issued  by CAIT said.

This meant the sale during Diwali went up 10.8% in 2020 compared to the previous year. to Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) represents tens of millions of traders and firms across the country, and its members include retailers that sale various products.

Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Nagpur, Raipur, Bhubaneswar, Ranchi, Bhopal, Lucknow, Kanpur, Noida, Jammu, Ahmadabad, Surat, Cochin, Jaipur and Chandigarh are the cities considered by the CAIT as major distribution cities for the purpose of its surveys on sales.

According to the trader’s body, robust sales during Diwali is an indicator that businesses will improve in the future, following the Coronavirus lockdown. Products that saw good sales included FMCG products, toys, electrical appliances and white goods, kitchen utensils and accessories, gift items, confectionary items, sweets, home furnishing and decoration, gold and jewellery, footwear, watches, furniture and fixtures, garments etc.

According to CAIT, one reason for good Diwali sales is that people didn’t make major purchase in the last eight months, and that’s why they had enough surplus money for festival purchases.

However, firecracker sellers suffered a loss of around Rs 10,000 crore due to the ban on the sale of firecrackers in several states in the name of controlling pollution. The CAIT has demanded compensation from the Delhi govt for the traders, as the ban on firecracker was imposed after the state govt had issued licenses to traders to sell green firecrackers, and accordingly, the traders had purchased the allowed firecrackers, but were not allowed to sale the same afterwards.
