India congratulates Afghanistan president Ashraf Ghani after his election victory, Ghani thanks for support

India extended its wishes to President Dr Ashraf Ghani on his re-election following the announcement of final results of the Presidential elections by the Independent Election Commission of Afghanistan.


The MEA in its press release said: “India supports the democratic aspirations of the people of Afghanistan and remains committed to continue to work with the new Government and the democratic polity in strengthening our bilateral strategic partnership in fighting the scourge of externally sponsored terrorism and for an enduring and inclusive national peace and reconciliation which is Afghan led, Afghan owned and Afghan controlled.”

“We hope that the new Government and all political leaders in Afghanistan would work to strengthen national unity, promote inclusivity and protect the rights and interests of all sections of society,” the statement added.

Afghanistan President Dr Ashraf Ghani took to Twitter to respond to India’s congratulatory message. “As a friend, neighbour and the world’s largest democracy, thank you India for fully supporting Afghanistan’s democratic process!”


Bilateral relations between Afghanistan and India, who have been historical neighbours, have traditionally been strong and friendly. India has been one of Afghanistan’s biggest allies in the war against the Taliban, training thousands of security personnel. New Delhi has also played a significant role in the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Afghanistan.

In 2018, Afghanistan Ambassador to India, Sahida Mohammad Abdali had said that the bilateral trade between India and Afghanistan is expected to reach USD 2 billion by 2020.

Last year, Afghanistan began exports to India through an Iranian port. The Iranian port provides easy access to the sea to Afghanistan and India and has helped both countries to engage in trade bypassing Pakistan.

AgustaWestland Scam: CBI seeks sanction to prosecute top defence ministry officials for their direct involvement

At least six public officials, including top defence ministry officials, are likely to be prosecuted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for their alleged involvement in the Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam.

According to the reports, the CBI has sought sanction to prosecute public officials who had “direct” involvement and allegedly tweaked the process to favour AgustaWestland in the Rs 3,600 crore deal. The officials were involved in the procurement of helicopters during the UPA regime.

Reportedly, their role has come to light now and the present charge sheet will reveal findings that emerged after the extradition and arrest of middleman Christian Michel from Dubai in December 2018, the sources added.

The CBI is ready with all the supporting evidence to substantiate its demand to prosecute the said public officials. However, the move may delay the agency’s supplementary charge sheet in the case, which is likely to throw light on the involvement of more individuals—public servants, air force officials and private individuals.

In the 2017 charge sheet, CBI said the scam had caused the government a loss of 398.21 million euros. It named four Indians and five foreign nationals in its 30,000-page document.

The agency, in its 2018 charge sheet, had also named European middlemen Carlo Gerosa, Michel James, Guido Haschke, former AgustaWestland CEO Bruno Spagnolini and former Finmeccanica chairman Giuseppe Orsi.

The CBI in its charge sheet had submitted that it was able to establish money trail of €62 million from countries such as Mauritius, Singapore, the UAE, Tunisia, the UK and British Virgin Island.

India had signed a deal in 2010 under the UPA regime to buy 12 AgustaWestland AW101 helicopters for the service of the Prime Minister, the President and other VVIPs. It is alleged that some politicians and public servants had abused their official positions to reduce the service ceiling of the VVIPs helicopter from 6000 metres to 4500 metres to make AgustaWestland eligible for the contract and had awarded the contract for an amount of Euro 556.262 million in 2010. The deal was cancelled in 2013 after the scam was revealed.

The AgustaWestland VVIP chopper scam has been nothing less of a blistering drama ever since middleman Christian Michel was extradited to India from Dubai. Several revelations came to light, from the names of “Italian Lady”, to “Italian Lady’s son R“. From how Christian Michel was lobbying for the Eurofighter and against the Rafale deal, to how he had unbridled access to the PMO under Congress regime, the CCS and even the investigative agencies.

Standing by the claims of Former Top Cop Rakesh Maria who made stunning revelations about a plot to blame Hindus for the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Ujjwal Nikam, the special public prosecutor in the 26/11 case backed Maria saying the terrorist were indeed given fake IDs to pose as a Hindu. Ujjwal Nikam said that IDs carried by the terrorists had fake Hindu names.

Speaking to ANI, Ujjwal Nikam on Wednesday said, “It’s true that the IDs carried Hindu names. Kasab had given a statement in Mumbai court which proved that the 10 accused had 10 fake IDs. We had presented IDs in the court. We proved it.”


Nikam stated that Kasab had testified that Kafa, who provided military training to the terrorists had made those fake IDs available to them. The purpose of the fake IDs was to mislead the police, stated Nikam.

Earlier this week former Mumbai Commissioner Rakesh Maria’s revelations in his book “Let me say it now” that claimed that Ajmal Kasab had an ID with a Hindu name Samir Chaudhary on it had made media headlines.

Maria, in his book, asserted that Kasab had Hindu ID on him and the Pakistani intelligence agency ISI and the terror organisation Lashkar-e-Toiba wanted him to die as “Samir Chaudhary”. According to Maria, Lashkar and ISI planned to make all the ten terrorists who attacked Mumbai on 26/11 seem like disgruntled Hindus avenging the ‘atrocities’ perpetrated against Muslims. All ten terrorists were provided with saffron or red thread to be tied around their wrist so as to lend them a veneer of pious Hindus.

“There would have been screaming headlines in newspapers claiming how Hindu terrorists had attacked Mumbai. Over the top TV journalists would have made a beeline for Bengaluru to interview his family and neighbours. But alas, it had not worked that way and there he was, Ajmal Amir Kasab of Faridkot in Pakistan,” Maria has written in his book.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal, attacking Chidambaram and Congress party over the issue, had stated that the Congress party tried to hatch a deeper conspiracy, full of deceit and lies, to raise the bogey of Hindu terror on the direction of former Union Minister P Chidambaram.

Today news agency ANI reported that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has said that use of the word ‘nationalism’ should be avoided, as it can be seen from derived from Hitler and Nazism. The ANI report was carried by several mainstream media houses.

Quoting Mohan Bhagawat during a speech in Ranchi on February 20, the report said that Mohan Bhagwat had said, “don’t use the word nationalism. Use of the words Nation or nationality is okay but don’t use nationalism because it means Hitler, Nazism.”

But this is complete misquoting, as the RSS chief didn’t ask people to stop using the word ‘nationalism’. If we hear his speech, it becomes clear that what some people in several parts of the world think about the word, and he was quoting only such people. He said, ‘intellectuals in a large geographical area think that nationalism is a dangerous thing for the world. The nationalism world is not considered as a good word in the world. Several years ago, when I had gone to the UK, I was having a discussion with some people about the Sangh. There one RSS worker told me to be careful about the meaning of words as English is not my first language’.

Mohan Bhagwat added that the worker said to him, ‘meanings of words change here during conversations. That’s why you should not use the word nationalism. You can say nation, national or nationality, but do not say nationalism. Because nationalism means Hitler, Nazism, Fascism.’

‘That’s how this word has got a bad name there, but we know that whenever India grew as a nation, the world had benefited,’ Mohan Bhagwat added.

Therefore, he was not asking people to avoid using the word nationalism, he was only telling how some intellectuals see the word outside India, and how he was asked to avoid the word in the UK as he could be misunderstood. He, in fact, rued the fact that the word ‘nationalism’ has got a bad name in the world, and talked in its support.

Moan Bhagawat also said that the world is facing the problem of fundamentalism. The problem of radicalism, the problem of environment, the problem of the thought that ‘mine is correct everything else is wrong’, these are some of the major issues due to which there is unrest in the world, he added.

The RSS chief said that to bring unity, uniformity is required. To maintain the country as one, something common is needed. Some countries are based on a language, some countries are based on religion – you need to belong to a particular religion to be the citizen of those countries, some countries are based on economic viewpoint, but there is nothing such in our country. But India is based on diversity, our constitution accepts diversity. Although the saying is ‘unity in diversity’, actually we say ‘diversities of unity’.

He said this is the Indian culture, which is also the Hindu culture. Despite having so much diversities, we are connected to each other by the thread of the word Hindu.

The Supreme Court has dismissed a petition that demanded that Hindus be declared a minority in states where they are numerically in the minority. If Hindus were to be designated as a minority in the seven states and one Union Territory, then they would have been eligible for minority rights as specified in the Constitution. The petition was filed by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay.


The apex court has directed the petitioner to approach the individual High Courts of the states where Hindus are in the minority. Hindus are a minority in Lakshadweep, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur and Punjab.


Upadhyay had contended that those who are not entitled to minority protection under Articles 29 and 30 of the Constitution, exemptions under Articles 15(5) and (6) of the Constitution, provisions of the Right to Education Act and welfare programmes of the Government, etc, are enjoying these measures. This is a clear violation of Articles 14 and 21 of the Constitution of India.

Upadhyay had said that Hindus, who are a majority community as per national data, are in minority in several north-eastern states and in Jammu and Kashmir. He further added that the Hindu community is deprived of benefits that are available to the minority communities in these states.

Under the guise of upholding the Dravidian movement, DMK Rajya Sabha MP and party’s organizing secretary, RS Bharathi stirred fresh controversy after airing demeaning and derogatory statements against journalists, people of North India and the Dalits.

Being one of the party’s senior leaders, he has been caught up with strong criticism among the media after his address went viral on Monday. Addressing in an event of Kalaignar Readers’ circle that was organized at Anbagam, the DMK Youth Wing headquarters in Chennai on Saturday, Bharathi started off by attacking senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader H Raja, calling him a loafer and then a “Brahmin dog”.

According to a report by Swarajya, the DMK leader said: “Had I not held a position in the party, I would have become a terrorist to take on these people (those criticising the Dravidian movement),” Bharathi said, furthering that the present-day youth are not aware that Tamil Nadu was among the top states due the contribution of the Dravidian movement.

“People in other states are fools. Particularly, North India they are all fools,” said the DMK MP.

The senior DMK leader went to the extent of comparing the media channels with ‘Red Light Area’ in Mumbai. The party leader said: “They have a debate on this. These television guys are scoundrels. No one is as corrupt as them. They are running the channels like the red light area in Mumbai. Just because they are getting money, they raise anything (issue).”

“The press guys don’t have any job. They don’t write anything when others do something. When (Arvind) Kerjiwal hired Prashant Kishor, they didn’t write about it. Narendra Modi used it, they didn’t write. Many others used him, no one wrote. But when he (Kishor) came to DMK in Tamil Nadu, they are talking out of jealousy,” the senior DMK leader said.

In his speech that lasted for about 12 minutes, he stated that the appointment of Dalits as High court judges was possible because of the dole given by the Dravidian movement. “Not a single Harijan has become a judge in Madhya Pradesh till this day. It was Kalaignar (the late Karunanidhi) who first made an Adi Dravida (a Scheduled Caste in Tamil Nadu), Varadharajan, a judge after he came to power”.

“After that, if seven or eight from the community have become judges, it is because of the alms (pitchai) doled out by the DMK,”  said the DMK MP.

He then went on to make more disparaging remarks on the Supreme Court. “Ava (Brahmins) have come back. I say with heartburn that the Supreme Court has become an RSS camp. I am an advocate, but this is my grievance,” the DMK MP.

He went on to claim that the party is neither against Hinduism nor Hindus and he stated that the priests at the temples won’t be getting money if the members of DMK don’t go to temples.

Stating that a revolution would have taken place had Karunanidhi been alive, Bharathi said: “Periyar (EV Ramasamy), Anna (CN Annadurai) and Kalaignar are needed again today.”

The senior DMK leader, however, after receiving severe backlash on social media and by various journalists for his derogatory statements against the media, took to Twitter and regretted his statements against the Dalits and marginalized communities. In his tweet, he stated that he understood that his speech has hurt the sentiments of the backward communities and claimed that his motive was to highlight the good things Karunanidhi has done for them.

Addressing the reporters, he stated that he had no personal intention to hurt the media and placed his regret by pointing that the party’s president had asked him to meet the reporters and to place the regret about his comments.

The US President Donald Trump is scheduled to be received by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday in Ahmedabad, in his home state Gujarat, and will travel to Delhi for further talks on Tuesday. The India tour of President Donald Trump is expected to be a historic landmark as beyond trade talks, the optics of Trump visiting India alone is said to boost ties between the nations.

However, as the political discourse goes in India, the scheduled between the heads of the state of the largest and the oldest democracies has not gone down well with the opposition parties who have made opposing Prime Minister Modi with crass comments, lies and propaganda the norm.

Ahead of the Trump visit to Ahmedabad, a fake, morphed image from Ahmedabad was shared in a bid to undermine the historic meet.

Twitter user Aishwary Verma shared an image that shows a wall, painted with the image of President Donald Trump and Narendra Modi, being defaced by a urinating man. With the image, Aishwary asked other users to ‘caption the image’.

Following this tweet, another tweet was published by Aishwary in which he used the image to mock Prime Minister Modi and his supporters further.

Aishwary wrote that an “innocent Bhakt” (A word used a pejorative by Leftists for supporters of PM Modi) is trying to strengthen the wall by urinating on it.

Aishwary Verma, who shared this image with pejorative connotations is actually an Aam Admi Party Social Media in charge and campaign coordinator.

The image which has been used by Verma to mock the meeting between PM Modi and President Donald Trump and also to hurl insults at the supporters of the Prime Minister is actually a hastily photoshopped image designed specifically to undermine the historic meet.

The original image is an Associated Press image that has been used in the AP article dated 18th February, headlined, “India hastily builds wall along slum ahead of Trump visit”. While this news is actually untrue and has been contested by officials, the image used by the AP article is the one which has been morphed by the AAP functionary.

The AP image was clicked by photographer Ajit Solanki according to the credits mentioned in the AP article.

One can see that the image used by the AAP functionary and the one used by AP is the same since the man riding the bike appears in both images.

Further, if one notices carefully, there are other markers of the image being morphed.

Looking at the image, it is evident that on the wall, there is a shadow image of a nearby bush, however, there is no shadow image of the man urinating.

It is thus evident that the Associated Press image was taken by the Aam Admi Party functionary and morphed to superimpose the urinating man just to undermine and mock the meeting between Trump and PM Modi.

As a result of this fake image being propagated by AAP functionary, several crass comments started pouring in, a sample of which follows.


This is not the first time that AAP functionaries have resorted to blatant lying. Three Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers from Haryana were arrested on 29 December 2018 for circulating fake news about CM Manohar Lal Khattar. The complaint was registered by Bharatiya Janta Party, under IPC sections of 153 (provocation with intent to cause riots), 153A (promoting enmity on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, etc.) and IT Act section 66 (cyber crimes). During the Haryana Mayoral elections, an image had gone viral on social media which claimed that Khattar had said he is chief minister only for the Punjabis and he has nothing to do with other communities but he image was fake.

Right after the Pulwama attack too, an image was circulated by a Pro-AAP page on social media which quoted false data to paint the NDA government in poor light.

In fact, in April 2019, Aam Aadmi Party worker in Vadodara, Ghanshyam Parmar, who had put up morphed pictures with a fake message claiming Prime Minister Modi’s sudden death was arrested by Vadodara Police.

BJP MP and former Union minister Subramanian Swamy has claimed that senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi are to lose their Indian citizenship soon.

While delivering a lecture on “CAA – a historical imperative beyond contemporary politics” at an event organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad at the University of Hyderabad Thursday, the BJP MP said: “The file is on the Home Minister Amit Shah’s table and soon they will lose their citizenship.”

Referring to the rules of the Indian constitution, Swamy said that people taking the citizenship of another country while being an Indian citizen will automatically lose their Indian citizenship.

Swamy added that Rahul Gandhi can apply for Indian citizenship as his father (Rajiv Gandhi) was an Indian. But, the Congress leader cannot apply using his mother, Sonia Gandhi’s credentials who he claimed was not an Indian national.

Speaking at the event in Hyderabad, the BJP senior leader claimed that Rahul Gandhi had taken British citizenship to start a business in England.

In fact, on April 30 last year, MHA had reportedly issued a notice to Congress President Rahul Gandhi over the citizenship controversy which surfaced back in 2015. The Home Ministry had, in the notice issued then, cited documents of the British company BackOps where Rahul Gandhi filed returns as a British citizen.

This notice by the MHA was issued after a complaint was filed with the ministry by BJP MP Subramanian Swamy.

The citizenship row began in 2015 when Swamy cited documents pertaining to a company Backops Limited where Rahul Gandhi was the Director. In the said documents, the Congress President’s nationality was mentioned as British. Since then, the matter has been a cause of great dispute.

In November 2015, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition filed by lawyer M.L. Sharma demanding a CBI enquiry into the matter. The highest court of the country deemed the petition ‘frivolous’. The following year in January, another BJP MP Maheish Girri filed a complaint with the Lok Sabha speaker, Sumitra Mahajan, regarding Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship. As per the rules, she forwarded it to the Ethics Committee.

Two months later, in March, the Ethics Committee headed by veteran BJP leader L.K. Advani issued a notice to Rahul Gandhi over the matter but nothing much came of it. It was later reported that not a single meeting was held in this regard. Since then, the matter was in a political potboiler until last year when an independent candidate from Amethi filed a complaint with the Election Commission over the matter. The EC, however, found no reason to disqualify the Congress President.

On April 30, 2019, it was reported that a notice has been sent to Rahul Gandhi by the MHA following a complaint by Subramaniam Swamy.

It may be noted that as per Section 3(a) of the Citizenship Act, any person born in India between 26 January 1950 and 1 July 1987 are Indian citizens, regardless of the citizenship of the parents. For persons born after 1 July 1987, anyone of the parents needs to be Indian citizen, and after 2003, both the parents must be Indian citizens. Rahul Gandhi was born in New Delhi in June 1970.

In a video that has gone viral, two men are seen bring brutally abused, and tortured by a group of men. As per reports, the incident occurred in Rajasthan where two Dalit men were beaten by a group of people.

As per reports, the incident occurred in Nagaur district’s Panchaudi police station area, in the Karnu village. The incident allegedly occurred on Sunday. One of the victims, a youth from Sonnagar Bhojavas has stated to the police that he had come to a bike service station in Karnu village along with his cousin on 16 February.

As per the victim’s statement, while at the bike agency, a group of men namely Bheev Singh, Hadman Singh, Lachhman Singh and others had accused them of stealing money and had started beating them. The man has stated that he and his cousin were taken to a shed behind the agency and were beaten mercilessly. The assaulters had even dipped a screwdriver in petrol and had inserted it inside his rectum, causing grievous injuries.

After beating up the men for over 1.5 hours, the assaulters had called up the relatives of the victims and had asked them to come and take the two men.

After the video of the brutal torture went viral on social media, the police had taken action and had lodges FIR against the accused, namely Bheev Singh, Lachhman Singh, Hadman Singh, Sawai Singh, Ganpatram, and many others. Nagaur SP Vikas Pathak has informed that the police have lodged cases and have so far arrested Hadman, Raghuveer, Chhail, Rahamatullah, and Lachhman. They are currently searching for other accused.

Nagaur MP Hanuman Beniwal has condemned the incident and has stated that it is shameful. He has reportedly spoken to the police officials and has asked for quick and strict action.

The Delhi Police Special Cell on Wednesday wrote to the Delhi government requesting him to “expedite” the process of grant of sanction to prosecute former JNU Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, radical Islamist Umar Khalid and others in a sedition case.

According to the reports, the Delhi Police has asked the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government to clear their pending request for prosecuting controversial ultra-left wing leader Kanhaiya Kumar and others in connection with JNU sedition case.

Pramod Singh Kushwaha, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Special Cell, in a letter said, “It is requested to expedite the process to accord prosecution sanction under Section 196 CrPC as required for the offence under Chapter VI of the IPC i.e. Section 124A IPC.”

The request by the Delhi police comes after AAP government in Delhi led by Arvind Kejriwal, who brands himself ‘Kattar Deshbhakt’ has been reluctant to give green signal for prosecuting the ‘tukde tukde gang’ members in the JNU sedition case.

Aam Aadmi Party-led Delhi government has repeatedly rejected Delhi Police’s request for sanction to prosecute former Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU) President Kanhaiya Kumar and others who have been accused of raising anti-India slogans on JNU campus on February 9, 2016.

In January 2019, the Delhi Police Special Cell had submitted a 1200-page charge-sheet in the case. The JNU sedition case has seen no proceeding so far due to the Arvind Kejriwal government’s refusal to give nod for prosecution.

Shockingly, the Arvind Kejriwal government is of the view that the accused had ‘no intention’ of inciting violence and did not raise such slogans during the march. The Delhi government has found the evidence provided by Delhi Police ‘flimsy’ and ‘riddled with gaps’.

Earlier in the day, a Delhi court had asked the Delhi government to file a status report relating to the issue of pendency of sanction in the JNU sedition case to prosecute Kanhaiya Kumar and others.
