Kashmiri separatists call for shutdown on Burhan Wani’s death anniversary

Kashmiri separatists have called for a shutdown on Monday, to mark the third death anniversary of the slain terrorist Burhan Wani.

In a statement, the separatist group Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) have appealed to the people of Tral and adjoining areas to pay homage to Burhan Wani and other terrorists like him on July 8. JRL is a conglomerate of separatists headed by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq and Yasin Malik.

Reportedly, intelligence agencies have said that terrorists are planning to carry out an attack in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on July 8. Sources say that a new group of six to eight Pakistan terrorists have reached Pulwama.

Their main target is the highway stretch leading from the toll plaza at Chechikot in Awantipora to the four-way bridge at Galander in Pulwama. Burhan Wani’s hometown Tral is in the Pulwama district and hence is of great significance for the terrorists.

For several years Burhan Wani had managed to stay away from the grasp of the security forces. He was finally killed in a gunfight in Kokernag, Anantnag, on 8 July 2016.

As reported in 2016, several people had attempted to whitewash Wani’s image. Journalist Burkha Dutt termed him as a “son of school headmaster”. Former J&K CM Omar Abdullah was more worried about the aftermath of Wani’s death, instead of congratulating the army. Activist Kavita Krishnan, on the other hand, condemned the supposed “extrajudicial killing” of Wani.

In May, it was reported that Pakistan also wishes to glorify Burhan Wani. A Pakistan legislator, who is a member of Imran Khan’s PTI, would be playing the role of Burhan Wani in a movie. Last month National Conference (NC) leader Ali Mohammad Sagar eulogized anti-India terrorists alleging that BJP made inroads in Kashmir in areas where Burhan Wani and Zakir Musa were shot down in an encounter by the Indian Armed Forces.

Hilarious! Pakistan minister confuses animated GTA V plane landing video with real one

Parody nation Pakistan never fail to entertain the Twitterati with their regular dose of gaffes. In the latest, a Pakistani Minister, Khurram Nawaz Gandapur on Saturday left the Twitterati in splits as he shared a video of a popular game Grand Theft Auto (GTA) V as if it were a real incident.

He shared a stimulation video on his Twitter handle, which he later deleted, in which a flight dramatically avoids collision with a fuel tanker while landing. He praised the presence of mind of the pilot for averting a major tragedy on a runway while landing.

SS of Khurram Nawaz Gandapur’s Tweet which he later deleted

Within minutes, the Pakistani minister post went viral on the microblogging site. Many Twitter users also responded by trying to guess the name of the game in the video clip while others trolled the minister for his ignorance.

Meanwhile, one Twitter user decided to give him the benefit of doubt by calling it a ‘generation gap’.

However, this is not the first time Pakistanis have made such self goals. Recently, in another gaffe that left the people on social media in splits, a Pakistani TV anchor confused Apple Inc with apple the fruit. She did not realize her mistake until the panelist himself corrected her and said he was actually referring to the company Apple Inc and not the fruit.

Recently, Pakistan made itself an object of ridicule, when, during the live streaming of the press conference of the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the cat filter got accidentally turned on, making the faces of the people look like cats.

The budget gets almost everything right, but sends a few wrong signals

The budget presented on Friday gets almost everything right and was perhaps extremely bold on its vision for a “New India”. The same was reflected in the #BudgetForNewIndia that was used by none other than the Prime Minister and this sends a very strong & positive signal to private capital.

It is no secret that something went wrong in FY2018 from the second quarter and that’s why our growth slowed from 8.0 to 5.8 per cent within 3 quarters. This fall is likely to have spooked many, but the slowdown was a consequence of our monetary ignorance. With a series of rate cuts since then, we can see a reversal in the policy stance, and that is a welcome sign.

Beyond the monetary woes, expectations were on the budget to ensure that growth revives, and India’s finance minister has set the ball rolling for what looks like a departure from our conventional policy stance. It is important to note that the importance of budget has come down over the years, more so since the introduction of GST. Therefore, we no longer have anchors telling us what’s expensive or cheaper after the announcement of our budget- or well, we sometimes do when there are changes in import tariffs.

In my wishlist for the budget, I had indicated lowering of corporate tax rates- and of cost of capital to revive investments. The economic survey highlighted these issues as it stressed on the revival of investments. It is worth mentioning that the High-Level Advisory Group (HLAG) on trade headed by Dr Surjit Bhalla raised these points a couple of months ago. Therefore, there is a realization within the government that it has to revive private investments and doing so would require to take concentrated policy action.

With India having one of the highest corporate tax rates in the world, followed by a dividend distribution tax and surcharges, firms are left with little retained earnings to invest. Add to this the high cost of capital in India and firms become further dissuaded from taking risks on their balance sheets. It would be fair to see that the risk-reward was mismatched. We’ve seen some correction come in with the reduction in corporate taxes to 25% for 99.3 per cent of the firms. But then, why ignore the other 0.7 per cent? Especially at a time when we want to sustain investments. Bigger firms have bigger capacity and aptitude to invest and therefore they should not be subjected to one of the highest corporate taxes in the world. To benefit the small firms, you could have given an additional 2 per cent reduction from 25 per cent level while for the rest you could have kept the rates at 25 per cent itself.

Nevertheless, the fact that we witnessed a corporate tax cut for a majority of firms is itself a big development and it sends a sign that the government is embracing businesses. When one views the statement on integrating India into the global value chain, and relaxation of the local sourcing norms for single-brand retail, it convinces one more that we’re on the correct path.

But the relaxation of local sourcing norms should happen for other sectors too, especially the ones that are looking to shift their supply chain from China. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity in front of us to seize the moment and transform our economy. Doing so will require multiple policy steps over the coming months and I am optimistic that the government is likely to take them.

As far as the hike in excise duty and cess on petrol and diesel is concerned, it’s a good fiscal strategy but it’s one that is only likely to work when the international crude oil prices are low. For long term prudence, it’s important to realize that our expense is majorly on interest payments due to the high cost of domestic borrowings. The government has rightly identified this and decided to look at sovereign debt in US denominated bonds to raise money from international markets. This is likely to have a big impact in strengthening our fiscal position over the coming years.

However, it makes little sense to increase the surcharge on the rich. The surcharge has the potential to reduce compliance through legitimate measures and as is the case, expected revenue mobilization from the tax is only 2.8-3 thousand crores. It is likely that the surcharge may not mobilize this amount and therefore, it makes little economic sense to introduce it. Politically, it may send the message that the government is taxing the rich but at a time when we want to embrace businesses and businessmen, one can avoid sending such signals.

By all means, as a middle-class citizen, I didn’t get a tax break, not in today’s budget nor in the previous one. Despite that, I argued that if there’s limited tax space then the government should cut corporate taxes rather than income taxes. My logic for this argument was based purely out of what the economy required at the moment because a strong economy is likely to benefit me more rather than a modest tax cut. This is true for all those who’re drawing regular salaries and wonder what was there for them in this budget. The answer to that is a strong economy that is likely to help them move up the social ladder towards higher income groups.

Madhya Pradesh DGP VK Singh’s statement on fake kidnapping cases misinterpreted by mainstream media

On being questioned on the rising incidents of kidnapping and rape cases in Madhya Pradesh, the DGP of the state VK Singh  gave a statement in which he said:

“Ek naya trend IPC 363 ke roop mein dikha hai. Ladkiyaan swatantra zada ho rahi hain, aaj ke samaj mein ladkiyon ki badhti swatantrata ek tathya hai. Aise cases mein increase hua hai jismein wo ghar se chali jati hain aur report hoti hai kidnapping ki”.

By saying what he did, probably, the DGP wanted to convey, that girls nowadays are getting the best of education and exposure. They are being given more freedom by their respective families, which in turn also gives them the opportunity to interact and mingle with boys. He means that few girls who use this freedom often run away from home with boys of their choice against parents’ wish. And many a time, the parents of such girls file ‘fake’ kidnapping cases against the boy and his family.

This statement is not totally untrue. There are many cases where the girls willfully run away with their boyfriends but their families blame the boy and his family and file false kidnapping cases against them. This mostly happens with inter-caste and inter-religion marriages, or when there are huge differences in financial and social status of both the families, as many parents don’t accept such relationships.

This remark from the DGP, which has been doing rounds on social media has, however,  been misinterpreted by many news agencies.

A media house named News Track claimed that according to the DGP, crime is growing due to the freedom given to girls.

SS of the headline used by News Track in its report published on July 7, 2019

Times Now, on the other hand, calling the DGP’s statement an unreasonable analogy said that VK Singh claimed that ‘girls’ interaction with boys lead to rising in false cases of kidnapping’.

India Today called this statement ‘bizarre’ and ‘sexist’ claiming that the “Madhya Pradesh DGP said that girls get kidnapped as they talk to boys, go to schools.”

This is, however, not even close to what the DGP meant, as he was talking about fake kidnapping cases, not real ones.

Mehbooba Mufti advises the Central government to utilise the opportunity to hold talks with the Hurriyat

The Chief of PDP and former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Mehbooba Mufti has urged the Central government to hold talks with the Hurriyat.

Mufti said that a moderate faction of the Hurriyat is ready to hold talks and that the Central government must utilise this ‘opportunity’ to have a dialogue with the Hurriyat.

Earlier she had come out in support of the separatist leaders after the massive crackdown by the security forces on Jamaat-e-Islami. The security forces had conducted raids and arrested dozens of Jamaat-e-Islami leaders. She had questioned the action of the security forces and remarked: “You can imprison a person but not his ideas”.

Mehbooba Mufti had also opposed the scrapping of Articles 35A and 370 of the Constitution. She had threatened that the whole country would burn along with J&K after the BJP had expressed its commitment of abolishing Articles 35A and 370 in its manifesto ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. A complaint was filed against Mufti in February this year for her remarks over scrapping of Article 35 A where she said that the people of J&K would pick up a different flag instead of the tricolour if the Article was removed.

Constable Tariq Ahmed arrested for filming female devotees taking bath at a camp during Amarnath Yatra

A police constable was arrested on Friday for allegedly filming the female devotees taking bath at a camp during the ongoing Amarnath Yatra. The constable named Tariq Ahmed was serving in the 19th battalion of the Indian Reserve Police.

A case has been registered against the accused constable under section 354 (intent to outrage the modesty of women) of the Ranbir Penal Code at Trikuta Nagar police station. However, he was released on bail later. As per the information provided by the police, Constable Ahmed had used his mobile phone to record the video of the women taking bath inside the bathroom of a railway station camp on the night of Wednesday.

He was caught after the women raised alarm and later handed him over to the police. The police formally arrested him the day before yesterday and also seized his mobile.

The Amarnath Yatra that was flagged off on July 1 is laced with tight security arrangements. Security was prepped up at the yatra after the inputs of a possible terror attack by the terrorist organisation Jaish-e-Mohammad. 40,000 security personnel have been deployed by the Centre to guard the pilgrims.

Indian Army busts hideout of the insurgent group NSCN(IM) in Manipur, huge cache of arms and ammunition recovered

The Army has dismantled a hideout belonging to the insurgent group National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) [NSCN(IM)], at Kekru Naga Village in Manipur on Friday. Its cadres were also apprehended after they were found extorting from people at a village.

Indian Army’s Eastern Command said in a tweet, “In a major blow to the insurgent groups, Indian Army troops busted an NSCN(IM) hideout at Kekru Naga Village in Manipur on July 5 resulting in the recovery of large quantities arms and ammunition”.

“A member of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) was detained after he was found trying to hide among people in plainclothes”, the Army said.

The security forces launched a well-coordinated operation on Friday, after receiving a specific input regarding the Naga rebels, NSCN(IM) cadres camping in village Kekru Naga and carrying out illegal extortion in general area Nungba.

However, seeing the force advancing toward their camp, the cadres fled leaving a huge amount of arms, ammunition, tents, uniform and other warlike stores. The weapons found by the raiding team included an American-origin M16 assault rifle with 125 rounds, one self-loading rifle with 26 rounds and some AK series assault rifles, apart from other “warlike stores”.

According to a Defence Ministry, the Security forces are working closely in sync with police, intelligence agencies, civil administration and the local people to identify such unauthorised hideouts.

“Immediate action is being taken to identify and dismantle such undesignated NSCN(IM) camps in Manipur and to stop atrocities as well as illegal activities of these cadres,” defence ministry added.

The Naga quest for independence is one of the longest-running struggles in the Indian subcontinent.

The NSCN (IM), formed in 1980, is led by 85-year-old Thuingaleng Muivah. The other top leader of the group, Isak Chishi Swu, died three years ago at the age of 87 due to multi-organ failure. Over the years, the NSCN-IM has been accused of killings, extortion and other subversive activities. The insurgent group’s persistent demand for independence from India led to a military clampdown on the group.

In August 2015, the NSCN-IM signed a ‘framework agreement’ with the government which Prime Minister Narendra Modi described as a “historic” step to usher in peace in the state.

The signing of the pact was the culmination of over 80 rounds of negotiations that spanned 16 years with the first breakthrough in 1997 when the ceasefire agreement was sealed.

Rohit Sharma – The Bradman of White Ball Cricket

Sir Don Bradman was known for scoring ‘daddy’ hundreds. His hunger never stopped after scoring a century, and that’s whey he went on to score 12 double hundreds in Test which includes two triple centuries and one score of 299. The Indian opener Rohit Sharma is no different from Bradman, just the format is different, and he is not only scoring big but regularly just like Sir Don used to.

Virat Kohli may have more runs, and hundreds than Rohit Sharma in ODIs and most of Virat fans will disagree with Bradman comparison, but Rohit Sharma has been phenomenal in white ball cricket over the past eight years.

Ever since Rohit opened the innings for India in ODIs and smashed his first double hundred in 2013 against Australia, he never looked back in white ball cricket. Rohit has broken many ODI records and is on the verge of breaking many more in the current world cup.

Rohit has an unmatched flair in his batting; he is a magician with the bat. In the last few years, he has been as good as Virat in white ball cricket and not only he keeps scoring runs, he has a habit of scoring them big. With the sweet timing from his bat, balls generally land outside the boundary rope in limited overs cricket.

Rohit was dropped from the Indian squad of World Cup in 2011 and Kohli got the chance to play his first World Cup that year. In 2019, Rohit has smashed many batting records of a Cricket World Cup and is on the verge of breaking the remaining ones.

On Saturday, Rohit brought up his 5th hundred of World Cup 2019. No other batsman in the history of ODI cricket has scored five centuries in one single tournament. He is only 27 runs short of breaking Tendulkar’s record (673) of most runs in a World Cup edition. He is also just one century away from breaking the record of most number of hundreds in World Cups. Tendulkar took 44 innings to score 6 World Cup hundreds, Rohit has taken only 16.

Most Runs in World Cup 2019

Player Inns NO Runs HS Ave SR 100 50 4s 6s
Rohit 8 1 647 140 92.42 98.77 5 1 67 14
Warner 9 1 638 166 79.75 89.48 3 3 64 8
Shakib 8 1 606 124* 86.57 96.03 2 5 60 2
Finch  9 0 507 153 56.33 102.21 2 3 47 18
Root  9 1 500 107 62.5 91.74 2 3 40 2
Williamson 7 2 481 148 96.2 77.2 2 1 42 3
Babar Azam  8 1 474 101* 67.71 87.77 1 3 50 2

Kohli 8 1 442 82 63.14 95.05 0 5 38 2
du Plessis  8 2 387 100 64.5 89.58 1 3 36 4

Rohit has smashed 232 sixes in just 208 ODI innings, he and Gayle are the only batsmen in ODI cricket to have more sixes than innings.

Rohit is also the only player to have an average of more than 50 every single year since 2013. He is also the only visiting batsman to score 12 ODI hundreds in England (7) and Australia (5) combined.

Since January 2015, Rohit has scored 22 ODI hundreds, more than any player. Virat has 20 while Warner has 15 centuries since then. Rohit has 3 ODI double hundreds when no other batsman could score it twice. He also holds the record for the most number of 150 plus score in ODI – 7.

Rohit scored 209 against Australia in 2013, 264 against Sri Lanka in 2014, 150 against South Africa in 2015, 171* against Australia in 2016, 208* against Sri Lanka in 2017, 162 against West Indies in 2018, all these scores were the highest individual score by an Indian in the mentioned years. In 2019, Rohit’s highest score in ODI is 140 against Pakistan at Old Trafford, Dhawan’s 143 against Australia is the highest for India in 2019.

Rohit also has a chance of breaking Tendulkar’s record in a calendar year. Sachin Tendulkar scored 1894 runs with 9 ODI hundreds in 1998, Rohit has scored 1203 runs with six centuries so far in 2019. The kind of form he is in it shouldn’t be difficult for Rohit to break this record as well. India will play a minimum of 7 ODIs in the remaining year. A semi-final (probably a final too) and 3 ODIs against West Indies in their den after the World cup and again 3 ODIs against West Indies in home series.

Rohit’s domination doesn’t stop at ODIs only; he has mindblowing records in T20 International cricket as well. Rohit has the most number of runs in T20 International cricket. He is the only player to score four T20 International Hundreds. He is four hits away from breaking Gayle’s record of most sixes (105) in T20 Internationals.

Rohit Sharma will have all the ODI and T20I records on his name whenever he will decide to hang the boots.

Author lashes out on Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint for distorting and misinterpreting his talk and lying in the report

Author Nityanand Misra lashed out on Shekhar Gupta’s ThePrint for distorting and misinterpreting his talk and lying in the report. The author took to Twitter to expose a recent report written by journalist Kritika Sharma for The Print.

The article was also shared by one of its editors, Rama Lakshmi. She went on to compare the author’s mission with that of former Pakistan President Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq.

The report was about a speech that the author had given at the India International Centre in Delhi last week. Instead, it turned out to be riddled with multiple factual errors and lies.

According to the author, the journalist had denied any misinterpretation and said that she was free to write what she felt. In order to get his words correctly, he had mailed her the presentation. He made repeated requests over phone, email and WhatsApp to run by him the words that were attributed to him. However, despite agreeing to do so, the journalist made no attempt to do so.

In a long Twitter thread, Nityanand Misra exposed the errors in the report one by one. The title of his presentation was “Arabic Persian free Hindi”. Yet the entire report makes no mention of the Persian language.

The author recommends avoiding/minimizing the usage of Arabic-Persian words and use Hindi yet in the report the journalist has conveniently substituted the word “Persian” with “Urdu” at several instances.

The author says he had contrasted the usage of Persian-origin ‘sarkar’ and Sanskrit-origin ‘shashan’/‘prabhutvam’ by different governments. He said he made no mention of Modi. Yet, in order to sensationalize the report, it was written the author the Modi government to be referred to as “Modi shasan” and not “Modi sarkar”.

The journalist had also lied that Misra had advised the BJP.

Misra alleged that the journalist brought in Hindutva just to sensationalize the report.

Apart from this, the report had plenty of factual errors regarding the authors work, including the number of books he had worked on and the year he had begun working for the promotion of Sanskrit and Hindi.

Misra claimed that the journalist wasn’t even present for the event and had also wrongly reported the number of people who had attended. 40 people had attended the event, yet it was reported that 150 people had attended it.

Towards the end of the report, the journalist has quoted several people who thought that Misra’s idea wouldn’t work. Misra pointed out a specific comment where Sanskrit was portrayed as an oppressive language.

At the end of the thread, the author has said that he had always been suspicious of ThePrint. He was prepared to expose them if needed. Misra said that the presentation was made public and the video would be soon uploaded onto YouTube. He said that anybody could cross-check his words.

Recently, Shekhar Gupta’s The Print pronounced punishment for the convicted in Kathua case even before the court does. The media outlet also published a bogus and statistically inaccurate ‘research’ to claim that retweeting PM Modi increases chances to get Lok Sabha ticket.
