This is what I learnt from the ‘inter-faith couple’ passport drama – don’t show your nikahnama when it’s not needed

0

Yesterday, media was abuzz with the news that a couple in Lucknow was allegedly moral policed by passport officer in Lucknow, one Vikas Mishra, who allegedly harassed an interfaith couple. In her tweets to Minister of External Affairs, Sushma Swaraj, one Tanvi Anas accused Mishra of speaking to her rudely and holding her and her Muslim husband’s passports on hold for not having changed her name after marriage.

She claimed that she has married a Muslim but has never changed her name. In subsequent tweets, she explains her ordeal to Swaraj how it is her personal choice not to change her name after marriage.

She accused that Mishra asked her to change her name after marriage as it is ‘her duty’.

However, after a huge social media uproar, Vikas Mishra, the passport office officer in question has defended himself claiming that Tanvi’s name as per nikahnama (Islamic marriage contract) was ‘Shadia Anas’, but she refused to get her name changed as per her nikahnama.

If the marriage is solemnised as per Islamic rituals, i.e. a nikahnama was drawn, instead of marriage under Special Marriage Act, Tanvi would have to convert to Islam. This would mean two things:

  1. This ceases to be inter-faith marriage.
  2. It raises the question on whether she changed her name to Shadia Anas as per her nikahnama?

Mishra, who is now transferred following Tanvi’s accusations that he asked her husband to convert to Hinduism, has claimed that he merely asked Tanvi to clarify whether she has ever changed her name. There is a column in the passport application form which requires you to fill in this detail. He claimed that the couple had gone from Noida to Lucknow, instead of going to the Ghaziabad passport office, to get the passport done on a short leave and got agitated when he raised an objection.

To this, Tanvi claimed that more than what Mishra said, she had a problem with the ‘tone’ he used.

Tanvi Anas tweets which she has now deleted.

Like everyone else, I got a little curious and did a bit of digging.

The passport declaration form [PDF] has a declaration that to the best of applicant’s knowledge, all information provided is true and correct. She has to mention her marital status in the form. If she has changed her name, she has to mention that as well.

Tanvi claims that she did not change her legal name to be the same as the name mentioned in the nikahnama because it is her personal choice. And that is true, indeed. However, the nikahnama is a valid marriage certificate as per Islam and even Indian laws (personal laws) and if the nikahnama has a different name, she is required to mention that. Hence, if there is a discrepancy between the name mentioned in the nikahnama and her legal name, the officer is well within his right to ask her to clarify and justify the discrepancy.

Interestingly, Modi government has relaxed the rules so much that woman need not provide marriage certificate for issuance of a passport. The standard affidavit which is required to be filed by a person who needs to get his/her spouse’s name added or marital status changed, does not need to submit any additional documents like a marriage certificate.

Annexure E for a standard affidavit for change of name.

Tomorrow I could get my name changed on passport and in name of spouse I could also write Salman Khan and I don’t even need a proof for that. Of course, that doesn’t mean I would get away with it considering there are strict rules and any incorrect information provided in the passport is a punishable offence, but nothing really stops anyone from providing incorrect information in the first place.

Anyway, coming back to this curious case, we have more questions.

  1. Why did Tanvi and her husband go from Noida to Lucknow for a passport when they were required to file same in Ghaziabad?
  2. Did she and her husband mention their marital status in their passport application form?
  3. When it was not required by law, why did they provide the nikahnama, especially when the nikahnama had a different name than her legal name?
  4. If an officer raises a question when there is a difference in names provided, the query does seem valid.
  5. Did they get their passports on such short notice without police verification because of the tweet?
  6. Now that they both have received their passports, within hours of tweeting to Sushma Swaraj, will there be a detailed police verification, as required by law for normal citizens who don’t get passports by tweeting to the minister get theirs?

Perhaps I should tweet this to Sushma Swaraj for a quicker response.

Create a cow ministry to protect cows, provide nourishment and also generate employment: MP minister

Swami Akhileshwaranand Giri the chairman of Cow Protection Board’s executive committee and newly elevated cabinet minister has proposed that a cow ministry is constituted by the Madhya Pradesh government, for the bovine’s preservation and protection, Times of India has reported. Currently, all the cow-related matters are handled by Animal Husbandry Department, which hasn’t made Giri happy as he wants the bovine kept out of the animal category.

As per the spiritual leader, Madhya Pradesh has the highest number of cows in the country, thus the state should take steps to protect them. As quoted by TOI, Giri claimed that indigenous livestock should be protected by every sensitive government and the cow ministry would also generate employment.

As claimed by him, bringing all the departments (cow related) would result in an enhanced budget thereby ensuring sufficient employment, nourishment and milk for people.

As per a PTI report, Giri has proposed that the cow ministry can be funded by the resources available for Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) related works. He has also complained that the cow protection board is a toothless body with a mere Rs 16 crore budget, to further press his demand for a new ministry.

As per the drafted proposal in this regard, it has been demanded that Rs 1000 crore of the Rs 15,000 crore MNREGA funds be earmarked for the ministry.

Going by the figures provided, Madhya Pradesh has about 1.96 crore cows and Giri has claimed that only 1.5 lakh of them are cared for in 604 registered cow shelters.

This proposal by Giri has started seeing political reactions, with the Congress calling it a poll strategy. Giri though has shrugged off political implications arising out of his move.

The animal husbandry minister – Antar Singh Arya seems to be playing down the demand by claiming that they haven’t received any suggestion for a cow ministry and would look into it after it arrives.

Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad claims Army Operations kill more civilians than terrorists. He is wrong

In a TV interview, senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Ghulam Nabi Azad, has claimed that Army operations kill more civilians than terrorists in Kashmir. “They (forces) take action against four terrorists and kill 20 civilians. Their action is more against civilians than terrorists. For instance, they killed 13 civilians in Pulwama and just one terrorist,” Azad was quoted as saying.

Azad also claimed that the NDA government was planning a massacre in Kashmir. “Saying that it will be an all-out operation, clearly shows that they plan to do a massacre,” he said, according to News18. Attacking Prime Minister Modi, he said, “The major reason behind the condition of Kashmir is that from the day PM Modi came to power, he has always talked about action. It seems he always wants to use the gun.”

However, data indicates that Azad’s statement has little basis in reality. According to MHA data, 17 civilians were killed in 2015 compared to 108 terrorists, 15 civilians were killed in 2016 compared to 150 terrorists and in 2017, 40 civilians were killed and 213 terrorists were eliminated. Thus far in 2018, it is being reported that 38 civilians lost their lives while 95 terrorists were put to death. It appears that Ghulam Nabi Azad, like others before, is tarnishing the reputation of the Indian Army for petty politics.

It is also intriguing that Azad would term operations against terrorists as a “massacre” squarely toeing the Pakistan line of argument.

The Indian National Congress has shared a tumultuous relationship with the Indian Army in recent times. Congress’ Sandeep Dikshit had dubbed the surgical strikes carried out by the Army as mere ‘drama’. Others had demanded proof of the strikes itself. During the Doklam standoff as well, the Congress party had some difficulty believing the government and Army’s version of events. And when Major Gogoi tied a Kashmiri stone-pelter to his jeep to ensure the safety of soldiers, a Congress leader had demanded that he be punished for performing his duty.

Mountains, oceans and sky: Indian armed forces give new dimensions to International Yoga Day

Today is International Yoga Day. After PM Modi endorsed it and encouraged people to participate enthusiastically, the Yoga Day on June 21 every year is getting more and more popular worldwide. On the occasion of Yoga Day today, people from all over the world have shared pictures and videos of performing Yoga. The Indian Armed Forces, however, have taken the celebrations to different levels, quite literally.

The soldiers of Indo-Tibetian Border Police who guard the Himalayas or Himveers as they are popularly known, practised Yoga at the height of 19,000 feet.

The ITBP official Twitter handle also posted a video showing the brave personnel practising Surya Namaskar in the icy terrains on the high Himalayas.

Soldiers of CRPF India shared the images of their Yoga routines from deep inside the jungles of Chhattisgarh. Here, the soldiers of 230th battalion of CRPF are seen celebrating the International Yoga Day somewhere deep in forests of Dantewada.

The Border Security Force (BSF) being true to their name, to their Yoga Day right to India Pakistan border outpost.

India’s Navy forms its major defence force as we are surrounded by the sea on 3 sides. Indian Navy shared some of the most beautiful and glorious images of Yoga Day.

The Indian Naval warship INS Sahyadri has just wrapped up the India-US-Japan Malabar Excercise with the US and Japanese Naval forces. Personnel on board the INS Sahyadri, which is now headed to Hawai to participate in the bi-annual RIMPAC exercise with the US Pacific Fleet, invited their Japanese counterparts too to celebrate Yoga Day together.

While terrestrial forces and Navy personnel were practising Yoga on their respective battlefields, Indian Air Force decided to do the same. Wing Commander KBS Samyal and Wing Commander Gajanand Yadav of the paratroopers training school took literally to the skies to perform Yoga, at the height of 15,000 feet!

Indian armed forces are unmatched in their valour and skills. The images of International Yoga Day celebrations prove that they are unmatched in style and ingenuity too.

The inexplicable ‘liberal’ obsession with identity

0

What is identity and what value does it hold on a public platform? Is anonymity a hurdle in debate forums? Does identity matter when discussing things in public discourse? Normally, one would expect that reasonable people would say irrespective of who says something, what is being said is important and must be the focus of attention. However, what is actually being observed is that “liberals” shut down debate and contrarian views using the argument of identity. There are several aspects to it and as such in this article four prominent “arguments” of identity presented by the so-called liberals will be uncovered.

“You are a nameless troll, scared to show your face.”

Have you ever read this as a come-back in an argument online? Did you wonder, then, as to how name, face and courage came into question in a debate? Shouldn’t the reply have been on the merits of the arguments presented by the so-called “nameless troll”?

The best example of this shouting down and discrediting is related to an anonymous handle on Twitter by the name TrueIndology. This handle tweets on history with each of its tweets backed by in-depth research and evidence of primary sources. It regularly busts fake and distorted historical narratives from the likes of Audrey Truschke, Irfan Habib, Ram Guha and many others. Yet, whenever they are caught spreading false narratives, they reply not with an apology or with the set of primary evidence on which they based their claims but with the statements along the following lines, “I am scholar who put her name on the line, you are just a faceless nameless troll, who is scared to even show his face!”

There can be many reasons for not putting your name and face on display. From simple shyness of an introvert to professional precautions to actually fear for the loss of reputation or worse fear of physical harm. The weight of words is not dependent on the name or face of the speaker or writer. Some of the greatest contributions to literature have come from anonymous writers. Mark Twain is a pseudonym and so is Prem Chand. At one point even Rabindra Nath Tagore wrote under the name Bhanu Simha.

If those that question are not nameless, if they put their name and face on their writing, on what they tweet or post on Social Media then they liberals will ask, “Who are you to question me?” This will always be followed by or prefixed by the claim that they are an “expert” or “trained scholars” on that subject. In some other cases, a slightly different claim will be that the one who said Liberal has quoted in his/her line of argument is a “scholar” with a “large body of work behind him/her”. In either case, the appeal is to “authority” that cannot be questioned by normal people. They have to be “peer reviewed” scholars themselves to question said liberals.

This particular line of reasoning to excuse themselves from criticism and questions is often used by Audrey Truschke, Sheldon Pollock and many others when their claims on Indian History and Hindu scriptures are questioned by well-read Indians like Nityananda Mishra, a Sanskrit scholar or by Indian scholars like Rajiv Malhotra.

This is, however, just one example where Indians are being removed from their own cultural and civilizational heritage. In everyday public discourse too, you’ll see that a person’s claims are given weightage simply because they claim to be a journalist, even though all their analysis till date have been wrong. I am speaking, of course, of Swati Chaturvedi and Rohini Singh.

It is important to mention here that, some of the greatest innovations and discoveries in so many fields like mathematics, economics, science and others have been from people who were not originally from that field. As a contemporary example, today few of the most popular history books in India are from an economist named Sanjeev Sanyal. Thus, somebody not being a scholar in a certain field cannot be a valid reason to discredit them and conversely, them being in a certain field doesn’t put them beyond criticism.

Identity can also be used, very effectively, to discredit a person even before that person ever utters or writes a word on anything. And this is done by the way a person is introduced or described. It can be observed very well on television debates on so-called “news channels”.

Prafulla Ketkar is described as a Right Wing activist of RSS and editor of Organiser, a magazine published by RSS. Notice that his affiliation with RSS will be mentioned foremost, Organiser being a Sangh published magazine will be clarified. Further, Prafulla Ketkar will be simply called its editor and never a ‘Journalist’.

Similar treatment is given to various other regular panalists who have Right Wing leanings like Prof. Rakesh Sinha who is often introduced as Sangh spokesperson despite him having clarified that he is not a RSS member and definitely not a spokesperson for RSS. Or Raghav Awasthi who is introduced as a RSS lawyer and not just a lawyer.

Contrast this with how John Dayal is introduced as simply a Human Rights activists and not as a member of Evangelical organisations carrying on conversions and hindering Government work through PILs, organisations that are mostly funded and controlled by the Church (The Vatican). In fact, his connection with the Church is never mentioned. Or how Tehseen Poonawala is never introduced as a relative of the Gandhis but a political analyst. Or that people like Vinod Sharma are simply called Senior Journalists and their strong anti-BJP bias is not mentioned.

This kind of assymetrical introduction achieves two goals- firstly, one side is painted as biased, while the other side is made to seem neutral. Secondly, anytime one side makes an argument in favour of its ideology or against the other ideology, that argument automatically loses weight due to them being “biased” in the eyes of observers, while the other side is put on the pedestal of “neutrality” so that even biased claims are taken on face value.

However, you’d be mistaken if you think that identity is only a means of discrediting opponents. It can just as easily be used to give undue weight to opinions and words of certain people. For liberals on the ‘Left’ identity is almost a currency. If your identity can be linked to the topic of discussion, then your feelings and opinions magically become more valid than facts. For example, on a debate on sexism, a man’s words become half in worth. But a more interesting phenomenon is that if a woman with right-wing ideological leanings disagrees with prevalent left-wing view on this topic, she will be termed as a traitor to her gender! This is Victimhood Olympics, as it is popularly called, where your identity and how much victimhood you can claim is attached to it can decide the worth of your words. When anyone makes claims that are different, they will be called oppressive and will be accused of “denying the lived experience” of others. Words like Fascist, Brahminical, Nazi, Hitler, Patriarchal will also be thrown at them for good measure.

This race for a badge of Victimhood, obviously, creates “Oppressors”. How else will there be victims? Thus, to do that certain groups are identified and a ‘strawman’ is created. And those who belong to this group are not deserving of any sympathy or human decency. Any and all attacks on this group and it’s people will be justified, no matter what the reason for the attack. In the west, the ‘Zionists’ are such a group while in India it’s the Hindus and ‘Hindutvawadis’. Somehow everybody can claim Victimhood from the “Brahminical tyranny” of Hindus. Take the recent incident with Atul Kochhar, for example, an Indian born Britain based Michelin star chef.

Atul had tweeted, referencing the numerous genocides Hindus have faced at the hands of Islamist invaders and terrorists, as a reaction to the ‘Quantico’ fiasco. Then a certain statistician of sorts, who likes to pretend to be a ‘Right Wing’ economist and call others ‘dolts’ for not agreeing with her, tagged his employers at Dubai’s JW Marriott hotel and the whole thing blew up. Now he’s lost his job and is facing death threats. But, to this economist, who couldn’t get herself or her husband a seat in the Government’s advisory- NITI Aayog- it’s no big deal. She was, as per her, “simply checking the tolerance of Dubai’s Islamist regime and how much JW Marriott valued Kochhar”!!

To the liberals in India too, it’s nothing. In fact, they celebrated this blatant attack on free speech and called it curbing of “bigotry”. Yes, denying Hindu genocide is celebrated by liberals in India, the land of Hindus! Contrast this with the fact that denying Jewish genocide is actually a crime in Germany, the land where the Nazis actually did the genocide. This is because if Hindu genocide is accepted, the strawman of “Brahminical tyranny by Hindutvawadis” falls apart. This cannot be allowed! After all, how can victims of genocides, yes MULTIPLE genocides, be termed as the oppressors of the invading genocidal maniacs?

Therefore, bigotry against Hindus has to be justified. Hyperbolic articles, with zero data, based merely on extrapolating single incidents must be written to defame Hindus and Nationalists in Washington Post by Barkha Dutt. Rana Ayyub must go to UN pretending to be a victim to defame India. Ravish Kumar must cry every night at Primetime how Modi is scared of his failing channel. Sagarika Ghose must test the religion of non-existent semen in an incident that involved no man. Shekhar Gupta must look at Dalit non-involvement everywhere except the Editor’s Guild. All of this must go on, and incessantly so, for if there is silence for even a mere second this identitarian House of Cards built by “liberals” crumbles under its own weight of hypocrisy and retardedness.

This insistence, or rather obsession, of ‘Liberals’ with identity, is due to only one reason. And that is that ‘Liberals’ are, in fact, the most intolerant, fascist folks. The insistence on the identity of a person making valid point engaging in a debate is nothing but an attempt to browbeat the other person by name, birth, creed and social status.

Hence, embrace your anonymity, embrace your being from a different field of study, embrace the asymmetrical description and embrace your identity unblemished by pretend Victimhood and confront these so-called ‘Liberals’ every chance you get.

Call out their hypocrisy and call out their logical shortcomings. Remember, in a public forum you are not arguing to change the other person’s stance but to change the opinions of the onlookers. Do not pay mind to these labels they throw at you and go debate them at every chance you get! Take all of this and the abuses they throw at you as a badge of honour. Wear it with pride. For, the moment you take away their ability to insult with pejoratives, they don’t have a word to say. That is when you win!

International Yoga Day: Differently abled persons attempt to set world record for ‘largest silent Yoga class’

In an attempt to make this International yoga day unique, around 800 differently-abled persons from across the country attempt Guinness World Record for ‘Largest Silent Yoga Class’ on International Yoga Day 2018 in Ahmedabad.

They have been receiving training since May from yoga experts at Shivanand Ashram. The participants will be directed through headphones connected via Bluetooth for demonstration and can also follow the yoga instructor on stage. They have been chosen from 10 city-based organizations like Blind People’s Association (BPA), Apang Manav Mandal and Andh Kanya Prakash Gruh among others.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said, “People all over the world celebrated the 4th International Yoga Day by remembering and practising our ancient culture.

The first International Day of Yoga was observed all over the world on June 21, 2015, where more than 30,000 people, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, performed yoga asanas at Rajpath in New Delhi. The idea of International Day of Yoga was first proposed by Prime Minister Modi during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 27, 2014.

This year, the national event was held at Dehradun’s Forest Research Institute with the participation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Modi highlighted the importance of yoga, a gift from India to the world. ”Yoga has the perfect solution to the problems we face, either as individuals or in society. Yoga is beautiful because it is ancient yet modern,” he said.

In 2016, on the similar occasion of International Yoga day, some differently-abled people had performed yoga asanas in a unique dance form in the national capital, in their attempt to promote yoga universally. Thousands of people, including schoolchildren to old aged ones performed yoga in the heart of Delhi, Connaught place area in 2016.

Yoga is gaining popularity in recent times as a holistic system of health and healing, with millions of people across the world taking it up seriously. The beginnings of Yoga were developed by the Indus-Sarasvati civilization in Northern India over 5,000 years ago. The word Yoga was first mentioned in the oldest sacred texts, the Rig Veda. Yoga was slowly refined and developed by the Brahmans and Rishis who documented their practices and beliefs in the Upanishads.

In the pre-classical stage, Yoga was a potpourri of various ideas, beliefs, and techniques that often conflicted and contradicted each other. The classical period was the period when Yoga got a concrete definition by Patanjali’s Yoga-Sutras, the first systematic presentation of Yoga. Maharishi Patanjali the ‘father of Yoga’ compiled 195 Yoga Sutras that became the foundation of Yoga philosophy. The commentary on these sutras is called Bhasya. The core essence of Patanjali is the eightfold path of Yoga (Ashtanga Yoga) that focusses upon healthy living through Yoga.

India’s war with ISIS: The staggering numbers that no one seems to be talking about

Much is often written about the Insurgency issue in Kashmir. Seldom, people talk about the radical Islamist problem that has gripped the state and it only seems to be getting worse. However, there seems to be a concerted silence about ISIS taking root in the country, and the silent battle India is fighting on that front.

The data on the subject is pretty clear. In 2014, 6 people were arrested by Indian security agencies for pro-ISIS sentiments and engaging in behaviour supportive of the Jihadist terror group. In 2015, that number rose to 19. Again in 2016, the numbers saw a rise and 54 people were arrested for pro-ISIS sentiments. In 2017, however, the number came down to 34.

These are just numbers of those arrested, those suspected to have actually joined ISIS is much higher. 88 people from around the country are believed to have joined ISIS, the majority of them from Kerala, a state which has increasingly come under the grip of Jihadist influence with political parties hesitant to effectively deal with extremist groups. If these numbers were not worrying enough, 25 Indians are believed to have been killed as well fighting for ISIS.

It has been open knowledge for quite a while that ISIS has been trying hard to gain a foothold in India. A terror organization that morphed into existence during the chaos in the Middle East has metastasized into a malignant tumour that is proving to be a critical global threat.

Reports had emerged that ISIS has prepared a blueprint for the establishment of an Islamic Caliphate in the Kashmir Valley. In recent times, ISIS flags have started appearing in the valley as well, in addition to the Pakistani flags which are sighted quite often enough. Reports had also suggested that ISIS supporters and sympathizers have also started a group in Kashmir, Ansarul Khilafah, to further the agenda of the terrorist organization.

To make matters worse, it’s not just isolated areas in the country which are affected by the ISIS threat. ISIS flags have been hoisted even in the northeastern state of Assam, a state that is undergoing a tectonic demographic shift as a consequence of illegal immigration from Bangladesh. ISIS sympathizers and terrorists have been arrested from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh as well. It’s fast turning out to be a pan-Indian phenomenon.

It could not have escaped ISIS’ notice that they have vast recruitment opportunities in India. Some might be inclined to scream ‘bigot’ whenever a person makes the suggestion that a significant chunk of the Muslim community, a small minority, yes, but significant, is very susceptible towards joining the ranks of the terror outfit.

For instance, offices of an Indian newspaper were attacked for merely using a cartoon pig to depict the funding sources of ISIS. Then there are the conflicts during Hindu festivals where Hindu processions are attacked by members of a community who are extremists by all means. One doesn’t have to be as intelligent as Einstein to realize that people with such tendencies are ripe for joining the ranks of ISIS if they manage to gain access to them. And we do know that ISIS is a tech-savvy terror organization and they could in the future target these sections of the community for recruitment.

The greatest threat of ISIS is their ability to influence young minds through the effective use of the internet. As we have seen in the West, terrorists who were radicalized online took it upon themselves to kill, main and slaughter in the name of their religion. And as the data shows, ISIS has been gaining ground in India lately.

They haven’t been able to mount any manner of attack but that is certainly not for lack of trying. One should credit the current government and the security agencies for thwarting attempts by terrorists on several occasions in recent times. The unique circumstance in India that make it more susceptible to the ISIS threat is the fact that many political parties are quite willing to sacrifice national interests for electoral benefits.

Some might even be willing to ignore the threat that ISIS poses or even put up with if it allows them to secure their hold in power.

All of these factors combined make India a fertile ground for ISIS to take hold. Thus far, things have been kept relatively in check by Indian security agencies. However, as circumstances in Europe have shown, it does not take too for things to go from bad to worse.

A step closer to cashless economy : BHIM-UPI hits a record high of 1 crore transactions in a day

A great milestone in the growth of digital payment in India was achieved on 20th of June 2018 when BHIM-UPI transactions hit a record high of 1 crore transactions in a day. Digital payment in India saw a massive push by the Government after demonetization in November 2016.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a unique digital payment platform called BHIM-UPI in December 2016. It is pertinent to note that a simple mobile based account to account digital payment platform like BHIM-UPI is a unique technology innovation of India and no other country in the world has developed something similar to BHIM-UPI. The popularity of BHIM UPI platform can be understood from the fact that internet giants like Google and Whatsapp have also developed their dedicated their digital payment products based on BHIM UPI exclusively for India. Google Tez or Whatsapp payment application are not available anywhere outside India.

Rising popularity of digital payment in India can be understood from the figures given below.

Source : NPCI

The Narendra Modi led NDA government has given an unprecedented push to digital transactions. In fact, we had reported how some user suggestions to make the BHIM UPI app better was also adopted by NPCI. The BHIM app had also gone international recently with its launch in Singapore. In a boost to Modi’s cashless economy clarion call, Visa had also reduced its transaction cost on Debit Cards by 95%.

On International Yoga day Sagarika Ghose again provides people a glimpse into her hypocrisy

Controversial journalist Sagarika Ghose decided to give social media users a glimpse of her hypocrisy on the occasion of International Yoga Day after she decided to attack the Modi government for promoting Yoga:

As seen in the above tweet, Sagarika after claiming to be a believer in yoga, expressed concern over why the government needed to promote it. She thus attacked the Modi government for rapidly becoming “an escapist Bollywood film” to distract people from the prevailing hard realities.

Social Media users after noticing her tweet did not take her attack on face value and decided to dig a bit about her past views on this subject. Almost predictably, they managed to uncover her tweet from back in 2010 when she was trying to preach something which is completely contradictory to her current outburst:

As seen in the 2010 tweet, Sagarika is seen questioning why the NDA government did not promote the Hindu causes like Yoga, Ayurveda or Ganga while it was in power. But eight years onward when the Modi government is indeed doing the same, Sagarika – rather than taking credit for it, has decided to launch an attack.

Incidentally, the hypocrisy of Sagarika extends to other matters.

We had reported in July 2017 how she had tried to expose filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, during the latter’s troubles owing to protests by the Congress against his movie Indu Sarkar. This though didn’t end well for Sagarika as Bhandarkar saw through her move, and coolly went on to expose her own hypocrisy.

Her hypocrisy was also visible when she was seen openly suggesting strategies to defeat the BJP in 2019, despite herself claiming the previous day that, journalists should stay away from politics, and not be loyal to any political party.

Congress defeated in Gujarat Panchayat polls, Congress State President’s hometown goes to BJP

The Gujarat Congress has yet again failed to hold on to the power in Gujarat District and Taluk Panchayats, despite the efforts of their senior leaders. The Congress party, under the presidentship of Rahul Gandhi, has lost 5 district panchayats and about 30 taluka Panchayat in the state that went for elections of office-bearers.

In 2015, the Congress had won 23 of 31 district panchayats and 146 of 239 taluka panchayats. This performance of the Congress party was considered as a massive victory for the Congress party in Gujarat which is widely considered as BJP’s home turf. Based on the performance, the Congress party had also done reasonably well in the 2017 Assembly polls by restricting ruling BJP below 100 in 182-seat State Assembly.

Generally, elections are held every two-and-a-half years among elected representatives of these panchayats to re-elect president and vice-president to Panchayat bodies.

With the BJP wresting Ahmedabad, Patan, Bhavnagar, Mahisagar and Dahod district panchayats, the Congress’ tally now stood at 18. Congress also lost its power in about 30 taluka panchayats, including in Umreth of Anand district, the hometown of State Congress President Amit Chavda. Earlier, Congress had lost control over a Panchayat in Amreli, the hometown of the leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani.

The Congress, which had won these local bodies in 2015, accused the ruling BJP of using money power to “buy” its elected members. Gujarat unit Congress president Amit Chavda alleged the BJP had paid Rs 25 lakh to Rs 2 crore to each Congress councillor for cross-voting.

Gujarat Congress president Amit Chavda said that the BJP used State Government machinery and money power to lure Congress members with a malign motive to snatch Panchayat bodies from the Congress party.

Gujarat BJP president Jitu Vaghani slammed Congress and said the members of the Congress voted in favour of BJP nominees because they were “fed up with the Congress leadership”. “The Congress lost because of infighting and over-confidence,” Vaghani told reporters in Gandhinagar.
