Seasoned journalists and editors fall for a parody account’s tweet with religious overtones

0

A parody account’s tweet posting an imagined response to the controversy surrounding lyrics of a viral Malayalam song made waves on Twitter. One of the reasons for its stupendous success was that the attempted humour was not too far from something that could have happened in reality.

Seasoned journalists and editors with blue ticks fell for the tweet.

Vidya Krishnan, health & science Editor of The Hindu, IRP Fellow2015 and contributor to Caravan India was one of the journalists who fell for the tweet. The tweet by Vidya Krishnan condemning the ‘Tharki Buddhu’ was retweeted by another journalist of The Hindu, Vasudha Venugopal.

Samrat X, former editor of newspapers in Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chandigarh thought that the tweet was real.

We are not sure if Saurabh Joshi, editor of StratPost and Delhi Durbar thought it was a parody account or a real one.

Bhuvan Bagga, a South Asia correspondent for AFP has already deleted his tweet, but we have a screenshot.

In case you wondered, this is Poe’s Law at work.

Congress distances itself from suspended Mani Shankar Aiyar after he hailed Pakistan

0

In a bid to stop him from further damaging the electoral prospects, Congress has distanced itself from suspended leader Mani Shankar Aiyar’s pro-Pakistan statement even as other Congress leaders are demanding his expulsion from the party.

The suspended Congress leader was in Pakistan recently to attend the Karachi Literature Festival where he called for an “uninterrupted and uninterruptible” dialogue between India and Pakistan in a session and proclaimed that he was “proud” of Pakistan for pursuing a scope for dialogue with India but sad due to the lack of reciprocation by their counterparts at New Delhi. “And I am very proud and half very sad that this sentence of these three words has been accepted as Pakistan policy, but has not been accepted as Indian policy,” said Aiyar as quoted by Pakistani media.

Today, while interacting with media, Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi, said that whatever Aiyar said in Pakistan was his own view and did not reflect views of the party.

This wasn’t the first time that Mani Shankar Aiyar has said something condemnable and left his party red-faced. Prior to the Gujarat elections, he had called the Prime Minister “neech” which had elicited a strong response from all quarters and led to his suspension from the Congress Party. In 2015, he had sparked a huge controversy after he requested the Pakistanis to remove the Narendra Modi government and bring the Congress back to power if they wanted talks to continue during a panel discussion in Pakistan.

Punjab National Bank Reports massive fraudulent transactions worth 1.7 Billion USD

0

The Punjab National Bank today had reported that it has uncovered fraudulent and unauthorised transactions worth about 1.7 billion USD in one of its branches in Mumbai. The bank has said in a letter that they have found these transactions to have happened with a few select accounts and with the connivance of the respective account holders. Based on these transactions other banks had advanced money to the account holders in their offshore accounts. The PNB had estimated the total liability of the fraudulent transactions to be around 1.7 billion USD. They have also stated that they have alerted the Law Enforcement Authorities regarding this matter.

As per reports, the Central Bureau of Investigation has received two complains against billionaire jewellery designer Nirav  Modi and his company from the PNB. As per latest reports, PNB shares had fallen as much as 8% after news of these fraudulent transactions came to light.

More than a week ago, CBI had booked Nirav Modi, his family members and a business partner for another case of cheating worth Rs 280 crores on a complaint by PNB.

After today’s news of massive financial scam came out, social media is abuzz with opinions and allegations regarding this scam.

Further details on the scam are awaited.

Pakistan to be put on ‘Financial Action Task Force’ watchlist for global terror financing

0

The USA has approached Financial Action Task Force, an anti money laundering monitoring group, to put Pakistan on a global terror financing watchlist, according to a Pakistani official. The US believes Pakistan has been unwilling in its attempts to crack down on terrorist havens within its borders unequivocally. Pakistan had been on the FATF watchlist from 2012-15.

State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said, “The U.S. has consistently expressed our long-standing concern about ongoing deficiencies in Pakistan’s implementation of its anti-money laundering/counterterrorism finance regime.” She firmly denied that the US was working on behalf of India and added that the concerns include Pakistan’s non-compliance with its commitments under UN resolutions.

President Donald Trump has repeatedly asserted that Pakistan needs to act against the terrorist safe havens within its borders. On the first day of the New Year, he expressed his displeasure with the Pakistani administration of not honoring their part of the deal.

The President singled out Pakistan last year when he announced his national security strategy. He had said,  “We make massive payments every year to Pakistan. They have to help.” Only a few days after the tweet on January 1, President Trump’s administration suspended over 2 billion dollars in security assistance to Pakistan.

In response to pressure from the US, Pakistan has been signalling its willingness to take concrete actions against terrorists to secure the inflow of money and escape further stringent action. Recently, it amended its anti-terrorism law to ban terrorist organizations recognized by the United Nations. However, The USA seems unsatisfied with their efforts and is trying to put them on FATF watchlist which is expected to have a negative impact on Pakistan’s economy.

Karnataka govt damages Lokayukta, corruption charges against Kharge hit a dead end under Siddaramaiah

0

The Congress government in Karnataka has done immense damage to the independence of Lokayukta (ombudsman) of the state. The judicial officer of the Lokayukta had to approach the High Court to protect the independence of the office from government intervention earlier in January. The government had decided to move a privilege motion against the Lokayukta for not appearing before a legislative assembly committee. The committee wanted to know about the utilisation of funds given to the Lokayukta even though its finances had already been scrutinised by CAG (comptroller & auditor general) of India annually.

After this episode, the independence and image of Lokayukta has taken a serious hit. In addition to this, the government had clipped the wings of Lokayukta soon after assuming power by creating another anti-corruption bureau which it can control better. As a result of this, corruption charges against Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of the opposition in Lok Sabha have hit a dead end. The charges against Mr Kharge and his family members are huge. The complaint filed way back in December 2014 has not made much progress under the Karnataka government led by Siddaramaiah.

Details of the corruption charges against Kharge

The corruption charges were filed against Mallikarjun Kharge by B Rathnakar, the General Secretary of the Samaj Parivarthan Samithi of Karnataka. He had alleged that Kharge has property in excess of 50,000 crores. The wealth has been amassed during his tenure as revenue minister as per the complaint. Mr Rathnakar has also alleged that Kharge has illegally appointed 1427 assistant engineers and junior engineers during his tenure as minister. The complainant has also accused Kharge of lying on oath while filing his election affidavit.

Justice Santosh Hegde praises the Lokayukta officer for approaching HC, slams government

Meanwhile, former Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde told The Newsminute that the Lokayukta officer did the right thing by approaching the high court. He also told that the government had taken away powers of Lokayukta during its tenure by creating an anti-corruption bureau of its own.  former Justice Hegde said :

The very fact that they (state government) created ACB (Anti-Corruption Bureau) and took away the power of probing anti-corruption cases from the Lokayukta is an act to make the Lokayukta weak. Now, what is left with the institution?

After finding that the Lokayukta could be proactive, the IAS, IPS officers lobby is also trying to create hurdles for the institution and the government is not doing anything to stop it. This itself shows that there is a hand in glove action on the part of the government. It is in the interest of the politicians and IAS officers to make sure that the institution becomes totally useless and also defame it in public.

Thus it appears that the erosion of Karnataka Lokayukta’s powers during Siddaramaiah’s tenure has helped stall high profile corruption cases including that of the leader of opposition in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge.

Muslim woman deletes Facebook account after rape threats by Islamists, Communist says not as bad as Khap threatening women

It requires special skills to drag in Hindus for rape threats to a Muslim woman by rabid Islamists, and this skill was displayed by a communist last night on Facebook. The Muslim woman here is a JNU ‘student leader’ named Shehla Rashid and communist is a ‘women’s rights activist’ named Kavita Krishnan.

Shehla had earlier wrote a Facebook post in wake of murder of a Hindu boy Ankit Saxena, who was killed by the family members of his Muslim girlfriend for falling in love with her. In her Facebook post, she had asked her ‘Muslim friends’ if they would let their sisters and daughters marry a non-Muslim man of her choice. She expected Muslims to say they’d allow so, in order to retain moral rights against the concept of ‘Love Jihad’.

However, the reactions to her posts were just opposite to what she thought her Muslim friends will come up with. As our report had highlighted, many Muslim users commented on her post condemning her for asking such a question. Some declared that they will choose Quran – which prohibits marriage of a Muslim woman with a non-Muslim man – over the constitution of India that allows inter-faith marriages. One user even supported the killing saying it was the ‘final solution’ to maintain ‘prestige of houses’.

Now it appears that not only such Muslim users disagreed with Shehla vehemently, some of them went ahead to issue rape threats to her for having spoken about rights of Muslim woman to marry a non-Muslim man.

(Update: obscene abuses and rape threats were apparently issued to Shehla in response to another Facebook post, where she had asked her ‘Muslim brothers and sisters’ to reject a conspiracy theory, ironically floated by a Congress supporter who himself had issued rape threats a few years ago. The conspiracy theory claimed that ‘right wing’ had killed Ankit Saxena. A screenshot of the abuses – strong language disclaimers apply – can be seen here)

This forced Shehla to deactivate her Facebook account, as claimed by Kavita Krishnan. Krishnan, who, ironically, is the Secretary at All India Progressive Women’s Association, and throws women’s rights out of the window when it comes to defending sexual offenders from the Left-Liberal cabal, came out ‘in solidarity with’ Shehla over this incident.

In a post on Facebook, Krishnan condemned the ‘misinterpretation’ of Shehla’s post by rabid Islamists, only to soften the blow, if there was any, by implying how ‘hateful rape threats’ by these men were not as bad as patriarchy of Khaps and ‘Sangh’.

In her post, Krishnan explains to Muslim fundamentalists who abused Shehla and issued rape threats to her, that Shehla never meant to ‘encourage’ Muslim woman marrying Hindus. Instead of outrightly condemning those who issued threats and asking for police action against such criminal behaviour, Krishnan laments that this episode will be used by ‘right wing Sanghis’ to brand Muslims as ‘backward and patriarchal’.

If that apologia was not enough, Krishnan went on to say that Khap is way more ‘dangerous’ and patriarchal since it has ‘state backing’ and court and police support the Hindu upper caste patriarchy and ‘cooperate’ with it, unlike the Muslims.

Borrowing from Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, this statement by Krishnan is “Shocking” to say the least. Krishnan’s contention that Islamic patriarchy doesn’t get state support is an absolute lie. That it comes after the nation had debated the instant triple talaq issue at length also shows the brazenness with which communists like Krishnan peddle their agenda.

It should be noted that the state sanctions the personal laws of Muslims, which legitimised the practice of instant triple talaq, which is as patriarchal a practice as it can get. The practice continues unabated even though the Supreme Court termed it null and void last year. A law that sought to punish the practice got stuck in the parliament, as opposition leaders and even ‘activists’ like her termed the law ‘majoritarian’ and indulged in whataboutery:

The biggest example of state supporting Muslim patriarchy, which Krishnan denies, is when Rajiv Gandhi led Congress government overturned the landmark Supreme Court judgement in Shah Bano case, which granted her alimony from her husband who divorced her.

There are many other aspects of the shariyat law, which is the basis of personal laws of Muslims in India, which are patriarchal, such as unequal share in property, polygamy, etc. and all these aspects are sanctioned by the state in form of personal laws, yet, for Krishnan, the state backing does not exist. Unless Krishnan believes Sharia is same as feminism, what she just said about Muslim patriarchy and state support is truckloads of nonsense.

Further, Muslim patriarchy also enjoys the backing via the clout of the community. Law enforcement officers tend to think twice over ‘interfering’ in a ‘communally sensitive’ issue. Most of the ‘Muslim leaders’ and clerics have routinely and openly taken stand that can hardly be called ‘feminist’. Yet, for Krishnan, this is not as bad as Khap.

Not just state and ‘community’ support, Muslim patriarchy gets direct and indirect “intellectual support” too, because the self-styled liberals and ‘seculars’ in India go soft on these issues in the name of minority rights. Following statement by a former Editor of left-leaning newspaper The Hindu is an example of that:

Krishnan’s Facebook post itself is an example of how Muslim patriarchy gets ‘intellectual support’ because she brings in Khaps, Sangh and other people and refuses to unequivocally condemn it.

Now what is more dangerous? Hindu patriarchy that gets bashed by the intellectuals, is curbed by the laws, is being progressively discouraged by the society in general, or Muslim patriarchy that is sanctioned by the state, backed by the community, and whitewashed by the intellectuals? Unless you live in a parallel universe (not be confused with JNU), the answer is obvious.

Indian middle-class is setting the national vision: Limiting them to debates on tax benefits does more harm than good

0

Before we begin to discuss the merits and demerits of the Budget SOPs for the Indian middle class, it is pertinent to understand that while conceptualizing the markings of a sizable group of hard-working, aspirational masses, it is almost impossible to establish its broad contours.

From being ignored entirely by the political class from their meta-narratives to being bracketed to budget tax considerations, the grand vision of the middle-class growth has been unable to take shape since the time India gained Independence. It was only in 2014 that the Indian middle classes began asserting themselves as a somewhat coherent block, rallying behind the twin issues of transparent governance and economic development. It was the result of this unique consolidation that the Modi government won a resounding majority and thus, ended the era of coalition politics and its compulsions.

Since then Prime Minister Narendra Modi has remained a popular figure among the aspirational class, making long-pending structural changes in a short span of four years with their firm support. The fact that the salaried and professionals continue to side with the development plank without the misgivings of the media, election after election, says a thing or two about the bond Modi has forged with them.

But is the connection between the Modi government and the middle class based on election rhetoric and cosmetic changes such as tax cuts the government offers? Are the tax cuts the primary motivation of the urban middle class to vote Modi to power or did they vote him to achieve a higher end?

If one were to analyse the nature of the Modinomics, it would become clear that it does not entertain quick fixes. Instead, it entails accelerating the pace of broad-based reforms that have a direct impact on all sections of the society over medium to long run.

In the past three and half years, the government has smoothly got India removed from the notorious list of fragile five and turned it into the most sorted league of one of the fastest economies in the world. She has jumped 42 points in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business rankings, indicating efficacy of large reforms initiated by the current dispensation. The latest figures provided in the Economic Survey 2017-18 show that Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the financial year 2016-17 had reached an all-time high of US $ 60.08 billion. The exponential rise of India’s economic fortunes is not a case of a good timing, but of a sustained momentum to make the environment more investment-friendly, which would ultimately lead to more higher-paying white collar jobs.

During the last leg of UPA 2’s tenure, the double-digit inflation had played havoc on the daily expenditure of the households. Controlling the spiralling price rise and keeping it in check has again shown prudent fiscal management, beneficial for the economy in general and the middle class in particular. With the inflation down, the lower interest rates, home loans have become cheaper. The goal of having your own house is increasingly becoming a reality. Better roads, modernisation of Indian railways, cheaper air travel and enhanced digital connectivity have made the lives of the middle class more mobile, in tune with the fast pace of a modern lifestyle.

Besides the economic measures, the government is heavily investing in ensuring a healthy citizenry. In the absence of any robust institutional support, the cost burden of medical exigencies is majorly borne by the people out of their own pockets, keeping them entrapped in the cycle of poverty and debt. 70 percent of healthcare expenses in India are incurred by people from their pockets, of which 70 percent is spent on medicines alone. In that sense, opening up of Jan Aushidhi Kendras that provide generic drugs to all sections of the society at a cheaper cost, bringing down the prices of corollary stents and kneecaps and now provisioning for a health insurance cover of Rs. 5 lakh per year for every family is proving the age-old adage the government seems to be following- “Health is Wealth”.

New IITs, IIMs, medical colleges are de-congesting the already burdened higher institutions. Such merit-based institutions are the nerves of a burgeoning middle class that aspires for nothing less than the best. In the budget 2018-19, the government has committed Rs. 85,010 crore for improvement of education in the country. It will not be wrong to conclude that the government is creating wealth out of healthy citizens and turning them into an asset by skilling them.

As per the Economic Survey 2017-18, since demonetisation, there has been a significant expansion of tax base. Though the number of new taxpayers increased by 10.1 million post demonetisation, it still remains far from the expected percentage of 23 percent. Such a situation provides little room to play up the taxes for a government presiding over a large population still deprived of basic necessities. In order to end the cycle of perpetual poverty, the government needs to invest heavily in social sector reforms as well as create infrastructure resilient enough to face any eventualities that arise in the future.

Though the salaried class have not received any tax relief in the fifth budget of the Modi government, that does not mean that their contribution to the nation building is left unacknowledged. The current metric of “Ease of Living” adopted by the government to measure its progress, precisely takes into account the number of obstacles it has been able to do away with to smoothen the road for the citizens to soar.

The endearing nature of the Indian middle class is that it is relentless in its pursuit. It does not wait for the government of the day to offer them a way out. They deliver despite systematic hurdles. The Modi government reading the writing on the wall is working to remove these institutional barriers and put a premium on honesty, which directly benefits the middle class. A block as wide as Indian middle class with diverse choice and needs cannot be limited to tax relief and discounts. In fact, such an assertion does more harm than good. It devaluates the unparalleled contribution of the Indian middle class in India’s growth story and limits their economic leverage to a few tax benefits.

Beggar woman from West Bengal uses a chunk of her alms to build a toilet

0

A beggar from West Bengal’s Murshidabad district has decided to construct a toilet, and in the process used up part of the alms she had saved over the years.

As covered by Hindustan Times, a resident of Nowdapara, 75-year-old Rahima Bewa recounts how people told her about the harmful effects of open defecation. Bewa who had lived without a toilet all her life decided to change things and as a result, constructed one at the cost of around Rs 15,000.

Funded by a part of her meagre savings, the construction of the toilet has begun with the purchase of bricks and pipes and arrival of masons. After being complete, it will be the only brick and mortar structure in her house which is otherwise built out of mud.

The life of Bewa who takes care of her 50-year-old differently-ableded daughter, has been marred with tragedy, with includes her being thrown out of her previous house, by her sons. Bewa’s husband Din Mohammad who used to be a farmer, died 20 years ago, which forced her into begging.

Her sons not only threw her out of ‘their’ home, but they also took the subsidy provided by the state government for construction of toilets.

With the government of West Bengal being hostile towards the Central government, it has created its own form of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, called Nirmal Bangla. Under this scheme, the state government provides Rs 10,000 for the toilet’s construction and the benefactor has to pay Rs 900.

Even though Bewa isn’t eligible for any grant, the Block Development Officer (BDO) of Behrampore has assured that they would help her.

A similar incident to that of Bewa has come to light from Bihar where, another such poor woman has built a toilet using the money she raised by knocking on the doors of nearby villagers. The woman Amina Khatoon, in Bihar’s Koshi region is a widow and works as a labourer.

As per Amina, she had gone to the block level officers asking for funds but they decided to ignore her plea. Sensing he commitment towards the cause, a few labourers decided to help her in building the toilet free of cost. The district administration later finally decided to wake up to the matter and felicitated her for her efforts.

Air Traffic Controllers Guild wants legal action against Times of India

0

The Air Traffic Controllers Guild, in a letter to the Chairman of Airports Authority of India, have demanded that legal action be taken against The Times of India for erroneous reporting of the incident of two aircrafts coming close in the Mumbai sky on 7th February. The ATCG letter titled, “Misleading Reports on ATC” states that Times of India, in two news reports carried on 11th February and 12th February have deliberately tried to tarnish the image of Air Traffic Controllers and their profession.

The incident happened on 7th February when the Vistara flight from Delhi to Pune was flying, as UK 320 AND Air India’s Airbus AI 319 was flying from Mumbai to Bhopal. The two planes had come dangerously close mid-air as the Vistara flight was descending from its assigned 29,000 feet and the AI plane was seconds away from it coming from the opposite direction. At this point, Air India’s Captain Anupama Kohli, who was flying the Airbus heard the communication between the ATC and the Vistara pilot. The ATC, as per the reports was asking the Vistara pilot “why are you on this level”. The Vistara plane was also being flown by a female pilot at that time as the command pilot was on a break. Captain Kohli had seen the Vistara plane closing in when the advisory system alarm (Resolution Advisory) went off in her cockpit with instructions of “climb, climb”. Captain Anupama Kohli had immediately taken her plane up and turned, very nearly avoiding a mishap.

The Air India had also praised Captain Kohli for her presence of mind and quick action.

The letter by the ATCG states that the ATC staff had done a commendable job on that day. Their action was absolutely immaculate and completely under ICAO norms. The letter further alleges that there had also been previous attempts to project a poor image of ATCOs in India.

The letter expresses concern over vital details of the incident being leaked to the media outlet and the newspaper, for two consecutive days have published the maligning news items hence thoroughly demoralising and agitating the Controllers at Mumbai Airport. The letter also highlights the fact that few officials within the Airport Authority of India and DGCA are leaking classified information to the media and they have requested the officials to be identified and deterrent measures like defamation suits should be taken against the media house.

The TOI report on 12th February reports that the Air Traffic Controllers handling the two flights on that day were suspended. The report also seems to be hinting that there was confusion and miscommunications on the controller’s part on that day. However, the 11th February report states that DGCA has grounded two Vistara pilots following the incident.

The letter by the ATCG also has requested the AAI to appoint a designated spokesperson to brief the public through the media about the veracity of such reports in the press. They have expressed concern over how the information that the Vistara flight was being flown by a lady pilot at that time was leaked to the press.

Read why the viral Priya Varrier song is allegedly ‘hurting sentiments of muslims’

0

After countless memes, the viral song of Priya Prakash Varrier, Manikya Malaraya Poovi seems to have run into troubled waters. It is the latest romantic song from the upcoming Malayalam movie Oru Adaar Love. Now, it might become the subject matter of an FIR.

As per reports, a group of Muslim youth has filed a complaint at the Falaknuma Police Station in Hyderabad against the actor Priya Prakash Varrier and the makers of the song for allegedly hurting sentiments of Muslims. The complaint says the song ‘Manikya Malaraya Poovi’, when translated into English, allegedly insults the Prophet. Syed Faiyaz, ACP Falaknuma has confirmed the above.

The ACP also added that the youth had not submitted video proof and that the cops had asked them to provide the same. As a result, no FIR has been registered yet.

Much before the above, users on social media had discovered that the words of the song actually praised Khateeja, wife of Prophet Mohammad

So what do the lyrics mean? As per lyrics sites, the lyrics roughly translate as below:

Manikya malaraya poovi,
(A girl like a pearl flower)

Mahathiyam ka khadeeja Beevi,
[Here highness khadeeja Beevi]

Makkayenna punya naatil, Vilasidum Naari, Vilasidum Naari,
(The woman who lived like a queen in the holy city of Mecca)

Maanikya malaraya puvi,
(A girl like a pearl flower)

Mahathiyam ka khadeeja Beevi,
[Here highness khadeeja Beevi]

Makkayenna punya naatil, Vilasidum Naari, Vilasidum Naari,
(The woman who lived like a queen in the holy city of Mecca)

Haathimunnabeye vilichu,
[She called khathim an Nabbiyyin Prophet Mohammed ]

Kacha vadatheen ayachu,
(Sent as in charge of her trade expedition)

Kanda neram khalbinullil, Mohamoudichu..Mohamoudichu..
(First sight of him ,Her Qalb (heart) desired him,)

Kachavaradum Kayinj,  Muthrasoolulla vann,
(Blessed Rasoolulla came back after expedition)

Kaliyana aaalojanaikyaay Beevi Thunij.. Beevi Thunij..
(To marry the Prophet was the Beevi desire)

Manikya malaraya poovi,
(A girl like a pearl flower)

Mahathiyam ka khadeeja Beevi,
[Here highness khadeeja Beevi]

Makkayenna punya naatil, Vilasidum Naari, Vilasidum Naari,
(The woman who lived like a queen in the holy city of Mecca)

While an FIR has not yet been registered, it will be most interesting to see the reaction of the “pseudo-seculars” here. A movie named “Sexy Durga” was argued to be perfectly fine and in line with freedom of expression. Will this song receive similar support?
