Madhya Pradesh: Two farmers commit suicide within a week of loan waiver announcement by Kamal Nath

Within the last few days, two farmers in Karnataka too have committed suicide after they failed to repay their farm loans.

Days after a farmer in Congress-ruled Madhya Pradesh committed suicide because he was ineligible for loan waiver, another farmer in Shajapur has reportedly committed suicide because of debt. As per reports, a farmer in Kalapipal has committed suicide by consuming poison.

Prem Narayan Raghuvanshi, a 65-year-old farmer had taken two loans, Rs. 3 lakh loan from a private bank and Rs. 2 lakh loan from a cooperative society. The only earning member of the family, he owned 10 acres of land but the excess rainfall had killed his soya crop last year. Inadequate rain this year ruined his wheat crop.

As per reports, he was getting incessant calls from the bank regarding repayment of loans and when he reminded the bank about loan waiver scheme, the bank reportedly said it is yet to get instructions. Depressed, he consumed poison on 22nd December. Raghuvanshi passed away earlier today.

On 22nd December, a farmer in Khandwa, who had taken a loan of Rs. 3 lakh for agricultural purpose, committed suicide. The farmer, who was ‘ineligible’ for loan waive off, hung himself.

In Karnataka, another Congress-ruled state, farmers have been unhappy too. Several instances of farmers receiving repayment notices came to light despite Congress’ claims to have waived-off farm loans.

The IE editorial says that the silver lining in this episode is Somaiya School principal Parveen Shaikh refusing to resign and asserting her “constitutional rights and sense of professional responsibility.” It is, however, usual practice of an average terror sympathiser to invoke constitutional rights, freedom of expression and whatnot when their contentious behaviour sparks public outrage.
