‘Atrocious…this is a homogenous society’: SC reprimands DMK-led TN govt for banning live telecast of Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha event

On Monday, January 22, the Supreme Court issued a notice to Tamil Nadu, saying that permission for the live telecast of the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony cannot be rejected. The apex court reprimanded the Tamil Nadu government saying that permission cannot be denied just because other communities live in a neighbourhood.

Terming the reason provided by the DMK government as “atrocious”, the apex court said during Monday’s hearing, “This is a homogenous society, do not prevent only on this ground (that there are other communities).” It sought a response on the matter from the state government and the DGP of the state.

“If the order on page 21 (of the petition) is to be made applicable across Tamil Nadu, wherever there are minorities, they will never be able to hold a prayer meeting… See the reason. Here the Hindus are in the minority, if they are permitted to hold this prior meeting that will cause problems in the society. Is this a reason?” asked Justice Dipankar Datta, who was part of a two-judge bench.

“You regulate it, you have the power. You have the power to pass orders regulating all these processions. But this reason is atrocious,” Justice Datta added.

The bench presided by Justice Sanjiv Khanna was hearing a pea which alleged that on January 20, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin had “issued oral orders/Directions to the Police Department not to permit any kind of Poojas, Archanas, Annadhanam, Live Telecast of Pran Prathishta, Bhajans and processions in the name of Lord Ram on the auspicious occasion of “Pran Prathista” of Lord Ram at Ayodhya, in all the Temples in the State of Tamil Nadu irrespective of whether it is a Private Temple controlled by the TN HRCE Department”.

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the bench that he received information that certain police stations had issued written directives. He also said that the highest constitutional court needed to send a message stating that what is happening is unacceptable.

The court was particularly offended by the response of the deputy superintendent of police of Dindigul Rural Sub Division to an application from the administrators of Sri Bhagavatiyamman Temple, asking for permission to perform special almsgiving (Annadanam) in reverence of the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha.

Among other things, the police note said, “The area of A Vellodu village, where you have requested permission to conduct the event, is predominantly inhabited by Christians. Additionally, there are areas with Christian temples. Due to the lower number of Hindu residents in this village, there is a possibility of encountering cultural sensitivities or legal complications related to public peace and morality when organizing events that are perceived as deviating from the prevailing religious practices”.

“Also, public peace is likely to be affected by the programme proposed to be conducted and law and order problems are likely to arise. Religious problems also are likely to arise, public property is likely to be damaged and the public is likely to be put to discomfort. Therefore, due to the above reasons, permission is denied for the program you want to conduct”.

Judge Khanna disapproved of this and added that law and order can be a reason to regulate, but what is stated in the order alone can’t be the reason. “We have made it very clear. We want to know the reason. If this is the reason going to be given, you will be in trouble,” Justice Khanna cautioned the Tamil Nadu counsel.

Notably, the Madras HC on Monday also ruled that no permission is needed from the state police or the state government for a live screening of Pran Pratishtha at private temples and halls. The High Court also said that it is open to the organisers to make arrangements for LIVE streaming of the inauguration ceremony.

On 22nd January, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman slammed the Tamil Nadu government for not allowing live telecast of Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha in temples. FM Sitharaman was scheduled to witness the ceremony live at a private temple in a small village in Tamil Nadu. However, the police personnel came in plain clothes and removed the LEDs.

FM Sitharaman voiced her concerns about the repression of religious festivities and the infringement of Hindus’ rights by the DMK-led state government.

Earlier, on 21st January, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) criticised the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government for prohibiting special poojas and food offerings in temples during the Ram Mandir Pran Prathistha.

Sony calls off $10-Billion merger deal with Zee, sends notice: Report

On 22nd January (Monday), Sony Group officially informed Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. of its decision to call off the merger with its India unit, as reported by Bloomberg.

As per the report, the Japanese entertainment giant sent a termination letter to Zee early on Monday. It is expected that it will disclose the same to the exchange later. Sony Group has claimed that the closing conditions for the deal have not been met and citing this reason, it called off the merger deal worth $ 10 billion. 

In a statement, Sony said, “The merger did not close by the end date as, among other things, the closing conditions to the merger were not satisfied by then. Sony Pictures Networks India Private (SPNI) has been engaged in discussions in good faith to extend the End Date but the Discussion Period has expired without an agreement upon an extension of the End Date. As a result, on January 22, 2024, SPNI issued a notice to ZEEL terminating the definitive agreements.”  

While the definitive agreements allowed both parties to extend the closing deal in good faith, it also provided that if the parties were unable to agree on an extension by the end of the discussion period, any party could terminate the definitive agreements by providing written notice.

Meanwhile, Sony refrained from commenting, and Zee did not respond immediately to Reuters’ request for a statement.

Earlier on Friday (19th January), Zee had stated that it was committed to the merger and was working to close the deal through “good faith negotiations”. In line with that, it sought to discuss an extension to a 20 January deadline to close the merger deal.

The agreement was seen as essential for the companies’ survival in an intensely competitive market, particularly in light of the upcoming merger between Disney’s Indian operations and the media assets of billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Industries.

Notably, Sony’s India unit and Zee Entertainment had announced a merger deal over two years ago. However, the merger deal faced challenges over the leadership dispute about who would lead the combined entity. The challenges were further aggravated when the financial regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) launched a probe into Zee chief executive officer Punit Goenka.

The impasse over leadership had effectively derailed the deal which had aimed to establish a $10 billion media powerhouse that would have been capable of competing with global giants like Netflix Inc. and Amazon.com Inc.

Sony issued the termination letter after the lapse of a 30-day grace period over the weekend. Throughout this duration, the two parties were unable to agree on a deadline set in late December. In June, the Mumbai-based media house was accused by SEBI of falsifying loan recovery to hide private financing deals orchestrated by its founder, Subhash Chandra. SEBI’s interim order alleged that Chandra and his son, Goenka, had “abused their position” and misappropriated funds.

Despite Goenka securing relief from an appellate authority against the SEBI order, preventing him from holding an executive or director position in a listed company, Sony continued to view the ongoing investigation as a persistent corporate governance issue.

Rahul Gandhi is leading his Bharat Nyay Yatra which began on 14th January from Manipur and is set to conclude on 20th March in Mumbai.

A video is going viral of the Congress MP staging a sit-in protest on Monday (22nd January) surrounded by Congress workers and 3 artists in traditional attire and singing in Assamese.

Another video shows the former Congress President arguing with the temple security. As he steps out of his car, he asks the security, “Brother issue kya hai? (what is the problem?),” to which the security directs him ahead.

“What is the issue brother? Can I go and see the barricades? What mistake I have done that I am not allowed inside the temple?” he says to the security.

He further says that he has taken permission and he has been invited by the temple.

However, on 21st January, the management of Batadrava Than in Assam had requested the Congress leader to reschedule his visit to the Shrine instead of visiting on the day of Ram Lalla Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma also slammed the Congress MP for planning to visit the shrine during the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony.

He urged Gandhi to consider the broader implications of his visit that coincided with the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony. However, it is clear how Rahul Gandhi chose to defy the repeated requests.

This is the second such outburst that Rahul Gandhi has had in less than 24 hours.

On 21st January, Rahul Gandhi could be seen losing his cool after a group of locals along with BJP leaders chanted Jai Shri Ram and Modi, Modi. The video of his outburst made headlines.

According to the BJP IT cell head, Rahul Gandhi lost his cool on hearing Jai Shri Ram and Modi slogans. Taking a dig at the Congress party, Malviya asked how would the party face people after it decided to reject the Ram Mandir invite.

However, the Congress cried victimhood claiming that Rahul Gandhi’s bus was attacked by BJP workers who were carrying sticks. In response, BJP shared the video to counter the charge.

While the Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha ceremony is underway at Ayodhya, Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam has credited PM Narendra Modi for the construction of the Ram Mandir. The leader praised PM Modi and said that if Hindus and the entire community are seeing this auspicious day today, it is because of the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “Ram Mandir wouldn’t have been possible without his leadership,” Acharya Pramod said.

In conversation with news agency ANI, Krishnam said, “The construction of the temple has been done due to the decision of the court… The Supreme Court gave the decision and the construction of the temple started at the birthplace of Lord Shri Ram and tomorrow it will be inaugurated. It is Pran Pratistha…If Modi had not been the Prime Minister of the country, this decision would not have been taken and this temple would not have been built…I want to give credit to Prime Minister Modi for the auspicious day of the construction of Ram temple and its Pran Pratistha.”

The leader meanwhile also acknowledged the struggle of Hindu groups like Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, Bajrang Dal, Saints, and Karsevaks who lost their lives during the Ram Janmabhoomi movement.

In response to opposition politicians declining an invitation to the consecration of Ram Mandir, Congress leader Acharya Pramod Krishnam stated that Lord Ram is the “soul of India” and that their decision not to attend the event was “unfortunate.”

“This is unfortunate. Not even a Christian or priest or Muslim can decline the invitation of Lord Ram. Ram is the soul of India. Without Ram, India can’t even be imagined,” Acharya Pramod said.

He added, “Declining the invitation means insulting the civilisation and culture of India. It means challenging the pride and existence of India…I would like to urge all Opposition parties, to fight the BJP but not Ram. Fight BJP but not Sanatana. Fight BJP but not India.”

Congress leaders Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, and other significant figures had publicly declared that they weren’t going to the Ram lalla consecration ceremony in Ayodhya. The party referred to the ceremony as a “RSS/BJP” function rather than a religious one.

Several other opposition figures, including Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Lalu Yadav and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar, also announced that they will not attend the ceremony. Former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav stated that he would visit Ram Mandir aftere the inauguration ceremony.

The Pran Pratishtha of Bhavya Ram Mandir in Ayodhya has been done at the hands of PM Narendra Modi. The grand idol of Shri Ram’s Baal Swarup (childhood form) is now the revered God of over a billion Hindus across the world.

Speaking to the media, sculptor Arun Yogiraj stated that he feels like the luckiest person on earth right now. He added that the blessings of his ancestors, family members, and Lord Ram Lalla have always been with him. Yogiraj’s idol of a five-year-old Ram Lalla was chosen to be the main Achal Murti of the Shri Ram Janmaboomi Temple.

The ideas behind the Achal Murti, Utsav Murti and the old idols of child Ram Lalla that was being worshipped till today in a makeshift shrine are explained here. The old idols will also be worshipped at the current sanctum sanctorum along with the new Murti.

Students of Allahabad University make 50 feet long and 30 feet wide rangoli of Ayodhya Ram Mandir and Ram Lalla, applies for Guinness World Records

A group of 40 students of the Allahabad University who were attempting to make the world’s largest rangoli of the Ram Mandir and Ram Lalla here will unveil it on Monday, January 22, on the auspicious day of the Ram Lalla Pran Pratishtha event is being held in the holy town of Ayodhya. The 40 students participating in the creation of the rangoli are affiliated with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

The record-breaking rangoli of Ram Lalla and the Ram Mandir is said to be 50 feet long and 30 feet wide. The artwork was displayed at 11:00 AM on Monday. An application has been sent to register it in the Guinness World Records as the largest rangoli, Uttar Pradesh ABVP media coordinator Abhinav Mishra told the media.

Meanwhile, a Guinness World Record was set at Maharashtra’s Chandrapur ahead of the Pran Pratishtha of Ram Mandir in Ayodhya when 33,258 ‘diyas’ (earthen lamps) were lit to write “Siyavar Ramchandra Ki Jai” in Hindi.

The Guinness World Record event took place on Saturday night (20th January) in Chandrapur’s Chanda Club grounds. During the function, Maharashtra Minister Mungantiwar was also present. On Sunday morning (21st January), Milind Werlekar and Prasad Kulkarni from Guinness World Records presented Mungantiwar with the document validating the record-setting achievement.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir in Ayodhya, as well as consecrate the Ram Lalla idol today on 22nd January. Over 7,000 people, including politicians, film stars, and business leaders, have arrived at Ayodhya to attend the inauguration ceremony.

The inauguration ceremony will take place from 11 AM to 1 PM, with PM Modi presiding over the Pran Pratishtha of the Ram Lalla Idol. The Pran Pratishta Ceremony will begin at 12:20 PM and end at 1 PM.

Surat: Diamond trader donates 101 KG gold to Bhavya Ram Mandir in Ayodhya

A diamond trader family from Surat has donated 101 KG of gold to Bhavya Ram Mandir in Ayodhya. Dilipkumar V Lakhi’s family runs one of the largest diamond factories in Surat. The family has donated gold that has been used for gilding of doors, Garbhgriha, Trishul, Damru and pillars of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir. It is the largest donation received by the temple trust to date.

A total of 15 golden gates have been installed on the ground floor of the temple, including the gate of Garbhgriha. The followers of Morari Bapu made the second-highest donation of Rs 16.3 crore. Furthermore, another diamond businessman, Govindbhai Dholakia from Surat, founder of Shree Ramkrishna Exports (SRK), donated Rs 11 crore.

Pran Pratishtha aims to invoke the divine presence within an idol, transforming the sculpture into a revered embodiment of a deity. This ceremony holds an integral part in Hindu worship as it signifies the actual presence of the deity in the idol, making it worthy of devotion and prayers.

Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha

The Ram Mandir Pran Pratishtha in Ayodhya is not just a religious event. It marks a new chapter in the history of Sanatan Dharma. The ceremony began on 16th January and encompassed a series of elaborate rituals full of Vedic traditions. The ceremony signifies various aspects of purification, devotion, and consecration. The proceedings also involved a procession through the city with the idol of Ram lalla, culminating in the ceremonious placement of the idol in the temple’s sanctum sanctorum.

Understanding Pran Pratishtha

In Sanatan Dharma, Pran Pratishtha holds paramount importance as it infuses life force or Pran into an idol. It marks the transformation of an idol from an artefact to a living embodiment of the deity (‘Pratishtha’). The idol, thus transformed into Bhagwan, can receive prayers and devotion from the devotees. The ritual signifies that the deity’s presence within the idol is eternal, transforming the temple into a space of divine communion.

The rituals of Pran Pratishtha

Pran Pratishtha starts with Shobha Yatra, a procession of the idol, which marks the beginning of its transformation into a deity. Rituals at the mandap are conducted to awaken the idol and ensure its readiness to transfer its divine essence to a new form if necessary.

In the “adivas” ritual, the idol is immersed in water and grain. It is believed that it heals any damage from crafting and identifies material defects. After this ritual, a bath or “Abhishek” is performed to cleanse the idol with sacred substances, including water, fragrant flower essence and others. One crucial part of the ceremony is the ritual of opening the eyes of the deity, where kohl is applied around the eyes using a gold needle. This step is carried out from behind the idol to avoid the overwhelming power of direct gaze into the divine eyes​.

Notably, Pran Pratishtha is different from Pratishtha. In the latter, regular pujas and rituals are required to maintain the presence of the Bhagwan in the idol. However, Pran Pratishtha permanently installs the life force within the idol, thus eliminating the need for constant maintenance.

Detailed process of Pran Pratishtha

There are several steps involved in the Pran Pratishtha ceremony, as follows:

Karmakutir

It is the process of purification of the idol from the place of the artisan who made it. It involves removing any negative influences and closing the idol’s eyes with honey and ghee along with specific mantras.

Jaladhivas

This process ensures the completeness and checks for the idol’s potential damages by immersing it in water. Panchamrut (a mixture of five elements) is added to the idol vessel.

Dhanyadhivas

This process involves the purification of the idols using grains, also known as Dhanya.

Ghrutadhivas

The next step of purification is submerging the idol in cow ghee.

Snapan or Abhishek

In this process, bathing of ifol takes place with substances like milk and water.

Netra Anvaran

In this process, a mirror and golden needle are used to remove ghee from the eyes of the idol delicately.

Shodshopchar Puja

This process involves placing the idol in the final position within the inner sanctum, invoking the Nidra Devi, the Goddess of Sleep, and performing overnight Yagya away from the idol.

The above-mentioned steps are the preparatory ones, after which the actual Pran Pratishtha begins. It involves Nayasa, where the Pujari systematically invokes and transfers the life force to different parts of the idol, infusing the idol with Pran (life breath), Jiva (Soul) and the ten Indriyas (senses). After Pran Pratishtha, the idol is then purified with scented water and flowers. Netra Anvaran is performed to open the eyes of the idol, symbolising the awakened state of Bhagwan.

These steps of Pran Pratishtha transform the idol from an inanimate object to a living embodiment of the deity. It is capable of interacting with the devotees and responding to the prayers. The idol, thus, becomes a sacred entity, bridging the human-divine relationship and laying the foundation for Hindu devotional practices centred around the ceremonial worship of Bhagwan in the earthly forms.

The Significance of covering the Idol’s face

One of the most intriguing aspects of Pran Pratishtha is the tradition of covering the eyes of the idol until the completion of the ceremony. It underscores the belief that until the Pran Pratishtha is performed, the idol is not yet the deity itself but only a representation. Covering the face is done to separate the idol’s material form from its spiritual essence and to maintain its purity and sanctity until the ritual infuses it with the divine life. It highlights the reverence and sanctity accorded to the idols in Hindu worship and ensures that they are treated with utmost respect and devotion.

In Nepal’s Janakpur Dham Temple, 1 Lakh 25,000 clay Diyas will be lit today to celebrate Shri Ram’s Pran Pratishtha in his Janmabhoomi.

The Janaki Temple in Janakpur Dham was lit up to celebrate the grand occasion.

Janakpur is the birthplace of Sita. Located in the Dhanusha district in the Terai region in Nepal, this town boasts of numerous temples, monasteries, and artistic centers. It used to be the capital of the ancient Mithila kingdom, where Sita’s father, Janak was once king. This town houses Nepal’s biggest temple, the Janki temple, built for its Princess Sita who married Lord Ram at this very town.

Every corner, every square of Janakpur Dham is dedicated to Sita and Ram. The town celebrates its beloved princess to date and every year on Vivah Panchami celebrates her wedding with all pomp and glory.

In May 2018, PM Modi visited Janaki Temple in Janakpur Dham along with the then Nepal PM KP Oli. PM Modi had inaugurated the Janakpur Ayodhya bus service.

It is notable here that a grand contingent of devotees has arrived from Nepal, especially from Janakpur, carrying thousands of gifts for Shri Ram ahead of the Pran Pratishtha. Ram is the beloved God of Nepali Hindus who also call him their son-in-law. The devotees had arrived carrying thousands of traditional wedding gifts for Shri Ram and Maa Sita. Talking to Indian media, the devotees had stated that they are happy that finally Shri Ram has got a grand Temple and they have brought gifts for their sister’s new home.

The Janaki Temple is also organizing special Pujas and dedicated rituals to celebrate the grand Pratishtha of the Bhavya Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.
