‘Cannot apply America to Earth’: Twitter Chairman Elon Musk says Twitter has to obey local govt laws, responding to rant by Jack Dorsey against India

On June 20 (local time), Twitter Chairman and CTO Elon Musk said that Twitter has to obey the local government laws; otherwise, the company’s employees have to face the consequences. He was answering a question regarding what Twitter founder and former CEO Jack Dorsey said about India in a recent interview that Twitter locked a lot of handles at the government’s request.

Replying to India Today’s Foreign Affairs Editor Geeta Mohan’s question Musk said, “Twitter does not have a choice but to obey local governments. If we don’t obey local government laws, we will get shut down. So the best we can do is to work close to the law in any given country. It is impossible for us to do more than that, or we will be blocked, and our people will be arrested. We cannot just apply America to Earth. There are different rules and regulations of different governments. We will do our best to provide the freest speech that is possible under the law.”

Musk’s statement came after meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on his official state visit to the US. Following the meeting, Musk said he was a fan of him and was honoured to meet him. Furthermore, Musk added that PM Modi really wants to do the right thing for India. “He wants to be open, he wants to be supportive of new companies, obviously, but at the same time, make sure it accrues to India’s advantage, which is obviously that’s the job I’m saying. I am a fan of Modi,” said Musk.

Jack Dorsey claimed India threatened Twitter

On June 12 (local time), former CEO of Twitter Jack Dorsey accused the Indian government of threatening Twitter with legal consequences during farmer protests. In an exclusive interview on Breaking Point, that the Indian government threatened to shut down Twitter if it did not take action against “particular journalists” and accounts “critical of the government” during the farmer’s protest.

He said, “India is a country that had many requests of us around the farmer’s protest around particular journalists that were critical of the government. It manifested in ways such as ‘we will shut Twitter down in India’, which is a very large market for us. ‘We will raid the homes of your employees’, which they did. ‘We will shut down your offices if you don’t follow suit’, and this is India, a democratic country.”

While Jack Dorsey claimed that they were threatened with raids and a shutdown, Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar issued a clarification citing how Twitter under Jack Dorsey was blatantly violating Indian laws and disregarding India’s sovereignty. He further said that Jack Dorsey was blatantly partisan, de-platforming and de-amplifying voices it did not agree with politically.

Confident that Tesla will be in India as soon as humanly possible: Elon Musk to visit India soon, thanks PM Modi for his support. Here is what he said

Tesla Chief Executive Elon Musk on Tuesday said that he is planning to visit India next year adding that he is confident that the electric carmaker will be in India and will do so “as soon as humanly possible.”

His comments to reporters were made outside the Lotte New York Palace, following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived on a historic four-day State visit to the US on Tuesday. Meanwhile, PM Modi tweeted after his meeting with Musk, “Great meeting you today @elonmusk! We had multifaceted conversations on issues ranging from energy to spirituality.”

Musk said that PM Modi has invited him to India and that he is planning to come to India next year.

He said, “I am planning to visit India next year. I am confident that Tesla will be in India and we will do so as soon as humanly possible.”

“I would like to thank PM Modi for his support and hopefully, we will be able to announce something in the future,” Musk said.

Calling himself a fan of PM Modi, Musk also noted that the prime minister visited a Tesla factory in California many years ago. The Prime Minister had previously met with Musk in 2015 during a visit to Tesla Motors factory in Freemont, California. “….he really cares about India. He is pushing us to make significant investments in India which is something we intend to do,” Musk said about his meeting with PM Modi.

The Tesla CEO said that he had an “excellent conversation” with PM Modi and that quite likely there will be a significant investment in India.

Speaking on PM Modi’s leadership role in making technology inclusive so that digital infrastructure can be created, he said, “I can say he (Modi) really wants to do the right things for India. He wants to be open, supportive of new companies and at the same time ensures that it accrues to India’s advantage which is..which is obviously that’s the job I’m saying. I am a fan of Modi,” Musk told ANI.

“India has potential for all three pillars of a sustainable energy future, the three pillars being sustainable energy generation through solar and wind primarily, the amount of area you actually need to generate electricity…it is very doable…,” Musk said.

“We are also looking to bring Starlink to India which could be incredibly helpful for rural areas,” he said.

“The Starlink Internet, which I think can be incredibly helpful for sort of remote or rural villages where they perhaps either may have no access to the Internet or the Internet is very expensive and slow,” Musk said.

The Tesla CEO, who also owns Twitter said that the social media giant does not have a choice but to obey local governments or else it will get shut down.

He made the above remarks in response to the company’s former owner and CEO Jack Dorsey’s recent allegation against the Government of India.

“Twitter does not have a choice but to obey local governments. If we don’t obey local government laws, we will get shut down so the best we can do is to work close to the law in any given country, it is impossible for us to do more than that. We will do our best to provide free speech that is possible under the law,” Musk told the reporters.

In response to PM Modi’s tweet regarding his meeting with business leaders in the US, Musk tweeted, “It was an honour to meet again.”

“In the USA, I will also get the opportunity to meet business leaders, interact with the Indian community and meet thought leaders from different walks of life. We seek to deepen India-USA ties in key sectors like trade, commerce, innovation, technology and other such areas,” tweeted PM Modi.

“Well, I’m actually incredibly excited about the future of India. I think India has more promise than any large country in the world,” Musk told ANI.

Earlier, during an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Musk was asked if the automaker was interested in the Indian market. “Absolutely,” he replied.

He added that Tesla will likely finalise a location to set up its India factory by the end of this year.

Notably, his meeting comes days after former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey alleged that the BJP-led central government threatened to shut down Twitter in India and have its employees raided at the height of the farmers’ protest in 2020.

‘I am a fan of Modi’, ‘India has more promise than any large country’ and more: Watch what Twitter and Tesla boss Elon Musk said after meeting PM Modi

Tesla CEO and Twitter owner Elon Musk on Tuesday (local time) met Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a four-day State visit to the US and said that he is a fan of him and was honoured to meet him.

Speaking on PM Modi’s leadership role in making technology inclusive so that digital infrastructure can be created, he said, “I can say he really wants to do the right thing for India. He wants to be open, he wants to be supportive of new companies, obviously, but at the same time, make sure it accrues to India’s advantage, which is obviously that’s the job I’m saying. I am a fan of Modi,” to ANI.

He also divulged plans to visit India anytime soon. On being questioned over did PM Modi extended an invitation to him, he said, “He did. And yes, I’m tentatively planning to visit India again next year. I’m looking forward.”

Notably, this is the first meeting between PM Modi and Musk after he became the owner of Twitter. PM Modi earlier met Musk in 2015 during a visit to Tesla Motors factory in California.

“Well, I’m actually incredibly excited about the future of India. I think India has more promise than any large country in the world,” told Musk to ANI.

Speaking about the takeaways from the meeting, Musk said that PM Modi really cares about India because he is pushing them to make significant investments in India, which is something that they intend to do and are just trying to figure out the right timing.

Earlier, during an interview with The Wall Street Journal, Musk was asked if the automaker was interested in the Indian market. “Absolutely,” he replied. He added that Tesla will likely finalise a location to set up its India factory by the end of this year.

“It was a fantastic meeting with the Prime Minister and I like him quite a lot. He visited our Tesla Fremont Factory several years ago, and so we’ve now known each other for a while, said Musk after meeting PM Modi today.

Speaking about future plans and investment in India, he said, “Yeah, well, I think there’s a tremendous amount of potential for all three pillars of the sustainable energy future. The three pillars are sustainable energy generation through solar and wind, primarily. And obviously, India is great for solar. And the amount of land area you actually need to generate enough electricity to power India is very small. I believe it’d be probably one or 2 per cent of the land area of India. So it’s very doable. And then you need to pair that with stationary battery packs because the sun doesn’t shine at night. And then you need electric vehicles, and then you have a sustainable energy future. And I think the interesting thing people will find is that this is a lower cost way to go as well.”

Musk also said that he is looking forward to bringing Starlink to India as well.

“The Starlink Internet, which I think can be incredibly helpful for sort of remote or rural villages where they perhaps either may have no access to the Internet or the Internet is very expensive and slow,” he said.

Notably, his meeting comes days after former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey alleged that the BJP-led central government threatened to shut down Twitter in India and have its employees raided at the height of the farmers’ protest in 2020.

PM Modi will be meeting over two dozen thought leaders from various fields after he lands in New York today.

These leaders comprise Nobel laureates, economists, artists, scientists, scholars, entrepreneurs, academics and experts from the health sector.

Doxxing, street harassment, and assault: Islamists continue attacks on Hindu-Muslim couples in the name of ‘Bhagwa love trap’

For several months now, Islamists have been attacking random Hindu-Muslim couples on the streets across different cities in India. All of this is being done under the pretext of combating ‘Bhagwa love trap.’

A conspiracy theory peddled by radical Islamic scholars such as Sajjad Nomani, ‘Bhagwa Love Trap’ suggests that a sinister plot is somehow underway to convert Muslim women to Hinduism.

As a result, Islamist lynch mobs are roughing up Hindu men and molesting their female Muslim friends and partners in the name of ‘saving Islam’ and ‘protecting Muslim women.’

In one case, one such fanatic was seen stopping a burqa-clad woman and coercing her into calling her family members. “You people are tarnishing the name of Islam. You should be ashamed…Let me talk to your parents,” he remarked while acknowledging that he has unlawfully video-tapped her several times.

In another video, a few rabid Islamists were seen verbally abusing two burqa-clad women for travelling on a bike with a Hindu man. “How can their mother allow them to travel with a Hindu guy…” they remarked while labelling the women ‘prostitutes.’

In one case from Gujarat, Islamists gheraoed a Muslim woman for accompanying a Hindu man and forcibly removed her headscarf. She was interrogated, humiliated and shamed publicly for supposedly bringing a ‘bad name’ to Islam. A similar case was also reported from Maharashtra.

Screengrab of the Instagram post

A video allegedly from Chikkaballapur in Karnataka has come to light wherein a man in a skullcap is seen randomly harassing a Hindu-Muslim couple. Despite being told that the victim is with a friend, the extremist refuses to let her go. He is joined by other radical co-religionists who then continue to heckle them.

In a case allegedly from Gujarat, Islamists are seen harassing a Muslim woman for accompanying a Hindu man on a bike. They verbally abuse her with the choicest of expletives for not finding a Muslim partner and engaging in inter-faith relationships.

A similar case of assault and harassment against a Hindu-Muslim couple was also reported from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.

Extremists assault Hindu-Muslim couples in Moradabad, Meerut

In the Bilari town of Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, Islamists targeted a burqa-wearing Muslim woman for roaming with her Hindu husband. The incident reportedly took place on May 22, 2023.

The Muslim mob first misbehaved with the woman and then attacked her husband. Following the incident, the victim lodged a complaint with the police and a First Information Report (FIR) was registered.

She was in a tailor’s shop when she was surrounded by her co-religionists and asked, “What are you doing being a Muslim with a man of another religion?”

Earlier, a video of a group of Islamists, led by an alleged AIMIM leader, harassing a Muslim girl for roaming with a Hindu boy went viral on social media.

Islamists attack Hindu man for dining with Muslim woman in MP

The Madhya Pradesh police have arrested 6 Islamists, who assaulted a Hindu man named Bhavesh Sunhare. The victim was attacked while returning from a dinner with a Muslim woman identified as Nasreen Sultana.

The incident took place on May 25, 2023. As per reports, the duo was stopped by a group of 20-30 Islamist men while returning from a restaurant.

In a statement, Additional DCP Rajesh Singh Raghuwanshi said, “The woman argued that she had her parents’ permission. The accused beat up her friend. Some bystanders tried to intervene to protect the man, but they were attacked with knives.”

Conclusion

Doxxing and dog-whistling against Hindu-Muslim couples on social media by Islamists are now translating into real-life threats. Recently, a Muslim girl from Pakistan was abused online for dating a Hindu Nepali boy.

In May alone, Opindia compiled 40 cases of such attacks on Hindu men and Muslim women orchestrated by the latter’s radical co-religionists. The targeted attacks have not ceased and many more cases have come to light since Opindia’s last report.

Submersible taking tourists to see the Titanic wreck goes missing in the Atlantic Ocean, rescue operations expanded into deeper waters

A search operation is currently underway in the Atlantic Ocean as a tourist submersible, that is used to take people to see the Titanic wreck, has been reported missing.

Reportedly, OceanGate Expeditions, a company specialising in deep-sea expeditions using submersibles, confirmed the disappearance of one of its submersibles.

The company said that it had received help from several government agencies and exploring all options to bring the crew back safely.

The submersible named Titan has a maximum capacity of five people on board – a pilot and four guests. Reportedly, the tourists onboard the submersible have been identified as businessman Shahzada Dawood, his son Suleman, renowned explorer Hamish Harding and French explorer Paul-Henry Nargeolet.

Billionaire Harding runs an aviation company, and businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son are among the British citizens onboard.

Hamish Harding is a renowned explorer who has flown to space and holds three Guinness World Records. His aircraft firm Action Aviation released a statement on behalf of the chairman’s family.

The statement said, “Both the Harding family and the team at Action Aviation are very grateful for all the kind messages of concern and support from our friends and colleagues. The team at Action Aviation is extremely proud of Hamish and we look forward to welcoming him home.”

The company of businessman Shahzada Dawood has said they are praying for the “swift and safe return” of him and his son Suleman.

French explorer Paul-Henry Nargeolet is a former diver for the French Navy. He was part of the first expedition to visit the wreck in 1987, just two years after it was found. He has earned the moniker ‘Mr. Titanic’ as he has reportedly spent more time at the wreck than any other explorer.

The family members of all of the tourists have asked for privacy.

A brief timeline of the submersible route and rescue operations

As per BBC, the ship carrying the submersible set off from St John’s, Newfoundland on Saturday, 17th of June. The research vessel, the Polar Prince tugboat, (mothership) arrived near the location of the Titanic wreck on Sunday morning, the 18th of June.

As per the Facebook post of Hamish Harding, the dive started at about 04:00 EST. The vessel maintained contact for one hour and 45 minutes into the dive after which the Polar Prince lost contact with the crew of the Titan submersible.

Eight hours is considered the usual time for one of these dives, but Titan failed to resurface in the stipulated time frame.

On Monday, the 19th of June, the US Coastguard confirmed there were five people on board the missing sub and that the sub went missing more than 24 hours ago. In a news conference, the US Coast Guard’s Rear Adm John Mauger predicted there were between 70 and 96 hours of oxygen.

Speaking to BBC, Oceans expert Dr. Simon Boxall said, “It’s an enormous challenge, one we’ve never had to tackle before. There have been tragic cases of military submarines sitting on the seafloor where they have a lot more resources and a lot more oxygen available, but in this case, time is very short and the next few days will be critical.”

Later today, the search was expanded to deeper waters. As per recent information, the Boston Coastguard has now become the centre of a search operation.

The search area is extremely remote – 900 miles from the US east coast and about 430 miles off Newfoundland in Canada.

The technicalities explained

It is important to note that submersibles are different from submarines. A submersible needs a mother ship that can launch it and recover it. Contrary to it, a submarine has enough power to leave port and come back to port on its own.

As per Sky News report, the vessel keeps sending a message every 15 minutes to assure those ashore that it is safe. But in this case, the vessel has not responded for more than seven hours and counting, unfortunately.

Sky News report claimed that it has located the Polar Prince tugboat and it is around 700m away from the Titanic wreck site. Notably, the tugboat is used to transport submersibles.

Tourist attraction of the Titanic wreck

Tourists spend thousands of dollars to be taken to the wreckage of the liner – 12,500ft underwater. It is claimed that OceanGate Expeditions charges $250,000 (£195,270) for a place on its eight-day expedition.

On the tragic day of 15th of April, 1912, the Titanic struck an iceberg and sank into the Atlantic. The fateful accident took place during its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York. 1,500 people lost their life in this tragic accident.

37 years ago, the wreckage of the Titanic was discovered in the Atlantic, around 400 nautical miles from Newfoundland, Canada.

Recently, the experts created the first-ever full-sized digital replica of the Titanic. It is claimed that the replica can help unlock the secrets of the world’s most famous shipwreck.

Tamil Nadu Pastor sexually harassed a minor for five years, arrested under POCSO Act

On Tuesday, June 20, a Pentecostal pastor identified as Vinod Joshua (40) has been arrested from the MGR Integrated Bus Stand in Madurai while he was allegedly trying to flee. Reportedly, he was arrested under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.

As per media reports, Joshua had been sexually abusing the pregnant woman since she was 15 years of age and continued his sexual abuse even after her marriage. The victim got married last year and is reportedly 8 months pregnant now.

Media reports highlight that the pastor had been sexually harassing her since 2018 when she was a minor. The prolonged case of sexual harassment case came to light when the pastor continued to harass the victim after her marriage.

Subsequently, she lodged a complaint with the women police. The pastor was booked under the POCSO Act which led to Joshua’s arrest from the MGR bus stand in Madurai. Joshua is said to be a native of Vellore. He served as a pastor at the Blessings of Brotherhood church in Keezhakottai, Thoothukudi.

As per the girl’s complaint, the victim was raped by the pastor when she was a minor. Apparently, both the victim and pastor Joshua belong to the same Keezhakottai village. The victim regularly used to attend church for choir practice. In 2018, when she was just 15 years of age, she was raped by pastor Joshua and the abuse continued for five years.

Furthermore, the girl is said to have been forced to have sex several times. Pastor Joshua had threatened the victim that he would kill her along with the family if she told anyone about her ordeal.

Last year Joshua was transferred to Vellore and now was serving at a church there. During the same period, the victim got married and is now around 8 months pregnant.

Reportedly, Pastor Joshua made contact with her again and would sexually harass her through WhatsApp video calls. Unable to bear the ordeal any further, the victim went on to file a complaint with the Kadampur All Women Police Station.

As the victim was sexually abused since she was a minor, Joshua was booked under the POCSO Act. On learning about the Police complaint, pastor Joshua tried to flee the area but was apprehended by the Police.

During the investigation, Joshua reportedly confessed to his crimes and was remanded in judicial custody. Police said Vinoth Joshua from Vellore was working as a pastor in Aseervadha Sagodhara Sabhai Pentecostal Church in Keezhakottai village.

Allahabad HC refuses relief to man who posted objectionable picture of Lord Hanuman on social media

The Allahabad High Court recently refused to hold up all of the hearings in a lawsuit brought about around a social media post that featured an offensive image of Lord Hanuman including an offensive caption.

The FIR’s alarming claim and the very unpleasant nature of the post in question were both mentioned by Justice Prashant Kumar’s panel. The charge sheet and summons order, as well as the entire case process, were all challenged in an application made under Section 482 CrPC, and the court issued the ruling.

The accused, Rajesh Kumar, has been charged for posting a social media message with extremely derogatory language about Lord Hanuman that could upset harmonious relations between groups.

At Milak Police Station in the Uttar Pradesh district of Rampur, the case was reported under Sections 505(2)/295 (A) of the Indian Penal Code and 67 of the Information Technology Act. The lower court had determined that there was a solid case against the defendant at first glance.

The high court cited the case of the State of Haryana and others vs. Bhajan Lal and others (1992), in which the supreme court established rules for how the inherent authority granted to the high court under Section 482 CrPC should be used.

Court noted, “It is well settled that at the stage of taking cognisance, the Court should not get in the merits of the case, at such stage, the Court’s power is limited to the extent on finding out whether, from the material placed before it, the offences alleged thereunder against the accused is made out or not with a view to proceed further with the case”.

The high court declined to consider the application at hand and dismissed it after determining that the current case did not fall under the standards established by the Supreme Court.

Case registered against man for trying to illegally occupy Sourav Ganguly’s land in West Bengal; security guard at property beaten

Some individuals attempted to illegally occupy the land of the former captain of the Indian cricket team Sourav Ganguly in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas on Monday, June 19.

A complaint on behalf of Tania Bhattacharya, the latter’s personal assistant, has been lodged with the police in which it has been informed that some people tried to occupy the land by breaking the lock.

She charged that Supriyo Bhowmik, along with some accomplices, recently made an effort to intrude on and occupy property that was registered in the name of Sourav Ganguly’s cricket academy in a neighbourhood that was under the jurisdiction of Maheshtala Police Station. The guard stationed there was also abused and beaten when he tried to stop them. She added that the accused also harassed her over the phone.

The complaint mentioned that the miscreants engaged in illicit conduct in addition to making multiple attempts to capture the land during the past several days. “We have received a complaint. The person was summoned to the police station. We will take steps after interrogation,” noted Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nirupam Ghosh.

The perpetrator was questioned after being called to the Maheshtala Police Station. According to police sources, he has refuted the allegation and made a counter-claim that the security guard was the one who set him up for speaking out against their immoral activities.

‘Hindus for Human Rights’ proudly flaunts its anti-Modi toolkit, urges followers to rally against PM Modi during his state visit to the US

The dubious organisation ‘Hindus for Human Rights’ has come up with a “special toolkit” to propagate against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is on a State Visit to the US. The toolkit released by the organisation is part of its anti-Modi campaign.

Source: HfHR

Titled “Modi Protest Toolkit”, the 24-page document is freely and openly available on HfHR’s website. The organisation is strangely flaunting a propaganda document.

Source: HfHR website

OpIndia checked the document to understand HfHR’s plan. It started with the information about the state visit on June 22. HfHR accused PM Modi of “centralising power around himself”. They urged the followers to protest “safely” and said, “With the potential protests in DC and New York City, it is important to exercise our first amendment rights, and do so safely. Here is a protest toolkit for all your protest needs.”

The toolkit urged the protesters to be aware of the cause or issue and come prepared. It could be because, in many such protests, people totally unaware of the reason behind the protest end up in front of the camera. The issues being raised by HfHR and other organisations do not hold any substance on the ground.

Source: HfHR

Interestingly, in the guidelines, the document suggested switching off biometric features on the devices to “protect privacy”. They also urged not to share identifying information with fellow protesters.

Source: HfHR

The actual part of the toolkit came after the basic guidelines and other information. It contained Tweet formats to target both President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Some of the examples listed in the document were –

  1. “Dear @POTUS, as you meet with PM Modi, we urge you to prioritize human rights and democracy. Stand up for the people of India and ensure accountability for any authoritarian actions. #BidenHoldModiAccountable#HumanRightsMatter”
  2. “As President Biden meets PM Modi, we must not forget the importance of holding leaders accountable. Democracy is under threat, and it’s time to speak up. We demand transparency, justice, and respect for human rights.#AccountabilityNow #IndiaVisit”
  3. “The erosion of democracy is alarming. It’s time to speak up against authoritarianism in India. We stand against any restrictions on free speech, press freedom, and minority rights.#DefendDemocracy #ModiAuthoritarianism”
  4. “As citizens, we have the right to question those in power. We demand transparency, accountability, and respect for human rights in India. Let’s unite to protect our democratic values.#IndiaAgainstAuthoritarianism #StandAgainstModi”

Hashtags used in tweets directed to President Biden were #BidenHoldModiAccountable, #HumanRightsMatter, #AccountabilityNow, #IndiaVisit, #DefendDemocracy, #ModiAccountability, #BidenSpeakUp, and #HoldModiAccountable.

Hashtags used in tweets directed to PM Modi were #DefendDemocracy, #ModiAuthoritarianism, #IndiaAgainstAuthoritarianism, #StandAgainstModi, #ProtectDemocracy, #NoToAuthoritarianism, #StandUpForDemocracy, #ModiAuthoritarianMoves and #IndiaDeservesBetter.

Furthermore, there were chants suggested that the protesters could raise that included, “India, India, democracy’s pride, United we stand, side by side!”, “Democracy in India, strong and true, Our voices matter, for me and you!”, “In India’s land, democracy rings; together, we fight for the freedom it brings!”, “India’s heart beats with democracy’s fire, We won’t stop, our voices won’t tire!”, and “India’s power, democracy’s might, We march together, for what’s right!”.

The document also provided posters. Some of the examples are as follows.

About Hindus for Human Rights

Rahul Gandhi was recently on a 10-day USA tour, where he spoke at the National Press Club, Stanford University, and also, with ‘think tanks’, allegedly discussing relations between India and USA. The Hudson Institute tweeted images of Rahul Gandhi in deep conversation with these “think tanks”. Sunita Vishwanath, co-founder of ‘Hindus for Human Rights’ was seated alongside Rahul Gandhi at this event at Hudson Institute.

The organisation has been preparing grounds to oppose PM Modi’s visit for a while. In a June 5 tweet, they said, “Extremely disappointed to see Sen Schumer Speaker McCarthy invite Modi to a Joint Meeting of Congress. The friendship between the US and India has long been bound by shared values of secular democracy and freedom. In India, those values are dissolving before our very eyes.”

Investigating Info-warfare and Psy-war OSINT Disinfo Lab had conducted an investigation revealing that the ‘Hindus for Human Rights (HfHR)’ had been promoting the misleading narrative of ‘Hindu Vs Hindutva’. The same organisation was also seen endorsing the ‘Dismantling Global Hindutva’ event.

As per Disinfo Lab, HfHR was formed in the year 2019 by two Islamist advocacy groups named Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) and the Organization for Minorities of India (OFMI). Interestingly, the three organisations had formed another outfit called the Alliance for Justice and Accountability (AJA).

As per an article in The Hindu, the Alliance for Justice and Accountability had been at the forefront of leading demonstrations against the visit of PM Modi to Houston on September 22, 2019.

According to Disinfo Lab, the co-founder of Hindus for Human Rights, Sunita Vishwanath, also runs an organisation named ‘Women for Afghan Women’, which is funded by the Soros Open Society Foundation. Earlier, OpIndia reported in detail how George Soros had been fuelling a dangerous anti-India narrative through media and ‘civil society.’

Interestingly, Sunita Vishwanath, who was pictured alongside Rahul Gandhi, had tried to create hysteria and panic among Indian Muslims about the National Register of Citizens (NRC). “We are especially appalled by the most recent nightmare of the Kashmiri people, and the situation of 1.9 million people in India who are rendered stateless due to the imposition of the travesty called the National Register of Citizens”, she had said. It is pertinent to note that even during this USA trip, Rahul Gandhi endorsed dangerous lies and propaganda against CAA and NRC, which led to anti-Hindu riots in 2020 in India.

Interestingly, Sunita Vishwanath, the co-founder of HfHR, is also closely connected to George Soros and Islamists-linked IAMC. The in-depth analysis of the web can be read here.

We do not support Taiwan independence: US Secy of State Antony Blinken says during China visit as America maintains its strategic ambiguity policy

During his visit to China, United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Monday said, “We do not support Taiwan independence. We remain opposed to any unilateral changes to the status quo by either side. We continue to expect the peaceful resolution of cross-state differences.”

With this statement, ambiguity over America’s Taiwan policy continues to persist hinting that the “One China” principle continues to have an upper hand in the global context.

However, Blinken raised U.S concerns about “the PRC’s provocative actions in the Taiwan Strait, as well as in the South and East China Seas.”

He further said, “On Taiwan, I reiterated the longstanding U.S. ‘one China’ policy. That policy has not changed. It’s guided by the Taiwan Relations Act, the three Joint Communiqués, the Six Assurances. We do not support Taiwan independence.”

“We remain opposed to any unilateral changes to the status quo by either side. We continue to expect the peaceful resolution of cross-strait differences. We remain committed to meeting our responsibilities under the Taiwan Relations Act, including making sure that Taiwan has the ability to defend itself”, he further said.

Blinken made the statement at the US embassy in Beijing during his two-day visit. Both countries agreed to ‘stabilise ties’ following a lengthy spell of tensions over a slew of issues. However, the visit failed to yield a significant breakthrough.

What is the US policy on the China-Taiwan situation?

US, China, and Taiwan relations are hanging by a thread that can snap even over the most trivial issues; especially taking into account China’s unpredictable aggression.

The bedrock on which this relation is surviving is the “One China policy” of the United States running parallel to the “One China principle” of the People’s Republic of China (PRC).

Under the “One China principle”, the People’s Republic of China holds the position that there is only one sovereign state of China that is the PRC, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China. This is to strike down Taiwan’s identification as the Republic of China (ROC).

Meanwhile the United States’ “One China policy” recognises the PRC as the “sole legal govt of China” and merely acknowledges Taiwan sans its consideration as a separate sovereign entity; recognises and acknowledges being the operative words.

Under this policy, the US does not recognise Chinese sovereignty over Taiwan while also not recognising Taiwan as a sovereign state. It does however “acknowledge” Taiwan as “part” of China.

The Taiwan Relations Act, 1979

The Taiwan Relations Act, of 1979, was introduced in a bid to protect America’s security and commercial interests in Taiwan. It provides the framework for unofficial relations in the absence of diplomatic ties.

The everyday operations between the US and Taiwan are conducted through the American Institution in Taiwan (AIT) and its counterpart, the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office (TECRO).

The Act also provides defense and security protection to Taiwan and to US interests in Taiwan. It mandates the US to provide defensive arms to Taiwan and “maintain the capacity to resist any resort to force that would jeopardise the security of the people of Taiwan.”

The Six Assurances

The assurances resulted from the U.S-China communique signed on 17 August 1982, in which America stated that “it does not seek to carry out a long-term policy of arms sales to Taiwan”; “that its arms sales to Taiwan will not exceed, either in qualitative or in quantitative terms, the level of those supplied in recent years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between the United States and China”; and “that it intends to reduce gradually its sales of arms to Taiwan, leading over a period of time to a final resolution.”

The assurances by the U.S are as follows:

  1. US had not agreed to set a date for ending arms sales to the Republic of China.
  2. US had not agreed to hold prior consultations with the PRC regarding arms sales to the Republic of China.
  3. US would not play a mediation role between the PRC and the Republic of China.
  4. US would not revise the Taiwan Relations Act.
  5. US had not altered its position regarding sovereignty over Taiwan.
  6. US would not exert pressure on the Republic of China to enter into negotiations with the PRC.

So has the Biden administration broken protocol on the Taiwan issue in the past?

Biden and his administration’s seemingly absolute tone on Taiwan has angered China on several occasions. This has put US diplomats in a difficult position as Biden’s statements (on Taiwan) have often been viewed by experts as breaching the long-held US policy of “strategic ambiguity”.

On 23 May 2022, US President Joe Biden said that the US would intervene militarily if China uses force against Taiwan. His statement came amid growing US-China tensions over Taiwan at the time.

Another controversy erupted in August last year which posed a potential risk to US and China relations and in turn to Taiwan. Reports of the then US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan vexed Beijing. What raised eyebrows however was Biden’s statement on the same.

“The military thinks it’s not a good idea right now,” he said. To this Pelosi replied, “I think what the President was saying is that maybe the military was afraid of my plane getting shot down or something like that. I don’t know exactly.”

Again in September 2022, when the 80-year-old US President was asked by the media “whether the US forces would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion.” He replied with a “yes”.

In July 2022, amid growing tensions between US and China over the Taiwan issue, Biden in a telephonic conversation with Chinese Premier Xi Jinping underscored that “the United States policy has not changed and that the United States strongly opposes unilateral efforts to change the status quo or undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.”

What is the US policy of strategic ambiguity?

The long-standing US policy of “strategic ambiguity” has been formulated to prevent giving away information on the extent of its support to Taiwan. According to political scientist Raymond Kuo, the idea is to “keep all parties guessing whether, and to what extent, the U.S. military will intervene in a war across the Taiwan Strait.”

The policy, experts say, deters China from invading Taiwan and prevents Taiwan from declaring independence.

While this explains the dual tone of statements by the US administration on Taiwan, the fact remains that China’s “One China principle” does have an upper hand.

Where does India stand on the issue?

India in recent years has slowly stepped away from the “One China policy” with a clear message to Beijing that it is subject to conditions.

In August 2022, when asked about India’s stand on the policy, MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi responded, “India’s relevant policies are well known and consistent. They do not require reiteration.”

Minister of External Affairs S Jaishankar in a no holds barred statement recently said that “India-China relations can’t be normal if peace and tranquility in border areas is disturbed.”

In 2014, the then EAM Sushma Swaraj took a tough stand against the One China policy. She reminded her counterpart to heed the “One India policy” first.

India currently enjoys unofficial yet close relations with Taiwan.
