When Karnataka’s Congress leader called the new CBI Director Praveen Sood ‘Nalayak’ and vowed to take action against him

Praveen Sood, the DGP of Karnataka, has been appointed as the new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as per an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT). When Praveen Sood was working as the DGP of Karnataka, the state Congress leader DK Shivakumar had once called him ‘Nalayak’ meaning incompetent, or good-for-nothing. DK Shivakumar had also vowed to take action against him.

On Tuesday, 14th March 2023, Karnataka Congress President DK Shivakumar unleashed a verbal attack against the then State Director General and Inspector General of Police, Praveen Sood, referring to him as ‘Nalayak‘ and alleging his affiliation with the BJP which was in power in the state at that time. DK Shivakumar further stated that if Congress were to come into power in the state, they would take decisive measures against the senior officer Praveen Sood.

DK Shivakumar had said at that time, “This DGP is a ‘Nalayak’. Let our government come. We will take action against him. Congress had also written to ECI to remove him. I thought he (Praveen Sood) was a respected man. Immediately, a case should be registered against him and he should be arrested.”

DK Shivakumar had also said at that time, “He has finished three years in service. How many days do you want to keep and worship him? He has been filing cases only against Congress. He has registered more than 25 cases against us and not a single case against BJP leaders. Let our government come. We will take action against him.”

DK Shivakumar made these remarks while he was criticising the Karnataka police saying that they have registered several cases against Congress leaders and not even a single case against BJP leaders.

Praveen Sood will take charge of CBI just when Congress is set to form the government in Karnataka, with DK Shivakumar set to get a major role in the new government.

Who is Praveen Sood?

Praveen Sood, a 1986-batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre, has served as the State DGP for the past three years. Originally, Sood hails from Himachal Pradesh and is an alumnus of IIT-Delhi. He was appointed the Karnataka DGP in 2020. His other stints include Superintendent of Police, Bellary, and Raichur before getting posted to Bangalore city as Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order.

Sood also worked as principal secretary of the Home Department, ADGP Karnataka State Reserve Police, and ADGP Administration. He was slated to retire in May 2024. However, with his appointment as the new Director of the CBI, he will now work for a tenure of two years, ensuring his presence in office until at least May 2025. It must be mentioned that an existing Director of the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) can serve for a maximum period of 5 years and a minimum tenure of 2 years.

Bihar: Chaos at JDU president Lalan Singh’s ‘mutton-rice’ feast as mahagathbandhan workers rush to eat the food, police use force to control the crowd

In a rather embarrassing incident for Janata Dal-United (JDU) president Lalan Singh, chaos ensued at the “mutton party” organized by him. The “mahabhoj” was organized by the Munger MP to honor the workers of the JDU-RJD grand alliance. Police even had to use force to get the situation back under control.

The mahabhoj was held at the Polo Ground in Munger, where Mahagathbandhan workers had gathered for a mutton feast. However, the first row of almost 2000 chairs was quickly filled, and workers eager to eat mutton began to force their way into the temporary shelter (pandaal). During this time, the workers also got into a heated argument with each other.

The argument soon threatened to get out of control turn and workers of the grand alliance pushed and shoved even the JDU block president. However, as the situation deteriorated, police took action and began chasing away the workers who were causing a nuisance. People were spotted falling over each other and fleeing the area in the face of police action. It is being said that Sadar DSP Rajesh Kumar Sinha’s fingers were injured during the scuffle.

Meanwhile, taking a swipe at the JDU, BJP leader Nikhil Anand questioned if the meat served at the “mahabhoj” was jhatka or halal.

“JDU President Lalan Singh will feed 35000 people a feast of mutton-pulao! The question is will this mutton be ‘Jhatka’ or ‘Halal’? Or are there separate arrangements for those who eat ‘Jhatka’ and ‘Halal’? If it is not like this, then whose religion will Lalnaji corrupt ‘ #हलाल ‘ or ‘ #झटका ‘. #बिहार #Bihar,” Anand tweeted.

JDU workers had clashed in Darbhanga earlier

On Saturday, May 13, JDU workers clashed among themselves at an event in Darbhanga after the supporters of JDU leaders Sanjay Jha and Ali Ashraf Fatmi raised slogans in support of their respective leaders. All the efforts at persuading the supporters of the two leaders went in vain. Following this, JDU president Lalan Singh left the stage and did not stop even after his party leaders tried to stop him.

Uttar Pradesh: BJP makes history, party candidate Vipin Garg becomes first non-Muslim chairman of Deoband municipality

The results of the local body elections in Uttar Pradesh were declared on Saturday, May 13. Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the biggest winner sweeping all the municipal corporations and major municipalities and town panchayats. In the Muslim-majority town of Deoband in the Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh, BJP secured a victory for the first time in its history. Party candidate Vipin Garg became the first non-Muslim chairman of the Deoband municipality in the last 140 years.

The Deoband election proved to be highly captivating this time around. Vipin Garg, a trusted associate of Brijesh Singh, the local MLA and a minister of state in the Yogi Adityanath government, ran as the BJP candidate. He competed against Zahir Fatima, the wife of former SP MLA Mavia Ali. Notably, other political parties also nominated Muslim candidates for the election. However, it was Vipin Garg from the BJP who emerged victorious, securing a historic win.

Islamic educational institution Darul Uloom is situated in Deoband, due to which there is a significant Muslim-majority population in the area. Vipin Garg of the BJP emerged victorious by a margin of 4,700 votes, defeating Zahir Fatima from the Samajwadi Party. The counting was conducted under stringent security measures at the polling station in the Gokulchand Rahati Devi Girls Inter College. The BJP candidate took the lead right from the first round and maintained his lead till the end.

Vipin Garg got a total of 22,659 votes while Zaheer Fatima secured the second position with 17,959 votes. Jamaluddin Ansari, the BSP candidate, claimed the third spot with 7,079 votes. The Congress candidate Naushad Qureshi received a mere 483 votes.

In other mayoral elections in the district, BJP’s Ajay Kumar defeated BSP’s Khadija Masood by a margin of 8,031 votes in Saharanpur. Of the 11 civic bodies in the district, three were won by the BJP, three by independents and two each by the SP and BSP. Rashtriya Lok Dal won one civic body.

No difference with Siddaramaiah, many times I have sacrificed and stood with him: DK Shivakumar on the Karnataka CM race

Following an overwhelming victory in the Karnataka elections, the power tussle started within the Congress party for the chief minister post. Amidst the speculations over a rift with Siddaramaiah, Congress state president DK Shivakumar tried to lay the speculations to rest. DK Shivakumar said that there are no differences with the former CM, he also added that he has many times extended support to Siddaramaiah.

“Some people say that I have differences with Siddaramaiah but I want to make it clear that there is no difference between us. Many times I have sacrificed for the party and stood with Siddaramaiah ji. I have given cooperation to Siddaramaiah”, Shivakumar said.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that the supporters of former CM Siddaramaiah put up a poster outside his residence in Bengaluru, calling him “the next CM of Karnataka.”

Soon after, supporters of DK Shivakumar placed a poster outside his Bengaluru residence, demanding that he be declared “CM of the state.”

Some media reports also suggest that the Congress party may reach a middle ground with both DK Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah getting equal tenures as the Karnataka CM.

As opposed to Siddaramaiah, DK Shivakumar has always been a member of Congress and has never lost an election since he won his first one in 1989. Siddaramaiah has been part of All India Progressive Janata Dal, Janata Dal, and Janata Dal (Secular) in the past before joining Congress.

In the Karnataka Assembly elections, the Bhartiya Janata Party managed to secure only 66 seats, while the Congress increased its seat count from 80 to 135 seats, ensuring the party’s significant victory. The Janata Dal (Secular), which won 37 seats in the last election, got only 19 this time.

Karnataka DGP Praveen Sood appointed the new CBI Director

Praveen Sood, the DGP of Karnataka, has been appointed as the new Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) as per an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT).

The order said, “Approval of the Competent Authority is hereby conveyed to the appointment of Shri Praveen Sood, IPS (KN:86) as Director, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for a period of two years from the date of assumption of charge of the office vice Shri Subodh Kumar Jaiswal, IPS (MH:85) consequent upon completion of his tenure.”

Sood, a 1986-batch IPS officer from the Karnataka cadre, has served as the State DGP for the past three years.

On May 13, a three-member panel consisting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India D.Y. Chandrachud, and Leader of the Opposition (Congress) in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury finalized the appointment of Mr. Sood as the new Director of CBI. The three-member committee chose the new CBI Director as the existing CBI Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal’s tenure is slated to end in May 2023.

Maharashtra: Foreign cigarettes worth 24 crores seized by Revenue Intelligence in Mumbai, 5 individuals arrested

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in Mumbai reported on Sunday that it has apprehended five people, including an importer, for attempting to smuggle 1.2 crore sticks of cigarettes of foreign origin, with an estimated market value of 24 crores. The agency informed that these cigarettes are prohibited because they do not meet the country’s prerequisite standards.

The items were taken from a container after an intelligence input. The shipment was intended to be trans-shipped to Arshiya Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) for further clearance.

The officials kept an eye on the container’s movement after getting the intelligence. It was discovered that the container, which had departed Navi Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva Port on its way to Arshiya FTWZ, had been rerouted to a private godown where it was subsequently seized by DRI officials.

The entire 40-foot container was discovered to be filled with foreign cigarettes of multiple brands which are not allowed to be imported in India.

The syndicate intended to deceive customs officers by taking the cigarettes out of the container and replacing them with commodities listed on import documents. Before the container was carried into Arshiya FTWZ, the godown was already packed with the stated goods that were meant to be placed inside once the cigarettes had been moved out.

In an immediate follow-up operation, another cache of 13 lakh foreign-origin cigarettes that had previously been smuggled by the same network was found in another godown.

USA: 13-year-old girl thwarts a shark attack at Florida beach, gets bitten in the stomach, arm, knee and finger

A brave 13-year-old girl named Ella Reed is on the mend after she courageously fought off a shark that attacked her at a Florida beach on Thursday. She was at Fort Pierce Beach, sitting in the shallow water next to a jetty when she suddenly felt a searing pain in her side and spotted the predator.

“The shark itself was so powerful. That was what I felt the most because it was hitting my stomach really hard,” she informed. She reported to have hit the bull shark, which was five to six feet long, causing it to briefly recede before approaching again.

The Florida native mentioned, “It wouldn’t leave me alone, so I had to use my arm and use my hand too, so it got my arm and my finger.”

The teenager yelled for her mother and brother who were at the beach with her as the water beast came closer to her again. “It was insane because she was totally covered in blood pretty much from head to toe so she couldn’t really see what went on. She was shaking, but she was calm,” noted her mother.

She was bitten on the top of her knee, arm, stomach, and finger and had to receive 19 stitches for her injuries.

“I was kinda in shock about everything that happened, so I wasn’t really in pain because the adrenaline was through the roof,” the teen girl remarked. She added that she is proud of her scars.

She asserted that she has never been frightened of the ocean and that she intends to return to the water following this incident. “It was clear water so you never really know when it’s going to happen,” she commented.

Florida is the shark bite capital of the world, according to the University of Florida’s international shark attack file. The region accounted for 16 of the 57 unprovoked shark bites documented in 2022. Shark attacks there led to two amputations last year.

The majority of unprovoked shark bites worldwide occurred in the US and Australia. Despite the fact that there were five fatal attacks in 2022, the statistics showed a decrease from 10 in 2020 and 9 in 2021.

“Generally speaking, the number of sharks in the world’s oceans has decreased, which may have contributed to recent lulls,” disclosed Gavin Naylor, of the Florida Museum of Natural History.

BJP turncoat Jagadish Shettar passes the buck after losing in Karnataka polls, blames ‘money power’

Hours after losing the Karnataka elections from the Hubli-Dharwad-Central constituency on a Congress ticket, Jagadish Shettar went on to blame the ‘money power’ and ‘pressure tactics’ of BJP for his unceremonious defeat.

Shettar, who was earlier a Minister in the cabinet of ex-Karnataka CM and BJP leader BS Yediyurappa, reportedly left the saffron party after being denied a ticket in the 2023 Karnataka elections.

“In the last six elections, I have not at all used any money power. I have not distributed any money to the voters. It is the first time that the BJP candidate has distributed ₹ 500-1000 to the voters,” he claimed.

“Money power and pressure tactics have affected my (candidature)…Money power can change a lot of things…There are a lot of business people and industrialists in the Hubbali constituency,” Jagadish Shettar alleged.

He further claimed that the loss of the BJP in the 2023 Karnataka Vidhan Sabha election is a setback for the Modi-Shah duo in the run-up to the 2024 General Elections.

“All of them targetted Jagdish Shettar, and what did that do? They lost the entire state…What did they achieve? Was defeating Jagdish Shettar the final goal?” the former BJP leader brazened it out.

Interestingly, Shettar’s allegations of the use of ‘money power’ and ‘pressure tactics’ come at a time when his new party aka Congress managed to ace the polls with a large margin.

Jagadish Shettar loses to BJP’s Mahesh Tenginakai

Jagadish Shettar won on a BJP ticket three times from the Hubli-Dharwad-Central seat during the 2008, 2013, and 2018 Vidhan Sabha elections. However, defecting to the Congress proved unfruitful as he lost out to his rival Mahesh Tenginakai by 34289 votes in the 2023 polls.

Shettar had resigned as MLA and from the primary membership of the party in April this year, after he claimed he felt ‘humiliated’ as BJP, sidelined him to give preference to younger candidates in the upcoming state assembly elections.

Reacting to his allegation, Karnataka’s chief minister, Basavaraj Bommai, had said that BJP offered Shettar a number of options, including a bigger post inside the organisation, governorship, or party ticket to a relative; however, Shettar rejected each one of them.
