On February 23, the Maharashtra Police registered an FIR against a person named Sahil Shaikh for molesting an 18-year-old Hindu girl in the Bhingar area of Ahmednagar district. The accused was harrasing the girl for refusing to enter into a relationship with him and threatened to burn her face with acid.

The victim girl confirmed to OpIndia that the accused was arrested by the Police while he tried to escape. “The Police arrested him on the night of February 23 while he was going to Pune,” she said.

According to the FIR copy obtained by OpIndia, Shaikh has been pursuing the girl for some time, ignoring her rejections, and then one day issued her serious threats. The incident happened in the first week of February when the girl was returning home from her college. The victim was on her bike when she was stopped by the accused in Beleshwar Chowk. Shaikh then publicly molested her after asking her to reconsider his proposal to enter into a relationship with him. He also threatened to kill her father and burn her face with acid if she refused his proposal.

“I am in the first year of my college. Sahil is friends with one of our college group members. We were superficially introduced to the group. After that day he would come outside the college and try to talk to me. He also would interfere in the college group matters. He used to follow me and wanted me to communicate back with him. Later one day he proposed to me and asked me to get into a love relationship with him,” the girl stated in the FIR.

“On refusal”, the girl said, “Shaikh threatened to kill me. He also threatened my friends to stay away from me.” This way it would be easy for him to follow the victim girl while on her way to college and home.

In the first week of February, Shaikh stopped the victim girl while on her way to home in Yashwant Nagar and asked her to reconsider the proposal. When she refused, he molested her and threatened to kill her. He also said that he would kill her father. The victim girl got scared and decided not to tell any of this thing at home.

Recently, on February 22, the accused forcefully barged into the girl’s home as he learned that the girl’s father had fixed her marriage in her community. He threatened her father and asked him to cancel the marriage. “Tum tumhare beti ki shaadi age badhao varna mai tamasha karunga (postpone your daughter’s wedding, otherwise I’ll create a huge scene here),” the accused was quoted as saying in the complaint.

He also issued threats to the girl’s father saying that he would murder his other family members and would ruin his daughter’s face with acid if he fails to call off the wedding. The wedding is scheduled for today ie March 1.

The victim girl while exclusively talking to OpIndia confirmed the accused’s arrest and stated that his family members are forcing her father to take back the case. “They want my father to take this case back. But given my marriage and threats issued by him earlier, my father has refused to take back the case. Also, we have deployed bouncers and required security out of the house. Anything can happen. He had issued threats to kill my family and launch an acid attack on me. My father is quite worried,” she said.

OpIndia also tried to connect to the state police to inquire about further action in the case, but the calls remained unanswered. The Police have booked and arrested the accused under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 354 D (stalking behaviours interrelated to harassment and intimidation), 452 (house-trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal Intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. Further investigation into the case is underway.

The People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India along with actor Parvathy Thiruvothu donated a mechanical elephant worth Rs 5 lakhs to Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple in Thrissur. The PETA indicated that deploying real animals for temple rituals was causing harm to the animals as they needed to stay away from their natural habitat and undergo trauma in captivity.

“JUMBO NEWS! Kerala’s Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple will use a lifelike mechanical elephant to perform rituals, allowing real elephants to remain with their families in nature,” the official Twitter handle of PETA India wrote. The handle also shared a video in which it showed the real elephants being allegedly beaten by the animal trainers.

Irinjadappilly Sree Krishna Temple priest Rajkumar Namboothiri also welcomed the initiative and stated that real worship is to protect all forms of life created by God. “Allowing elephants to stay in nature should be the real way of revering the elephant God, Lord Ganesha,” he added.

Meanwhile, PETA also stated that elephants are highly social beings and that they need to live in forests with their families for their well-being. It also encouraged the local temples to use mechanical elephants and send real elephants to the forests.

The mechanised ‘animal’ named ‘Irinjadappilly Raman’ weighs 800 kg and is around 11-foot-tall. According to the reports, it underwent the traditional ceremony of offering animals to the temple gods, known as ‘Nadayiruthal’. At the occasion, the animal was dressed in decorative covering to resemble the installation of an actual elephant.

The robot’s trunk, which has five electric motors, can be controlled by the operator via a switch. The project of ‘cruelty-free festivals’, which promotes the rehabilitation of ‘captive’ elephants, was praised by the animal rights organization. The machine, which can hold five people at once, was made by Thrissur-based craftsmen who are also working on launching elephant statues for the Dubai Shopping Festival.

“Indian film actor Parvathy Thiruvothu sent her support to PETA India in presenting this innovative solution that will spare real elephants a life in which they are taken away from their families and forest homes, deprived of everything that is natural and important to them, and kept constantly chained, lame, and lonely,” PETA said in a statement.

It also included data from the Heritage Animal Task Force showing that elephants released from captivity killed roughly 526 people in Kerala over a 15-year period, and asked everyone to petition state chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan to outlaw the commercial usage of the animal.

According to a statement made by temple priest Rajkumar Namboothiri and cited by Indian Express, the temple decided against using captive elephants due to the animals’ high costs and an increase in violent animal occurrences. He urged other temples to do the same.

Notably, throughout the years, PETA India has come under fire for its hypocrisy and use of double standards in regard to its stance on animal abuse. It fails to uphold the same compassion for animals when it comes to festivals of other religions. It has been slammed by many for its own cruelty to animals it claims to ‘rescue’ and conspicuous silent on rampant cattle and goat slaughter during Bakra Eid.

On the contrary, PETA India has regularly indulged in shaming Hindu festivals and how they are celebrated. Earlier during Holi, it had appealed to Hindus to stop throwing colors at animals and opt for vegan thandai. It had also asked Hindus to stop bursting crackers during Diwali as it might ‘scare’ the animals.

The issue of Temple elephants has been a topic of controversy in recent years, especially due to animal rights organisations like PETA and activists who oppose the idea of elephants being kept in captivity. It is notable here that the procession of majestic elephants is the key attraction of the Thrissur Pooram festival and the deities from each temple are placed on the back of elephants. The elephants move among the devotees, offering Darshan and blessings. As elephants are a part of Hindu religious symbolism as representatives of wealth and power, many temples have their own pet elephants.

The temple elephants also have their own fandom and are loved by the locals immensely. Thrissur Raman, a 63-year-old male elephant from the Thechikottukavu temple, popularly known as the Thrissur Raman, is one of the largest living Asian elephants. He has a dedicated fandom and is the main attraction in the Thrissur festival. However, in recent years, Raman’s health has deteriorated and he is currently almost blind. Recently, he got aggressive during a festival in Palakkad and attacked his own mahout.

Incidents of temple elephants going aggressive fuel the discussion and controversies around keeping the majestic creatures in captivity, to be deployed in rituals and festivals under noise and massive crowd, triggering them into aggressive behaviour.

Jammu: Madarsa teacher and his accomplice arrested for keeping 16-year-old girl hostage for 5 months

Two persons including a teacher in a madarsa have been arrested by the Samba Police in Jammu for abducting a 16-year-old girl and keeping her hostage for five months. The two accused have been identified as Maulvi Bilal and his accomplice Riyaz Ahmed. The victim girl used to study Arabic in a local madrasa where the accused Maulvi Bilal is a teacher. The accused maulvi Bilal had lured her and abducted her, and kept her with him for five months. The Samba police shared this update on Sunday 26th February 2023. The girl has been rescued now by the police.

According to reports, the incident took place in the Chak Dayala area under the Rakh AMB Talli station. This area is situated close to the Pakistan border. The minor victim girl studied Arabic language and Islamic religious teachings in a local madrasa in which the accused maulvi Bilal worked as a teacher.

Accused Bilal hails from Gandoh of the Doda district and he also runs a madrasa in Doda. Five months ago he joined the madrasa in Samba. He was arrested after a complaint was lodged by the father of the minor girl. In his complaint, the victim’s father said that maulvi Bilal lured his daughter and kept her with him for five months.

Acting on the father’s complaint, the Samba police station registered an FIR against the cleric under section 363 of the IPC. A case was registered against the cleric under Section 363 of the IPC. The abducted girl was rescued by the police. The kidnapper cleric Bilal was arrested from Ramsu, district Ramban. Along with this, another accused who helped the kidnapper was also arrested by the police. This accomplice of the accused maulvi Bilal is identified as Riyaz Ahmed and he is a resident of the Doda district.

A police spokesperson said, “Father of the minor girl had lodged a written report at Police Post (PP) Rakh Amb Talli that his sixteen-year-old girl had been kidnapped by one Madrasa Moulvi, who hails from Gandoh area of Doda district and had been staying at Madarsa in the guise of Moulvi at border village Chak Dayala, Samba for the last five months. Acting upon the complaint of father, police registered FIR u/s 363 IPC at PS Samba and recovered kidnapped girl and arrested kidnapper Madrasa Moulvi from Ramsoo, district Ramban. Another accused, who provided abetment to kidnapper, has also been arrested by police.”

In a major rejig in the Delhi cabinet necessitated by the resignations of Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and Satyendar Jain, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has sent the names of Aam Aadmi Party MLAs Saurabh Bhardwaj and Atishi to Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena to be elevated as ministers, sources said on Wednesday. 

The development comes after Sisodia, who headed 18 departments, and Jain, who has been in jail for months in a money laundering case, stepped down as ministers. Sources on Tuesday had said the departments held by Sisodia will be redistributed to senior AAP leaders Kailash Gahlot and Raaj Kumar Anand. 

“Sisodia held 18 departments, some of which will now be handled by Kailash Gahlot and the rest by Raaj Kumar Anand,” a source said on Tuesday. 

Sisodia was earlier arrested by the CBI in connection with the Delhi excise policy case. 

Sisodia was arrested on Sunday in an ongoing investigation of a case related to alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the new excise policy of the Delhi government. 

The Supreme Court on Tuesday refused to entertain Sisodia’s plea challenging his arrest in the excise policy case. 

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud said the top court is not inclined to entertain the petition at this stage, suggesting that Sisodia move Delhi High Court. 

“We cannot interfere in the matter as it may open the gate of people approaching the top court in every such matter,” the bench observed. 

Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Monday sent him to CBI custody for 5 days. 

The CBI had also quizzed AAP leader Jain in Tihar Jail in connection with alleged corruption in the implementation of the now-junked Delhi Excise policy. 

Jain is currently lodged in judicial custody in connection with a money laundering case registered by the Enforcement Directorate (ED). 

Recently, the CBI and ED made several arrests for alleged corruption in the implementation of the Delhi Excise Policy.

A 32-year-old Indian national Mohamed Rahmathullah Syed Ahmed was on Tuesday shot dead by Australian Police after he allegedly stabbed a cleaner and threatened police officers with a knife, The Sydney Morning Herald reported. 

The Indian Consulate General in Australia identified that the attacker was from the Indian state of Tamil Nadu and was living in Auburn on a bridging visa. Detectives are investigating whether mental health played a role in the incident. According to detectives, Ahmed stabbed a cleaner and then threatened police officers with a knife before being fatally shot by the police. 

Ahmed attacked the 28-year-old cleaner at Auburn train station in Sydney’s west at 12.03 am on Tuesday before arriving at Auburn police station about five minutes later, reported The Sydney Morning Herald citing police. 

Indian Consulate General in Australia, as quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald, said: “The incident is extremely disturbing and unfortunate. We have formally taken up the matter with the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, NSW Office as well as state police authorities.” 

When two officers tried to leave the police station to respond to reports of the stabbing, they were confronted by Ahmed, who tried to attack them. 

Following the attack, the senior officer fired three shots, two of which hit Syed Ahmed in the chest. A probationary constable used her Taser on the man. 

Though Syed was treated at the scene by paramedics and was rushed to Westmead Hospital, he was pronounced dead just after 1:30 am, the Sydney Morning Herald reported. 

NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Stuart Smith, at a press conference on Tuesday, said the officers had just seconds to respond and were left with no choice but to shoot the man. 

“I fully support these officers. It’s traumatic. It’s a significant incident at one of our police stations,” he said. 

“There just isn’t an impending time. It is immediate. He launches through the glass doors at the officers; they had very little time to react.” Smith said the counter-terrorism unit would be brought in to help in the investigation. 

Asked about the role of the counter-terrorism unit, Smith said “it’s part of our model in terms of response. Obviously, when someone armed themselves with a knife and stabs an individual and then tries to attack police, which is the CCTV footage, [it] is highly concerning. When that’s involved, it triggers a number of intelligence responses and investigative responses which we’re dealing with,” Smith said, as quoted by The Sydney Morning Herald. 

Syed Ahmed had five previous interactions with police, all of which were non-criminal and COVID related. Smith said mental health would be a significant line of inquiry. 

Detectives have already spoken to the cleaner, who was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Gurugram man who stole flower pots arranged on Expressway for G20 event arrested by police

The Gurugram Police on Wednesday arrested a man who came in a high-end car and stole flower pots placed on the street ahead of a G20 conference. This is a day after the Police booked the man under Section 379 (theft) of the IPC.

According to a tweet shared by Times of India journalist, the accused man has been identified as Manmohan, a Gurugram resident whose car has been registered in Haryana. The Police has further seized the car of the accused and all the flower pots which the latter had stolen from the street.

Yesterday a video had gone viral wherein two men could be seen stealing flower pots and storing them in the car. The incident reportedly took place near the Ambience Mall on the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. The man who recorded the incident’s footage shared it on social media on Monday, February 27.

In the video that has now gone viral, multiple flower pots filled with in-bloom flowers are seen maintained in a place where a poster advertising the G20 conference can also be seen. Two men are seen lifting a few flower pots and loading them in their high-end SUV’s boot.

Later, the Deputy Commissioner of Gurugram, Nishant Kumar Yadav took cognisance of the event and asked the Gurugram police to intervene and investigate the matter. Following the complaint, an FIR was registered against unidentified accused under Section 379 (theft) of the IPC.

However, the Police happened to identify the accused as Manmohan and arrested him on the charges of theft on March 1. Further investigations in the case are underway.

FCRA licence of Centre for Policy Research suspended amidst income tax probe: reports

The Foreign Contribution Regulation Act (FCRA) license of the Delhi-based public think-tank Centre for Policy Research (CPR) has been suspended by the Central government, as per a report by Economic Times.

The FCRA licence of CPR was under scrutiny after income tax raids conducted in September last year on CPR and Oxfam India.

Notably, the FCRA licence of Oxfam India was revoked in January last year as the trust did not apply for renewal of the licence, as said by the Ministry of Home Affairs back then. 

As per the ET report, CPR’s licence has been revoked due to non-compliance with FCRA rules. CPR had filed for the renewal of the licence. 

Citing officials, ET reported that the modalities are being worked out for CPR to utilise the funds received in the FCRA account. The CPR filing states that during the period of October 2022 to December 2022, funds amounting to Rs 10.1 crore were received from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the University of Pennsylvania, the World Resources Institute and Duke University. 

Reportedly, the findings of I-T raids on CPR were one of the reasons leading to the suspension of the FCRA license. The Ministry is reported to have sought clarification and documentation pertaining to FCRA funds received by CPR. In a mailed response to ET, a senior functionary at CPR has stated that the FCRA application is under renewal. 

It is notable that in September last year, Income tax raids were conducted at the Centre for Policy Research. CPR is headed by Yamini Aiyar who is the daughter of controversial Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar.

On February 28, YouTuber, Elvish Yadav rubbished the claims that his car was used to steal flowerpots. In a statement on Instagram and Twitter, Yadav said he would take legal action against those who are spreading the rumours on social media platforms. His name was dragged into the controversy after the car used to allegedly steal flowerpots from government property was seen in videos featuring Elvish Yadav.

Reportedly, the Police have arrested one Manmohan Yadav in the matter.

In a statement issued in Instagram stories, Yadav said, “A rumour is making rounds that Elvish Yadav stole flower pots. Everyone knows which car I own and the number it carries. I bought Porche recently, which is yet to get registered. The Fortuner I have has the number 0001. I do not have a KIA car. There are hundreds of cars in my meetups. That does not mean I own all the cars. I used that car in a meetup, as it has a sunroof. I just wanted to see the public and wave at them. I am taking legal action against one [who started the rumours].” He sarcastically added, “Fix yourself, else I will steal flowerpots from your home,” and laughed.

Yadav said such rumours would not hamper the meetup schedule. “Do you think I would steal flowerpots? I will steal girls’ hearts. I will steal the hearts of haters’ mothers. I have a lot of flowerpots at my home. I have neem and pipal trees at my home. I do not need more flowerpots,” he added.

On Twitter, he said, “This is not my vehicle. I kindly ask everyone not to spread any untrue information about me. I’m suing the people who are spreading false information about me.”

Founder of Unseen India Utkarsh Singh quoted him with a screenshot of the car from a video featuring Yadav, to which Yadav said, “Get ready with the money. Defamation is on its way. Your house will be sold in this.”

When Utkarsh said he did not have flowerpots to poke Yadav further, he said, “You do not even have a house. Say something new.”

Twitter user Dr Nimo Yadav also accused him of stealing the flowerpots. He said, “Thoo Elvish Yadav. You have a face of a thief, but you should have at least thought of our community. You have defamed our community.” Elvish replied, “Someone, please teach this person with a pokemon-like name to run Parivahan App or check his degree.”

In a follow-up tweet, he said, “Just because I was seen in a car once, doesn’t mean I own it. Some filthy minds who have a habit of creating fake narratives once again came out of their ratholes with a cooked-up story. Forget me; they don’t even leave the country or the PM. You can’t expect more from them.”

He added, “One more message, lies do not live long. They can try their level best and run the narratives they like, but I have spoken for Hindus and will continue to do so. Jai Shri Ram.”

Pakistan: Abhinandan Vartaman’s photo displayed during PSL match, may affect broadcast in India

On February 27, an image of Indian Air Force pilot Abhinandan Varthaman was once again used to mock India. This time, the image was shown during a Pakistan Super League game between Lahore Qalandars and Islamabad United. During the match, an image of the Indian Air Force hero holding a cup of tea was displayed on the giant screen during the mid-game break.

Notably, the picture was from 2019, when Abhinandan’s jet crashed inside Pakistan’s territory, and he was taken into custody by the Pakistan Army. At that time, a video of him surfaced sipping tea offered by the Pakistan Army. Later, Pakistan has to release Abhinandan under intense pressure from the Indian side. Not to forget, Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader Ayaz Sadiq had said in a statement that Pakistan released Abhinandan out of fear that India might attack if he was not released.

Currently, PSL is being broadcasted in India on Sony Network. If such incidents are repeated, the broadcast may get stopped.

Repeated mocking of India using the incident

This is not the first time the same incident has been used to mock India. Even PSL has used “tea is fantastic” once before to mock India, which sparked uproar on social media. At that time, Lahore Qalandars had tweeted a photograph of Mohammad Hussai sipping tea with the caption “Ye tu “Tea is Fantastic” hogya”.

In December 2022, a Pakistani journalist questioned Ben Stokes, “How was the tea?” in an attempt to humiliate and mock the Indian forces, echoing the same exact question they asked Wing Commander Abhinandan while he was in Pakistani custody.

Abhinandan’s jet crashed during a dogfight

Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman was captured by the Pakistani military on February 27 2019, when the MiG-21 he was flying was shot down by a Pakistani missile seconds after he had shot down a Pakistani Air Force’s F-16 aircraft. Abhinandan was part of an IAF sortie which was scrambled to intercept an intrusion by Pakistan fighter planes in Jammu and Kashmir a day after the Balakot strikes. On February 28, Imran Khan announced that his govt had decided to return Abhinandan as a “gesture of peace”, and the Wing Commander had crossed the India-Pakistan border at Wagah on March 1 2019.

During his custody in Pakistan, a video was released by Pakistani authorities thanking the officials which he was asked if he liked the tea. Abhinandan replied, “tea was fantastic”. Since then, Pakistanis have used the phrase to create memes for reasons best known to them. They seem to think that the incident, where a lone IAF pilot landed in Pakistan, sipped tea, spent over 24 hours and was respectfully escorted back to India because Pakistan was scared of Indian action, somehow glorifies Pakistan and mocks India. But then, Pakistan is generally not known for smartness.

They probably used the ironic memes to compensate for the meme fest on the Indian side every February. On February 26, 2019, the Pakistan defence fan acocunt shared a picture of nighttime cityscape and claimed “sleep tight, because PAF is awake”. Just a few hours later, a dozen Indian Air Force fighter jets had veered deep inside Pakistani territory and bombed a terrorist camp to dust in Balakot, while PAF slept. Screenshots of that tweet are very popular in India.
