Huge cache of drugs cash recovered from Shaheen Bagh, NCB busts Indo-Afghan drug syndicate in Delhi

In a major drug haul in the national capital, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) of Delhi seized 50 kg of heroin, 47 kg of suspected narcotics, ₹30 lakhs of drug money in cash counting machines, and other incriminating materials from a residential premise in Jamia Nagar, Shaheen Bagh on 27th April 2022. According to NCB, this stock caught in Delhi is connected to an Indo-Afghan drug syndicate. NCB also said that the recovered heroin came from Afghanistan. The agency has arrested one person in this case.

The Narcotics Control Bureau, while giving details of the raid, said that this is the biggest drug catch in the recent past. The NCB has also seized 47 kg of suspected substances along with 50 kg of high-quality heroin from the spot at Shaheen Bagh. Not only this, but the agency has also seized ₹30 lakh cash, a cash counting machine, and other items from Jamia Nagar in Shaheen Bagh.

Deputy Director-General, Operations, (NCB) Sanjay Singh said, “The seized heroin originated from Afghanistan and drug money is suspected to be channelled through hawala.” According to the press release by the NCB, it has been revealed during investigations that an Indo- Afghan syndicate based in Delhi/NCR or neighboring states seems to be connected to the case. These syndicates have expertise in manufacturing/adultering Heroin locally. These syndicates have been smuggling goods to India through maritime as well as land border routes wherein heroin was smuggled in alongside various legitimate goods. Heroin was later extracted from those goods by the Indian counterparts with the help of some Afghan nationals.

The press release says, “The contraband was stored in travel bags, bag packs, and jute sack. The seized Heroin was packed in packings of Flipkart. One Indian national has been arrested in the case.”

NCB Deputy Director-General, Gyaneshwar Singh said while talking to the Republic World, “The organization has been keeping a close watch on these international traffickers. This has linkages to many other countries, including Dubai, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and many states in north India. We are examining their linkages with other syndicates. This area and such kinds of people are on our radar. We are keeping watch on certain associates and other connected areas. We are expecting more recoveries in the NCR region.”

Navneet Rana’s 8-year-old daughter Aarohi Rana recites Hanuman Chalisa, prays for the early release of her parents

While MP Navneet Rana and her husband MLA Ravi Rana are lodged in jail for trying to recite the Hanuman Chalisa near the Maharashtra CM’s residence, their daughter was seen today reciting the prayer at their home. Navneet Rana’s 8-year-old daughter Aarohi has recited Hanuman Chalisa at her home in Amravati and prayed for the early release of her parents.

Independent Lok Sabha MP from the Amravati constituency Navneet Rana and her husband, independent MLA from Badnera constituency of Amravati Ravi Rana, both were arrested by the Mumbai police for their foiled attempt to recite Hanuman Chalisa in front of CM Uddhav Thackeray’s house Matoshree on 23rd April 2022.

As the 8-year-old daughter of MP Navneet Rana and MLA Ravi Rana chanted Hanuman Chalisa at their home in Amravati, she said that she is praying to the deity for the early release of her parents from the jail. At present, Navneet Rana and Ravi Rana are lodged in jail. Their bail plea will be heard in the sessions court on 29th April 2022.

Amidst the loudspeaker controversy, the Rana couple had last week announced that they would chant the Hanuman Chalisa outside Uddhav Thackeray’s house ‘Matoshree’. On Friday morning, a large number of Shiv Sena goons gathered outside Rana’s house. Shiv Sena goons accused the Rana couple of ‘hurting religious sentiments’ and trying to incite violence. In response to a complaint by these Shiv Sena goons, a case was filed against the Amaravati MP under section 153A of the IPC (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to the maintenance of harmony). The couple is accused of giving derogatory, offensive, and inciting statements against the Maharashtra govt and CM Uddhav Thackeray over the Hanuman Chalisa vs Azaan issue.

After the arrest, Navneet Rana said that Mumbai police forcefully took her away from her home. She also sought the help of former CM and BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis in the matter. The matter has now reached Delhi. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has sought a factual report from the Maharashtra government on the arrest of independent Lok Sabha MP Navneet Rana and the allegations of inhuman treatment at the Khar police station in Mumbai.

WB, Maharashtra, Delhi impose 25%+ tax on Aviation Fuel, the reason why flight tickets are expensive: Minister Hardeep Singh Puri

On Thursday, Hardeep Singh Puri, the Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, slammed the non-NDA-ruled states for not slashing VAT on fuel prices to provide relief to the public despite a call from Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that the states of West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Delhi imposed heavy Value Added Taxes (VAT) on petrol, diesel, and Aviation Turbine Fuel.

He stated that the prices of petrol will be cheaper in the opposition-ruled states if the state governments levy less VAT on fuel prices. He also said that the states charged more than 25 percent of VAT on Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) and that was the only reason why the air ticket prices hadn’t come down. “Ever wondered why air ticket prices haven’t come down? ATF constitutes about 40 percent of the cost of airline operations. But West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Delhi impose massive 25% plus VAT on ATF while BJP states UP and Nagaland and UT of Jammu and Kashmir charge just 1 percent”, he said.

“Such hypocrisy of opposition ruled states. PM Modi Ji ensures affordable air travel to common citizens with his vision of ‘Hawai Chappal see Hawai Jahaj tak’ but these states create impediments. They manufacture protests against ‘oil prices’ but fleece the people to fill their coffers”, he added on Twitter.

Sharing the data further, the Minister said that the BJP ruled state levied less VAT on petrol and diesel, and due to that the prices of the fuel were under control there. “VAT on petrol and diesel in the BJP-ruled states are in the range of Rs 14.50 to Rs 17.50 per liter while taxes levied by states ruled by other parties are in the range of Rs 26 to Rs 32 per liter. The difference is clear. Their intent is only to protest and criticize, not extend relief to the people,” he tweeted.

Puri meanwhile specifically attacked the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra government and said that the government should have thought about imposing fewer taxes on fuel instead of slashing the excise duty by 50 percent on imported liquor from 300 percent to 150 percent in November last year. He said that the alliance government of Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress collects Rs 32.15 taxes per liter on petrol.

It is important to note that PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday raised the issue of high fuel prices in Opposition-ruled states during a Covid review meeting with the Chief Ministers. He said that the Centre had slashed the VAT on fuel but some states had not for some reason. He requested Maharashtra, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Jharkhand to cut taxes to provide relief to people. However, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi said that the Centre should reduce excise duty.

Launching a verbal attack on the opposition, Puri said on April 28 that protests cannot change the facts. “The truth hurts, but facts speak for themselves. Maharashtra government has collected Rs 79,412 crore as fuel taxes since 2018 and is expected to collect 33,000 cr this year. Why did it not reduce VAT on petrol and diesel to provide relief to people?”, he said.

Reports mention that the BJP-ruled states levy less Value Added Tax on fuel prices. Uttarakhand levies only Rs 14.51 and Uttar Pradesh Rs 16.50. In Haryana, 18 percent VAT is collected on petrol and 16 on diesel which is among the lowest.

Remember Ayesha Khan who died of suicide by jumping in Sabarmati river over dowry and harassment, her husband got 10 years jail time

Arif Khan, husband of Ahmedabad woman Ayesha, who died of suicide in February 2021, has been sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by Ahmedabad sessions court. Ayesha had recorded a video right before jumping off in the Sabarmati river in Ahmedabad. In the video that had gone viral on social media back then, Ayesha had accused her husband and his family of dowry and harassment.

As per reports, the court considered above video message of hers as clinching evidence to pronounce sentence. The court noted that in order to stop the social evil of domestic violence, the accused should not be spared. Arif’s voice test was also carried out which was also considered an importance evidence.

Ayesha had also called her husband before jumping into the Sabarmati River. Police had recovered 70-minute call recording between Ayesha and Arif in which the latter was heard yelling at her and saying, “Go die and send me a video of your death.”

A week after Ayesha’s death, more details had emerged that revealed her husband Arif had an extra-marital affair with a Rajasthan girl. Ayesha’s husband Arif use to call up his girlfriend and indulge in vulgar conversations with her in the presence of Ayesha, reports have said. Despite harassment from her husband, Ayesha decided to remain quiet and not confront her husband.

Reportedly, Arif had confessed to Ayesha that he had another woman in his life and had maintained that he would not leave her for Ayesha. Earlier in 2020, Ayesha had also filed a dowry harassment case against Arif and his family at the Vatva Police Station in Ahmedabad.

She also called her parents before committing suicide. Her parents desperately tried to convince Ayesha to change her decision but they were unsuccessful. She told her mother, “All that has happened his enough, I am frustrated, I can’t tolerate it anymore, He (her husband Arif) wants freedom, I will give him the freedom.”

Her suicide has sparked several strong reactions on social media. Authorities had recovered the body and a case has been registered against her husband in the matter. He was later arrested in March 2021.

While the overwhelming majority of people empathised with the 23-year old, there were some who complained that she chose Haram over Halal.

As reports of Rahul Gandhi absconding emerge, Congress loyalist journalist Vir Sanghvi says Gandhi-scion should take a sabbatical and do PhD instead

A day after Poll strategist Prashant Kishor rejected Congress’ offer to join the party, it was revealed that the Gandhi-scion Rahul Gandhi was not even present in the country.

According to the reports, Rahul Gandhi is on a foreign trip even as the senior leadership of the party, including the party’s interim chief Sonia Gandhi, was holding a high-level discussion with Prashant Kishor regarding the future of the Congress party. Rahul Gandhi, one of the top decision-makers of the Congress, who is expected to lead the party, reportedly went “aloof” as Prashant Kishor put out a detailed presentation before the Congress party leadership on the renewal of the grand old party.

Instead of actively participating in the discussion of the revival of the Congress, Rahul Gandhi chose to go on his trip abroad, leaving many in the party and its supporters shocked and bewildered. Reportedly, not only he has gone abroad, Rahul Gandhi also was unreachable.

The absence of Rahul Gandhi at such a crucial moment has disappointed not only loyal party workers but also the loyal journalists, Congress supporters in the media and intelligentsia. The ‘left-liberal’ ecosystem, which often backs the Congress party and the Gandhis, is now fuming against the lack of intent of Rahul Gandhi to rebuild the Congress party that can take on the Hindu nationalist party BJP.

The left-liberals, who saw Prashant Kishor as a ‘guardian angle’ who could give rebirth to the Congress party, now want Rahul Gandhi to quit politics dur to his frequent foreign tours. Vir Sanghvi, one of the loyal supporters of the Congress party in the media, is unhappy over Rahul Gandhi’s absence and the subsequent collapse of the Congress-Prashant Kishor deal.

Speaking to the NDTV, Vir Sanghvi said that Rahul Gandhi should take a break from politics and do others things or travel abroad. As anchor Nidhi Razdan pointed out to Vir Sanghvi that Rahul Gandhi was missing in action at such a crucial time, Sanghvi lamented over Rahul Gandhi’s absence and said that everybody within the Congress agreed that the party under Rahul Gandhi’s leadership would perform even worse in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections compared to the previous general elections.

“You cannot do the same thing again and again and think voters will react differently. Rahul Gandhi keeps saying that power is bad and he is not in politics for power, but why does he hang on? Why is he not willing to let go?” asked Vir Sanghvi, who looked dejected over the fallout of the Prashant Kishor-Congress deal, which according to many ‘left-liberal’ and independent journalists like Sanghvi, would have renewed the Congress party’s political prospects.

The Radia-tapes famed Vir Sanghvi also noted that if Rahul Gandhi likes Congress and wants to travel abroad, he should take a sabbatical for two years and get a PhD.

“Leave the Congress to its devices so that it can prosper,” Vir Sanghvi advised the Gandhi-scion.

Old guards wanted Prashant Kishor to join Congress, Rahul Gandhi supporters were not inclined: Vir Sanghvi

In the show, Vir Sanghvi also revealed that it was not the old guards of the Congress that opposed the induction of Prashant Kishor into the party as believed, but it was the people around Rahul Gandhi. Sanghvi said that the old guards are so desperate that they want someone to take charge of the party.

According to Vir Sanghvi, Rahul Gandhi was not inclined with the idea of Prashant Kishor having a greater role in the Congress party as the poll strategist wanted the lesser role for Rahul Gandhi and replace him with his mother Sonia Gandhi as the face of the party.

Prashant Kishor rejects Congress’s offer to join the party

Earlier on Tuesday, amidst intense speculations of Prashant Kishor joining the Congress party, the poll strategist said he has rejected Congress’ offer to join the party.

In his tweet, Prashant Kishor had said that in his ‘humble opinion’, more than himself, the party needs leadership and collective will to fix the deep-rooted structural problems through transformational reforms.

Congress leader Randeep Surjewala took to Twitter to announce that the party had a discussion with Kishor after he gave a presentation on how to revive the party. Subsequently, Sonia Gandhi, the party president, had constituted an “Empowered Action Group 2024” for the 2024 general elections and also invited him to join the party with a defined role and responsibility. However, Kishor has declined the offer, he said.

Surjewala said that the party appreciates the efforts and suggestions he gave to Congress.

Earlier it was reported that the celebrity poll strategist had given a 600 slide presentation to the party leadership to help them revive the party and save it from oblivion. In the presentation, he suggested that Congress try and push propaganda in the digital space and get Facebook and Twitter influencers onboard along with like-minded media houses, which can be used for the party’s leverage. He had also suggested the party gets standup comedians on board to utilise their channels for propaganda.

‘My mother was vomiting blood, but they refused to admit her’: Delhi man accuses state govt hospital of medical negligence in viral video

On Thursday, a person in Delhi accused the Arvind Kejriwal-led government of not providing proper medical facilities in the state government-run hospitals. He stated that the government-run hospitals in Delhi are exploiting the patients and are not paying proper medical attention to them.

The video of a dreadful incident was shared by Neetu Singh, Spokesperson for BJP Delhi who said that CM Arvind Kejriwal had ruined the lives of citizens in the name of free services. “Look at the condition of Delhi Government’s Sanjay Gandhi Hospital where patients are not getting treatment. Kejriwal has ruined the lives of citizens in the name of free services”, she tweeted on April 28.

The man in the video held the state government responsible for his mother’s death. He said that his mother was severely ill and blood was coming from her mouth. “I brought my mother to the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, Mangolpuri at 4:30 pm yesterday but the doctors here refused to get her admitted. They prescribed some medicines instead and asked us to leave”, he said.

“Today morning, my mother again vomited blood. She was weakened. I immediately brought her back to the hospital but the doctors here declared her dead. Who is responsible for my mother’s death? These doctors should be suspended”, he added in the video. He also could be seen holding the document proving that the state government-run hospital had allegedly refused to get the patient admitted after 4:30 pm.

He accused the hospital of medical negligence and stated that his mother had been killed by the state. “What is there to praise in this hospital? We don’t even get proper medical treatments, no good facilities. Who should be held responsible for my mother’s death- the doctors or the state?”, he pondered.

It is important to note that CM Arvind Kejriwal during the Delhi elections 2020 had guaranteed good healthcare to the citizens and had promised that medical treatment and medicines across all Delhi government hospitals would be free. He had also announced that medical tests including MRI, CT scan, ultrasound, and even PET scan which cost more than Rs 25,000 will be free. Also, recently during the Punjab Assembly elections, he had claimed that AAP would implement the ‘Delhi model’ of healthcare in the state of Punjab.

Fact checker reports however mention that the claims made by Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal are partially true. It states that though the medical treatment is made free across all the state govt run hospitals in Delhi, citizens have to suffer because the government hospitals are often overcrowded.

(Team Opindia tried to verify the authenticity of the video that went viral on April 28 but it remains unclear when and where exactly the video is from).

90 swords and daggers recovered from a car in Dhule of Maharashtra, four arrested

Within a month, Maharashtra has witnessed the second incident of recovering arms in heavy numbers. This time, Maharashtra police have caught as many as 90 swords and daggers in the Dhule district of the northern part of the state. The cache of weapons was being transported from Chittorgarh in Rajasthan in a Scorpio to the Jalna district in Maharashtra. It is notable that Congress is the ruling party in Rajasthan and it is also a partner in the Maha Vikas Aghadi government in Maharashtra.

Dhule district SP Praveen Kumar Patil confirmed this. He said, “Police have recovered a huge quantity of swords from a car near the Songir village in Dhule and arrested four persons. 89 swords and 1 dagger worth Rs 7,13,600 were recovered from the vehicle.” All the accused have been booked by the police under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Arms Act. However, why such a huge arms consignment in Maharashtra, to whom it was supposed to be shipped, and who is behind it, is yet to be revealed. But, the consignment of weapons found in such a large quantity has raised concerns about peace and order in the state.

Police have arrested four accused Mohammed Sharif Mohammad Shafiq (age 35), Sheikh Ilyas Sheikh Latif (age 32), Syed Nai Syed Rahim (age 29), and Kapil Dabhade (age 35) in the case. All four are residents of the Jalna district. Further investigation of the case is on.

It is worth mentioning that amidst the ongoing controversy over azaan and Hanuman Chalisa over loudspeakers in Maharashtra, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray is soon scheduled to hold a public meeting in Aurangabad of Maharashtra. Aurangabad is situated at a distance of 42KM from the Jalna city where these arms were being shipped. This has increased the possibility of untoward incidents.

Earlier, in Pimpri Chinchwad of Maharashtra, police had recovered weapons from the godown of a private courier company in the Dighi area. The weapons were kept in two wooden boxes. 92 swords, 2 daggers, and 9 knives were recovered. The boxes were allegedly sent by Umesh Sood, a resident of Amritsar, to Anil Hoon, a resident of Aurangabad. The police had registered a case against the duo under the IPC and the Arms Act.

‘Brahmin Teri Kabar Khudegi’: Hate slogans surface on BHU campus after Iftar party, furious students burn VC’s effigy

On April 27, students protested against Roza Iftar Party on the campus of Women’s College of Banaras Hindu University. After his photographs surfaced attending the Iftar party, the students raised slogans against the Vice-Chancellor Professor Sudhir Jain. The students took out a protest rally carrying a symbolic effigy and burnt it after reaching VC’s residence.

Notably, this is not the first time VC Professor Jain stirred a controversy. He had informed about Iftar from his official account, which had attracted criticism. On the evening of April 26, when the Iftar party took place, VC, Rector Professor VK Shukla and fasting male and female professors and students opened their Roza. Speaking to OpIndia, students said a discussion on Roza took place that was moderated by Dr Mohammad Afzal Hussain.

The students took selfies with the Rector. Apart from the VC and Rector, Dr Afzal Hussain, Professor Neelam Atri, Acting Principal Professor Rita Singh, Student Dean Professor KK Singh, Chief Proctor Professor BC Kapri, and Dr Divya Kushwaha were present at the party.

The students agitated by the Iftar Party expressed their concerns while talking to OpIndia. They said, “There was no such event like Roza Iftar at BHU for a long time. Suddenly the VC is turning BHU into Jamia, which is not right.” Research student Patanjali Pandey accused the VC of ignoring the interests of the students and the traditions of the University. “Organising such Iftar Party at the campus is condemnable,” the students said and termed the whole program as an initiative to appease Muslims.

The students further added that after the Iftar Party at the campus, anti-Hindu graffiti surfaced on the walls of the campus at various places. The students also provided some photographs of the graffiti where anti-Hindu slogans like “Kashmir to bas jhanki hai, poora Bharat baaki hai” (Kashmir is only the beginning, whole India is still there) and “Brahman Teri kabr khudegi BHU ki dharti par” (Graves of the Brahmins will be dug at BHU campus).

Students who opposed VC’s participation in the Iftar party said, “Former VC Girish Chand Tripathi had started a tradition of sending fruits during Navratri during his tenure. The tradition was stopped, and a new tradition of Iftar was started. It is unacceptable to us. If the VC wants to have Iftar, he can go to AMU or Jamia. He is not needed here.”

The students further added no such Iftar Party had been organised in BHU before. This time Women’s College was chosen so that the students could not go to the college and protest. They added that the practice was objectionable, and they would oppose it. Further protests have been planned over the issue.

On the other hand, the Public Relations Officer of BHU, Dr Rajesh Singh, told OpIndia that Roza Iftar had been a tradition in Women’s College. It included the participation of VC and other officials. Accordingly, an event was organised on Wednesday. He added that Iftar had not been organised for the past two years as the University was closed due to Covid-19. He added as it was a tradition, such controversies should not have erupted over the matter.

Children’s home in Ranchi with links to Harsh Mander tried to conceal a child sexual abuse case, didn’t report to police: Says NCPCR chief

Priyank Kanoongo, the chief of the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR), on Thursday alleged that the office bearers of the children’s home run by an NGO linked to Harsh Mander tried to hide the case of a child sexual abuse by not reporting it to the Police in Ranchi, Jharkhand.

The NCPCR chief, after receiving a complaint on April 26, visited the children’s home in Ranchi to inspect the case of child sexual abuse. He stated that a seven-year-old girl was sexually abused by a security guard in April and that the office bearers of the home had tried to suppress the case by not reporting it to the Police. He added that the children’s home in which the incident took place was not registered under the Juvenile Justice Act and the office bearers of the home were not taking the case seriously. “They simply have dismissed the guard. The home that shelters 52 girls has voluntary links linked to Mander”, he noted.

He also slammed the Jharkhand Police for failing to recognize the offense of child sexual abuse and not registering an FIR in the case. He alleged that the Jharkhand Police was being pressurized and did not allow the NCPCR to complain. “Whose pressure is it? It is shameful that for the last four hours Jharkhand Police is adamant on its opinion of calling the family members to file an FIR even in the cognizable offense of child sexual abuse. It is neither making the case itself nor allowing NCPCR to file a complaint”, Kanoongo tweeted on April 26.

The case of child sexual abuse-

On April 7, a seven-year-old girl residing in the Rainbow Children’s home was sexually abused by a security guard. The Manager of the children’s home run by an NGO named Rainbow Foundation India tried to suppress the matter by not reporting the incident to the Police.

According to the reports, one of the social workers informed the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights about the incident. The NCPCR on April 26 then visited the children’s home in Ranchi, Jharkhand to inspect the case. The said children’s home run by Rainbow Foundation India has voluntary links linked to Harsh Mander.

It is important to note that on February 4 last year, an FIR was registered against Harsh Mander following complaints of child sexual abuse at children’s homes run by his NGO. The NCPCR had taken cognizance of a complaint of child sexual abuse at Umeed Aman Home for Boys which is run by the Aman Biradari Trust founded by Mander. The Commission noted that several instances of sexual abuse of children had taken place within the boys’ home in the years 2012, 2013, and 2016. It also mentioned that the children were made to participate in anti-CAA protests. They were being taught that ‘the government only works for Hindus and keeps fighting in Pakistan’.

In the current case, the NCPCR has demanded the children be shifted to another facility and has expressed concern that other children might also have faced the abuse at the Rainbow Children’s Home which needs attention. It has sought FIR to be registered in the case.
