Bengaluru: Several schools get bomb threats over e-mail, premises searched after evacuation

0

Several schools in Bengaluru got bomb threats on Friday morning, according to reports. The message warning the schools about the planted explosives, according to a senior officer, was sent over the email. Bengaluru City Police ordered the immediate evacuation of the schools, and along with a bomb disposal squad, rushed to the areas to conduct additional searches.

Six schools – Delhi Public School in Sulakunte, Gopalan International School in Mahadevapura, New Academy School in Marathahalli, Ebenezer International School in Electronic City, St Vincent Pallotti School in Hennur, and Indian Public School in Govindapura received the emails with the bomb threat.

According to Vasanth Kumar, inspector Hennur Police Station, Bengaluru, multiple emails were sent to these schools between 11:00 AM and 11:10 AM. As a result of the messages, tension gripped all of the schools, and the buildings were evacuated. The police were called, and they promptly arrived at the schools to verify the authenticity of the emails.

All the students were sent back to their homes and the situation was conveyed to their parents.

The email stated, “A very powerful bomb has been planted in your school, attention is not a joke, this is not a joke, a very powerful bomb has been planted in your school, immediately call the police and sappers, hundreds of lives may suffer, including yours, do not delay, now everything is only in your hands!”

“Investigations are in full swing to understand who is behind this email. We will get to the bottom of things,” City Police Commissioner Kamal Pant said.

The bomb threat in Bengaluru comes on the heels of the Islamic terror organization Al-Qaeda commenting on Karnataka’s hijab controversy on Tuesday. Al Qaeda chief Zawahiri had extended his support to burqa-clad protestor Bibi Muskan Zainab Khan, who was at the center of the hijab row in the state.

After an initial investigation, Police have stated that prima facie, the bomb threat looks like a hoax.

American Airlines announces ‘buses-as-flights’ plan to combat pilot shortage and high fuel prices, netizens remind them, ‘they are just buses’

Amid a reported pilot shortage and high fuel prices, American Airlines has announced a regional plan where connecting flights will be replaced by buses. While the media is calling it fancy names like ‘on-ground alternatives’, or ‘buses-as-flights’, but people on social media are reminding them that buses are, well, just buses, not planes.

As per a report in Airline Weekly, American Airlines has decided to operate buses on the ‘connecting’ routes from Philadelphia to Leigh valley airport in Allentown and the Atlantic City airport in New Jersey. So basically, while the tickets will be sold by the AA as flight tickets, passengers will check-in in Allentown or New Jersey airports and travel to Philadelphia by bus, provided by the airline.

American Airlines has signed a deal with a bus company named Landline for this purpose.

Landline reportedly operates similar bus services in partnership with United Airlines in Denver and Sun Country Airlines in 7 cities around Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The article also notes that key airports do not have rail connectivity to nearby cities and buses are their only option. Darren Betters, director of business development at the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority was quoted in the article stating the obvious, “It works. Buses provide connectivity where it would be tough to provide it by air.”

While the article praises the ‘buses as flights’ business model and explains how it will help passengers, many on social media have pointed out the obvious problem, how come cities are not connected by rail network?

One user recalled how recently China had recently showcased a ‘train that can run on roads’, and people have trolled them saying ‘they are called buses’.

An Indian user wrote, “We call this just a ‘bus’ in India, in some, you can travel lying down flat on your back all the way. Ok on your side if you are a side sleeper.”

Another Twitter user wrote that airlines have spent billions of dollars over decades lobbying against advances in rail travel and the development of a good rail network, and now they are offering buses to passengers in place of planes.

The article mentioned that American Airlines has suspended dozens of flight routes in recent months due to pilot shortages and other issues.

‘Those who do not work and become an obstacle for public work will be transferred’: Sikkim govt creates a new department for lazy employees

Sikkim’s state government has devised a novel approach to dealing with ‘non-performing’ government employees. These employees, whether doctors, engineers, accountants, or general employees, will be transferred to a newly created department where they will have little to do and will be denied the usual perks.

Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang, better known as PS Golay, who has been advocating harsh measures against employees who arrive late for work or skip work, announced earlier this week that non-performing government employees will be transferred to the newly created department.

An order signed by state Chief Secretary S.C Gupta and issued on Monday (4 April) stated that a ‘Directorate of Coordination’ is being established “with immediate effect.” The directorate will report to the state home department and will be staffed by officers from “all organised services, including departmental and technical services of different cadres at all levels.”

Chief Minister stated on Monday at a meeting of entrepreneurs in the state capital Gangtok that non-performing employees and officers, such as engineers, accounts officers, and even the likes of an additional chief secretary who do not work and become an impediment to public work will be transferred to the new directorate. Except for the basic salary, they will be ineligible for any benefits.

Tamang said, “We have plans to create a new department where engineers, accounts officers or even the likes of additional chief secretaries, who do not work and become an obstacle for public work, will be transferred. No official vehicles for them, but only salary. Such employees create hurdles and need to be kept aside so that other efficient employees can be productive.”

“There could be two from a group of 10 employees who could hinder the progress of work. If it is work that needs to be completed in a day, it should be completed in a day. But the same work gets stretched to months, hampering the honest public of Sikkim. The function of bureaucracy is to ease the public’s work and not become an obstacle themselves,” the CM added.

CM urged all officers present at the meeting to perform their duties diligently, clarifying that the government’s proposed action is not a step toward “victimisation.” According to the Chief Minister, non-performing employees create obstacles and should be replaced so that efficient employees can perform productively.

Calcutta High Court directs a CBI probe into ‘murder’ of TMC leader, Bhadu Sheikh, that sparked Birbhum violence. Here is what it said

On Friday (April 8), the Calcutta High Court directed the CBI to take over the probe into the ‘murder’ of TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh, an incident which is believed to have triggered the deadly violence in Birbhum district of West Bengal.

The development comes a day after the court had reserved its verdict on Thursday (April 7) while hearing pleas to transfer the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The matter was heard by a 2-Judge Bench of Justice Rajasrshi Bhardwaj and Chief Justice Prakash Shrivastava.

Additional Solicitor General Y.J Dastoor, who represented the CBI, had submitted that ‘vital evidence’ pertaining to the murder of the TMC leader might have been destroyed due to a delay in ordering the CBI probe. On the contrary, Advocate General SN Mookherjee argued that the West Bengal police had been probing the case.

While examining the preliminary report filed by the CBI as per the court’s directive, the Judges noted that the Birbhum violence was a ‘direct fallout’ of the ‘murder’ of Bhadu Sheikh. The Court observed that the burning of a dozen houses and killing of 8 people in the process was a part of a retaliatory plan, borne out of political rivalry between members of 2 groups in Bogtui village.

“Both the incidents took place within a gap of about 2 hours. Material placed on record prima facie suggests a close relationship and linkage between the two incidents. The incidents are alleged to be the result of political rivalry. The allegation of the applicants that both incidents form part of the common conspiracy and continuous cause of action cannot be ignored,” the Calcutta High Court emphasised.

It stated, “The object of issuing the necessary direction in the suo motu petition is to ensure appropriate action against the person responsible for the incident.”

“On the basis of the material which is available before us, we are of the opinion that the said object can be more appropriately achieved if the incident of murder of Bhadu Sheikh also investigated by the CBI along with the incident of burning of houses and murder of villagers of Bogtui which took place shortly thereafter The second incident prima facie seems to be the fall out of first incident,” the Judges concluded.

While adjourning the matter to May 2, 2022, the Court directed the Central Bureau of Investigation to submit a status report with respect to the investigation in both cases. The Judges reiterated that the investigation would be easier if one agency was to probe both Sheikh’s murder and the incident of Birbhum violence.

Murder of TMC leader and violence in Birbhum

On March 22 night, a group of enraged miscreants set ablaze around 12 homes which resulted in the gruesome death of eight people including women and children in Birbhum’s Rampurhat.

The autopsy report of the burnt bodies showed that the victims were beaten before they were locked in their own homes and set ablaze. The gruesome killings are believed to have been orchestrated to avenge the alleged murder of TMC leader Bhadu Sheikh.

Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had issued a notice to the West Bengal government and the state’s police chief and requested a report within four weeks detailing the steps taken to ensure people’s safety. A TMC block President by the name of Anarul Hossain has been arrested so far.

In the aftermath of the Birbhum violence, Prime Minister Narendra Modi issued a strong message of condemnation and appealed to the State government to bring the perpetrators to justice. On March 25, the Calcutta High Court transferred the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Ukraine: 30 dead and over 100 injured as rockets strike escaping Civilians in Kramatorsk station

30 people were killed and over 100 were injured in a Russian rocket strike on a railway station in east Ukraine today. The busy Kramatorsk station, used by civilians to escape war-torn eastern Ukraine was rocked by two rocket strikes, as per the reports.

Alexander Kamyshin, the head of Ukraine’s railway company wrote on social media, “Two rockets hit the Kramatorsk railway station. People have been hurt. We are clarifying the details.”

“According to operational data, more than 30 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded in the rocket attack on Kramatorsk railway station”, they later added after clarification on the number of casualties.

Regional governor Pavlo Kyrylenko has said that thousands of people were at the train station at the time of the strike as the station is one of the busiest exit points for people looking to escape the war. Eastern Ukraine has seen some of the heaviest fighting ever since Russia started its special military operation in Ukraine, leading to the displacement of millions of civilians.

After the attack, Ukraine’s president Volodymyr Zelensky blamed Russia for the rocket attack on the railway station. In an Instagram post after the attack, he said, “The occupiers hit the Kramatorsk railway station with a Point-U, where thousands of peaceful Ukrainians were waiting to be evacuated. About 30 people died, about 100 people were injured to varying degrees.”

Russia is yet to comment on the rocket attack and Ukraine’s accusations. Russia has denied targeting civilians throughout the course of this war in the region.

From protest against French President Macron to support for Triple Talaq: Who is Arif Masood, Congress leader who attacked his own party for “Hindu appeasement”

Congress has been accused of following many faulty policies and practices during the past few years, but never have they faced accusations of doing “Hindu appeasement”. However, this is the charge they face now, and it comes from one of their own leaders, Bhopal MLA Arif Masood.

When Kamal Nath ordered Congress workers in Madhya Pradesh to celebrate the Hindu festivals of Ram Navami and Hanuman Jayanti, Arif Masood embarrassed the party by criticizing this decision openly. Masood questioned why the party is not issuing such orders for festivals from other religions and said that this is against the “secular’ nature of the party.

Who is Arif Masood

One of only 2 Muslim MLAs in the Madhya Pradesh assembly, Arif Masood is a member of the legislative assembly from Bhopal Madhya seat in Madhya Pradesh. After starting his career in Congress party, Masood switched to Samajwadi Party in 2003. However, he returned to Congress after 2007 and started working in the party’s minority cell.

A troubled history with Congress leadership

This is not the first time that Arif Masood has embarrassed Madhya Pradesh Congress leadership in public. He has had a history of speaking or acting in ways that have left the party red-faced on multiple occasions.

In 2001, as district president of the Youth Congress, Arif Masood led a mob and attacked a cinema hall screening Gadar- Ek Prem Katha. A police constable was grievously injured and dozens received minor wounds. Subsequently, he was expelled from the party as the violence in the state reflected extremely poorly on the Digvijay Singh-led Congress government of the time.

Even after returning to the Congress fold, Masood did not stop going against the leadership’s decisions. When the law against Triple Talaq was under discussion, senior Congress leaders avoided taking an open stand in favour of Triple Talaq, Masood was very vocal in his support for the practice.

Masood was back at it again in 2019, now as an elected MLA from Bhopal Central. When then-Chief Minister Kamal Nath laid the foundation stone of the Bhopal Metro and announced that it will be named after Raja Bhoj, Masood asked Kamal Nath from the same stage to let it remain Bhopal Metro.

Protests against French President Macron

In the aftermath of the Samuel Paty beheading, French President Emmanuel Macron cracked down on the radical elements in France. However, his actions were termed against Muslims and there were large protests against Macron in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and some parts of India. One such protest was in Bhopal and was led by Arif Masood.

Masood led a crowd of thousands to Bhopal’s historic Iqbal Maidan shouting slogans against France and President Macron.

Meta removes a network of Russian accounts from Facebook for allegedly mass reporting Ukrainian accounts

On Thursday, Facebook parent Meta Platforms Inc said that it had removed a network in Russia for allegedly abusing its tools to report and suspend accounts in Ukraine and in Russia over possible policy violations on the platform.

According to the reports, Meta claimed that a Belarus-based group attempted to compromise the Facebook accounts of Ukrainian military personnel. Meta said that they have also removed hacking campaigns, influence networks and scam operations amidst the ongoing war in Ukraine and added that it was reviewing additional steps to address misinformation from Russian government pages.

A group of hackers purportedly having links with the Belarusian government broke into the Facebook accounts of Ukrainian military officials and posted videos calling on the Ukrainian army to surrender. Meta said the posts appeared as if they were coming from legitimate account owners.

The hacking campaign was unleashed by a person known as “Ghostwriter,” said Meta in its release.

“We removed a network of about 200 accounts operated from Russia. The individuals behind it coordinated to falsely report people for various violations, including hate speech, bullying and inauthenticity, in an attempt to have them and their posts removed from Facebook,” said the social media giant.

Reportedly, the Russian hackers targeted people in Ukraine and Russia, and the network also reported users in Israel, the US, and Poland.

The company said that the people are reporting the accounts relied on fake, authentic, and duplicate accounts to submit thousands of complaints against their targets through Meta’s abuse reporting tools.

“Many of this network’s accounts were detected and disabled by our automated systems,” said Meta.

Russia had banned Facebook, Google, accused them of spreading misinformation

This comes a month after Russia had announced that it was banning Facebook in the country after the tech giant had enforced restrictions on Russian media on its platform. The Kremlin had cracked down on tech companies, including Twitter, over their arbitrary restriction of Russian state media RT and Sputnik regulations.

Strangely, prior to this, Meta Platforms Inc. had eased its hate speech policy to allow Facebook and Instagram users in some countries to call for violence against Russians and Russian soldiers. Meta Inc. has made temporary changes to its hate speech policy to allow users to post content that calls for violence, including a call for death to Russian President Vladimir Putin or Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.

Later, Russia had banned Meta, calling it an extremist organisation and also banned Google News for spreading misinformation.

Haryana: 182 Kashmiri Pandit families get land ownership papers after 30 years, under CM Khattar’s ‘Mission Vachanpurti’

On Thursday 7th April 2022, Haryana’s chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar started Mission Vachanpurti under which Kashmiri Pandit families will be getting the ownership of the lands they bought in sector 2 of Bahadurgarh in Jhajjar district of Haryana during the years 1991 to 1993. This ends the three-decade-long wait of these families.

The plots will now be officially put under the names of 182 families. In a state-level program held on Thursday, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar made this historic announcement and handed over the allotment letters of the plots to these families.

On this occasion, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar said, “Today is a historic day in the history of Haryana. The wait for families of Kashmiri Pandits who bought land during the Congress regime between 1991 and 1993 is finally over. In these 30 years, they had almost lost hope of getting the ownership rights to their land. A few amendments were made in the year 1997 and the plots were allotted to a few Kashmiri Pandit families. But those who could not get their plots at that time had to wait for three decades.

According to a report by Live Hindustan, about three decades ago, 209 families had purchased a total of 10 acres of land in Sector 2 of Bahadurgarh. However, when the Haryana Urban Local Development Authorities (HUDA) acquired land to develop Sector-2, the land of Kashmiri Pandits also went into it. They demanded that their land be freed from the acquisition process.

In 1997, the authorities agreed to release 12 acres of land, as it was not possible to give all 209 families a plot of land out of just 10 acres, which they had originally purchased. However, the officials asked the pandits to get the relevant land mutation done in favour of HUDA. It could not be relocated due to revenue issues. They waited for their plots. Plots were allotted to 27 families in 2016. The other 182 families were still waiting.

Two months ago, a delegation of Kashmiri Pandits met Ajit Balaji Joshi, chief administrator of the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA). He had asked Bahadurgarh Estate Officer Shweta Suhag to look into the matter. Suhag removed all the technical hurdles and paved the way for the allotment of plots to Kashmiri Pandits there.

Manohar Lal Khattar said, “Allotment letters have been distributed to 182 families today. Apart from this number, some families have already got their plots. Thus, through this entire process, the promises made to these 209 families have been fulfilled.”

Slamming the opposition for the false claims, Manohar Lal Khattar said, “The ‘Mission Vachanpurti’ is a befitting reply to the opposition’s claims, which has been alleging that the present state government has stopped financial assistance of Rs 5,000 to Kashmiri Pandit families in the state. I would like to clarify that Congress had started a scheme to give Rs 5,000 and made rules that a family would get the said amount for a period of five years. According to our official figures, only one family is getting this assistance right now, as it has not yet completed a five-year term.”

The CM alleged that the opposition is now making baseless statements as it is not able to digest the success of the film ‘The Kashmir Files’, based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley.

‘You are Kaafirs for betraying Islam and supporting the BJP’: Locals attack a Muslim family for backing BJP in Uttarakhand assembly polls

A Muslim family of Uttarakhand’s Rudrapur was at the receiving end of their neighbours’ ire for having extended their support to the BJP in the assembly elections that were held earlier this year. According to a report published in News 18, a Muslim family, including children, were severely injured by locals, who accused the family of being “Kaafir” and “betraying Islam” for supporting the BJP in Uttarakhand assembly elections.

The deadly attack against the Muslim family left 4 injured, including a girl who was seriously wounded. 6 people have been booked in the case, five of whom have been already identified by the police. The police have launched an investigation to determine the sixth culprit responsible for attacking the family.

The matter pertains to Udham Singh Nagar of Rudrapur, where a Muslim family was attacked by locals for being associated with the BJP. The victim, Anees Mian Guddu, a resident of ward no.20 Bhoorbangla, is an office-bearer of the BJP. During the assembly elections, his family had strongly backed the BJP candidate, exhorting members of the Muslim community in their area to vote for the BJP. Since then, there is a simmering discontent among the Muslim community against Mian and his family.

This resentment manifested on the evening of April 5, when Mian was attacked by locals while he was in his shop. Parveen Jahan, Mian’s wife, in her statement to the police told that a bunch of fanatic locals accosted her and her husband on the evening of April 5 when the duo was in their shop.

According to Jahan, the mob included one Yunus, a resident of the same locality where the victims lived. His wife Reshma, Yunus’ brother Irfan, Shakeel and his wife Baby were among those who visited their shop and started abusing them. They were also carrying knives and sticks, Jahan told the police. They reportedly called Mian a “Kaafir” and accused him of betraying Islam by supporting the BJP. Jahan said Yunus attacked her with a knife while her husband was thrashed by others with sticks. The assailants also snatched her earrings and fled away, Jahan said as per a report published by News 18.

Following the attack, when Jahan had gone to a nearby hospital to tend to her injuries, her son and daughter were alone in their house. During this time, the attackers barged into their house and told the children that their “parents were taught a lesson” and now it was “their turn”.

Brimming with the rage to seek vengeance from a family that supported the BJP, the attackers did not spare innocent children from their fury. The assailants unleashed a relentless spate of violence against the siblings, leaving the girl child seriously injured. Parveen says after the attack when she had decided to file a police complaint against the accused, the locals in her neighbourhood tried stopping her from visiting the police station.

However, Parveen went to the police station and filed a complaint against her assailants. SSI Satish Kapri said that a case has been filed against Yunus, his wife Reshma, Irfan, Shakeel and his wife Baby along with an unknown person under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including rioting and assault. Legal action has been initiated against the accused, the police informed.

UP: Muslim woman was thrown out of her house for voting for the BJP

This is not the first time that a Muslim has been attacked for having sided with the BJP. In March 2022, a Muslim woman was thrown out of the house by her in-laws for allegedly voting in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls. She had voted for BJP for the work it has done, including the law against Triple Talaq and free rations to the poor.

The victim, identified as Uzma, had gotten married to Taslim Ansari in January 2021. It was a love marriage. Uzma is the daughter of one Tahir Ansari, a resident of Ezaz Nagar Ghautia colony. In a statement, she said, “I voted for BJP that has irked my husband’s uncle Tayyab. I voted for BJP because they brought a law against Triple Talaq. My family is very poor. My father is a labourer. We are five sisters. The government also provided us ration.”

She said he got irked by her statement and told her to save herself from Triple Talaq. She claimed they were living happily separated from her father-in-law and mother-in-law. “My husband is with his uncle on the matter. He is not supporting me. But I do not have any issues with my husband,” she added. When asked if her husband threw her out, she said, “Yes, he threw me out and threatened to divorce me. He has not given me a divorce but threatened and challenged me to do whatever I can to save myself from Triple Talaq.”

Delhi Police arrest one Babu Wasim who had supplied weapons to Shahrukh Pathan during anti-Hindu Delhi riots in 2020

On Friday, the Delhi Police Special Cell disclosed that it had apprehended absconding weapons dealer Babu Wasim, who had provided weapons to Delhi riots accused Mohammad Shahrukh Khan alias Pathan. He also acknowledged to authorities that he supplied the pistol flashed by Pathan during the anti-Hindu Delhi riots in February 2020.

Babu Wasim (34), a Meerut resident, was detained at a park in Tahirpur, Delhi, near the Rajiv Gandhi Hospital. Police captured him carrying a semi-automatic pistol and five live cartridges.

Babu Wasim, according to information gathered by the Special Cell of Delhi Police, was a regular visitor to the Trans-Yamuna area of Delhi-NCR and other neighbouring parts of western Uttar Pradesh. The team then spent four months gathering information in order to pinpoint the hiding spots. Over the preceding decade, the accused admitted to authorities that he had provided firearms and ammunition to a number of gangsters and criminals in western Uttar Pradesh and the Delhi-NCR, including members of Irfan alias Chhainu Pehlwan’s gang. According to officials, Wasim provided weapons to more than 250 criminals, based on their assessments.

In addition, Babu Wasim faces seven outstanding criminal charges in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, including contract killings, shootouts terminating in murder, attempted murder, assault on police, and arms smuggling. Wasim and his friends reportedly murdered one Veenu Pandit at the behest of the deceased’s business partners in a Geeta Colony case five years ago.

Delhi anti-Hindu riots

Under the guise of anti-CAA protests, anti-Hindu riots erupted in Northeast Delhi in February 2020. As a result of the violence, more than 53 people were murdered, over 200 were wounded, and 400 were displaced. Muslim mobs stormed and set fire to homes, shops, and temples.

During the riots, photographs and footage of Shahrukh flashing a pistol at Delhi Police Head Constable Deepak Dahiya became viral on social media. Babu Wasim reportedly fled in order to avoid arrest in the cases after the photographs and recordings were made public. On March 16, 2021, the court pronounced him an offender.

Shahrukh fired two rounds before getting into a heated argument with a police officer and fleeing during the riots. He was arrested on March 3, 2020, and is facing charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Arms Act, including rioting with a hazardous weapon, attempting to murder, assaulting, and impeding the performance of public officials’ duties.
