Shanghai, China, is currently under indefinite lockdown due to a surge in Covid-19 cases. As per reports, there were 20,000 cases reported on Thursday in the biggest city in China. BBC’s report suggested the residents are running out of food. On Wednesday, the city started another round of mandatory mass testing to isolate every case. The lockdown is now on its twentieth day, and there are no signs of any relaxation so far.

China is known for suppressing any voice being raised against the communist administration by its people. Technologically advanced dragon is now using tech toys to keep a check on its citizens. Several videos have emerged on social media platforms that show drones and robotic dogs being used for announcements and directing citizens to stay inside.

Alice Su, Senior China correspondent for The Economist, shared a video on her Twitter account. In the video, a drone could be seen making an announcement directing people not to open windows and sing. Su wrote, “Shanghai residents go to their balconies to sing & protest lack of supplies. A drone appears: ‘Please comply w covid restrictions. Control your soul’s desire for freedom. Do not open the window or sing’.”

Su added the source of the video linked to a Chinese social media platform Weibo account. The user had posted the video with text that roughly translated to “Don’t sing collectively on the balcony. Residents of Songjiang Jiuting Homeland sang a few times. Directly, the drone came and said please control the soul’s desire for freedom.” (Chinese translated using Google Translate).

In another video shared by Eric Frigi-Ding, co-founder of The World Health Network. In the video, a robot dog with a megaphone tapped on its back was roaming the streets of Shanghai. Eric wrote that health announcements were being made using the megaphone.

Another video of a similar Robot dog was shared by Freelance Journalist James Jackson. He wrote, “Dog robots announce that nobody is allowed to leave the house. Drones fly around, come right up to you when they spot you outside and tell you to go back inside.”

There are 26 million official residents in Shanghai. The city has come to a halt due to Covid restrictions. China which has alleged to have controlled Covid in the initial stages when the pandemic first his, has been struggling with the new variants of the Wuhan virus. The large population of the city is struggling to get food. On March 30, Eric had shared another video where people were seen fighting for groceries.

In another video from April 1, truckers who operate the delivery trucks were allegedly sealed into their trucks by police tape. Edric wrote, “No exiting the truck to eat, sleep, or even use the bathroom.” It was done to “ensure” timely deliveries.

A Twitter user E Justin shared a video in which a dog owner used a long leash or rope to put down the dog from the building and pull it back.

Global effects of Shanghai lockdown

Notably, Shanghai is the economic hub of China, the global companies, including Tesla, are facing challenges. Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai is its most productive plant, and it has been shut for over a week.

On Thursday, the Yogi Adityanath led Uttar Pradesh government took action against an illegal petrol pump owned by Bhojipura SP MLA Shahjil Islam. The Bareilly Development Authority (BDA) ran a bulldozer on SP MLA’s petrol pump located at CB ganj area in Bareilly to demolish it.

The spokesperson of BJP for Uttar Pradesh Prashant Umrao tweeted a video of the petrol pump being demolished and said that the station was constructed without prior approval. “The SP MLA from Bhojipura in Bareilly, Shahjil Islam, who had threatened Yogi Ji, saw the demolition of his illegal petrol pump that was constructed without prior approval”, he captioned the video.

According to the reports, the Bareilly Development Authority confirmed the illegality of the petrol pump and directed its demolition. The ceiling of the station was razed to the ground leaving only the machines in operative condition. The heavy Police force and PAC personnel were deployed for security purposes at the location.

It is important to note that Samajwadi Party’s MLA Shazil Islam April 3 had issued threats to the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh and CM Yogi Aditynath, the video of which went viral over social media. He had said that as there are more SP MLAs in the assembly than earlier, they would fire bullets for every word said by Yogi Adityanath.

“Akhilesh Yadav declared that we the members of the Samajwadi Party will fight the government both in the assembly house and on the streets. There is no need for us to panic. Gone are the days when he (Yogi Adityanath) used to behave like a dictator. There is a strong opposition present in Uttar Pradesh now. Our beloved leader, the fearless panther Akhilesh Yadav is with us. So, if he says a word from his mouth, our guns will fire the bullets and not the smoke. That’s what I want to say”, he had said.

The UP Police had then booked Islam, the party’s district unit vice president Sanjeev Kumar Saxena and some other party leaders for threatening Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and making provocative statements against him. The action against the SP leaders was taken based on a complaint filed by Anuj Verma, the district in charge of Hindu Yuva Vahini.

Shazil Islam is an MLA from the Bhojipura assembly seat in the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh. Bhojipura MLA Shazil Islam’s family has always been active in politics. His father Islam Sabir and grandfather Ashfaq Ahmed were also MLAs. Shazil Islam had won the first assembly election in 2002 as an independent candidate. He is counted among the top SP leaders of western Uttar Pradesh.

The keys to the treasure room inside the 12th century Shri Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha have been missing for years, and nobody knows how. In April 2018, the then district collector of Puri, who is the official administrator of the keys, stated that the keys are nowhere to be found. A political storm soon followed. But after 4 years, little has been accomplished to locate the keys or give any satisfactory answers to the devotees.

What is the Ratna Bhandar (treasure room)

Lord Jagannath owns a lot of gold, silver and precious jewels donated by devotees and granted by kings over the centuries. Most of the jewellery and adornments of the three deities of the Jagannath Temple are kept in the ‘Ratna Bhandar’ of the ancient temple. The Ratna Bhandar comprises of 2 chambers. The outer chamber has 3 rooms and it stores the jewels and ornaments that the three deities are adorned with. The outer chamber is regularly opened and ornaments are taken out by the priests on the occasion of festivals. The outer chamber has three keys.

One key remains with the Puri king, the Gajapati Maharaj, one key remains with the temple administration officials (government), and one key is kept by the ‘Bhandar Mekap’ the temple priest who is the in charge of the treasury.

In 2018, there were concerns regarding the safety and durability of the inner chamber of the treasure room. The inner chamber has not been opened in decades. When cracks were noticed on the outer wall and repair work was needed, Puri district collected stated that the keys to the inner chamber were nowhere to be found.

The inner chamber reportedly needs a set of 3 keys to be opened. Mystery and myth surround the inner secret chamber. As per a report in the Times of India, the inner chamber was last opened in 1964. There are 3 doors that need 3 keys to open. The inner chamber reportedly has over 100 kg of gold jewellery, silver utensils and gold and silver coins.

As per reports, the inventory of the jewels of Lord Jagannath was last done in 1978.

Hissing sounds, doom and disaster

Reports say that in 1985, the Archaeological Survey of India had tried to open the inner chamber of the Jagannath Temple to carry out some repair work. However, only 2 of the three locked doors could be opened. there are some accounts claiming that strange hissing sounds were heard after the second door was opened and the attempt was abandoned.

The priests and servitors of the temple, whose positions are hereditary, going back several generations since the temple was first established, believe that opening the inner chamber will unleash doom and disaster. There are a lot of beliefs and myths surrounding the Ratna Bhandar.

Inquiry commission ordered by CM Naveen Patnaik

Months after the Ratna Bhandar keys were first reported missing by the district collector, Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik had ordered an inquiry commission headed by justice Raghubir Das to probe into the matter and find persons accountable. The matter had reached the Supreme Court too amid the political mudslinging. On December 18, the Raghubir Das commission finally submitted a 324-page report to the government.

For some reason, the Odisha government has not made the report public.

On June 13, 2018, days after the Supreme Court issued a set of directions to the government of Odisha over allegations of mismanagement of temple funds, the district collector Arvind Agarwal had again stated that they have found a sealed envelope with “Duplicate keys of Ratna Bhandar’ marked on it, in a strongbox in the district records room. The district collector’s office had stated that there were several keys inside the sealed envelope and the envelope would be handed over to the temple administration.

‘No plan to take inventory or conduct an audit’, govt said

The SJTA had reportedly later told the media that they had ‘inspected’ the inner chamber from outside because they did not feel the need to enter it. The issue has been controversial in Odisha politics with several citizen groups alleging that the jewels of Lord Jagannath have been looted or sold off in collusion with top government officials and temple administration. The Odisha government has not given any clear answers on the issue.

In November 2019, state law minister Pratap Jena told the Odisha assembly that the government has no plans to either open or audit the temple jewels kept in the Ratna Bhandar. He even assured that no ornaments or jewels of the deities have been stolen and all the treasure is ‘safe’. He had also informed the assembly that as per the last inventory, the inner chamber had over 12,800 tolas of gold jewellery, and 236 pieces of silver ornaments with precious stones attached, apart from other articles weighting over 18,000 tolas (One tola of gold roughly equals to 11.66 grams).

The Jagannath Temple Act (1960) of the Odisha government states that the Ratna Bhandar should be audited every 3 years. But no assessment has been done, no inventory has been taken after 1978.

‘Keys missing since 1970’, says RTI reply

The government’s silence over the Ratna Bhandar issue got a murkier twist in 2021 when an RTI reply revealed that the keys to the inner chamber of the Ratna Bhandar have been missing since 1970. This immediately cast doubts over the authenticity of the 1978 audit and the claims of the chamber being opened in 1985.

As per reports, the reply to the RTI query filed by one Dilip Baral from Odisha had stated that when the district treasury office had informed the then collector Arvind Agarwal about the missing keys on April 4, 2018, they had stated that there were no records of the Ratna Bhandar keys being kept in the treasury since 1970. Agarwal had reportedly informed this to the temple management committee too.

This revelation meant that when the 17-member team said that they saw inside the inner chamber through the window and there was no need to open the chamber, the government and temple administration was already aware that the keys were not there. However, the Odisha government has not clarified further on the issue. The contents of the judicial probe report are yet to be made available to the public too.

In a shocking incident in Anand of Gujarat, a Congress MLA was caught with mobile at the exam centre when he was at the exam centre to appear for his MA examinations. Graduate and post-graduate level exams of the Sardar Patel University of Vallabh Vidyanagar in Anand started on Monday 4th April 2022. The Congress MLA from Mahudha Indrajitsinh Parmar, who was appearing for the MA exam at an examination centre in Anand on 5th April 2022 became a topic of discussion among the students when news spread that he was caught with a mobile phone at the examination centre. However, this was defended by saying that the MLA arrived late at the examination center, and had left a mobile phone in his pocket.

According to a report by GSTV, the examinations of the fourth and sixth semesters of the graduate level as well as the third and fourth semesters of the post-graduate level of Sardar Patel university began on Monday. Examination centers were allotted to different colleges under the university. One such centre was allotted to PM Patel College situated near the new bus station in Anand city. Indrajitsinh Parmar who is a Congress MLA from the Mahudha constituency came to this examination centre on Tuesday in the morning to appear for the MA examination.

A total of two copying cases were reported on Tuesday. PM Patel College in Anand and BJVM College in Vidyanagar are the two examination centers where these copying cases were reported.

‘No copying case against me’: MLA

According to reports, Mahudha Congress MLA Inderjitsinh Parmar was contacted telephonically to know more from him in this regard. He claimed that he had an MA examination at that centre on Tuesday 5th April 2022 and as he reached the centre late, he forgot that his mobile was left in his pocket in a hurry. He also said that when the invigilator in the examination hall noticed this, at that time the mobile was immediately put outside and there was no copy case against him.

‘I’m unaware of the incident’: In-charge chancellor

Niranjan Patel, the in-charge chancellor of the Sardar Patel university, said that he was not aware of any cheating case registered against the Congress MLA. He said that action will be taken against concerned people by the examination department.

After the Punjab Assembly building in Pakistan was locked and sealed off with barbed wires amidst all the political drama in the country, the opposition lawmakers, led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, held a session of their own at a hotel to elect a new Punjab chief minister. This comes after the opposition lawmakers of the National Assembly had ‘elected’ a new Prime Minister after the assembly session was prorogued by the speaker on Sunday.

PML-N Vice-President Maryam Nawaz on Wednesday announced that her cousin Hamza Shahbaz was “elected” as the Punjab chief minister at a session held in a private hotel in Lahore.

The legitimacy of the election is at stake as the session was held outside the Punjab Assembly and was attended only by opposition lawmakers. Punjab Assembly speaker Parvez Elahi and Deputy Speaker Sardar Dost Muhammad Mazari were not present during the ‘assembly session’ called by PML-N lawmakers. Interestingly, the Punjab Assembly secretariat has not issued any notifications regarding the session or venue change or the so-called election that elected Hamza as the chief minister of Punjab.

The session was instead presided over by PPP MPA Shazia Abid. Abid claimed that she was appointed to the panel of chairmen for the 40th session of the Punjab Assembly on April 3.

According to the Rules of Procedure of the Provincial Assembly of the Punjab 1997, a member of the panel of chairmen can preside over the session in the absence of the speaker and the deputy speaker. Punjab Assembly Secretary Muhammad Khan Bhatti confirmed her presence on the panel on April 2.

This comes after the joint opposition in Pakistan led by PPP and PML-N had held a mock session inside the National Assembly on Sunday after Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri ended up the actual session.

In an unexpected action following the decision of the Deputy Speaker of the national assembly to dismiss the no-confidence motion against the Imran Khan govt and suspend the session, the opposition resumed the session of the assembly in protest of the deputy speaker’s decision and elected Shahbaz Sharif as the new Prime Minister.

The opposition had appointed Ayaz Sadiq as the speaker of the National Assembly, who resumed the no-confidence vote against the incumbent government led by Imran khan. Sherry Rehman, who is a member of the assembly, had tweeted a video stating that a total of 197 members voted for the motion.

The opposition MPs remained in the house after the deputy speaker had dismissed the no-confidence motion, and the session was prorogued. Then, PML(N) MP Ayaz Sadiq occupied the speaker’s chair and announced business resumption in the house. He reactivated the no-confidence motion dismissed by the deputy speaker and put it to vote, which was voted in favour of the motion as the ruling party MPs had already left the house.

After that, Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) chief Shahbaz Sharif, the brother of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, was ‘elected’ as the house leader and was declared the Prime Minister. It may be noted that the Pakistani president has already dissolved the national assembly on the advice of PM Imran Khan, and fresh elections will be called soon.

Last week, Uttar Pradesh Minority Affairs Minister Dharampal Singh said that the Waqf board properties are illegally possessed by mafias (goons) and that the government would run bulldozers to reclaim the encroached waqf properties in the state. “The Waqf Board lands are occupied by the mafias. The government will work to free the lands and use them for the welfare of minorities”, he said at the Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI) on April 2.

Singh also commented on the education provided by the Madarsas in Uttar Pradesh. He directed the Madarsas to provide education that inspires nationalism instead of terrorism and said that only those Madarsas will be allowed to operate which stop glorifying the tales of terrorists. “Nationalism should be taught in Madarsas and not terrorism. UP Govt 2.0 will emphasize commercial education”, Singh said while talking to the media.

“Madarsas are an integral component of India’s education system. A primary reason is that historically, the country’s Muslim population has been disproportionately disadvantaged in education. There is lack of scientific and secular subjects in the curriculum and graduates find it difficult to find employment”, Singh stated.

Dharampal Singh also added that the madrasa education syllabus in the state will be based on the Centre’s New Education Policy. Singh, who won the last assembly elections from the Aonla seat in Bareilly said that the madrasa education syllabus will be changed and the students will be imparted commercial education.

Earlier, Karnataka chief minister Basavaraj Bommai’s political secretary and MLA MP Renukacharya had also said that he would urge the Chief Minister to ban madrasas as they are creating anti-national elements. “Madrasas teach provocative lessons to young minds and they become anti-national elements in the future. So we don’t need such institutes. Let Muslim students study in regular schools as they are also children of Indians or else madrasas must teach the regular syllabus”, he had said.

Meanwhile, Dharampal Singh also said that the government had planned to build gaushalas (cowsheds) in each of the municipalities across the state to protect cows. “A major cow shed will be made in every municipality of the state. The cows in the shelter will not roam free. Cows of superior breeds with high milk yield will also be kept in cow shelters,” Singh said.

He said that the gaushalas will be financially enriched so that there would be no need for external financial help for their management. “The gaushalas will be maintained through the income earned by the sale of cow milk and cow dung and other related products”, he noted. Dharampal Singh won the last assembly elections from the Aonla seat in Bareilly. Along with the Minority Affairs department Singh also holds the portfolio of Uttar Pradesh’s Animal Husbandry department.

As the investigations agencies are digging deeper into Gorakhpur Temple attacker Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi’s life, more evidence of the incident being a planned attack are surfacing.

As per reports, a top UP Police official said ATS had raided his house on Saturday, a day before the attack, but he was missing. Abbasi’s father also confirmed that ATS had visited looking for Abbasi. The officer said Abbasi planned the attack in haste after learning about the ATS raid at his house.

On March 31, central investigating agencies had informed ATS about a list of 16 people who were plotting an attack on Gorakhnath Temple, and Abbasi’s name was on the list. Upon receiving the report, two ATS officers had visited his place, but by then, he had gone missing.

Aide arrested from Saharanpur

Following Abbasi’s arrest, ATS carried out several raids in at least six districts across the state. A number of suspects were detained who were in contact with Abbasi. A suspicious youth from Chhutmalpur, Saharanpur, was arrested by ATS on Tuesday night. Identified as Abdul Rehman, he runs a grocery shop in the Muslim colony of Chhutmalpur. Reports suggest Rehman had accompanied Abbasi to Nepal. They both were in touch with terror groups based out of Syria.

Two people have been detailed, two from Sambhal, and eight from other cities, including Deoband, Kanpur, Lucknow, Noida, and Shamli. Currently, around 40 more people are under the ATS radar connected to the case. These people were in contact with Abbasi over the phone and through WhatsApp groups.

Abbasi sent lakhs to ISIS

Another shocking revelation made during the investigation was that Abbasi had sent lakhs of rupees to bank accounts linked to ISIS. According to a top official, investigating agencies are looking into its financial dealings with Abbasi. He has accounts in ICICI Bank, IDFC First Bank, and Platinum Federal Bank, among others, reported Republic.

Abbasi’s mentior is from the US

During the interrogation, it was revealed that Abbasi’s mentor was an American identified as Imam Anwar al-Halaki, who originally hails from Yemen. Abbasi was highly influenced by banned Islamic preacher Zakir Naik as well.

Some documents recovered from Abbasi revealed a link to Jamnagar. Gujarat ATS would be interrogating him as well in Lucknow.

Gorakhnath Temple Attack

On April 3, a man identified as Ahmad Murtaza Abbasi initiated an attack on Gorakhnath Temple in Uttar Pradesh. The incident took place just a day before UP CM Yogi Adityanath was scheduled to visit the temple. Abbasi’s family claimed he was mentally unstable, but the claims were refuted by Police and doctors who treated him after the attack.

On April 6, Sikh activist Puneet Sahani shared a Twitter Spaces recording where Khalistani elements could be heard plotting his murder. In a tweet, Sahani said, “Unable to deal intellectually Khalistanis r declaring me enemy of religion in diaspora gurudwaras and plotting murder online. Hear @utf8tty ‘I’ve 2 private investigators behind PuneetSahani, will perforate him the day we find address’.”

The Twitter user utf8tty (Name mentioned as ‘Eintmaar’ that means ‘someone who throws bricks’) that Sahani tagged was suspended on April 7. In the cached version of his profile, the last tweet read, “The sister with rainbow turban got scared. I haven’t even found the address yet.”

Content of the clip shared by Sahani

The person speaking in the clip has the same Display Picture (DP) and name as Twitter handle utf8tty. The person says, “They do not know who I am. Listen to me. I have hired two private investigators to find the whereabouts of Puneet Sahani. I will perforate him the day we find the address. These people are nothing in front of us.”

Who is Puneet Sahani

Puneet Sahani is a Sikh activist who coordinates the content on Sikhs for Enlightenment Values Association (SEVA). Sahani is on a mission to highlight the ‘real Sikh history’. He has actively criticized the Khalistan movement and its sympathizers, making him one of the prime targets of the Khalistani elements.

Sahani has extensive knowledge of Sikh history and being fluent in Punjabi, he has become an ‘enemy within’ for the Khalistanis. His personal account and SEVA’s Twitter account have been targeted with mass reporting in the past.

Khalistanis ruthlessly target dissent

Khalistani supporters have a long history of suppressing dissent. In January, OpIndia had reported how Khalistanis have been using the app Club House for plotting against Hindus. On Wednesday, April 6, the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education warned that strict penal action would be taken against those students who are found writing Mamata Banerjee’s genocidal election slogan- ‘Khela Hobe’ in their answer sheets.

The development came after examiners discovered that a section of Class 10 students who had appeared for the Madhyamik examination last month, had written ‘Khela Hobe’ – which became a war cry for Trinamool Congress goons to loot, maim, slaughter, and rape the rival BJP workers, on their answer papers. The Class 10 exams for the West Bengal board were conducted last month.

The council has warned the students appearing for the ongoing Class 12 board exams, known as the Uchcha Madhyamik examinations or as the Higher Secondary examinations for class 12 in the state, not to indulge in the same. It said that severe action would be taken against those students found writing political messages or drawings on the answer sheets.

WBCHSE President Chiranjib Bhattacharya told PTI on Wednesday that examiners have been told not to evaluate such exam papers because those who do so will face penalties.

Furthermore, he informed that a high-powered committee formed by the Council will take a decision on the quantum of the punishment.

Bhattacharya also said that writing political slogans, campaigns, or controversial issues that violate the rules and disregard the WBCHSE will invite strict action.

In response, educationist Nrisingha Prasad Bhaduri, speaking to news agency PTI, welcomed the decision. “No ruling party should politicise the education sector and influence impressionable minds,” Bhaduri said.

‘Khela Hobe’ and the weaponisation of political violence

‘Khela Hobe’, the genocidal election slogan was coined by none other than West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee during the state elections last year. Initially, the slogan appeared as a harmless jibe against the opposition but soon started to showcase its true colours. TMC members made a wall painting in Bengal wherein Mamata Banerjee was seen hitting PM Modi’s head instead of a football. During her election rallies, the West Bengal Chief Minister continued to provoke her party workers to retaliate against the central armed forces and BJP workers. Several instances of violence were thus reported during the various stages of polling and have continued ever since.

Several BJP workers have lost their lives in the post-poll violence that ensued following the victory of the TMC party in the assembly elections.

The violence unleashed against them forced hundreds of BJP party workers and supporters to flee their villages along with their families. They crossed over to Assam where they have been provided temporary shelter under the supervision of minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. It is not just the BJP but even CPI(M) which has accused the TMC of killing its workers. Reports of attacks on BSF jawans have also emerged in the media. On June 2, 2021, a month after Mamata Banerjee came back to power, the BJP said 37 of its workers were killed in the post-poll violence that convulsed the state.

There were reports that said women in West Bengal were raped, assaulted and, in some cases, even killed, just because they adhered to a different political ideology. A victim who was raped by the TMC goons in front of her father shared her harrowing ordeal with OpIndia. She narrated how she was attacked and sexually assaulted by her perpetrators associated with the TMC party.

A group-sex video featuring a government school teacher and her male students has gone viral in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai. The Tamil Nadu Cyber cell has launched a probe investigating the scandal that has emerged.

The video made rounds in the public sphere after it was shared by some friends of the teacher’s love interest, a 39-year-old businessman from the city. The video which was shot by the businessman featured the 42-year-old government school teacher and her male students involved in sexual activity. On Sunday, the Tamil Nadu police traced the teacher and she and her lover were taken into custody. The Cyber Cell department in its probe is investigating whether the video was uploaded on international pornographic sites for money or whether it was circulated among close people.

The Director-General of Police (DGP) has issued strict instructions to the Madurai Cyber Cell to crack down on all those who shared pornographic content. It was reported that the teacher, who was separated from her husband was in a relationship with her businessman lover since 2010. She had invited three minor boys, all aged 16 to her residence and apparently got intimate with them. The three boys registered complaint against the woman and the man after which the investigation was started.

During the probe, the businessman revealed that he had circulated the video among some of his friends. The Madurai South All Woman police station has already registered a case against the woman and a case has been registered against her and her lover under Sections 5(1),5(n) r/w 6 of the POCSO Act, sections 292(A), 506 of IPC, and Sections 67 (A) and 67 (B) of the IT Act. The FIR was registered against the duo on the charges of sexual abuse of the minor boys, circulation of obscene content as well as criminal intimidation.

As of now, actions against the individuals who shared the video are being carried out and arrests would be done if required for the interrogation.
