Prime Minister Modi, Hindus are under siege, and now is the right time to speak up

When one thinks of the political and civilisational era that we have been catapulted to, to truly explain what at least the Hindu population is living through, one must quote Charles Dickens – “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair”.

When Prime Minister Modi got up on stage and said ‘Main Narendra Damodardas Modi, Ishwar ki shapat leta hoon..’, I was there in the audience hooting. The entire country applauded and heaved a sigh of relief. The hyenas had been thwarted. Not once, but twice. It was the best of times. It was the age of wisdom, the wisdom of knowing that the country had made the right decision. It was the epoch of belief, a belief that this government will stand by what’s right. It was the season of light and the spring of hope. Hope for a better future. A better India.

However, the Modi era has been one where several factions of his supporters have different sets of demands from him. From burning cultural issues to economic demands and even varying expectations on foreign policy. This article, however, deals primarily with the cultural demands that have arguable been one that has delivered the ‘winter of despair’ for some of his ardent supporters.

There is perhaps no merit in listing the cultural issues that have thus far remained untouched by the government of the day. The list is long and arduous. The current situation, however, can be taken as a yardstick to try and understand the ‘winter of despair’ that many seem to be experiencing.

It was in the Budget session that Prime Minister Modi had spoken about the death of Tabrez Ansari. Personally, I found the speech astute and logical. The Prime Minister mentioned how because of one crime the entire state cannot be vilified and also, that all crimes, whether they occur in Jharkhand, Kerala or West Bengal need to be dealt with the iron fist of the law. He also said that just good ‘good terrorism, bad terrorism’, there can be no culture of ‘good crimes and bad crimes’, thereby subtly telling the opposition that they can’t highlight one Tabrez Ansari and diminish the other crimes in other places, presumably, since he mentioned West Bengal and Kerala, that of the murder of BJP karyakartas.

However, the opposition is subtly impaired. The mention of Tabrez Alam from Prime Minister Modi ended up starting an avalanche that is not out of control and burying any semblance of reason in its path.

There has been a spate of reports that claim that some Muslim or the other was forced to chant ‘Jai Shree Ram’. Most of those cases have been proven false. There have been tens of such cases where the ‘Congress ecosystem’ as branded by the PM himself have run with the narrative of Muslim being made to chant Jai Shree Ram when such cases have been proven to be fake. That, in turn, got international media like the BBC asserting the Jai Shree Ram had turned into a ‘murder cry’. All this while, people in West Bengal being beaten up and killed for chanting ‘Jai Shree Ram’ slipped through the cracks. With the media and PM Modi himself never mentioning those poor souls.

To add insult to injury, sections of the Muslim community have been on a rampage. There have reports of temple desecration like that in Hauz Qazi to protests over Tabrez going horribly out of control and Hindus being stabbed to death. Through it all, the media expectedly has kept stoic silence. They have preferred to shield the Muslim community and amplify even the fake cases of Muslim men being forced to chant Jai Shree Ram.

Hindus are under siege.

The section that supports Prime Minister Modi vociferously have started voicing their disenchantment with the fact that in his first term, PM Modi spoke against Gau Rakshaks and in his second term, right in the beginning of his innings, he spoke about Tabrez Ansari. Hindus have been lost in the cacophony of made up minority insecurities and the Prime Minister has maintained a stoic silence. There is another section of his supporters who have attempted to justify the silence by saying that the PM does what he does, and says what he says in his own time. That perhaps the government is waiting for an appropriate time to voice concern. Or, that ‘action’ is louder than words.

Interestingly, PM Modi himself is doing no different from what he did in his first term. One doesn’t recall the last time the Prime Minister mentioned ‘Hindus’ specifically as the victims of horrid crimes heaped by the Muslim community. And if he didn’t do it in his first and got a second term regardless, one must analyse why that is.

My colleague Rahul Roushan wrote a rather interesting article when PM Modi got his second term. In it, he describes how the ‘right-wing’ (for the want of a better phrase) does not understand Modi and each section views the Prime Minister as a manifestation of his own demands. The libertarians wonder why Modi isn’t being a libertarian, the culture right wonders why he is silent on cultural issues, the policy wonks wonder why he isn’t being more capitalistic and tilting towards socialism, so on and so forth. He writes that perhaps for the ‘right-wing’ to demand action from Modi, his supporters themselves need to understand the phenomenon of Modi and also ask themselves if their own silo of demands find resonance with a crowd substantial enough to make an impact.

While I agree that most of his supporters don’t understand the Prime Minister and they view him from their own specific prisms, I disagree with Rahul when he says that his supporters need to evaluate whether their voice is being echoed by a substantial section, in essence, enough to make an electoral impact. The argument here is that to make the Prime Minister respond, the might of the collective voice on a specific issue, especially cultural issues, the group must be able to deliver an electoral body blow. The lack of resonance of cultural issues with a large group is why PM Modi won a second term in the first place because the grievances that arise today are the same ones that the cultural right had in his first time as well.

Prime Minister Modi himself has fashioned himself as a virtuous politician rooted deeply in religion and spirituality. He has several times spoken about how electoral gains don’t drive him but it is standing by what is right, which is important. The message that has been received by his supporters is that he is a man looking to leave a legacy behind. A legacy of development, cultural renaissance, justice. If that is the essence of Modi, then the fact that the cultural right is not strong enough to make an electoral impact should not matter. When the Hindu culture is under siege, electoral gains or the lack of it shouldn’t matter and as his supporters know and respect PM Modi, one can be confident that it won’t matter. Why then should the Prime Minister not speak up when faith is being attacked?

In his first term, the running narrative was that the government is new and it takes time to clean up the mess left behind by the previous government. Then, the government was under siege from Congress and was still viewed as the underdog. As one that might not come back to power in the second term because of the sustained campaign against it. Now, in its 6th year of governance and the Congress disintegrating, Prime Minister Modi does not have a formidable enemy anymore. The BJP government is no longer the underdog in the race. It is, perhaps, the only runner in the first place. The justification that it takes time to clean up the mess will no longer fly as a reason for silence.

The only logical explanation to justify the silence would be to say that the Prime Minister cannot comment on law and order issues as it is a state subject and I would wholeheartedly agree with that. However, the PM himself opened the door when he spoke about Gau Rakshaks and now, Tabrez Ansari. If law and order issues were not to be commented upon, those incidents should have stayed out of his speeches too. One must also remember that PM Modi brings with himself his Gujarat reputation and a Modi who is silent is one which his supporters have a tough time adjusting to.

Prime Minister Modi opened the door to the expectation of his vocal support to cultural issues when he said he stands against appeasement politics and that he would break the stronghold of ‘secular parties’.

There are other more practical reasons why Narendra Modi needs to speak up. The mainstream media, or the Khan Market Gang as he calls it, is clearly emotionally invested in this narrative. In a country of over a billion people, it will always manage to find a random crime and give it a spin to project Hindus and by extension, the BJP itself, in poor light. It’s not a game he can win by remaining silent.

Narendra Modi doesn’t stand to gain anything by commenting selectively on such matters. His political opponents will be his opponents anyway. But being selective is spreading disenchantment among his staunchest followers. He will still win elections due to sheer inertia and the pathetic state of the country’s opposition but he the faith that he commands will take a hit and even if it’s among a small section of the support base, it would be a travesty.

While discussing this article, colleague Rahul Roushan said that Prime Minister Modi doesn’t send messages. He does what he does, and his support base takes whatever message they wish to take depending on their prism of expectations. However, a leader as astute as PM Modi knows exactly what message would be taken from his words or lack of it thereof. It is time to fix it and ensure that the house is united again.

After decades, India has found a leader that commands unconditional love and respect. A leader who has the ability to unite his house with one statement even after the world sees it is a divided house with irreparable cracks. While his ability to take long term action is uncontestable and the faith has been unshaken, the impact his silence has on short term morale can be and is proving to be devastating.

BJP MLA’s daughter’s husband ‘roughed up’, another couple ‘kidnapped’ from premises of the Allahabad High Court

Ajitesh, BJP MLA Rajesh Mishra’s daughter Sakshi’s husband was allegedly roughed up at the premises of Allahabad High Court today. The couple had reached the High Court to seek protection.

The couple’s lawyer while speaking to the media said that now it’s evident that the couple is facing a threat to their lives. He said that men who had roughed up Ajitesh were not known.

Meanwhile, another ‘kidnapping’ case that was reported this morning from Allahabad High Court premises as well. Prayagraj Police had confirmed the kidnapping and said that they have caught the vehicle.

According to an eyewitness, a couple was abducted at 8:30 am in a black SUV at gunpoint. It has now been reported that the abductors have been nabbed by the police in Fatehpur. The couple have been rescued safely.

Today several reports suggested that BJP MLA Rajesh Mishra’s daughter, Sakshi Mishra, and her husband were kidnapped at gunpoint outside Allahabad court this morning. However, it was later known that these were two separate incidents.

Sakshi Mishra had married a Dalit man named Ajitesh Kumar alias Abhi. Videos posted by Sakshi had gone viral a few days ago. She claimed that the couple were facing threat to their lives from her father and his men. She had demanded security for herself and her husband. She had even filed a petition in the Allahabad High Court seeking the same.

Rajesh Mishra has however denied allegations of threatening her. He did have objections to her marriage but said that she has the right to make her decisions. Meanwhile, the priest of the temple where Sakshi was supposedly married said that no such marriage had taken place.

Pakistani Christian brides forced into prostitution in China, trafficking rackets targeting poor Christians in Pakistan

Many instances of Pakistani Christian women being married to Chinese men and then being forced into prostitution have emerged in several areas in Pakistan. In a recent case, a 27-year-old woman named Rimsha had reached out to her family members in Lahore via a messaging app, claiming that her Chinese husband has been physically abusing her and forcing her into prostitution.

Rimsha was reportedly married to a Chinese man who had promised that she will have a comfortable life in China. Rimsha’s family, like many Pakistani Christians, live a life of abject poverty and marginalisation. When the Chinese suitor had promised a comfortable life for Rimsha and also good jobs for her brothers, the family had delightfully agreed to get her married.

However, soon after her wedding, Rimsha was reportedly subjected to physical and mental abuse. She was reportedly forced into prostitution by her husband.

There have been several such cases reported where poor Pakistani Christian families, particularly in the eastern Punjab region, have been duped by Chinese men through marriage agencies, only to see their daughters being forced into the flesh trade.

In May, several people, including a Chinese woman and a protestant clergyman were arrested in Pakistan’s Faisalabad. The arrested people reportedly had been from a gang that used to organise weddings between Pakistani women and Chinese men, only to later sell these women into prostitution once they land in China. Fake marriage certificates, fake documents and other incriminating papers were seized by police from the eatery where the gang was organising weddings.

As per reports, the long term one-child policy and a cultural demand for male children have resulted in a severe shortage of women in many Chinese societies. The plights of the marginalised Christians often go neglected in a Muslim centric country where even the government authorities have been allegedly instructed to remain tight-lipped about the rising level of trafficking allegations among Christians.

The Associated Press had reported last month that as the Faisalabad racket targetting Christian women revealed an extended network of trafficking, the police were ordered to remain quiet over the issue for the fear of hurting economic ties with Beijing.

The report also stated that Chinese Christian pastors and brokers inside Pakistan target and pursue poor Christian girls aggressively to trap them in fake marriages and subsequent trafficking and prostitution. Pakistani Christian families, who are usually among the poorest of the poor in the country, become easy prey for the rackets who offer money, regular payment and a Chinese work-visa to one family member in exchange for the weddings.

China, however, has denied that the organised trafficking allegations. Activists working closely with victim families claim that as many as 1000 girls have been trafficked and sold into prostitution in China in the last couple of years. Natasha Masih, a 20-year-old Pakistani woman who had escaped from her Chinese husband, had claimed that she was locked in a hotel room in the remote northwestern Chinese city of Urumqi and was forced into prostitution.

After the first arrests in Faisalabad in May, it was revealed that Anas Butt, the son of an influential Muslim leader was one of the ring leaders of the rackets. Human Rights Watch had stated recently that the cases of trafficking of Christian girls from Pakistan to China are ‘disturbingly similar’ to patterns of organised trafficking of women to China from at least five Asian countries.

It is notable here that the Pakistani Christians are not the only victims of the government apathy and negligence that ignores their plight keeping the economic prospects with China as a priority. Several men in Pakistan occupied Gilgit Baltistan have also been trying to get the Pakistani government’s help in freeing their wives from Uighyur Muslim communities in China, who had been locked away in China’s detention camps.

As per reports, as many as 200 women, who are the wives of men from Gilgit Baltistan have been locked away in the so-called ‘education centres’ run by China in Xinjiang province.

Pakistani Hindus, another religious minority in the Muslim nation, also suffer from marginalisation and government apathy towards their problems. There have been many reports where minor girls from Hindu families are kidnapped by older Muslim men, often under patronage from local Madarsas. The girls are then forcibly converted and married off to older Muslim men while local police and legal authorities remain mute spectators.

“Guys are devastated,” says Kiwi captain Kane Williamson after losing the Cricket World Cup to England

A dejected captain, Kane Williamson told the media that the kiwi players are shattered and devastated after losing the World Cup Final. New Zealand lost to England at Lord’s after a tie in the super over. The World Cup winner decided by the number of boundaries rules.

Speaking to media after the match Kane Williamson said, “Congratulations to England. They’ve had a fantastic campaign and they deserved the victory. It’s been challenging; the pitches have been different to what we expected. There weren’t many 300+ scores. I’d like to thank our side for the fight and heart they showed to get us this far. It just wasn’t meant to be today. The guys are shattered; it’s truly devastating.

“We wanted to bat first if we won the toss. We felt runs on the board would be challenging. We may have liked another 10-20 but in a World Cup final, we thought 240-250 might be enough. It was a fantastic game of cricket. For it to go down to the last ball – and then the last ball of the next little match – is tough. But credit to England. There are a lot of positives for us.

Kane being the nicest guy among all, when asked about the overthrow, he said, “That [Stokes’s accidental boundary] was a little bit of a shame, wasn’t it? You just hope it doesn’t happen at moments like that. Perhaps it wasn’t meant to be for us.”

This is the second World Cup final in a row New Zealand lost. The last time they lost against Australia in 2015 at Melbourne.

Video and stats from World Cup Final between England v New Zealand

The BEST One Day International of all time. Yes. Agony and sadness in Kiwi camp, joy, and happiness in English camp. A World Cup winner decided with a super overrule, and that too was not enough. Yes, even the super over was a tie, and the team scored the most number of boundaries was declared the winners.

New Zealand won the toss and decided to bat first in the pressure game, the World Cup Final at Lord’s, a dicey decision in overcast condition. They started cautiously, with some miss and hits, lost Guptill early on just like in previous games. He was caught in front of the wicket and adjudged LBW, and with him, New Zealand also lost their only review.

Williamson and Nicholls batted for 16 overs for their partnership of 74 runs. When it looked like all was set for the Kiwis, they lost their premium batsman and captain Williamson. It was a significant setback for them as he was the one who was scoring runs consistently and big. The next most experienced, Ross Taylor also got out for cheaply, had there was a review left, he would have survived the LBW call. The wicket fell on regular intervals, and New Zealand could score only 241 runs in their 50 overs. Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett bowled beautifully and took three wickets each.

England, unlike their usual start, lost Jason Roy early. That made them struggle throughout the innings. New Zealand bowlers bowled wicket to wicket and didn’t let England score freely, and got three quick wickets in the middle overs. Struggling at 86 for 4, Stokes was joined by Buttler; the pair batted sensibly with some brilliant shots in between added 110 runs for the 5th wicket. But as soon as Buttler got out, the match turned into Kiwis’s favor once again. Stokes kept his nerves, scoring runs at one end and losing partners at the other. A catch went for a six; a throw went for a four, luck was in England’s favor, as the match ended in a tie.

Buttler and Stokes scored 15 runs off Boult in the super over. Archer bowled the super over for England, Neesham and Guptill almost pulled off a win when the two scored 14 runs off 5 balls, with 2 runs required off 1 ball, a stoke to mid-wicket, Guptill ran for his life for the second run, but alas, he got run out and England won the World Cup after a tie in the super over on the basis of more boundaries scored.

Earlier, it was reported that the Yogi government has allocated Rs 20 million for setting up cow shelters in 12 district jails across the state. Additionally, the government has decided to allocate Rs 81.6 crores to open gaushalas in 68 of the 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh.

Rebel Karnataka MLAs write to Mumbai police, cite ‘serious threat’ from Mallikarjun Kharge and Ghulam Nabi Azad

The 14 rebel MLAs from Karnataka staying in a luxury hotel in Mumbai, have alleged ‘serious threat’ from senior Congress leaders. As per reports, the rebel MLAs have named Congress veterans Mallikarjun Kharge and Ghulam Nabi Azad in their allegations.

The MLAs, staying in the Renaissance Hotel in Powai, had also rebuffed the efforts of JDS-Congress senior leadership to meet and talk to them.

Writing to the police inspector of Powai station, these MLAs stated that they have “absolutely no intention of meeting Mallikarjuna Kharge, Ghulam Nabi Azad or any other Congress leaders from Maharashtra or Karnataka.”

The MLAs who have submitted the letter are Shivram Hebbar, B.C. Patil, Mahesh K, Vishwanath, Muniratnam, Narayan Gowda, R Shankar, H Nagesh, Pratap Patil, Gopalaiah, Ramesh J, MTB Nagraj, Somshekar and Basavaraja.

On 11 July, these MLAs had returned to the Powai hotel after meeting Karnataka assembly speaker KR Ramesh in Bengaluru.

The Supreme Court had directed the MLAs to meet the speaker and submit their resignations again.

The Karnataka government had been under threat of collapse after 16 MLAs, 13 from the Congress and 3 from the JDS had submitted their resignations on July 6.

Congress leader DK Shivakumar had attempted to meet the MLAs at Mumbai, but he was escorted back as the MLAs had declined to meet him.

The Supreme Court had also ordered the speaker not to decide on the resignation and disqualification of the MLAs till July 16.

Chandrayaan 2 launch called off one hour before the launch

An hour before the historic Chandrayaan 2 launch, a technical snag was observed in the launch vehicle system. Following that, as a measure of ‘abundant precaution,’ the launch was called off.

Revised date of the launch will be announced soon.

Chandrayaan 2 is India’s second lunar spacecraft which was to be launched earlier today from Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh. It was to be launched at 2:51 am. However, at 3:09 am, ISRO tweeted that the launch has been called off.

If the mission turns out to be successful India would be the fourth country to land on the moon. Previously the US, the former Soviet Union and China were the ones to have successfully accomplished the moon landing.

In a major feat, the Chandrayaan 2 mission is actually cheaper than Hollywood blockbusters like Avengers Infinity Wars and Bandra Worli Sea link.

After an unbelievable Cricket World Cup final match, NDTV manages to misreport the result

The Cricket World Cup final on 14th July between England and New Zealand was one of the most dramatic cricket matches ever played, and finally, England was declared as the winner of the World Cup. But controversial media house NDTV managed to goof up while reporting this simple fact. They reported that England had beaten New Zealand in the Super Over to win the World Cup, which is a totally incorrect interpretation of the results of the match.

The final match of the World Cup played at the Lords Cricket Ground had ended in a tie after England finished their innings at 241 all out, matching the New Zealand score of 241/8. Hence the match went to a tie-breaker over, called Super Over. In Super Over, each team nominate three batsmen and one baller each, and whoever scores more runs in this over is declared the winner of the match. But amazingly, both the scores tied at the end of that over too, with both teams scoring 15 runs.

Therefore, the World Cup winner was decided on the basis of a little-known rule to settle such matches with tied scores, the number of boundaries. As England had hit more boundaries in the match, they won the Cricket World Cup 2019. It is important to note that the result of the match remains tie, as both teams scored equal runs both in the regular match and the Super Over. But NDTV wrongly reported that England had beaten New Zealand in the Super Over.

England did not beat New Zealand in the Super Over, as NDTV is reporting, because both teams scored 15 runs in that over. England became one day cricket world champions because they had hit more boundaries in the finale match. NDTV completely misread the rules of cricket and results of the final match to publish a misleading and incorrect story.

Despite UP Police’s clarification, IndiaSpend’s faulty ‘factchecker’ continues to peddle lies about Unnao madarsa incident

A couple of days back a scuffle broke out between two groups over the game of cricket in Uttar Pradesh’s Unnao. However, twisting the context of the fight, the Imam of the Jama Masjid in Unnao claimed that the fight erupted after Muslim students of a madarsa were coerced to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans. The Uttar Pradesh Police, on the other hand, refuted the allegations claiming that the fight broke out on the playground and it had nothing to do with the communal undertones the incident is being attached to.

The FactChecker.in, which is notoriously infamous for running a prejudicial viewpoint, disregarded Uttar Pradesh Police’s investigation which conclusively established that the Muslim youths weren’t dragooned to chant ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans and instead chose to believe the complainant Nisar Ahmed’s version that the victims were beaten for protesting against chanting of ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans.

Even after the Uttar Pradesh police issued a clarification that the reports of Muslim youths being pummeled for not chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans were baseless, factchecker.in continued to believe the victim’s version of the event, showing utter contempt and disregard for the law enforcement agency charged with administering law and order in the state.

According to the CCTV footage accessed by the police, the alleged perpetrators, against whom an FIR was lodged and who were accused of allegedly thrashing Muslim youths for not chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans were not even present at the spot. The mobile phone records also show that the accused were not present at the spot. The police have also said the complaint of raising slogans hasn’t been verified yet.

However, in a subversive attempt to discredit the police findings and run them down, FactChecker.in blatantly defended its stated version of the event without providing any credible evidence to back their claim.

This is in line with their archetypal modus operandi where they twist facts to portray Muslims as victims and Hindus as brutal aggressors. Recently, in the temple desecration incident in Delhi’s Hauz Qazi, factchecker.in distorted the facts to depict Muslims as victims and Hindus, whose temple was desecrated by a Muslim mob and idols vandalised, were painted as instigators. According to them, tensions were flared up by Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal members and Muslims were depicted as victims, even though a Hindu temple was vandalised and idols were broken.

There is a distinct pattern in how factchecker.in perceives an event in which Hindus are invariably portrayed as perpetrators against the minorities. They peddle fictitious narratives to allege that Muslims and other minorities are wantonly targeted by Hindus. They unscrupulously categorise such incidents under their dubious ‘Hate Tracker’ to document crimes committed in the name of religion. Their vile propaganda was ably exposed with painstaking details by Swati Goel, a journalist associated with Swarajya Magazine. She had called out the website for being selectively cherrypicking certain incidents while ignoring others to suit a particular narrative. OpIndia also has shown several times how information is distorted by factchecker.in in their so hate tracker to show Hindus as aggressors.
