Is Kamal Nath in trouble for the 1984 Sikh Genocide case? Armed with this Home Ministry order, MS Sirsa certainly thinks so

The Home Ministry has given the nod to reinvestigate old cases related to the 1984 Sikh Genocide case. MS Sirsa, the chief of Shiromani Akali Dal released a press note today hailing the Home Ministry and asserting that this reinvestigation would mean Kamal Nath, Congress leader and Madhya Pradesh CM will now be brought to book.

Sirsa said that this order means that Kamal Nath would surely go to jail like Sajjan Kumar who was enjoying Z+ due to the Gandhi family. He said, “his involvement in 1984 riots will be proved in the court after completion of fresh enquiry against him”.

The order that Sirsa was referring to is dated April 9th 2019. The order says that the SIT should reinvestigate serious criminal cases which were filed in the National Capital Territory of Delhi in connection with the 1984 riots case and have since been closed. For this purpose, the SIT shall examine the records afresh.

Home Ministry Order

The order also says that the order has been passed in consideration of the representation made on 24th December 2018 received from the General Secretary, Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee. The order says that the SIT may investigate even cases where the accused have been discharged if any fresh information or evidence comes to light.

The representation that the order refers to was made by MS Sirsa. The representation spoke about the attack on Rakab Ganj Gurudwara in which Kamal Nath is said to have led the mob.

In his representation, Sirsa had said that there was clear evidence that Kamal Nath was present at the Rakab Ganj Gurudwara inciting the mob in 1984 but unfortunately the police had failed to investigate the case properly. Sirsa had said that the five people who were discharged for the crime cannot be tried in the court of law, but the real culprit was never chargesheeted and thus, it is the duty of the police and the SIT to proceed against these culprits and bring them to book.

He had said that Kamal Nath was an active participant in the mob and should be investigated.

The representation had specifically asked the Home Ministry to direct the SIT to inquire into the role of Kamal Nath.

When OpIndia reached out to MS Sirsa, he said that the order has been passed in reference to his representation and thus, it is an order to investigate Kamal Nath as well.

The language of the order certainly does seem to mean that Kamal Nath can now be reinvestigated for his alleged role in the attack of Rakbar Gang Gurudwara.

While the order was passed on 9th April, Sirsa said that he has acquired this order only now and hence, it is being reported now.

Chandrababu Naidu denied VIP access to aircraft and undergoes frisking at Vijayawada airport, made to travel in bus

Former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and current leader of opposition N Chandrababu Naidu was denied VIP access to the aircraft he was boarding and was asked to undergo frisking at Vijayawada airport.

Reportedly, airport security staff did not allow his convoy up to the aircraft. Naidu was asked to get off and undergo the regular security checks before boarding, a security guard was seen frisking him at the entrance. Following which he had to board the bus along with common passengers.

Naidu was given ‘Z plus’ category security after he was attacked by Maoists at Alipiri in Tirupati in 2003. This meant that he had 24-hour protection by 23 armed security men and escort vehicles.

The TDP has also alleged that BJP and YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) were resorting to witch-hunting while asserting that Leader of Opposition (LoP) in a state Assembly also comes with the benefits of a cabinet minister rank.

Former state Home Minister and TDP leader Chinna Rajappa said that the authorities have not only insulted the former CM but also compromised his security. He added that Naidu had never needed to face such a situation though he was in the opposition for many years. He also urged the central as well as the state government to ensure proper security for Naidu.

The TDP has had a sour relationship with the ruling YSR Congress Party after having lost in the 2019 Assembly elections. Earlier Chandrababu Naidu had decided to skip Jagan Mohan Reddy’s swearing-in ceremony despite being invited by the CM.

Match Preview, Afghanistan v South Africa: The bottom two teams will play against each other

0

Noone would have thought of this kind of headline for a South Africa match that too against Afghanistan. However, that’s how it is in the current world cup scenario South Africa is just ahead of Afghanistan thanks to one point they got due to the rain against West Indies. This will be the first time these two teams play against each other in ODIs.

So far, this has been the most disastrous World Cup campaign for South Africa. Having lost the first three games, now going to face Afghanistan in a match where there is a possibility of rain throughout the day and they can’t afford another washout.

Hoping for a full match but the weather at Cardiff is expected to have a good amount of rain in the first half of the day and then passing shower during the second half, but this is a day-night match and it will start a little late. So South Africa still has a chance for a result.

South Africa is desperately looking for a win, and they are playing against the weakest team of this world cup. Their shocking performance has already let down their fans around the world. If they cannot produce a positive result in their favour then it will be bye bye for them from the World Cup.

It’s high time for them to play as a team and leave everything behind. Take one game at a time and treat every match as a knockout. They have the capability of performing, and they cannot have a better opposition to get back in form.

Afghanistan had a chance to win against Sri Lanka in the first game but lost that opportunity. Since then they look like just a traveller and have been very inconsistent in the tournament. This is mostly because they are a very young team. However, they should try to beat South Africa as the Proteas are not in great form. Afghanistan is having a problem with its star player Rashid Khan, who has not able to deliver as per his capability. If he can uplift the mood of the team with his all-around performance, there would be high chances of Afghanistan providing the biggest upset of recent times in cricket.

Players to watch out for

Rabada must be waiting to have a go at Afghanistan batsmen, with his kind of pace he can easily outdo the Afghans, and that will help South Africa not only in winning the match but also maintaining a reasonable run rate. Rabada would be excepting some help from the prime spinner Tahir from the other end.

Najibullah is in form for Afghanistan. He has to cope with all the pressure and perform because others are not able to score. Afghanistan has a chance to put up a decent score on board only if he scores some runs today as well, and Najibullah would be hoping to get some support from others as well.

The Islamic onslaught in West Bengal: A saga that started long before the current state regime made it worse

One of the earliest signs of an Islamic onslaught in Bengal was during the late 1940s when calls for a separate Muslim nation were high. It was on 16th August 1946 that Direct Action Day was started and it is no coincidence that 16th of August was the 18th Day of Ramzan, a day when the prophet had launched the Jihad against the pagans of Mecca and massacred them in the bloody Battle of Badr proclaiming the victory over Heathens and Infidels. What is shocking is that these Noakhali riots were orchestrated by some of the most powerful Muslim Leaders who went on to hold the reigns of Pakistan.

These include Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy who was the then Chief Minister of Bengal and went on to become the Prime Minister of Pakistan. Suhrawardy has rightly been called the Butcher of Bengal by SwarajyaMag, played a key role in ensuring that the Calcutta Police became more Muslim by recruiting Punjabi Musalmans and Pashtuns who would turn a blind eye to the upcoming genocide in Bengal. Another key orchestrator was Khwaja Nizamuddin who later became Governor General of Pakistan gave fiery speeches on 16th of August urging violence against Hindus, with the entire Muslim League insinuating a holy Jihad against the Hindus.

The events led to the Noakhali Riots led to the deaths of over 5000-20000 Hindus and Muslims with over 75000 were displaced. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, former Finance Minister of Bengal described the events as a planned and concerted attack by the minority community over the majority community.

The Islamisation of Bengal has been a slow and steady process, repetitive governments have chosen to ignore their rising population, rather using the community as a vote bank. First the Congress just after partition, then the communists for 30 long gruelling years and now the TMC government have just used the community for their personal gains overlooking the drastic change in population figures.

So, what exactly are these population figures? Well, for the starters the Muslim population in Bengal right after partition was close to 19.85 percent, however, in just 68 years the population of Muslims in Bengal has risen steadily to a healthy 27 percent with the next census imminent in 2 years. However, this does not include the millions of illegal immigrants majority of them Muslim who live without documents and have crossed the porous border from Bangladesh into the states of Bengal and Assam in the last few decades, the population of such Bangladeshi varies widely with different estimates putting their population anywhere from 15 million to 20 million individuals, with large number of them being based out in the State of West Bengal.

These people who speak in Bangla with a Bangladeshi Dialect are called ‘Bangal’ in West Bengal and are widely associated with being cheap labour and engaging in petty thievery and all in all acting as anti-social elements by the local populace.

The situation is so dire that out of the 23 districts that West Bengal has, almost 12 have Muslims in excess of 20 percent, 3 districts of West Bengal Malda, Murshidabad and Uttar Dijnapur are such that the Muslims outnumber the Hindus. Islam is a religion which looks down upon the use of contraceptives and practices such as polygamy lead to much higher fertility rates amongst Muslim women than that of any other religion, this has led to Islam having a much higher population growth than any other religion in the world.

Between the last decade of 2001-2011, the Hindu Population in Bengal has declined by 1.94 percent and meanwhile the Muslims have grown by 1.77 percent beating all the national trends. The Muslim population of Bengal has been growing at a much higher pace than the national average. Nationwide statistics also support the claims that Islam is on the rise, while the Hindus have declined by 0.7 percent, Muslims have increased by 0.8 percent between the period of 2001-2011.

This steady increase of Muslim population clearly reflects that the community has now become a powerful vote bank in Bengal that has been on the rise since independence, the situation has further enhanced in the last few decades as continuing CPM and TMC governments continue to cultivate the community as a vote bank and encourage the adoption of illegal immigrants into the mainstream society as well. This increase in the Muslim population has also been followed by an ever-increasing number of riots in Bengal, ranging from the riots in Malda to the ones in Baduria and the ones in Howrah.

There is also an increasing number of fatwas being issued and increasing instances of parts of Bengal being declared a part of Caliphate. However, what is even more shocking is the increasing use of radical Islam for imposing the so-called Sharia Islamic law in parts of Bengal with the State police openly condoning such activities. It was in the year 2007 that Internationally acclaimed author Taslima Nasrin was forced to flee Bengal when Muslim Leaders in Kolkata issued a Fatwa against her and announced a bounty for her head, the riots which followed to hound her out of the city were such that the army was called in to take hold of the situation. These were clear attempts by the rioters and radical Islamists to incorporate Islamic Blasphemy Laws and restrict the Freedom of Speech and Expression as Taslima Nasrin was hounded out of the ‘City of Joy’.

Thousands of Rioters demanding death of Kamlesh Tiwari for Blasphemy in Malda Riots. Posters read “Gustakh-E-Nabi Ki Aik Sar Tan Se Juda (Only one punishment for Blasphemy that is beheading)”

It was in 2014 that Ahmad Hassan Imran, a man red flagged by Indian Intelligence Agencies was chosen by the TMC to represent them in the Rajya Sabha, the man has been accused of instigating violence against Hindus, participating in major riots and providing shelter to terrorists. Imran is a founder and self-admitted member of the radical student group, the Student Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), a recognized terrorist organization banned by the Indian government.

The man has been a co-founder and president of the state unit of Student Islamic Movement of India, an organization banned by the government of India for its terror activities. Furthermore, he has also been involved in the establishment of Kalam, a radical magazine which has called for establishment of a Muslim state governed by Sharia, the magazine which later turned into a newspaper Dainik Kalam was sold to Saradha Group, a dubious financial entity with links to both the West Bengal Government and Mamta Banerjee. Such appointments by the Mamta Banerjee led TMC government have made the Hindu populace lose confidence in the party as it clearly has a skewered view of how secularism has to be maintained in the State of West Bengal.

The present TMC government has been so brazenly appeasing the Muslims that it has already been warned multiple times by the Calcutta High Court, read for instance the statement of Hon’ble Judge Dipankar Datta wherein he clearly calls out the TMC for appeasing the minorities: “There has been a clear endeavour on the part of the state government to pamper and appease the minority section of the public at the cost of the majority section without there being any plausible justification.”

Mamata Banerjee has taken minority appeasement to a whole another level during her reign over Bengal, right from granting of tickets to Imams and other highly regarded religious leaders of one particular community, issuing monthly salaries to Imams and Muezzins, attending annual Eid Prayers and Iftar Parties while at the same time conveniently restricting Durga Puja, a festival sacred to Hindus, designating vast majority of Muslim Communities (almost 87 percent) as Other Backward Classes despite many of them not yet designated as such by the Union Government. Universities for the minorities have been established, as have been hostels and special scholarships, along with special quotas for education and jobs. Free bicycles have been given to Muslim families, free rail passes to Muslim females and free laptops to Muslim males.

She has ensured the approval and validation of the academic degrees of 10000 previously unrecognized and Saudi funded madrasas, minarets, honorariums for imams and an exclusively Islamic township. The government under Mamta Banerjee has taken steps in the direction for the foundation of Muslim medical, technical and nursing schools with exclusive scholarships and subsidies for Muslim students, as well as Muslim-only hospitals.

Mamta Banerjee has openly spoken against the National Register of Citizens and has endorsed the illegal immigrants as well. Mamta has repeatedly taken steps that reek of authoritarianism by her pseudo secular politics of minority appeasement, the judiciary had quickly intervened and had given a sharp rap on the wrist of the TMC government when the Durga Puja Visarjan, a day sacred to all Hindus was delayed by the Government due to Muharram coinciding on the same day, however undeterred the TMC government had ignored the High Court and had gone ahead by delaying the visarjan. There were entire villages in the district of Birbhum that weren’t allowed to celebrate Durga Puja because the administration felt that it would be ‘offensive’ to the minorities.

There needs to be a clear understanding that the term ‘Secular’ does NOT mean curtailing the rights of the majority for the endearment of the minority. From changing the words Ram Dhenu to Rong Dhenu and Akashi to Asmani, TMC needs to reconsider their pseudo-secular tactics lest the sleeping Hindu in Bengal awakes.

With a 27% Muslim populace in Bengal, there is enough political incentive for the authorities to dubiously work toward the progression of an Islamist agenda. In certain areas, for example, the fringe area of Murshidabad, which is over 63% Muslim, accepted shariah is forced on all inhabitants. By far most of the political candidates, elected officials and administration are Muslim and the monetary and economic prospects for Hindus diminish as Muslims refuse to back the businesses owned by Non-Muslims. Posing with the Quran, wearing a Burqa and such minority appeasement tactics by the present TMC government has ensured that the entire Muslim vote bank continues to remain in their kitty. With just another 10 percent or so of the Hindu votes, Mamta Banerjee can easily retain power in a three-way contest in state assembly polls.

In the last decade or so there has been a stagnation in the leftist parties in Bengal, leading to a void in opposition, the BJP has stepped up at the right moment to fill that void, with her ever-rising antics and unmistakable tilt towards one community, Mamta Banerjee has ensured a highly polarised Lok Sabha Election in 2019 and this polarisation figured greatly in the results which clearly show that the people of Bengal have now chosen a viable alternative to the TMC. After coming to power the Mamta led government had manufactured a large number of cases against the CPM cadre and systematically dismantled their machinery leaving the people of the state with no alternative, the BJP has stood up as the alternative and have almost doubled their vote share in the recent elections.

The recently concluded Lok Sabha Elections of 2019 gave a clear majority to the NDA, with the alliance making major gains in the state of West Bengal compensating for the losses sustained elsewhere. The tally increased from a lowly 2 seats in 2014 to a staggering 18 seats in 2019. The vote share has also drastically increased from a respectable 16 percent in 2014 to more than 40 percent in 2019. There is a section of the so-called Bengali Intelligentsia who consider themselves superior to the rest and look down upon the politics of BJP in poor taste and undignified to the Bengali way, calling it a conspiracy of the crass, uneducated people belonging to the cow belt of the north. However, the mandate of the people has shown that they have decidedly chosen an alternative to the pseudo-secularism of Mamta Banerjee and TMC.

Bengal has historically been a land of intellectuals, gifting India well renowned social reformers, educationists and artists ranging from Vidyasagar to Rabindra Nath Tagore and Subhash Chandra Bose. However, in the land of these greats, a man should be able to stand tall, chest broad and shout Jai Shree Ram without the fear of being incarcerated or the threats of being flailed given by the Chief Minister herself. The day is not far when the streets of Kolkata will reverberate with the slogans of Joy Shree Ram and the popular mandate would have rejected the politics of pseudo-secularism and minority appeasement.

How Mamata Banerjee is spared of allegations they level on Prime Minister Narendra Modi

Millions of Indians today would term West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee is arrogant. Or why she wouldn’t pick up the phone calls from Prime Minister Narendra Modi or returns call to state governor Keshari Nath Tripathi when the crisis is as grave as Cyclone Fani or the state is sitting on a time-bomb on doctors’ agitation?

Tens and thousands of us would also call “Didi” a fascist. Or why she would jump out of her caravan and confront people who are merely chanting “Jai Shri Ram”, a matter of greeting among India’s masses?  Or why she would tell the agitating doctors to return to work within four hours or face the consequences?

Lakhs of Indians won’t deny either that she is communal in her approach, favouring Muslims and running down Hindus. Or why she would change “ramdhenu” with “rangdhenu” in textbooks? Pass the stricture that idol immersion in Durga Puja must be postponed on Muharram day?

An overwhelming number of us would also term Mamata Banerjee as an autocrat. Or why she would deny prominent opposition leaders, from Amit Shah to Yogi Adityanath, from landing on her turf for election rallies? Tear up the posters of BJP’s rallies? Pull up custom officials who have the temerity to stop her relatives at the airport?

A still bigger number of us would’ve no doubt that the only news emerging from West Bengal for so many days is violence.  Mamata Banerjee and her TMC must take the blame for violent politics. So rampant is the politics of blood that 34% of seats in Panchayat elections go uncontested. Or the lynchings which take place regularly on Bengal’s streets.

None of us would also deny that Mamata Banerjee is undemocratic and unconstitutional. People (Priyanka Sharma) are jailed for posting memes on WhatsApp; professors (Rakesh Sinha) is booked for inciting violence when all he has done is to visit a temple with his mother.

Millions would nod in affirmative that Mamata Banerjee resembles a dictator in Bengal. The bureaucracy is under her thumbs; police is an extension for her coercive politics and is shielded from investigations by Central agencies. She even resists interventions of the Supreme Court. Look at the entire doctors’ agitation in West Bengal now.

Millions would’ve also heard about the ongoing Saradha, Narada and Rose Valley scams and the charges that Mamata Banerjee is corrupt. The corruption charges have engulfed her TMC party.

All too often we hear that terror network and jihadi forces are rampant in West Bengal. That terror-network Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen has taken roots in the state. The news that radicalization has taken place in madrasas in districts such as Bardhaman. That the dreaded Islamic State (IS) has named a new “emir” in West Bengal. How would Mamata Banerjee deny the allegation that she is a “secessionist” and one of India’s “tukde-tukde” gang?

Now please put all these adjectives together: arrogant, fascist, communal, autocrat, violent, undemocratic, unconstitutional, dictator, corrupt etc together. Name one person who has been called all this by India’s ecosystem in the last five years: Yes, you are right—Narendra Modi. And I challenge you to show one instance in our mainstream English media—Lutyens Media—who has ever accused Mamata Banerjee of such traits.

What is an ecosystem? The ecosystem isn’t the government in power. The ecosystem is a network of politicians, media, academicians, lawyers, bureaucrats, institutional heads, cultural czars etc who work in unison to push a particular agenda.

So think about the politicians (such as Rahul Gandhi, Mehbooba Mufti, Omar Abdullah, Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati etc), journalists (Shekhar Gupta, Rajdeep Sardesai, Sagarika Ghose, Barkha Dutt etc), lawyers (Prashant Bhushan etc), academicians (Prof. Ram Chandra Guha, Faizan Mustafa, Rajmohan Gandhi etc) institutional heads (former Election Commissioners, Police Commissioners, Ex-Chief Justices of India who occupy the edit pages), cultural czars (Javed Akhtar, Kamal Haasan etc) etc. Look at their twitter timelines to show me if they’ve ever accused Mamata Banerjee of being communal, autocrat, corrupt or instigating lynchings etc. How is that when the rest of India has almost a similar opinion on Mamata Banerjee, these biggies who occupy our ears, eyes and minds have a completely different opinion?

It is easy for India’s ecosystem to do whataboutery. So when violence happens in Bengal, it’s both TMC and BJP who are guilty. If provocation happens, both TMC and BJP are at fault. If communal issues are flaring up, both TMC and BJP must take the blame.

But now the eco-system is in a bind. The doctors’ agitation can’t be blamed on BJP. It’s people who are rising up against Mamata Banerjee’s TMC in the state of Bengal. You can resort to propaganda against RSS and BJP, weave themes on lynchings and communalism but how do you face up to the wrath of millions. It’s the people of India who stood up to the ecosystem and showed it the mirror in the 2019 General Polls. It’s the people who are again exposing this network in rapidly deteriorating West Bengal.

As they say, you can fool some of the people all the time. But you can’t fool all the people all the time.

FactChecker wins an international award for its dubious and faulty hate crime database

IndiaSpend’s factchecker.in has won an international award for its ‘Hate Crime Watch’ database where it fudges and manipulates data to peddle the narrative that Muslims are disproportionately the victims of hate crimes. The award was presented by the Global Editors Network in their Data Journalism Awards for 2019.

The Jury remarked, “The Factchecker.in team have performed an important public service in tracking and making available a database of religion-based hate crimes in India, filling a key gap in official statistics. The collaborative effort allows users to better understand trends in hate crime incidents, including by geography, local government in power or religious group targeted – and that, hopefully, can lead to a better-informed public and better public policy on this issue.”

At OpIndia.com, we have regularly demonstrated on several occasions the extremely problematic aspects of IndiaSpend’s Hate Crime Watch. Swati Goel Sharma of Swarajya Mag, too, has busted the intended narrative on several occasions.

Amusingly enough, FactChecker has admitted in the past that it does not even aspire to be an ‘exhaustive record of all religious identity-based hate crimes in India’ but seeks to ‘identify patterns’ for public scrutiny. In absence of exhaustive records on an issue as sensitive as hate crimes, how can any meaningful conclusions be drawn from the data?

Anyone who knows anything about data understands that if you are seeking to identify a pattern from a given set of data that will hold true for the larger population, then you need to ensure that the given set of data is representative of the larger population. It appears that FactChecker has made it a habit of not doing that, our comprehensive report on the matter that illustrates this fact can be read here.

There have been occasions when FactChecker has deliberately twisted the facts of the matter to increase the number of Muslim victims in its database by including cases where the victim and the perpetrator both belonged to the Muslim community. On other occasions, the organization has continued to maintain a case in its hate crime database even after it was proved that no such incident occurred merely because the alleged victim was from the Muslim community and the alleged perpetrators Hindu. According to the luminaries at FactChecker, the Pulwama Terror Attack wasn’t a hate crime either even though the Terrorist himself proclaimed that he was carrying the attack against ‘Cow-Piss drinkers’.

At the end of the day, FactChecker’s award for its Hate Crime Database only reflects the falling standards of journalism. In the past few years, the mainstream media has gotten nearly every major story wrong big time. While the American Media was having an orgy over Donald Trump’s supposed collusion with the Russians, a myth that was busted by the Mueller report, in India, every major media outlet missed the tectonic shift in Indian polity that awarded Narendra Modi an even greater majority in the Parliament.

The troubling part about the whole matter is that the awards are backed by the Google News Lab. Simon Rogers, Data Editor at Google News Lab, is the director of the competition. Google, in recent times, has been accused of political biases itself and videos had surfaced of its adherence to the most rabid form of left-wing identity politics. The Tech Giant has also been accused in the past of manipulating search results to favour a certain political entity or suppress conservative political opinions.

Central government releases Rs 57 lakh as first GST refund for Langar items purchased by Gurudwaras

In a massive relief to gurudwaras across the country, the Central Government has finally released Rs 57 lakh as a refund for the GST that was charged on items used for preparing the food at ‘Langars’ in gurudwaras, including the Golden Temple. Union Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal thanked the Prime Minister for fulfilling his promise to the Sikh community.

In a statement, she said the Ministry of Culture has released the fund to the GST authority in Ludhiana from where it would be handed over to Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) which manages the gurudwara’s across the country.

“This is the first instalment of GST refund and henceforth this refund will be issued quarterly to the SGPC. I thank the prime minister for the respect shown to Sikh sentiments by resolving this issue to the satisfaction of the Sikh community,” said the minister.

The minister had also asked the Congress government in Punjab to follow suit and fulfil its promise to refund State share of GST to the SGPC.

In 2018 SGPC had claimed that the GST levied on Langar raw materials caused a heavy burden on the Golden Temple as it had to pay Rs 2 crore as GST from 1st July 2017 to 31st January 2018. Last year, the Modi government decided to waive GST on langar items on Thursday by providing financial assistance under ‘Seva Bhoj Yojna’.

As announced by the Ministry of Culture, the scheme with a total outlay of Rs. 325.00 crores “envisages to reimburse the Central Government share of Central Goods and Services Tax (CGST) and Integrated Goods and Service Tax (IGST)so as to lessen the financial burden of such Charitable Religious Institutions who provide Food/Prasad/Langar (Community Kitchen)/Bhandara free of cost without any discrimination to Public/Devotees”.

Just a day after swearing in, PM Modi took a major decision on ‘Prime Minister’s Scholarship Scheme’ and followed by the first Cabinet meeting the in which five path-breaking decisions were made. In a massive push for healthcare benefits, the government has reduced the contribution of employees and employers for ESI (Employee State Insurance) scheme.

Corrupt Gupta brothers and the big fat weddings in Auli, Uttarakhand: Did the BJP govt in the state miss their sketchy past?

BJP leader Uma Bharti took to Twitter today to raise objections against a wedding that is set to take place in Uttarakhand. The weddings that are set to take place in the picturesque mountains are that of the offsprings of the Gupta brothers. While Ajay Gupta’s son Suryakant gets married on June 18-20, his younger brother Atul Gupta’s son Shashank ties the knot on June 20-22. People monitoring the arrangements peg the wedding to cost an estimated Rs 200 crore!

Uma Bharti’s reasons for opposing the wedding might be skewed. Her main grouse is that of obscene display of wealth. Such a socialist argument might not find resonance with many considering even if the wedding entails an obscene display of wealth, the person whose wealth is being spent has the ultimate right to choose what he does with his money.

However, there are other reasons to be concerned about these big-fat-weddings that are about to take place in Uttarakhand.

For starters, Ghaziabad based activist has written a letter to Prakash Javdekar expressing concern over what these weddings would do the ecological balance in the region. The weddings are set to take place in the ski destination of Auli.

Lawyer and environmentalist Akash Vashishtha, in his letter, states that he would be compelled to seek legal action if the government does not act ahead of the event.

Vashishtha’s letter states he was disturbed to learn about the wedding of the sons of Ajay Gupta and Atul Gupta, who are being probed by the Income Tax Department for alleged money laundering, between June 18-20 in Auli area of Chamoli district in the Garhwal Himalayas.

According to Vashishtha, situated at an altitude of 2,505 metres, in close proximity to the snow-covered Himalayan peaks such as Nanda Devi, Mana Parvat and Kamat, Auli is a fragile ecology, blanketed with thick snow for most parts of the year.

He says that this unmindful and reckless personal event would harm the ecology of the entire Himalayan landscape, irreparably.

Apart from the ecological concerns that these destinations weddings might have, the background of the Gupta brothers themselves raise questions as to why the Uttarakhand government is cooperating and catering to their demands at all.

President of South Africa who resigned in February 2018 after charges of massive fraud and impropriety have inextricable links to the Gupta brothers. Zuma was accused of being involved in various fraudulent deals benefitting his family with the help of Gupta brothers – India born influential South Africa based businessmen with interests in computers, media, mining, and real estate.

Zuma’s son is reported to be a director in many companies of Gupta brothers, and thus Zuma was accused of granting undue favours to Gupta brothers as a result of which piling personal fortunes for himself and his family. For example, there was one instance where Bank of Baroda, through its South African operations, gave loan to Jacob Zuma’s fourth wife to buy a house. The loan was paid by companies owned by Gupta brothers.

Helping Zuma’s wife pay a housing loan is lesser of the charges levelled against the Gupta brothers. There have been reports that Guptas were so influential and powerful in South Africa owing to their proximity to the Zuma family, that they even used to offer posts in the central government to politicians (fixing cabinet berths a la Radia tape controversy back in India) apart from winning government contracts for themselves.

Gupta brothers have inextricable links to one Piyoosh Goyal (businessman) who has inextricable links to Kapil Sibal.

The Gupta brothers were also connected to the BRICS summit saga that unfolded in 2018. At that time, there was news that there were invisible hands that were trying to derail the summit and also, get Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrested.

The South African Kashmiri Action Group and the Muslim Lawyers’ Association demanded the investigation, arrest and prosecution of Modi over his governance of Jammu and Kashmir. The motivated calls for arrest were based on the misplaced UN report on Kashmir that India had summarily and vehemently rejected. The Ministry of External Affairs had issued a statement saying “It is a selective compilation of largely unverified information. It is overtly prejudiced and seeks to build a false narrative.”

Interestingly, the bid to derail the summit by legal applications of having Narendra Modi arrested have been fuelled by the controversial businessmen of the Gupta family.

South African media outlet DailyMaverick reported :

Building closer relations with India is probably somewhere on Ramaphosa’s to-do list, but at least he and Modi have in common a dislike for the Zuma-friendly Gupta family. During his 2016 state visit to South Africa, Modi snubbed a dinner at which he had heard some of the Gupta brothers would be present, and now some conspiracy theorists in the Indian High Commission in Pretoria reckon Gupta-friendly officials might be fuelling efforts to embarrass Modi, as payback.

While investigating the links between Zuma and the Gupta brothers, AmaBhugane and DailyMaverick had stumbled upon his business relations with another controversial businessman called Piyoosh Goyal and in turn, Goyal’s business relations with Congress leader Kapil Sibal. However, no link has been established between Kapil Sibal and the Gupta family directly. Though, Daily Maverick amaBhungane claim that family of Kapil Sibal – the Congress leader, his wife Promila Sibal, and his son Akhil Sibal, who is also a lawyer – and families of Piyoosh Goyal and Gupta brothers took a chartered flight from Delhi to Mumbai to watch the final of the 2011 Cricket World Cup between India and Sri Lanka, a charge which was summarily denied by Kapil Sibal and his son.

Our independent investigation also showed that Kapil Sibal had acquired a defunct company from Piyoosh Goyal and an expensive piece of land for a nominal rate and the business dealings between the two were a little opaque. Following our investigation, Kapil Sibal’s refusal to answer our question and his subsequent u-turn from what he had told the South African journalists, Sibal had also threatened to sue OpIndia.

In 2018, documents seized by the Income Tax department during raids at Gupta brothers properties in Dehradun and Saharanpur revealed that Rs. 100 crores which were spent on a Shiva temple in Saharanpur was used as a front to launder money by way of ‘donations’. The properties that were raided were in the middle of the South African scandal that involved Jacob Zuma. The suspicion was that they were bringing money into India.

“The Shiva project was a means to bring money back to India. Otherwise, there was no need to spend over Rs 100 crore for a temple of this size. The documents revealed an online transaction of Rs 22.67 crore made to the Gupta temple trust in 2015 by the Guptas’ employee Sanjay Grover, who worked in Dubai before his death. Grover also has an account in a private bank in Dehradun and that is also under scanner”, IT sleuths had said to Times of India.

The Times of India report says, “Investigations further revealed that Grover died in 2016, following which an I-T team quizzed his wife, Renu Grover, who lives in West Patel Nagar, Delhi, on Wednesday. The I-T official said, “In her statement, she clarified that her husband worked with the Guptas in Dubai and drew a salary of 26,000 Dirham (about Rs 4.59 lakh) per month and was not in a condition to give loan or donate Rs 22.67 crore”.

In 2018, IT sleuths had said that the process of attaching 30 properties had already been started by the government and that they are trying to identify 60 more properties that were mentioned in the documents seized by the IT department.

South African journalists reported that while the Gupta brothers have had recent legal success in SA courts, Zondo Commission into State Capture is not yet complete and that the nation hopes to see prosecutions in the future. In the same report, the South African journalist also raise alarm bells over the Gupta brothers meeting with Uttarakhand officials for the arrangements of the wedding and urge Indian journalist to raise a similar alarm.

The conspiracy of silence around the Gupta brothers and their shenanigans is such that back in 2017, HSBC was accused of complicity in letting the businessmen transfer money out of SA. In fact, the peer had demanded an investigation into HSBC for criminal complicity in helping the Gupta brothers launder money.

Coming back to Gupta weddings, this won’t be the first time that the Guptas would embarrass India as far as lavish weddings go. On 30 April 2013, an Airbus A330-200 chartered aircraft run by Jet Airways carrying 217 guests from India was cleared to land at the South African Air Force base at Waterkloof for the wedding ceremony of Vega Gupta to Aakash Jahajgarhia at. This event caused an uproar that led to the African National Congress (ANC) and other political parties as well as the South African National Defence Union denouncing this use of the air force base. The ANC issued a statement calling for “those responsible for giving the family permission to come into the country without going through the normal channels be ‘brought to book’.

Interestingly, the person responsible for the fiasco in South Africa, the man who cleared the landing was later demoted, but, he had asserted that the landing was approved because of ‘sensitive official visits’. There was significant controversy over who were the politicians aboard this flight. It was later reported that Azam Khan, Mata Prasad Pandey and Shivpal Singh Yadav may have been onboard and had attended the South African wedding.

In the aftermath of the event, India’s High Commissioner Virendra Gupta (not related to the Gupta family) said publicly that the Indian High Commission was given permission to land the plane at Waterkloof Air Force Base. He explained that the Commission communicated through its defence adviser with the chief of defence for foreign relations in the SA National Defence Force (SANDF).

The charges against Gupta brothers could fill the pages of many articles. Just a glimpse into the family’s illustrious career does indicate that they are deeply entrenched in several corruption cases. Why the Uttarakhand government would indulge the family is a conundrum that deserves to be solved. The fact that it would “promote tourism” in a small state because the amount being spent on the wedding is large, certainly cannot be a justification for indulging corrupt businessmen who are being investigated across borders. One has to wonder if the Uttarakhand government missed the Gupta brother’s past, or there is some other angle that we might have missed.

Match Preview: Australia v Sri Lanka: Another easy win for Australia?

Another bright day for the cricket fans as no rain is forecasted for the match between Australia and Sri Lanka at The Oval. The rain has helped Sri Lanka in two games in which they had no chance of winning it but still earned one point from each match (Pakistan and Bangladesh). Australia will show no mercy in the upcoming contest.

Australia has dominated in most of the matches they played in this tournament. They should not have any problem in beating the weakest Sri Lankan team in the World Cup since 1992. The openers Finch and Warner are in excellent form and giving brilliant starts to their innings. The middle order hasn’t done anything significant so far, but they would be hoping to score some runs in this game. If Australia bats first then there is a high chance of them scoring 300 or against this toothless bowling attack.

Their bowlers Cummins and Starc have proved themselves as one of the best opening bowling pair. They shouldn’t have any problem in defending even a score of 200 or less.

Sri Lanka has plenty of problems, the whole team doesn’t look like a unit and has been in the news for more than usual due to off the field controversies, such as complaining about no swimming pool in the hotel, no extra leg space in the bus and so on.

The only bright spot Sri Lanka has is there bowling legend Malinga who still offers great line and length with slow yorkers which can disguise any batsman in the world. Though it will be a miracle for Sri Lanka to beat Australia, you never know as cricket is a funny game.

The weather at The Oval is perfect for a cricket match, bright sunny with mild wind.

Players to watch out

David Warner is in top form and has proved himself as one of the best batsmen around the world at this moment. He batted like a champion, scored a hundred against Pakistan, the 50s  against India and Afghanistan. Warner was failed only against one team, i.e., West Indies. He, along with Finch, can destroy any bowling attack.

Its high time for Angelo Mathews to deliver and if he doesn’t, then it will be curtains down for Sri Lanka in the tournament. He was the best bet for the young Sri Lankan team before they started their campaign. However, it seems like he is entirely out of touch, with two ducks in as many games shattered the hopes of Sri Lankan fans. However, if he does well, it will be an excellent thing for Sri Lanka.

Bengal government’s open abetment to lynch mob mentality has destroyed doctor-patient relationship in state, says doctor

West Bengal, already marred with rampant political violence and lack of law and order, is reeling now under an unprecedented crisis. The doctors are on strike. After a mob of over 200 men attacked the NRS Hospital in Kolkata, beating up resident doctors and wreaked havoc because of a 75-year-old Mohammad Syed’s death, the junior doctors had said enough is enough and had demanded protection from the government.

The state government’s apathy and lack of visible action against the mobilisers of the mob and CM Mamata Banerjee’s hostile attitude towards the doctors demanding safety and justice, has created a nation-wide movement. Doctors in West Bengal’s hospitals are resigning en masse to protest against the government.

Binayak Sinha, a well-known doctor in Kolkata, has penned an article today in the Economic Times, discussing the issue and the reasons behind the crisis. In the article titled “Intensive don’t care unit”, Dr Sinha mentions that the current crisis has not erupted suddenly, but has been brewing for quite some time until it reached a tipping point after the mob attack on NRS Hospital. The article in The Economic Times is curated as below:

Here’s a fact for this opinion page: West Bengal has had more than 175 episodes of violence against doctors and other healthcare professionals in the last two years alone.

Soft violence, verbal abuse and threats are things that doctors in both government and private hospitals face every day. These incidents are off the record and have been accepted as a part of their job. But this is something new, something else.

On June 11, a 75-year-old man died at the Nil Ratan Sircar (NRS) Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. On hearing the news, family members of the deceased threatened junior doctors present, alleging negligence on their part.

The young doctors took it in their stride. Two hours later, two lorries with 200-odd people arrived at the hospital, unleashing violence on doctors and other caregivers in front of a largely mute Kolkata Police contingent.

The hooligans started throwing bricks, with one such missile thrown at Paribaha Mukherjee, an intern who was not even involved in the care of the index patient. The son of a village schoolmaster and Anganwadi worker, Paribaha had entered medical school as a top performer in the medical entrance exam.

He now lies at a specialised neurological centre after having had brain surgery for a depressed fracture of the frontal bone. Paribaha now seems to be out of danger.

But his frontal lobe may have been damaged, and only time will tell whether he will regain full cerebration — the working of the brain.

So, when did this spiral of violence start? It can be dated back to a Town Hall meeting in February 2017 that chief minister Mamata Banerjee held with representatives of corporate hospitals. There, she bludgeoned these representatives, highlighting the ills that affect the private healthcare system — and rightly so, since much is wrong, and there is a dire need for introspection and reforms here.

But is it the job of corporates to correct the wrongs of an ailing public health policy and system? However, what this meeting actually succeeded in doing was provide a free pass to Bengal’s lumpen elements to openly attack hospitals, caregivers and doctors.

No Doctored Solution
Various bodies of doctors have protested over these last two years. Marches, vigils, black badges, ‘pen-down’ protests, memoranda to the CM, letters to newspaper editors, hunger strikes et al have all been tried, repeatedly.

All that the doctors have kept demanding is safety and security at the workplace. But the NRS Hospital attack has brought Bengal’s doctors to a tipping point. They have finally come together, boycotting outpatient services, seeking adequate security at hospitals.

They have now shut down emergency care or boycotted taking care of hospitalised patients. Even in corporate hospitals, patients have been tended to in outpatient departments with no fees charged as a mark of protest.

But, yes, patients are suffering. Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, who happens to be the chief minister’s nephew, has asked who will now bear the responsibility for taking care of the sick and the ailing.

He seems quite happy to forget that providing for patients is inextricably linked to providing security for their caregivers and that this is actually the responsibility of the government.

Mamata Banerjee has stated that since the police are regularly beaten up and never protest, junior doctors should follow suit. One can surmise that it is this attitude of the political establishment that has resulted in hooliganism and violence today being treated as ‘normal’ in every sphere of activity in Bengal.

The sacrosanct doctor-patient relationship lies destroyed by this open abetment to a lynch mob mentality by the administration. The proactive and verbose media do not waste a moment to publish and air news every time there’s a ‘Pulwama attack’ or a ‘Gauri Lankesh’ is gunned down. They are right to do so.

But they have been strangely silent over the last two years to the fact that the plight of the healthcare-giver has worsened. However, with this incident in NRS Hospital, and another mob attack at Burdwan Medical College two days later, the media have suddenly woken up, but with many sections ignoring the plight of doctors. Instead, they ask whether the protests and boycott are humane.

Nursing Our Society
Humanitarianism is the end point for all healthcare-givers, particularly doctors who spend their lives caring for the sick and accepting death on a day-to-day basis.

Does this mean that doctors, by dint of their profession, have no right to protest? If that is so, then the onus of protecting doctors being attacked by lynch mobs should also fall on those who refuse or fail to see the symbiotic relationship between the condition of the patient and that of his healthcare-giver.

So, what next? Civil society, media, professionals including doctors need to come together and stop this spiral of violence that seems to have become second nature in Bengal’s society.

This must be done in spite of the political forces currently at play. If this is not undertaken and achieved, even darker days loom on the horizon, for doctors as well as for patients. And, most importantly, for every citizen of West Bengal.
