If 2014 numbers hold, even opposition unity will not be able to trounce the BJP

The coalition of Congress and JDS, a regional party in Karnataka, has opened up the game for 2019 general elections. There was a sense of revival of an opposition in Karnataka yesterday as most of the opposition parties shared the stage to strategize for a united opposition or a ‘Grand Alliance’ to stop ‘The Modi Juggernaut’.

The narrative of an Anti-Modi front has brought an unusual combination of erstwhile political enemies such as SP and BSP in Uttar Pradesh, TMC and Communist parties in West Bengal. Similarly, JDS and Congress have allied together to form a government in Karnataka to make sure that they keep the BJP out of power. The decreasing relevance of some regional parties in electoral politics, with some parties like BSP, NCP and the two Communist Parties which are also facing an existential crisis, has made them design some sort of grand alliance so that they can have some impact on the power structure. But, the obvious question here is, ‘Can the unity of the opposition parties pull up the required numbers in the next Lok Sabha elections’?

The answer is much more complex. One can easily say that the opposition parties cannot rely simply on the math to win seats. The opposition is of the view that a loose coalition of parties fighting the BJP at the very local level will be more productive for them rather than making it a one on one presidential style of an election where all opposition parties would come together to contest against BJP. It can be said that SP-BSP will fight together locally in UP against BJP, with tactical support from Congress rather than a national coalition where one national party is supported by small regional parties. This is an unusual case, where a national party like Congress has relegated to a supporting party to many regional parties in different states, who are fighting the BJP on regional issues. It is also interesting to see that what the post-poll outcome of these alliances looks like.

A report by The Times of India, suggests that even the Anti-Modi front is to come up, it will not cause any substantial amount of damage to the BJP. The BJP might lose around 56 seats in total, nearly losing 46 seats in Uttar Pradesh alone. The report says that even strong regional parties like NCP, Shiv Sena in Maharashtra combining together cannot create that much of an impact against BJP. The BJP will lose only 10 seats in all states combined baring Uttar Pradesh. The general sense is that BJP will still emerge as the largest political party with 226 seats. The loose coalition or pre-poll understanding of opposition parties might not work as they seemed to have to project. The BJP has more traction on the ground as a ruling party and the opposition party doesn’t have a positive agenda as yet, to set a narrative for the next election. It has been a more of an ‘Anti-Modi’ front with a negative narrative of stopping BJP from forming the government rather than a positive story as offered by the BJP.

The united opposition can't defeat Modi

The Times of India has drawn up the above chart considering that the BJP is now in alliance with the JD(U) and assuming that BJP has a tie-up with AIADMK.

The Grand Alliance is trying to set an agenda to create popular resentment against the present dispensation. They have clung to fancy words of Democracy, Secularism, Constitutional values, etc. There are severe inherent contradictions within the coalition. For example, with Mamatha Banerjee in the coalition, they cannot have any moral high ground of speaking about being the ‘protectors’ of democracy and respecting the constitution. The utmost contempt for Constitutional values and democracy during the recent Panchayath polls in the state does not give them any right to criticize the present regime. Similarly, Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, who are out on bail for corruption charges cannot have the audacity to speak on the issues of corruption. The inclusion of AIUDF, Left parties will be laughable if they are seriously fighting against communalism.

It is also a question of the stability of the government; if at all the coalition forms the government. History has taught us that, the government formed on a negative narrative is bound to be a failed one. It happened in 1977 against Indira Gandhi, again in 1989 when the opposition came to stop Rajiv Gandhi and in 1996 some sort of coalition existed which created huge instability in governments. Generally, people tend to vote for an agenda based national party rather than an unstable coalition party. The Coalition has been a tried and tested model, which is often rejected by the people.

The most important point to be also considered is the transferability of the votes from one party to another coalition partner. The Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha by-election showed that the SP candidate got the votes of BSP supporters too, as there was an alliance between them. But, the SP vote base of Muslims, Yadavs, Gujjars and Jats tend to vote for a different party rather than voting to BSP, even if the candidate of the latter party is contesting from the same coalition. The transferability of votes might not happen as smoothly as the members of the alliance are expecting. Similarly, the core voters of Shiv Sena might not vote for NCP in Maharashtra. The Communist Parties and Trinamool Congress coming together to fight against BJP is unthinkable.

The voters are generally sceptical about the choices they tend to make in net elections. It is also interesting to see that, what narrative the ruling party will choose to play. It is most likely that the Modi led Government will stick on to the ‘Pro-Development’ plank and some social-engineering calculations pertaining to caste coalitions to garner enough numbers. One has to see what transforms after the 2019 elections. The citizen of this country will be expecting a majority, stable government rather than a fractured mandate.

After Rahul Gandhi has Kejriwalified himself, the original gets tossed into an oblivious corner

0

The way one discards a use-and-throw napkin, Congress President Rahul Gandhi, who has now completely Kejriwalified, seems to have relegated Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal to the shadows. During the oath-taking ceremony of JDS’ Kumaraswamy in Karnataka, Kejriwal got a surprise call, inviting him to be part of the ceremony. When everyone in the opposition got on stage and raised hands to show unity against Modi, as a curtain-raiser for 2019 elections, I tried to spot Kejriwal in there, but in vain.

sonia, mayawati, akhilesh, tejashwi
United Opposition from the stage in Karnataka

Many, like me, had the same question. Why wasn’t Kejriwal spotted on stage? Perhaps that is why Raghav Chadha, AAP’s spokesperson, who is accused of accessing confidential budget documents to ‘manage’ companies which donate to AAP, found the need to share Kejriwal’s pictures from Bengaluru.

But the fact is that Kejriwal is not taken seriously even in Opposition. It can be seen from the fact that he was snubbed and not invited for the Opposition meeting prior to Presidential Elections last year. He was also kept at bay during the gala dinner for Opposition hosted by Sonia Gandhi on a day 9 CRPF jawans were martyred. Hence, when he received a call to invite him for Kumaraswamy’s swearing in, he was probably surprised.

Even sworn enemies BSP’s Mayawati and SP’s Akhilesh Yadav were seen together on stage with others like CPI(M)’s Sitaram Yechury, whose party won even less than NOTA votes in Karnataka but Kejriwal was conspicuously absent from the ‘show of power’ photo op. Flashback little less than three years back from the ‘Mahagathbandhan’ days during Bihar elections, Kejriwal was prominently placed on the stage, hugging and sharing jokes with fodder scam convict and RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav.

The hug of good times.

Son of same Lalu was on stage in Karnataka, but Kejriwal couldn’t be spotted. But like every other politician worth his salt, Kejriwal couldn’t digest that he has reduced himself to a caricature. He was found retweeting stray image of himself on stage, sandwiched between Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

As we inch closer to 2019 General Elections, Kejriwal seems to be running the last mile towards oblivion.

Rahul Gandhi : The serial misleader

0

In any country which has a sane opposition, a debate filled with arguments and counter-arguments would take place, if the opposition is critical of a certain move by the government. This is, of course, the most desirable action that must take place in a healthy democracy.

But not in India.

It all started with a suggestion from the PMO calling for a new method of allotting services to successful UPSC candidates. Further, feedback was sought from departments and they were also asked to examine the feasibility of such a move.

Like any other policy of the government, opinion was divided with many for and against this move. In the political realm, the voice for those against this move was obviously given by Rahul Gandhi and the Congress, who have almost made it a habit to oppose anything and everything that the government does, irrespective of the merits of any move.

Rahul Gandhi, whose Twitter handle features on the ‘Must Follow List’ of many a Lutyens’ journalists, reacted to the news, not with facts but rather with plain rhetoric. He appealed to students to rise up against the evil plans of the RSS to snatch away their rights, because what’s better than anarchy on the streets of India? The tweet was filled with paranoia and bombast.

One is baffled after reading the tweet and is awestruck by this man who is endowed bountifully with the gift of imagination.

He says that the UPSC probationary officers will now be given appointments on the advice of the RSS. Even on multiple readings of the letter, I cannot make out anything that remotely has the same spelling as RSS. Then why exactly is Rahul Gandhi even creating unnecessary fear in the minds of people? This is especially dangerous since his tweets, powered by an all-mighty eco-system and bots from Kazaksthan and other places almost always manage to pop up on people’s Twitter timeline and soon starts to go viral.

He also used #ByeByeUPSC, as though the Government was completely doing away with the UPSC exams. Congress spokespersons and others soon jumped on the bandwagon with tweets like these.

A simple suggestion from the PMO soon became a weapon for the Congress to bash the RSS, bring in the caste system and of course, top it off with how India is now an autocratic country.

Hours later, another half-baked truth from Rahul Gandhi made itself out.

Rahul Gandhi claimed that the recent death of 9 civilians in TN is state-sponsored terrorism. This statement, devoid of facts and stuffed with hyperbole, is another example of how Gandhi manipulates a tragic incident into some sort of testament to how India is on its way to civil war. Rahul Gandhi never informed his followers the law and order was a state subject. That the RSS and BJP had nothing to do with what was being done by the state police in Tamil Nadu. He instead used lies to almost stir riots.

This twisting of facts by the Congress, to suit their agenda isn’t a one-off example. A few days back, when the Red Fort was adopted by the Dalmia Group, the official Twitter handle of the Congress posted this.

A brazen and outright lie.

Surely, a party whose most famous leader is given credit by people like Sagarika Ghose for educating Indians in English, would have had the knowledge to differentiate between adopting and leasing out. Here, it was merely an attempt by the Congress to malign the government by peddling outright lies. His newly minted ally, TMC, had actually supported this bill in the parliament earlier. There is no “selling” involved. But the lies have to be peddled by the party bereft of an agenda that might actually help the nation grow.

Nowhere has Rahul Gandhi or the Congress ever apologized for it. I don’t expect them to do so in the future.

Instead, he goes on spreading misinformation, gleefully helped by certain Youtubers and news outlets that publish hit-jobs.

But perhaps, the most well-known of Rahul Gandhi’s and indeed the Congress is that Modi would deposit 15 lakh in every citizen’s bank account. This has been repeated again and again, so much so that even common people on social media often bring one question to the forefront: Where is our 15 lakh? A classic example of how a lie, that has been repeated a thousand times, is eventually accepted as the truth.

Even though some aware citizens have pointed out that it the statement was twisted and that the PM had instead given an estimate of how much black money has been stashed abroad, Rahul Gandhi keeps reiterating the same outright lie. In fact, it is even carried by media houses without any sort of fact-checking at all.

This is all the more ironical since the Congress is now trying to lead a campaign called ‘Sach Bharat’ (Truthful India). But when Rahul Gandhi himself is a master of distorting facts which deceive gullible Indians, how can he masquerade around as the brand ambassador of India’s honesty?

These are just some of the examples. He lied to Karnataka traders. He lied in Gujarat. He lied about the Periyar statue vandalised in Tamil Nadu. He lied about Piyush Goyal. He is being sued for his lies about RSS, and the list is truly endless.

When Rahul Gandhi lies, it doesn’t become yet another lie. It almost becomes the truth, thanks to the many people who parrot whatever he says. He misleads people in the most brazen way, without any fear of backlash. This pattern of spreading fabrications, completely opposed to realities makes people unable to separate truth from falsehood. All this leads to paranoia, a state of fear in people’s minds which is definitely not desirable.

But what is even more troubling is that people buy whatever he says. That’s the power of the eco-system. People mindlessly believe all that Gandhi, has to say because it is being endorsed by his cheerleaders and then they form uninformed opinions. If one isn’t careful and does not point out publicly that Rahul Gandhi is lying, then 2019 may present difficulties.

Beware, as someone said, in the end, Truth triumphs but Lies get their turn first.

Demonetisation and GST impact? Direct tax collections soar to highest in 7 years

The net direct tax collections for the financial year 2017-18 has crossed Rs 10 lakh crores, which is significantly higher than the set budget target of 9.8 lakh crores. The Ministry of Finance yesterday announced the figures for the net direct tax collections for the fiscal year 2017-18.

The direct tax collections have seen an 18% year on year growth which is the highest in the last 7 years, as per the data released by the Finance Ministry. The Ministry states that demonetisation has made a very positive impact on the level of tax compliance in the country.

Just after the financial year ended Fiance secretary Hansmukh Adhia had informed that the provisional figures are showing the estimated Direct Taxes collected at 9.95 lakh crores which was 17.1 % higher than the taxes collected in the 2016-17 financial year. The net figures have surpassed the estimates.

The Finance Ministry has also stated that the robust growth in direct tax revenue in the years after demonetisation is an indicator of the positive impact of various tax policies of the government.

The Finance Ministry has also added that the growth in the revenue flow from Advanced Tax and self-assessment tax also has been exceptional. In the year 2017-18 the PIT (Personal Income Tax), Advanced Tax collections have increased by 23.4% and the PIT Self Assessment Tax has seen a 29.8% growth compared to the year 2016-17. In the last financial year too the growth rate for these two taxes were 26.1% and 25.6% respectively.

The Ministry has asserted that monetary policies and the measures taken by the Income Tax department have resulted in a major positive impact on direct tax payment by individual and non-corporate taxpayers. Here too, the ministry has emphasized the effect of demonetisation, adding that the subsequent use of bank deposit data by the I-T department has made a significant impact on voluntary tax payments.

Major Gogoi’s ‘arrest’: How stories have changed overnight

Yesterday, reports emerged which claimed that Major Leetul Gogoi of  “human shield” fame had been “arrested” in Kashmir. Various reports made various claims such as he was caught with a minor girl, in a “compromising position” etc. We had shown how all the reports contradicted each other.

Today, the same reports have changed their tune significantly. Starting with Outlook. Yesterday, their report had the following headline which said he was detained with a “girl”:

Today the same report has removed “girl” from the headline.

Further, the report now carries a note which clarifies that the female was not a minor, as per police

The Outlook report now also goes on to mention that Major Gogoi was “briefly” detained, indicating that he was not arrested and that he is not in police custody. A similar view was expressed by journalist Aditya Raj Kaul

Yesterday, another report from a portal called thekashmirpress.com was shared widely on social media. The report initially was titled as below:

Today the same report has changed the headline, and has dropped the word “minor” from the headline:

Once the investigation is over, it will be clear that at least one version of the news peddled by above media houses was fake, since overnight the version has changed.

Karnataka man of the match, DK Shivakumar is reportedly unhappy even as Opposition puts up a united front

Despite winning Karnataka as a consolation prize and having left to play second fiddle to JDS, the show of strength put up by anti-BJP Opposition leaves little to imagination what 2019 will be like.

Even as the congregation is trying to show all is happy within in the alliance, reports have emerged that cracks have appeared already in the convenient marriage. DK Shivakumar, Congress’ money and muscle power, who was very vocal about being chosen as deputy chief minister, had told media persons how he has ‘swallowed the pill‘ in the larger interest of the party. Former Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief G Parameshwara will now be made the deputy chief minister. DK Shivakumar, the man of the match who made the entire alliance between Congress and JDS possible, was instrumental in keeping the flock together before BJP’s floor test in which BS Yeddyurappa resigned after an emotional speech.

If recent reports are to be believed, Shivakumar wants his pound of flesh, having played the crucial role of keeping the elected MLAs at his resort in an attempt to stop them from defecting to the BJP. DK Shivakumar now wants to be made the KPCC, a post which is now vacant with G Parameshwara as deputy chief minister) as well as the energy minister, a portfolio he held in previous Siddaramaiah government. However, it appears, both his demands may not be fulfilled. No portfolio is likely to be announced before the floor test is carried out on Friday where JDS and Congress will have to prove majority on the Assembly floor so that it does not ‘upset’ anyone in either of the parties.

There are reports that DK Shivakumar, who is already upset with not being given due attention, has even complained to Congress President Rahul Gandhi. Rahul Gandhi reportedly ‘pacified’ him by reminding him of the circumstances in which the coalition has come into being. Perhaps Shivakumar has given up his dignity to save Congress’ face in the ‘give and take‘ policy of Congress.

BJP’s former Rajasthan chief receives death threats via WhatsApp

Ashok Parnami the former BJP state chief in Rajasthan has been receiving death threats via WhatsApp, PTI has reported. As per BJP’s spokesperson Anand Sharma, Parnami received the first in the series of life threatening messages on Sunday. The message supposedly demanded that Pranami pay extortion money in the next three days to escape his fate.

The report claims that Pranami didn’t pay much heed to the initial threats after which the unknown criminal threatened to kill his family, which resulted in the lodging of a police complaint.

As per a Bhaskar report, the extortionist introduced himself as Ali Baba Bundel and even threatened Parnami via a WhatsApp call. After the police was informed, they heightened the security in front of the BJP leader’s house and started investigating the phone numbers, via which the threats are being sent.

A local report by Patrika claims that the threats are being made by individuals based in Dubai. As per the report, in light of the threats, security has been extended to the family members of Pranami and a total of 17 policemen have been deputed for the same. A police picket too has been established in front of Pranami’s house.

The report details that following the text on Monday which threatened to kill Pranami’s family members, the police was informed but the authorities didn’t associate much weight to it.

Later as per the report, the accused was identified as a notorious criminal who even chided the police to adopt newer techniques if they wished to catch him. Following this the security was beefed up.

Despite police involvement the threats have continued, one of which was received at 5:35 PM on Tuesday. The accused was seen online on the messaging service till 7:30 PM on Tuesday.

Owing to the police taking the matter seriously, they have decided to involve the Anti Terror Squad (ATS) officials in the case to try and nab the accused.

Too many loopholes in initial reports alleging arrest of Major Gogoi

Major Leetul Gogoi had become a national hero last year, when he employed an odd but unique solution to save army men from a crowd of stone-pelters in Kashmir. In order to stop the situation from getting volatile and causing casualties on both sides, Major Gogoi had tied one of the stone-pelters to the army jeep so that stone-pelting stops. He was later awarded Chief of Army Staff’s Commendation Card for sustained efforts in counter-insurgency operations.

Now reports have emerged which claim that he has been “arrested” in Kashmir. The details of the incident are yet to be clear, but multiple versions are doing the rounds.

One of the earliest versions of this story was published in a Kashmiri site called thekashmirwalla.com. This story was shared by many including journalist Sagarika Ghose who herself has been caught sharing fake news on Twitter very often. This story itself has conflicting versions. First, it claims that “locals” say they caught Major Gogoi in a “compromising position” with a teenage girl

However, the same report later states that the hotel receptionist did not allow the girl and her companion to meet Gogoi. This version has been repeated in a video, which is alleged to be of the manager of the hotel.

This same line of “compromising position” was then repeated by another portal called globalkashmir.net

Next, as the initial report in the thekashmirwalla.com claims, one woman and one man had allegedly come to meet Major Gogoi. Yet, the popular version of this news says Major Gogoi arrested with a girl. For example this report in thekashmirpress.com, is headlined: “Major Gogoi arrested along with minor girl from Srinagar hotel” and claims that he had come to the hotel with a minor girl. There is no mention of the companion.

Outlook magazine too followed the same style, although its report clearly stated that a man too was accompanying the girl.

Next, the report in Kashmirpress as above, and the video of the manager claim that the girl was a minor. Journalist Barkha Dutt also claims that reporters from Kashmir have said the same.

But the first story by thekashmirwalla.com claims that documents showed that the girl was born in 1999, which means she could have been over 18 years old, but definitely not 16 as per above screenshot.

Co-founder of alleged “fake news busting site” Alt-News too claimed that locals alleged the girl is a minor. These same locals have claimed the “compromising position” when the receptionist and other reports claimed that he did not allow them to meet at all.

Users also questioned the logic of using own name, credit card and online booking method, if the room was to be used for questionable purposes

Details are still emerging but there are too many conflicting reports. Whether the girl came alone or with another male. Whether the girl was a minor or not. Whether the girl met Major Gogoi and was caught in a “compromising position” or was stopped from meeting by the hotel receptionist. Whether Major Gogoi has been arrested or detained. All these questions are yet to be answered.

This incident happens to be during the unilateral ceasefire announced by the Indian Government during the month of Ramzan. However, terrorists have not paid heed to this ceasefire and have attacked army personnel as well as civilians.

Javadekar takes a dig at Rahul Gandhi’s Prime Ministerial ambitions, says ‘there is no ban on day-dreaming’

0

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar took a dig at Rahul Gandhi on Rahul’s remark about him being ready to become the next Prime Minister. Javadekar stated that there is no ban on anyone’s wish to ‘day-dream’.

Rahul Gandhi recently commented on how he would want to be the Prime minister if his party becomes the largest party after 2019 general elections and was severely mocked by one and all.

Javadekar continued his offensive by laying out the current political scenario of the country. He stated, “the Congress has lost 20 states and it is in power only in a couple of states now. If on that basis, Gandhi is thinking of becoming the prime minister, then there is no ban on day-dreams in this country,”

The Union Minister commented about the pragmatism that is needed for real politic and the difference between opinions generating from a position of presumption and reality and said, “smart tweet or big talk is not politics. It is much more than that.”

Reflecting upon the past and the need to learn from it, Minister brought about the reference to his own parties crisis period from 1984 when it had only two lawmakers in Loksabha to winning 282 seats in 2014.  He commented that there are lessons to be learned by the Congress from the BJP’s example.

When asked about the recent political conundrum in Karnataka, he said, “when we realized that we do not have the sufficient strength, our chief minister (B S Yeddyurappa) stepped down.”

On their commitment to bringing perpetrators to justice, and specific steps taken in the context of the recent Punjab National Bank the BJP leader said, “It happened during Congress period but we have arrested more than 13 people in connection with the case. We will seize their properties spread across the country.”

Explaining the meaning of ‘Congress-Free India’’, he said that crony-politics, lobbying and passing on benefits only to select people are what needs to end. “The bad culture in politics, introduced by the Congress, is what we have been opposing.”

Commenting on the 400 schemes initiated y the BJP lead central government with an outlay of Rs. 3.25 lakh crores which get directly deposited into recipient’s bank account. He mentioned, Rajiv Gandhi’s comment about corruption-

“The then prime minister, Rajiv Gandhi, had once said that if he sends Rs. 100 to the people, only Rs. 15 would reach actually. It was the Congress in power, from the Centre to village, and leaders were syphoning off money. We have stopped it,”

Over 39 lakh jobs created in the last 7 months till March this year, reveals EPFO data

As per reports, according to the data presented by the retirement fund body Employment Provident Fund Organisation‘s (EPFO) payroll 39.36 lakh new jobs were created in the last 7 months ending March this year.

Latest data revealed that as many as 6.13 lakh new jobs were created in the month of March this year, which is higher than 5.89 lakh payrolls with the EPFO in February this year.

The various sections where job creation was substantially seen across all age brackets were electric, mechanical or general engineering products followed by building and construction industry, trading & commercial establishments and textiles. The states where nearly half of these jobs were created were Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat during the seven-month period till March this year.

Some experts expressed their ambiguity on the data released by EPFO, last month, saying that the estimates may include temporary employees whose contributions may not be continuous for the entire year. However, the EPFO has uploaded the data with disclaimers that the data for most recent months are provisional as updating of employees records is a continuous process and are likely to be updated in subsequent months.

Earlier EPFO had indicated that job creation in the non-farm sector had been the lowest in four months during February 2018. According to tentative estimates released by the retirement fund body, 4,72,075 new members were registered with it in February, compared with 6,04,557 in January. In December 2017, the number of new members with the EPFO stood at 5,57,633, while it got 6,47,019 new registrants in November 2017.

EPFO had been in news earlier when the personal and professional details of about 2.7 crore members registered with the EPFO have been exposed to data theft. In a letter to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, the Central Provident Fund Commissioner had written that hackers have stolen data from the Aadhaar seeding portal of EPFO. He has also asked the ministry’s technical team to plug vulnerabilities on the portal aadhaar.epfoservices.com that has now been temporarily shut.

The Employment Provident Fund Organisation manages social security funds of workers in the organized/semi-organized sector in India. It has more than 6 crore active members (with an at least one-month contribution during the year).
