Exclusive: RTI reveals Kejriwal govt yet to pay compensation to families of 79 police officials who died in line of Covid duty

A Right to Information (RTI) reply has revealed that Arvind Kejriwal led-AAP government in Delhi is yet to pay ₹1 crore compensation to the families of 79 police officials who died in line of COVID-19 duty between 2020-2021.

The query was filed by activist Vivek Pandey in February this year, wherein he sought information about the deceased Covid warriors whose families received compensation from the Delhi government until January 2024.

In its response on 21st February, the Revenue Department of the government stated that about 92 families had received a compensation of ₹1 crore till January 2024.

It must be mentioned that in 2020, the Kejriwal government had announced to compensate the families of healthcare workers, who died in the line of COVID-19 duty., to the tune of ₹1 crore.

Later, the Delhi CM expanded the list of beneficiaries to include civil defence personnel, teachers, policemen and firemen.

Arvind Kejriwal said in April 2020, “We started the scheme to cover any doctor, nurse, lab technician or hospital sanitation worker contracting the infection and dying during the course of duty. There are other people too who are looking after corona patients – policemen, civil defence volunteers, teachers and fire service personnel. If anyone contracts coronavirus and dies while attending to corona patients, their families will also be given Rs 1 crore.”

Screengrab of the news report in The Times of India

A report published by The Times of India on 2nd December last year highlighted that families of 79 police officials, who died serving COVID-19 patients, had not received compensation from the Delhi government.

While arguing before the Delhi High Court, the government had acknowledged that only families of 92 Covid Warriors had been compensated until then. It had even tried to insinuate that the 79 deceased police officials somehow did not die due to COVID-19 duty.

The Delhi High Court had rapped the AAP govt, “Announcements are made first then some reverse engineering is done…you are asking the police department for more documents after rejecting the list of names they sent as those eligible for compensation…You should have done this exercise before rejecting their claim. If the police department itself is sending you names means they must have vetted it, what more documents you need.

Given that the RTI query was filed in February this year and there has not been any increase in the number of beneficiaries, it signifies that the pending compensation of the 79 deceased police officials has not been cleared.

In a tweet, Vivek Pandey wrote, “#RTI shows Kejriwal govt hasn’t compensated families of 79 covid warriors police officials till date. Why these families have to approach court? “Shame on govt”

This is however not the first time that the AAP government in Delhi tried to deny compensation to families of deceased Covid-19 warriors.

OpIndia had reported in January 2021 how the family of deceased Delhi police constable, Amit Kumar, was not paid any compensation despite the assurance of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in May 2020.

In November 2023, the Delhi High Court directed the AAP government to release ₹1 crore for the kin of the Covid Warrior.

Given that it took more than 3 years for the family of Amit Kumar to receive compensation, it needs to be seen when the Delhi government live upto its promises in case of 79 other police officials who died in line of Covid duty.

UP: Woman’s family sets in-laws’ house ablaze after she commits suicide over dowry harassment in Prayagraj, two dead

In a shocking incident in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagraj district, the parents of a woman, who had allegedly died by suicide, set ablaze the house of her in-laws killing two persons on Monday (18th March).

The matter pertains to the Mutthiganj police station area in Prayagraj. The family members of the deceased girl identified as Anshika Kesarwani set ablaze the house of her in-laws after her alleged suicide leaving five injured. The fire brigade team managed to rescue the five members of Anshika’s husband Anshu Kesarwani’s family, however, her in-laws were burnt alive. The police recovered the dead bodies of the two during the search operation.

According to reports, Anshika, the wife of furniture trader Anshu Kesarwani, committed suicide on Monday (18th March) in a room at her in-laws’ residence. When the girl’s family learned about this, they went to her house late at night and created an uproar, accusing the Kesarwanis of dowry harassment. Anshika’s family protested after placing her body on the road. Meanwhile, they allegedly set fire to Anshu’s furniture shop which is adjacent to the family home.

According to reports, the Kesarwani family got stuck inside the house when the door caught fire. The cops were able to save victims on the first and second floors. Later, during the searches, police found the burned bodies of Anshu Kesarwani’s parents, Shobha and Rajendra Kesarwani. The bodies of the dead were sent for postmortem examination. Notably, 26-year-old Anshika, a Dhoomanganj resident, married Anshu Kesarwani in February last year.

According to an ETV Bharat report, Anshika Kesarwani locked herself in a room before hanging herself on Monday at around 3 p.m. Following this, her in-laws alerted her parents, who arrived. After busting down the door to the room, they found Anshika’s body hanging. They then confronted the Kesarwani family, accusing them of harassing Anshika for dowry. The verbal confrontation quickly escalated into physical violence, with Anshika’s family members allegedly setting fire to the house and locking the door from the outside.

DCP City Deepak Bhukar stated that around 11:00 p.m. on Monday, the Muthiganj police station received information that a woman identified as Anshika Kesarwani had committed suicide in her in-laws’ home. Both parents’ and in-laws’ families were present on the scene. As soon as the information was received, the police arrived at the location. During this time, people on both sides were fighting among themselves. Meanwhile, the people from the maternal side set fire to the in-laws’ residence. Five people were rescued and brought out by police. Two dead bodies were found at 3 p.m.

The situation took a challenging turn for the police and fire tenders as a crowd gathered outside the residence of the Kesarwani family. According to reports when the furniture shop was set on fire, the locals present at the spot advised the Kesarwani family to stay inside the house instead of asking them to move towards the roof or balcony making the situation worse for them. Initially, it was claimed that Anshu along with his parents had fled the spot, however, it was revealed later that his parents were stuck on the third floor when their dead bodies were recovered.

‘I forgot because of Covid’: How NDTV, propagandists and left-liberals promoted journalist Poonam Agarwal’s lies on Electoral Bonds

On 18th March, the fortress of lies around Electoral Bonds raised by The Quint’s former journalist Poonam Agarwal fell like a house of cards after she admitted to having “forgotten” about the Electoral Bond she bought in 2020. Agarwal, who was once booked for abetment of the suicide of a soldier, claimed that she purchased two Electoral Bonds in 2018. Still, the list released by the Election Commission of India had her name listed as a buyer in 2020.

Interestingly, when a video she made for The Quint revealed she bought an Electoral Bond in 2020, Agarwal conveniently blamed it on “Covid” and said she did not remember buying the bond in 2020. According to her, it was because of COVID-19 that she forgot, as “a lot was happening during that time.”

The post where she lied about not buying a bond in 2020 is still on X. Source: X

She wrote, “Clarification: I have come across a video that I recorded at The Quint in which I am showing an #ElectoralBond dated 20/10/2020. I don’t remember purchasing a bond in 2020 but only in 2018. Unique number will clear many doubts. Till then let’s not question SBI data. One can blame it on my poor memory. 2020 was COVID outbreak year, many things were happening. Maybe that’s why I don’t remember it. My apologies for my poor memory.”

She blamed “COVID” for her poor memory. Source: X

While she blatantly lied about “the mismatch” in Electoral Bond data and admitted only after SBI clarified in the Supreme Court that the hidden number on bonds are only for security and not for auditing, left-liberals and a section of media houses presented her as the ‘messiah’ of truthful journalism. Notably, SBI categorically clarified that the number on the bond was just a security feature and it was not added to the records.

It is notable here that Poonam’s “realisation’ about her alleged memory loss came only after the SC hearing where SBI asserted that the codes hidden on bonds (which Poonam had used to make her claims) are for security reasons only and not for tracking details or auditing.

Propaganda website the The Wire, which has a history of making wild claims and then retracting their articles, retracted another article on Poonam’s lie, with a clarification that they are removing the article because Poonam’s claims “cannot be substantiated.”

Congress’s chairperson of Social and Digital Platforms, Supriya Shrinate, praised Agarwal for “exceptional work” while calling Electoral Bonds a “scam”. She wrote, “Kudos to Poonam Agarwal for some exceptional work on the bond scam. Her latest expose raises serious concerns on the data shared by SB. She bought the bond in April 2018, but SBI’s data showed that it was bought in October 2020. How?”

Congress has received over 1400 crores through electoral bonds, the same bonds that Congress leaders are calling a ‘scam’.

Tamil Nadu minister Dr P Thiaga Rajan quoted Agarwal and wrote, “This causes grave concern,  not only about the veracity of the data submitted by SBI (as filing a false affidavit or data to the SC would be a prosecutable criminal action), but about the basic platform/systems or SBI. Don’t see how it is fit to be a bank taking public deposits.”

X user Swati Mishra, who quoted Poonam and questioned SBI over the authentication of the data, added an update. Poonam “forgot” about buying the bond but did not apologise or delete the post from X.

Journalist-turned-YouTuber Sanket Upadhyay, who runs a YouTube ‘news’ channel, The Red Mike, quoted Poonam’s so-called expose on Electoral Bonds and said, “This raises an even bigger question. Is the data even real?” However, he deleted the post after Poonam admitted to bluntly lying, claiming she had forgotten about it. However, screenshots of his post are available on social media.

Interestingly, in an interview on his channel, he tried to justify her blatant lie after Poonam admitted she “forgot” about the 2020 purchase. During a live discussion, he questioned the “date mismatch” story, to which Agarwal replied she would not say anything about it as she did not remember buying a bond in 2020. Sanket said, “Fair enough. One thing is that you mischief based on the information. On the other hand, you say I have the information but cannot say anything about it as I don’t have complete information about it. This is not mischief. This is reporting where Poonam is clearing her position.”

Sumit Awasthi of NDTV promoted her on the channel. However, till this report was published, Awasthi did not issue any clarification.

Another journalist-turned-YouTuber, Ajit Anjum, deleted his post after Agarwal admitted to “forgetting” that she bought a bond in 2020. In the now-deleted post, Anjum called it a “serious matter” and questioned SBI what exactly happened there as Agarwal claimed she did not buy a bond in 2020.

The spokesperson of the Samajwadi Party, Neha Yadav, quoted Poonam Agarwal and said, “Electoral Bond theft is a serious matter. SBI is involved in this theft.”

Congress spokesperson Lavanya Ballal Jain said, “Will SBI explain itself or hide behind legalese? Remember state bank of Mysore being merged with SBI after being an associate bank for decades?”

Source: X

Journalist Akhilesh Tiwari said, “It is a serious matter. It means that the list that has come out is incorrect.”

Source: X

National President of Indian Youth Congress, Srinivas BV, quoted Poonam Agarwal and said, “Modi’s guarantee. Scam in data in association with SBI.”

Source: X

The propagandists, left-liberals and a section of media came out running to use the lie presented by Poonam Agarwal to target the Government of India, the Electoral Bond scheme and the State Bank of India. However, when the lie got busted, they either deleted the posts, jumped to support her or let the lies remain on social media for “eternity”. In any case, ethically they should have removed the post and apologised for supporting a lie but it did not happen.

Uttar Pradesh: American and Korean nationals attend Christian missionaries event in Ghaziabad, complaint lodged for attempting conversion of poor

0

On Sunday (17th March), in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, a case of alleged attempt at Christian conversion surfaced, sparking agitation from Hindu organisations who mobilised in protest at the event. Allegations have been made against Christian missionaries, accusing them of deceitfully attempting to convert poor Hindus.

The police responded by registering a case and detaining several individuals, while documents about Christianity were seized from the premises. Additionally, the presence of foreigners at the gathering has been reported, adding complexity to the ongoing investigation.

The incident unfolded within the jurisdiction of the Kaushambi police station in Ghaziabad. Members of Hindu organizations filed a complaint at the police station, detailing that on Sunday, outsiders distributed pamphlets advocating Christianity among economically disadvantaged Hindu families in the Kaushambi area. These pamphlets urged everyone to assemble at a designated location. The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) was also alerted to the gathering. Upon arrival, numerous VHP activists found several minors, including foreign nationals, among those present.

VHP activists claim that Hindus were enticed with monetary incentives at the gathering. Along with this money, they were provided with books containing content on various religions, causing confusion among attendees. Following the outcry from Hindu organizations, the police intervened at the venue. It is reported that the police were not informed beforehand about the program. Initially, they calmed the protesting crowd before escorting the event organizers to the police station. OpIndia possesses a copy of the complaint.

Among those present on the stage, individuals from USA and Korea have also been identified. Women were also among the organizers. Several individuals have been detained and are currently undergoing questioning. OpIndia discovered the distributed pamphlet, bearing the headline “Remember the Sacrifice of Jesus.” Below, it features a biblical quote from Luke 22:19, urging readers to “Do so in remembrance of me.” The pamphlet issues a call for all individuals to gather at 7:45 p.m. on 24th March 2024, at Park Crown Banquet Hall, Kaushambi. Alongside this call, there is an invitation to commemorate the death of Jesus this year.

Another pamphlet also mentions a special speech based on the Bible. Its title is, “The Dead Will Come Back to Life. It is reality, not a dream.” For more information, a website named jw.org and its barcode are also printed. The copyright of all these is said to be with the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society in Pennsylvania, USA. Other pamphlets being circulated carry questions such as “What the world will be like when Satan’s reign ends” and “Will the dead come back to life?” At present, the Ghaziabad police have not yet issued any official statement on this matter. The police statement will be updated in the news when it is released.

The News Minute claims Torrent Pharma donated entire Rs 185 crore of electoral bonds purchase to BJP in quid pro quo, doesn’t mention donation made to AAP

On Friday (15th March), propaganda web portal The News Minute published a report titled “‘Close’ to Modi, exempt from taxes: Torrent Group bought electoral bonds worth Rs 185 Cr” to insinuate quid pro quo between BJP and electoral bonds donor Torrent Group.

Danya Rajendran – the editor of The News Minute – also shared a post on her X handle to establish a link between the two without concrete proof. However, it has emerged that the Torrent Group has donated money to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) too among others.

How The News Minute peddled misleading claims?

In its report, The News Minute mentioned that in 2019, then Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis granted “a company” exemption from paying property taxes of Rs 285 crore. “After the Election Commission released SBI’s data on electoral bonds last night, we now know the same company bought electoral bonds worth Rs 185 crore from May 7, 2019, to January 10, 2024,” The News Minute claims.

The report goes on to claim that Torrent Pharma’s chairman emeritus Sudhir Mehta is close to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, insinuating that this close association with the top BJP brass earned exemptions for the company in Maharashtra.

TNM went on to establish how Adani and Mehta had been PM Modi’s “old friends” and had stood down CII when it “came down heavily on Modi in 2003 when he was CM shortly after Gujara riots”.

What with its intent to pin a charge on PM Modi using the issue of electoral bonds, TNM conveniently left out a significant piece of information that Torrent Group had also donated Rs 1 crore to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The Torrent Group donated Rs 1 Cr to AAP

TNM essentially implied that all the Rs 185 cr spent by the Torrent Group to purchase the electoral bonds were given to the BJP alone. However, there is no proof backing this claim.

On the other hand, it is well established that the group gave Rs 1 Cr to the Aam Aadmi Party by purchasing their electoral bonds before the 2019 general elections. AAP is among the ten political entities that disclosed their donors on Sunday, 17th March.

According to AAP’s submission to the ECI, the Bajaj Group stands out as the party’s primary donor of electoral bonds. This detail subsequently appeared on the ECI’s website and was presented before the Supreme Court.

Between 23rd April 2018, and 25th May 2019, the party received electoral bonds totalling Rs 5.75 crores from various contributors.

Following the data required by the Supreme Court and disseminated by the ECI, AAP garnered a cumulative sum of Rs 65.45 crores from 18th April 2019 to 26th July 2023, positioning it as the 11th highest recipient of electoral bonds among political entities.

On 10th April 2019, the Bajaj Group extended a donation of Rs 3 crores to AAP, distributed in three equal parts. It also reveals that AAP received Rs 1 Cr from the Torrent Group. It is also reportedly the 10th largest donor donating to political parties.

Ludhiana resident arrested for stabbing wife to death in Canada a week after reaching there, victim’s sister says he sent video of dead body to show family

In a horrifying case, a Luhiana resident was recently arrested in Canada for allegedly stabbing his wife to death, as reported by Canadian media CBC. According to reports, the accused identified as Jagpreet Singh had arrived in Canada only a week prior to the incident. After stabbing his wife to death, the accused purportedly made a video call to his mother and showed his wife’s dead body over the phone.

The incident took place, a week after Singh reached Canada, on late Friday night (15th March) in Abbotsford, Canada. The deceased victim has been identified as Balwinder Kaur (41) a resident of Mallah village of Jagraon.

According to reports in the Canadian media, “Abbotsford police (AbbyPD) responded to reports of an assault in progress in a home along Wagner Drive on Friday, March 15, around 10:50 pm.” Later, the Police officials found Kaur inside the home with life-threatening stab wounds. Despite efforts by the first responders to save her life, she died because of stab wounds.

CBC News reported that Balwinder Kaur’s husband Jagpreet Singh was charged with second-degree murder in relation to the fatal stabbing. He was arrested on the scene.

Meanwhile, her family said that their daughter was stabbed to death by her husband Jagpreet Singh alias Raju (50). He is a resident of Kanchan Colony, Pakhowal Road, Ludhiana. According to the family of the deceased woman, Jagpreet Singh had gone to Canada just a week ago.

Speaking with The Indian Express, her sister, Rajwinder Kaur said, “After stabbing my sister to death, Jagpreet made a video call to his mother back home in Ludhiana and said ‘main ehnu sadaa layi sulaata (I have put her to sleep forever).”

She added that Jagpreet was obsessed with thoughts of reaching Canada, and since Balwinder had reached there, he was forcing and harassing her to arrange his travel at the earliest. The couple also had regular arguments related to finances as Jagpreet had stopped working and was unemployed, the sister of the deceased victim added.

Recalling the harrowing 15th March incident, Rajwinder said that Jagpreet made a video call to his mother in Ludhiana while his son Gurnoor was also around.

According to her, Jagpreet turned the camera towards Balwinder who was lying unconscious, with blood all around. Seeing the blood, everyone on the other side, including his mother, Gurnoor, and other family members started screaming. They asked if Balwinder was alright. Then Jagpreet said, “I have put her to sleep forever.”

Later, the couple’s son Gurnoor informed everyone stating, “Papa ne mummy numaar ditta (our father killed our mother),” as per her aunt Rajwinder.

Demanding justice for her sister, Rajwinder said, “We were not on talking terms with Jagpreet since he had started harassing my sister. Saada taa sab kuch chala gaya (We have lost our everything). We just want the strictest punishment for him now.”

She further told The Indian Express that Balwinder and Jagpreet got married in 2000 and they had two children – a daughter Harnoorpreet Kaur (22) and a son Gurnoor Singh (18).

She stated that their daughter Harnoorpreet had gone to Canada around four years ago on a study visa but she started facing health issues.

Kaur, the deceased victim’s sister, continued, “Then my sister Balwinder went to Canada in 2022 to take care of her daughter. However, since the time she had reached there, her husband was constantly hectoring her to call him to Canada at the earliest. My sister was taking care of all expenses alone as Jagpreet had stopped working. Earlier, he used to work as a driver, but when my sister started sending him money, he stopped working. Balwinder was not only managing the expenses of her daughter’s medical treatment and education alone but also used to send money to Jagpreet. But even then, he was harassing her to call him to Canada.”

According to Rajwinder, her sister worked at a private hospital in Ludhiana to run the household and in Canada, she was working at a store. She had also incurred some debt and borrowed money from her siblings to send her daughter to Canada. However, Jagpreet used to harass her and say that she would have to repay the debt on her own as he won’t contribute to it.

By the acts of corruption and conspiracy in the formulation and implementation of Delhi Excise Policy 2021-22, a continuous stream of illegal funds in the form of kickbacks, from the wholesalers was generated for the AAP, ED said as quoted by news agency ANI.

The financial probing agency added that in the entire conspiracy, K Kavitha and her associates had planned not only to recover the proceeds of crime paid in advance to AAP, but also to further generate profits/proceeds of crime.

Sharing the details and update about the case, ED said that it arrested K Kavitha on 15th March in the Delhi Liquor Policy Scam case. Subsequently, New Delhi’s Special PMLA Court gave her remand to ED. The agency has been granted permission for custodial interrogation for 7 days till 23rd March.
