Thane: Wazir Sheikh alias Yusuf Baba and 6 others arrested for luring women through promises of ‘rain of money’ and blackmailing them with comprising videos

On Saturday (2nd March), Thane police (crime branch) revealed that they have arrested 7 accused including Wazir Sheikh alias Yusuf Baba for running a sextortion racket under the guise of a false godman. The accused used to lure the women with false promises and asked them to remove their clothes to get their desired results. The secretly filmed videos of these women would later be used to blackmail them and extort money from them. The gang deceived 17 women before getting nabbed.

Saheblal Wazir Sheikh alias Yusuf Baba used to work with a gang, that used to trap innocent and poor women and girls living in bad circumstances. First, a woman or a girl was brought to Yusuf Baba by saying that he would end all the troubles, he would get a huge amount of money for them, and he would make them rich.

Yusuf Baba used to talk about performing some rituals in the name of black magic. In this ritual, women would be asked to remove their clothes and get naked. Then the self-styled Baba godman Yusuf Baba would claim that a soul had descended upon him and asked him to have physical relations with the women. He would claim that by doing this, that soul would be satisfied and would rain money for these women. Trapped women would be forced to do so. The entire incident would then be videographed. These videos would be used to blackmail the women and extort money from them.

The racket was exposed when the police were looking for a 5-year-old girl from Rabodi in Thane who went missing a few days ago. The investigation led to the arrest of two persons, identified as Aslam Khan (age 54) and Salim Shaikh (age 45) on 25th February. They revealed the details of this sextortion racket of Yusuf Baba who was arrested later.

Inspector Krishna Kokni of Thane Crime Branch Unit I said, “We believe this gang, which includes two women, ensnared at least 17 persons. The seven arrests were made from Thane, and Vasai in Palghar and neighbouring Mumbai. Our probe found that Yusuf Baba and his associates lured financially vulnerable women by promising them riches through black magic. Some of the rituals included the participation of women in the nude.”

He added, “A case of kidnapping, rape, cheating and other offences under IPC has been registered with Rabodi police station and further probe into this racket is underway. The accused have also been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and Maharashtra Prevention and Eradication of Human Sacrifice and other Inhuman and Aghori Practices and Black Magic Act 2013.”

Bangladesh: Fire accident kills journalist ‘Abhishruti Shashtri’, last rites on hold after family claims victim was Muslim

On Thursday (29th February), a 25-year-old journalist named Abhishruti Shashtri lost her life in a fire accident. The incident took place at a commercial building on Bailey Road in Dhaka city of Bangladesh.

The victim was working with ‘TheReport.live’ at the time of her death. The fire accident claimed the lives of at least 46 people, most of whom died due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

On Friday (1st March) morning, the colleagues of Abhishruti Shashtri identified her body which was kept at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s burn unit.

While speaking about the matter to The Business Standard, a colleague of the deceased informed, “Abhishruti (Shashtri) spoke to me yesterday afternoon. She was scheduled to join my team at barta24.com today.”

The victim primarily covered election news for ‘TheReport.live’. The biggest twist in the case surfaced when the alleged father of Shashtri, identified as one Shahburul Alam Sabuj, went to the Sheikh Hasina Burn Institute to claim her body.

He claimed that the deceased was not a Hindu but a Muslim by the name of ‘Brishti Khatun.’ However, Shahstri’s friends and colleagues have claimed that she always identified as a Hindu.

The hospital authorities then cross-verified her voter identity card and her fingerprints with the government database and found them to be registered in the name of ‘Brishti Khatun.’

Following an uproar over the controversy, the hospital retained the body of the victim and is now awaiting a DNA test.

While speaking about the ordeal, Sabuj said, “I wanted to raise my girl to be a prominent figure in the future. My daughter always told me ‘Baba, don’t worry. I will be a good human being”.

“My daughter never wanted to take money from me. She used to say, ‘I can take care of myself. You don’t need to worry, Baba’. I had so many hopes and dreams, all of those ended. I used to say that village girls can’t do anything better. But I will go to the village and say that my daughter does a lot of things. What will I take to the village now?” he added.

Pakistan-bound ship from China stopped at Mumbai port over suspected nuclear cargo

Security agencies at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva port intercepted and seized a consignment destined for Karachi, Pakistan, from a ship originating in China, citing dual-use implications for Pakistan’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs. Officials reported on Saturday that the Malta-flagged merchant ship, CMA CGM Attila, was halted on January 23rd based on intelligence received by customs officials. Upon inspection, they discovered a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine manufactured by an Italian company known for its precision and efficiency when controlled by a computer system.

A team from the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) examined the consignment and confirmed its potential use in Pakistan’s nuclear initiatives, particularly in manufacturing critical components for missile development. CNC machines are classified under the Wassenaar Arrangement, an international arms control regime aimed at curbing the spread of items with both civilian and military applications, with India being an active participant. Notably, North Korea has previously used similar CNC machines in its nuclear program.

Further investigations revealed discrepancies in the shipping details, suggesting potential evasion tactics to conceal the true recipients. This incident follows previous seizures of dual-use military-grade items transiting from China to Pakistan, raising concerns about illicit procurement activities. The ongoing probe seeks to determine whether the suspected Pakistani entities receiving these items have connections to the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DESTO), responsible for Pakistan’s defence research and development.

Port officials, acting on specific intelligence, alerted Indian defence authorities who inspected the heavy cargo and reported suspicions, leading to the consignment’s seizure. Officials emphasized that this seizure falls under efforts to prevent potential proliferation by Pakistan and China.

According to documentation such as bills of lading, the consignor was listed as “Shanghai JXE Global Logistics Co Ltd,” and the consignee was “Pakistan Wings Pvt Ltd” of Sialkot. However, further investigation by security agencies indicated that the 22,180-kilogram consignment was actually shipped by Taiyuan Mining Import and Export Co Ltd and intended for Cosmos Engineering in Pakistan.

This is not the first time Indian port officials have intercepted such dual-use military-grade items en route from China to Pakistan. Cosmos Engineering, a Pakistani defence supplier, has been under scrutiny since March 12, 2022, when Indian authorities intercepted a shipment of Italian-made thermoelectric instruments, once again at Nhava Sheva port.

Despite international conventions, the interception underscores the ongoing cooperation between Pakistan and China in activities that defy global agreements, raising concerns about potential proliferation activities. In a separate incident in February 2020, China was found to be supplying autoclaves to Pakistan under the guise of “industrial dryers.”

The autoclave was seized from a Chinese ship, Dai Cui Yun, flying a Hong Kong flag, which departed from Jiangyin port in China’s Jiangsu province, bound for Pakistan’s Port Qasim. This seizure, likely intended for Pakistan’s missile program, reinforced suspicions that Pakistan is engaging in illegal missile trade and violating the Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR).

The collaboration between China and Pakistan in obtaining sensitive items and equipment, combined with China’s support in constructing nuclear power plants for Pakistan, has drawn attention from international bodies, challenging established guidelines and control regimes. Officials noted that China’s assistance to Pakistan comes in two forms: clandestine supply of sensitive materials or equipment of proliferation concern and acting as a conduit to facilitate Pakistan’s procurement of dual-use military-grade items from Europe and the US.

Additionally, China has aided Pakistan in building civil nuclear power plants, including four 300 MWe plants in Chashma and two 1,000 MWe plants in Karachi, in violation of Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) guidelines. China plans to construct another 1,000 MWe nuclear power plant in Chashma.

The recent sanctions imposed by the US Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) on Chinese companies involved in supplying missile-relevant items to Pakistan highlight the seriousness of the situation and the need for increased oversight to curb potential proliferation activities.

Google reverses its decision, agrees to restore Indian apps after IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw’s intervention

On Saturday, March 2, Google reversed its earlier decision and agreed to restore the Indian apps removed from the Play Store over a dispute regarding the service fees. The company took this decision after its officials held a meeting with the IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. Google dominates the Indian market as 94% of phones are based on its Android platform.

Following Google’s decision to remove the apps, IT Minister Vaishnaw had criticised Google for removing certain apps from its Play Store. Vaishnaw had stated that the government will not allow these apps to be delisted and has called for a meeting with Google to resolve the issue.

In a statement to PTI, the minister had said, “India is very clear, our policy is very clear. Our start-ups will get the protection that they need. I have already called Google. I have already called the app developers which have been delisted, we will be meeting them next week. This cannot be permitted. This kind of de-listing cannot be permitted.”

Earlier, on Friday, Google had removed apps belonging to 10 Indian companies, including well established brands like Bharatmatrimony and Naukri. The dispute centers around Google’s imposition of fees, up to 30%, on in-app payments. Indian companies have long protested against what they deem as unfair practices by the US tech giant. Google reasoned that these 10 Indian companies had taken advantage of the in-apps payment system without paying the due service fees.

While removing the apps, the company had said in its statement, “After giving these developers more than three years to prepare, including three weeks after the Supreme Court’s order, we are taking necessary steps to ensure our policies are applied consistently across the ecosystem, as we do for any form of policy violation globally.”

Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) had also called on Google not to de-list any apps from Google Play. IAMAI said, “The affected members of IAMAI are of the view that a substantive hearing of the case is pending before the Supreme Court of India, and Google should not take any coercive action during the pendency of the case.”

In the past, the tech giant had briefly removed the Indian payments app Paytm from its Play Store citing some policy violations but later reversed its decision.

Kerala: Governor Arif Mohammed Khan suspends vice-chancellor of veterinary university over the death of a student, several SFI members accused in the case

The vice-chancellor of the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) in Pookode, Kerala’s Wayanad, Professor (Dr) MR Saseendranath was suspended by Kerala Governor Arif Mohammed Khan on 2nd March. The decision stemmed from allegations of oversight and duty neglect which allegedly led to the torture, public trial, social disgrace and suicide of 20-year-old JS Sidharthan (or Sidharth), a second-year student at the campus hostel on the afternoon of 18th February. Several SFI members are accused of torturing the student for days leading to the suicide.

Apart from the suspension of the vice-chancellor, 31 students of the university also have been suspended on the recommendation of the anti-ragging committee for connections with the case. While 19 of them have been suspended for three years, 12 have been suspended for one year. They can’t enrol in any other college during this period. The committee has recommended the college to expel the students from the hostel also. Most of the members are members of the Students Federation of India (SFI), the student group affiliated with the Communist Party of India (Marxist). A total of 11 accused have been arrested so far, and 4 of them are leaders of the SFI.

The events that led to Sidharthan’s death, according to the suspension order from Raj Bhavan, demonstrate that the vice chancellor failed to handle university affairs with the “desired sincerity, gravity and promptness” stipulated by the university’s regulations and statutes and other pertinent regulations. The order highlighted, “The indifferent, negligent and callous attitude of the VC towards his duties and responsibilities especially against the background of the unfortunate incident is revealed from his report. There was a gross dereliction of duty on the part of the VC during the period that led to the unfortunate incident.”

The governor announced that the Kerala High Court registrar general would be approached regarding the legal proceedings in the matter. The order added, “Being a fit case to invoke Section 9(9) of the Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Act, 2010, an inquiry by a person, who is or who has been a judge of the high court or the supreme court is ordered. The registrar of the high court would be requested in this regard in due course.”

The governor pointed out that the vice chancellor’s disregard for maintaining a peaceful campus environment and his disinterest in the administration of the university have gone “beyond comprehension in terms of rule of law” which is a concerning sign that does not bode well for the institution’s operations or the state’s higher education system. The order noted, “At this juncture, absence of a rarest of rare kind action would impede the course of justice.”

Arif Mohammed Khan pointed out lapses of the university in checking the brutal attack on JS Sidharthan while talking to the reporters in Thiruvananthapuram. He remarked, “This is a pure case of murder. The post-mortem report revealed that his stomach was empty. That means he was not allowed to eat or drink for more than 24 hours. Now, how is it possible that inside a university campus, such a gruesome incident happened and no university authority came to know about it? SFI (Students Federation of India) has converted one hostel in every college as their headquarters and even college staff are afraid to go to there. Teachers were scared to conduct inspections. The party-controlled teacher organisations play second fiddle to the SFI.”

He added, “The torment, insult, physical assault and forced starvation that resulted in Sidharthan’s death were not a one-off incident. The SFI has a stranglehold on campuses and hostels.” He observed that the scope of the impending judicial enquiry would cover those aspects. He also questioned the university administration’s ignorance of the student’s three days of continuous, gruesome torment. He revealed, “The university reported me about the death only yesterday,” while taking a jab at the vice-chancellor.

The Raj Bhavan has asked the High Court to set up a magisterial investigation into the case within the next three or four days. The post-mortem examination report, per the governor, demonstrated the severity of the torture that the deceased was allegedly subjected to by the SFI. He also voiced doubts over the police probe into incidents of suicide abetment. He claimed that although the state has some of the best law enforcement in the nation, it remains under “the CPI(M)’s (Communist Party of India-Marxist) political control.”

He also visited the parents of JS Sidharthan in Thiruvananthapuram’s Nedumangad on 1st March. “I am here to share the grief of the family, especially the mother, who is in a very bad state. The police and the university are saying that the SFI activists are involved in it. Here, young people are being trained for violence, but they are merely pawns,” he highlighted while addressing the media.

He called on political parties to ‘rethink’ their approaches and abandon violence and stressed that campus politics destroys young people’s future. “We have to think about more than just this one case, we have to think about all youngsters. When youngsters have a police case against them, it takes years. They couldn’t apply for any jobs, and they became dependent on political people. Now, the people of the state should think that the cult of violence must end.” He observed, “Youth’s future is getting ruined in it. I appeal to every political party to rethink their strategy, rethink how they want to work, and give up violence.”

JS Sidharthan was discovered hanging in his dorm room on 18th February. His family members accused that he was violently attacked by other SFI student leaders within the institution and emphasised that the case was murder rather than suicide. The matter transpired after the young man danced with senior women students at the college on Valentine’s Day.

Amid rumours of BJP denying tickets to 100 MPs, Gautam Gambhir and Jayant Sinha quit electoral politics

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) CEC (Central Election Committee) Meeting regarding the Lok Sabha elections at the party headquarters in Delhi took place on 29th February and lasted till the early hours of 1st March. The party’s CEC held discussions on the seats of Lok Sabha across about 17 states and set seals on more than 155 seats, the list of which will be released in a day or two. Amid rumours of the BJP denying tickets to over 100 MPs from the current Lok Sabha, BJP MPs have started declaring their exit from electoral politics. Prime names appearing in the news are Gautam Gambhir and Jayant Sinha.

As the CEC of the party concluded its meeting, rumours about whose tickets will be cancelled in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections picked pace in media and social media. It was speculated that BJP MPs like Sunny Deol, Gautam Gambhir etc. may be denied a ticket in the general elections of 2024. However, before any such development could take place and an official list of the candidates be announced, BJP MPs started taking it to their social media handles to declare that they were quitting electoral politics. This is seen as an indication of the party’s message to the elected representatives that they may not get a ticket in the elections this time. It is also being speculated that the MPs thought it would be better if they withdrew before the list declaration to save their face.

Cricketer Gautam Gambhir who is a BJP MP from Delhi wrote from his X handle, “I have requested Hon’ble Party President JP Nadda Ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank Hon’ble PM Narendra Modi Ji and Hon’ble HM Amit Shah Ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!”

BJP MP Jayant Sinha has cited his “efforts in combating global climate change in Bharat and around the world” as the reason for quitting electoral politics. He posted from his X handle, “I have requested Hon’ble Party President Shri JP Nadda Ji to relieve me of my direct electoral duties so that I can focus my efforts on combating global climate change in Bharat and around the world. Of course, I will continue to work with the party on economic and governance issues.”

He further wrote, “I have had the privilege of serving the people of Bharat and Hazaribagh for the past ten years. Moreover, I have been blessed by the many opportunities provided by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, Hon’ble Home Minister Shri Amit Shah Ji, and the BJP leadership. My sincerest gratitude to all of them. Jai Hind!” It remains to be seen what new faces the BJP brings in its first list of candidates.

Delhi LG Saxena gives sanction for CBI inquiry against AAP leader Satyendar Jain for allegedly extorting Rs 10 crores from Sukesh Chandrashekhar

0

Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena has sanctioned a CBI inquiry under the Prevention of Corruption Act against former Delhi Minister and AAP leader Satyendar Jain for allegedly extorting Rs 10 crore from notorious conman Sukesh Chandrashekhar, who was then lodged in Tihar jail, the LG office said in a press release.

Jain, who was the Jail Minister in the AAP government, is accused of running a high-profile extortion racket from Tihar Jail and demanding Rs 10 crore as “protection money” from Chandrashekhar to enable him to “live peacefully and comfortably in jail,” the statement from LG office added.

Jain, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case, was also lodged in Tihar Jail where he had also influenced the jail officials into providing him with body massage and other VIP treatment, the statement said.

Saxena, having given his sanction for the CBI inquiry, also referred the matter to the Ministry of Home Affairs for necessary action in the matter. Notably, on February 9, 2024, the LG also sanctioned a CBI inquiry against Raj Kumar, the then Superintendent of Tihar Jail, for extorting money at the behest of Jain and Sandeep Goel, the former DG of Tihar Jail.

The case pertains to the charges made by Sukesh Chandrashekhar that Jain had extorted and received Rs 10 crore from him in various tranches during 2018-21, either personally or through his accomplices, as protection money, to enable him ‘to live peacefully and comfortably in different jails of Delhi (Tihar, Rohini and Mandoli)’. Jain was Minister (Jail) during this period in the AAP government.

The matter is being investigated by the CBI and the request for prosecution sanction had come through the Directorate of Vigilance GNCTD, to the LG, who is the competent authority in the matter.

Apart from Satyendra Jain and Raj Kumar, Sukesh had also accused Sandeep Goel and one Mukesh Prasad of extorting Rs 12.50 crore in various tranches during 2019-22 from him. Jain, Goel, Prasad and Kumar are accused of misusing their official positions as public servants in extending undue favour to Sukesh Chandrashekhar and other high-profile inmates in Delhi Jails in lieu of valuable considerations.

NIA arrests PFI terrorist Mohammad Ghaus Niazi, accused of killing RSS leader Rudresh, from South Africa

Mohammad Ghaus Niazi, a terrorist of the banned Islamic organization Popular Front of India (PFI), has been arrested in South Africa. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has extradited him to India. Niazi is accused of killing a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) leader in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka. The NIA has also declared a reward of five lakh rupees on him.

Mohammad Ghaus Niazi was a big face of PFI. He was allegedly involved in the murder of 35-year-old RSS leader Rudresh in Bengaluru in 2016. In this case, the investigating agencies have booked him as an accused. After committing the murder, he escaped and left India to form his base in different countries. The case is being probed by the NIA.

The Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) of Gujarat Police first tracked Mohammad Ghaus Niazi in South Africa. After this, they gave this information to the central agency NIA. The NIA then contacted South Africa. The South African agency apprehended Mohammad Ghaus Niazi. He has now been extradited to India and is currently taken to Mumbai.

In 2016, Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh leader Rudresh was murdered in the Shivaji Nagar area of Bengaluru. Rudresh was returning after attending an RSS function in Bengaluru when he was killed. During that time, the terrorists already sitting in an ambush attacked him. He was killed in this attack.

Volunteers took to the streets after the RSS leader was hacked to death with a sharp weapon. After the incident, the then Karnataka BJP president BS Yeddyurappa met Rudresh’s family. He had assured that the matter would be investigated till the end. After 6 years of this murder, the NIA has succeeded in bringing terrorist Mohammad Ghaus Niazi to India.

In 2019, the NIA said that Asim Sharif, another accused in Rudresh’s murder, had conspired to kill Rudresh to prevent people from joining the Hindu organisation. He had planned to kill two more RSS workers. Apart from Asim Sharif, four other PFI leaders including Mohammad Ghaus Niazi were also involved in this murder.

Asim Sharif was the Bengaluru president of the Popular Front of India. Asim Sharif has already been charged for involvement in the murder in this case. Sharif challenged the NIA’s action in the Supreme Court on 2nd January 2018. However, the court had rejected his plea. This paved the way for prosecution on him.

In 2020, Samiuddin was detained by the Bengaluru Police in connection with the violence in a part of Bengaluru over an alleged comment made on a controversial Facebook post. The police official had then said that during the investigation, Samiuddin was found to be in touch with an accused in the RSS worker Rudresh murder case. Samiuddin has also been in touch with members of the Al-Hind terrorist group for the past few years.

TMC used women as “vote bank”, then looked elsewhere when women sought justice in Sandeshkhali: PM Modi

0

Tearing into Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal over allegations of “sexual abuse” and “land grab” in the Sandeskhali area of North 24 Parganas district, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday alleged that the ruling party “did not want the accused to get arrested.”

PM Modi further alleged that the ruling party used the womeloon of Bengal as a “vote bank”.

In his public address at Krishnanagar, PM Modi said that while the women of Sandeshkahli “cried out for justice,” the ruling party in the State “looked elsewhere.”

PM Modi said, “Using the slogan of ‘Maa, Maati, Manush’, the TMC government used the women of Bengal as a vote-bank. Today, Maa, Maati and Maanush are all in the TMC mode of governance. Women of Sandeshkhali kept asking for justice, yet the government did not hear them.”

PM Modi alleged that the TMC had no “intention” to get the prime accused arrested in the Sandeshkhali incident. “But the nari shakti of Bengal stood like a Durga (goddess Durga).

“In Bengal, the police do not decide when a criminal must be arrested; it’s the criminal who decides everything for himself. The state government did not want the accused in the Sandeshkhali incident to be arrested…,” the Prime Minister said.

He said every worker of the BJP stood with the women of Sandeskahli in their struggle for justice. “Then the state government relented,” referring to the arrest of Shahjahan Sheikh.

Sanndeskhlai has been on a boil and witnessed violent protests in recent days over the allegations of “sexual abuse” against Shahjahan Sheikh, who was arrested earlier this week after remaining elusive for over a month.

The BJP state leadership also felicitated Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a program in Krishnanagar.

PM Modi’s visit assumes significance ahead of the Lok Sabha elections expected to be held in April-May.
