Bihar govt reduces school holidays for rest of the year from 23 to 11 by cutting Durga Puja, Diwali, Chhath holidays, BJP calls it attack on Hindu festivals

0

On 29th August, the Bihar Education Department issued a notification announcing that the number of festival holidays between September and December has been reduced from 23 to 11. Additional Chief Secretary KK Pathak issued the notification as part of improving the school education system in Bihar.

As per the notification, the Rakshabandhan holiday has been scrapped, the number of Holidays for Durga Puja has been reduced from six to three and nine holidays for Diwali to Chhatth have been reduced to four.

The 3-day Durga puja holiday includes a Sunday, while the 2-day Chhath holiday also includes one Sunday. The lone Diwali holiday falls on Sunday on 12 November. While there were nine days of holidays from Diwali to Chhath Puja, now there will be only one day off for Diwali and 2 days for Chhath Puja, including a Sunday.

The notification stated that due to elections, examinations, administration, festivities, events, floods, natural calamities and other reasons, the mandatory 200 days of school education for primary and 220 days for secondary schools are not possible.

Furthermore, different festivities are celebrated in different regions of the state, creating confusion. A new list of holidays for the remaining months of the year has been announced to remove the confusion over the holidays.

Reacting to the decision, Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Begusarai Shandilya Giriraj Singh said, “Education Department, Bihar Government has cancelled holidays on Durga Puja, Diwali and Chhath Puja. Tomorrow, they may impose Sharia and ban Hindu festivals altogether.”

Teachers association of Bihar ‘Educators of Bihar’ said in a statement, “Even after deducting 52 Sundays and 60 holidays on festivals, the schools run for 253 days. The decision taken by the education department is dictatorial. The department should take cognisance of the matter and reverse the notification; otherwise, all teachers will protest against it and shake the foundation of the state government.”

OpIndia tried to reach out to MP Giriraj Singh for comments but could not connect.

‘India’s Kashmir is mind blowing’: Miss World Karolina Biwlawska after visiting Srinagar, beauty queens enjoy a tour in the valley ahead of December pageant

Ever since the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, the crown of India has witnessed many unprecedented events and is gaining global attention, for many good reasons. Months after India hosted a G20 tourism meeting in Srinagar for the first time ever, the city is hosting beauty the international beauty pageant winners including Miss World Karolina Bielawska.

As India is hosting the Miss World 2023 event in December, a pre-event was held in Srinagar on Monday, August 28, the event was attended by Miss World, Miss World Caribbean, Emmy Pena; Miss World America, Shree Saini; Miss World India, Sini Shetty; Miss World England, Jessica Gagen; Miss Asia, Pricilia Carla Saputri Yules. The Chairman and CEO of Miss World Organization, Julia Eric Morley was also present.

All the beauty pageant winners were given a tour of Srinagar, including the world-famous Dal Lake. The Department of Tourism took them for Shikara rides. The visiting beauty queens were in complete awe of the beauty of Kashmir and the warm welcome they received in India.

Speaking about her India visit, Miss World Karolina Biwlawska on Monday expressed her absolute joy as she praised the beauty of the beautiful places in India including Kashmir. The Miss World also lauded India’s diversity and heartwarming hospitality.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to see this beautiful place (Kashmir) in India. I didn’t expect it at all, but it just stuns me with its beauty. We’ve been talking about Kashmir and I knew there would be beautiful scenery. But what we’ve seen today was really blowing our minds… And everyone welcomed us so nicely, so warmly that I cannot wait to welcome 140 nations and all my friends and family to bring them here to India and to show places like Kashmir, like Delhi, and Mumbai. India has so many beautiful places, India is very diverse and every time I come here there is something new that I experience. Every state has so much to offer and is extremely hospitable,” Karolina said at a press conference in Srinagar on Monday.

When asked about India’s Chandrayaan-3 success, Bielawska said “It is an incredible achievement and India should be very proud.”

It is pertinent to recall tha in June this year, the Miss World Organisation had chosen India as the host country for the 71st Miss World 2023 pageant. India has won the Miss World pageant six times with Reita Faria winning the title in 1966, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in 1994, Diana Hayden in 1997, Yukta Mookhey in 1999, Priyanka Chopra in 2000 and Manushi Chillar in 2017. It is three decades after that India will be hosting the prestigious event in December this year.

Although several media reports claimed that Kashmir will be hosting the 71st edition of the Miss World pageant, Jamil Saidi, chairman of PME Entertainment refuted the reports calling them “unfounded” and “incorrect”.

“On behalf of the Miss World Organisation, we would like to strongly state that news of the main Miss World 2023 Finale is being held in Kashmir is unfounded and incorrect. As officially announced by PME Entertainment and Miss World organisation, the venue for the finale is to be finalised and will be announced officially at a later date,” Saidi said.

Earlier media reports claimed that Kashmir would host the 71st Miss World pageant.

“I am truly overjoyed. “Seeing such beauty is emotional for us,” Morely, who is visiting Kashmir, told the reporters on Monday.

Morley further stated that the Miss World crew would most likely come to Kashmir in November. “We look forward to seeing you in November. Thank you, Kashmir. You are wonderful people. God bless you and we are looking forward to coming back,” Morley said.

Ever since the Narendra Modi government’s momentous decision on August 5, 2019, to abrogate Article 370, Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed phenomenal progress in crucial sectors. The tourism industry of Jammu and Kashmir has witnessed a remarkable surge since the removal of Article 370 as last year, over 18 million tourists arrived in Jammu and Kashmir. Moreover, the agrarian economy has also seen an 8 percent progress last year. Since August 5, 2019, reports suggest that investment projects to the tune of nearly Rs 25 thousand crore are under progress in Jammu and Kashmir.

With the removal of Article 370 and the implementation of the new Industrial Development Scheme, Jammu and Kashmir has received investment proposals worth more than Rs 80,000 crore.

Although there is a long way to go, J&K’s exceptional progress and its assimilation into the mainstream will certainly rattle Pakistan and its sympathisers here in India, who see Kashmir not as a beautiful place but as an issue to corner India and as a battleground to carry out anti-India activities.

‘10 lakhs to cut his tongue’: UP Congress leader issues bounty against Samajwadi Party leader Swami Prasad Maurya over anti-Hindu remarks

In another political low, a Congress leader on Tuesday (29 August) issued a threat of physical harm against controversial Samajwadi Party General Secretary Swami Prasad Maurya for constantly making vitriolic remarks against Hinduism.

Pandit Ganga Ram Sharma, a district Congress leader from Uttar Pradesh’s Moradabad unit has reportedly announced a cash reward of Rs 10 lakh as a bounty against SP’s motormouth leader Swami Prasad Maurya. As per media reports, the Congress leader has claimed to give money to anyone who will ‘cut off the tongue’ of the senior SP functionary as he has been repeatedly passing incendiary and slandering remarks against Hinduism.

As per a report in India Today, Pandit Ganga Ram Sharma is the district chairman of Congress’s Human Rights Department in Moradabad. The report adds that Congress leader Sharma has accused Maurya of insulting Hinduism and slandering the religious book Ramcharitmanas. Hurt by Maurya’s act, he reportedly issued a press note on Tuesday saying that Swami Prasad Maurya is not only insulting Tulsidas’ Ram Charit Manas but also the Hindu religion.

His letter calling out violence against the SP leader and announcing a reward for the same has gone viral on social media.

However, the Congress party has distanced itself from their Sharma’s controversial statement. Responding to the development, Congress District President Aslam Khurshid said that the statement of the Congress leader Sharma is his personal remark and the party has nothing to do with it.

Meanwhile, another local leader announced that he would give a reward for thrashing SP leader Swami Prasad Maurya. While speaking to the media, State General Secretary of Shiv Sena and Kranti Sena Manoj Saini stated that they will give 1100 rupees to the one who will hit Swami Prasad Maurya with shoes.

Meanwhile, Swami Prasad Maurya has been repeatedly courting controversy for launching an abominable tirade against Hinduism. After spearheading a hateful campaign against Ramcharitmanas, on 27 August, SP leader Maurya made a vitriolic statement against Hinduism stating that Hinduism is not a religion but a hoax. He also equated the Hindu religion with an oppressive trap.

When the controversy escalated, the Samajwadi Party tried distancing itself from the slandering remarks of their General Secretary Maurya. Apparently, on Monday (28 August), SP leader Manoj Kumar Pandey claimed that Maurya’s statements do not reflect the stance of the party. Going further, he lambasted his senior party functionary Maurya for using religion to “revive his political career.”

‘Titanic wreckage contains remains of 1500 people’: US govt cites law and a treaty to oppose another expedition by private company down the Atlantic

Following the Titan disaster where 5 persons died onboard the deep-sea submersible vehicle on a tour of the Titanic wreckage site in the Atlantic, the American government is planning to restrict such dives. As per reports, the US government will stop an expedition planned next year to retrieve Titanic debris artefacts. The govt is citing a federal statute and a treaty that designated the shipwreck as a sacred burial ground, therefore banning removing materials from the seabed.

The unmanned trip has been planned by RMS Titanic Inc., a Georgia-based company that holds the salvage rights to the Titanic debris. They intend to capture pictures of the complete ship and explore the inside of the hull.

The company displays items like cutlery and a fragment of the Titanic that have been found at the wreck site at the bottom of the North Atlantic. Less than three months have passed since five people were killed when a manned submersible from a separate business imploded as it descended to inspect the wreckage, which prompted the authorities to question the latest venture.

The US District Court in Norfolk, Virginia, which is in charge of Titanic salvage cases, is where the legal conflict is underway. The government has maintained that going into the severed hull, as RMST intends to do, would violate federal law and an agreement with Great Britain to regard the sunken vessel as an obituary to over 1,500 people who perished after the ship collided with an iceberg and plunged while crossing the Atlantic in 1912.

However, the company questions the US govt’s right over the issue, as the shipwreck is in international waters, and not within the maritime jurisdiction of the USA.

The disruption of any artefacts or human remains that could still be present on the ship is the government’s principal worry. The attorneys contended that RMST was not free to ignore this legally established federal statute despite its stated intent in court documents on 25 August. They remarked that the shipwreck “will be deprived of the protections Congress granted it.”

The voyage which is scheduled in May 2024, entailed taking pictures of the entire ship, including within. RMST stated that the operation would search for relics in the debris field and “may recover free-standing objects inside the wreck,” in court documents.

These might include “objects from the Marconi room, but only if such objects are not affixed to the wreck itself.” The ship’s Marconi wireless telegraph radio, which was the first to transmit Morse code messages that pertained to the ship’s collision with the iceberg resides in the Marconi chamber. Nearby ships responded to the message and assisted in saving the lives of around 700 people who escaped in lifeboats.

RMST conveyed, “At this time, the company does not intend to cut into the wreck or detach any part of the wreck.” The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which represents the general public’s interest in the wreck, and RMST have agreed to “work collaboratively” on this project. However, it won’t pursue a permit.

The firm cannot move further without a permit, according to US government lawyers, who asserted that RMST needed approval from the secretary of commerce, who is in charge of NOAA. RMST has in the past contested the legality of American attempts to “infringe” on its salvage rights to a shipwreck that is situated in international waters.

The company insisted that the only court with jurisdiction is the one in Norfolk and has supported the claim with centuries of maritime law precedent. When RMST planned a mission to recover a radio onboard, it was involved in a similar legal dispute with the government in 2020.

An unmanned submersible is scheduled to squeeze through a window or grab onto the roof. Afterwards, a “suction dredge” would clear away loose silt while manipulator arms could sever wires. In accordance with the company, it would display the radio and tales of the soldiers who sent out distress calls “until seawater was literally lapping at their feet.”

The District Judge authorised RMST for the mission in May 2020 and noted that the radio is significant historically and culturally, and risked being lost for good owing to deterioration. Several weeks later, the US government officially challenged the 2020 expedition in court, although, it never materialised. Due to the coronavirus epidemic, the company postponed its plans until early 2021.

Titanic Wreckage Protected Under U.S.-U.K. Deal

The U.S. and the U.K. implemented a formal agreement on how to conserve and manage the wreckage of the tragic steamer more than a century after the RMS Titanic crashed to the bottom of the sea after hitting an iceberg and almost 25 years after its memory was revived for a Hollywood blockbuster.

When visiting Belfast, Northern Ireland in 2020, the ship’s construction site before it sailed from Southampton, England, in 1912, British Maritime Minister Nusrat Ghani provided confirmation of the news. He had proclaimed, “This momentous agreement with the United States to preserve the wreck means it will be treated with the sensitivity and respect owed to the final resting place of more than 1,500 lives.”

The US State Department announced, “The Agreement reinforces the United States’ collaborative efforts with the United Kingdom and others to preserve the wreck site as an international maritime memorial to the men, women, and children who perished aboard the ship. The RMS Titanic is of major national and international historical, cultural, and scientific significance and merits appropriate protection.”

UNESCO laws primarily served to protect the wreck’s location earlier, which was found in 1985. The United Nations Cultural Organisation established a set of guidelines in 2001 for destinations considered to be a part of the world’s submerged cultural heritage, such as the Titanic wreck. The agreement stipulates, among other things, the preservation of these remains in their original location and the prohibition of commercial exploitation.

The agreement that was approved by the countries extended those regulations and laid forth precise instructions on how to issue and get licences to explore the ship’s remnants as well as how to punish anyone who breached them.

Titanic Sub Destroyed in Catastrophic Implosion

The remains of a deep-sea submersible Titan that was bringing five passengers to the Titanic’s century-old tragedy were discovered after a “catastrophic implosion” that killed everyone on board and ended a multinational five-day search for the steamship.

The Titan tourist submarine capsized owing to excessive pressure in the North Atlantic Ocean, killing the CEO of OceanGate and 4 prominent passengers in addition to the pilot, 111 years after the Titanic catastrophe.

The US Coast Guard has reported that one of its ROVs from the ship Horizon Arctic discovered tail comb pieces from the OceanGate sub-Titan on the ocean below around 1600 feet from the Titanic’s bow wreckage. The general area also contained other debris that was dispersed. It was determined that the material came from Titan.

Guillermo Stohnlein, a co-founder of OceanGate, informed that if there had been any failure, the implosion would have happened right away. The Titanic’s detritus is situated at a depth of about 3800 metres. The vessel and everything inside it are immediately crushed by the implosion at that level. The pilot and the passengers would have passed away in a matter of milliseconds.

The pilot was the CEO of OceanGate, and among the four individuals were the well-known ‘Mr Titanic’ Paul-Henry Nargeolet, a British-Pakistani father-and-son team named Shahzada Dawood and Suleiman Dawood, and the billionaire adventurer, Hamish Harding.

A veteran of the French Navy, Mr Titanic took part in the initial mission that went to the wreck in 1987, only two years later it came to light. He earned the nickname because he is reputed to have spent the most time at the wreck of the Titanic as compared to any other explorer.

UP: BSP expels ‘Boti Boti’ Imran Masood for praising Rahul Gandhi, Masood accuses party of demanding Rs 5 crores

On 29th August, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) expelled its leader Imran Masood for indulging in anti-party activities. The action has been taken against him after he praised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Masood, who joined BSP in October 2022 after quitting the Samajwadi Party (SP), made headlines in 2014 for threatening to ‘cut Prime Minister Narendra Modi into small pieces’. He was a Congress leader at that time.

In a release issued by the Saharanpur unit of the BSP, the party said they received several reports of Masood being indulged in misconduct and anti-party activities. After investigating the reports, he was shown the way out of the party. BSP stated Masood was warned multiple times about his actions, but there was no visible change in his behavior resulting in the action taken by the party.

When Masood joined BSP, he was warned that his conduct would decide if he could get a ticket for Lok Sabha. Meanwhile, during local body elections in Uttar Pradesh, Masood allegedly pressured BSP to give tickets to his family members.

His family members were given tickets on the condition that if they won the election, only then would Masood get a ticket for the Lok Sabha elections in 2024. However, if the family member lost the election, he would not get the ticket. His sister, Khadija Masood, was given the mayoral ticket but lost the election. Masood allegedly promised BSP that he would bring new members into the fold but failed in that as well.

A release issued by the Saharanpur unit of the party on Tuesday said that he had been warned against indulging in anti-party activities several times in the past, but he did not change his behavior. As a result, he was expelled from the party.

Speaking to the media, Masood claimed after his entry into the BSP, the vote share increased wherever he campaigned. He further claimed he was not aware of the reason behind his expulsion from the party.

He further claimed he was asked to pay Rs 5 crore for party funds but failed to arrange them.

In a recent interview with UP Tak, he had called BSP “Looteron Ki Party” and claimed the tickets are given in exchange for money.

Masood said if BSP did not join the alliance (with INDIA), it would miserably lose (the Lok Sabha) elections. Following his expulsion from the party, his brother Noman Masood was expelled for similar reasons.

Masood threatened to chop PM Narendra Modi into pieces

Imran Masood was contesting the Lok Sabha election from Saharanpur in UP in 2014, and during an election rally, he had said, “Narendra Modi se kaun ladega? Jo thok ke jawab dena jaane Modi *&*#@ ko.” (Who will fight against Modi? The one who knows how to give it back to this &@*&# Modi).

He had then added, “Who Gujarat samaj raha hai, 4% Musalman hai Gujrat mei, yaha 42% Musalman hai. Yaha Gujarat bana denge, @#$@# ko boti boti kaat denge… choti choti…” (he thinks this is Gujarat, Gujarat has 4% Muslims, here Muslims are 42%, we will make Gujarat here, will chop @#$@# in small pieces).

Prosecutors in the Netherlands demand a 12-year term for Pakistani cricketer Khalid Latif who offered a bounty to murder Geert Wilders: Details

On Tuesday, Dutch prosecutors called for a 12-year prison sentence for a former cricketer from Pakistan who is accused of paying about €21,000 to have Geert Wilders, Netherlands’ politician and a vocal critic of Islamism, assassinated.

Prosecutors contended Khalid Latif offered the money to anyone who would assassinate Geert Wilders after the fiery Party for Freedom leader created a cartoon contest in 2018 that invited participants to submit caricatures of Prophet Muhammad.

Muslims were outraged and the politician has got several death threats over it. Latif stated in a video posted on social media that he would pay 3 million Pakistani rupees to anyone who would kill “the person who planned this game,” and that “If I had more, I would give it.” The competition was ultimately cancelled by Wilders.

Latif’s identity was withheld by the prosecution, but they claimed in a statement that a video published online in 2018 showed a well-known Pakistan cricketer promising to pay for the murder of Wilders. Due to repeated threats to his life provoked by his vehement criticism of Islam, the politician has lived under 24-hour protection for years.

“The video message was extra toxic because it was issued during a period in which there was a lot of hatred and anger towards Geert Wilders,” the Public Prosecution Service in The Hague said in its written statement.

Wilders also said that he was not living a normal life due to the constant threats to his life that he gets provoked by his vehement criticism of Islam. “I can’t do the most basic things that every human being does every day without thinking about it. Quickly get some air. Empty the mailbox. Driving. Walk around the block. Quickly run a message in the store. Spontaneously go somewhere. Go somewhere alone. It’s not in it for me,” Wilders noted adding that he was grateful for the protection he was being provided though.

The prosecution office stated that killing Wilders would have “caused his loved ones unbearable pain.” Additionally, it would have been a direct assault on the rule of law.

During the trial, Wilders also asserted that a conviction would send a “powerful signal to all others who issue threats: we won’t accept it.” In the further comments directed to absent Latif, Wilders added,  “As long as I’m living and breathing, you won’t stop me. Your call to kill me and pay money for it is abject and will not silence me.”

In the court, the leader also revealed the reason for organizing the said cartoon contest which did not happen. “I organized that cartoon contest by the way, because I gave a speech a few years earlier, in 2015, and was able to present the prize to the winner of another cartoon contest in the city of Garland, Texas in the United States. A terrorist attack took place during that meeting, the first attack claimed by the terrorist group ISIS in the US. Both terrorists were shot dead on the spot by the American police, but rarely did the violence come so close to me. That was the reason I wanted to make it clear that making drawings is allowed by anyone and we should never, ever bow down to people who choose violence, threats, murder, and terror,” he said.

Wilders added that he continues to receive death threats and has been on the death lists of the Taliban, Al Qaeda, and ISIS for a very long time. Notably, an international warrant has been issued for Latif’s arrest.

The prosecutor also stated that they have been attempting to contact Latif since 2018 and have asked Islamabad for legal support but have not received a response.

It was reported on April 18 that the Dutch prosecutors had asked Pakistan to serve the summons on the suspect, but they warned that this would be “very complicated” due to the lack of a legal treaty between the two nations.

Meanwhile, Latif had claimed that he was not aware of the allegations. “I have no knowledge of this. I will only comment once I get any communication on this,” he was quoted as saying.

It may be recalled that Khalid Latif was banned from cricket for five years in 2017 for spot-fixing in a Pakistan Super League match in Dubai. The Pakistan Cricket Board had charged Khalid Latif with six major breaches under the PCB’s anti-corruption code and banned him from all forms of cricket. Khalid Latif was also fined a million Pakistani Rupees. Later, in 2022, Khalid Latif happened to accept his role in spot-fixing and apologised to PCB in writing.

The court is expected to rule in two weeks.

Islamist on Instagram threatens man and woman dressed in Islamic clothes for chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’

On 29th August, a video on social media showed a man from Bengaluru threatening individuals wearing a burqa and a taqiyah (a Muslim skull cap) while chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram.’ The Right Wing Guy, a user on X (formerly Twitter), shared the video on the platform and tagged the Bengaluru police to take action.

The Instagram user that goes by the handle “nayaz_and_boy72” threatened the duo to remove the Islamic clothing before chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’. While threatening the duo, he called them “pigs” and “piglets”. He challenged them to voice their beliefs in the form of a “true Muslim” and threatened to attack them if they failed to comply.

The content of the video has sparked concern about the ability to express one’s religious beliefs and cultural practices freely. Acknowledging the video, Bengaluru Police said they would verify it.

Instagram is being used to threaten people

This is not the first time that Islamists have used the platform to intimidate others. OpIndia has covered several instances where Islamists threatened Hindus. In some of the videos, Muslim children could be seen in threatening videos.

On 26th June, Right Wing Guy shared a reel of an Instagram influencer named Amaan Tanwar, wherein the latter is seen inciting Muslims to commit violence against non-Muslims. Going by the handle- amaantanwarofficial0001- the Instagram influencer is heard threatening non-Muslims with violence. He urges his Muslim brethren to stay united and smash the skulls of those who are against Islam.

In April 2022, an Instagram Live went viral on social media in which an Influencer Sabnam and her friend Nadeem, spewed venom against Hindus. Nadeem said, “I have seen three Hindus being killed in front of my eyes. They die daily in our area. They should be killed openly. A few days ago, a cow was being killed. A Hindu approached and raised an objection. I told him to call the Police and administration. They would not do anything.” While he was abusing Hindus and openly called to kill them, Sabnam kept giggling.

In May 2020, many netizens shared videos from a TikTok (banned Chinese short video app) trend where Muslim boys act on lyrics of a song praising Haider, a Muslim warrior, for killing thousands of Hindus, referred to as ‘Kafir’. The lyrics say, “Ilaka Hil Raha Tha Vehdat Ke Naaron Se, Zara Si Der Mein Maidan Bhara Tha Kafir Ki Lashon Se, Jab Chali Haider Ki Talwar”.

Another aspect of the misuse of Instagram can be seen in the so-called propaganda spread by the Islamists named “Bhagwa Love Trap”. OpIndia’s detailed reports on it can be seen here.

Australia set for landmark indigenous rights referendum on October 14, marks defining moment for the modern country’s relationship with original inhabitants

On Wednesday, 30th August 2023, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the historic indigenous rights referendum will take place on October 14. This momentous event is poised to mark a defining juncture in Australia’s relationship with its Aboriginal minorities.

Declaring the date scheduled for the compulsory voting, Anthony Albanese said, “On that day, every Australian will have a once-in-a-generation chance to bring our country together, and you change it for the better. I ask all Australians to vote yes.”

The prime question asked in this referendum is – “A Proposed Law: to alter the Constitution to recognize the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. Do you approve this proposed alteration?”

Should the referendum garner approval, it will signify a historic milestone, as Indigenous Australians, whose lineage on the continent spans over 60,000 years, will be acknowledged within the nation’s constitution for the first time. Moreover, the Aboriginal community would secure a constitutionally anchored entitlement popularly known as their “Voice to Parliament” granting them the right to participate in the consultation of laws affecting their communities.

Constitutional reform in Australia necessitates a national referendum, a process known for its complexity. To succeed, a referendum must secure over 50% of the nationwide vote and garner majority support in at least four out of six Australian states. Historically, Australia has seen 44 proposals for constitutional change and 19 referendums, with only eight achieving passage.

A potential failure of this particular referendum is apprehended to have far-reaching consequences. It could harm interracial relations, stain Australia’s global image, and miss a unique chance to address long-standing inequality issues.

Australia lacks a treaty with its indigenous population, which constitutes approximately 3.2% of the country’s nearly 26 million inhabitants. Across various socio-economic indicators, the Aboriginal community trails below national norms. Despite their pre-colonial presence on the continent predating European migration, the constitution omits any reference to Aboriginal people. The Australian government is actively backing the success of the referendum.

According to a report by Reuters, opinion polls showed a decrease in support for the referendum in recent months. Advocates of the proposal contend that a ‘yes’ vote will contribute to reconciling with the Aboriginal population and fostering national cohesion. Conversely, opponents argue that such an outcome could exacerbate racial divisions within Australia and grant disproportionate authority to the Indigenous community.

Muslims upset with Karnataka Congress govt for continuing the Rs 1 lakh per annum grant to maintain Urdu Academy: Read details

Months after winning the state assembly election in Karnataka, the Congress party has apparently disappointed several Muslims over the allocation of nominal funds for the sustenance of the state’s Urdu Academy and Minorities Commission. Speaking to The New Indian Express, former advisor to former PM VP Singh, Syed Ashraf expressed his disappointment over the post of Urdu Academy’s chairperson being vacant for the last two years.

Pointing out that the Rs 1 lakh per annum grant allocated for the maintenance of the Academy is insufficient, Asraf said that the per day spent if 1 lakh is divided by 365 is merely around Rs 274. He added that with such meagre funds, it is impossible for the Urdu Academy to get their books or literature published.

Ashraf expressed his disappointment over the Congress government continuing with the Rs 1 lakh grant for the Urdu Academy announced by the previous BJP government instead of raising the amount.

“A sum of Rs 1 lakh was announced by Basavaraj Bommai, but after coming to power, the Congress has continued with it. Urdu is associated only with Muslims, whereas the same language was spoken and written by former PM IK Gujral and former Karnataka CM Dharam Singh. Did not expect the Karnataka government to allocate such meagre funds,” Ashraf said.

Moreover, Syed Ashraf also reportedly slammed the state’s Waqf and Minority Welfare Minister BZ Zameer Ahmed Khan over his “failure” to speak up for the Muslim community and get additional funds allocated to the Urdu Academy.

Asraf further stated that Congress leader Zameer Khan had an Urdu certificate, but if he had been a scholar, he would have understood things better.

Moreover, Ashraf said that a representation will be given to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in the next day or two, and a copy will be shared with the AICC head office in New Delhi. According to Alam Pasha, an activist and researcher, community leaders manipulate sentiments to gain votes but fail to stand with the community when necessary.

‘No permit needed for Azaan on Jummah and Ramzan in New York City’: NYC Mayor Eric Adams

On August 29, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that no permission would be required to give Azaan or the call for Islamic prayer from mosques on Jummah and during Ramzan. The new initiative by the New York Police Department (NYPD) aims to “support and facilitate the Islamic call to public prayer at regularly prescribed times each Friday and during the holy month of Ramadan,” an official press release read.

Earlier, a special permit was required to publicly broadcast the Azaan, on Fridays (Jummah) or during Ramzan, however, under the new rules, Mosques will not be required to obtain the permit for the same.

Mayor Adams while making the announcement said that there was a feeling among the Muslims that they were not allowed to amplify their calls for prayer and thus the city administration decided to cut the “red tape” and allow the mosques and houses of worship to freely amplify their call to prayer on Fridays and during Ramadan without a permit necessary.

“We want our brothers and sisters of Muslim faith to know that they are free to live their faith in New York City because, under the law, we will all be treated equally. Our administration is proud to finally get this done,” Mayor Adams remarked.

Meanwhile, New York City Police Commissioner Edward Caban described the move to allow Azaan calls without permission as part of the NYPD’s community engagement and ongoing crime-fighting initiatives.

“This important work, being led by our NYPD Community Affairs Bureau, is a fundamental service to the ideas of religious freedom, understanding, and sustained peace and prosperity for all,” said NYPD Commissioner Caban.

“Our hardworking police officers know that our diversity — our rich blend of varying backgrounds and experiences — is what often makes us stronger. The NYPD’s proud embrace of this idea is at the heart of our robust community outreach, our crime-fighting efforts, and our ongoing public safety mission,” Caban added.

Interestingly, it is hard to comprehend how allowing Azaan calls on Fridays and during Ramzan will help the city police in their “crime fighting” efforts and facilitate their public safety mission.

The Community Affairs division of the New York police department will work with mosques to disseminate the updated guidelines and ensure that devices used to broadcast the adhan are adjusted to suitable decibel levels. According to the mayor’s office, houses of worship can transmit up to 10 decibels above the ambient sound level.

With regard to the timings for the call to prayer, the press release stated, “A mosque or masjid can broadcast the call to prayer every Friday between 12:30 PM and 1:30 PM as well as during the sunset prayers every evening during Ramadan.”
