Reclaiming our Bhartiya academic spaces: Why only placing ‘our people’ in key academic positions might not help solve the malady of Left bias

The concept of a university, as we know it today, has to be decolonized. Not just by changing the curriculum one fine day or bringing in a new dress code. And definitely not by bringing in alternate power structures which mirror that which is existent, albeit from a variant ideological perspective. The very notion of a modern University is a western construct. While the associated historiography can have various national and cultural appropriations vis-à-vis the ‘first University in the world’, universities, as a social organization, were peculiar to medieval Europe.

While some may protest this characterization, I would like to encourage my Dharmic dissidents to refrain. The very term ‘University’ comes from the Latin ‘Universitas’, which means “the whole, total, the universe, the world”. This, in itself, exudes a certain hubris that belies the fruits of any informed introspection. The university of medieval Europe had a rather guild-like nature to it, giving rise to what can be regarded as an academic market. Licentia ubique docendi (license to teach everywhere), issued by the Church to the universities at the end of the thirteenth century, codified the consolidation of this market by granting the right to teach at any institution in Europe after receiving a doctorate. The sorting, agglomeration and selection of scholars led to high University outputs, even as these three phenomena point to market forces at play. There seems to have been competition, both among scholars and institutions, to have the best institutions and scholars respectively. This is spoken on by Denley:

“an efficient and sometimes cut-throat academic market, with its own ‘transfer season,’ clearly defined hierarchies, rocketing salaries for the top players, and a mentality of academic celebrity that fed of it.”

Political fragmentation, competition between state and church as well as a common language (Latin) are often regarded as key to the academic market developing in a decentralized manner. The decoupling of the state and the clergy as well as the preeminence of Sanskrit was a reality in India since ancient times. Political fragmentation also took place after the fall of the Vardhan dynasty. Then a natural question is: did India have an academic market like the medieval Europeans did? The short answer is – of course! In Ancient India, Pushpagiri Vihara, Odantapuri, Takshashila, Nalanda, Sharada Peeth, Jagaddala Mahavihara, Somapura Mahavihara and Vikamashila are some of the giants among learning institutions. Bronkhorts and Scharfe regard Takshashila to be at least from the fifth century BCE.

The library at Nalanda was so massive and had so many texts and books (about 9 million) that it is said that upon its destruction and arson by Ghuride general Bakhtiyar Khilji, the library kept burning for 3 months. Nyaya Shastra, Tarka Shastra, Mimansa and Shankhya Shastra emerged from Mithila, which also was associated with Ashtavakra and Yajnavalkya. Sharada Peeth was so renowned that Sri Ramanujacharya travelled from Srirangam to this temple university to refer to the Brahma Sutras, before beginning his work on writing his commentary on the Brahmasutras – the Sri Bhasya. Over time, primarily due to the advent of invaders and marauders, these Indic centres of learning faded away. In 1234 AD, Dharmaswamin found Nalanda to be in a terrible state. He mentions in his biography – Chag lo tsa-ba Chos-rje-dpal, written in Tibetan, that of the eight temples as well as fourteen large and eighty-four smaller monasteries, only two viharas were in serviceable condition!

A question many ask is that if we could have short cylinders of composite glass in the Satavahana period if Indians could work Wootz or Damascus steel and compose treatises like Rasaratna Samuchaya telling us about types of zinc ore, why did we fall on the short end of the technological power gradient with respect to invaders in the 12th century CE? It was partially due to an ossification, a societal rigidification of the concept of Varna on strictly birth-based lines and partially due to a lack of nuance when considering military and political strategy. Both of these took place due to a more fundamental ossification: an ossification of intellectual and spiritual-social capital. An ossification that happened in the collective consciousness of the Indian people.

This is most glaringly true when it comes to science and technology back in those days. It is at the onset of such ossification that constructs can be conveniently misused for the self-interests of those who hold the reins of power, hierarchies are instituted and exploited for egomaniacal pursuits. When a boffin does not collaborate with artisans or craftsmen closely, when innovations aren’t chrestomathic – related to that which is useful and utilitarian, when knowledge-seeking is not calibrated with the larger movement of human percipience and wisdom, when instead of ability one’s birth becomes primary to decide the human resource dividend of a person, particularly for tactics and deployment as strategists and soldiers, when one forgets one’s strengths and only apes what the other side has to offer (only trying to push the frontier thereof) and when one has a general lack of unity due to political (and more importantly, psychological) silos, what can one expect but vulnerability and a promise of destruction, which many Indian kingdoms faced over the centuries, such as in the Battles of Tarain (1192), Chandawar (1194) and Mt. Abu (1197)?

The lack of intellectual manoeuvring is so glaring that in terms of strategies, similar tactics were used in the Battle of Khanua (1527) and Halidighati (1576)! Even in philosophy, after the heydays of Sri Ramanujacharya, there were very few innovations or novel strands of thought. Yes, ways of communication and reach of the ideas and insights increased, particularly in the Bhakti movement, and maybe one could say that Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa’s formulation of Vijñāna Vedanta was a noteworthy development. However, there was a certain overall stagnation of thought.

At the practical level, while there was progress in areas like mathematics and astronomy (with luminaries like Śrīdharācāryya, Sripati, Śatānanda and Bhāskarāchārya II), medicine (with practices like checking a patient’s pulse being introduced for the first time in Cikitsūtilaka by Tisatācaryā, irrigation technology (with the construction of large tanks like the Porumamilla tank by Emperor Bukka Raya I’s son Prince Bhaskara Bhavadura of the 1st Vijayanagara dynasty) and glass technology (as seen from artefacts found in Satvahana sites), the application of science and technology to various socio-economic and geopolitical problems was restricted. This may have been due to societal stratification, due to political fragmentation, due lack of vision and ambition amongst intellectuals, and most importantly unable to look beyond rigid conceptions of how life, society and the world around should function as. Mind you this was not a Hindu model that relied on fatalism and contentedness – a characterization so wrongly done by Raj Krishna to regard failed dirigist economic policies to be the cause of a slow ‘Hindu rate of growth’. No, that would be both historically and civilizational unfair and untrue. In the times of yore, there have been various achievements that are seldom spoken of or even known.

The tryst with calculus and town planning, the forays into medicine and statecraft (such as by Chanakya), the complete rout of the Umayyid campaigns in the eighth century, and so much more. These do not point to a lack of initiative or agency. These do not highlight any fatalistic whims or hubris. We fell to a denigration of our own civilizational imagination. We succumbed to the miniaturization of the scope and scale of our own indigenous meta-theories. It was not just about the empirical failures but also a failure of thought, a failure of imagination. We lost our ability to have an informed, adaptive and rounded approach to matters of life, society and the world around us.

This is what we must reclaim. Not just liberation from the encumbrance of identities but from that of the absolutist pre-eminence of any system of ideas. Both identities and ideologies have a conditioned, relative reality, and should not be the premise for overarching positioning, prejudices or parsimony, when it comes to the interests and freedom of specific cross-sections of University communities, in particular, and societies, in general. We need to move towards a truly Dharmic model of our academic spaces that are, both ontological and epistemologically, unfettered and yet building towards a national and humanitarian coherence.

Modern Maladies: Left-Liberal Bias and Exclusivist Tendencies

Fast track forward, from medieval times. We face a similar and yet completely different instantiation of the principles of dogma and intellectual ossification. Modern Indian universities, much like various Western universities, are infused with biases. Most prominent among these is the infamous left-liberal bias. Today, an NLU social science curriculum may have Marx and Foucault but no Friedman or Sowell, communist literature on the issues with Indian neoliberalism but no discussion on how India may have suffered under the socialist bandwagon. Today, the ‘student activists’ of JNU would protest Baba Ramdev’s visit but laud Afzal Guru, who was a Kashmiri separatist convicted for his role in the 2001 Indian Parliament attack!

This is not a new phenomenon. Between 16 November 1980 and 3 January 1981, then-PM Indira Gandhi had to shut down the Jawaharlal Nehru University due to left-instigated violence on campus. The Left in India has been unrelenting in various ways when it comes to academia. There are stories of a general purge of non-Left academics up to the 1990s, to the point that there were hardly any non-Left voices left in some disciplines. Even in politics, this tendency of purging opponents is ubiquitous. Mainstream Weekly (2010) highlighted that the communist government of West Bengal committed more than 50,000 political killings in its three decades of rule. It is not as much the freedom to choose a political ideology that is problematic as much imposing the effect of that choice on the system and on the youth of the country.

Such intellectuals are hypocritical and display selective outrage – the CAA will receive backlash but the Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists being persecuted in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will hardly be met with anything other than a cursory lamentation, at best. Leaving aside any ideological partisanship, the protest against the Leftist dominance in academia is also for a larger reason when it comes to Bharat – the ideas and policies promulgated by them seem to be premised on the principle of exclusivism, which is at variance with the foundation ethos of the nation. Leon Trotsky beautifully shows how communist thinking can fall, with an emphasis on Stalinism:

“Stalinism reestablished the most offensive forms of privileges, imbued inequality with a provocative character, strangled mass self-activity under police absolutism, transformed administration into a monopoly of the Kremlin oligarchy and regenerated the fetishism of power in forms that absolute monarchy dared not dream of.”

The Indian Right aping this form of exclusivism, while understandable as a political move to offset existing entrenched leftist biases in the short term, may not help in the long term with rethinking the system in an inherently Indic and Dharmic manner. Any and all ideologies that are at variance with the Dharmic ethos of cosmopolitanism must be countered in the strongest possible way.

There needs to be an academic market, a marketplace of ideas that needs to flourish, not with a Right-wing mirroring of the Leftist bias but with the multiplicity of thought true intellectualism entails. Just by filling academic positions with Right-wing people by the BJP government will not remove the bigger problem – the ossification of the intellectual space. And re-normalizing this in Universities, to begin with, would be of utmost importance for a dynamic environment and drive that could help the country’s intellectuals contribute to the nation in the best possible way. Government protection taken to absurd heights as well as decentralized silos of learning have empowered the misuse of power and privilege by academics in the University space. The government can do a few things on this front.

The government can start by permitting some for-profit schools to open campuses in India, allowing foreign universities to establish campuses there, requiring establishments to fundraise on their own, forcing them to build and oversee their own endowments, allowing universities to determine their own academic curricula and staff salary administration, and mandating that all central higher education institutions be managed and administered by trustee boards made up of the institutions’ alumni. Centralization of power, such as in the case of making JNU accept the common admission test for students (CUCET) so that interview-based recruitment is not undertaken, in what is seen as a way to bolster the Leftist dominance in the University. However, in this pursuit, one has to be mindful of two things – there must not be a rootless education model or a movement towards a corporatocracy in education. The former is a call to orient all education with an India First approach. It must be rooted in the socio-cultural and civilization ethos of the nation. This should not be with a sense of jingoism or pretense but with a genuine alignment with Bharat. In this path, in this movement, we will have to move towards a sense of transcendence – of moving past the rigid confines of any constructs or ideologies, since that is the Indic way. This is beautifully seen in the Srimad Bhagavad Gita 18.17:

यस्य नाहङ् कृतो भावो बुद्धिर्यस्य न लिप्यते

Where Sri Krishna talks of those who are free from the ego of being the doer, and whose intellect is unattached. The other point of avoiding over-corporatization of the education system is important because the encumbrance of identities can easily be replaced by the encumbrance of self-interest. In fact, while most worldly activities are driven by self-interest, profit-seeking corporates influencing education is the surest path to falling prey to diktats of the ducats! While encouraging competitiveness, efficiency and meritocracy is important, moving to the extremes of corporatization will reduce education to a transactional and mechanical pursuit.

Ānvīkikī, Turiyavaad and Dismantling Dogma

The philosophy of knowledge has fascinated mankind since the times of yore. In the Hellenistic world, everything from Presocratic and Epicurean epistemology to epistemology in Plato’s Middle Dialogues and Neoplatonism dealt with this theme. Insights into the nature of knowledge and reality saw an almost universal turn inwards, drawing from the idea of self-similarity: what is without is within. Gnōthi seautón or ‘know thyself’ is a Delphic maxim that gives the message seen in the Upanishads as ātmā́na viddhi (आत्मानं विद्धि). This knowledge of the self and the science of reasoning thereof is what Chanakya regards as Ānvīkikī (आन्वीक्षिकी). Besides Veda (spiritual chants), Varta (economics) and Dandniti (political sciences), the Arthashastra talks of Ānvīkikī as one of the four types of knowledge – a point also highlighted in the Manusmriti

त्रैविद्येभ्यस्त्रयीं विद्यां दण्डनीतिं च शाश्वतीम् ।
आन्वीक्षिकीं चात्मविद्यां वार्तारम्भांश्च लोकतः ॥

It is regarded as the means by which spiritual, material and policy-related discernment can be undertaken with logical reasoning. It provides a tool to break free from compartmentalized ways of thinking, most dramatically by embracing both positivist and reflectivist traditions of Indian thought, thereby dismantling dogmatic tendencies and encouraging a broadness of thinking to understand the truth of reality. My conceptualization of Turiyavaad is oriented around the idea of Turiya – the fourth, which transcends any logical premise, its negation and its conjunction with its negation. It looks at the inadequacy of any binary, multiplicity or even paradoxical thought to encompass all of reality. It is a natural product of sustained Ānvīkikī or logical philosophy and possibly what ancient Indian universities placed their functioning on – the comprehensive deconstruction of all ideological and conceptual rigidities. While intuition and spiritual insights hold an important role in ancient Indian modes of accessing reality, logical philosophy was not any less of an integral part of this broad stream. Takshashila and Nalanda functioned as multidisciplinary centers with numerous spokes for advanced studies. Academic institutions in ancient India were world-class in terms of their diversity, depth and level of rigor. Teaching and learning was founded on curiosity, inquiry, debates and dialogue, discourses and dialectics, reflective practices, reason, and an approach supported by definitive proof.

While one thing I am against is trying to unnecessarily emulate concepts, establishments or notions of a different era, this is one area where ancient Indian universities can guide us to become more nuanced in our approach. The purpose of learning was, as R. K. Mukherjee says, as follows

Learning in India through the ages had been prized and pursued not for its own sake, if we may so put it, but for the sake, and as a part, of religion. It was sought as the means of self-realization, as the means to the highest end of life – emancipation.

This emancipation cannot be undertaken without a liberation from parochial constructs. At a practical level, today we see funding being a potent tool for skewing the balance of ideologies in various places. A good example is that of Western universities like Harvard University, where centres such as the Lakshmi Mittal and Family South Asia Institute, have apparently become hotbeds of leftist anti-Indian activities. The first step that needs to be taken is reduction of the efficacy of such initiatives. In this case, it could be potentially by making the Mittals more aware of how their money is being used. Thereafter more pressure needs be built by the Indian government and other stakeholders to ensure that the requisite steps are taken by Lakshmi Mittal to prevent his funds from being misused. Disruptive action like protest and strikes can be encouraged in facilities like the AM/NS India. Beyond and besides this, we must learn from an occurrence in ancient India, as highlighted by D. G. Apte

The community also was conscious of its duty to the cause of education. Moneyed people very often used to make arrangements for the food of the students all throughout their courses of education. Sometimes kings of various places sent students to the university for education and made all the necessary arrangements for boarding and lodging for them at State expense.

The encouragement of potential patrons to fund centres in Universities that are more aligned with an Indic perspective is very important. India has a number of industrialists, entrepreneurs and corporates, who can actively finance centres of excellence and education within existing universities. A good financial plan and rigorous research as well as an education framework will help create centres of civilizational push-back. A good example here is how China was outcast and criticized by Americans for the longest time but today the Harvard China Project is normalizing and connecting the disparate worlds with each other. Political patronage can also help in this regard, such as within Bharat, but one must be careful to support and fund only those who can truly contribute and be beneficial for the interests of Bharat. Comprehensive audits and performance feedback rosters can help with ensuring that complacency and entrenched political circles don’t foster in our Universities. ‘Comprehensive‘ is such an important characterization here, in the context of how a truly Bharatiya education system must emulate it, as has been the case in our civilizational past and memory.

Just like in the past, we need to ensure that any patronage or funds taken do not influence the general functioning, spirit and activities of the University, using strict advisory guidelines for the same. The one thing that must be in such guidelines is the advisory for the intake of students from lower-income backgrounds. This has to be ensured so that everybody gets access to education. This model itself is not to be annotated with any absoluteness, for there must be a regular review of the applicability of the same in evolving conditions. It is in the fluidity and freedom of thought and conceptualization of education, in the content and form of taught wisdom that the promise of emancipation lies. It is in the acceptance of the diversities, paradoxes and intricacies of reality that Indian education can truly reclaim its Dharmic roots. It is only then that fulfilment can arise, devoid of vagaries of acute self-interest or dogma. I would like to conclude with the insightful verse,

‘Pols aa gayi Pols’: Kangana Ranaut warns pro-Khalistan singer Diljit Dosanjh amid police crackdown on Khalistan supporters in Punjab

As the police intensify action against Khalistan supporters in Punjab, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut posted an Instagram story in which she warned actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh. In her message to the singer she used the term ‘Pols aa gayi Pols’ which was heard in the viral video of Amritpas Singh that went viral a few days ago.

Kangana Ranaut posted a picture of pulses from Swiggy’s Twitter handle and wrote in her story, “Diljit Dosanjh ji, Pols aa gayi Pols.”

Kangana Ranaut wrote in her Instagram story, “All those who supported Khalistanis remember yours is the next turn. Pols aa chuki hai. (The police have come.) It is not like the times when anyone would do anything. Betrayal of the nation or attempts to break the nation will turn into serious consequences.”

Kangana Ranaut wrote in the next story, “Many Punjabi celebrities are infected with this virus of this Khalistani disease. Beheading India on its map should have serious consequences. The government of India must make strong laws against such criminals. Fill a proper answer to Khalistan in their heads by locking them in jail. That is the way to do fill in the blanks with them all.”

In her second story, Kangana Ranaut shared a post on the Instagram handle of Intrepid Saffron which showed how another Punjabi singer Shubh posted a photo of India’s map with Khalistan colored separately.

It is notable that Diljit Dosanjh is known for being a pro-Khalistani. In June 2020, a demand for an FIR against Diljit Dosanjh was raised after he was seen supporting Gurpatwant Pannu’s and Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) demand for Khalistan. Ludhiana MP Ravneet Singh Bittu had urged then Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh to order that FIRs be filed in every police station of the state against singer Diljit Dosanjh and two others. Kangana Ranaut has called him out in her Instagram stories as police have intensified their action against pro-Khalistan organization Waris Punjab De and its chief Amritpal Singh. Many supporters of Amritpal Singh are arrested while the -year-old leader of the pro-Khalistan organization is on the run.

Steve Martin recreates ‘Father of the Bride’ moment with his ‘Only Murders in the Building’ co-star Selena Gomez

Steve Martin has sent fans down memory lane after posting a photo with his ‘Only Murders in the Building’ co-star, Selena Gomez.

In a brand-new behind-the-scenes picture shared by him on March 21st, the 77-year-old actor looked dashing in a tuxedo as he stood with the Calm Down star, who was decked out in full wedding regalia, including an antique lace gown and matching veil.

He captioned the post, ‘Guess what just happened,’ without revealing who she will be walking down the aisle to.

The comedian then posted another image of her grinning with Martin Short, who is also sporting a black tie ensemble.

The three stars of the Hulu series ‘Only Murders in the Building’ are currently shooting for the upcoming third season.

Many fans noted that Martin’s picture was seemingly a homage to his 1991 movie ‘Father of the Bride.’ He played the titular character in the 1991 original and its 1995 follow-up, ‘Father of the Bride Part II.’ He portrayed the role of George Banks alongside Diane Keaton and his Hulu series co-star and friend Martin Short.

A user posted the famous ‘hot dogs’ dialogue with a gif from the movie and another called it ‘the most relatable scene in movie history.’

The singer of ‘love you like a love song’ also made the most of the moment as she struck a few fun poses in the gown in her own Instagram post. She raised a can of Coke while sitting on the floor, revealing her white combat boots.

‘Only Murders in the Building,’ starring the funny trio as true-crime enthusiast neighbours who become entangled in a murder investigation, debuted on Hulu back August 2021. Its second season premiered in June 2022.

Did the US just admit that woke gender politics is a core part of their foreign policy? What State Department said

On Tuesday, the spokesperson of the State Department, John Kirby, emphasized that the protection and promotion of “LGBTQ+ rights” is an essential element of US foreign policy.

“President Biden has been nothing but consistent about his belief — foundational belief — in human rights,” Kirby responded to the question Tuesday. “And LGBTQ+ rights are human rights, and we’re never going to shy away, be bashful about speaking up for those rights and for individuals to live as they deem fit — as they want to live. And that’s something that’s a core part of our foreign policy and it will remain so.”

During a White House press briefing, Kirby made these comments in response to a question regarding the State Department’s concerns that Russia might be trying to leverage Africa’s “anti-LGBTQ movement” to create a division between the United States and the continent.

Since President Joe Biden assumed office in January 2021, various federal agencies have started exhibiting LGBTQ Pride flags outside their offices, which marks a departure from the Trump administration’s ban on unofficial flags on federal premises and also underscores the regime’s bent toward woke politics.

While most countries have self-interest and adherence to the “rules-based order” as a fulcrum of their foreign policy, the United States’s admittance that woke gender politics play a crucial role in shaping their strategies for dealing with other countries highlights yet another attempt by the US to impose indigenously grown movement to countries that do not historically or culturally relate to it.

In all likelihood, when Kirby insisted that “LGBTQ+ rights” are central to the United States foreign policy, the reference was not just limited to Islamic regimes where exhibiting woke and queer tendencies could have people thrown off building tops; and conservative nations, including Russia, where proponents of LGBTQ rights could disappear for defying state diktats.

But more likely, it is an attempt by the United States to mainstream and normalise the woke gender politics that is taking root within the country, informing its domestic policies and public perception.

Increased focus on teaching pupils in US schools about gender identity

For instance, schools in the United States are increasingly taking to teaching pupils that gender is fluid, with gender identity being one of the essential subjects alongside puberty, consent, sexual orientation and other subjects. Children are subjected to complex concepts such as gender orientation and gender transition, actively encouraging them to identify their “internal gender” and defy conventional norms to come out as trans.

The United States is also vigorously pursuing policies that grant puberty blockers to kids, which stifles their natural growth and aids their gender transition. Puberty blockers are medicines that block the natural development of puberty among children. Certain western countries have permitted children to receive puberty blockers without their parent’s consent.

Besides, several stories of transgender couples marrying and delivering children have also come to the fore in recent times. In 2021, a video of a transgender couple from Washington DC with their baby sparked outrage on the internet.

The normalisation of marriages of trans couples and unnatural deliveries of babies

The couple involved a biological female, Ahanu, who claimed to be the father of the child and a biological male, Petrona, who claimed to be the mother. The video captured Petrona attempting to breastfeed the baby but failing at it because he cannot lactate. The couple used supplements to complement the nutrient requirements of the baby.

In another case, a trans male got pregnant in a one-night stand before transition. In January 2023, a 36-year-old non-binary and queer individual from Seattle, who identifies as a trans dad, documented their experience of giving birth using the reproductive organs they were born with, following a one-night stand during their medical transition.

Danny Wakefield, who was assigned female at birth, came out as transmasculine at 25 years old, underwent testosterone treatment for nine years and had a double mastectomy in Florida during the transition.

Such stories have become all but routine in the United States, where a fierce attempt is underway to not just institutionalise the woke concept of gender identity but also internationalise it by imposing it on other nations by making it the central part of the US foreign policy.

‘A violent mob shouting Tipu-Tipu did not allow installation of the statue of Hindu freedom fighter’: ‘The Wire’ called Hindus ‘badmash’ in Haveri violence

On Tuesday, March 14, clashes broke out at a rally of Hindu organizations, and stone-pelting also transpired in the Karnataka district of Haveri. Muslims in the area have complained that their mosques and homes had been attacked. The police promptly intervened to control the situation. More than 20 people associated with the Hindu organization were arrested. It is notable that Haveri is the home district of Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai.

Biased reporting by the leftist media

As is customary for the leftist media, they reported on this incident in a biased fashion, portraying Hindus as attackers. In its report, the Left-wing propaganda website The Wire featured an image of saffron flags and referred to the accused Hindu side as “Badmash” (rogues).

Screenshot of The Wire report

Mohammad Tanveer, who claims to be a journalist, labeled the perpetrators of the violence a ‘Hindu mob’.

OpIndia contacted the accused party in this case. They stated that the conflict on March 14 was brought about by protracted harassment and unilateral action. Karnataka-based Hindu organizations also referred to media coverage of the news as one-sided reporting. We are not revealing the names for security reasons.

Hindu organizations denied entry into Muslim-dominated areas

OpIndia talked to a few attendees of the March 14 procession who were affiliated with Hindu organizations. One of the attendees claimed that the main objective of the Muslims behind the conflict was to prevent the procession of the Hindu organizations from entering their area of influence. We were told that the place where the violence occurred is under the jurisdiction of the Rattihalli police station. There, it is estimated that 40% of the population is Muslim. In Rattihalli there is a place called Tipunagar which is named after Islamist tyrant Tipu Sultan.

Earlier they halted religious yatras, now they oppose Hindu freedom fighters too’

Speaking to OpIndia, a participant in the procession said they were not taking out any religious procession. The procession taken out on the 14th of March 2023 was of Sangolli Rayanna, the notable revolutionary of Karnataka, who fought the war of independence against the British.

According to a participant in the procession, there was a plan to erect a statue of revolutionary Rayanna on March 9 at an intersection inside Rattihalli. However, the statue could not be installed since the Muslim group obstructed the procession from reaching Kotioni on that day.

Rayanna a Hindu revolutionary, Muslims hail Tipu Sultan only

A person who took part in the rally said, “Muslims told us that this revolutionary Rayanna is a Hindu, therefore we will protest.” We were also told that the Muslim side was screaming “Tipu-Tipu” in front of Rayanna’s statue. On March 9, 2023, the Muslim side allegedly carried stones and iron rods to block the Hindu side as they marched through the Koti Oni region. However, the police intervened and the standoff did not escalate. It has been alleged that women were also standing behind those who stopped the procession.

We also received a video via which we learned that Muslim residents of the area where the procession for revolutionary Rayanna was prevented, celebrate their religious events on the streets with much fanfare and without any hindrances. A crowd can be seen along the entire road in the footage, and various announcements are being made by setting up multiple big music systems. Provocative comments were also made in this video, in which the crowd is seen screaming and supporting it. It is said that the video was shot during an event in December of last year.

Visuals from Rattahelli

Police did not take action in a prior incident

According to a person who was part of the procession bearing the statue of the freedom fighter Rayanna, on March 9 when about 100 people from the Muslim side obstructed their path, a police complaint was filed. Yet, the police have been accused of not acting in this case. It is said that the police did not take the complaint seriously. We have the video of the incident from March 9. In this footage, a frenzied mob can be seen smashing the police barricade. In another video from March 9 itself, a large crowd is seen raising slogans before the police.

Mob breaking the police barricade on March 9, 2023

Although two Muslim youths named Qasim and Mammu halted the installation of revolutionary Rayanna’s idol on March 9 and no action was taken by the police, Hindu organizations once more brought the same statue of Rayanna five days later on March 14, 2023. It is said that the police granted permission for this rally on March 9. A participant in the march alleges that although there was a large police presence during the March 14 procession, Muslims were shouting “Aao-Aao” and inciting from a distance with their hand gestures.

OpIndia was informed that the incident infuriated the procession’s participants and violence ensued.  However, the police force deployed on the site soon brought the situation under control. Local people said that the name of the persons leading the Muslim side is Qasim Qazi and Mammu Qazi, who seem to be brothers. Qasim is a welder by profession.

31 members of Hindu organisations arrested so far

Local Haveri district residents and members of the Hindu group informed us that 31 members of the Hindu organization had been arrested by the police so far. A few of these 31 youths have got bail. Hindu organization members claimed that the police action in the incident of violence was one-sided and that no Muslims were arrested in the March 9 and 14 episodes.

RSS members were assaulted in December 2022

People from the local Hindu groups said that three Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS) volunteers were assaulted in December 2022 at the location where the revolutionary Sangolli Rayanna’s procession was stopped. It is alleged that prior to conducting the “Path Sanchalan,” these RSS members went to inspect the local route map. One victim of the assault, according to the information we have, has still not fully recovered.

Locals allege that even in this incident, the police did nothing to effectively stop the attackers. A video of the incident was sent to us. It is seen in the video that a mob was brutally thrashing the RSS workers in front of the police.

RSS worker assaulted in December 2022

‘Religious processions of Hindus have been stopped earlier as well’, locals say

Hindu programmes have been interrupted numerous times before the incidents like the attack on RSS members in December 2022, and the disruption of a procession on March 9, 2023, a local Haveri resident informed OpIndia. We were told that during the immersion of Ganpati, worshippers had been pelted with stones on numerous occasions in the past, which caused communal tension in the area. A victim revealed to us that following these violent episodes, even the police would vent their anger on the members of the Hindu organisations.

The Jamia Masjid of Rattihalli is the mosque that has been regularly cited in various media reports. A participant in the procession told OpIndia that numerous Muslim community members frequently congregate near Jamia Mosque and molest girls who are passing by. They also assert that a Hindu temple once stood where the Jamia Masjid now stands.

It was also demanded that this accusation be investigated. During a conversation with OpIndia, some locals claimed that Haveri is severely affected by ‘Land Jihad’ and ‘Love Jihad’. We were also told that the Muslim population in the area has suddenly seen a spike in the last few years.

‘Congress leaders want to frame us’

The procession’s participants told OpIndia that Siddaramaiah, the former chief minister of Karnataka and prominent leader of the Congress party, was there on the day of the incident just a few kilometres away from Haveri. They alleged that Siddaramaiah and other Congress leaders were behind the unilateral action by the police against Hindus in March 14 violence in Haveri. We were informed that under this pressure, the names of those who were not even present during the incident were also inserted in the FIR.

Moreover, OpIndia has received a video of a woman who claimed that her son is innocent and has been falsely implicated.

‘How long will the Hindus be compelled to tolerate atrocities?’, questions VHP

Some Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) office bearers in Karnataka told OpIndia that the Muslims’ objection to letting the procession in honour of the revolutionary pass was what sparked the dispute. In an interview with OpIndia, Vinod Bansal, the national spokesperson for the VHP, described the clash in Haveri as the outcome of the long-standing persecution of Hindus by extremist forces.

Police taking legal action

According to the Superintendent of Police in the Haveri area, some 100 rally participants engaged in vandalism and stone-throwing. The police claim that after identifying the culprits, action is being taken against them.

The situation in Haveri is calm at present. Although life is back to normal in the area, the police are closely monitoring the situation.

He condemned Mallanna and activist Vithal’s arrest and spoke to the officials to take stock of the situation. Bandi accused the BRS government of silencing the voices of those who questioned the state government and demanded the immediate release of Vithal and Mallanna.

In a tweet, he wrote, “Democracy is under threat in Telangana. Let’s Save Democracy! KCR is digging his own grave by stifling the voices which are questioning his tyranny. Earnest request to media organisations not to budge into the pressure of BRS govt. Visited Tenmaar Mallanna garu & Telangana Vittal garu’s residences & spoke to their family members following their undemocratic arrest by Telangana police. Assured to stand by the families. Are these police or BRS goons? CM is resorting to these tactics after his son’s role came out in paper leakage issue and daughter’s role in Liquor Scam. BJP Telangana demands for immediate release of both of them unconditionally.”

Locals revealed police officials were dressed in mufti when they arrived at the Q News office. He was detained after five complaints were lodged against him in Hyderabad city, Cyberabad and Rachakonda by members of Telangana Jagruti and others, allegedly after he uploaded a video on channel’s YouTube channel regarding ED questioning MLC K Kavitha. A cybercrime complaint was also made against him at Rachakonda.

All the mobile phones of the detained persons were allegedly taken away by the police.

Q News office attack

Govt will attempt to build a Kartrapur-style corridor to Sharda Peeth in PoK: Amit Shah while e-inaugurating Mata Sharda Devi Temple in Kashmir

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday said that the Indian government will make attempts to build a corridor to Sharda Peeth in Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, like the Kartarpur corridor, so that devotees can participate in the Shardha Yatra. Amit Shah made the comments while virtually inaugurating the Mata Sharda Devi Temple, located along LoC in the Kupwara district in north Kashmir.

The doors of the Mata Sharda Devi temple located in Teetwal village of the Kupwara district of North Kashmir have been opened for devotees from today which is also the first day of Chaitra Navratri. The temple is just 500 meters away from Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK). It has been built by Sri Sringeri Math and Seva Sharda Samiti Kashmir.

The holy place was inaugurated virtually by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) National President and member of parliament for Bengaluru South, Tejaswi Surya also attended the occasion.

Addressing the event, the home minister said, “Ravinder Pandita (head of Save Sharda committee) has asked for a Kartarpur-style corridor for Shardha yatra and that the government of India will surely make attempts in this direction, there is no doubt in that.”

Sharada Peeth is a ruined Hindu temple located in the Neelum Valley of PoK, built several centuries ago. Sharda Peeth is one of the 18 Maha Shakti Peeths. It is near the Line of Control (LoC) where Neelum (Kishanganga) rivers meet Madhumati and Sargun. It was constructed in the first century during the Kushan Empire. The temple was constructed by King Lalitaditya.

A Kartarpur-style corridor for Sharda Peeth has long been demanded by Kashmiri Pandits for a long time. Residents of the village have contributed some of their lands to the committee for the temple’s construction. A mosque and a gurudwara are also being built around 136 miles from the historic site.

The Kartapur Corridor was opened in November 2019, which allows Sikh devotees in India to visit Gurdwara Darbar Sahib near Lahore in Pakistan without requiring a visa. The 4.7 km long corridor connects the Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan with Gurudwara Dera Baba Nanak in the Gurdaspur district in Indian Punjab.

The Mata Sharda Devi Temple has been built by Kashmir’s Save Sharda Samiti and Sringeri Math to revive the pilgrimage to Sharda Peeth, which stopped after 1948 as the main temple fell under the PoK. The temple has been built on a place which used to be the location of a camp for the Sharda Peeth pilgrimage.

During his address, Amit Shah further said, “Today I am not there but whenever I come to Jammu, my journey will start after offering prayers at this temple.” He referred to it as the beginning of a new era and also congratulated everyone, including Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, who contributed to this important milestone.

He said that the installation of the idol is the first step in the process of discovering the Sharda civilization. “It is believed to mark the start of the enlightenment’s foundation, tying sentience to the boundless consciousness of the cosmos. People would travel great distances to visit this location to visit the mother and connect with their culture.”

Amit Shah remarked that the abrogation of Article 370 is taking the Union Territory back to its old traditions, culture, and the ‘Ganga-Jamuna Tehzeeb.’

He further mentioned that Sharda Peeth was formerly regarded as the knowledge centre of the Indian subcontinent. “People from both India and other countries used to travel here for learning and spirituality. It was here that Adi Shankaracharya acquired enlightenment.” The Sharda script bears Goddess Sharda’s name.

He concluded by saying that it is our responsibility to keep Jammu and Kashmir peaceful and assured that the long-standing customs of the valley will be reinstated.

Not just India: Adani group eyes to develop airports across the world

Adani Airports Chief Executive Officer Arun Bansal on Wednesday said the company’s ambition is to be the leading airport operator not only in India but in the world.

Addressing the media on the sidelines of the CAPA India Aviation Summit event in Delhi on Wednesday, Bansal said, “Our ambition is we want to be the leading airport operators not only in India but in the world.” Bansal said, “We will selectively be looking for financial sense right now. We are focusing on India. Our ambition is looking at opportunities where we can contribute and makes financial sense.”

Adani has seven airports in the country and the company has plans to develop more airports in the country as well as in other parts of the world.

CEO Arun Bansal lauded the growth of the Indian economy and aviation development.

“We have been discussing becoming the second-largest economy in the world. Aviation will play a very significant role by talk about GDP (gross domestic product) growth of any country,” he said.

However, Adani Airport Holdings talks about the future of Indian aviation and expectations, Bansal said.

“India to have 1 billion air passengers by 2040, with passenger traffic growing at a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 8.5 per cent over the next 20 years,” Bansal said, adding, “With a handsome growth in air passenger traffic this year to pre-pandemic levels, operationalising of new airports with stimulus from the UDAN scheme, and over 30 cities getting dual airports over the course of time, air passenger traffic will touch the 1-billion mark by 2040.”

When asked whether Adani is looking to acquire more airports in the country through bids, CEO Bansal clarified, “Once the tender documents come out, we will study and we will make a strategy. Our strategy is simple to create a scale… if bid condition is right for us, we will bid.”

“We don’t make categories about the strength and size of airports because…”Bansal said, adding, “India has a very ambitious plan with UDAN scheme. For the regional aircraft carriers, we will look at the merit of the airport and merit of the potential growth,” he added.

All seven Adani airports saw an increase of 92 per cent in domestic and 133 per cent in international travel as compared with the figures from last year. There has also been a rise in the number of domestic flights (58 per cent) and international flights (61 per cent), according to a statement from Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL).

VHP calls for the cancellation of membership of all MPs and MLAs who have used fake caste certificates

0

Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has demanded the cancellation of membership of all those “fraudulent” MPs and MLAs who won reserved seats by submitting “fake caste certificates.”

Reacting over the recent Kerala High Court order, setting aside the election of CPI(M)’s A Raja from Devikulam Assembly seat in Idukki district, VHP spokesperson Vinod Bansal said here on Tuesday, “Hindu society will not tolerate such unfairness against the members of our SC brothers at any cost.”

“A Raja’s membership was cancelled from Kerala’s Devikulam constituency. It was found that he became an MLA by contesting for an SC seat using a fake caste certificate. When you scan the data, you will find that there are innumerable such MLAs in the country, who are sitting in Parliament, and hurting the pride of the SC community,” the VHP leader said at the Bharat Swagat Utsav programme here Tuesday.

He further added, “We demand that the membership of all such fraudulent Christian MPs and MLAs should be cancelled, who are sitting in the Houses using such fake caste certificates by cheating on the rights of Scheduled Castes”.

The Kerala High Court on Monday cancelled the result of the assembly election held at Devikulam constituency in Idukki district, noting that the MLA does not qualify to contest from the constituency.

The High Court set aside the election on a petition filed by Congress leader D Kumar, who was the runner-up in the 2021 Assembly polls, alleging that Raja was not qualified to contest the Devikulam seat reserved for the Scheduled Caste (SC) community.

Kumar had alleged that Raja belongs to the Christian community and does not qualify to contest for a seat reserved for the Schedule Caste (SC).

The elections on the constituency of Devikulam were held in 2021, and CPM leader A Raja won by a margin of over 7000 votes.

Devikulam happens to be a seat reserved for the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Caste community.

9 pro-Khalistan Sikh groups from 6 countries including Pakistan responsible for spreading terror and violence in Punjab: Report

0

According to a report in the Economic Times, police and intelligence officials in Punjab have informed that nine organisations operating out of six different countries, including Pakistan, are to blame for the growth of terror and bloodshed in the province.

The three organisations linked to Pakistan are the Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF) of Ranjeet Singh Neeta, the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) of Wadhawa Singh Babbar, and the Khalistan Commando Force of Paramjit Singh Panjwar (KCF).

Hardeep Singer Nijjar of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF) is based in Surrey, South East London, while Gurjeet Singh Cheema of Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) is based in Canada and Gurmeet Singh aka Bagga and Bhupinder Singh Bhind of KZF are based in Germany.

On the basis of an assessment made by the law enforcement agencies, another key ally, namely Gursharanvir Singh, is based in the UK, Gurjinder Singh in Italy and Purshottam Singh is stationed in France.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, the leader of one of the most infamous organisations called Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), hails from the US and masquerades as a political activist.

The most significant role is played by the Indo-Canadian narcotics syndicate, known as ‘Brothers Keepers’ gang, which is comprised of the Grewal and Dhaliwal clans. SFJ chief Pannu is being funded by them, as per a dossier created by government agencies, and they are actively working together to ship Colombian cocaine to Mexico cartels.

A senior Punjab official in charge of counter-insurgency operations informed, “The attempts to revive Khalistan sentiments in Punjab are being clandestinely aided by these groups, as was evident from a series of incidents of vandalism at the Indian High Commission.”

The Sikh population in Canada, which is largely concentrated in the provinces of Ontario and British Columbia, is observing a steady rise in the number of criminal gangs with Punjabi roots operating out of Toronto and Vancouver.

“The number of gangsters who migrated from Punjab to Canada for murder, attempt to murder and UAPA cases are rising with the likes of Lakhbir Singh Landa, Goldy Brar, Arshdeep Singh aka, Arsh Dalla among others,” stated another official.

Officials also mentioned that Khalistan has caused division among the community in the gurdwara. “Among the diaspora, the Khalistan issue has been a divisive issue in gurdwaras. The gurdwaras with Khalistani leadership funnel funds into activities supporting the movement.”

Donations are also being channelled through civil society organisations in India to strengthen and support such organisations.

The development came amidst intense drama surrounding Sikh Khalistan leader and chief of ‘Waris Punjab De’ organisation, Amritpal Singh. He has been designated a fugitive by law enforcements, and they are searching for him.

Many of his close associates, including his uncle and driver, have already been taken into custody by the authorities. Amritpal and his aides are also on the radar of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) over charges of possessing illegal arms after the recovery of illegal weapons from them.
