IND vs AUS, 4th Test: PM Modi arrives at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad

0

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday arrived at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad to watch the first day of the final Test match of Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023, with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Gujarat Governor Acharya Devvrat, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, state’s Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi, BCCI president Roger Binny and BCCI secretary Jay Shah receive him. Australian PM Albanese said he and Prime Minister Modi will be at the toss for the fourth and final Test for the ongoing series between India and Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

PM Modi and his Australian counterpart will be in attendance on the opening day of the fourth Test on Thursday.

However, the Australian PM did not say if it will be him or PM Modi who will toss the coin.

Banners of Prime Minister Modi and his Australian counterpart have gone up at the Narendra Modi stadium ahead of the final Test.

India is currently leading the series 2-1. However, the hosts need to secure an outright victory in the final Test to qualify for the final of the ICC World Test Championship.

Should they quality, India will be up against the same opponent in the battle for the coveted Test crown. The championship clash will be staged in London from June 7 onwards.

India had won the first Test at Nagpur by an innings and 132 runs and followed it up with a six-wicket win in the second Test at Delhi. Both Tests got over in a span of three days.

However, the visitors bounced back admirably to win the third Test at Indore nine wickets inside three days, thereby avoiding a series whitewash.

India’s Test squad for the fourth Test against Australia: Rohit Sharma (Captain), K L Rahul, Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, KS Bharat (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Shreyas Iyer, Suryakumar Yadav, Umesh Yadav and Jaydev Unadkat.

Under PM Modi, India more likely to give military response to Pakistan’s provocations, says US Intelligence report

According to the Annual Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Community, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is more likely than in the past to respond with military force to perceived or real Pakistani provocations.

The report said the crises between India and Pakistan are more concerning because both are nuclear-armed states. However, Pakistan has a long history of supporting anti-India terrorist groups but, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is more likely to respond with military force to perceived or real Pakistani provocations, than it was in the past, the threat assessment report said.

“Crises between India and Pakistan are of particular concern because of the risk of an escalatory cycle between two nuclear-armed states. New Delhi and Islamabad probably are inclined to reinforce the current calm in their relationship following both sides’ renewal of a cease-fire along the Line of Control in early 2021,” the Annual Threat Assessment of the US Intelligence Community report said.

It further said, “Pakistan has a long history of supporting anti-India militant groups, and under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India is more likely than in the past to respond with military force to perceived or real Pakistani provocations.”
“Each side’s perception of heightened tensions raises the risk of conflict, with violent unrest in Kashmir or a militant attack in India being potential flashpoints,” it said.

Interstate conflict, state instability, and other governance challenges pose direct and indirect challenges to US interests at home and abroad, and to its allies and partners.

Rising tensions underpinned by intensifying strategic competition present numerous consequences for US and partners’ national security.

Countries’ increased military operations across a number of geographic hotspots risk the possibility of inadvertent escalation and the potential for interstate conflict, the statement.

Russia’s war in Ukraine coupled with the Covid-19 pandemic has increased poverty, hindered economic growth, and widened inequality, raising the conditions that are ripe for domestic unrest, insurgencies, democratic backsliding, and authoritarianism.

The war in Ukraine has demonstrated how interstate conflict affects not only the parties directly involved, but can have broader cascading security, economic, and humanitarian implications on a regional–and even global–scale. The following are a few of the potential conflicts between states that could spillover with repercussions that may require immediate U.S. attention, the Threat Assesment Report said.

This annual report of worldwide threats to the national security of the United States reflects the collective insights of the Intelligence Community, which is committed every day to providing the nuanced, independent, and unvarnished intelligence that policymakers, warfighters, and domestic law enforcement personnel need to protect American lives and America’s interests anywhere in the world.

This assessment focuses on the most direct, serious threats to the United States in the upcoming year.

Pakistan: Aurat March turns violent as police beat up women, transgender people

The Aurat March, a rally conducted every year by women across Pakistan on International Women’s Day to voice their grievances and celebrate womanhood turned violent on Wednesday amid clash between the marchers and the police, reported Geo News.

A violent fight broke out outside the Press Club today as women and transgender people from various fields gathered for the Aurat March rally, where the police beat attendees with batons and allegedly tried to “stop” the rally. A verbal spat between the participants of the rally and the police occurred after they questioned the large number of transgender people trying to join the rally, the police said, adding that large groups of women were joining the march, reported Geo News.

Women at the march alleged that the police had “tried hard to stop the rally”.

During the rally, participants chanted slogans for women’s rights and were joined by transgender people, whom the police stopped to question.

Soon there was serious disorder outside the Islamabad Press Club, and the marchers began to raise slogans against the government and the media, reported Geo News.

Several reporters present at the event voiced concerns over the fact that despite covering the incident peacefully all morning, they had come under the wraps of the fight. A woman reporter and a cameraman from a local news channel also sustained injuries.

Federal Minister for Climate Change Sherry Rehman also participated in the rally and strongly condemned the violence that broke out, reported Geo News.

Taking to her Twitter handle, Rehman said, “Friends from Aurat Azadi March are rightly upset. The Islamabad police had NO business laathi charging a small peaceful procession. It is the women holding laathis that need to be pushed back, not progressive women. Sad to see this happening. Will seek an inquiry.”

In another tweet, she said, “I strongly condemn this violence and have sought an inquiry on the incident. There is no excuse for this. That too on Int’l Women’s Day. This is not what we fought for and will not tolerate it. Has been brought to the Interior Minister’s notice.”

Following the spate that broke out, a number of people and organisations have spoken up against the administrations and condemned the brutality, reported Geo News.

The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) tweeted, “HRCP deplores the use of force by the Islamabad police against citizens at the Aurat Azadi March. We are also concerned by reports that religious organizations have tried to hinder women from taking part in the march. Women have as much right to peaceful assembly as any citizen.”

Aurat March was also organised in Ghotki, where the marchers shouted slogan, “as long as women are getting killed, we will continue fighting.”

NCP extends support to the NDPP-BJP government in Nagaland, CM Neiphiu Rio to lead an all-party govt with no opposition

On 8th March 2023, the Nationalist Congress Party extended its support to the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) government in Nagaland which was formed after the recent assembly elections in the state. NCP’s national general secretary Narendra Verma issued a press release on Wednesday to make this announcement.

NCP had earlier on Monday said that it will support the govt. On Wednesday, party supremo Sharad Pawar accepted the proposal of the party’s state unit to sit with the treasury bench in the house. NCP is the third largest party in the assembly with 7 MLAs, after NDPP’s 25 and BJP’s 12. In a press release, the party said that its state unit proposed to support the govt, and the party accepted this decision.

The press release says, “The recent election of Nagaland Assembly which take place on 27th February 2023 and on subsequently on 2nd March 2023 NCP who contested on 12 seats got elected 7 seats. The first meeting of the NCP Legislature Party took place on 4th March at Kohima the capital of Nagaland. In the said meeting, there was a discussion on who is going to be the leader of the NCP Legislature Party, The Deputy Leader, Chief Whip, Whip, and Spokesperson.”

According to this press release, the NCP MLAs elected Er Picto Shohe as the Leader of the NCP Legislature Party and P. Longon as the Deputy Leader of the NCP Legislature Party. Namri Nchang was elected as the chief whip and Y Mhonbemo Humtsoe was elected as the whip of the party. S Tolho Yeptho will be the spokesperson of the party.

The press release further said, “There was also discussion regarding whether the NCP is going to be part of the government or going to play the role of the main opposition party. The local newly elected MLAs & the NCP Local unit of Nagaland were of the opinion that we must be part of the government which is going to be headed by Mr. N Rio, Chief of (NDPP) Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party & Chief Minister of Nagaland in the larger interest of the State Of Nagaland and our own good relationship with Mr. N Rio.”

It added, “This was left to the Nationalist Congress Party’s National President Hon’ble Shri. Sharad Pawar to be part or not to be part of the Nagaland Government. On Tuesday morning after listening to the North East in charge he took the decision to accept the leadership of Mr. N. Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland in the larger interest of the State of Nagaland & subsequently he also cleared the proposed list of NCP Legislature Party Leader and his team.”

With 25 MLAs of NDPP and 12 from BJP, the NDA alliance is in a comfortable majority in the 60-member Nagaland majority. Moreover, all other parties have extended support to the government. With NCP also formally supporting the govt, Rio will be leading an all-party government.

National People’s Party (NPP), which has won 5 seats in the polls, has also announced support for the govt. It is notable that NPP is part of NEDA and has formed the govt along with BJP in Meghalaya after the recent elections.

Lok Janshakti Party-Ram Vilas (LJP-RV) and Ramdas Athawale-led Republican Party of India (RPI-A), with 2 MLAs each and partners of National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the Centre, have also extended their support to the Rio govt. The lone JD(U) MLA also supported the govt, a move that angered the party.

The only party that has not officially supported the govt is the Naga Peoples Front (NPF). The party has said that it is willing to sit in the opposition, adding that if invited to come together for the greater interest of resolving the Naga issue, it will be willing to accept that.

NDPP leader and outgoing CM Neiphiu Rio took oath as the chief minister of Nagaland for the fifth term on 7 March. 9 other MLAs also took oath as ministers, 5 from NDPP and 4 from BJP. While all other parties have extended their support to the government, it is not clear if they will be accommodated in the government. The government already has the maximum number of ministers allowed under article 164 (1a) of the constitution, which caps the number of ministers at 15% of the total number of legislators in the house.

Bihar: Artillery shell explodes in a residential area during military training in Gaya, 3 killed and many injured

On Wednesday, 8th March 2023, a canon shell that fell on a civilian area and exploded in Gaya of Bihar resulted in three fatalities and over six injuries. The explosion took place during a military training session. According to reports, the three deceased people belonged to the same family.

SHO of Barachatti police station confirmed this incident. He said that the incident took place around 8.30 a.m during artillery firing training in Guber Bind village under Barachatti police station in the district. The injured were taken to the Gaya-based Magadh Medical College. Angry locals protested against the district government after the tragedy.

In the Trilokpur area of Gaya’s Dobhi block, the army maintains a firing range for training purposes. This firing range has an impact on the nearby settlements, as cannonballs frequently land near surrounding houses.

On Wednesday morning, the incident occurred, converting a joyous Holi mood into absolute sadness. Three persons were killed and several others were injured when a shell fell close to Govind Manjhi’s home in the Gular Bed area, which comes under the Barachatti police station area. The accident resulted in the deaths of three persons, including Govind, his daughter Kanchan, and his son-in-law Suraj Kumar.

Six others were reportedly injured. Three of them are identified as Geeta Kumari, Pintu Manjhi, and Raso Devi. The Manjhi family was celebrating Holi when the canon ball fell in their house.

SSP Gaya Ashish Bharti said, “After we received the information, the officers left for Gular Bed village. We can only come up with a statement after the initial investigation of the incident. Forward action is being taken by the police.”

‘Arvind Kejriwal conspiring against Manish Sisodia to stop disclosures of secrets’: Manoj Tiwari

0

BJP MP Manoj Tiwari on Wednesday claimed that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was ‘conspiring’ against his former deputy Manish Sisodia at Tihar jail, which comes within the functional ambit of the Delhi government.

Sisodia, who stepped down as the deputy CM in the wake of his arrest in connection with the Delhi liquor policy case, is currently lodged at Tihar jail. Claiming he “knows a lot of secrets”, Tiwari dubbed Kejriwal as the “master of conspiracies” while stressing repeatedly that all prisons in Delhi come within the administrative ambit of the present AAP government.

The BJP MP’s remark came barely hours after the AAP alleged that the central government was “conspiring to kill” its leaders.

“Why is PM Modi silent on the matter? Unable to dent or weaken the AAP politically, you are throwing our leaders behind the bars. Now, they are even plotting to kill our leaders,” AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj said earlier on Wednesday.

Hitting back at Bhardwaj, Tiwari questioned how an AAP leader’s life could be at risk in a jail which is run by its own government.

“On hearing that the AAP has said there is a threat to Manish Sisodia’s life in jail, I smelt a rat. I am surprised and shocked at the conspiracies of the AAP. Not just in Delhi, people across the country now know that Arvind Kejriwal is a master of lies and conspiracies. All Delhi jails come under the AAP government, or under Kejriwal. Manish Sisodia holds a lot of secrets about Kejriwal. I fear that Kejriwal could be conspiring against Sisodia. How can his (Sisodia’s) life be under threat in a jail which comes under the AAP government?” Tiwari said.

Invoking viral videos of jailed AAP leader Satyendar Jain purportedly receiving personalised body massages inside Tihar jail, Tiwari said the reason why the former minister received privileged treatment behind bars was that the jail comes under the Kejriwal government.

Jain, who is also lodged at Tihar in connection with a money laundering case, tendered his resignation as a minister along with Sisodia.

“Is Kejriwal conspiring to kill or harm Sisodia in a bid to stop him from disclosing his (CM’s) secrets? They are deliberately peddling a false narrative that Sisodia is under threat from the BJP. Though Satyendar Jain claimed to have suffered a memory loss in court, there were videos of him being administered body massages in jail. As was seen in the videos, key documents had been shared and discussed with him inside the jail. So, how can there be a threat to Sisodia’s life in a jail that comes under the Delhi government? A conspiracy to eliminate someone in a bid to stop him from disclosing secrets is a matter of concern,” the BJP MP said.

Tiwari said the Tihar authorities should beef up security for Sisodia.

“I urge the jail authorities to provide tighter security to Sisodia and ensure that his security needs are taken care of properly behind bars,” he said.

Earlier, on Wednesday, Tihar officials said Sisodia has been assigned a separate ward in the interest of his personal security, adding that fellow inmates in his new ward are not gangsters or hardened criminals and are known to have maintained “good conduct”.

Earlier on Wednesday, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed Sisodia lodged in cell No.1 at Tihar, which he alleged houses some of the most dreaded criminals and murderers.

Responding to the allegations, a prison official said, “Manish Sisodia has been assigned a segregated ward keeping in mind his personal security. The ward CJ-1, where he is lodged currently, has a few inmates who are not gangsters and have been maintaining good conduct.”

They further said that the allocation of a separate cell to the AAP leader would also enable him to meditate or do other activities without any disturbance.

“All arrangements, as per Jail Rules, are in place to ensure his safety and security. Any aspersions cast about his cell are unfounded,” the prison official said.

Sisodia was arrested by the CBI on February 26 in a case related to alleged irregularities in the framing and implementation of the excise policy of the National Capital Territory of Delhi (GNCTD).

Special Judge MK Nagpal on March 6 remanded Sisodia to 14 days in judicial custody.

As Arvind Kejriwal skips Holi to ‘pray for the nation’, read how he has been skipping the festival of colours since 2018

As India gets drenched in the festival of colors, there are many news updates about politicians from various parties celebrating Holi. But there is a politician in India who has hardly played colours on the occasion of Holi every year since 2017. Aam Aadmi Party chief and Delhi’s chief minister Arvind Kejriwal has once again made it to the news for not celebrating Holi in 2023, this time for yet another new reason.

Arvind Kejriwal is not celebrating Holi in 2023 because of the arrest of his accomplices Manish Sisodia and Satyendra Jain in corruption cases. He instead visited Rajghat to pay his tributes to MK Gandhi, and then performed a 7-hour meditation starting from 10 AM today, to “pray for the party.” In a video message released on Tuesday, Kejriwal said that the country’s situation is worrying and therefore he will pray for the country instead of celebrating Holi.

However, this is not the first time that Arvind Kejriwal is not celebrating Holi. He has kept himself away from playing with colours since 2017. Every year, he has cited new reasons for not celebrating Holi.

Twitter handle The Skin Doctor has mentioned how Kejriwal has not celebrated Holi every year for the last several years. It said in a tweet, “He as such hasn’t been playing Holi since 2018 for some reason or the other, sometimes genuine, sometimes not so. This time also he didn’t want to play, a blessing in disguise is Sisodia’s arrest, gave him a worthy excuse to avoid.”

In 2018, Holi was celebrated on 2nd March. In that year, Arvind Kejriwal did not celebrate Holi in support of traders. The Delhi Development Authorities were sealing certain businesses in some areas of Delhi according to the development plans of those areas. Arvind Kejriwal announced that he would not celebrate Holi because he wanted to support the traders affected by the decisions of the DDA. However, traders had termed this as “natak-baazi”, saying this was a gimmick to hide the failures of the govt to fulfil election promises.

In 2019, Holi was celebrated on the 21st of March. Arvind Kejriwal again did not celebrate Holi this year. He declared that he would not celebrate Holi as a mark of respect for the martyrs of the Pulwama terror attack. On 14th February 2019, a CRPF convoy was attacked by an Islamist terrorist of Jaish-e-Mohammad claiming the lives of more than 40 CRPF jawans.

The next Holi was celebrated on 10th March 2020. It was almost a fortnight after the anti-Hindu Delhi riots that took place on 24th February 2020. That time, Arvind Kejriwal said that he would not celebrate Holi in wake of communal violence in northeast Delhi.

The next year, Holi was celebrated on 29th March 2021. It was the time during which the second wave of the Coronavirus pandemic hit India. At that time, Arvind Kejriwal said that because of the increasing number of cases of coronavirus disease, he would not be celebrating Holi.

In 2022, Holi was celebrated on the 18th of March. Aam Aadmi Party’s government was formed in Punjab and Bhagwant Mann was sworn in as the chief minister of the border state on 16th March 2022. Though Arvind Kejriwal did not make any announcement regarding celebrating or not celebrating the festival, there is no media report suggesting that he celebrated Holi last year.

In 2023, he is not celebrating Holi because his close associate and former deputy chief minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia, and another minister in his cabinet Satyedra Jain both are arrested. Arvind Kejriwal was seen meditating in the photos shared on social media. In this way, Arvind Kejriwal has not celebrated Holi since 2018.

Maharashtra: Sahil Sayyed in Ahmednagar charged with raping a Hindu woman, was earlier accused of abusing his wife and harassing her friends

On Monday, Maharashtra Police registered an FIR against a person named Sahil Mohammed Shakir Sayyed for establishing forceful sexual relations with a Hindu woman and issuing death threats to her. The accused also forced the woman to follow Islamic rituals and practices.

The complaint has been registered under IPC sections 376 (rape), 377, 504 (insult intended to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation), and also under sections 3(1)(r), 3(1)(s), 3(2) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

FIR copy obtained by OpIndia

According to the FIR copy obtained by OpIndia, the victim and the man got married as per the Islamic rituals in the year 2022. The woman post-marriage got a new Islamic name and began staying with her husband in the Mukundnagar area of the city. The accused, after a few days, began eyeing the Hindu female friends of the victim and would harass them by calling them at odd times. He would also defame the victim woman on calls.

The incident came to light when one of the female friends of the victim called her and informed her about Sayyed. She complained that the latter called at 1:30 midnight one day and harassed her over the phone. Later, the accused also happened to issue death threats to the victim woman. The woman then reached the police station and registered a complaint against her husband.

The accused was called and the matter was somehow settled by the police. The duo then reached home, where the accused turned furious and picked up a rod to hit the woman for approaching the police. However, to save herself from the beatings, the woman consumed a bottle of chemicals. She was immediately taken to the hospital by the accused. The incident is said to have happened on December 21, 2022.

Complaint filed by the victim woman

Sayyed then asked the victim to go to her maternal aunt for rest till January 10 this year. But in the meantime, he brought another Hindu woman to his home and began staying with her. The victim never returned to her home after December 21 and began staying with her sister, as per the FIR.

The man then forced the woman to return and stay together with him and his new wife. On refusal, he barged into her residence and established sexual relations with her without her permission. The woman in the complaint mentioned that she was brutally raped and assaulted by the accused.

Complaint filed by the victim

“He raped me and forced me to stay with him and his new wife. He also told me that he wanted to establish sexual relations with me and his new wife at the very same time. He said he wanted to see how it feels. I refused. He then threatened me and used abusive language for my family,” the woman stated in the complaint.

As per the complaint, Sayyed has also snatched all her jewellery and assets including Rs 1.25 lakhs and is refusing to return them. The woman further said that the accused has a total of 3 wives including the new one. He has issued death threats to the victim and has been using derogatory language for the family members of the victim.

The complaint in the case has been registered under IPC sections 376 (rape), 377, 504 (insult intended to provoke breach of the peace), 506 (criminal intimidation) and also under sections 3(1)(r), 3(1)(s), 3(2) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989.

Migrant case: Bihar court to hear a complaint against Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin on 18 March, Pappu Yadav’s party had filed the complaint

On Saturday, 18th March 2023, the chief judicial magistrate’s court in Muzaffarpur of Bihar will hear a complaint against Tamil Nadu’s chief minister MK Stalin regarding the alleged violence against the migrant Bihari workers in Tamil Nadu. The case was filed by Jan Adhikar Party’s district president Ved Prakash on 4th March 2023 at the CJM’s court in Muzaffarpur district in Bihar. It is notable that the Jan Adhikar Party’s chief Pappu Yadav has been vocal about this issue right from the beginning.

While filing the complaint, Ved Prakash said, “Youths from Bihar who have gone to Tamil Nadu to work as labourers are being discriminated against on linguistic grounds. They are being assaulted and asked to return to Bihar. Not only this but Biharis are also being killed and kidnapped. The Tamil Nadu government is hiding even the corpse. For this reason, there is panic among migrant labourers. The murder of a young man from Jamui in Tamil Nadu is known to all.”

According to reports, Ved Prakash added, “Due to the lack of jobs in Tamil Nadu, Tamil people target Hindi-speaking people working there. They misbehave with them. They beat up, which is wrong. We talk about unity and integrity. But in our own country, this kind of behaviour raises many questions. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin is responsible for this.”

Ved Prakash further said, “Regarding this, we have also submitted an application to the Chief Minister and the Union Minister and sought justice. I also appeal to the Hon’ble Court to take this matter seriously and take appropriate legal action so that migrant laborers are not mistreated in their own country in this way and they need not panic.”

It is notable that Pappu Yadav has been vocal about the alleged violence against the Bihari workers in Tamil Nadu right from the beginning. On 7th March 2023, Jan Adhikar Party president and former MP Pappu Yadav shared a video from his Twitter handle in which a Bihari worker shared the details of the violent incidents which allegedly occurred in Tamil Nadu against the Bihari workers. Pappu Yadav has accused the Bihar state government of booking journalists to suppress the case.

However, the Tamil Nadu government and the police are denying claims of alleged violence against workers from Hindi-speaking areas. The Tamil Nadu police have also registered FIRs against media houses and politicians for sharing reports about attacks on the migrant workers in the state.
