‘Transwoman’ Sachu Samson alias Shefina sentenced to seven-year rigorous imprisonment for sexually assaulting a minor boy in Kerala

0

A transwoman identified as Sachu Samson alias Shefina has been sentenced to seven years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 25,000 fine for sexually assaulting a 16-year-old minor boy in 2016.

A single bench comprising Justice Aaj Sudarsan, acting as the Special Judge of the Fast Track Special Court (POCSO), sentenced the transwoman under Section 377 (unnatural offense) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), Section 3(d) and Section 4 (Punishment for forcing oral sex on a minor) of the POCSO Act.

Notably, Samson was male by birth but identified as a woman during the trial. In case Samson fails to pay Rs 25,000 as a fine, the imprisonment will increase for one more year.

During the trial, the court noted that Section 377 was only interpreted to decriminalize consensual homosexual activity among adults. As the victim was a minor, the judgment of the Navtej Singh Johar vs Union of India of 2018 did not apply to the case.

As per reports, the incident took place on February 23, 2016. Samson met the victim on a train while traveling from Chirayinkeezhu to Thiruvananthapuram. The victim was taken to the public washroom in Thambanoor and sexually assaulted. When the victim refused to accompany Samson, he was threatened.

Later, the victim’s mother read some messages and learned about the assault. She talked to the victim, and details came out. The police worked with the victim’s mother and the accused’s mother to set a trap for Samson in Thambanoor, where the transwoman was arrested.

In the defense, Samson’s advocate claimed that Samson had always been transgender. They also presented a medical certificate as evidence of Gender Affirmative Medical Intervention. In his statement, the victim stated that the accused was actually a man at the time of the crime, but she looked like a woman during the trial.

In its judgment, the court stated that the accused was a man in 2016. Later, he got his gender changed. In 2016, he had oral sex with the child, who is a male. The court said, “Because of this, section 377 of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with ‘unnatural offenses,’ will be used instead of section 376 (Punishment for rape).”

Haryana: 45 cows poisoned to death in Gaushala by a gang of ‘Christian convert’ carcass lifters, 4 arrested

0

The Karnal police in Haryana have arrested four persons in connection with the death of 45 cows under suspicious circumstances at a gaushala maintained by the Karnal Municipal Corporation in Phoosgargh village. The incident took place on the intervening night of January 26 and 27, 2023.

The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) of Karnal police probing the case, has now revealed that the bovines had died of poisoning.

The accused had reportedly fed Celphos-laced jaggery to the cows. The accused, who had a contract to lift the carcasses of dead cows from the gaushala, had hatched a plan to kill the cows to earn money by selling the skin and bones of the 45 bovines.

Celphos (trade name for aluminium phosphide) is one the most common and lethal poisons with no antidote available till now. The fatal dose is around 0.5 g and acute poisoning with these compounds may be directly due to ingestion of the salts or indirectly from the accidental inhalation of phosphine generated during their approved use. AlP poisoning is common in all parts of the world. It is often implicated in accidental and suicidal poisonings in India.

The police said that the accused have been identified as Vishal Kumar of Kurukshetra, Rajat Kumar of Karnal city, Suraj Kumar of Karnal and Sonu of Ambala Cantt. As per a report in Dainik Bhaskar, all the accused are Christian converts who used to lift the carcasses of dead animals and sell their hides and bones.

The report in Bhaskar says that the accused were habitual offenders who have been killing cows on a regular basis. However, they used to kill 4-5 animals at a time so as not to arouse suspicion. On that night, they killed 45 cows together so the matter got highlighted.

Inspector Mohan Lal, in charge of the CIA, stated that the accused, with the assistance of another accused Suresh Kumar of Deha Basti, Shahbad, conspired to poison the cows.

The inspector said that the accused have been booked under the relevant Sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The four arrested accused will be produced in court on Monday. The police will seek their remand for further questioning. Suresh, meanwhile, is still at large and police teams are working to arrest him.

In a similar case that occurred last year in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha, dozens of cows reportedly died after consuming fodder that was poison-laced. As per reports, in a Gaushala in Amroha’s Santhalpur, dozens of cows suddenly fell ill after they were fed the fodder that was purchased from one Tahir in the village on August 3.

ByteDance, TikTok’s owner and Meta, Facebook’s parent company to compete in virtual reality segment

0

ByteDance, the China-based owner of TikTok, is starting to snare market share in the virtual-reality headset space that Meta Platforms has identified as critical to its future, The Wall Street Journal has reported.

Two years ago, ByteDance bought Pico, a Chinese startup that makes VR headsets. This acquisition, according to WSJ, launched a new front in the Chinese company’s competition with Meta, whose Instagram and Facebook services have been battling for users and advertising dollars against TikTok as the short-video app soared in popularity. Pico’s headset shipments have since jumped, turning it into a small but fast-rising No. 2 to Meta in the global market, according to industry data accessed by WSJ, even though Pico doesn’t sell its consumer headsets in the US.

Mark Zuckerberg in 2021 renamed Facebook to Meta in part to reflect his bet on the metaverse, a more immersive version of the internet to be experienced largely through virtual-reality headsets.

The company has been spending heavily on that concept, according to WSJ. In its latest quarterly results, Meta said there were more than 200 apps on its VR devices that have generated over USD 1 million each in sales, although total revenue in Meta’s Reality Labs segment was down 17 per cent in the quarter due to lower Quest 2 headset sales.

Meta held 90 per cent of the market share about a year ago, according to research firm International Data Corp. By the third quarter of 2022–the latest period for which data is available–its market share had dropped to about 75 per cent. Market share for Pico more than tripled over the same period to about 15 per cent. No other VR headset maker held more than 3 per cent of the market.

Meta’s headset shipments in the third quarter declined 48 per cent from a year earlier, IDC’s data shows. ByteDance’s Pico was the only headset maker to increase shipments, in a market that was estimated to be worth USD 4 billion as of 2022, WSJ said.
“We’re glad consumers have more ways to experience VR, because when they do, it helps fuel the ecosystem, which in turn encourages developers to create more great content,” a spokeswoman for Meta said. ByteDance declined to comment for this article.

ByteDance’s inroads in the virtual-reality headset market come at a tricky political time for the company. The Beijing-based business is in the crosshairs of officials and politicians who have voiced concerns the Chinese government could use TikTok data to spy on Americans, WSJ said, adding that TikTok’s app has been banned on federal-government devices, while some Biden administration officials want to try to force TikTok to be sold to a US company.

Pico offers headsets for personal use in Europe and Asia, markets that have been more open to devices from Chinese companies than the US Consumers in those markets have gravitated to Pico partly in response to a USD 100 price increase Meta introduced to Quest last year, said Jitesh Ubrani, research manager at IDC. After the increase, Meta’s Quest 2 costs USD 399. Pico’s main consumer headset retails for roughly the equivalent of USD 450. Pico also has been available in some markets abroad where Meta’s device hasn’t in the past, he told WSJ.

Bollywood actor Rakhi Sawant’s husband Adil Durrani has landed in another problem after an FIR was filed against him in Mysuru on Monday after an Iranian student accused him of rape.

Rakhi Sawant’s husband Adil Durrani has been accused of raping, cheating, threatening, and blackmailing a female student who came to Mysuru from Iran to study, the police said. A case has been registered at the VV Puram police station of Mysuru, they said.

Adil Durrani was acquainted with a student from Iran who had come to Mysuru to study Doctor of Pharmacy for the past 5 years.
According to police, Adil Durrani allegedly raped her after promising to marry her.

Believing that they would get married, the Iranian student developed physical contact with him in one of the apartments in VV Puram, the FIR said.

Recently, Adil Durrani refused to marry the student for the last 5 months.

Aggrieved by this, the student has filed a complaint at the VV Puram police station of Mysuru. She also accused him of blackmailing her that he would share photos of their private moments on social media.

After the complaint filed by Rakhi Sawant, this is the second case that Adil Durrani would have to face.

Durrani was arrested after Rakhi filed an FIR against him, alleging he mishandled her funds. Rakhi also accused him of engaging in domestic violence.

Rakhi also claimed that Adil had broken up with her and was living with his alleged girlfriend.

Rakhi further stated that she will opt for a divorce as he cheated on her. While Adil had initially called it false, he finally admitted that he and Rakhi had been married.

The Police filed the FIR under IPC Sections 406, 420 498 (A), and 377.

Rakhi, last month, revealed that she had married Adil in 2022. Taking to Instagram, she shared a photograph of their purported marriage certificate which shows that the wedding took place on May 29, 2022.

350-year-old Shree Saptakoteshwar Temple in Goa: once destroyed by Bahamanis and Portuguese, now renovated with govt efforts

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Goa government on renovating the historic Shree Saptakoteshwar Temple. Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant inaugurated the renovated temple on February 11. The temple was constructed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj over 300 years ago at Narve Village in the district of North Goa, around 35 KMs away from the capital Panaji.

In a tweet, PM Modi said, “The renovated Shree Saptakoteshwar Devasthan, Narve, Bicholim will deepen the connection of our youth with our spiritual traditions. It will also further boost tourism in Goa.”

The temple was inaugurated in the presence of a descendant of Shivaji Maharaj and MLA from Satara, Maharashtra, Shivendra Raje Bhosle. The state Archives and Archaeology Department has carried out the renovation work of the temple.

Home Miniter Amit Shah also congratulated the Pramod Sawant government. He said, “Congratulations to the Goa government on the reopening of the historic Shree Saptakoteshwar Temple after renovation. After being attacked by multiple invaders, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj rebuilt the temple. As a major pilgrimage site, it will draw tourists from all over India.”

In a tweet, Dr Pramod Sawant, Chief Minister of Goa, said, “The renovated Shree Saptakoteshwar Devasthan, Narve, Bicholim will deepen the connection of our youth with our spiritual traditions. It will also further boost tourism in Goa.”

He spoke about the temple’s history: “A divine celebration of the auspicious occasion of the inauguration of Shri Saptakoteshwar Temple on its restoration.”

He added, “The temple will be dedicated to the people after the performance of due religious rituals and in the presence of descendants of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.” Notably, the temple was originally located at Naroa, Diwar, Tiswadi. The history of the temples goes back to Kadamba Dynasty. Bahmani rulers in the 1300s first destroyed it. CM Sawant said, “Shri Saptakoteshwar is the ‘Raj Daivat’ of Goa. The history of the temple, originally situated at Naroa, Diwar, Tiswadi, goes back to Kadamba Dynasty rule. It was desecrated by Bahamani rulers, rebuilt during Vijayanagara rule. It was again destructed by Portuguese rule in 1540.”

He added, “Fearing the destruction, the temple was shifted to Narve, Bicholim, at its present location. The Present temple was built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 1668. His successful campaigns put a check on Portuguese brutalities and religious conversions in Goa.”

Speaking about the art form used during the renovation of the temple, he said, “The renovation of the temple is done under Goa Archives and Archeology department. During the renovation, the ‘Kaavi’ art form of wall decoration is being executed to revive the art.”

During the event, Dr Sawant said, “Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Sambhaji Maharaj have contributed immensely to the protection of Hindu temples and religion in Goa during the Portuguese rule.” He added that several temples were destroyed by the Portuguese, and the Government of Goa has decided to reconstruct them. As it will not be possible to construct all the demolished temples, “In the memory of all the temples which were destroyed during the Portuguese rule, the state government will construct a huge temple at Diwar Island where the Saptakoteshwar temple originally existed before it was shifted to Narve,” he added.

Speaking about the need to present Goa’s real history before the current general, the CM added that a research chair in the name of Shivaji Maharaj had been set up at Goa University. The government is also planning to repair and reconstruct the forts constructed by Shivaji Maharaj in the state, including the one located in the village Betul of South Goa district.

Pakistan: 12 persons arrested after brutal mob lynching of a man in Nankana Sahib over allegations of ‘blasphemy’

0

Twelve suspects involved in the mob lynching of a man at the Nankana Sahib police station in Pakistan’s Punjab province have been arrested, reported The News International city local police.

The arrests were made on Sunday after an initial investigation was launched by the local police. Several videos had surfaced on Pakistan’s social media purportedly showing a man beaten to death by a mob over alleged blasphemy.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif after taking notice of the incident has mentioned that action will be taken against the police officials who have failed their duties.

The Punjab Province Inspector General of Police Usman Anwar suspended two senior policemen for failing to prevent the mob lynching incident in Nankana Sahib the report said.

The News International report quotes an official statement by the local police which said that Nankana Sahib Circle Deputy Superintendent of Police Nawaz Waraq and Warburton Station House Officer Feroz Bhatti were suspended by Anwar after the incident.

For further investigations on the case IGP Anwar has appointed Internal Accountability Branch Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Syed Muhammad Amin Bukhari and Special Branch DIG Raja Faisal to submit a detailed report from the location.

Police officials said the victim, identified as Muhammad Waris, had been taken into custody for allegedly desecrating the Quran. They said news of the alleged crime outraged residents and hundreds of them later surrounded the police station, demanding Waris be handed over to them.

Seeing the massive violent crowd, police officers fled the facility. Protesters grabbed the man and dragged him out to the street where they beat him to death.

International rights groups have long criticised Pakistani authorities for not doing enough to stem lynchings over accusations of blasphemy, which have been frequent in the Muslim-majority country. Blasphemy is also a crime under Pakistani law, which can carry the death sentence.

There have been several cases of vigilante action by mobs against people accused of blasphemy including the murder of a Sri Lankan national, a garment factory manager, in 2021.

Six men were sentenced to death for lynching the Sri Lankan garment factory manager in a mass trial that involved some 89 suspects after the matter sparked national and global outrage.

Pakistan Ulema Council (PUC) Chairman Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi has condemned the incident, saying killing and burning someone accused of blasphemy was a cruel act.

“Inhuman torture and killing the person, accused of blaspheming the Holy Quran in #Nankana Sahib and attacking at the police station is regrettable and condemnable,” he wrote on Twitter.

Kotak Mahindra Bank withdraws ad campaign featuring controversial AIB comedian Tanmay Bhat after backlash

On February 12, Kotak Mahindra Bank’s digital banking handle Kotak811 withdrew the campaign featuring controversial former AIB comedian Tanmay Bhat after it received a backlash on social media. In a tweet, Kotak811 said, “We at Kotak Mahindra Bank Ltd. do not support or endorse the views of actors made in their personal capacity that harm or offend any individual or group. We have withdrawn the campaign.” The ad campaign also featured comedian Samay Raina.

Kotak811 launched the campaign on January 30. Considering Tanmay’s controversial history, the netizens did not take the idea of taking him for the drive. Kotak811 and Kotak Mahindra Bank’s Chairman and Managing Director, Udit Kotak, were called out on social media for using him for the campaign.

Ironically, in the ad, Samay was seen holding a placard saying “No offensive Jokes Tanmay Bhai” with a cancel sign on “No”.

SS from the now-deleted ad.

Actress Kangana Ranaut, who recently got back on Twitter after her account got reinstated, condemned the choice and spoke about the problem of child porn. She said, “Problem with most right-wing ideologists is that they perceive leftists’ choices as their mistakes, please understand Tanmay has been chosen as a brand match for precisely what you are objecting to, child porn is a huge industry, what democrats doing in USA leftists all across.”

She added, “Entire world’s leftists will reflect that, most brands have made it evident what they stand for, latest Balenciaga child porn campaign and shocking rise in child mastectomy in the USA is every right winger’s hell, the question is not what are they doing, the question is what are we doing? Child porn was one of the primary reasons why @elonmusk took over Twitter, this is how right-wingers need to make things happen even at the cost of their own personal/financial good/profit, we need strategies /actions if the system doesn’t support us we need to make it happen individually.”

Cyber Safety Expert and founder of Akancha Against Harassment Akancha Srivastava said, “@udaykotak Sir @KotakBankLtd seriously, you couldn’t find anyone else for your brand endorsement except him?? Are we to understand that he reflects your brand values? He’s been accused of sexual harassment by so many women. Definitely expected better from you.”

Twitter user Monica Verma said, “Hi @KotakBankLtd @udaykotak I am a customer of your bank but the fact that you have hired a Hinduphobic, woman and child abuser Tanmay Bhat for a campaign is making me consider closing my account. Discontinue the association with him and apologise?”

Author Shefali Vaidya said, “Seriously, how can you hire this creepy sociopath and possibly, a closet paedophile Tanmay Bhatt @udaykotak? Is this what you want your bank’s image to be?”

The controversy around Tanmay Bhat and AIB

Bhat, who was a founding member of the controversial comedian group All India Bakchod (AIB), has been in the limelight for the wrong reasons on several occasions. Tanmay Bhat has a history of making derogatory and problematic tweets. He not only insulted legendary singer Late Lata Mangeshkar at one point but also made casual jokes about child sexual exploitation.

His group AIB was infamous for making controversial jokes, and it was closed down after one of its members was accused of sexual harassment. Notably, the other members, including Bhat, were aware of the accusations before they were made public, but they decided not to act strictly upon them.

In a tweet in May 2012, he asked a Twitter user, “How do you know children don’t love rape?”

In another tweet, he said, “Feel really weird every time I see naked baby pics of girls. In my head, I go, “Ha ha! I saw your boobs! Ha ha!”

People missed Samay’s joke on abortion

Amid the controversy around Tanmay, it appears people have completely forgotten about the controversial tweet Samay made about abortion, which is still live on the social media platform.

“I tweeted a joke about my girlfriend a day before yesterday after thinking for 30 minutes. She did not like it and made me delete it. Tomorrow, if I ask her to get an abortion, then she should not say my body is my choice,” he wrote.

Leicester violence, propaganda against PM Modi and dual face of BBC: Pt Satish Sharma explains why British Hindus are saying ‘enough is enough’

The Indian diaspora in the United Kingdom recently staged a protest against state-sponsored British Broadcaster BBC over the propaganda documentary on Gujarat Riots 2002, where they blamed then-Chief Minister Narendra Modi for inaction and killing of Muslims in the riots. Several misleading aspects of the documentary were discussed in our reports here. The Government of India banned the documentary over the misleading nature of the content.

In a reaction to the disinformation BBC attempted to spread through its 2-episode documentary, the NRIs came out on roads in large numbers and staged protests in multiple cities including outside the media house’s headquarters. This was arguably the first time NRIs, especially the Hindus, came out in such large numbers.

OpIndia had a detailed discussion with Pt Satish K Sharma about the reaction NRIs had to BBC’s documentary and tries to assert what led to such a reaction.

The two faces of the BBC

It needs to be understood that BBC has two faces when it comes to discussing Hindus. One of the faces is to show the Hindu community’s activities whenever they are harmless to the status quo. If you go through the reports on BBC related to Hindu festivals, they will show colourful Diwali celebrations, Holi celebrations and so on. It adds the much-needed “colour” to the multicultural British story. Notably, in this case, it is adding to the British story instead of the Hindu story. Such articles give a positive note to the multicultural nature of the United Kingdom. There are a lot of articles where the BBC happily celebrates the harmless and colourful contribution Hindus made to the UK.

Coming to the other face, where they have difficulty, traditionally, in showing anything good about Bharat and Hindus particularly. This is a strategic move. It is almost like being in conversation with a schizophrenic person. Whenever anything has a Hindu dimension, BCC strategically and consistently portrays the Indian story as being negative and detrimental in the worst possible light.

A similar dichotomy is apparent when we talk about the Hindu philosophy, the Darshan and everything else. For example, let’s look at the BBC’s website. They will show the same old story and portray the same old image that Sanatan Dharma has a hereditary hierarchical endogamous caste structure and that it is religious. It is part of the Hindu tradition.

Interestingly, it has been proven with evidence that it is entirely incorrect. Many of the NRI Hindus have provided the correct information to BBC and tried to work with the British broadcaster but could not get them to change a single webpage in their favour. This is how reluctant BBC has been to listen to the Hindu voice. In short, it has been a continuous portrayal of almost a gaslighting and manipulative relationship. If we look at the history of BBC with Hindus, there have been times when there was affection, but most of the time, there is abuse and manipulation.

It is essential to understand that there is a background to such behaviour, especially since 2014, as another dimension has crept into it, and it has to do with the Muslim community. Regarding reporting on the Muslim community, it is notable that they appeared to have a discriminatory policy. It is softened, ameliorated, and diminished whenever there is anything negative to do with the Muslim community.

On the other hand, when something can be portrayed about the Hindu community, it is amplified, proliferated and emphasised. For example, if a Hindu priest is engaged in it, the reputation of all Hindus and Indians is tarnished. They will use the word such as Indian. They will use words such as Hindu and so on. On the contrary, when it is about Muslim abusers, say a Maulvi abused a young white English girl, it is reported as being an Asian.

Identity politics and labels protect the Muslim community and diminish anything negative about them. On the other hand, identity labels are used to highlight, specify and pick on in detail anything to do with the Hindu community.

The anger built up over time

The reaction did not come all of a sudden. The anger and dismay against BBC built up over time. There have been campaigns against the BBC that were on the public’s notice and were covered in the news as well. However, none had feet on the ground or in the streets. In the past, there have been a lot of letter-writing campaigns and complaints filed against BBC. For example, when BBC published a map of Bharat without Kashmir, the media house faced criticism from the NRI Hindus.

Another example that can be recalled was when farmer protests were being enacted on the streets of New Delhi; BBC was very actively involved in making it a Hindu-Sikh affair. They emphasised the religious dimension of it. NRI Hindus objected to the narrative, but these objections normally take the form of people complaining through their complaints procedure. The way different aspects of discrimination creep into BBC’s way of working, it affected NRI Hindus steadily over the years since 2014.

It must be pointed out that most Hindus living in the UK consider it their Karambhoomi and see Bharat as their Janambhoomi. They try and fulfil their obligations to both. But when it comes to the point where your identity is being attacked, and your Janambhoomi is being attacked, that means that the rights you thought you had in your Karambhoomi are not real.

How BBC’s Leicester reporting sparked anger in NRI Hindus

NRI Hindus noticed that BBC’s reporting of Prime Minister Modi, especially the Gujarat Riots documentary, was full of lies. Similarly, the Leicester violence reported by BBC was equally false. They tried to project the word “Hindutva” as if it was something negative. In reality, there was nothing linked to RSS, BJP of so-called Right Wing extremists or fascist orientation to the violence at all. However, they chose to present it that way.

The Hindus living in the UK were still processing it, and the way BBC reported it was still fresh in their minds. The BBC documentary stirred the calm-looking surface of the anger that was building up underneath.

Speaking about the investigation into the Leicester violence, Pt Satish said it is taking longer to investigate the matter. Notably, around 120 arrests have been made so far, and a few weeks back, the police also sought help from the public in identifying some of the accused of the violence. Interestingly, the Muslim community complained about it and categorised it as an attempt to make it a “Muslim Affair” and trying to target the Muslim community.

The violence has caused a great deal of discomfort. It has made them aware of some realities many were ready to believe. The Hindu community had actually felt that if there was violence directed against them and it was criminal, the police would be happy to step in and defend and protect the rights of the Hebrew community.

The first reason was NRIs thought as they think of themselves as British citizens, so they are entitled to those rights. Secondly, because they are good law-abiding British citizens, if anybody is entitled to protections, they are entitled to them more than perhaps other communities who are not so law-abiding. This was the unspoken understanding. But Leicester showed everybody that this was not reality.

The Hindu community has now started to adjust their view of the Britain that they live in. They are now trying to fit into reality, and it is an uncomfortable adjustment. In a nutshell, Leicester played a vital role in making NRIs come to the streets to protest against BBC over the documentary. Notably, BBC was one of the most prominent culprits in spreading fake narratives. They gave a platform to those who were clearly anti-India and anti-Hindu. It was completely biased in its Leicester reporting and then equally biased with the documentary on Prime Minister.

Pt Satish said, “Until Leicester, British Hindus ascribed the BBCs bias to VPCC, ‘vestigial post-colonial condescension’, an unconscious bias a relic of ‘past glories when white supremacists enslaved millions of Indians, but that view of the BBC, changed with Leicester. Here the BBC provided media protection for hatred-infused criminals and painted Hindu victims as perpetrators of violence. Now with the recent anti-India, anti ‘elected, democratic BJP Government ‘mockumentary”, most British Hindus accept that the BBC is not ‘whiter than white’, that it has sold its soul to breaking India forces, and now acts against their well-being as citizens.”

Maharashtra: Nanded police thrash youths for stopping vehicles carrying smuggled cows, and let go the smugglers, accused cop suspended after outrage

0

In a shocking incident in Nanded in Maharashtra, police thrashed several youths for attempting to stop cow smuggling. A video of the incident has gone viral on Twitter, causing massive outrage against the police. The accused cop has been suspended more than a week after the incident, after outrage on social media.

On 11 February, Legal Rights Observatory posted a clip of the incident, where Islapur Police’s API Raghunath Shewale is seen beating four youths half-naked with a strap. Reportedly, the youths are VHP and Bajrang Dal members, and they were mercilessly thrashed by the cop because they had caught two vehicles carrying smuggled cattle.

According to LRO, the Nanded Police let 8 smugglers run with the trucks carrying the cows, and instead arrested the Hindu activist youths.

The incident took place on Thursday, February 2, when the cow protectors of Islampur Bajrang Dal informed Senior Superintendent of Police and Assistant Police Inspector of Islampur Police Station, Raghunath Shewale, about the two vehicles carrying smuggled cattle meant for slaughter. However, as the police didn’t arrive in time, the cow vigilantes stopped the vehicle themselves.

After some time, Raghunath Shewale reached the spot, and he was told that the activists have already lodged a complaint regarding the smuggling. But despite that, he let the smugglers go without taking any action.

The VHP and Bajrang Dal complained about this to senior police officials. Angry at this, Raghunath Shewale called the activist youths to the Islapur police station on February 5, accusing them of being involved in a fight the day before in Shivni village. When they reached the police station, he removed their shirts and started beating them with a belt in front of large crowd. The incident was recorded by an onlooker.

When the video started to appear on social media, the cop found the youth who recorded the video and got him to delete it. The youth deleted it from his phone and fled from the town fearing police action. However, the video still went viral as many others had downloaded it and they started sharing it. However, no action was taken by the police in the matter.

After the video appeared, Vishwa Hindu Parishad official Kiran Bichewar wrote to the Home Minister, Superintendent of Police, and Director General of Police, seeking action against Islapur Assistant Police Inspector Raghunath Shewale.

Following the complaint and after the video went viral at the national level, Nanded Police responded to it today. In a statement, the police said that after seeing the video where a cop is seeing thrashing half-naked youths, Nanded SP Krishna Kokate has ordered a preliminary inquiry to verify the truth of the incident. In the meanwhile, Raghunath Shewale has been transferred to Police Control Room, Nanded.

SP Srikrishna Kokate told NDTV that after receiving the complaint, API Raghunath Shewale has been removed from the police station and sent to the control room and the matter is under investigation.

Following this, LRO alleged that only transferring the cop shows that the entire hierarchy of Nanded Police has links with cow smugglers. Many people said that this light action shows that the police are involved with the smugglers.

After this caused a massive outrage, on the fact that the cop has not been suspend despite the presence of video evidence, the police made amends, and suspended API Raghunath Shewale today. However, no action has been taken against PSI Bodhgire who was equally involved, according to LRO. The legal activist group said that they will move for EOW and CID inquiry to unearth Police- smuggler nexus.

A statement issued by Nanded Police says that Raghunath Tulshidas Shewale is posted at Islapur, and two Mahindra pick-up vehicles were found on Shivni Road with two smuggled bulls in one vehicle and one bull in the other. However, he didn’t arrest the smugglers.

Moreover, no legal action was taken regarding the incident of beating, and no satisfactory answer was given on the act of beating some youths with a belt. Thus, it was a gross negligence in the discharge of duty, the statement said.

Accordingly, according to the provisions of the Maharashtra Police (Punishment and Appeal) Rules, 1956, Raghunath Tulshidas Shewale has been suspended from his post. However, his transfer to the control room will remain effective, and he will have to report at the Headquarters every day in the morning and evening.

Turkey detains building contractors as the death toll from earthquake crosses 33,000

0

As the death toll from the deadly earthquake that hit parts of Turkey and Syria continues to rise, Turkish authorities have targeted over 130 building contractors who were involved in ‘shoddy and illegal’ construction methods. The death toll from the earthquakes that measured 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale has now crossed 33,000. Over 90,000 are reportedly injured as the rescue efforts continue.

In total, Turkish officials have detained or issued arrest warrants for 131 people allegedly involved in the construction of buildings that toppled down and crushed their occupants. Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay provided this information late on Saturday.

On Sunday, February 12, Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said that these people were under investigation for their alleged responsibility in the construction of buildings that failed to withstand the earthquakes. Prosecutors have already started collecting samples from these collapsed building sites to examine the quality of construction material that was used.

Turkey’s construction codes meet current earthquake-engineering standards on paper, but they are very rarely enforced. The evidence of poor implementation of rules was seen as several buildings totally collapsed following the earthquake.

Even though the quakes were very powerful, people across Turkey are blaming the building practices for converting it into a massive tragedy as several buildings collapsed after the tremors.

Earlier, Turkey’s Justice Ministry announced the plan to establish “Earthquake Crimes Investigation” bureaus. The bureaus would aim to identify contractors and others responsible for building works, gather evidence, instruct experts including architects, geologists, and engineers, and check building permits and occupation permits.

Contractors are not the only ones being blamed by Turkish people in the wake of the tragedy. Several Turks are unhappy with the government’s response to the tragedy and the slow pace of the rescue efforts. In response, President Erdogan arrested his critics and even imposed temporary restrictions on the social media platform Twitter.
