Ashwin’s 5-wicket haul, Jadeja’s all-round show power India to a massive win in the first BGT Test against Australia

0

A fiery five-wicket haul by Ravichandran Ashwin combined with all-round brilliance of Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel helped India clinch a massive win by innings and 132 runs within the first three days of the first Test of Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia at Nagpur, after the visitors were bundled out for just 91 runs before the end of the second session on Saturday. With this, India has a 1-0 lead in the four-match series.

In the second innings, Australia was once again off to a tricky start in their bid to overcome a lead of 223 runs by India. Ravichandran Ashwin started Aussie’s downfall by dismissing Usman Khawaja for just five runs off nine balls. Australia was 7/1. Marnus Labuschagne was the next man on the crease and he continued his good form, slamming three great boundaries. However, Ravindra Jadeja’s golden arm did the trick again and he trapped the world’s number one Test batter lbw for 17 off 28 balls. Australia was 26/2.

Ashwin was breathing fire with the ball. He went on to dismiss David Warner (10) and Matt Renshaw (2) in quick succession. Australia was slowly choking under the pressure built by spinners and sunk to 42/4, with a mountain of runs still left to climb.

A boundary by Smith helped Australia cross 50-run mark in 16.2 overs. Ashwin got his fourth wicket of the match and he sent back Handscomb in the fourth lbw dismissal of the inning. Australia was in a huge spot of bother at 52/5, trailing by 167 runs.

Despite trying, there was not stopping Ashwin. Australia’s downward spiral seemed endless and went one step further after Ashwin trapped Alex Carey for 10. Aussies were reduced to 64/6.

Jadeja and Axar joined Ashwin and the trio was running riot on Aussies. Jadeja picked up Cummins (1) while Axar dismissed Todd Murphy (2). Australia was 75/8 and trailed by 148 runs and just two wickets away from an embarrassing third-day defeat.

Pacer Mohammed Shami’s made pace bowling’s first entry in the wicket-taking charts for the inning. He dismantled Nathan Lyon’s stumps for 8 runs. Australia was left struggling at 88/9, trailing by 135 runs. The Aussies were just one wicket away from a loss.

Shami hit Australia with one final blow, dismissing Scott Boland for a duck. Australia was all out for just 91 runs in 32.3 overs. They lost the match by an innings and 132 runs. Smith was left stranded at 25 runs.

Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers for hosts, taking 5/37 in 12 overs. Jadeja also took 2/34 while Shami got figures of 2/13. Axar also took a wicket for six runs in three overs.

A brilliant 84-run knock by all-rounder Axar Patel and an entertaining cameo by Mohammed Shami put India in a commanding position, with a lead of 223 runs at lunch on the day three of the first Test against Australia at Nagpur on Saturday.

India started the day at 321/7, with Ravindra Jadeja (66*) and Axar Patel (52*) at the crease. The hosts had added barely seven runs to their previous day’s total when debutant Todd Murphy struck gold for Aussies, rattling Jadeja’s off stump. The all-rounder was gone for a well-made 70 off 185 balls. India was 328/8.

Mohammed Shami was next up at the crease. Shami put a price on his wicket and played some fine strokes, including a four and a six. Axar continued to guard his wicket as well. India crossed the 350-run mark in the 128th over of their innings. The duo took India’s lead beyond 180 runs.

Shami continued entertaining fans, smashing Murphy for two sixes in the 131st over, which also brought up the fifty-run stand for the ninth wicket. However, the debutant had the last laugh in his next over as he dismissed him for a well-made 37 off 47 balls with two fours and three six. With this, Murphy bagged his seventh wicket in the inning.

India was 380/9 in 132.4 overs and led by 203 runs. Mohammed Siraj was the last man to arrive at the crease for India. Cummins dismissed Axar Patel for a well-made 84 off 174 balls, consisting of 10 fours and a six. India was out for 400 runs and had a lead of 223 runs heading into lunch.

Murphy had a dream spell on his debut, taking 7 wickets for 124 runs in 47 overs. Cummins got two for 78 runs in 20.3 overs. Spinner Nathan Lyon could only get one scalp for 126 runs in 49 overs.

Earlier electing to bat first, Australia was bundled out for 177 runs in their first innings. Aussies were no match for Indian spinners as Labuschagne (49), Smith (37), Carey (36) and Handscomb (31) were the only ones who could score something decent and resist the Indian spin web. Jadeja took a five-wicket haul, ending with figures of 5/47. Ashwin got three scalps while Siraj and Shami took one wicket each.

India came out to bat and top-order, except skipper Rohit Sharma failed again. KL (20) continued his frustrating show with the bat and was dismissed by debutant Murphy. Nightwatchman Ashwin scored a handy knock of 23. Pujara fell for just seven while attempting a sweep. Virat also continued his worrisome string of low scores in Tests, falling victim to spin once again. Murphy got the crucial wicket of Virat.

Debutants Suryakumar Yadav (8) and KS Bharat (8) could not touch double digits. Rohit however, kept the other end steady and scored 120 off 212 balls with 15 fours and two sixes. On a tough surface which was nightmarish for the batters, the Indian skipper put on a batting masterclass. India was reduced to 240/7 after Rohit and Bharat’s dismissals.

Jadeja and Axar then took the baton and guided India to a dominant position at the end of day two, ending at 321/7 on the second day. It gave India a 144-run lead. They kept Australia toiling hard for a wicket, made them chase the cherry all over the park and reached their respective fifties.

Brief Scores: India: 400 in 139.3 overs (Rohit Sharma 120, Axar Patel 84*, Todd Murphy 7/124) defeated Australia: 177 and 91 (Steve Smith 25, Marnus Labuschagne 17, Ravichandran Ashwin 5/37) by an innings and 132 runs.

Kerala: Literacy worker commits suicide after Pinarayi Vijayan government does not pay salary for over 6 months

0

On Thursday, February 9, ES Bijumon, a saksharata prerak (literacy worker) of the Kerala State Literacy Mission Authority committed suicide due to the inordinate delay in the disbursement of his salary. The Block-level literacy prerak, who had been felicitated with a President’s award for best literacy prerak, was amongst the 1,714 literacy preraks in Kerala who have been denied salaries for the last six months due to the state government’s ‘financial crisis.’

According to reports, Bijumon has been a member of the Kerala Sakshartha Prerak Association for over 20 years. For the past 82 days, the organization’s preraks (literacy workers) have been protesting outside the Secretariat, over non-payment of salaries.

Bijumon was also among the workers who were protesting against the state government, which has reportedly not been paying these workers their dues for the last 6 months, citing a financial crisis.

Speaking about the tragedy, the State Saksharata Prerak Association State Secretary AA Santhosh told the media that workers were on an indefinite strike for the last 82 days. “The workers have been working for the department since 2009. In 2017, they were transferred from the public education department to the local self-government department. Since then, their salaries have been reduced, and they are not getting regular salaries either,” he said.

According to Santhosh, the preraks are now requesting Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to intervene and resolve their problem. “The state government also issued an order in this regard for utilizing the services of preraks in the local body department, but it could not be implemented as the finance department and local body department had different opinions. Now we are demanding the intervention from the Chief Minister,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Kerala Saksharatha Preraks Association District Secretary Sheerja said that the deceased Bijimon used to say that if someone gets “martyred”, only then will they get justice. “He was in a serious financial crisis, and is survived by two sisters and an old mother,” said Sheerja.

Sheerja further said that a block-level nodal officer with the literacy mission is entitled to get Rs 15,000 a month. However, often this amount would vary depending upon the number of enrolments in various literacy programs. Often, even a block-level officer would get only less than Rs 10,000.

The Indian Express quoted the deceased’s mother Vijayamma as saying, “After the death of his father, he was looking after me and my daughters. We were surviving on his meager income. Several times during the last six months, we did not have money to even buy basic provisions.”

Pinarayi Vijayan govt considered deferring salaries of govt employees due to financial crisis

Notably, in May last year, OpIndia reported how the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Communist government in Kerala, faced its worst economic crisis as the state had no funds to provide salaries to its employees. As there were not enough funds, the Kerala government had reportedly considered setting aside almost 10 percent of salaries for that month.

Union govt had paused funds over miscalculation of its previous borrowings

The union government had delayed giving Kerala permission to borrow more money considering there were issues in the financial statements of previous years. The CAG had said that borrowings of the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board (KIIFB) and the Public Service Undertakings should also be accounted for in the government’s balance sheet. However, the Kerala government opposed such a move. The union government had also sought an explanation on the utilization of the additional loan permitted during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Reportedly, the girl on Wednesday, February 8, was continuously crying and fell asleep however, she did not wake up after that. Khushboo, the elder sister of the deceased girl has accused a person in the case who has earlier accused her father Gopal Yadav, and his tenant Raju Bansal of molesting his daughter. Khushboo claimed that one day when the accused had an argument with her father, he called the CM Helpline and filed a case against Gopal Yadav at Vijay Nagar police station.

Following this, there was a tense atmosphere in their house, consequently, terrified by the incidents happening, Kajal reportedly slipped into depression and stopped eating food also. The deceased’s father was also staying away from the house for a month.

On Friday, Kajal’s family reached Vijay Nagar police station with her dead body and bier. They filed a case against the person who they accused of coercing them to convert to Christianity and demanded his arrest. Town Inspector (TI) Ravindra Gurjar counseled them and requested them to perform the last rites first.

‘We are Yadavs and will not leave our Sanatan Dharma’

Gopal Yadav resides in the Vijay Nagar locality of Solanki Nagar along with his three daughters and a son. On Wednesday, his daughter Kajal Yadav died on Friday, February 10. Kajal’s family have alleged that a person residing in front of their house was pressurising them to convert to Christianity and also offered to help them with jobs and other things. Khushboo said that despite the pressure, we did not leave our Sanatan Dharma as we belong to the Yadav family.

‘He used to throw eggs and interrupt Pooja at our home’

Khushboo added that it is due to this that she was stopped and harassed by the accused often when she used to step out of her home. She went on to claim that whenever there used to be a Pooja at their home, the accused would play speeches related to Christianity at a very loud volume. The accused allegedly hurled eggs and meat at Gopal Yadav’s house.

The dead body of the deceased girl has been sent for postmortem and the police are investigating the matter.

Criminal case filed against Telugu superstar Rana Daggubati and father Suresh Babu in land dispute case: Here is what happened

Telugu superstar Rana Daggubati has landed in legal trouble as a case has been filed against him and his father in a land dispute case. According to reports, a businessman named Pramod Kumar filed the case against Rana Daggubati and his father Suresh Babu at Hyderabad’s Nampally court, alleging that they used goons to evict him from a plot which is under dispute. The case involves a prime property in the Film Nagar in Hyderabad.

The court summoned the duo after Pramod Kumar approached the court against the Bahubali fame actor and his producer father accusing them of threatening him to vacate the land that he had leased from the actor’s father in Hyderabad’s film nagar area. The court has asked them to appear in court on May 1 for a hearing of the case.

According to the reports, the concerned plot at Filmnagar Road No. 1 in Sheikpet Mandal Survey was purchased by Suresh Babu from film actress Madhavi. The plot is located next to another plot owned by superstar Venkatesh, Suresh Babu’s younger brother. Suresh Babu’s family leased the plot to Pramod Kumar in 2014 for setting up a hotel.

The lease expired in 2018, and after that, Suresh Babu’s family agreed to sell the plot to Pramod Kumar for ₹18 crore. Pramod Kumar paid ₹5 crore as the first instalment of the payment, and a sale deed was executed.

While the paperwork for the deal was being done, the landowners allegedly found a different buyer who was willing to pay a higher price for the prime property. Due to this, they returned the ₹5 crore taken from Pramod Kumar. They also asked him to vacate the plot, as it will be sold to a different buyer.

Pramod Kumar refused to vacate and moved court against Rana Daggubati and his father alleging that they didn’t transfer the plot to him even after taking ₹5 crore in advance and signing a sale deed. In the meanwhile, the landowners also filed a different case against Kumar, for not vacating the plot even after the expiry of the land.

Apart from these two cases, there are three more cases regarding the plot pending in courts. Due to multiple litigations on the plot, the court had ordered a status quo, and therefore Pramod Kumar is still occupying the plot.

According to Pramod Kumar, on November 1, some goons arrived at the place and chased away the security guards. They threatened him to vacate the plot, he alleged. Pramod Kumar claimed that Rana Daggubati, his father Suresh Babu and some others used goons to get him forcibly vacate the land.

Reportedly, Promod Kumar had first approached the Banjara Hills police station with a complaint against the father-son duo, but the police refused to file a complaint against them. After that, he approached the Nampally court against the actor and his father.

Pramod Kumar alleged in his complaint to the Banjara Hills police station that he was thrashed by a gang of goons who threatened to take the land in Film Nagar. Suresh Babu and Rana Daggubati, he alleged, were behind the attack. Kumar is also claiming ownership of the plot.

The Nampally court promptly registered a criminal case against Rana Daggubati, Suresh Babu, and others involved in the matter. The judge then issued summons to them and directed them to attend court on May 1.

A similar case was earlier filed by a different businessman named Nanda Kumar, who owns a famous restaurant chain, in December 2018 against Venkatesh, Rana and Suresh in the city civil court. He had also alleged while signing a lease and sale deed with him, the family tried to sell the land to someone else who offered more money. Nanda Kumar had also claimed that the family had further tried to forcibly evict him from the property.

In 2021, Tollywood actor Rana Daggubati was also summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection to four-year-old money laundering and drugs trafficking case. The case was registered by the Telangana Excise and Prohibition Department.

Rana was one of 12 Tollywood celebrities summoned by the ED in connection with the 2017 drug scandal. ED had requested that the actor explain his banking transactions.

Local BJP leader Sagar Sahu shot dead at his home by Naxals in Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh

0

In Narayanpur, Chhattisgarh, BJP district vice president Sagar Sahu (47) was killed at his home in Chhote Dongar village, by Naxals, at around 8 p.m., on Friday. Two Naxalites reached Sahu’s home on a bike, knocked on his door, and fired two rounds from an AK-47 as soon as the door was opened. Following the encounter, both Maoists rode away into the jungle. The neighbours arrived at the scene after hearing screams of Sahu’s wife and kids, and called the police to report the crime.

Sahu was still alive after the gunshots, according to the locals. He was rushed to the Chhote Dongar hospital. Here, the doctor immediately referred him to Narayanpur District Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead by the doctors.

Narayanpur District Hospital Civil Surgeon Vinod Bhoyar said, “When Sagar Sahu was brought to the hospital, he was in a dead state. The bullet pierced from the right side of the neck and came out from the left side of the head. These were gunshot wounds.”

Sahu’s wife and kids were also at home when the incident happened. Sahu was watching TV in his lobby when the two anonymous individuals showed up at his house. One of them was carrying a gun. When Sahu opened the door, they pushed their way inside, and the one with the gun fired two shots at him. The bullets hit him in his head and he fell on the couch.

His wife and kids ran to the hallway when they heard gunfire. They observed two individuals fleeing on the bike while holding the assault rifle. When Sahu’s family saw him lying on the couch, covered in blood, they began to scream which alerted the neighbours about the crime. The entire incident took place in less than 5 minutes.

A police station is located approximately a kilometre from Sahu’s house. Jawans from Chhote Dongar police station arrived at his home following the shooting. Two bullet casings were found at the scene. After examining the casings, the police believe an AK-47 was used to commit the crime.

Speaking to media persons, Pushkar Sharma, Narayanpur Superintendent of Police (SP) said, “Two people came on a bike, entered Sagar Sahu’s residence, and opened fire on him. He was admitted to Narayanpur District Hospital, where he died during treatment. No such information about the victim being threatened by Naxalites was received recently.”

According to Narayanpur Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Hemsagar Sidar, a small action team of Naxalites is suspected of carrying out the murder based on the results of the initial inquiry. The case is still being investigated.

Sagar Sahu held the position of district vice president of the BJP in addition to working as a contractor. He used to accept contracts to construct private residences nearby. However, Naxalites had previously threatened him due to his affiliation with the political party. Sahu’s wife and kids are terrified as a result of the tragedy. They are currently staying at the house of a BJP leader in Narayanpur.

This is not the first attack on local BJP leaders in the state. On February 5, Neelkanth Kakkem, the head of the Usoor Block (Bijapur District) of the BJP Mandal, was dragged from his house and mercilessly hacked to death by axes and knives in front of his family by Maoists.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief Mahmood Madani says ‘India is the first homeland of Muslims’: Why his statement can be dangerous for Hindus and Bharat

On Friday, Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief Mahmood Madani stated that India is the first homeland of Muslims and that believing that the religion of Islam has come from outside here, is wrong and baseless. “Islam is the oldest religion among all religions. India is the best country for Hindi Muslims,” he said while addressing the crowd at the 34th General Session held at the Ram Lila ground in New Delhi.

He also said that the speciality of India for Muslims lies in being the land of the first Paigambar named Abul Bashar Sayyed Adam. “This is his land. This is the birthplace of Muslims. This is Muslim’s first land. Saying that Islam is a religion that came from outside is totally wrong and baseless. Islam is the oldest religion among all religions. India is the best country for Hindi Muslims,” he said. In his statement, Madani also said, “This land (India) is the legitimate progeny of Islam”.

Meanwhile Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind chief also said that Islam is the oldest religion of all four religions in the country. “India is our country. As much as this country belongs to Narendra Modi and Mohan Bhagwat, equally, this country belongs to Mahmood. Neither Mahmood is one inch ahead of them nor they are one inch ahead of Mahmood,” Madani stated.

According to Madani, several organizations in the country are allegedly engaging in spreading ‘hate speech’ against Muslims. He alleged that the government despite knowing about such incidents and events is taking no action. The Jamaat Ulema-e-Hind chief demanded that such people and such organizations who spread ‘hate’ against the minority community should be severely punished and that a stringent law should be introduced against ‘hate spreaders’.

It is entirely possible that Madani made these statements to give credence to the “Hindus and Muslims have the same DNA” theory and had perfectly good intentions while making these statements, however, his statement also has extremely dangerous connotations. One must remember that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. From the statement by Madani, there are a few operative parts that become evident:

  1. India is the progeny of Islam, therefore, Bharat was born out of Islam.
  2. The first Prophet of Islam came to India first.
  3. That India is the land for Islam
  4. That Islam is the oldest religion, older than any other religion including Hinduism

Given how Islamist supremacy functions, the statement of Madani can be used to prove that Islam has the first right on the civilisational land of Bharat, which is the home of Sanatan Dharma. His statement would also legitimise the ‘Dar ul Islam’ concept, which, literally translated means ‘House of Peace’ – essentially, a nation where Islam is supreme. Islamists have usually espoused that India is “Dar Ul Harb” which needs to be turned into “Dar ul Islam”. With Madani saying that India itself is the progeny of Islam and that Islam is older than other religions of the land, the statement reinforces Islam’s right on India and their “right” to turn India into Dar ul Islam.

What is also dangerous is the fact that in his statement, he refers to India being the land of Abul Bashar Sayyed Adam – the first Prophet who is considered to be the ‘father of humanity’. This, coupled with his statement about India being the progeny of Islam, has severely dangerous connotations for Hindus and Bharat.

Madani reiterated that Abul Bashar Sayyed Adam was the first Prophet and that India is believed to be his first land. It is important to note here that Muslims all over the world believe that Abul Bashar Sayyed Adam is the father of human mankind. They believe that God formed Adam by using the materials of earth, sand, and dust and gave him a small part of his heart to come alive.

Muslims further believe that God created Eve, a woman from materials of air, and imparted them with the knowledge of following and preaching Islam. “Islam,” they say, “is nothing but Submission to God.” According to an Islamic report, it also means peace and so Muslims believe that preaching Islam implies the peace that we can be attained by submitting to God.

The mention of Adam is also made in the religious Islamic texts which describe the ‘father of humankind’ as the one chosen by Allah to begin the prophethood on this Earth. Reports mention that the Nine Surahs of the Quran include 25 mentions of the name Adam. Adam has been referred to in Islamic Hadiths as Abul Bashar (the father of humanity), Khalifatullah (God’s representative or vicegerent), and Safi Allah (the one chosen by God).

Verse 4 of Surah At-Tin in the Quran mentions that Allah has created man in his best possible capabilities and that humans are the only ones after whose creation God has praised Himself. “All blessings belong to God, the best Creator,” Verse 14 of Surah Al-Muminun adds.

As Madani on Friday said that Islam is the oldest religion of all the four religions in India, he indicated that Adam was the first to appear on this land (in India according to Madani) and that he was the first to begin the chain of humanity – in India. Madani’s statement can also be used to suggest that all the people belonging to all the other religions are also children of Adam, ultimately the children of Islam.

There are several mentions of Adam in the Hadith as well which say that Adam was created out of the different colours of mud which signifies people with different skin colours and different mentalities. The Islamic texts further state that God sent Adam to the Biblical Garden of Eden or Garden of God, also known as Terrestrial Paradise when he was hungry and there he created Eve out of the material of air. God then forbade the duo to taste the fruit of immortality and condemned them to ‘live and die’.

The Garden of Eden has been mentioned in the Quran as Al-Jannah, which is the commonly used word for paradise in Islam. The book named ‘Islamic Theory of Evolution: The Missing Link Between Darwin and the Origin of Species’ written by TO Shanavas states that Muslims in the Quran are told that the Garden of Eden was paradise itself and that it was located on the Earth. However, it is for Muslims not to be concerned with the exact location of the garden.

However, if Genesis which is the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament is to be believed, the last proposed location of the Garden of Eden was somewhere near Iraq, Iran, and Saudi Arabia and certainly not India.

West Bengal: Suvendu Adhikari lashes out at Alipurduar DM and SP for being hands in gloves with TMC

On Friday (February 11), BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari lashed out at the Alipurduar District Magistrate Surendra Kumar Meena and Superintendent of Police (SP) Y Raghuvanshi for allegedly facilitating the defection of BJP MLA Suman Kanjilal to the Trinamool Congress (TMC).

“The DM of Alipurduar, Surendra Meena, is the original district President of the Trinamool Congress. I know everything about his involvement in sand mining, and smuggling of sandalwood and stones. He had brought Mamata Banerjee here and conducted a public meeting,” Suvendu was heard saying.

He further emphasised, “SP Y Raghuvanshi, let me tell you that you are new here. Stay alert. I have documents showing how many times you called him (Suman Kanjilal). I also have CCTV footage of the DM meeting Suman.”

“I take full responsibility when I say this…that I have all the facts and documents about what DM Surendra Kumar Meena and the SP have done in the past one month,” Suvendu Adhikari pointed out.

“If 20,000 people can gather and gherao Surendra Meena, the way in which the TMC is using official positions to threaten democracy will end and the coming panchayat election will be the people’s vote,” he warned.

The BJP leader lashed out at ‘rebel’ Alipurduar MLA Suman Kanjilal, who recently joined hands with the Trinamool Congress. Given that the defection of a single MLA to the rival camp will lead to disqualification under the anti-defection law [pdf], Kanjilal has been hideous about his new political affiliation.

“If you have the power, then, acknowledge in public that you are a member of the Trinamool Congress. Why don’t you quit the Vidhan Sabha and BJP’s primary membership,” he told Kanjilal.

“If you have the guts, then, openly announce in a public rally that you have relinquished your ties with the BJP and joined hands with the TMC…People voted for Narendra Modi. If a booth President is made to contest against you, then, he may secure more votes than you,” Adhikari lashed out.

It must be mentioned that Suman Kanjilal defected to the TMC on February 5 this year. He had earlier tweeted, “Are you scared of the 10th Schedule of the Indian Constitution (anti-defection law)? Not handing over TMC flag?”

“Because, inside Vidhan Sabha, as in the case of Mukul Roy, TMC Owner labelled him as BJP; Suman Kanjilal would also claim that he belongs to the BJP Legislative Party,” he added.

Suvendu Adhikari also vowed to recover the money that gullible people were allegedly forced to pay to Mamata Banerjee and her nephew Abhishek, via agents, in exchange for government jobs.

“I had two goals after joining BJP. One was to defeat Mamata Banerjee in elections, which I already achieved. The other one was to turn her into a former Chief Minister of the State. This is my target,” he announced during his rally in Alipurduwar.

Delhi liquor scam: Raghav Magunta, son of YSR Congress MP, arrested by Enforcement Directorate

0

Raghav Magunta, the son of Ongole MP Magunta Sreenivasulu Reddy, a member of the YSR Congress Party, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate as part of a money laundering probe linked to the Delhi liquor scam, investigators said on Saturday.

According to the reports, Raghav Magunta was arrested on Friday night under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). He is expected to appear before a regional court where the federal investigation agency will seek his custody. The ED has made nine arrests in this case, with three of them coming this week.

The agency arrested Rajesh Joshi, the director of an advertising firm named Chariot Productions Media Pvt Ltd, and Gautam Malhotra, the son of former SAD MLA from Punjab, Deep Malhotra, earlier this week.

The father and son duo were allegedly members of the “South Group,” a cartel of alcohol dealers, distributors, and producers that was established as part of the now-scrapped Delhi excise regime.

Last year, ED searched locations linked to the Lok Sabha MP Magunta in this case. The ED has so far filed two charge sheets against the defendants in this case. The money laundering investigation began with a CBI FIR.

Manish Sisodia, the deputy chief minister of Delhi, and several government excise officers are also under the scanner in the Delhi liquor scam.
