Delhi: Meat thrown at Kanwar Yatris in Delhi’s Seelampur, police initiate probe after protests, video viral

On Wednesday, scores of pilgrims participating in the Kanwar yatra staged a protest in the Muslim-dominated Seelampur area in Delhi after they discovered that a piece of meat was thrown at one of the Kanwars making the holy Ganga water impure. The Kanwariyas slammed the Kejriwal government and blocked the roads in Delhi for an hour or so.

According to the reports, the Kanwariyas, hailing from Alwar, Rajasthan are on a 14-day of Kanwar Yatra in which they fetch the holy Ganga water from Haridwar for the Shiv temple in Alwar. The Kanwariya had walked continuously for seven days and had reached Seelampur on July 19 which is a Muslim-dominated area. The Kanwariyas had set up a camp near the Seelampur Metro station parking. The Yatra was interrupted after the Kanwars on their way back to Alwar discovered that some unidentified person had thrown a piece of meat at the Kanwar outside the camp.

The Kanwariyas staged a protest and raised slogans against the Delhi government and Police authorities and alleged that someone deliberately had thrown the meat at the yatra. They stated that the incident had hurt the religious sentiments of the Hindus. The outrage escalated so much that the traffic in Delhi was disrupted for about an hour.

After some time, the Delhi police reached the spot and tried to pacify the matter. According to the reports, the police did not find any piece of meat near the camp and they claimed that some dog might have dragged the piece of meat near the camp. However, one of the Kanwariya speaking to OpIndia said that the incident was deliberate.

“We were passing through Seelampur area with Kanwar when a fellow Kanwariya changed the Kanwar from one shoulder to the other and suddenly the piece of meat stuck in the decoration of his Kanwar fell on the road. Although, he cannot say with certainty who threw it and when, but before we entered the Muslim-majority area of Seelampur, all was well and people were welcoming us. But we did not see the same in Delhi”, he said.

The Police meanwhile have assured to conduct a thorough investigation in the case and are busy scanning the CCTV footage to ascertain the claims. The Police have also assured us that the accused will soon be nabbed. Considering the Kanwar was deemed inauspicious because of the attack, the Police also arranged for a car to transport the Kanwariyas back to Haridwar to get holy water.

The Kanwariyas will fetch the holy water again and will reach Seelampur with the help of the Police. The Kanwariyas have to travel by foot for the next 6 days to reach Alwar in Rajasthan by the evening of July 25.

‘We cannot say he will not tweet again’: Says Supreme Court while granting bail to Alt News cofounder Mohammed Zubair

On July 20, Supreme Court granted bail to Mohammed Zubair, co-founder of Alt News, in all cases filed in different Police Stations in Uttar Pradesh. The Court also directed to club all FIRs registered with Delhi Police and UP Police, saying that they have offences of cognate nature. The investigation will be handled by one investigation authority, the Court added.

During the hearing of the matter related to multiple FIRs registered against Zubair, Advocate Vrinda Grover stated that Zubair had gotten bail in a case related to FIR registered by Delhi Police. Patiala House Courts had granted bail to Zubair in that matter. Calling him a journalist and a fact-checker, Grover alleged her client was being harassed by the system.

She further informed the Court that during the investigation, the Police added Section 35 of FCRA and Section 67 of the IT Act in the FIR and increased the scope of the investigation. She further said the Court that the investigating agencies are probing seven different tweets posted by Zubair over the time that allegedly hurt the sentiments of the complainants. One of such tweets was against Baba Bajrang Muni, whom Zubair had called ‘hate monger’ while publishing a tweet about the news channel debate that sparked a major controversy that led to the suspension of BJP’s former spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

Gover further claimed that there was no incitement in his tweets. She mentioned the FIR by a Sudarshan TV reporter about the tweet by Zubair where he had allegedly used a graphic created by Sudershan TV. She alleged that FIRs were being used to silence her client.

“Tweets may be different, but the tone of FIR and injury caused in all FIRs are the same. This is using criminal law machinery to harass and silence me,” she added. Grover also claimed there was a threat to Zubair’s life, and a bounty was allegedly announced against him.

UP AAG pointed out his tweets were distributed as pamphlets

Additional Advocate General (AAG) for the State of Uttar Pradesh informed the Court how his provocative tweets were used to instigate Islamists after Friday prayers. She said, “Subsequent to the TV debate on May 26, 2022, on June 5th and 6th, he has shown that the people from all over the world are supporting them why aren’t you coming forward to protest. These tweets were circulated as PAMPHLETS after Friday prayers.”

AAG mentioned that whenever he tweeted something provocative, he received additional funding via donations. She said, “The accused is not a journalist. He calls himself a fact checker. Instead of fact-checking, he posts tweets which are getting viral and spread venom and propagating people. He has been paid for these tweets and he gets paid more for the malicious tweets.”

She added, “He has admitted that he has received 2 crores for such tweets. 12 lakhs is his quota. the state is conscious that here is a person who instead of informing the police, he takes advantage of videos, speeches etc which can create a communal divide.”

AAG added that Zubair understands the importance of tweets. She said, “There were tweets of June 6 which said why are people not protesting. his tweets were circulated as pamphlets, and soon after, the people came out of prayers, and there was heavy violence.”

She said, “Accused from such violent scenes have admitted that they were given the pamphlets with tweets of Zubair printed. The State wants to ensure that there is no communal disharmony. it is not about general tweets, and there is general action.”

AAG further informed the Court that the SIT formed in the matter after looking at the gravity of the situation, and there was no conscious viciousness against the petitioner. She added, “State only wants to maintain communal harmony in the State of UP and nothing else. He is just increasing his followers through such tweets. He must be remanded to competent courts.”

AAG also mentioned the case of Loni, Ghaziabad, where an old man was beaten over personal enmity. However, the likes of Zubair gave it a communal angle. She said, “Please see what happened in Ghaziabad, Loni. this was the video of an old man who was taveez maker and that he was beaten up, he reported it in this manner, the incident happened on June 5, 2021, and nothing happens till FIR is lodged against unknown persons.”

She added, “He takes advantage of this video, tweets it to his lakhs of followers. then he writes all this to inflame the passions of people all over the country. then communal tension arises in Loni, Ghaziabad. It is found that on June 14 he tweeted and on June 15 police called him.” She pointed out that Zubair issued a written apology on June 28 last year in that matter.

SC granted bail in all cases filed in UP

In its order, the bench led by Justice DY Chandrachud detailed the FIRs registered against him under different sections in Delhi and several Police Stations of UP. The Court said the procurements of gadgets, documents, PAN cards, donation details and other relevant documents have already taken place.

The Court further added that even though he was granted bail in two of the multiple FIRs registered against him, he was “embroiled in a series of proceedings in UP”. The Court further added that it did not find any reason for Zubair’s deprivation of liberty to persist further. The Court directed his release on bail on each of the FIRs in UP.

The Court clarified that it had not quashed the FIRs but clubbed them as the offences were of the same nature. The Court transferred all the cases to Delhi Police, and its special cell will investigate further. The SIT formed by the UP government stood disbanded.

The Court ordered the release of Zubair on a bail bond of Rs 20,000 and directed the authorities to release him by 6 PM.

AAG argued that there must be restrictions on him from tweeting anything inciting.

However, the Court did not pass any orders restraining Zubair from tweeting anything derogatory or provocative stating the court cannot stop a “journalist from tweeting”. AAG again informed the court that he was not a journalist.

The Court said, “We cannot stop him from tweeting. We cannot anticipatorily interdict him from exercising his right to free speech. He will be answerable as per the law.” Before the mic was muted, Justice Chandrachud was heard saying, “we cannot say that he will not tweet again.” The court said he would be liable if he posts anything derogatory or inciting again.

SC grants bail to Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair in all six cases registered against him in UP

The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday granted bail to Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair in all the six cases filed against him across Uttar Pradesh.

“There is no justification to keep the petitioner in continued detention especially since the gravamen of allegations in UP FIRs is similar to that in Delhi police FIR,” Justice DY Chandrachud noted while granting bail relief in all the cases filed against Zubair.

With respect to the quashing of the FIRs against Zubair, Justice Chandrachud said that the Delhi police FIR has offences of cognate nature which is similar to the UP police FIRs and therefore, it would be needed to club together all FIRs and hand them over to one investigating authority.

Last week, Mohammed Zubair filed a petition with the Supreme Court requesting that six FIRs filed against him in Uttar Pradesh be dismissed. The plea filed by him challenges the FIRs recorded in Lakhimpur Kheri, Sitapur, Muzaffarnagar, Ghaziabad, and two in Hathras. The petition also challenges the formation of the SIT by the Uttar Pradesh Police.

Zubair was arrested by Delhi Police last month over a complaint filed by a social media user over his old tweets where he had insulted Hindu Gods and Goddesses. He was arrested under Section 153 which deals with wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riots and 295A of the Indian Penal Code which entails deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.

‘Provocative tweets by Mohammed Zubair were circulated as pamphlets after Friday prayers’: AAG for UP govt in Supreme Court

The Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday argued in the Supreme Court that inflammatory tweets posted by Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair days after the news debate on May 26 were distributed as pamphlets after Friday prayers.

“Subsequent to the TV debate on May 26, 2022, on June 5th and 6th he has shown that the people from all over the world are supporting then why aren’t you coming forward to protest. These tweets were circulated as PAMPHLETS after Friday prayers,” said Garima Parshad, the Additional Advocate General (AAG) for the State of Uttar Pradesh in the Supreme Court of India.

Violence erupts in India after Mohammed Zubair dog whistles against Nupur Sharma

The controversy erupted after Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair shared a truncated video of Nupur Sharma’s comments on the Times Now debate and accused her of making derogatory remarks against the Islamic Prophet.

Before long, the controversy gained epic proportions and transcended national boundaries as Zubair and his ideological compatriots incessantly tagged influential Arab Twitter handled and sought their reaction on the matter. As the controversy swelled, the Arab countries made unsolicited comments over the matter, causing a diplomatic nightmare for India’s mission in the Persian Gulf.

Back in India, Islamists took to the streets, running riot and indulging in vandalism, and arson against what they perceived as an insult to Prophet Muhammad. Protest marches calling for the beheading of Nupur Sharma were carried out as participants shouted “sar tan se Juda” chants against Nupur Sharma. Violence swept across Uttar Pradesh and other parts of the country as a direct result of Mohammed Zubair’s dog-whistling against ex-BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma over her comments on Prophet Muhammad during a news debate on Times Now that was aired on May 26.

In one instance, her effigy was left hanging from a cable, reminding Hindus of the fate that awaits them should they dare cite authentic and reliable Islamic Hadiths to comment on Prophet Muhammad.

The violence witnessed over the controversy was particularly stark on June 3 and June 10, both Fridays, as Islamists, after offering prayers, took to the streets, going on a rampage and threatening the former BJP leader with beheading threats.

Alt News co-founder arrested for hurting religious sentiments, over 6 FIRs filed against him

Zubair is currently in jail in connection with half a dozen FIR filed against him under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for his defamatory comments against Hindu seers, hurting religious sentiments by sharing disparaging posts against Hindu Gods, and making critical remarks against News anchors among other things.

Sri Lanka: Prime Minister and acting president Ranil Wickremesinghe elected as the new president

Ranil Wickremesinghe, the current Prime Minister and acting president of Sri Lanka, will lead the island nation through 2024. On Wednesday, 20th July 2022, the Sri Lankan parliament held an election for the president in which Ranil Wickremesinghe emerged as the winning candidate. Wickremesinghe was serving as an acting president after Gotabaya Rajapaksa resigned from the post following recent economic crisis and public outrage causing the government to overturn. Now that Gotabaya Rajapaksa left the country and resigned by email last week, Ranil Wickremesinghe will complete the rest of his tenure.

134 of the 219 votes that were determined to be legitimate went to Ranil Wickremesinghe. Anura Kumara Dissanayaka, the leader of the left-leaning Janatha Vimukti Peramuna party, and Dullas Alahapperuma, a politician from the ruling party, were the other contenders.

A faction of the ruling party, which has 145 seats overall as of the most recent parliamentary election in 2020, supported Wickremesinghe. The other sector as well as the main opposition party, which gained 54 seats the previous time around, supported Alahapperuma.

Ranil Wickremesinghe is a member of parliament from the United National Party (UNP), and has been leading the party since 1994. Before become PM of Sri Lanka in May this year, he had served six terms as the prime minister, 1993 to 1994, 2001 to 2004, 2015 to 2018 and 2018 to 2019.

Meanwhile, Gopal Baglay, the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka, stated that India will support an early and effective economic recovery for Sri Lanka. As a result, India will be investing more to aid the nation in developing the capacities necessary to address the country’s economic issues, said Baglay. It is notable that India has already provided Sri Lanka with an aid of approximately $4 billion.

In the recent protests, Sri Lankan people had asked Ranil Wickremesinghe to step down from the post of Prime Minister. After his election as the new president, widespread demonstrations are anticipated around the nation. 22 million people in Sri Lanka are currently experiencing shortages of basic necessities including food, fuel, and medication due to the economic crisis.

Haryana DSP killed by sand mining mafia in Mewat

It is important to note that this is not the only incident in which the accused killed the police officer. Earlier the day, Haryana DSP Taoru Surendra Singh Bishnoi was run over by my mining mafia and killed in Panchaon near Nuh in the Mewat region of Haryana. As per reports, DSP Bishnoi had gone for a surprise inspection of a site where illegal mining was taking place. However, the mining mafia ran the dumper over him and killed him.

After the murder, 8 police teams were constituted to nab the culprits, including special teams from the neighbouring districts. During their search operation, they ran into one of the accused Iqrar, and it led to an encounter with him.

In the current case, the Ranchi Police has confirmed to have nabbed the unidentified accused. The Police have also seized the vehicle which was reportedly smuggling the animals. Female police officer crushed to death in Ranchi by vehicle smuggling cattle, here is what the media ‘skipped’ in their reports

On July 19, a female Police Officer was crushed to death when she tried to stop a vehicle carrying animals illegally. As per reports, the Tupudana Police Station had got a tip about the vehicle smuggling cattle. When sub-inspector Sandhya Topno attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver mowed her down to death. The vehicle has been seized, and the Police have apprehended the driver. The investigation is underway.

However, while reporting the incident, only a handful of media houses mentioned the content of the vehicle that was being smuggled. Here is how different media houses reported the matter.

A Times Now report on the case did not mention that cattle were being smuggled in the vehicle. In the video, for over four minutes, the anchors and the reporter explaining the case only mentioned “illegal items”. It was only towards the end of the report that one of the anchors asked what the items that vehicle was carrying were, and the reporter opened up about cattle. In the text below the video, there was no mention of the cattle smuggling.

Hindi news outlet Hindustan entirely skipped the details about the cow smuggler mowing down the police officer. The media house detailed what had happened, but there was no mention of cows being smuggled by the vehicle.

Hindustan Times also skipped the details about the cow smuggler and only mentioned that the female officer was mowed down by the vehicle during checking.

DNA called it a routine checking and mentioned the tip about cattle smuggling only while quoting ANI.

In the report of the incident, Mirror Now did not mention anywhere that cattle were being smuggled by the vehicle that ran over the Police Officer.

India TV also quoted ANI to report cattle smuggling but restrained from using it elsewhere, including in the title of the report.

In its report, Aaj Tak did mention that there was a tip-off about a vehicle smuggling cattle. However, the media house skipped mentioning that the vehicle that ran over the officer was, in fact carrying cattle.

The same style of reporting was done by Punjab Kesari, where they did mention cattle smuggling but only towards the end and not in the title or beginning part of the report.

In a report, Republic TV did not mention cow smuggling in the text, although the video that was used in the report talked about cattle smuggling.

Amar Ujala and Free Press Journal have mentioned cattle smugglers prominently in their respective reports.

Financial fraud accused Rana Ayyub spreads lies about Mohammed Zubair’s arrest to paint dystopian picture of press freedom in India

Journalist’ Rana Ayyub, an accused of committing financial fraud to the tune of crores of rupees, recently peddled disinformation on Amanpour and Company by PBS over the arrest of Alt News co-founder Mohammed Zubair by Delhi Police.

Speaking in support of Zubair, who instigated Islamists against former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, triggering widespread unrest and bouts of violence that led to the bloodcurdling beheadings of Kanhaiya Lal and Umesh Kolhe, the donation fraud accused claimed that the Delhi Police arrested the Alt News co-founder for “fact-checking fake news in India.”

“We are living in the times when journalists are enemies of the state in India where the world’s largest democracy is descending into a police state,” said Ayyub while condemning the arrest of Mohammed Zubair, whom she claimed was arrested for busting fake news.

Delhi Police arrests Mohammed Zubair for hurting religious sentiments

However, contrary to what Ayyub would want the world to believe, Delhi Police arrested Mohammed Zubair for hurting religious sentiments after a social media user filed a complaint against the Alt News co-founder after his old tweets insulting Hindu Gods and Goddesses had gone viral on the internet.

Mohammed Zubair, the co-founder of leftist propagandist portal Alt News, has been arrested by the Delhi Police under Section 153, 295 of the Indian Penal Code.

Section 295 deals with deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs while Section 153 concerns wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot.

Mohammed Zubair’s old Hinduphobic posts surface online

On 13 June 2022, days after India witnessed violent protests that saw Islamists running riot, indulging in violence over the alleged insult of Prophet Muhammad, Twitter user The Hawk Eye (@thehawkeye) shared a collage of past tweets and posts by Mohammed Zubair mocking Hindu Gods and beliefs.

In one of the tweets shared by The Hawk Eye, Zubair is seen mocking Shivling and comparing it with the top view of the Vatican City. He said the post comparing Shivling with the Vatican City inspired him to come up with a parody Facebook page ‘Unofficial: Subramanian Swamy’ in 2014.

Apparently, one of the posts on the Facebook page ‘Unofficial Mohammed Zubair‘ mocks Arun Govil to take a swipe at Lord Ram, suggesting that ISRO must consult the actor because he would know more about the rocketry.

Another post by ‘Unofficial Mohammed Zubair’ shows an aeroplane under the water with the caption: “Breaking: Pushpak Vimana under water used by Raavan 5000 years found in the Indian Ocean.”

Besides ridiculing Hindu Gods, Zubair has also poked fun at Hindu beliefs and took a dig at Sanskrit, regarded as one of the most important languages of Hinduism and the means of communication by the Hindu Gods.

As his Hinduphobic posts started getting traction, with netizens sharing screenshots to highlight how Zubair has been moving and hurting the sentiments of Hindus, the AltNews co-founder quietly pulled downhis Facebook page. A few days later, he deleted the controversial tweets as well.

Days later, the Patiala House Court in Delhi granted bail to Alt News Co-Founder and serial fake news peddler Mohammed Zubair and asked to furnish a surety of Rs 50,000.

However, he continues to remain in jail over other cases filed against him. One of the case is related to a complaint filed by a journalist working with Sudarshan News who had, in September 2021, lodged a complaint against the Alt News co-founder at Lakhimpur Kheri for defaming the news channel over its report on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Odisha: Cholera outbreak in Rayagada district’s Kashipur claims 7 lives, around 104 under treatment

In a concerning incident, the Rayagada District Administration on Tuesday informed that the Kashipur block of the district in Odisha has been severely affected by the outbreak of cholera disease. The ailment has spread so much that more than seven people have died and about 104 are being treated in the hospitals in Kashipur, Rayagada.

The Rayagada District Administration said on Twitter that clean drinking water is being supplied to villages affected by Cholera and Diarrhoeain in the Kashipur Block. It also requested the citizens to consume the supplied water only after thorough boiling. “All are requested to please consume only supplied water and refrain from using any other source of water”, the administration added.

Rayagada District Collector Swadha Dev Singh reported that initially, the administration suspected the spread to be diarrhoea. “Later it came to the fore that people might have been infected with cholera also. Some collapsed because they could not get the proper medical attention at the due time”, Singh was quoted.

According to the reports, the administration tested the samples to understand the nature of the outbreak. Three of the nine abdominal swab samples from patients in the area were positive for the Vibrio cholerae bug. The Vibrio cholera bacteria were detected in the faeces of patients diagnosed from Dudukabahal village, one of several blocks’ multiple impacted communities. The bacterium was also discovered in the locals’ drinking water.

Dr Lalmohan Routray, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Rayagada also confirmed that the disease has spread from the contaminated water. Following the spread, the administration has taken several steps to curb the spread of cholera, including the establishment of two temporary medical camps in afflicted regions of the Kashipur block. The medical experts have raced to the region and are going door to door to see if anyone is experiencing any symptoms.

The area has seen multiple instances of cholera outbreak over the years

To note, the tribal-dominated district in southern Odisha has a history of the spread of cholera and other water-borne diseases. Earlier in 2010, a similar severe spread of cholera was found in the same Kashipur area of Odisha. The administration then led by the then Rayagada collector Nitin Jawale had put an end to outbreaks by sanitizing water sources on a massive scale.

According to a government survey, a total of 37 outbreaks of cholera have been reported from 1993 to the year 2015 affecting around 90,773 individuals and causing 275 deaths, approximately 13 per year. Despite significant breakthroughs in epidemiology, diagnosis, and therapy, cholera remains a significant source of morbidity and mortality in Odisha. It mostly affects the population, who have restricted access to safe drinking water and lack proper sanitation.

The matter of the current severe spread of Cholera in the Kashipur block was also addressed in the State Assembly, with Congress Legislature Party leader Narasingha Mishra requesting a reply from Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Makaranda Muduli, MLA of Rayagada, has meanwhile urged a long-term solution to the vexing diarrhoea and cholera problem in Kashipur block, citing the fact that many impoverished people are falling victim to the water-borne disease.

Reports mention that many of the 104 affected individuals are being treated at the Kashipur Community Health Centre, Tikiri Primary Health Centre, Rayagada District Headquarters Hospital, Aditya Birla Medical and Utkal Hospital in Ushapada. One patient is also being treated at Koraput’s SLN Medical College and Hospital. The neighbouring districts of Koraput and Kalahandi have also been put on alert.
