Netflix loses almost a million subscribers in the second quarter, had estimated to loss 2 million

Streaming giant Netflix has continued to loss subscribers, causing a major worry for the company. On Wednesday, the popular video streaming platform revealed it has lost around a million subscribers in the second quarter (April – June) of this year. The company stated that it lost 9,70,000 members in the second quarter, which is higher than the 2,00,000-member drop in the first quarter.

According to reports, in April, the platform had recorded a 2 lakh paid subscriber loss in the first quarter of 2022, its first in almost a decade. After the second quarter reports, Netflix has only 220.67 million subscribers. “Our challenge and opportunity are to accelerate our revenue and membership growth by continuing to improve our product, content, and marketing as we have done for the last 25 years, and to better monetize our big audience,” the firm said in its official statement. The company added that it expects to add one million subscribers in the third quarter.

It added that the second quarter was better than expected in membership growth, and foreign exchange was worse than expected resulting in 9 percent revenue growth. The company said that it had projected a loss of of 2 million subscribers in the second quarter, but it was restricted to one million.

Overall, the company lost 1.3 million subscribers in the U.S. and Canada, the numbers stayed largely unchanged in Latin America, lost about 770,000 in Europe and West Asia, and grew by about 1 million subscribers in the Asia Pacific region including India. Netflix has 73.28 million paid customers in the United States and Canada, and 220.67 million worldwide, with a million more expected in the third quarter. Revenue climbed by 9% year on year, from $7.3 billion in 2021 to $7.97 billion this quarter.

It is notable that to arrest the decline in subscriber base, the company has decided to launch ‘ad-supported’ cheaper subscription plans from next year. The streaming giant stated that the debut of advertising on the service will aid the company in attaining its financial goal and sustaining its position as the industry leader that it pioneered. The company had announced in April that low-priced ad-supported plans will be introduced soon, and the company announced last week that it has roped in Microsoft as its advertising partner.

Microsoft will be in charge of creating and operating the platform for marketers interested in serving advertising to Netflix viewers. The commercials-supported membership will however be in addition to the three existing choices of basic, standard and premium plans, the cheapest of which is $10 a month in the United States.

It is important to mention that the company has been facing severe hardships regarding subscriptions in India as well. The video streaming platform has been struggling to please the Indian market and is worried about slow growth of number of subscriptions from the country. The company has hardly seen profits since its inception in India. On January 20, Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings had expressed his ‘frustration’ during an investor call over the slow growth of the video streaming company in the Indian market.

Considering the super slow growth of the video-based platform in India, Netflix earlier had decided to revamp the entire content of the Indian web series and movies which were to be released shortly. Netflix India had decided to study the taste of the Indian audiences and expand the market accordingly in the future. It had also decided to do away with its serious, dark content and try new ideas with a more commercial approach for the Indian viewers.

The company also partnered with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting and launched the first set of short video series named ‘Azadi Ki Amrit Kahaniya’ bringing out inspiring stories of seven Indian women as a part of the celebration of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav.

“In our experience in Brazil, it was brutal for the first couple of years. We thought we’d never break even. I know we’ve got this great business. The great news is that in every single other major market, we’ve got the flywheel spinning. The thing that frustrates us is why haven’t we been more successful in India”, he had said.

After the second quarter report witnessed the loss of around a million subscribers from all over the world, the company has proposed plans to launch subscription options which would include a showcase of commercials amid the content. Netflix will work with Microsoft to launch a cheaper subscription plan that would include advertisements.

USA: Democrats Ilhan Omar and AOC fake being ‘handcuffed’ over abortion protests, netizens call out their bluff

On July 19 (local time), several members of the US Congress, including Ilhan Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Alma Adams and others, were arrested by Capitol Police outside the Supreme Court building. They were arrested for participating in an abortion rights protest.

Capitol Police had warned the protestors

US Capitol Police made it clear on their Twitter account that it was against the law to block the traffic, and officers were giving standard three warnings before taking any action against the protestors.

In the follow-up Tweet, they mentioned that some of the protestors were refusing to get out of the street. Thus they started making arrests.

As per their Tweets, a total of 35 arrests were made using DC-Code 22-1307 (Crowding, Obstructing or Incommoding. Out of these 35 people, 17 were members of Congress.

Video of AOC’s ‘arrest’ left netizens amused

The office of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) published a video of her ‘arrest’ where she was holding her hands behind her back, appearing as if she had been handcuffed. However, the video left netizens amused as she was apparently only pretending to be handcuffed. In reality, she was only being taken away by the Police officers, and it appeared the way she held her hands on the back was only for the photo-op.

In the 16-second video, AOC was seen being taken away by the Capitol Police. Her hands were at the back, and a Police Officer was holding her from the elbow. This is the standard way how Police take away someone who is handcuffed. However, at the 10-second mark in the video, AOC raised her right hand-closed fist to greet the supporters, possibly out of excitement as they were cheering. Her action made it clear that she was not handcuffed but only pretending.

Twitter user Chris Abraham said, “Extremely abusive. Why do much clothing? It’s 95°F and humid during a sunny DC summer day. AOC fakes being handcuffed after arrest at abortion rights protest.”

Advocate & Philanthropist Adam Milstein said, “Fake it ’til you make it, right AOC? Publicity stunt: US Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez appeared to fake being handcuffed while protesting today at the Supreme court, Cortez raised her right arm and waved to the crowd.”

Netizens lashed out at Omar for appearing only for a few minutes

Ilhan Omar also shared a video where she allegedly pretended to be handcuffed. In the tweet, Omar wrote, “Today I was arrested while participating in a civil disobedience action with my fellow Members of Congress outside the Supreme Court. I will continue to do everything in my power to raise the alarm about the assault on our reproductive rights!” In the video, she was visibly smiling the whole time.

However, towards the end of the video, in the very last second, she also raised her arm to greet the people making it clear that she was not handcuffed. She was called out by netizens for reaching late that too, for a short span of the protest.

Twitter user George said, “*today I was escorted off the premises of the Supreme Court building, because I’m terribly misinformed and I’m misleading Americans, so I faked being in handcuffs for the photo-op. There I fixed it.”

Author and columnist Tim Young wrote, “It’s about 92 degrees in DC today… Ilhan Omar and AOC were basically the only “protesters” out in the heat in long sleeves not breaking a sweat at all… because they literally only showed up for a minute to get a photo op pretending to be arrested.”

Twitter user Caleb Hull said, “Police brutality is so widespread and real that AOC and Ilhan Omar had to fake that they were handcuffed.”

The Abortion Rights Protests

The abortion rights protests have been happening outside the Supreme Court building since a draft of the opinion in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization was leaked to the media. In the final opinion that was released in June, Roe v. Wade ruling was overturned where the High Court had stated that abortion was a constitutional right.

CM Yogi Adityanth issues warning against corrupt officials, advises ministers to not ‘blindly trust’ their staff

Amid the escalating tensions between the state ministers and proposed transfers of the government officers, UP CM Yogi Adityanath on Wednesday advised the state cabinet ministers to stop blindly trusting the officers. “Do not blindly trust your staff”, he said hinting at the allegations of irregularities and corruption in the PWD department of the state government.

This is after the government on July 18 transferred Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Jitin Prasada’s Officer on Special Duty (OSD), Anil Kumar Pandey, and suspended five other officers over the charges of corruption. According to the reports, the five officers including the PWD head and Chief Engineer Manoj Gupta were suspended after the action was taken against Pandey.

Jitin Prasada’s UP PWD department has been beset by charges of corruption in transfer assignments 13 months after the politician took over the department after joining the BJP from the Congress. An investigation showed that OSD, Anil Kumar Pandey, directly accountable for wrongdoings in department transfers was selected by Jitin Prasada.

Considering this, CM Yogi Adityanath in the cabinet meeting on Tuesday advised the state ministers to not trust their officers blindly. He directed the ministers to keep a watch on their department officers and their activities. CM Yogi also issued a warning to the government officers and reiterated that corruption and irregular activities would not be entertained in Uttar Pradesh.

The state of Uttar Pradesh has seen reports of irregularities and incidents of corruption in the transfer of government officers. Last week, over 100 medical professionals from the state had written to the Director General of Medical Health over an alleged error in government doctor’s transfer orders. The errors included the transfer of deceased doctors, transfer in violation of couple posting, and transfer within one year of previous transfer.

Yogi Adityanath’s government in Uttar Pradesh has been strict against corruption and inefficiency that had struck the state for decades. In the year 2018, the Chief Minister sought records of over 100 tainted class I officers, including IAS, IPS, PCS, and PPS officers, whose names had figured in corruption cases at any point in time during their service period. Also, in 2019, the Yogi-led Uttar Pradesh government decided to sack seven Provincial Police Service (PPS) officers on charges of corruption.

Furthering the drive against corruption, the UP government had warned over 400 corrupt officials of severe punishment and decided to give early retirement to around 200 employees. Earlier in 2019, the government had also registered FIR against more than a dozen policemen.

In the current case, two other officers of the PWD department are also accused of impropriety in transfers within the department. OSD Pandey had served Jitin Prasada while he was a Union minister in the UPA government and was brought to Lucknow on deputation. The recent investigation revealed that OSD Anil Kumar Pandey, directly accountable for wrongdoings in department transfers was selected by Jitin Prasada.

However, reports mention that Minister Jitin Prasads is not satisfied with the transfer of OSD Pandey. The Minister met CM Yogi Adityanath on the matter and is expected to meet Home Minister Amit Shah today.

Kerala administration seizes IndiGo bus over ‘tax evasion’ days after the airline put communist leader on no fly list for unruly behaviour

Kerala Motor Vehicle Department has seized one bus of IndiGo airline over allegations of ‘tax evasion’ on Tuesday, hours after the airline put the ruling communist party LDF’s convenor on a ‘no-fly’ list following a scuffle with Youth Congress leader. The state government department has claimed the airline evaded road tax worth Rs 40,000. The bus conducts service at the Karipur Airport and was at the Feroke workshop for repair works.

As per reports, IndiGo owes state department tax dues of past six months. The seized bus will only be released after dues are cleared. The MVD, however, has claimed that this seizing of bus over ‘tax evasion’ has nothing to do with the recent decision of the airline to put the ruling party, LDF’s convenor on a ‘no-fly’ list.

Few weeks back, a scuffle broke out between Left Democratic Front (LDF) leader EP Jayarajan and Kerala Youth Congress workers in an IndiGo flight. The officials claimed that they did not take action earlier because the bus was inside the airport premises. Youth Congress members Naveen Kumar RK and Farsin Majeed PP were found guilty of Level I offence and were banned from flying with IndiGo for a period of 2 weeks. Similarly, EP Jayarajan was found guilty of a Level II offence and was banned from flying with the airline for a period of 3 weeks, starting July 16 this year.

The official further claimed that the bus was not seized but was kept inside the workshop and will be released once dues are cleared along with penalty of Rs 7500.

The Background of the incident

On June 13, 2022, activists of the Kerala Youth Congress boarded a commercial flight flying Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan to Thiruvananthapuram from Kannur and waved black flags at him to protest against police harassment.

The chief minister was at Kannur on a three-day official tour. The Youth Congress workers were nabbed by the CM’s security team and LDF leader Jayarajan, and were handed over to the CISF.

Jayarajan described the incident as worse than a “terrorist strike.” The incident was also criticized by CPI(M) state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, who claimed that Youth Congress workers were plotting to attack the CM.

Meanwhile, Congress leader VD Satheesan described it as a “symbolic protest against police repression.” Farzeen Majid, head of the Youth Congress Mattanur block and one of the protestors, claimed that their objective was just to register a protest.

He alleged that the Youth Congress workers were “brutally beaten” at the airport by the CM’s security team and Jayarajan, thereby inflicting serious injuries on the Youth Congress workers.

They were also charged with a case of an attempt to murder. The Valiyathura police department registered the case under Indian Penal Code Section 307 after receiving a complaint from Chief Minister’s bodyguard Anil Kumar.

According to reports, this incident also prompted attacks on certain Congress offices, including the State Headquarters in Thiruvananthapuram, purportedly by members of the CPI(M) and its youth wing DYFI.

‘I can release video clips to prove physical and verbal abuse’: Tej Pratap claims of problems suffered during marriage, slams media’s ‘biased’ reporting

On July 19, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav’s son Tej Pratap Yadav threatened to release video clips of alleged physical and verbal abuse he and his family suffered after his marriage. He released an over 7-minute long video as a reaction to a report about his divorce case where he was shown in poor light by a news portal.

In the video, Yadav said that despite court orders against publishing any reports on his divorce case, some channels are publishing misleading and fake reports. He said, “Those who want my family to break down are paying these channels to publish such derogatory news. Even I have over 1,000 videos to show how I was abused, how my mother was beaten up, how my parents, sisters and brother were abused.” He further added he had been maintaining silence for the last four years since the divorce petition was filed.

Tej Pratap and Aishwarya Rai got married in 2018. She is the granddaughter of late former chief minister Daroga Prasad Rai. The marriage lasted less than six months, after which a divorce petition was filed in court. The couple was last seen together in a mandatory counselling session around a month ago.

The day Aishwarya left the house, she had alleged to have stayed there to save the marriage. She had stormed out of the house in the presence of journalists and alleged that she was kicked out. Following the brawl between the couple, her father left RJD and joined Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s JD(U). In the 2020 elections, Rai failed to retain his Parsa assemble seat.

Though Yadav’s father-in-law had vowed to avenge what had happened to her daughter before leaving the party, Yadav, instead of blaming him for the alleged misleading reports in public, targeted RSS in his video. He alleged, “the RSS” and “the other side” in his divorce case were conspiring against his family.

He further urged the media to leave the case alone as the court has also restrained journalists from reporting the case proceedings.

ED arrests Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren’s close aide Pankaj Mishra, had earlier seized Rs 11.88 crore from 37 bank accounts belonging to him

The Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday, 19th of July, arrested Pankaj Mishra, a close aide of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren in connection with the money laundering case related to alleged illegal mining in Ranchi. Mishra was arrested following several hours of questioning by the ED officials.

According to reports, Mishra had joined the investigation on his third summons on Tuesday. He had skipped the prior two summons sent to him by the department citing his ill health as the reason.

ED raids 18 locations linked to Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren’s close aide Pankaj Mishra, seizes Rs 11.88 crores cash

On July 8, ED conducted raids at as many as 18 locations in Jharkhand allegedly linked to CM Hemant Soren’s close aide Pankaj Mishra and the latter’s alleged business associates in Sahebganj, Berhait, Rajmahal, and Mirza Chauki.

The agency had reportedly seized cash amounting to Rs 11.88 crore lying in 37 bank accounts belonging to Pankaj Mishra, a close aide of Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, and others in the illegal mining case. According to ED, five illegally operated stone crushers and five illegal gun cartridges were also seized during this search operation.

“With the present seizure, total cash and bank balance of Rs 36.58 Crore illegally generated from mining etc in Jharkhand has been seized,” the agency informed.

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had made a revelation that politicians and bureaucrats have complicity in the illegal mining trade which has been ongoing in Jharkhand and they have minted money by using their clout. The agency had found a trail of more than Rs 100 crores in connection with illegal mining in the state.

The federal agency reported that earlier in May, searches at 36 locations related to the MNREGA scam were carried out under PMLA, leading to the seizure of Rs 19.76 crore in cash. The homes of Pooja Singhal, IAS, and her colleagues were among the places that were searched.

According to the ED, evidence gathered during the investigation in this case also showed that the majority of the money confiscated came from illicit mining and belonged to senior bureaucrats and politicians.

Suman Kumar, a chartered accountant, and Pooja Singhal were both detained in connection with this case and are now being held in judicial custody. A prosecution complaint has been filed in this case.

So far, in total, cash and bank balance of Rs 36.58 crore, illegally generated from mining has been seized by the ED in the case.

NEET exam underwear removal controversy: Exam supervisor dismisses ‘fictitious’ complaint, says was filed with wrong intentions

A day after a group of female examinees, taking the NEET 2022 medical entrance exam in Kerala’s Kollam district, filed a complaint about being forced to remove their innerwear during the frisking procedure at the exam centre, the exam supervisor has dismissed the accusation.

According to reports, the exam centre’s superintendent has told the National Testing Agency that the complaint is “fictitious” and has been filed with “wrong intentions.”

The centre superintendent and the independent observer as well as the city coordinator, Kollam, told the exam conducting body that they “did not find any such incident happening in the centre”. All three have written letters to the NTA where they have denied the incident.

The letter written to NTA by the independent observer stated, “I have not directly observed anything like stripping of undergarments as alleged in the complaint.”

Similarly, the letter shot by the centre superintendent to NTA stated, “I was vigilant in the conduct of all procedures and in my knowledge no bad incident has taken place in the centre on the day of the exam. I think the complaint is fictional and with bad intentions.”

Moreover, the city coordinator in their letter to NTA said, “I was in contact with all 26 centres in Kollam city during the conduct of NEET 2022, No unturned incident happened in any of the centres. The complaint levelled by the parents seems to be with wrong intentions.”

The National Testing Agency (NTA), meanwhile, has also confirmed that no complaint has been filed with them in this regard. “On the receipt of the report, immediate comments of the Centre Superintendent and the Independent Observer as well as the City Coordinator, Kollam district were obtained. All three of them have inter alia, stated that they did not find any such incident happening in the centre. The candidate did take the examination,” said NTA in an official statement.

“No complaint or representation has been received by us. On basis of claims in media reports, an immediate report was sought from the centre superintendent and observer. They have informed that no such incident took place and the complaint is fictitious and has been filed with wrong intentions,” a senior NTA official privy to the case told the media.

Female students forced to remove undergarments at test centre during NEET exam in Kollam, Kerala

Before entering the test centre, they were forced to remove their innerwear at the metal detection stage of the frisking procedure. The incident took place at an exam centre in Kollam. The facility, located in Kerala’s Marthoma Institute of Information Technology in Ayur Chadayamngalam

Students stated that they had to endure psychological trauma just before taking the high-stakes exam. A complaint has been lodged by the parents with the Deputy Superintendent of Police at Kottarakka, Kollam.

Four Muslim youth arrested over namaz inside Lulu Mall: How the usual suspects in media spread fake news to malign Hindus

The Lucknow police on Tuesday arrested four persons for performing Namaz at the newly opened Lulu mall in the state capital, videos of which had gone viral on the internet and sparked a massive controversy. The arrested men were identified as Mohammad Rehan, Aatif Khan, Mohammad Lokman, and Mohammad Noman.

The suspects were arrested under sections 153A(1), 341, 505, and 295A of the Indian Penal Code.

The development came days after social media platforms were awash with videos from Lulu Mall in Lucknow, where a group of men were seen offering namaz. The videos triggered a raging controversy over the use of public places for religious purposes. Several Hindu organisations protested against turning the mall into a place of worship, with many announcing Hanuman Chalisa and Sundar Kand recitals inside the mall.

One such protest by Hindu organisations took place on July 15, three days after Muslim men performed namaz inside the Lulu Mall. However, police arrested three men, ostensibly Hindus, for gathering at the mall entrance and reciting Sundar Kand. Later on Twitter, the Lucknow police shared a press note informing about the arrest.

Usual suspects peddle disinformation maligning Hindus over the Lulu Mall namaz row

However, the usual suspects, forever on the prowl to shield Islamists, quickly pounced on the press note and twisted it to malign Hindus. Citing the Hindus arrested in the case, they weaved a warped narrative that involved painting apprehended Hindus as Muslims and accusing them of defaming the Muslim community by assuming their identity and performing namaz inside the mall.

Arfa Khanum Sherwani, a journalist with the leftist propaganda website The Wire and known for her penchant for spreading fake news, peddled disinformation that ‘Sanghis’ were arrested for offering namaz inside the mall.

Her colleague, Rohini Singh, also joined her in the routine exercise of shielding Islamists. Without sharing evidence to substantiate her claims, Singh took to Twitter to declare that those offering namaz at Lulu Mall in Lucknow were “actors” who wanted to stir social unrest. Singh also pontificated that it does not behove good on the majority that “actors” knew that people would get triggered at the sight of namaz inside the mall.

In less than 24 hours since Singh posted her tweet, the Lucknow police revealed the names of youth arrested for offering namaz in the mall, all of whom turned out to be Muslims. Yet, Singh did not bother to delete her tweet or offer an apology for peddling disinformation on Twitter.

Radio Mirchi’s Sayema, who has often displayed little hesitation in promoting fake news that serves to bolster Islamist propaganda, also shared the misinformation being peddled about the arrest of Hindu men. Sayema quoted Khabeer’s tweet and promoted the misinformation that Hindu men posed as Muslims to offer namaz inside the mall.

Ahmed Khabeer, Editor of the Islamist propaganda portal The Jamia Times, shared a screenshot of a tweet posted by Lucknow Police to allege that Hindus posing as Muslims had offered namaz in the mall.

However, the arrest of four persons involved in namaz inside the Lulu Mall and their identities revealed has served as a body blow to the usual suspects who had desperately tried to implicate Hindus in the matter so as to cover up for the Islamists and their tendency to turn public spaces into places for communal prayers.

The Lulu mall in Lucknow, the largest in Uttar Pradesh, was embroiled in a conspiracy just days after it opened after a video of a few people offering Namaz inside the mall went viral on July 12. In reaction to the incident, the Akhil Bharatiya Hindu Mahasabha announced that a Sundarkand recital will be held within the mall. The Hindu Mahasabha cancelled the Sundarkand recital after the mall’s management apologised for the Namaz incident.

Vegetarian student allegedly served non-veg sandwich in Jamia central canteen, says staff told him ‘no pure veg food available’

An incident has surfaced at the Jamia Millia Islamia University of Delhi, in which a vegetarian student was allegedly served a non-vegetarian sandwich in the varsity’s central canteen. Upon complaining to the canteen staff, the student was shoved aside and told that there is no pure vegetarian food available in the canteen.

The matter was brought up by Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) unit of Jamia Millia Islamia University. The ABVP Jamia unit posted a tweet saying, “Today at the central canteen, a vegetarian student was served a non-veg sandwich instead of a veg sandwich, and when complained, he was told that this is Jamia and no pure non-veg food is offered here.”

Ajay* (name changed on request as complainant fears retribution) said, “While the student who received the Veg sandwich is a strict vegetarian, when he went to complain to the canteen staff after being traumatized by this incident, the staff refused to acknowledge the mistake. Instead, they claimed that chicken pieces could have gone into the sandwich by mistake. Even after calling the canteen’s proprietor repeatedly, he did not show up. The canteen employees even stated that this is the RSS agenda.”

“The other students present there saw that there were chicken pieces within the sandwich. Why is there no separate vegetarian food counter in the central canteen, and how long will vegetarian students be disturbed by this in a University that ranks third in India? Why are proprietors not asked to keep a separate counter for vegetarian food before giving them the contract of the canteen, why to use the same utensils for vegetarian and non-vegetarian food?”, Ajay further asked.

Ajay further requested that the University’s Vice Chancellor should investigate this issue as quickly as possible, cancel the canteen tender, or take appropriate action so that no other vegetarian student endures the same trauma of consuming non-vegetarian food.

This isn’t the first time a purported supernatural creature’s footage has gone viral on the internet. The Pentagon publicly released three unclassified videos recorded by the US Navy in 2020 revealing encounters with ‘unidentified aerial phenomena.’ Many people believe this was proof of the existence of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) or aliens.
