Assam: AIUDF MLA Shamsul Huda thrashes a man for not putting red ribbon and tall banana trees for foundation stone laying event, apologises later

In a public display of hooliganism, Shamsul Huda, the AIUDF MLA from East Bilasipara in Assam, thrashed a man with a banana plant during the foundation stone laying ceremony on Tuesday (18th March). A video of the incident that went viral on social media shows Huda pulling a man, said to be an employee of a contractor, by his collar and slapping him. He even uprooted a banana plant used in the ceremony and beat up the man with it.

As per reports, the MLA was there to lay the foundation stone of a bridge at the Chuapata Daikhowa market. Huda was dissatisfied with the arrangements for the foundation stone laying ceremony. He got angry when he saw the colour of the ribbon and the size of the banana trees. The MLA expected a red ribbon tied to tall banana plants for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The contractor arranged a pink ribbon that was tied to one and a half feet tall banana plants. This would have made him bow down to cut the ribbon. A furious Huda pulled the employee of the contractor standing next to him by the collar and slapped him hard. He did not stop at that. He uprooted one of the two banana plants and started thrashing him and people standing there tried to stop him.

Following the MLA’s outburst, the contractor Avinash Agarwala sought an apology from him for the errors in arrangement.

The MLA’s action drew widespread criticism after which he issued an apology. “Yesterday I was laying the foundation stone of various works in a gram panchayat in my Bilasipara East constituency since morning. Earlier we laid the foundation stone of Rs 11 crore which went well. This unexpected accident happened as it was a big bridge work and I told the contractor to do it a little better,” Huda said explaining the incident.

Apologising for his action, Huda said that it should not have happened but he was compelled to do it. “It was not right for me to do that in public. But the environment forced me. So I apologize to all the people of Assam and our people of Bilasipara for what happened,” Huda said.

The MLA alleged that no bricks or stones were given to break the coconuts at the foundation stone laying ceremony. He said that he had to wait for about half an hour for bricks to break the coconuts.

Qualified women should not seek alimony, laws don’t support idleness: Delhi High Court while rejecting a maintenance plea

In a recent ruling, the Delhi High Court while rejecting a maintenance plea underscored a significant principle: a well-educated wife with suitable job experience should not avoid employment merely to claim maintenance from her husband.

This observation arose during a case where the petitioner, an evidently qualified woman with a master’s degree from Australia and prior professional experience in Dubai, was seeking interim maintenance.

Her actions, such as residing first with her parents and then with her maternal uncle, appeared to suggest an effort to convince the Court of her inability to earn. Justice Chandra Dhari Singh, who presided over the case, remarked that the petitioner had wide exposure to worldly affairs and a strong educational background.

Unlike women with limited opportunities who depend on their spouses for sustenance, she was equipped with the tools to achieve self-sufficiency. The Court encouraged her to actively seek employment rather than rely on maintenance.

“A well-educated wife, with experience in a suitable gainful job, ought not to remain idle solely to gain maintenance from her husband. Therefore, interim maintenance is being discouraged in the present case as this court can see potential in the petitioner to earn and make good of her education,” Justice Singh said on 19th March.

Adding to the complexity of the case, a WhatsApp conversation between the petitioner and her mother came under scrutiny. In this communication, the mother allegedly advised her daughter that taking up a job could undermine her alimony claims.

Although the legitimacy of this conversation is to be verified at trial, the Court regarded it as prima facie evidence of deliberate unemployment.

The timing of this exchange, occurring before the maintenance petition was filed, suggested an intentional attempt to remain jobless to strengthen her case for maintenance.

Consequently, the Court determined that the case did not warrant the granting of interim maintenance. It dismissed the wife’s plea challenging a family court’s earlier order, which denied her maintenance under Section 125 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC).

Telangana: Prakash Raj, Rana Daggubati, Vijay Deverakonda and Pranitha Subhash among 25 celebrities and influencers booked for promoting betting apps

Popular Tollywood actors Prakash Raj, Rana Daggubati, and Vijay Deverakonda along with 22 other celebrities are facing police action in Telangana after being booked for promoting illegal betting apps. The Cyberabad police in Telangana filed an FIR against 25 celebrities and influencers based on a complaint filed by a businessman Phaninda Sarma for allegedly promoting illegal betting, gambling and casino apps and causing financial loss to the public.

The celebrities and influencers named in the FIR reportedly include Pranitha Subhash, Manchu Lakshmi, Nidhi Agarwal, Ananya Nagalla, Siri Hanumanthu, Sreemukhi, Varshini Sounderajan, Vasanthi Krishnan, Shoba Shetty, Amrutha Chowdary, Nayani Pavani, Neha Pathan, Pandu, Padhmavathi, Imran Khan, Vishnu Priya, Harsha Sai, Sunny Yadav, Shyamala, Tasty Teja, and Bandaru Sheshayani Supritha. As per reports, actors Prakash Raj and Rana Daggubati are accused of promoting Junglee Rummy through pop-up ads. Vijay Deverakonda, Manchu Lakshmi, Pranitha Subhash and Nidhi Aggarwal allegedly promoted A23 Rummy, Yolo247, Fairplay Live and Jeet Win respectively by way of pop-up ads.

The complainant alleged that people have been losing their money through these apps. He said that he could also have fallen victim to one such app by depositing his money but he was prevented by his family. He added that several celebrities have been promoting these apps for huge sums of money. The FIR stated that these apps are leading to financial distress in many families. “Thousands of lakhs of rupees are involved in these illegal platforms and it is also leading many families into distress, especially that of middle-class and lower middle-class,” the FIR stated. “These platforms are encouraging the public, especially people that are in dire need of money, to invest their hard-earned and family money into those apps/websites and slowly get addicted to them, leading to total financial collapse,” the FIR said.

The police have started an investigation into these apps and have been trying to track the people behind these apps. “This is just the beginning of that investigation. We will see what are these apps, who are the people involved, what is the source of these apps, and other aspects. Based on the merit of the case and evidence available, we will go forward,” Commissioner of Police Avinash Mohanty told Indian Express.

The FIR has been lodged under sections 318(4) (cheating), 112(petty organised crime) read with 49(abetment) of the BNS, sections 3, 3A and 4 of the Telangana State Gaming Act (TSGA) and section 66(D) (cheating by personation using a computer resource) of the Information Technology (IT) Act.

Return the hostages and remove Hamas, else there will be total destruction: Israeli defence minister issues final warning to residents of Gaza Strip

As the Israel-Hamas ceasefire has stalled followed by renewed attack by Israeli forces on Gaza Strip, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has warned ‘total destruction’ of the strip if Hamas does not release the remaining hostages. The IDF on Wednesday said that it has launched “pinpoint” ground operations in central and southern Gaza Strip targeting Hamas bases.

The Israeli army said its operations were aimed at expanding the security zone near the border and creating a partial buffer between northern and southern Gaza. IDF troops have entered the Netzarim Corridor area, a route that splits Gaza into north and south, and have captured around half of it.

Defence Minister Katz said the govt would soon issue evacuation orders for combat zones in the Strip. “Gaza residents, this is a final warning. The first Sinwar ruined Gaza and the second Sinwar will completely obliterate it,” Israel Katz said. He was referring to slain Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar and his brother Mohammed Sinwar who has presumably succeeded Yahya.

“The Air Force strikes against Hamas terrorists were just the first step. Things will become much more difficult, and you will pay the full price,” he added. The defence minister said that if the hostages are not released and Hamas is not removed from Gaza, “Israel will operate with strength you have not yet seen.”

Israel Katz further said, “take the US president’s advice. Return the hostages and remove Hamas, and other options will open up for you, including leaving for other places in the world for those who desire.” He added, “The alternative is total destruction and ruin.”

IDF and Shin Bet have said that Israel’s strikes have targeted cells of terror leaders and operatives, rocket-launching positions, weapons, and other Hamas and Islamic Jihad terror infrastructure. Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza has said that over 400 people have been in the latest Israeli attack.

Israel resumed the attacks on Tuesday citing repeated refusal of Hamas to release the Israeli hostages the terror group has been holding since the 7 October terror attack on Israel.

While both sides had entered into a ceasefire resulting in Hamas returning some hostages and Israel freeing a large number of prisoners in exchange, it ended after Hamas rejected Israel’s demand to extend the first phase of the ceasefire and release more hostages. Hamas insists on moving on to the second phase which includes Israel withdrawing fully from Gaza and end the war permanently, but Israel is not willing do that until Hamas releases all the hostages.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have said that the war will not end until Hamas’s governing and military capabilities have been demolished. He said on Tuesday that from now on, negotiations on a continued ceasefire would only be conducted “under fire.”

Terrorists in Gaza Strip are still holding 59 hostages, including 58 of the 251 abducted by Hamas-led terrorists on October 7, 2023. At least 35 of the hostages have been confirmed dead by IDF.

Delhi: Asif strangled Komal, tied her body with a stone and threw it into a canal after argument

0

In the Sundar Nagri area of Delhi’s Seemaapuri, a man named Asif allegedly strangled a girl named Komal, tied her body with a stone and dumped the body into a canal after the two had an argument on 12th March 2025. The deceased victim’s dead body was recovered on 17th March. The accused has been arrested by the police.

According to Delhi Police sources, Asif, who drives a taxi in Delhi, has known Komal for a long time. On 12th March, Asif picked up Komal in his car from the Seemapuri area. During this time, the two had a fight over something and during the fight, Asif allegedly strangled Komal to death.

After killing Komal, Asif came up with a horrific method to dispose of the body. He tied the body to a heavy stone and threw it in the canal in the Chhawla area. Several days after the body was abandoned in water, it swelled up enough and came to the surface of the water. Local people saw the body in the canal and informed the police.

Earlier, Komal’s family had lodged a missing complaint with the police. After finding the body, the police registered a murder case at Chhawla police station and started an investigation. The police soon connected the dots and arrested Asif. The police are trying to find out if anyone else was involved in this crime along with Asif. Some reports say that one Javed was also involved in the murder.

Meanwhile, the deceased victim’s family has alleged that Komal’s neck was strangled with a green scarf, and there was a rope tied around her waist. The dead body has been sent for post-mortem and will be handed over to the family later.

Grabbing minor’s breasts, breaking pyjama drawstring not attempt to rape but aggravated sexual assault: Allahabad High Court

In a controversial decision, the Allahabad High Court has ruled that drabbing the breasts of a minor girl and breaking her pyjama drawstring is not an attempt to rape. The accusations against two “rape” accused were recently amended by the Allahabad High Court, which referred to their offence as “aggravated sexual assault” rather than an attempt at rape. Pawan and Akash were on trial for grabbing a minor girl’s breast and breaking the drawstring of her pyjamas. On 17th March, Justice Ram Manohar Narayan Mishra rendered the decision in Criminal Revision No. 1449 of 2024.

They were initially charged under section 376 (rape) of the Indian Penal Code and section 18 (Punishment for attempt to commit an offence) of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Now, they will be put on trial under section 354-B (assault or use of criminal force with intent to disrobe) of IPC along with sections 9/10 (aggravated sexual assault) of the POCSO Act.

“The allegations levelled against accused Pawan and Akash is that they grabbed the breasts of the victim and Akash tried to bring down lower garment of the victim and for that purpose they had broken string of her lower garments and tried to drag her beneath the culvert, but due to intervention of witnesses they left the victim and fled away from the place of incident. This fact is not sufficient to draw an inference that the accused persons had determined to commit rape on victim as apart from these facts no other act is attributed to them to further their alleged desire to commit rape on the victim,” the court pronounced.

The court further stated that neither the complaint nor the witness statements recorded under sections 200/202 CrPC contain any claims that the accused Akash got unrest after severing the lower garment’s string. Additionally, the court distinguished between an “actual attempt” to execute a crime and a “stage of preparation.”

It mentioned, “The specific allegation against Akash is that he tried to drag the victim beneath the culvert and broke the string of her pyjami. It is also not stated by witnesses that due to this act of the accused the victim got naked or got undressed. There is no allegation that accused tried to commit penetrative sexual assault against the victim. In order to bring out a charge of attempt to rape the prosecution must establish that it had gone beyond the stage of preparation. The difference between preparation and actual attempt to commit an offence consists chiefly in the greater degree of determination.”

According to the court, the facts of the case and the accusations made against the accused hardly amounted to an attempt at rape. The lower court has also been instructed by the high court to issue a new summons order in accordance with this directive. The offenders approached the court to contest the summons order that had been sent to them. They claimed that no sexual offense was proven, even if the complaint’s statement is taken at face value.

Background of the case

The case transpired on 12th January 2022, when Asha Devi, Mahadev’s wife, filed a complaint before the Special Judge, POCSO Act, Kasganj, under section 156(3) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). The woman revealed that she and her 14-year-old daughter were returning from her sister-in-law’s home in Patiyali of Kasganj distrcit at approximately 5:00 pm on 10th November 2021, when they came across the perpetrators, Pawan, Akash and Ashok on a muddy road.

Pawan who belonged to the same village promised to drop the young girl off at home safely and offered to give her a ride on his motorcycle. Asha Devi trusted his word and let her daughter go with him. However, according to the complaint, in addition to stopping the motorcycle next to a culvert, Pawan and Akash grabbed the girl’s breasts and tried to drag her under it, breaking the string of her pyjamas in the process.

After hearing the girl’s pleas, two witnesses, Satish and Bhurey who were passing by on a tractor, intervened as the situation deteriorated. After reportedly threatening the witnesses with a domestically produced handgun, the accused left the location. Asha Devi later went to the police after being assaulted and threatened by Pawan’s father, Ashok when she confronted him at his home. She submitted the application that resulted in the complaint case after no FIR was filed.

The Special Judge recorded Asha Devi’s and witness Satish’s statements under sections 200 and 202 of CrPC respectively, after considering the application as a complaint under CrPC section 200. The court summoned Ashok on 23rd June 2023 under sections 504 (insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and Akash and Pawan under section 376 IPC read with section 18 of the POCSO Act.

Nagpur violence: Police uncovers Bangladesh connection, social media posts from computers with Bangladeshi IP address instigated Muslim mobs

In the Nagpur violence case, Maharashtra Police has uncovered a Bangladesh connection. The police found social media accounts from Bangladesh that issued a threat to incite violence. 97 social media accounts which posted offensive and false rumours have been identified. Most of these posts were published from computers with Bangladeshi IP addresses. One such post threatened that Monday’s riots were just a small incident and there would be bigger riots in the future.

The cyber cell has taken action against 34 social media accounts for spreading rumours and inciting violence and 10 FIRs have been registered.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested 84 people so far, including mastermind Faheem Shamim Khan, city president of the Minority Democratic Party (MDP). However, on Wednesday, Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home Yogesh Kadam had put the number at 69. These include eight Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) workers.

19 accused have been sent to police custody till 21st March. Mastermind Faheem is accused of gathering more than 500 rioters and instigating violence. Khan was reportedly arrested within hours of filing the FIR at the Ganeshpath Police Station wherein he is named as an accused. The FIR includes charges of conspiracy to rape, molestation and misconduct. Police had released a photograph of 38-year-old Khan, a resident of Sanjay Bagh Colony in Yashodhara Nagar. He has been remanded to police custody till 21st March. A video had also reportedly emerged showing Khan delivering a provocative speech moments before the violence.

On the evening of 17th March, Nagpur underwent violent unrest that left more than 30 people wounded over rumours of the burning of a copy of the Quran during a protest by Hindu organisations demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. Demonstrators covered an effigy of the Mughal despot with a sheet and then put it on fire during the agitation. During the violence, a Muslim mob molested a woman police officer in the Bhhaladarpura area of Nagpur, Maharashtra, and attempted to disrobe her during the violence by the mob over Hindus demanding the removal of Aurangzeb’s tomb. An FIR has been filed against the rioters at Ganeshpeth police station.

Curfew is effective in several parts of the city as part of measures to restore peace.

While addressing the state assembly on 19th March, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, “Those who attacked police during the arson in Nagpur will be dug out from their graves. Attacks on police are unpardonable. They will get the strictest punishment. We won’t spare them.”

Supreme Court refuses to entertain Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain’s plea challenging demolition of 3 temples in Mayur Vihar, Delhi, asks him to approach the Delhi HC

0

The Supreme Court, on Thursday (20th March), refused to entertain a plea filed by Advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain challenging the demolition notice to three temples located in Mayur Vihar Phase 2 in Delhi. The Apex directed Advocate Jain to approach the Delhi High Court with his petition.

Advocate Jain had filed a petition in the Supreme Court on behalf of committees of three temples, namely Purbi Delhi Kali Bari Samiti, Sri Amarnath Mandir Sanstha, and Sri Badri Nath Mandir, against a demolition notice issued by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) dated March 19, 2025.

The plea stated that the temples were not given an opportunity to be heard by the DDA as the authority affixed its notice at 9 pm on 19th March informing that the temples would be demolished at 4 pm on 20th March. It further stated that the temples are 35 years old and the DDA even granted permission to the Kali Bari Samiti temple for organising Durga Pooja on the ground in front of the temple.

BJP MLA Ravinder Singh Negi said that the police force, along with DDA officials, arrived to demolish the temples without prior notice. “Without prior notice, the police force and the entire DDA staff arrived at the site at 3 AM. When we reached the spot, we questioned them, saying that whenever any demolition takes place, prior notice is required. They responded that in green belt cases, no notice is given, and they directly proceed with demolition…”, Negi said.

When the DDA officials arrived to demolish the temples, they were met with stiff opposition by locals. The officials were carrying an order from the Delhi High Court allowing the demolition of temples falling in the green belt. The demolition process was stopped after the intervention of Delhi CM Rekha Gupta. A green belt is an area designated under land-use planning where any kind of construction is prohibited.

DDA notice did not have a stamp or signature

Locals said that all three temples are registered and religious programs are held there every year. Two of the temples are said to have been built by Kashmiri Pandit refugees when they arrived in Delhi following their ethnic cleansing in Kashmir Valley. Since then, no notice has ever been served to the temples. Raising questions on the authenticity of the DDA notice, the locals also pointed out that the notice did not have any stamp or the signature of any official.

Maharashtra opposition accuses BJP of conspiracy to defame Aaditya Thackeray after Disha Salian’s father urged to probe his role in Disha’s death

0

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Ambadas Danve on Wednesday accused the BJP of ‘conspiring to defame’ party leader Aaditya Thackeray by raising questions on him in connection with the Disha Salian death case.

“I think this matter has gone to the court. We have no idea what he (Disha’s father) has said, but Aaditya Thackeray is a mature leader, a young leader. The Bharatiya Janata Party is conspiring to defame him by putting pressure on him. We don’t need to answer to this conspiracy. The court will answer,” Ambadas Danve told media.

This comes after Disha Salian’s father approached the Bombay High Court seeking a CBI probe and an FIR against Aaditya Thackeray in her death case.

Maharashtra’s former Home Minister and NCP (SP) leader Anil Deshmukh on Thursday also said that the developments in the Salian case seem like a conspiracy.

Speaking to the media, Deshmukh said, “I am taking information on the plea filed by Disha Salina’s father. All this now looks like a part of a conspiracy.”

Maharashtra MoS Home and Shiv Sena leader Yogesh Kadam also spoke to the media over Disha Salian’s father seeking a probe into Aaditya Thackeray’s alleged role in his daughter’s death case and said,” The honourable court’s orders will be followed.”

Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant also responded to the same and stated that the matter should not be politicised.

“The petition filed on the Disha Salian case was done by her father. It is their internal matter. The incident that took place a few years ago is not fit for the blame game. It is not right to make political comments and play politics on this,” said Samant.

Maharashtra Minister Sanjay Shirsat spoke to ANI and said, “Her death was suspicious. Today, her father has openly spoken. He has now approached the High Court. Those found guilty in this case will be sent to jail.”

Shiv Sena MLA Manisha Kayande also spoke on the matter and said, “We are not taking anybody’s name. But as for the reports. Disha Salian’s family had never approached the court. It is the first time that they have gone to the court. So whoever is responsible, whether it was suicide or some conspiracy. This is the question. We say that there should be a free and fair investigation.”

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP-SCP) leader Rohit Pawar also earlier in the day attacked the BJP, accusing the party of politicising late actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death for elections and claimed that the party would do politics over Disha Salian after her father sought a probe into her death.

Speaking to ANI, Pawar said, “If any person is trying to get justice, he (Disha Salian father) should get justice. He has gone to the court. We wish him all the best. If you look at the BJP now, they will start doing politics over it.”

“Four years ago, Sushant Singh Rajput died by suicide. Immediately after the suicide, banners were put up in Bihar stating, ‘We want justice for Sushant,’ only for the elections. After the elections, Sushant Singh Rajput was forgotten, and now, after four years, the BJP will take up the same issue ahead of the upcoming polls in Bihar in a few months,” he stated.

“Disha Salian’s father has gone to court. He has taken Aaditya Thackeray, but he has nothing to do with this. We are with him. Let the court decide about that, but looking at the BJP, they will definitely do politics over it in view of the Mumbai elections,” said Rohit Pawar.

Late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s father, KK Singh, on Thursday, supported the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Disha Salian’s father seeking a probe into his daughter’s death, as he expressed hope that a conclusion could be reached on both the incidents.

“I don’t know his reasons and motivation for moving the court, but what he has done is right, and through this, we can get a conclusion on whether it was a suicide or murder. This will also shed light on Sushant’s case,” KK Singh told ANI.

Disha Salian, who was a celebrity manager, was found dead on June 8, 2020. In 2023, the Mumbai Police formed a three-member special investigation team (SIT) to probe Disha Salian’s death. The Mumbai Police registered an accidental death case in the matter.
