Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut on Thursday in a series of tweets alleged that Sushant Singh Rajput was murdered and put up a chronology that led to his death.

Ranaut alleged that Sushant fell out with Yash Raj Film’s Aditya Chopra as self-made Sushant refused to be bound by contracts. Following the same, Chopra promised to ‘destroy him’, she alleged. After this, Chopra and Karan Johar, who have been accused of propagating nepotism in Bollywood, decided to ‘take matters in their hands’, Kangana tweeted.

She said that Karan Johar promised Sushant Singh Rajput a franchise but ‘dumped him’. Sushant was heartbroken about it. She then alleges that the ‘mafia PR’ started to circulate a malicious campaign around him calling him a ‘rapist’ and ‘drug addict’. Sushant Singh Rajput was accused of sexual harassment by his co-star Sanjana, which he denied.

Following his death, there were allegations that he was also a drug addict. His girlfriend Rhea Chakraborty was also under scanner by the Narcotics Control Bureau over alleged drug abuse in Bollywood. Several actors came under the scanner over the allegations of drug abuse.

Firing a salvo on filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt, Kangana said that he entered his life and started to ‘psyche him’ that he is bound to go Parveen Babi way because he was depressed. Babi was a former lover of Bhatt, who was rumoured to have been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. Kangana then said that if all depressed people go the Parveen Babi way, then his daughter Shaheen should also go that way as ‘she is official brand ambassador of depression’.

Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead on 14th June 2020 at his Mumbai residence. Initial reports suggested he died of suicide. However, his family alleged foul play. A CBI inquiry is initiated to investigate his death. On January 21, the actor would have turned 35.

On January 20, when the power was shifting hands in the U.S. from Trump to Biden, the official Twitter account of the U.S. ambassador to Israel was changed briefly to U.S. Ambassador to Israel, the West Bank and Gaza. It was reverted to U.S. ambassador to Israel quickly but screenshots were already taken, raising speculations over the potential change in the foreign policy.

Several sections of policymakers and media condemned the step.

Controversial move on day one – Michael McCaul

Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said that it was troubling to see that the administration opted to go ahead with the controversial move on ‘Day 1’ that too without consulting with the Congress.

Some have raised concerns that the change may reflect how the Biden administration is planning to deal with Israel, its settlements in the West Bank and the territories under Palestinian control (Gaza). McCaul further added, “It also seems to fly in the face of comments made by Antony Blinken yesterday. I strongly urge the president to clarify this provocative move quickly.”

In a follow-up, he said that the situation was swiftly addressed, and it “was not a signal of the direction this administration plans to take towards its Israel policy.”

Republican Senator Rick Scott of Florida, a known critic of Biden, accused the new administration of showing hostility to Israel. He said, “There is no country of West Bank or Gaza, only territories that Israel has been willing for decades to negotiate sovereignty over but has been met with only hostility and terrorism.”

Biden’s pick for secretary of State, Antony Blinken, had said that the USA would not change its embassy from Jerusalem. The sudden inclusion of West Bank and Gaza was noted as a contradiction to what Blinken had said. NPR’s Daniel Estrin reported the whole series of events and said that a spokesperson from the U.S. Embassy in Israel said it was an inadvertent edit and it does “not reflective of a policy change.”

Change of power

At 11:51 AM, David Friedman, President Trump’s ambassador to Israel, issued final goodbye to the account. It was taken over by the office of Jonathan Shrier, at the U.S. Embassy in Israel. The whole controversy erupted during that period. The account was reverted within two hours of the change. The Statement Department did not provide any official statement on the account change.

It has to be noted that Biden has stated that he intended to restore relations with the Palestinian Authority. The name change has angered the Palestinians as well. Salem Barahmeh, Executive Director, Palestine Institute for Public Diplomacy, questioned if the U.S. administration has ‘reduced’ them to the West Bank and Gaza.

It contradicted the U.S. policy in place that viewed the communities as in conflict with international law. SENSEX crosses 50,000 mark for the first time in history, Nifty nears 15000

The 30-stock benchmark of the Bombay Stock Exchange crossed the 50,000 mark for the first time on Thursday morning. The SENSEX soared past the 50,000 mark with global inflows and fuel surge. As it crosses past the historic 50,000 mark, it has created another history, as this is the fastest 10,000 points climb.

The official Twitter handle of the BSE India shared a info graph depicting the journey of the SENSEX. It shows the SENSEX crossing 1000 points for the first time in 1990, and the subsequent rises and falls throughout the years.

As per a Deccan Herald report, the SENSEX breaching the 50,000 mark created another record of the fastest 10,000 points climb. Earlier, the SENSEX had taken 633 days to go from 10,000 points to reach 20,000 points back in 2007. It had crossed the 40,000 mark 610 days back.

The SENSEX had taken 7507 days to go from 100 points to 10,000 and 633 days to reach 20,000. From 20,000 to 30,000 the journey had taken 2,680 days and from 30,000 to 40,000 it had taken 1,541 days.

Many economists and experts have shared celebratory messages and have congratulated the BSE for reaching this milestone.

The SENSEX had opened at a record high today. Yesterday, with a global rally along with the US Presidential inauguration, the index had surged 394 points and had closed at a record high of 49,792. The surge is being attributed to foreign funds buying into the Indian market.

Soon after Joe Biden took oath as the 46th President of the United States, China released a statement imposing sanctions of several former officials of Trump administration. Over 28 former Trump administration officials reportedly have been subjected to sanctions on Wednesday.

The statement was released by China minutes after Biden’s oath. Sanctions including travel ban and business restrictions have been imposed on the former officials including former secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, former national security advisor Robert O’Brien and former UN ambassador, Kelly Craft. The list of former Trump administration officials sanctioned by China include former President’s economic adviser Peter Navarro, his top diplomatic for Asia, David Stilwell, health and human services secretary, Alex Azar, former national security advisor John Bolton and former strategist Stephen Bannon.

Concerned officials and their families banned from entering China

China’s foreign ministry said in the statement, “Over the past few years, some anti-China politicians in the United States, out of their selfish political interests and prejudice and hatred against China and showing no regard for the interests of the Chinese and American people, have planned, prompted and executed a series of crazy moves which have gravely interfered in China’s internal affairs, undermined China’s interests, offended the Chinese people, and seriously disrupted China-US relations”. As a result of the sanctions, the named officials, their families and companies and institutions associated with them are prohibited from entering the mainland, Hong Kong and Macao of China.

On Wednesday, Pakistan Army claimed that it successfully test-fired a nuclear-capable surface-to-surface ballistic missile – Shaheen-III, that can carry out strike targets up to 2,750 kilometres. 

Soon after the launch, the Pakistan Army’s propaganda arm – the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said that the ‘successful’ launch of Shaheen-III missile was “aimed at revalidating various design and technical parameters of the weapon system”.

However, contrary to Pakistani Army’s successful Shaheen-III Missile tests, several reports coming from Pakistan suggest that the test carried out by Pakistan was a massive failure as the missile landed in a civilian area in Balochistan destroying several houses and injuring civilians.

Baloch Republican Party, one of the most influential political parties in the Balochistan, revealed the Pakistan Army’s latest test of the Shaheen-III missile, fired from Rakhi area of Dera Ghazi Khan landed at the civil populated area of Dera Bugti’s Matt region.

Taking to Twitter, Baloch Republican Party said that the security forces had evacuated all their posts in the area last night, but the missile was detonated in the presence of civilians in the area. The blast destroyed many houses and injured several people.

Sher Mohammad Bugti, the central spokesman of BRP, also alleged that the Pakistani Army has turned Balochistan into a laboratory.

As per social media reports, there were several injuries in the testing of Shaheen 3. The injured were not yet taken to hospital for treatment as per Bugti.

Another Baloch leader, Fazila Baloch, too said how in 1998 Pakistan had test-fired a nuclear missile in Chaghi which left many severely injured.

Bugti also urged world leaders to visit Dera Bugti to expose the missile test which led to destruction in Balochistan.

On his first birth anniversary after his sudden demise in June 2020, Sushant Singh Rajput’s sister today announced Sushant Singh Rajput Memorial Fund in Physics. The scholarship is worth USD 35,000 which equals to approximately Rs 25.5 lakh.

The fund provides graduate student support in the Department of Physics at the University of California, Berkeley with preference for students studying Astrophysics. Along with being an actor, Rajput was National Physics Olympiad winner and had a passion for astronomy and astrophysics.

Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead on 14th June 2020 in his apartment in which appeared to be death by suicide. However, later questions were raised and a CBI inquiry was initiated into his death.

Rajput would have turned 35 today.

MIM leaders call renaming Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar ‘Manuwadi’ and ‘racist’, create ruckus at bus depot

As the row over the renaming of Aurangabad to Sambhaji Nagar intensifies, an Aurangabad Samachar report stated that MIM workers created a ruckus in Vaijapur Bus Depot after the display board on one of the buses in the depot read ‘Sambhaji Nagar’ in place of Aurangabad.

A group of alleged MIM workers demanded the Vaijapur Bus depot authorities to hand them over the driver who drove the bus to the depot with the contentious display board. They threatened that if their demands were not fulfilled, they would take action in their own way. The leader of the group also proclaimed that they would not tolerate casteism in the Maharashtra Mahamandal.

“We are not going to tolerate any kind of casteism here. This is Maharashtra Mahamandal and there is no place for casteism here. Bring us the driver who drove this bus here with the display board of Sambhaji Nagar. Bring us the driver, the in-charge and others who travelled in this bus and answer our questions. And if you can’t answer our questions, then we would do what we want and take action what we deem fit,” the man, allegedly MIM worker threatened.

Later, the man was seen lashing out at the depot authorities for allowing the bus with Sambhaji Nagar display board to enter its premises. He then menacingly demanded the depot authorities to hand him over the driver who had driven the bus to the depot.

“The name of the district is Aurangabad and it will remain Aurangabad. Who is that pimp who wants the name to be changed to Sambhaji Nagar? Bring that pimp to me. Listen to me, I want that driver. He brought the bus till here. You ask the on-duty driver who handed over the bus to come here. I am requesting you to summon the driver here. Get that eunuch, the Manuwadi man who got the bus to the depot here,” the man said.

In another report published by ABP Majha, a bus was also vandalised at the Vaijapur Bus depot for carrying the display board reading Sambhaji Nagar instead of Aurangabad. According to the report, stones were pelted at the bus by unknown miscreants after which police filed a case against them and launched an investigation into the case.

Controversy over renaming Aurangabad continues to rage

The Aurangabad-Sambhaji Nagar debate has been raging on for some time now, with the Shiv Sena firmly backing the move to change the name of the city while its alliance partners in Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance—NCP and Congress staunchly opposing the move. Congress state chief Balasaheb Thorat said the rechristening of Aurangabad did not fall under the purview of Common Minimum Programme agreed upon by the alliance partners.

However, Shiv Sena hit back stating that the changing of Aurangabad’s name to Sambhaji Nagar was a popular public demand. Shiv Sena mouthpiece Saamana also published an article wherein it made a case for the renaming of the city and asserted that Muslims of the state don’t regard Aurangzeb as their uncle.

The controversy was escalated when the Chief Minister of the state, Uddhav Thackeray, referred to Aurangabad as ‘Sambhaji Nagar’ through his official Twitter account. However, this did not sit well with the Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance partners, who were displeased with the chief minister using the unauthorised name of the city in his communication.

Just days after India started vaccinating frontline workers against Covid-19, the country has already has started sending the vaccines to its trusted friends. Today India send the first batch of vaccines to Maldives and Bhutan as grant, after which both the countries expressed their gratitude for the same.

Maldives thanks India for “most generous gift”

As India on Wednesday shipped 1 lakh doses of Serum Institute made Covishield vaccine to Male to boost their fight against the coronavirus pandemic, the Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih thanked PM Modi, the Indian government and the people of India for the “most generous gift”.

The Maldives got the COVID-19 vaccine as a goodwill gesture from India and it was sent to Male within 96 hours of its India’s countrywide roll-out.

Solih expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Indian government during his address to the nation. Speaking in fluent Hindi, Solih said, “This vaccine is a generous donation from the Government of India to the people of the Maldives. On behalf of the people and the Government of the Maldives, and in my own name, I thank the friendly people and the Government of India, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.” 

Solih further added, “With the grace of Allah, we have secured enough vaccines to kickstart vaccination drive in Maldives. Our goal is to provide free vaccines to all Maldivians and residents in the coming months.”

The shipment of Serum-developed vaccines was handed over to the Maldives Government by the Indian High Commissioner Sunjay Sudhir in a special ceremony held at Male airport. Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Health Minister Ahmed Naseem were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, the Indian High Commissioner said, “With the help from India, Maldives will be able to commence its vaccination drive early in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.” He also added that the arrival of the vaccines in Male marked yet another milestone in the bilateral relations between the two countries.

Bhutan becomes the first country to receive India’s gift of COVID-19 vaccines

Besides the Maldives, Bhutan also received its first batch of COVID-19 vaccines from today India today. An Indian Airforce AN-32 aircraft delivered the first consignment of 150,000 doses of Serum Institute’s Covishield vaccines to Bhutan on Wednesday. The vaccines were received by the Bhutanese PM Dr Lotay Tshering.

As per the official press release by the Indian government, the AN32 aircraft carried the vaccines to Bhutan, just 96 hours after India’s ambitious roll-out of the immunisation exercise. Bhutan became the first country to receive the Government of India’s gift of the COVID-19 vaccines, the press release said.

The Indian Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj handed over the consignment of vaccines to Dr Tshering, Health Minister Dechen Wangmo, in presence of prime minister Lotay Tshering, foreign secretary Kinga Singye and a few other senior officials at the Paro International Airport.

Receiving the delivery, PM Tshering thanked India saying that the vaccines are a gift from a ‘trusted friend’ who has been with Bhutan all through the decades. He also said, “as we celebrate the arrival of the vaccine as the new milestone in our battle to beat the pandemic at home, we applaud the gesture that signifies the compassion and generosity of the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, and the people of India for the wellbeing of the humanity.”

The Prime Minister noted that India has sent the vaccines to Bhutan while the vaccination has just started in India. He said, “it is of unimaginable value when precious commodities are shared even before meeting your own needs, as opposed to giving out only after you have enough.”

India has assured that enough doses will be sent to Bhutan to cover its target population of around 533,500 with two doses of the vaccine. The remaining consignment will be shipped soon.

India to honour its commitment of helping neighbours in their fight against coronavirus

On Tuesday, India reiterated its commitment of helping Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Myanmar and Seychelles from Wednesday in their fight against the pandemic by providing them with COVID-19 vaccines. Earlier this month, India had stated that it would ship COVID-19 vaccines to Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Maldives and Mauritius in the next few weeks, in a bid to help them in kickstarting their vaccination process against the coronavirus.

The COVID-19 vaccines will soon be delivered to Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Mauritius after confirmation of pending regulatory clearances. The first shipment will be a goodwill gesture and subsequently, countries concerned would be able to get the vaccines on a payment basis from either Serum Institute or Bharat Biotech.

Farmer Protests: Union government proposes to suspend the implementation of farm laws for 1-1.5 years to end the protest

After the 10th round of talks between the union government and the farmer organisations protesting against the new farm laws, a resolution seems to be arriving. The government has proposed to suspend the laws for one or one and a half years, in hope that the farmers from Punjab will end the protest they are holding on the Delhi border.

After the end of the meeting today, Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar said that the govt has said that it is ready to put on hold the farm laws for one or one and half year. He also informed that the farmer unions have taken this proposal ‘very seriously’. The left backed farmer unions have said that they will discuss the offer among themselves tomorrow, and inform their decision in the next round of meeting scheduled on 22nd January.

“I feel that talks are progressing in the right direction and there is a possibility of finding a resolution on Jan 22”, minister Tomar told media after the meeting.

The Centre has proposed to submit an affidavit in Supreme Court for suspending the three laws for a mutually-agreed period. The govt has also proposed to form a committee to discuss various aspects on Minimum Support Price (MSP) and the three farm laws.

In a press release, the govt said that in all the meetings no discussion has taken place on the content of the three farms laws that the unions want repealed. The minister said that if the unions have any complaint against the laws or want to give any suggestions on them they can submit the same with the ministry. He said that the issue can be resolved by addressing the specific problems with the laws they may have instead of repealing them.

In the past meeting, no discussion took place on alternate solutions other than the demand to repeal that laws, and that’s why no resolution could be arrived at after those meetings. The govt is trying to work out alternatives from the beginning, the press release said.

Responding to the rumour that the new farm laws allow grabbing of farmland, the minister reiterated that nobody has the power to grab farmers’ land in the presence of these laws.

In an attempt to end the farmer protests during the shivering winter, the govt has proposed that the implementation of the farm laws can be suspended for 1 to 1.5 years. During this period, representatives of the farmers and the govt can discuss on the farmers issues in detail to arrive at a proper solution.

Farmers already reject the proposal

However, although the farmer unions have said that they will discuss the govt’s proposal tomorrow, it appears that the protestors already continuing with their hard stand on the issue. One farmer leader said that farmers have said that there is no point in suspending laws and made it clear that they only want the repeal of the laws.

It is notable that the Supreme Court has already stayed the implementation of the farm laws in view of the protests, but the unions were not satisfied with that and continued demand for repeal of the laws. The farmers have also refused to participate in discussions on the issue with the committee appointed by the apex court.

Niira Radia Tapes: Read how Navika Kumar was in thick with the infamous lobbyist known for brokering ministerial berths in the UPA regime

A few days back, the leaked screenshots of alleged chats between Republic TV Editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami and former BARC COO Partho Dasgupta stirred a political furore. The opposition political parties, along with Arnab’s nemesis in the media, fell over themselves to cash in on the anti-Arnab sentiment and discredit him and his brand of journalism.

Recently, Times Now anchor Navika Kumar, the former protégé of Arnab Goswami, also entered the fray, weighing in on her views on the current predicament of the Republic TV Editor-in-chief. During her show on the leaked conversations, Navika spoke about her one-time mentor Arnab Goswami. In about a 9 minute long monologue, she talked about how she filled in the chair vacated by Goswami after he left Times Now and started Republic.

She then talked about ethics and sanskar and how those who talk about them are mocked. Navika further talked about the twelve years she worked with Goswami. Comparing Goswami’s exit from Times Now to Republic’s launch to that of a small bird which developed wings to fly away in sky, a visibly emotional Navika said that after Arnab left, the most difficult thing for her was to fill in his shoes.

While Kumar held forth on the morals and ethics in her monologue on Times Now, it is worth revisiting the alleged conversation Navika had with the lobbyist Niira Radia. When the Niira Radia tapes were outed, Navika had emerged out of it somewhat unscathed since there were more prominent personalities whose role in brokering ministries in the Congress government had taken the centre-stage.

However, Navika’s alleged role in Radia tapes came under spotlight after the then External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj in 2015 posted a snarky tweet questioning the credibility of the Times Now journalist. Swaraj’s critical tweet against Navika led to the resurfacing of tapes in which the Times Now journalist could be heard speaking to lobbyist Niira Radia.

Navika Kumar’s alleged telephonic conversation with lobbyist Niira Radia on an imminent revolt within the BJP

In a telephonic conversation dated 10 June 2009 allegedly between Niira Radia and Navika Kumar, the latter could be heard prising out information from the lobbyist about a possible revolt brewing within the BJP. Initially in the tape, Radia appears a little sceptical in sharing the information she has with Navika on a suspicion that she would share it with the BJP stalwart Arun Jaitley, who was a close friend of the Times Now journalist. Radia then says something big is going to happen in the BJP meet which she could tell her only at 5 PM.

After Navika assures Radia that she would not seek out information from the BJP leaders, the lobbyist mentions that a revolt against the higher leadership, including Rajnath Singh, LK Advani, Venkaiah Naidu, Arun Jaitley, Narendra Modi and others is going to take place in the BJP meet. Radia further adds that the rebellion would be led by none other than Jaswant Singh.

“BJP needs a shake-up. Between Rajnath Singh and his own group, between LK Gandhi and his group, Arun Jaitley, Narendra Modi, Sudheendra Kulkarni and others have destroyed the party,” Niira is heard saying in her conversation with Navika.

To this Navika responds, “They need a thrashing…that should be interesting…at least BJP would hit the headlines, although for the wrong reasons, as they used to.”

Throughout the conversation, Niira could be heard beseeching Navika to not seek out information from the BJP leaders or trumpet about the coup before 5 PM. “Please don’t talk about this before 5 PM. Let him enter the meeting and circulate the letter. Once I receive the letter, I will forward it to you. You will anyway get the letter from your friends in the party,” Radia said.

Towards the end, the conversation drifts to friendly banter, with Navika commenting on how Radia, despite having the wherewithal to go on holidays to exotic locations such as London and other European countries, is stuck with the work in the country. Later, the duo decide to meet at lunch sometime in that week.

Niira informs Bhattacharya that Raja is most likely going to get the Cabinet Ministry for Telecom, adding that Navika was allegedly working at the behest of Virat Bhatia for Maran, who, too, was coveting the Telecom portfolio. Virat was an AT&T man, who used to be a point-man for Maran in Delhi.
