Saudi Arabia gives nod to the formation of amateur women’s football league for the first time

In a major shift in its anti-women stance, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia had allowed the formation of a community-level Women’s Football League (WFL) in November this year. As such, several amateur female football (soccer) players are now hoping to play the sport professionally.

“Finally, I am so happy that I now have the chance to achieve my dream. I used to play abroad but now thank God I can play in my own country. And if God is willing, I will get the chance to become a professional player,” stated soccer player Mariam Alamgiri.

While speaking on the development, coach Maram Albutairi remarked, “In the Eastern Flames Club, we have 52 players of various age groups. Some are below 17 years old and some are below 14 years old. We train them and develop their skills in different ways including overall fitness, neuromuscular compatibility, football skills and more. Hopefully, we will help them become professional players.”

Formation of amateur female soccer league in Saudi Arabia

The Women’s football league, developed by Ministry of Sports, Quality of Life program and Saudi Sports for All Federation, began its tournament on November 17 this year. Reportedly, a total of 24 teams from Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam participated in the amateur league. The players belonged to the age group of 17-39.

The tournament included a city qualification round what was later transformed into the Champion’s Cup. The finals were played on December 17 during which Challenge Riyadh beat Jeddah Eagles to win the tournament. With a prize of 1,50,000 Saudi Riyals (₹29.4 lacs), the tournament marked a major shift in the policy of the Saudi government towards women. Interestingly, it was only in January 2018 when women were allowed entry in football stadiums.

Tamil Nadu: Christian Pastor kidnaps a 13-year-old tribal girl from a hamlet in Tiruvannamalai, absconding for weeks

0

A tribal girl was allegedly abducted by a pastor from a tribal hamlet in the Jawadhu hills located in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. According to the reports, the 49-year-old Christian pastor identified as Jayaraj, a resident of Trichy, was camping in Perungattur, a tribal hamlet in the Jawadhu hills of TN. The Christian priest indulged in preaching and evangelism in the village for four years in the garb of a social worker.

In October, as schools were shut down due to the nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of the pandemic, Pastor Jayaraj took advantage of this situation and proposed that he would like to teach the children at his house.

The parents agreed to this arrangement and sent their children to his house. Jayraj allegedly misbehaved with the girls who visited his home for tuitions. The parents came to know about the harassment and registered a complaint. The police warned the pastor of dire consequences and asked parents to stop sending their children to his house for tuition.

Pastor lured kids saying he would teach them

However, on 24th October, a 13-year-old girl went missing and her parents have accused the pastor of abducting her. The girl’s father filed a complaint with the local police a day later. However, the girl has not been found. The police have not able to trace the pastor as he does not use a mobile phone which makes it difficult to trace his whereabouts. They have been in search for the pastor, who has abducted girl for more than three weeks now.

Recently, the police got information that the pastor was hiding at Velankanni. The police took the father along with them to catch him, however, he couldnot be found there.

The parents of the girl, losing hope of finding their daughter, have now approached the Superintendent of Police, Tiruvannamalai to plead with him to bring his daughter back. “I don’t know what condition my daughter is in. I’m afraid. Please help find my daughter immediately,” the father of the girl said.

Reportedly, upon investigation, the Police have found that he was married twice but both the wives left him. They have slapped a case of kidnapping on the pastor and the search for Jayaraj is going on.

Church crimes in India

There has been a dangerous trend of repeated cases of rape and other abusive incidents at Churches across the world. Unfortunately, India is not immune to this plague either. Christian priest and churches, like most cases worldwide, have been targeting the poor, destitute for their crimes but the cases go unnoticed.

However, in India, the crimes have been coming into public domain lately. There have been several incidents of sexual harassment and other abuse by Church officials and priests.

In 2018, a 45-year-old Christian priest was booked for the brutal rape an 11-year old girl in Vallampadu, Andhra Pradesh. In July 2017, Father Saji Joesph, a priest who was the director of a children’s home in Kerala’s Wayanad district, was arrested after allegations of sexually abusing minor boys.

Franco Mulakkal, a Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar, was arrested and released on bail later for allegedly raping a 44-year old nun at a guest house in Kuravilangad in May 2014. Similarly, Father Johnson V Mathew, a priest of Malankara Orthodox church was accused in the rape and sexual abuse of a married woman belonging to the fold was arrested in July 2018.

In February, the Mysuru police had arrested three pastors (religious leaders associated with protestant Churches) for allegedly raping a teenager in Mangaluru. All three Christian priests have now been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. In another incident, a 60-year-old pastor named Chandra Kumar belonging to a local church in Nagaland was arrested for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

In another incident, a 33-year old Catholic priest, Father Prakash Damor was arrested in Jhabua district of Madhya Pradesh for abetting a 17-year-old girl’s suicide. Recently, a special Mahila Court in Cuddalore had sentenced a church priest to 30 years in prison and nine others to life in prison for their involvement in the horrifying 2014 Tittakudi rape case, which involved two minor girls.

In September, a 68-year-old Christian priest of the Syro Malabar Church named Father George Padayattil, the vicar of Holy Cross Church in Chendamangalam in Ernakulam district, was booked for the rape of three 9-year-old girls

Similarly, a Class IX student had died in October at GBP hospital after being allegedly tortured repeatedly by the warden of Holy Cross School, Tripura. In November this year, thirty-seven Catholic priests from different parishes in Mysuru had written to Pope Francis to remove the Bishop of Mysore KA William over his alleged involvement in criminal offences, misappropriation of funds and sexual misconduct.

Maria Antony Raj, a 60-year-old the catholic priest, who is the correspondent of the St Mary’s High School in the Gandhipuram area of Coimbatore was arrested for forcing the girl students to open sexually explicit content on his mobile phone. Reportedly, another Christian priest named Shalom Babu Tandi has been booked by Pathalgaon police station for the alleged rape of a minor girl in his care.

In 2019, Syro-Malabar Church Priest Robin was convicted by the Thalassery POCSO court in February 2019 for raping and impregnating a 16-year-old girl back in 2016.

Update: Priest Savi Avangattu mentioned in this report was later acquitted of all charges due to lack of evidence. The minor who accused him turned hostile in the court and took back all the charges, which the prosecution observed could have been due to out of court settlement. The Priest told OpIndia that he didn’t press any defamation charges against the party that accused him as ‘it is ingrained in his mind and his spirit to forgive those who have harmed him or sinned against him’.

West Bengal: Amidst chants of Jai Shri Ram, Amit Shah holds road show in Bolpur, vows to throw away Bangladeshi infiltrators

Amidst chants of Jai Shri Ram an unprecedented road show of Home Minister Amit Shah took place in West Bengal’s Bolpur.

The roadshow started at Hanuman Mandir Stadium Road in Bolpur, West Bengal. “I haven’t seen a roadshow like this in my life. This roadshow shows love and trust of people of Bengal towards PM Narendra Modi. People of Bengal want change,” HM Amit Shah said. He added how this gathering of people for the roadshow shows the anger of people towards Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee.

“Give one chance to Narendra Modi. We will make ‘Sonar Bangla’ in 5 years,” he said.

While addressing the crowd, Shah said, “This transformation is not to change the chief minister or the ruling party but to develop Bengal. This transformation is to end the violence in state. You gave chance to Congress, you gave chance to communists and you gave chance to TMC. Now give a chance to BJP. We will make this Sonar Bangla in five years.”

Amit Shah further added that the change taking place in Bengal is for the way ahead and to stop infiltration from Bangladesh.

“Modi could not live with his wife even for five days, How will he rule the country,” says Anti-Hindu propagandist Bishop Ezra Sargunam

Hitting a new political low, controversial Christian evangelist pastor and DMK supporter Bishop Ezra Sargunam hurled abusive remarks against Prime Minister Modi, saying he did not have any merit to rule the country as he could not live with his wife for even five days, reports Commune.

On Friday, Bishop Ezra Sargunam, who is known for his rabid anti-Hindu hatred, took part in the ‘hunger strike’ led by Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) chief MK Stalin in Chennai against the recently passed farm laws. He was joined by fellow anti-Hindu propagandists such as MDMK chief Vaiko, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi leader Jawahirullah and other leaders belonging to the opposition parties.

Speaking at the event, Ezra Sargunam attacked Modi government over its policies and said that whatever they are speaking at the event should echo in Delhi. He said the speeches made at the event should fall in the ears of Modi.

“He is not going to change his mind anyway. He is a man who has come to loot the country and is doing his job correctly. His duty is to support the four rich men. He doesn’t care about the poor. But he will keep saying ‘I was born poor, I sold tea, I am living my life for the poor’. But friends, he keeps doing exactly the opposite,” said Bishop Ezra Sargunam making vile remarks against Prime Minister.

Continuing his derogatory act, Bishop Ezra said that PM Modi does not fear God as he does not have a conscience. Making personal abuses against PM Modi, the controversial Christian evangelist said that if Modi had lived with his wife at least for 5 days he would have known the difficulties of everyday life.

Spewing further venom against PM Modi, Ezra Sargunam said, “Can’t you live with your wife after marriage even for a week?! What merits do you have to rule this country? This fake man.. We will be facing difficulties like these until this Modi is removed. He doesn’t know any difficulties. Only if he had raised children would he know the difficulties! We don’t even know with whom he lived! We are now stuck with him. Let us all pray to destroy him.”

The shocking statements actually in the presence of DMK chief MK Stalin and other opposition leaders.

Bishop Ezra Sargunam – anti-Hindu evangelist who wants to punch Hindus in the face

Bishop Ezra Sargunam is a controversial evangelist from the state of Tamil Nadu. He has close ties with the DMK and has on several occasions supported them, especially during the elections. He is known for his deep-seated hatred for Hindus and a penchant for Church Planting.

In 2019, Ezra Sargunam was caught making hate speech against Hindus after he had said that there was no religion called Hinduism, further adding, “Punch on their (Hindus) face, let them bleed. Then make them understand the truth (Christianity)”.

According to him, a group of Brahmins at that time said that they would not accept scheduled castes and tribal people as Hindus. They would also only accept a “Good Brahmin” as a Hindu. He claimed that these Brahmins classified 50% of the country’s population as not Hindu. Then while supposedly referring to the recent rise of Hindu Nationalism in the elections he said that this happened because everyone was “Hinduized” for political gains. In his own words, he said that Hinduism is an “Artificial Religion”.

“Coronavirus vaccine can turn people into crocodile or bearded ladies,” says Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro

On Thursday, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro launched an attack on Coronavirus vaccines and dismissed the efficacy of Coronavirus vaccine developed by Pfizer-BioNTech claiming that it could turn patients into crocodiles or bearded women.

In a statement, Bolsonaro said, “In the Pfizer contract it’s very clear: ‘we’re not responsible for any side effects. If you turn into a crocodile, it’s your problem”. The president further added, “If you become superhuman, if a woman starts to grow a beard or if a man starts to speak with an effeminate voice, they will not have anything to do with it.” This is despite the fact that the said vaccine is already being administered in the UK and the USA, and undergoing trials in Brazil and other countries.

Since the emergence of the Coronavirus pandemic earlier this year, Jair Bolsonaro has been sceptical about it. He had dismissed it as “a little flu.” He had also lifted the lockdown after imposing it, saying their country is safe from the virus as the population is younger and the weather is warmer. He had termed the lockdown announced in various places as “hysteria”.

Jair Bolsonaro refuses to undergo vaccination

The Brazilian President has also been sceptical of the Coronavirus vaccines. While launching a mass immunisation programme, he informed that he would not be vaccinated. “Some people say I’m giving a bad example. But to the imbeciles, to the idiots that say this, I tell them I’ve already caught the virus, I have the antibodies, so why get vaccinated?” Bolsanaro stated. It may be mentioned that he was diagnosed with the deadly virus in July, and had recovered within three weeks.

Supreme Court makes vaccines ‘obligatory’, but not ‘compulsory’

Jair Bolssonaro emphasised that vaccines would be free and widely available, following approval of Brazil’s regulatory agency Anvisa, but not compulsory. However, the Supreme Court of the country has said that it was ‘obligatory’ to undergo vaccination, although it cannot be forced. As such, local authorities may fine or ban such people from public spaces but not force them into immunisation.

Jair Bolsonaro has been criticised for a ‘late and chaotic’ immunisation programme. As of December 20, Brazil has recorded a total of 72 lac cases and 1.86 lac fatalities.

What is a Hindu Temple: Their Symbolism and Vastu Shastra

A Hindu temple is not essentially only a place to perform religious rites; it is more of a teerth, a place where one goes to seek union with the Supreme Consciousness or Divinity and attain moksha. In Hinduism and other Indic religions, life is itself viewed as a journey (a teerth) from birth to death, where death is just a part of a longer journey that ultimately aims at attaining moksha.

This vision of the life as a journey is beautifully expressed in the Bhatiyali songs of the fishermen folks from undivided Bengal, where these simple people living on their boats away from their loved ones for months, would seek the meaning of life and existence with the only companion they had: the endless river, its waters merging with the deep blue sky in the distant horizon.

These rivers were so integral to these fishermen and those that lived on their banks that their waters came to symbolise the meaning of life itself in their songs. As one rowed through life, the river banks or ghats became allegorical to various stages in life, starting with birth, moving on through love, pain, happiness, with the final ghat or station being death: O Majhi Re, Apna Kinara Nadiya Ki Dhara Hai… However, death is just another ghat or station, and does not bring in moksha; the final release is achieved only through the attainment of Brahmavidya or Supreme Knowledge.

While the great ascetics can hope to achieve release in their lifetime (jivan mukti) or in death, for the common people other ways remain open to help them move towards the Centre or Moksha. Going for a teerth is one such way, which not only brings happiness but also helps the devotee to take a step forward towards the divine union; similarly a visit to a temple is a spiritual journey, a pilgrimage or teerth that seeks union with the Supreme Divinity, with the temple acting as a medium to help the devotee unite with his preferred God.

Baseswara temple in Bajoura, Kullu

Teertha or sacred sites refer to pilgrimage places that are often seen located beside water bodies, such as a river, sea, or lake. The word teertha, which means a passage, is closely associated with the river of life that helps one in self realization and crossing over to reach the Centre. It is a sacred ground or an active energy field, where one can achieve moksha or the final release.

Thus, a teertha is not the end goal by itself; it is where the journey to the Centre starts. That is why there are so many teerthas spread across India, and the whole of India is considered as a sacred site of divine energy; while the Garudapurana mentions seven such special cities that help to attain moksha: Ayodhyā Mathurā Māyā Kāśī Kāñcī Avantikā| Purī Dvārāvatī caiva saptaitā mokṣadāyikāḥ.

It is also the same reason why one need not even undertake the the teerth yatra at all and still achieve self realization through control and training of the mind and faculties. Manasa-teertha or an inward journey leads one towards his inner soul, where he can bathe in the pure deep waters of Truth and Brahmajnana, thus being able to see the real nature of the world around him.

“Gods play where groves are near rivers, mountains, and springs…” Panchavaktra temple in Mandi Himachal Pradesh

Teerthas being energy sites where one senses the presence of divinity, it is natural that temples would be built on such sites. According to Brhat Samhita the “gods always play where lakes are, where the sun’s rays are warded off by umbrella of lotus leaf clusters…gods always play where rivers have for their bracelets the sound of the flight of curleys and the voice of the swans for their swans for their speech …gods play where groves are near rivers, mountains, and springs, and in towns with pleasure gardens… it is such places that the gods love and always dwell in” [play here translates to ‘being present,’ which means the presence of celestial beings that act as an intermediary between man and the Supreme Consciousness/Brahman].

Thus, these are places where gods are installed and temples are built, whose towering shikharas lead the devotee’s eyes from this world to the other worlds above. While temple designs may vary based on time and location, there is one basic regulating factor that remains unchanged: the plan, known as the Vastupurushamandala.

Bateswara group of temples, Morena , Madhya Pradesh

Vastupurushamandala is the ritual diagram that regulates the site plan and the ground plan, and is drawn on the ground before temple construction starts, over which the temple will stand. It is always a square and records what is known as an architectural rite, and as per Samaranganasutradhara, the precise drawing of this rite is the first step in Indian architectural science.

The word Vastupurushamandala has three words, of which Vastu refers to the site, which is the bodily existence; Purusha represents the universal Essence, which is the Source and Principal of all things that has no substance but gives the Form; and Mandala is any closed polygon, which is a square in this case. The temple stands over the diagram of this Vastupurushamandala, which is the fundament from which the structure rises.

The temple thus built over this well levelled intellectual plane is where the entire world exists, which is the meeting point of Heaven (para prakriti- beyond Existence) and Earth (apara prakriti- Existence), and is accessible to man. Vastupurushamandala is also considered to be a Yantra, where the latter is a geometrical method to bind an aspect of the Supreme Principle for the purpose of worship.

Vastu purusha mandala is the metaphysical diagrammatic design of cosmos on which the whole concept of Vastu Shastra is based. It is believed that Vastu purusha is lying down on the cosmos in a way that his head is resting in North-east direction which represents balanced thinking; lower body faces South-west, which represents strength and firmness; his navel is in center of the earth signifying cosmic awareness and holiness; while his hands face North-west and South-east which signify energy. Vastu purusha is the presiding deity while other eight directions have their own specific Gods that govern their directions. The mandala is basically the enclosed area in which Vastu purusha is lying down, thus signifying his birth from nature. On the basis of this structure and prescribed directions all construction work is recommended, which includes physical characteristics such as placement of doors, windows, etc. (photo from public domain)

When it is decided that a temple will be built, there will be three involved in the initial process: the Yajamana (the donor or the sacrificer) on whose behalf the temple will be built; the architect or Sthapati who builds the temple; and the Sthapaka or the architect-priest under whose guidance the sthapati will work. Once temple building activity starts there will be four classes of craftsmen or silpin involved: Sthapati (designing architect and the foremost one), Sutragrahin (surveyor), Taksaka (sculptor), and Vardhakin (builder/painter/plasterer).

The Sthapati must be an expert in guiding the construction work, be well versed in 4 Vedas, and all shastras including cosmology, astrology, and all other sciences; he must be an expert in mathematics, know the Puranas well, and be free from all vices.

The shape of the Vastu for gods and Brahmanas is square” ~ Mayamata.

The square is the fundamental form in Indic architectural sciences; the perfect and integral form of Indian architecture. It presupposes (implies the presence of) of a circle and results from it, and both became a part of Indian architecture from the Vedic fire altar, or Agni. As per Satapatha Brahmana, the sacrificial ground is called a Vedi as the gods obtained the earth by performing sacrifices on four sides, thus making the sacrificial ground symbolic of the earth.

The square does not refer to the outline of the earth; but connects the four cardinal points; East, West, South and North. Thus, earth is chatusbhristi or four cornered (Rig Veda, 58. 3), symbolically represented as Prithvi mandala; however when considered in itself, the earth is circular (Rig veda, X. 89). It is this square Vedi which forms to be the sacred ground for temple building.

A brief note on Temple Vastu Shastra

Indian temples should adhere to Vastu as much as possible, because it is the place where people come to seek divine blessings in order to fulfill their wishes. It is a place of peace and harmony, where a darshan of the divinity is the uppermost thought in everyone’s mind. There are many temples which have been constructed with Vastu non-adherence, and it has been observed that in many cases such temples fail to prosper in terms of harbouring peace and possessing the divine energy or essence.

Any improper orientation in the temple construction is believed to bring in chaos and mishaps that may have adverse effects in the lives of those associated with it, especially on that of the Yajamana. Thus it is imperative that the prominent features of Vastu be considered while constructing a temple.

1. Every shrine must be constructed facing East, with entrance in the same direction. East direction is sacred in Vastu because sun rises from this direction, and the Sun is the sole energy giver. Therefore according to Vastu the shrine and main entrance should always be East facing, while the chief deity must also face the same direction as well.

2. The temple plot should have a regular shape; and irregular shapes while constructing a shrine should be avoided, as plot shapes in a triangle, circle, or oval are prohibited & considered inauspicious. Before the architectural rite of drawing the Vastupurushamandala can be done the land must be made absolutely level and firm, with no parts rising out.

3. The place to keep shoes in the temple is best located in the Southern side, while a tank for drinking or a water resource can be built in the Eastern side.

4. A temple can have four main gates, of which two are ideally placed in the East direction and two in the North. However if there is only one gate to the temple, then it is best to have it placed in the East direction.

5. Building an entrance gate in the South direction must be avoided, and the main door must be stronger and bigger than the other ones in the temple.

6. Provision for a window should be made on the Eastern side only.

7. Place for God’s image must be higher than the ground and all the murtis must placed in a manner that they face East; only Lord Hanuman, Lord Dakshinamurti, and Goddess Kali can also face South.

8. Building residential and commercial places near or in front of the temple should be avoided. The shadow of the temple should not fall on the places around the temple.

9. Water storage must be located in North-east corner if underground, and over-head tank must be placed in the South-west.

10. Kitchen temples must be situated in the South-east corner as this is the place for the Fire element.

11. Charity/donation boxes must be kept in East or North direction.

12. A temple is best built on the site where there is a river, sea, or mountain in the East or North direction.

Tamil Nadu: Golden mangalsutra of Amman stolen from a temple in Thiruvidaimaruthur, probe underway

0

Another incident of temple theft has come to light. As per reports, unidentified miscreants had broken into an ancient temple close to Thiruvidaimaruthur in Thanjavur district and stole the golden mangalsutra (Thaali) of the Goddess. The incident took place in 350-year-old Anandavalli Sametha Baskareswarar Temple, located at Baskararajapuram in Thiruvidaimaruthur in Tamil Nadu.

Sivanadiyaar Senathipathi, the priest at the temple who performs pooja every morning and evening, locked the temple at night and went back home post rituals. When the doors were opened by the temple guard the next day, he found four locks of the temple were broken. After entering the temple premises, it was found that the Thirumangalyam and other gold and silver items used in puja in the Ambal shrine were missing.

A complaint has been launched by the temple administrator Krishnasami at the Thiruvidaimarudur police station. The police have started an investigation into the matter. According to a report in Kathir News, devotees have alleged that the Department of Treasury is not appointing the guards for the temples. The negligence of the government officials is resulting in the loss of temple wealth.

Saudi Arabia sacks 100 Islamic clerics for not condemning Islamic terror organisation ‘Muslim Brotherhood’

The Saudi Arabia government has sacked nearly 100 Islamic imams and preachers from mosques in Makkah and Al-Qassim for failing to condemn activities of radical Islamist terrorist organisation – ‘Muslim Brotherhood’ despite instructions from the government.

According to a report by Middle East Monitor, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance had issued instructions for all imams and preachers to criticise the Islamist outfit and blame them for causing differences and divisions within society.

The ministry had ordered preachers to dedicate the Friday sermon to support the recent statement by the Saudi Council of Senior Scholars in which the council described the group as a “terrorist” organisation that does not represent Islam’s true teachings but rather serves its partisan interests.

Accordingly, mosque preachers across Saudi Arabia were issued diktats last month to issue sermons in warning the faithful against the dangers posed by the banned outfit. The clerics had devoted their pre-prayer sermons to emphasize the crucial importance of unity and avoiding discord. They had issued warning against groups operating under the cloak of religion for mundane agendas, mainly the Brotherhood.

However, it is alleged that the preachers from Makkah and Al-Qassim neglected the Saudi government diktat and did not issue any sermons criticising the Brotherhood.

Following that, the General Department of Islamic Affairs requested the ministry to terminate the service of more than 100 preachers after a two-week process of the headcount of preachers.

Saudi Arabia’s hostile relationship with the outfit

Saudi Arabia formally designated the Egypt-based Muslim Brotherhood a terrorist organisation in 2014 and banned it in the kingdom.

In the 1950s, Saudi Arabia gave shelter to thousands of Brotherhood activists facing jail and repression in Egypt, Syria and other Islamic countries. However, Brotherhood soon gained influence in the kingdom. The rift started after Iraq’s 1990 invasion of Kuwait and Saudi conduct in the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq. The Muslim Brotherhood had openly criticised the US military presence in the kingdom.

However, the authorities had then crushed the radical Islamic organisation but blamed the movement for sowing dissent. In 2002, the Saudi interior minister had referred the to the Muslim Brotherhood as the “source of all evils in the kingdom.”

In 2013 Saudi backed a military coup in Egypt which saw then Defence Minister Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi overthrow the country’s first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi who hailed from the Brotherhood.

What is Muslim Brotherhood?

The Muslim Brotherhood is a pan-Islamic ‘movement’ founded in Egypt in 1928 by Hassan al-Banna, a schoolteacher working in the town of Ismailia near Suez. The aim of the movement was to revive the Islamic religion, which would enable the Muslim world to compete with the West and shake off colonial rule.

The teachings of Banna spread across the Islamic world, beyond Egypt, creating various Islamist political movements- including missionary, charitable and advocacy organizations. Even many political parties in various countries in the region— trace their roots to the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, some of them use the name Muslim Brotherhood and others do not.

Various offshoots and affiliates of the group have been linked to terrorist attacks in the past and have sparked troubles elsewhere in the Middle East. The Muslim Brotherhood is considered to be the forerunner of modern Islamic terrorism.

The government of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in Egypt has classified the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization and often accuses it of carrying out terrorist attacks. The Muslim Brotherhood (MB) is already banned in many countries, including in Islamic countries like the Jordan, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Egypt, Syria. Even Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan have banned the Muslim Brotherhood.

Constitutional crisis in Nepal as PM KP Oli recommends dissolution of Parliament. Here is why

In a new development, Nepal Prime Minister KP Oli has recommended the dissolution of the Parliament during an emergency cabinet meeting on Sunday morning.

Energy Minister Brashaman Pun informed, “Today’s Cabinet meeting decided to recommend the President to dissolve the Parliament.” As per reports, the decision came at the backdrop of stiff opposition from his own party members for issuing an ordinance on Tuesday that empowered him to make crucial appointments. Led by former PMs Prachanda and Madhav Nepal, the Nepal Communist Party (NCP) has been pressuring KP Oli to withdraw the controversial ordinance.

It is important to mention that the standing committee of the NCP has passed a resolution on Wednesday asking KP Oli to withdraw his ordinance. Even though he had agreed to comply initially, he later changed his mind. The Nepalese Prime Minister had met Prachanda and assured to withdraw the ordinance if the resolution was withdrawn. While KP Oli sought for cooperation, Prachanda refused to comply. He also met Governor Bidya Dev Bhandari and Home Minister Ram Bahadur Thapa to contain the political turmoil.

The constitutional crisis in Nepal

Forced by circumstances, PM Oli sought support from Thapa, a close aide of Prachanda, in dissolving the federal Parliament. Although he was advised against taking the step, the Nepalese Prime Minister had made up his mind till then. It is important to note that the Nepalese Constitution has no provisions for dissolution of House, thereby, giving way to a new constitutional crisis

Tensions brewing within NCP since anti-India comments of KP Oli

The Prime Minister of Nepal KP Oli earlier faced a tremendous amount of heat from within his own party Nepal Communist Party as demands for his resignation increased gradually after he strained ties with India and reports of China illegally encroaching nearly 33 hectares of Nepalese land.

According to reports, a crucial meeting of ruling party NCP’s Standing Committee was scheduled on July 6 to decide the fate of KP Oli. The meeting of the Nepal Communist Party’s 45-member Standing Committee, the most powerful body of the party, was postponed as the party failed to forge consensus on the issue of resignation of Prime Minister Oli. The senior leaders of the party had earlier demanded Prime Minister Oli’s resignation, stating that his recent anti-India remarks were “neither politically correct nor diplomatically appropriate.”
