On Friday, in his programme ‘Neta Nagri’, journalist Rajdeep Sardesai was made to acknowledge the failure of the erstwhile Congress government led by PM Jawaharlal Nehru in safeguarding India’s border with China. Speaking on the current situation in Ladakh over the faceoff with China, Sardesai claimed that the ghost of Nehru still haunts the BJP.

As seen in below clip, Sardesai claims that BJP has ‘built a narrative’ that ‘Nehruji‘ had completely failed against China during the 1962 war and that he was a weak leader.

Speaking on the current government, he said that PM Modi wants to show that we are not like Nehru. “We are that kind of government that can look at China in the eye. Rajdeep suggested a sinister perception game of the BJP. He was then interrupted by his colleague Saurabh Dwivedi who asked Sardesai to elaborate on his usage of the term ‘narrative’. “What do you mean ‘built a narrative’? It is truth, right? What is ‘narrative in this?” he questioned.

At this point, Sardesai is at a loss of words and shifts goalpost to the NDA government banning the Chinese apps over privacy and security reasons. Dwivedi again interrupted him and said how he is not talking about the optics of the current union government but the ‘narrative’ bit Sardesai is talking about. “In 1962 from the point of view of military we were completely unprepared. With regards to Nehru’s decisiveness, and how without any experience the soldiers were sent on the field… Nehru had many achievements but 1962 war has been a failure,” Dwivedi said.

Taking aback by the rebuttal, Rajdeep Sardesai conceded, “I am just highlighting the ‘narrative’ part of the story. This is, however, the truth. It was his (weakness). It was a Himalayan blunder.”

Nehru’s Himalayan Blunder

In the 1962 India-China war, India faced a rather humiliating defeat. After the Indian independence in 1947, Britain left India to settle boundary disputes with Pakistan, Nepal and China on its own. China was not prepared to let Nehru get away with his “forward policy” of aggression. On its Western (Ladakh) border, Nehru’s “forward policy” in September 1962 tried to force the Chinese out of territory it claimed as its own. Nehru announced on October 11 that the army had been ordered to “free our territory.” That’s how the war began with China reacting to the situation.

Nehru at that time was away from India. The Chinese attacked simultaneously on the Ladakh area and NEFA, India bordering China on the Tibetan side. The Chinese managed to capture 11,000 km² of area in Aksai Chin and substantial area in NEFA. The Indian army was not prepared to go to war and did not even have basic essentials like warm clothing and boots and other protective gear needed to fight in such cold conditions. In his book Himalayan Blunder, a war memoir, Brigadier John Dalvi writes how China had planned the attack while maintaining a different position on war officially. ‘Romantic Rape’: Read how an Odia TV channel was caught promoting a talk show that was ‘romanticizing’ rape

Recently, a Twitter user had shared a video clip from Odisha’s popular news channel Kalinga TV. The video clip was from a talk show named ‘Chit Chat’ where two actors were having a conversation. Shockingly, the female actor is seen asking the male actor whether he would like to do a ‘romantic scene or rape scene’?

In the video-clip shared by Odia Twitter user Kumarika, the female actor in the Kalinga TV show is seen asking the actor whether he would prefer a ‘romantic scene or a rape scene’? Looking at the male actor’s hesitation, the female actor laughs out loud, saying she has now understood the male actor’s hesitation and she knows what he would prefer.

Further in the clip, the male actor tries to explain to the female actor that a rape scene cannot be romantic and he always wanted to be a ‘hero’, not a villain. To which the female actor replies, “so you wanted to do a romantic rape scene, not a usual rape scene like the villains do”.

The actor then says, “rape cannot be romantic, be practical. Romance is two-way. If I am coming to rape you, how can I romance you?” To which the female actor replies, “Imagine a scene, where the director asks you to rape, you are being expressive as a rapist, but inside you are feeling romantic.”

The actor then says, “That will be very hard, as an actor I would certainly prefer that my director gives me a ‘romantic rape’ scene.

Kalinga TV had used the ‘romantic rape’ conversation in their promo video

Kumarika further stated that when she searched Kalinga TV’s YouTube channel, she found that it was an old episode where Kalinga TV had even used the ‘romantic rape’ conversation between the two actors in its promo clip shared on YouTube. When OpIndia got in touch with Kumarika, she stated that the episode was being re-telecast last week and it was shocking for her to see the blatant normalisation of a heinous crime on a TV show, that too without any viewer discretion and during lunch hours where families gather to watch TV together.

The video clip generated outrage among Twitter users from Odisha who slammed Kalinga TV for promoting such content that shows blatant normalisation, and even ‘romanticisation’ of a heinous crime. Kumarika had even lodged a complaint with the Indian Broadcasting Foundation regarding the objectionable content aired by Kalinga TV.

Kumarika has informed that she had later found that the channel has restricted access to the said episode, but the short promo clip was there. Later, Kalinga TV blocked Kumarika on Twitter and now the said episode and the promo clip are both showing on YouTube as ‘private’.

Kalinga TV issues clarification

After restricting public access to the said episode of Chit Chat and its promo on their YouTube channel, Kalinga TV has issued a clarification over the issue. The clarification says that the said show ‘Chit Chat’ was shot 9 months ago and since the show’s theme is to promote emerging artists from the Odia film industry, they provide ample freedom to the featuring actors to discuss myriad topics in their show.

The channel has further stated that they had no intention to promote rape via the show and following the complaints, they have now removed the said videos from all their social media platforms.

Kalinga TV’s clarification, however, has failed to convince most of the users on social media. Twitter users from Odisha have stated that not only the clarification sounds superficial and insensitive, it also shows that the TV channel does not screen their content before telecasting.

The show Chit Chat airs every Monday at 9.30 pm on Kalinga TV. The above-mentioned episode was telecast last year and was recently re-telecast. The episode features a conversation between Odia actors Sujit Paikaray and Pupul Bhuyan.

Galwan Valley: Buffer zone established at clash location, Indian, Chinese forces remove temporary structures, reports suggest

Amidst escalated tensions between India and China at the Line of Actual Control (LAC), the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) personnel have retreated about 2 km from the site of the violent clashes in Galwan Valley in Eastern Ladakh, reported The Hindu.

As per the report, India had earlier matched the Chinese troops with temporary structures and bunkers and was in ‘eyeball to eyeball position.’ Following the high-level meeting between the Commanders on both sides on June 30, a survey was conducted to verify whether China acted upon its assurances. Physical verification reportedly revealed that temporary structures were removed by both the sides from the site of violent confrontation in Galwan Valley.

As per the June 30 plan, de-escalation was to take place at critical sites such as Galwan, Pangong Tso, and Hot Springs. Once de-escalation took place in the said areas, a similar course of action would be implemented in ‘depth areas’ such as Depsang plains. Earlier, China made new claims about its stake in the Galwan Valley. Foreign Ministry of China had stated that the Valley was located on the Chinese side of the Line of Actual Control. As per reports, Special Representatives from India and China are scheduled to meet and find feasible solutions to the border crisis.

Journalist Shiv Aroor has also shared that latest imagery shows that re-location has taken place on both sides at the Galwan Valley Patrol Point 14 and a buffer zone has been established to avoid confrontation between troops. Aroor, however, added further that no change in current positions has taken place in Pangong Tso area.

India-China Standoff

About 5000 Chinese army personnel, under the garb of a military exercise, had diverted their movement towards the Indian side of the LAC (Line of Actual Control) in Ladakh. The current standoff began on May 5-6 and has been continuing all along the LAC up to Sikkim. The Indian Army had matched the level of their counterparts and had stopped them from conducting movements in several areas.

On June 15, around 20 Indian soldiers, including a Colonel were killed when Chinese troops had attacked with stones, batons, and barbed wires. In fierce combat that took place on extremely hostile terrain, 20 Indian soldiers had lost their lives to injuries and exposure. China is believed to have suffered 43 casualties but the communist state has been reluctant to confirm the number of casualties it suffered.

They removed the hoardings themselves: Lucknow Police confirms after PETA India claims no Maulana took an offence on anti-goat slaughter poster

A day after the animal rights organisation, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animal) removed hoardings in Lucknow after Maulanas said anti-goat slaughter hoardings ‘hurt their religious sentiments’, PETA had claimed that they did not agree to removal of hoardings.

“PETA India’s billboard is up in Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Kolkata and Mumbai & we look forward to it being put up again in Lucknow. PETA India has not agreed on the billboard removal, as there’s nothing offensive about kindness,” it tweeted along with the image featuring the goat which offended the Maulanas. In its tweet, PETA did not specify why exactly the hoarding was removed in Lucknow and on whose instructions.

OpIndia reached out to Qaisarbagh Police station where the SHO confirmed that contrary to its claims, PETA has removed the hoardings itself. PETA had claimed that they are not in favour of removal of hoarding, leaving it open to interpretation.

PETA ‘Turn Vegan’ hoarding controversy

Last week, ahead of Bakri Eid which will be celebrated later this month, PETA had put up a hoarding in various parts of Lucknow which displayed a huge picture of a goat and read – “Mai Jeev Hoon, Maans Nahi. Hamare Prati Nazariya Badlen, Vegan Bane” (I am a living being and not just meat. Change your view towards us and become a vegan).

However, Islamic clerics opposed the same as it ‘hurt their religious sentiments’. Maulana Khalid Rashid Firangi Mahali, President of the Islamic Centre of India, had even complained to the Lucknow Police Commissioner demanding the removal of PETA’s hoarding. The Maulana objected to the hoarding which placed a photo of the goat before the festival of Bakri Eid.

“Why such hoarding is being put up just ahead of the festival? It seems that these hoardings were deliberately put up in a mischievous attempt to hurt Muslim sentiments,” the maulana objected.

Qaiserbagh Police also reportedly got two complaints demanding the removal of the hoarding.

Later, PETA removed the hoardings in Lucknow.

After Coronavirus pandemic and swine flu, a city in China now issues warning for bubonic plague

On Sunday, China had reportedly announced a level III warning in Bayan Nur in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, following a suspected case of bubonic plague, a deadly bacterial disease. The case was reported on Saturday and local health authorities had informed that the warning period would continue till the end of the year.

Local health authorities in Bayan Nur conceded that there was a high risk of the bubonic plague spreading in the city. They also urged people to report abnormal health conditions immediately for self-protection. Also called the black death, bubonic plague is spread by rodents and can kill a person in less than a day, if left untreated.

Last week, state-owned Xinhua news had reported two confirmed patients of bubonic plaque in Khovd province of Western Mongolia. Reportedly, they consumed marmot (a wild rodent found in the region) meat and came in contact with about 146 people. The patients were treated at separate hospitals. One of them was a 27-year-old man and the other was his 17-year-old brother. Last year, a couple had died of bubonic plague in Bayan-Ulgii of Western Mongolia after consuming raw marmot meat. As such, health officials have now cautioned people from not eating marmot meat.

New swine flu virus with ‘pandemic potential’ in China

Amidst the Coronavirus pandemic that had infected more than 1 cr people and killed over 5 lacs worldwide, researchers had reportedly found a new strain for swine flu in China which possesses genes of pandemic potential. Even though the flu virus was transmitted from pigs, scientists feared that it could mutate and facilitate human-to-human transmission. A study found that about 4.4% of the general population had already been exposed to the new strain of the Swine flu virus. While researchers had noted that the new strain from swine flu was not an immediate problem but had the potential of a global outbreak and thus required close monitoring. Professor Kin-Chow Chang observed, “Right now we are distracted with coronavirus and rightly so. But we must not lose sight of potentially dangerous new viruses. We should not ignore it.”

Kaushalendra Pratap Singh, an injured station officer of Bithoor police station, has described the incident explaining how and why things went south for UP Police. The officer has told how the moles in the police force led to the massacre of eight police officers.

According to the reports, Singh, who was injured in the violent encounter specifically told how the third team from the local Chaubeypur police station did not fire even a single bullet at the Dubey’s gang. He said that while the other teams were outnumbered and lying down in the pool of blood, Vinay Tiwari’s team stood mute and Tiwari himself fled. The station head Inspector Vinay Tiwari was suspended on Saturday, and the whole police station is under investigation.

In the video, Singh said they could not see anything as the village was under blackout. “Bullets began flying from rooftops and we could not spot the snipers,” he added. The local police team was aware of the topography of the village. They took the whole team to the fortified house of Dubey. While Inspector Vinay Tiwari fled from the scene, the rest of the team stood mute watching the bloodbath. Tiwari ordered his men not to use their guns. While the team from Chaubeypur police station stood at the safe distance while two teams, one from Bithoor and other from Shivgarh, faced the gangsters’ wrath.

Singh suffered bullet injuries and he is currently under treatment at Regency Hospital in Kanpur. He was brought unconscious and regained consciousness on Sunday, after which he narrated the sequence of events. He said, “At around 12.30 am on Thursday, I and a team set out for a raid after a call from Station officer of Chaubeypur. At 1 am, we reached the village and got down from our vehicles and marched forward. As soon as we walked 100m, an earthmover strategically placed on the road, stopped our movement.”

The trap was already laid

Singh said that Dubey had placed a JCB to block the road. The police team somehow managed to cross it. He said that they were unaware of the trap and continued to march towards the house. As soon as they reached the place, bullets began to rain from the rooftops, and police officers start to fall. Many of the teammates ran for cover. They opened fire, but it did not make much difference as Dubey’s men were firing from the rooftops taking advantage of the altitude. They were able to see the policemen and fired at their heads.

Singh stated that while the attack was ongoing, he saw his colleagues Ajay Singh and Ajay Kashyap being hit by bullets and rushed to save their lives.

Yesterday, Dubey’s aide Daya Shankar Agnihotri had stated to police that Vikas Dubey was alerted from someone inside the police force before the raid. Dubey’s call records have revealed that he was in touch with at least 24 police officials, including some from Chaubeypur and Shivrajpur stations.

Three abandoned luxury cars found

Police have found three luxury cars without number plates while searching for Vikas Dubey. When they investigated to find the owner, it was revealed that one of the vehicles, an Audi, was on the name of local BJYM leader Pramod Vishwakarma. As per the report published in Hindustan, the station in-charge of Kakadev police station said that these cars belong to one Jai Bajpai, who lives in Brahmnagar. Upon interrogation, Bajpai has stated that his family had recently attended a wedding where Vikas Dubey was also a guest and fearing police investigation, they had left the cars near a friend’s house as they were not in their names. One of the cars, an Audi, has been bought in the name of a local BJYM leader Pramod Vishwakarma.

Telangana: Doctor alleges hospital kept her hostage over nonpayment of bill for coronavirus treatment, releases video

A government doctor in Telangana who contracted coronavirus while treating patients was reportedly held hostage by the private hospital where she was undergoing treatment over nonpayment of bill.

In a video shared by journalist Oishani Mojumder, the woman can be heard crying and saying that she is not getting proper medication. In a letter to the police, the woman, Dr Asra Sultana, who is a Civil Assistant Surgeon at Sir Ronald Ross Institute for Tropical and Communicable Diseases at Nallakunta has alleged that a private hospital where she is undergoing treatment is demanding that she pays of Rs 1 lakh for one-day treatment. She has alleged that the hospital also refused to accept her pleas where she requested that the hospital accepts Rs 50,000 and clear the dues later.

As per reports, Dr Sultana attended coronavirus patients and possible patients till June 18. However, after she developed symptoms and she herself tested positive, she isolated herself at home. She suffers from diabetes and hypertension as well.

In a letter addressed to the SHO, Dr Sultana wrote that the hospital did not give her proper medicines and alleged that the nurses were irresponsible. She said she paid Rs 40,000, but as she did not have the remaining amount the hospital detained her for several hours until her brother, who is also coronavirus-positive, came and paid the remaining amount. “Eventually we paid Rs 1.19 lakh for a day’s treatment at the hospital,” she writes in her complaint.

Dr Sultana got admitted to a private hospital in Chaderghat on July 2. She alleges that the hospital charged her Rs 1.15 lakh for one-day treatment. However, she requested the hospital to reconsider the bill amount as she is a frontline worker helping the fight against coronavirus. “But they did not agree. A day later, the bill was increased to ₹1.4 lakh,” she said.

She was finally allowed to leave after she paid Rs 1.3 lakh on July 3. In a statement released by the hospital, the hospital said that Dr Sultana was billed for the services and medicines given to her during her stay at the hospital.

Coronavirus in Telangana

Telangana is one of the worst affected states for coronavirus outbreak. A study by Professor Shamika Ravi has revealed that Telangana is a combination of exponential rise in daily new cases and very poor testing which is as low as 19 confirmed cases per 100 tests.

She has consistently, through her studies, maintained that Telangana needs to significantly increase its testing and have more efficient contact tracing. Her study has revealed that Telangana has one of the least amount of testing and fasted infection growth rate in the country.

As of June 26, Telangana was doing as low as 1802 tests per million citizens. Only state with lesser tests than Telangana is Bihar, which is not fairly as poorly in terms of coronavirus containment as Telangana is.

As of Monday, Telangana has 10,904 active cases with 12,703 recovery. Overall, Telangana is 6th worst affected state in the country in terms of coronavirus as of 6th July 2020.

Despite shrill Rafale campaign, Rahul Gandhi has attended zero sittings of Parliamentary Committee on Defence

Former Congress President Rahul Gandhi has not attended a single sitting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence in the current Lok Sabha. Members of such committees are appointed for the duration of a year and are tasked with the responsibility of reviewing bills pertaining to the department concerned apart from reviewing its annual reports and other related matters.

Since the constitution of the Committee in September, following the reelection of the NDA into power, Rahul Gandhi has not attended a single sitting of the Committee. The Committee has had 11 sittings thus far. The last one was on the 12th of March, 2020.

It is pertinent to mention here that for someone who went to such lengths to cast aspersions on the Rafale Deal and invented controversy where none existed, he would be more interested in issues related to defence. However, that does not appear to be the case here and all his overbearing interest in defence appears to have vanished entirely the moment election results were declared. Rahul Gandhi had fought the entire Lok Sabha election last year, and the assembly elections the previous year, only on one agenda, inventing scam in the Rafale deal, but he seems to be uninterested in discussing matters in the defence department under which the deal comes under.

The amount of interest Rahul Gandhi has displayed in attending the sittings of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Defence appears proportional to his interest in the Rafale Deal since election results were declared. The scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty has hardly ever mentioned the Rafale Deal after his party suffered a crushing defeat in the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections.

The absence of Rahul Gandhi in the sittings of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of Defence combined with his sudden lack of interest in the Rafale Deal only further confirms that he himself never believed there was any wrongdoing in the deal. The entire charade was mere petty politics ahead of elections even risking Indian national security and interests.

During its sittings, the Committee discussed matters related to procurement policy, defence research and development, defence public sector undertakings, demands for grants, welfare for ex-servicemen and other important matters. It is expected of elected leaders of our Parliament to pay close attention to these matters.

These are important jobs that they are elected to perform. It is why citizens do not mind too much when Parliamentarians are accorded privileges that are not available to the general public. However, it is quite clear that certain parliamentarians perceive themselves to be too privileged to perform their most fundamental duties.

It is indeed a matter of grave concern that the second in the chain-of-command of the primary opposition party does not even bother to attend such sittings. The absence of Rahul Gandhi assumes particular significance when defence deals are one of the issues that his party made the cornerstone of its election campaign on his instructions.

As it turns, absence in the sittings of the Parliamentary Standing Committee he is appointed to has become a longstanding habit of Rahul Gandhi. During the first term of the Modi Government, he was appointed to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs in each of the five years. Out of the combined 86 sittings of that Committee, Rahul Gandhi attended only 9.

In 2014-15 and 2018-19, Rahul Gandhi did not attend a single sitting of the Committee. 30 sittings of the Committee occurred in these two years. He attended 5 out of 23 sittings in 2017-18, 3 out of 17 in 2016-17 and only one out of 16 in 2015-16. Thus, it only demonstrates that such callousness with regards to his duties has become the hallmark of his performance as a Parliamentarian.

Recently Rahul Gandhi has taken great interest in the India-China standoff. He has been regularly attacking the Modi government accusing that India has surrendered areas to China during the recent clash at LAC in the border. He has been questioning the stand of the Indian defence forces, and he has been criticised for that not only by BJP leaders, but even by his own party leaders like Milind Deora and alliance leader like Sharad Pawar. But while Rahul Gandhi has been overactive on commenting on the India-China clash, he had neglected the standing committee meetings of the External Affairs ministry when he was a member of the same.

In a first in the world, Indian Railways sets up solar power plant in Madhya Pradesh to run trains

In a significant development, Indian Railways has set up a solar power plant in Bina in Madhya Pradesh to power the Railway overhead lines that power the electric locomotives. According to Railway officials, this is the first time in the world that solar power will be used to run trains.

While Indian Railways, and other railway networks in the world, have been using solar power, they are mainly used to fulfil the electricity requirements of stations, residential colonies and offices etc. Indian Railways has also installed solar power panels on the roof of some coaches, which supply electricity for lights in the coaches. But till now, no Railway network has used solar power to actually run trains by powering the locomotives.

The 1.7 megawatt solar power plant has been set up as a pilot project by Railways in collaboration with Bharat Heavy Electrical Limited (BHEL) on Railway land near the tracks in Bina. The plant will have stepped up voltage of 25,000 volts through transformers to be fed to the overhead power lines of the Railways to power the traction system of the locomotives. The feed from the plant has been synchronised with the 25kV Railway Overhead Line. The solar plant will generate DC electricity which will be converted into AC through an inverter and will be set up into 25KV AC energy through a transformer. The solar plant will generate 24.82 lakh units of electricity annually. Railways hope to save Rs 1.37 crore annually from this plant in power bill.

According to reports, the solar panels were provided by BHEL for free. Railway officials have said that they plan to install solar power plants with a total capacity of 3 Gigawatts. These power plants will directly feed the traction power for locomotives. The plants will be completed in 2-3 years, and tenders have been already invited for the same. The 1.7 MW Bina plant was set up on an experimental basis to prove the technology ahead of the larger 3 GW solar power plant. The official said that extensive testing is going on for the same.

Foundation for the project that was laid in November last year, and testing on the solar plant started last month after completion of its set up. The complete design of the plant has been done by BHEL in consultation with railway engineers.

In video clips that has now gone viral on social media, the Tibetan community living in Manali was seen cheering for the Indian army. The soldiers were greeted with Tibetan flags, white scarves, and prayer fumes of fragrant herbs. The community members were seen heartily welcoming the Indian army convoys that were en route the border. The Tibetan flag assumes significance as it is believed to bring goodwill, peace, strength, and wisdom.

Several other videos of people in Manali cheering for the Indian armed forces were shared by social media users.

India-China Standoff

About 5000 Chinese army personnel, under the garb of a military exercise, diverted their movement towards the Indian side of the LAC (Line of Actual Control). The current standoff began on May 5-6 and has been continuing all along the LAC up to Sikkim. The Indian Army had matched the level of their counterparts and had stopped them from conducting movements in several areas. As per the ANI report, Indian forces had also been airlifted from other high altitude areas to the Eastern Ladakh sector.

On June 15, around 20 Indian soldiers, including a Colonel were killed when Chinese troops had attacked with stones, batons, and barbed wires. In fierce combat that took place on extremely hostile terrain, 20 Indian soldiers had lost their lives to injuries and exposure. China is believed to have suffered 43 casualties but the communist state has been reluctant to confirm the number of casualties it suffered.
