BJP polling agent brutally assaulted by TMC workers in Howrah as West Bengal votes in the 5th phase of Lok Sabha elections

Reports of violence between Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the BJP are coming out of West Bengal where polling for the 5th phase of the Lok Sabha elections 2019 is underway. Soon the polling began in the Howrah district, a BJP worker named Prashant Sharma was brutally beaten up by some unidentified people in Farsor Road. Sharma was immediately rushed to the hospital as he was bleeding profusely.

Clashes also broke out between the TMC and the BJP cadre in Barrackpore in which BJP candidate Arjun Singh sustained injuries after being attacked.

The scuffle reportedly started when a woman in Amtala’s Mohanpur complained to Arjun Singh about her son, a BJP polling candidate, was not allowed to enter the polling booth and could not be found later. She alleged that the TMC workers threatened that they would be murdered after May 23. Hearing the grievance of the woman, Singh helped locate her son named Tapas Das and made him sit in the booth. This led to a scuffle between the workers of both the parties. However, the TMC alleged that Singh was trying to intimidate the voters.

There were also reports of EVMs being vandalised amidst violence in Hooghly in West Bengal. The Election Commission has sought a report from the administration regarding the attack on Arjun Singh. BJP has demanded complete repolling in Barrackpore Lok Sabha constituency alleging rigging and hooliganism by the TMC.

Watch: Rahul Gandhi admits that Congress rule produced unemployment, corruption, problems for farmers, etc

Congress President, Rahul Gandhi, who has somehow got into the habit of putting his foot into his mouth every time he makes a public appearance this time too lives up to his reputation as he addresses a public rally in Bhiwani, Haryana on Monday.

Trying once again to pull PM Narendra Modi for allegedly outpacing BJP veteran leader LK Advani in 2014, Rahul said that the “boxer” Prime Minister was “supposed to fight unemployment, farmer problems, corruption etc but he instead turned around and punched his coach Advani ji in his face, his team Gadkari ji Jaitley ji, then went into crowd and punched small traders and farmers.”

Interestingly, in his hurry to insult the Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi ended up admitting to his party’s mess that was inherited by the Modi government.

The Congress president’s flippant attempt to mock Modi sounded more like submission of his own party’s past shortcoming. What could be understood from Rahul’s statement is that when PM Modi came to power in 2014, he had to undertake several problems like unemployment, corruption, farmers issues, which were left unattended by the outbound Congress government.

Rahul Gandhi accidentally throws light on the adverse conditions the Congress party had left the country in before Modi picked up the reins in his hands.

This is not the first time Rahul has used this vile jibe to denounce the PM. Earlier too, while addressing a rally in Maharashtra, Gandhi attacked PM Modi making a veiled reference to allotting of the Gandhinagar seat, which traditionally belonged to senior BJP leader L K Advani, to BJP President Amit Shah for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Rahul Gandhi said that Narendra Modi hit senior BJP leader L K Advani with shoes and pushed him off the stage.

If this was not disgraceful enough, Rahul was seen repeating the same disgraceful remark the very next day in his Hardiwar rally on April 6.

To put things in perspective, L K Advani, born on November 8, 1927, is 91 years old. In the last five years, he has hardly been involved in active politics. It is only natural for people to retire after decades of active public life and make way for newer faces and leaders.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi cancels Amethi tour

Congress President Rahul Gandhi cancelled his Amethi tour. Rahul Gandhi is the three-time MP from Amethi, a seat his family has held for decades.

Reacting to it, Union Minister and BJP candidate for Amethi, Smriti Irani said that Rahul Gandhi has insulted the people of Amethi. “On voting day, Rahul Gandhi has again insulted the people of Amethi. He is so arrogant that he did not even visit the people who voted for him for three terms. If he didn’t want to come, at least he shouldn’t have lied,” Irani said.

As of 4 pm, 42.18% of voting has been registered in Amethi.

Amethi was one of the most talked about constituencies in the run-up to the ongoing elections, as it is being contested by high profile candidates like Smriti Irani and the Congress President, Rahul Gandhi himself. In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi won the seat with a winning margin of little over 1 lakh votes.

Fearing defeat in Amethi, Rahul Gandhi had decided to contest from the second seat in Wayanad in Kerala, which is considered a ‘safe’ seat because Hindus are in a minority there.

Amethi is one of the high profile seats which has gone to polls today along with Rae Bareli and Lucknow.

Pliant journalists, the entitled Prince, a litany of lies and a whole lot of incompetence

In the last few days, Indians witnessed an event that they all had been waiting for the last 5 years.

Rahul Gandhi, after giving a glimpse of his competence in 2014 in an interview with Arnab Goswami, after which he never gave a political interview other than the interview with his fangirl who was more interested in meeting his ‘Pidi’ rather than asking any relevant questions, finally gave a couple of interviews in last few days.

The interviews were short, not more than 15-16 minutes, but one should be happy with whatever one gets when it comes from the Royals. People at least got a chance to see for themselves whether he has “come of age” like Congress ecosystem had claimed many times in last 5 years or he is still the same incompetent man that they witnessed in 2014 if they not already had made up their mind obviously.

If you want to understand what ‘pliant’ journalism means you should watch these interviews, one of which mysteriously became a text interview. The journalists, I don’t know whether we should use that word for this kind of work, do everything in their capacity to make him look good. They refrain from asking any tough questions, they let him run away with numerous lies, they forget to counter question (which many of them have started saying after PM gave interviews to almost every news channel – how many would you tag as ‘Bhakt or godi media’), and even help him when he falters, sometimes going to the extent of being boorish.

However, as it turned out, for a person as shallow and talentless as Rahul Vinci/Gandhi, even these few ‘fixed’ interactions were enough for the people to see that the prince has not only not “come of age” but has also turned into a blubbering mess who is on a political suicide mission by lying through his teeth and mouthing of platitudes that mean paltry little.

He came across as incompetent, visionless, bitter, liar, spoiled brat – basically everything that a politician should not be.

Let me illustrate with some of the excerpts of the interview because we like to talk on facts and not on someone’s figment of the imagination.

When asked about his pet idea ‘Nyay’, he said“It is about remonetisation of the economy… Tested the model… When the poor get the money, shops and factories would get opened… I keep my promises..”. Such lack of information, lack of intellect, combined with utter lies. But we must counter this. Point by point.

Which remonetisation is he talking about? The liquidity in the market has reached similar levels as before demonitisation. How would shops and factories open by giving Rs. 6000 to every poor person or family? The whole point of giving money is to make sure they can sustain themselves so how would that money help in opening new shops? Where has he tested this model? MP, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Chattisgarh, Punjab, Italy – where exactly have he tested this model? And if he has, can he provide some more details about the same? When exactly has he kept your promise? He promised farm loan waivers to the farmers in the 3 states in the recent assembly polls. he counted the days on his fingers from 1 to 10 and claimed that he will change the Chief Minister if it is not done in 10 days. Has it happened? Have you kept your promise? None of these questions was asked, of course.

When asked about what is his vision for the farmers, he said “the first thing we will do is to talk to them.. we will tell them beforehand how much they are going to get through Kisan budget so that they can plan ahead.. ‘Kanoon banwaya’ to decriminalize farm loan defaults..”.

What was he doing for 70 years or for that matter in the 10 years of the Congress government where he had the same status as Sanjay Gandhi had in Indira Gandhi’s government? Didn’t he get a chance to talk to farmers in those 3650 days? Why were so many committees appointed by his government on agriculture when all he had to was to talk to them?

The money mentioned in the budget is not going to be spent by the farmers but by the government so it does not make any difference to a farmer whether he knows it beforehand or not. At least he should understand how basic governance system works? None of these questions was asked, of course.

On being asked on terror and Kashmir, he said, “terrorism in Kashmir was at its peak in 2004 and we eliminated it completely by 2014.. we conducted panchayat elections.. we gave women bank accounts.. we got the youth with us by showing what a great country India was back then.. we made Pakistan a pariah state, labelled them as terror supporter all over the world..”.

Whether its a lie or his lack of knowledge, my mind is completely blown either way. Is he saying that terrorism in Kashmir was the same in 2004 as it was in the early 90s? Is he saying that he or the Congress government had solved the Kashmir problem by bringing everyone along and bringing this amazing development and vision to the people of J&K? Is he saying he conducted peaceful and fair Panchayat elections (which happened just once in 2011 in 10 years that too in much lesser number of blocks as in 2018, that too with negligible violence compared to 2011) in J&K?

Did he or the Congress government make Pakistan a Pariah state? Did he send them to the brink of bankruptcy? Did he isolate them globally on each and every forum? The Congress government was busy indulging in “Aman ki Asha” at the cost of Indian lives, they were busy looting the nation while our country was being bled by bomb blasts every fortnight. Is he is saying you had eliminated terrorism? How does he even come up with such blatant lies? Does he really have no regard for your credibility or you know the ecosystem would protect you at all costs? Does he remember that he was partying right after the ghastly 26/11 terror attack? None of these questions was asked. None.

On the economy, he said, “Economic miracle that India was has been stumbled”. How bad a memory does this person have? India was a “Fragile Five” economy in 2013 which could have collapsed at any time led by an economist, which has been brought to the fastest growing major economy by a Chaiwallah’s government. The “journalists” kept silent.

On his favourite topic Rafale, he said “I asked people what is PM’s strength, they said his honesty, integrity… I said I will attack his this image itself and tarnish him.. French President said that PM asked him specifically that the contract should go to Anil Ambani.. 30000 crores were transferred to him by the PM..”.When asked on proof on any money trail, he said French Govt. has given a huge tax rebate to Anil Ambani. He has also been given some lands nearby worth some hundreds of crores..”

Where should I begin? All his lies on Rafale have already been exposed multiple times and he repeated some of those lies again with impunity in front of ‘pliant’ journalists. But the shocking part is, he seems to know what is he doing by constantly bringing up Rafale. He knows there is no scam but he wants to tarnish the image of an honest person just because he cannot fight him politically or ideologically, disregarding the needs of the defence forces and national security. Such a sick mindset and he wants to be the PM of this holy land.

An OpIndia report reads:

French Ambassador clarified that a global settlement was reached between the French tax authorities and Reliance Flag in a tax dispute pertaining to the period 2008-2012. He said that it was done as per common practice in tax administration, and it was done as per laws and rules of the country, denying any political influence in the decision.

Earlier, Reliance Communications had rubbished the report saying that the tax dispute with its French subsidiary pertained to the year 2008 and it was settled as per local laws. The company said that “the tax demands were completely unsustainable and illegal. Reliance denies any favouritism or gains from the settlement.” A statement issued by the company said that Reliance Flag settled the tax disputes as per legal framework in France available to all companies operating in France.

The statement added that Reliance Flag was running in operating loss in the relevant period, and the tax demand by France was unjustified. “During the period under consideration by the French Tax Authorities in 2008-2012 (nearly 10 years ago), Flag France had an operating loss of Rs 20 crore (2.7 million euro)”, the company said. They added that “French tax authorities had raised a tax demand of over Rs 1,100 crore for the same period. As per the French tax settlement process as per law, a mutual settlement agreement was signed to pay Rs 56 crore as a final settlement.”

This was not brought up. The journalist kept mum and just accepted the lies mouthed off by Rahul Gandhi.

Another report sums up the Rafale saga perfectly:

Rahul Gandhi once lied blatantly on the floor of the house, claiming that the French President had spoken to Rahul Gandhi personally and told him that there was corruption in the Rafale deal. Later, in a massive embarrassment, the French government had to issue a statement, essentially saying that Rahul Gandhi lied and no such meeting ever took place.

In his desperation to prove that Rafale deal was a scam, Rahul Gandhi even pretended to visit ailing Manohar Parrikar as a courtesy visit. That “courtesy visit” was later turned into a ploy to attack the Rafale deal. Rahul Gandhi used a visit made to an ailing Chief Minister to claim that Manohar Parrikar had himself told Rahul Gandhi that he had some files on the Rafale deal and that there was a scam in the deal. Parrikar, suffering from cancer, had to come out and issue a statement calling out Rahul Gandhi’s lies. In fact, even after Manohar Parrikar lost the battle to cancer, even in death, Rahul Gandhi lied in Manohar Parrikar’s name.

The changing numbers of the “scam” amount, the fact that his allegation of the amount “Modi gave to Ambani” is greater than the entire offset amount, the shoddy audio tape that was thrown out by the parliament, the fact that the Supreme Court itself gave a clean chit to the deal and the fact that he admitted that the Supreme Court had made no observation of ‘chowkidar chor hai’ as he had alleged are all facts that have been put forth a number of times. Rahul Gandhi was forced to apologise.

The journalist just kept mum. Rahul Gandhi, the Prince, was not confronted with any of these details.

When asked whether Rafale is gaining ground among public or not, he said: “when we started 20% of people believed it was a scam, now 67% do”. Even the ‘pliant’ Sreenivasan Jain got surprised but was shut down rudely by the monarch. Rahul Gandhi told him, “yes, that’s our number”. End of story. ‘I will decide what the number is and everyone has to accept that because I decide what is fact or not, what is truth or not.’ The air this entitled prince has can be felt from a distance.

He confirmed his sister’s statement that in UP, Congress is fighting to cut BJP votes rather than to win, on which his sister had made multiple U-turns in just a few hours. He coined another new phrase “Aloo ketchup”. He uttered multiple lies himself and attributed another lie to Narendra Modi by saying that he had promised “Loan Waiver” to the farmers in 2014. After harping on Rafale most of the time, he said the issue in these elections are “Jobs, Jobs, Jobs and Jobs… And Economy (as an afterthought)”. Then why are you harping on Rafale so much if the only issue is Jobs?

He had a smirk on his face most of the time which was bordering on disrespect and contempt for everyone else. Even a staunch leftist like Sreenivasan Jain; who is at least competent in his ideology and propaganda, however wrong that is; seemed uneasy. I am sure it is difficult for any competent person, irrespective of his ideology, to listen to someone of his level and intellect. But the Monarch could not be questioned. Never.

Whatever little doubt people had should have been cleared after these friendly interactions from Rahul Gandhi. He is nothing but an entitled prince who has no vision, no ideas, no ideology, no depth, no knowledge and just wants to sit in the chair that he thinks is his birthright and to achieve that, he will not shy away from lying through his teeth, tarnish someone’s image and make false promises.

But the media… the media will play along. Always.

Congress writes to EC against PM Modi’s comment calling Rajiv Gandhi ‘Bhrastachari number 1’, says its against poll code

Congress has written a letter to the Election Commission seeking action against Prime Minister Modi regarding his ‘Bhrastachari number 1’ (corrupted number 1) comment made on the former Prime Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. In an election rally in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday, PM Modi had said that former PM Rajiv Gandhi’s life ended as ‘Bhrastachari Number 1’.

PM Modi, while addressing an election rally in UP, had stated that Rahul Gandhi’s father was hailed by his loyal courtiers as ‘Mr Clean’ but his life ended as ‘Bhrashtrachari number 1’.

In a letter dated May 5, the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee said that comments made by PM Modi not only violate the Model Code of Conduct but is also an insult to the Barat Ratna awardee Rajiv Gandhi. The Committee has asked strict action against PM Modi and demanded the EC to bar him from speaking at the public rallies.

It is, however, ironic that the demand to act against PM Modi filed by the Congress Uttar Pradesh Committee comes as the Congress National president Rahul Gandhi continues to attack the sitting PM Modi with his ‘Chowkidar Chor Hai’ jibes without having any substantiated evidence to back his claims.

The comments made by PM Modi were apparently in reference to the murky Bofors deal, in which late PM Rajiv Gandhi was accused of receiving kickbacks from the Swedish Manufacturer, Bofors, for the sale of artillery guns to India. Rajiv Gandhi was also accused of presiding over the Sikh Genocide in 1984 and later justifying the horrible atrocity with his statements. He was assassinated by one of the LTTE cadres in 1991.

Al Jazeera – Yes, we stand by our PM when he says ‘Hindus have never become terrorists’

Al Jazeera, which is known for its Hindu hate and anti-India agenda, conducted an interview of a BJP leader, Nalin Kohli while reporting on the Indian general elections 2019.

From the outset, the anchor had all its cards out in the open and was coming out with all guns blazing while talking about the nomination of Sadhvi Pragya from Bhopal and some of the other statements from the Prime Minister of India.

The anchor asked “Your Prime Minister (emphasis on the phrase many times) says that a Hindu can never be a terrorist.. There has been no instance of the same in the history… Do you agree with that?”

Yes. A Vehement yes. A proud yes. Yes, a thousand times.

There is no doubt that some people belonging to Hindu faith have picked up a gun for crimes, but none of them have done it in the name of their faith or Bhagwan. There are many naxals who were born into the Hindu faith but picked up a gun for their left ideology – the ideology of Stalin, Mao, Lenin. There are many insurgent groups in north-eastern states but they have not, never have, never will pick up the gun in the name of Ram, or Krishna, or Shiva.

There are no Hindu groups banned by the UN for their terror activities. There are organizations belonging to left ideology, white supremacy ideology, numerous of them belong to Islamist ideology; but not even a single one which belongs to Hindu or Hindutva ideology. Because of the simple reason that no organization would be supported by the Hindus which talk about killing innocent people in the name of religion or ideology.

Our ancient values do not justify or teach violence. We are very proud of the fact that Hindus spread their culture and ethos in many countries like Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and others but never through violent means. We have achieved this distinction by the sheer prominence that our faith puts on the Spiritual world, rather than on the materialistic world.

The likes of people who rush to paint Hindus as terrorists have taken away many things from us Indians in the past- our wealth, our resources, our inventions, our knowledge, our lives – but we will not allow them to take away this moral high ground we have achieved by the sheer resilience and belief in our teachings. No matter how hard they try, we will not let them drag us down to their level and equate’ all-inclusive’ faith with all the other hate spreading ideologies in the world.

So, yes, we stand behind ‘Our’ Prime Minister 100 percent. And if they are too shallow to understand what he said then it’s their problem, really. India has stopped looking at the things from your prism since 2014 and we have no plan to go back to the old ways.

The anchor asked “You have given a ticket to a terror accused. She is out on bail but is still facing a trial in your courts, so how do you explain that?”

Well, Mr Mehdi Hasan, she has already been exonerated from the grave MCOCA charges. The National Investigative Agency (NIA) has given Sadhvi Pragya a clean chit. She was the victim of a vindictive Congress government trying to concoct the Hindu terror theory while exonerating real terrorists. An insider bureaucrat had spilt the beans on the conspiracy. A Congress leader had forced him to concoct Hindu terror. He was told ‘people are willing to drink Rahul Gandhi’s urine, and you can’t even do this much?’ when he refused to be a party to the conspiracy.

We Indians understand our country much better than you and are aware of the way fabricated ‘Hindu Terror’ theory was created. So we don’t need a lecture from you on the ethics and morality, especially from an organization which itself is the front face of Wahhabi ideology and spew venom against Hindus every moment.

You, Mehdi Hasan, introduced Sadhvi Pragya as “Extreme Hindu Nationalist”.

What is so extreme about her? Which of her statements have made you reach this conclusion? Has she talked about violence against any other religion? Has she spread hatred against any other religion?

Just because she dresses in a certain way, she becomes extremist. Just because she loves her religion and is proud of it, she becomes an extremist. Just because she is not apologetic about being a Hindu, like you want, she becomes an extremist.

We are done with the labels that you want our leaders to tag with. We do not care about your opinion anymore. We will not be apologetic about our Hindu identity and Hindu ethos anymore. We are the oldest continuing civilization of the world and are proud of our ancient culture and teachings. Deal with it.

If we would have paid heed to your propaganda and labels, we would have lost the chance of choosing the best leader India has had in a long, long time. Similar labels and questions were being thrown at him by the likes you in 2014. “How can BJP announce someone with riot charges as its Prime Ministerial candidate”; “Narendra Modi is anti-Muslim, an extreme Hindu Nationalist”.

I cannot even begin to imagine what would have happened to the country if he would not have been elected with a full majority in 2014. But that is what the likes of you wanted. You have been a sore loser since 2014 and you will be a sore loser even after 2019. Try and find your inner peace. This hate is never going to take you far.

So, good luck in spreading your propaganda, Al Jazeera, and please leave us alone. We do not need sermons from the supporters of a violent ideology that has become the source of most of the terrorist activities in the world.

PM Modi slams ‘Speedbreaker’ Mamata Banerjee for playing politics over Cyclone Fani

While addressing a public meeting in the Tamluk district of West Bengal, PM Modi trained guns at the TMC chief Mamata Banerjee for her refusal to have a review meeting with him to assess the damage caused by Cyclone Fani in West Bengal.

Speaking at the rally, Pm Modi said, “Speedbreaker Didi has tried to play politics even on Cyclone Fani. I tried to get in touch with her but she is so arrogant that she refused to talk to me. I thought she’d get in touch but she didn’t call. I was anxious for the people of Bengal so I tried once again but she refused to talk even second time.”

The PM asserted that he is aware of the destruction of cyclone Fani in West Bengal and all agencies are working on relief and rescue. He mentioned that Mamata Banerjee is trying to politicise the natural disaster.

Mamata Banerjee was earlier seen claiming that PM Modi has talked to Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik but has not bothered to call her. It was later clarified by the PM’s office that it was Mamata who had not responded to two phones calls from PM Modi.

PM Modi had visited Odisha earlier today where he had conducted an aerial survey of cyclone-hit areas and had held a review meeting with CM Patnaik and state officials. It was revealed by PMO that the Mamata government had declined the PMO’s request for a similar meeting in West Bengal.

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee was recently found confronting people for chanting ‘Jai Shri Ram’ slogans while her convoy was passing by. PM Modi said, “Didi is so frustrated these days that she doesn’t even want people to talk about God. She is arresting and jailing those who are shouting chants of ‘Jai Shri Ram’.

Modi also talked about the recent decision by the United Nations to put Jaish-e-Muhammad chief Masood Azhar on the global terrorist list. Modi said, “It is a matter of pride for India and a huge victory against the terrorists that after sustained efforts, Masood Azhar has been designated as a global terrorist by the United Nations. However, Didi doesn’t find it worth commenting.”

The Battle for Barrackpore, West Bengal: Why the seat is important for both BJP and TMC

In the 5th phase of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, 7 seats from West Bengal went into polls. While violence and rigging occurred sporadically as expected, the BJP candidate from Barrackpore, Arjun Singh, was attacked by goons associated with Trinamool Congress.

Singh had jumped ship earlier this year in March to join the BJP. According to reports, he was hopeful of receiving a ticket from Barrackpore but was denied by Mamata Banerjee. The Trinamool candidate, instead, is Dinesh Trivedi, another senior leader of the party. Singh is now contesting the Lok Sabha elections from Barrackpore on a BJP ticket.

Singh’s departure from Trinamool exposed the growing rifts within the party. While Mamata had declared that there were no hard feelings among people for not receiving tickets for the elections, it’s quite evident that it is certainly not the case. The rise and rise of BJP in the state have given these disgruntled leaders a viable alternative where their efforts are given their due.

The former Trinamool leader, who is the sitting MLA from Bhatpara, was an important asset to Mamata Banerjee. He is known to have a great influence from North Kolkata to Nadia and has important local connections. In 2014, he worked hard for Dinesh Trivedi who went on to win from Barrackpore.

Singh had won the Bhatpara Assembly seat four consecutive times as a Trinamool candidate. He is known to be extremely popular among the Hindi-speaking people in the state.

If people are to be believed, Mamata Banerjee’s appeasement politics contributed to his defection as there was much angst on the ground against such policies. After quitting the party, Singh had very harsh words to offer to the TMC supremo.

“I gave 30 years to Mamata Banerjee. I was shocked at her comments on the Pulwama terror attack. Her statement has shaken the country. When the Indian Air Force carried out the strike, she demanded the body count of terrorists. If a leader does not have national interest on her mind then she cannot do any good to her voters,” Singh had said. “Earlier the TMC used to stand for Maa, Mati, Manush, now it is only money, money and money,” he had also said.

The Battle for Barrackpore has long-term implications for the future of West Bengal politics. Should Singh succeed in winning the seat, it would augment his already elevated position in the BJP. It could further lead to a string of local Trinamool leaders jumping ship. His success could also inspire other disgruntled leaders within the party to look for greener pastures in the BJP. Therefore, it is an important seat to win for both parties.

Arjun Singh’s candidature is also a reflection of BJP’s strategy in West Bengal. While the state unit of the party lacks a leader that commands anywhere near as much popularity as Mamata Banerjee, the BJP is slowly eating away at her base by inducting local strongman within the party who enjoy considerable popularity within their own area or constituencies. Mamata is particularly nervous as her organizational strength is being weakened by the continuous defections. Thus, the Barrackpore seat, in certain ways, is a litmus test for BJP’s strategy in West Bengal.

600 foreigners including 200 Islamic clerics expelled from Sri Lanka, visa restrictions on religious preachers tightened

On Sunday, a minister in Sri Lanka said that ever since the Easter Sunday attacks in Sri Lanka, the country has expelled over 600 foreign nationals from the island nation, which includes about 200 Islamic clerics. The Sri Lankan Home Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardena said that the clerics have been fined and expelled from the country for overstaying their visa. The clerics have however entered the country through legal means

“Considering the current situation in the country, we have reviewed the visa system and took a decision to tighten visa restrictions for religious teachers,” said Abeywardena, adding “Out of those who were sent out, about 200 were Islamic preachers.”

The minister did not reveal the nationalities of those who were expelled, however, the police have revealed that the expelled foreigners have come from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Maldives and India.

“There are religious institutions which have been getting down foreign preachers for decades,” Abeywardena said. “We have no issues with them, but there are some which mushroomed recently. We will pay more attention to them.”

Following the Easter Sunday attacks, the government is overhauling the country’s visa policy to prevent foreign clerics from radicalising the locals in order to prevent a repeat of the April 21 suicide bombings.

Sri Lanka has currently imposed a state of emergency giving the security officials a wide range of powers in order to arrest and detain suspects for long periods. Given the extra powers, authorities have conducted house-to-house searches, and found explosives and radical Islamic propaganda in such searches.

The Easter Sunday bombings have killed 257 people and injured nearly 500. The government has also confirmed a local radical organisation known as the National Thowheed Jama’ath (NTJ) is responsible for the attacks. The group is also closely linked with the ISIS.

Earlier it had been confirmed by authorities that the Easter Sunday suicide bombers had visited India, possibly for training or establishing contact with other radical organisations. The government had also banned radical Islamic preacher Zakir Naik’s Peace TV for spreading Islamic propaganda. A ban on Burqas and other face coverings have also been imposed by a presidential decree.
