Uttar Pradesh: BSP Chief Mayawati not to contest in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls

Mayawati, the Bahujan Samajwadi Party Chief on Wednesday said that she will not contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls, reported ANI.

“I know I can win from any seat, all I have to do is file my nomination and my party workers will take care of the rest. We have a strong alliance with RLD and SP to defeat BJP and it is more important for us to win more seats than for me to win one. I had earlier resigned from Rajya Sabha to keep our movement alive but keeping in mind the current political situation I have decided not to contest LS elections,” said BSP supremo Mayawati.

Earlier Mayawati had made it clear that her party BSP will not enter into any alliance with the Congress. She also said that the SP-BSP-RLD alliance is capable enough of defeating the BJP on its own.

Targetting the Congress, Mayawati had asked the Congress not to mislead people and stated that her party is having no alliance with Congress for the upcoming Lok Sabha election, a day after the Congress had left seven seats for the leaders of the SP, BSP, and RLD, who are part of Mahagathbandhan in Uttar Pradesh.

Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav, Mayawati’s Bahujan Samajwadi Party (BSP) and Ajit Singh led Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) have entered into a pre-poll alliance in UP, which intends to take on the NDA led by PM Modi, which had secured 73 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

The SP-BSP-RLD alliance has agreed on a seat share formula with SP contesting on 37 seats while BSP is set to contest from 38 seats. RLD will be contesting from three seats – Baghpat, Muzzafarnagar, and Mathura.

Goa: CM Pramod Sawant wins floor test, 20 votes in favour, 15 against

Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant who had succeeded the late Manohar Parrikar has passed the floor test in the Assembly after 20 MLAs voted in favour of him.15 MLAs opposed the move.

Sawant addressed the Assembly prior to the Confidence Motion where he spoke about his deceased mentor and expressed his gratitude towards everyone who offered their condolences. He broke down several times during the course of his speech.

The Goa Assembly’s strength has been reduced to 36 from following the death of Manohar Parrikar and Francis D’Souza and the resignation of two Congress MLAs. The BJP has 11 MLAs in the Assembly while the GFP and MGP have 3 each. Independents have another 3 while the NCP has 1. The majority mark currently stands at 19. Pramod Sawant gained the support of all the three independents apart from their allies while the lone NCP MLA along with the Congress opposed the move.

Pramod Sawant represents Sanquelim constituency from Central Goa. In 2017 Goa assembly elections he had defeated Congress candidate Dharmesh Saglani, with a margin of around 2100 votes. He is an Ayurveda Practioner by profession. When the late Manohar Parikkar was bedridden, Sawant was tasked with attending public functions on his behalf.

Mamata Banerjee ‘challenges’ PM Modi and Amit Shah to Sanskrit mantra chanting competition

Post-2014, one remarkable change that has been observed among the opposition parties is that they all have constantly attempted to prove their so-called ‘Hindu credentials’ by openly displaying their love for Hindu culture and traditions. It was first started by Congress President Rahul Gandhi through his temple runs, later picked up by various other leaders of the opposition parties.

This time, the West Bengal Chief Minister has attempted to flaunt her respect for Hindu culture, as she has now invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief Amit Shah for a Sanskrit mantra-chanting competition at Kolkatta.

Addressing a rally on Tuesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee challenged both Modi and Shah to display their Sanskrit knowledge in front of Mamata Banerjee. “Puja does not only mean sporting a tilak, Amit babu and Modi babu. Come have a competition of mantras with me. Let’s see who knows more Sanskrit mantras,” Mamata said, at a rally in Kolkata.

However, the rules and format of the Sanskrit mantra chanting competition are yet to be discussed and finalised. There are no reports yet whether there will be any rewards for the winner of the chanting competition.

Mamata Banerjee, who had, till recently, grabbed headlines for imposing restrictions on Durga Pooja idol immersion as it would disturb Muslim processions has now rushed to prove her cultural credentials.

Last year, Mamata Banerjee’s government had tried to appease Hindus by giving out 10,000 rupees each to the Durga Puja committees in the state.

It is notable here that while Mamata Banerjee now calls for a ‘competition’, her government had tried every trick to block BJP’s rallies in her state. Not only the BJP was stopped from conducting its Rath Yatra, BJP leaders like Yogi Adityanath and Shivraj Chouhan were also hindered by Mamata’s government from addressing the public there.

Squashing the Dragon’s Tail – Recalibrating the Chinese Relationship

Once again, China has lived up to its reputation of appeasing perpetrators of terror. While having the temerity of accusing Dalai Lama of terrorism in the past, China refused to budge to the collective call of the international community on declaring Masood Azhar as a Global Terrorist. The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution 1267 sanctions committee fell flat for the fourth time as China put a technical hold on the said proposal an hour before the deadline in spite of 13 co-sponsors along with India; including permanent members US, UK France and non-permanent members Germany, Poland, Belgium and Equatorial Guinea.

Chinese have always given priority to its geo-political interest and dominance in South Asia over international cooperation and regional peace. In 2016, the International Hague Tribunal had directed China not to violate International Maritime treaty in the South China Sea based on the complaint filed by the Philippines. It was rejected by China as “a piece of paper” blaming the International Arbitration Tribunal acting as a political instrument. Pakistan has been designated as China’s ‘All Weather Ally’, considering the investments worth 20 billion US dollars already made out of the of 46-billion-dollar deal in the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and the prospective Chinese control over the strategic Gwadar Port located in Baluchistan province. Chinese also have a tacit understanding with the Taliban in Afghanistan, not to interfere in each other’s domestic issues. None of the Islamic terror groups has either raised objections or retaliated to the state-sponsored human right violations of the Uyghur Muslims in the western Chinese province of Xinjiang.

With the international community standing in solidarity with India, other actions can be initiated where countries can embark sanctions. Germany and France have already initiated listing Azhar as designated terrorist under a European- India list which in itself will send a strong message to those who harbour and fund terror activities. France has already decided to sanction Masood Azhar at the national level by freezing his assets in application of the Monetary and Financial Code.

With imports worth 63 billion US dollars from China, equating to 16.4 percent of total imports in 2017-18 which was just accounted for around 3 percent of total imports in 2000-01, gives India a leverage which needs to be exploited vis a vis Chinese protection to a non-state actor who has been an internal security threat to India for a long time. In January this year, anti-dumping duty has been in force on 99 products imported from China including pharmaceuticals, agricultural products, animal feeds, oilseeds, milk and milk products, certain varieties of Chinese steel to guard domestic players from cheap imports from the neighbouring country. These duties have been imposed based on recommendations of the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) for five years. This has also introduced a level-playing field for domestic producers. The trade deficit with China has thus reduced in the last 6 months.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in India is expected to be a market of worth 225 billion US dollars by the end of 2020. The internet users in India are expected to reach 59% by 2021 in comparison to only 28% in 2016. We are already the second largest mobile handset market in the world. Many other government initiatives like ‘Smart Cities’ which demand robust IT connectivity and digitization, will further require electronic equipment. China provides nearly 80% of the semiconductor devices used in India though it has only 16% share in the worldwide semiconductor market. Telecommunication infrastructure has largely been procured in India from Chinese companies. Huawei and ZTE are playing significant roles in network management and operations for the big data and telecom operators in India.

The recent arrest of Huawei chief financial officer Meng Wanzhou in Canada highlighted the allegations on Chinese companies lacking on security and suspicion of data theft. Many countries like Australia, New Zealand and Japan have already prohibited their Telecom providers from using Chinese telecom equipment for the fifth generation (5G) cellular mobile network. France which has been vocal among EU nations in protecting it national infrastructure has initiated a bill that would allow retroactive security inspections in the communications networks in France. This is already receiving sharp reactions in the Chinese press considering it to be targeted on Huawei. On more Chinese employee of the company has been arrested in Poland under charges of alleged espionage activities. African Union office located in Adis Ababa discovered data theft between 2010 and 2017 to unknown servers located in Shanghai. It was also reported that microphones hidden in desks and walls were detected from African Union office. They were using Huawei telecommunications infrastructure. British Telecom, Britain’s largest telecom company has announced removing Chinese telecommunications equipment from its 4G cellular network citing MI6 foreign intelligence reports.

In India, Telecom Equipment and Services Export Promotion Council (TEPC) has already voiced its concern to the National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, and asked for restrictions on the use of equipment manufactured by Huawei and by all other Chinese telecommunication companies. In the past, the Indian government had blocked mobile operators from importing Chinese telecommunication equipment but later lifted the ban in June 2010. Department of Telecommunication had recently invited Huawei for 5G field trials in India.

A huge digital market to tap in India, restrictions on such a company which was founded in 1987 by a former military officer of People Liberation Army of China, could be used to commence India’s response to Chinese advocacy in favour of a terror harbouring country. In the changing world paradigm, India’ re-emergence as an economic power, mammoth purchasing potential, civilizational ethos of mutual respect; pose a threat to China especially in the Asian subcontinent. India needs to take a call in recalibrating its relationship with the sole focus on safeguarding national interest.

After France, Germany initiates move to put Jaish chief Masood Azhar in EU terrorist list

Germany has taken the initiative to include Jaish-e-Mohammad chief, Masood Azhar in the European Union terrorist list. As confirmed by diplomatic sources to news agency PTI on Tuesday, Germany has also approached many other countries to put Masood Azhar in the list of Global terrorists in the European Union.

If Germany succeeds, the assets of JeM chief will be seized in 28 countries of the EU. A travel ban to member countries will also be imposed on Masood Azhar.

The diplomatic sources, however, confirmed that though this proposal has been given by Germany, no resolution has been moved so far. They furthered that since the bloc decides on such issues under the principle of consensus, the proposal will be passed only after the support of all the 28 countries of the European Union (EU) to ban the Pakistan-based terrorist.

Earlier, France had decided to freeze all the French assets of Jaish-e-Muhammad leader Masood Azhar. It had further decided that it will be pushing to list Masood Azhar in the European Union’s list of people involved in terror activities.

This decision had come two days after China had blocked the fresh initiative to declare Azhar a global terrorist by the Sanctions Committee of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).

France had decided to put sanctions on Masood Azhar at the national level after his terror group Jaish-e-Muhammad claimed responsibility for the dastardly attack in Pulwama in which 40 CRPF personnel lost their lives. The assailant who perpetrated the ghastly attack was ostensibly trained and indoctrinated by Masood Azhar’s proscribed terror group JeM.

Notably, the P3 nations of the UNSC have tried four times to declare Masood Azhar a global terrorist. Fourteen out of 15 members of the UN Security Council supported the proposal, but each time the move was blocked by China.

The US had stated recently that not declaring Masood Azhar a global terrorist is against regional stability and peace.

A comprehensive research by the govt on extra marital affairs could happen thanks to Madras HC. Read why

After successfully defining ‘Sandals’ and ‘Chappals’, the Indian Judiciary is now on a new hunt to discover what really causes people to indulge in extra-marital affairs.

According to a report by Live Law, a bench of the Madras High Court earlier this week has asked a set of twenty questions to Central and State Governments, to ‘find out’ the reasons to why people resort to illicit relationships despite being married.

Terming extra-marital relationship as a ‘dangerous social evil’, a division bench comprising Justices N Kirubakaran and Abdul Quddhose observed that clandestine relationships such as extra-marital affairs are leading a rise in the number of heinous crimes across the country.

A large number of these killings are being done by either husbands or wives to eliminate their cheating partner or paramour or even children, observed the court. The bench also observed that murders are also being committed by husbands or wives in order to continue their affairs with their respective paramours.

The bench further wanted to know whether TV Serials, cinemas, economic independence of Spouses, social media, westernisation, alcohol, nuclear family system, non-teaching of moral/ethical values in schools, forced arranged marriages, more public exposure of working women and their mingling with office colleagues, had an effect on people indulging in extra-marital affairs.

The bench made these observations while setting aside an order by the police commissioner of Chennai to detain Ajith Kumar under the Goondas Act. Kumar along with five others was booked for attacking a person called Joseph over his dispute with another man named Lokesh. The five accused reportedly attacked Joseph in Ayyanavaram with weapons resulting in instant death.

“Extra-marital relationship is the basic reason for the murder in this case. Marriage in India is based on love, faith, trust and legitimate expectation. The marital relationship is considered to be sacred. However, what is to be sacred is dangerously fast becoming scary shattering families due to outside conjugal relationship,” observed Madras High Court.

While setting aside the detention order for Ajith Kumar on technical grounds, the divisional bench directed the state and the Centre and State Government to respond to a list of twenty questions, which includes a varied number of issues related to illicit relationships by married individuals.

Honesty over dynasty, development over decay: Blog post shared by PM Modi asks people of India to vote wisely

The people of India will soon be participating in the world’s largest democratic process, the Indian general elections, that will decide who will govern us for the next five years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who was chosen in 2014 by the people of India with a thumping majority, has shared a touching, thought-provoking blog post on his website. The blog post, titled, “Institutional respect and institutional contempt- two contrasting approaches” discusses what being done under the garb of governance before 2014 and how the people of India, with each vote, have contributed to change that, re-establishing the ethos of democracy. The blog reads as follows:

In the summer of 2014, the people voted decisively for:

Honesty over dynasty.

Development over decay.

Security over stagnation.

Opportunities over obstacles.

Vikas over vote-bank politics.

Indians were tired of our beloved nation being in the Fragile Five, where corruption, cronyism, and nepotism made headlines instead of anything positive.

India voted to shed the baggage of the past in pursuit of a better future.

The mandate of 2014 was epoch-making also because it was for the first time in the history of India that a non-dynastic party was blessed with a complete majority.

When a Government works with the spirit of ‘India First’ instead of ‘Family First’, it shows in its working.

Over the last five years, the Indian economy has been the cynosure of the world’s eyes.

India has made remarkable achievements in sanitation coverage (from 38% in 2014 to 98% now), banking the unbanked, financing the un-financed, building futuristic infrastructure, homes for the homeless, providing healthcare for the poor and educating the youth.

Reflective of this paradigm shift is the fact that now, there is a Government that puts institutions above everything else.

India has seen that whenever dynastic politics has been powerful, institutions have taken a severe beating.

Parliament:

The overall productivity of the 16th Lok Sabha was a phenomenal 85%, which is significantly higher than the productivity of the 15th Lok Sabha.

Between 2014 and 2019, the Rajya Sabha’s productivity was 68%.

The Interim Budget session witnessed productivity of 89% in the Lok Sabha and a mere 8% in the Rajya Sabha.

The nation knows the numerical dynamics of both houses. It is clear that when a non-dynasty party in higher number its tendency to work more is visible.

India should ask- why was the Rajya Sabha not working as productively as the Lok Sabha? Which were the forces disrupting the House and why?

Press and Expression:

Dynastic parties have never been comfortable with a free and vibrant press. No wonder, the very first Constitutional Amendment brought in by the Congress government sought to curtail free speech. Speaking truth to power, which is the hallmark of a free press was seen as vulgar and indecent.

The recent UPA years saw the bringing of a law that could land you in prison for posting anything “offensive.”

A tweet against the son of a powerful UPA minister could land innocent citizens in jail.

Just a few days ago, the nation watched with horror when a few youngsters were arrested for expressing their true feelings at a programme in Karnataka, where the Congress is sharing power.

But I want to tell the Congress that no amount of intimidation will change the ground realities. Curbing freedom of expression will not change people’s poor impression of the party.

Constitution and Courts:

When the sun set on the evening of 25th June 1975, it took with it the democratic ethos of India.

A hurried radio address by the then Prime Minister showed the extent to which the Congress can go to safeguard the interests of one dynasty.

The Emergency made the nation a prison overnight. Even to express was to commit sin.

The 42nd Amendment put curbs on the courts, covering the Parliament and more.

It took a groundswell of public opinion to end the Emergency but the anti-constitutional mindset of those who imposed it remained. Congress has imposed Article 356 almost a hundred times, with Mrs. Indira Gandhi herself doing so about fifty times. If they did not like a state government or leader the government was dismissed.

Congress’ contempt for the courts is anyway legendary. It was Mrs. Indira Gandhi who called for a “committed judiciary”, which seeks to make the courts more loyal to a family than to the Constitution.

This pursuit of a “committed judiciary” made Congress overlook several respected Judges while appointing the Chief Justice of India.

Congress’ modus operandi is simple- reject, discredit and threaten. If a judicial verdict goes against them, they reject it, then they discredit the judge and thereafter, talk about bringing impeachment motions against the judge.

Government bodies:

In a telling comment, former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi called the Planning Commission led by Dr. Manmohan Singh, ‘A bunch of jokers.’

This comment gives you a glimpse of how Congress treats government institutions.

Remember the UPA years, when the Congress questioned the CAG just because that institution exposed their corrupt shenanigans like 2G, Coal Scam etc.

CBI became the Congress Bureau of Investigation- it was used time and again on political parties just before crucial parliamentary votes.

Tensions were deliberately created in organisations such as IB and RAW.

A policy decision taken by no less than the Union Cabinet was torn into pieces by someone who was not a member of any ministry and that too, in a press conference.

The NAC was created as a body parallel to the Prime Minister’s Office. And then, Congress talks about institutions?

In the 1990s, a fictitious spy scandal was created in India’s premier space agency ISRO just to suit Kerala Congress’ factional politics. It did not matter to them that a brilliant scientist had to suffer due to that.

Armed Forces:

Congress has always seen the defence sector as a source of income which is why the armed forces never got the respect from the Congress that they deserved.

After 1947, every Congress government has seen multiple defence scams. They began with jeeps and then moved to guns, submarines, and helicopters.

Every middleman is linked to one family.

When a top Congress leader calls the Army Chief a Gunda and is subsequently promoted in the party rank and file, it shows their scant regard for the forces.

When our forces strike at terrorist elements, Congress leaders accuse the political leadership of doing ‘Khoon Ki Dalali.’

When our air warriors strike at terrorists, Congress questions that too.

Congress’ own (lack of) internal democracy and sense of entitlement:

Political parties are vibrant bodies that manifest diverse public opinion. Sadly, Congress does not believe in internal democracy.

If a leader dares to dream to head that party, he or she is shunted out of the Congress.

The sense of entitlement can be seen in their conduct towards routine legal processes. At present, their top leadership is on bail vis-a-vis a major scam. When the authorities seek to question them on their dealings, they do not even bother to reply.

Are they scared of accountability or do they not believe in it?

Think wisely:

From the press to parliament.

From soldiers to free speech.

From the constitution to the courts.

Institutional insult is the Congress way.

Everyone is wrong, only Congress is correct.

As you go to vote- remember the past and how one family’s desire for power cost the nation so greatly.

If they could do it then, they can surely do it now.

Eternal vigilance remains the price of liberty.

Let us stay vigilant and work hard to strengthen the intuitions given to us by the makers of our Constitution.

While Rahul Gandhi talks about ‘saving democracy’, Bengaluru arrests a stark reminder of Congress’ Emergency mindset

The electoral fortunes of the Indian National Congress under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi goes bleaker every day. Owing to the public disenchantment fast transforming into public disgust towards the entitled first family of the Congress which refuses to take any account of Public opinion and continues to stupidly drive the rhetoric-based campaign, they are clinging back to the theme which has served the Family in all these years- Democracy is in danger.

Today, parachuted into the leadership, Priyanka Vadra, wife of Robert Vadra charged with the major corruption during UPA, spoke of stepping into politics as a savior of democracy, projecting her own desperate move as some sort of act of benevolence towards the nation for which the unwashed masses ought to be eternally indebted towards her and the first family. Rahul Gandhi, arriving in Manipur claimed that the political plank for the party will be saving the democracy. This is in continuance to the campaign conjured up by the Congress in association with the communist with fact-less fashionista Arundhati Roy writing that the current regime is worse than Emergency.

Recently, a bunch of young techies were arrested in Bengaluru for raising slogans in support of Narendra Modi during a Rahul Gandhi meet. These fake news creators supported amply by fake news peddlers work on the presumption that people are intrinsically dumbed down and unaware of the past. It is on the premise of short public memory that their propaganda is based. It is therefore important to know and remember our past.

Emergency has been imposed thrice in India. The emergency was declared for the first time in India on 26th of October, 1962 by Jawahar Lal Nehru on the ground of external danger. Since the reason for the imposition of Emergency as put forth by Nehru was war with China, it ought to have been removed post the declaration of ceasefire with China. However, to the demand of the opposition seeking removal of emergency, Pandit Nehru responded in the parliament, “Emergency would last a considerable time, whether there is actual fighting or not.” As Nehru, who was later painted and whitewashed by the family loyalists as the defender of democracy, dragged feet on the question of revocation of Emergency, 1965 was with Pakistan came about.

Eventually, in February 1966, 33 eminent Indians, including ex-judges and vice-chancellors of universities came together, under the leadership of Ex-Attorney General, Mr M C Setalvad urging the revocation of the emergency which by then was four years old, calling the regime a constitutional dictatorship. However, Emergency was revoked only in the year 1968, two years after the war with Pakistan ended.

The second Emergency was imposed by Indira Gandhi on the pretext of external danger due to Pakistan war, on 3rd of December, 1971. This again should legally have been revoked once the war ended, that is on 17th December 1971. Mrs Gandhi, like her father, allowed it to continue till June 1975, when another Emergency was imposed on the 26th of June, 1975. The Constitution did not allow the President of India to impose overlapping Emergency proclamation (one on the account external danger to further be continued under the ground of internal disturbances). Anticipating challenges on account of Constitutional breach, a constitutional amendment (39th Amendment) was hastily brought in inserting Clause (4) to article 352, allowing the President to proclaim overlapping Emergency.

The Third emergency was not only unconstitutional, (earlier two were unjust still constitutional), it was far more tyrannical. The provisions of the dreaded MISA (Maintenance of Internal Security Act), an act enforced during the earlier of the overlapping Emergency, in 1971, were widely and injudiciously imposed to arrest dissenting people. At the time of the passing of MISA act itself, on June 16th 1971, Atal Bihari Vajpai had called the passage of draconian act as, “the beginning of Police state and blot on democracy..the first step towards dictatorship.” Amendments to MISA were made making it further stringent through Presidential ordinances dated October 17th 1975 and November 16th 1975, eventually replaced with amendment Act no. 14 on the 25th of January, 1975. This broadly meant the following:

– Government officer could make an arrest of a citizen basis some information or material with him with the officer was not bound to disclose to the citizen.

– The ground of arrest to be treated as confidential and not to be disclosed.

– The arrested person too is not entitled to the disclosure of the grounds of arrest.

This amendment also removed the applicability of Habeas Corpus to MISA detainees. The state government had the authority to free the detainee after examining the grounds of detention. However, as the matter stood, this was seldom the case. Out of 113 arrests in Goa, 1 was released; in Tamil Nadu, 1 out of 1027; in West Bengal, 1 out of 311; in Haryana, 5 out of 200; in Rajasthan, 8 out of 542; Gujarat, 188 out of 1655; Maharashtra, 98 out of 5473; in UP, not one person out of the arrested 6956 people were released.

Similar was the case of Bihar where 2360 arrests were made under MISA. Around 4600 people were arrested in West Bengal under unnamed sections of MISA, apart from 311 under 16A. In total 34988 recorded arrests were made under MISA and 75818 arrests were made under DISIR during the third Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi.

When the leaders of such a party speak about defending democracy, without having the moral courage to denounce what they have done previously, they are forgetfulness of the citizens. They pretend as if their past never existed counting on the ignorance of the people. India has seen not only one Emergency, but three, all imposed and prolonged for dubious reasons by one party, only to perpetuate its stranglehold on Indian polity.

One may argue as to why hold the current leadership to the mistakes of past leadership. The point is that the current leadership of Congress stands on the evil legs of the past and neither apologizes for its past nor tries to break free of it. Current Congress leadership goes around pledging to take care of those supportive of RSS ideology once in power. The same Congress, Shah Commission observes in its report, arrested thousands under MISA during the Emergency, merely on account of their allegiance to the DMK. They are capable of repeating it again. They pretend that nothing had happened and they lie in connivance of a corrupt media, which whitewash the past for them. They have no guilt either about their tyrannical past nor about their lies about their own past.

As Lysander Spooner wrote:

Those who are capable of tyranny are capable of perjury to sustain it.”

As the compromised media tries to resurrect the Congress as protectors of democracy with all the history telling us otherwise, one is reminded of George Orwell’s famous passage from 1984:

“And if all others accepted the lie which the Party imposed—if all records told the same tale—then the lie passed into history and became truth. ‘Who controls the past’ ran the Party slogan, ‘controls the future: who controls the present controls the past.”

Let us not pass off the arrest of techies of Bangalore as a one-off thing. The danger is grave, real and too close to be ignored.

Congress insults Prime Minister Modi again, says Modi has no ‘vansh’ and hence he is against dynasty politics

Narendra Modi is speaking out against dynastic politics because he does not have children who could take the legacy forward said Congress leader Tariq Anwar.

Anwar said, “Narendra Modi ji shayad isliye bol rahe hai… unka koi vansh raha nahin. Jiska koi vansh hi na ho woh kaise yeh baat keh sakta hai? Yeh to saari duniya mein ho raha hai. Koi aisa mulk nahin hai jahan vansh ko aage nahin badhaya jaata. Aur har profession mein hai. Koi aisa profession bataiye jisme apne vansh ko log nahin badhate ho, aage nahin laate ho. To rajneeti mein bhi aate hai. Unka contribution dekha jaata hai. Modi ji ko aage apna vansh badhana nahin hai isliye woh is tareeke ki baatein karte hai”

Justifying dynastic politics, Anwar said that Prime Minister Modi is taking on the ‘dynastic politics’ because Modi himself has no family to take the ‘legacy’ forward. He further justified that such nepotism is prevalent in all professions and hence nothing wrong in politics either.

Not just Anwar but another senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad too used the same ‘vansh’ jibe against Prime Minister Modi.

Ghulam Nabi Azad could be heard saying, “jinka koi vansh hi nahin ho to woh kya karenge?” (if he does not have any children, what can he do?)

His views were also echoed by Jammu & Kashmir National Conference leader and Farooq Abdullah who said, “what does he mean by dynastic politics? I want to ask you. When an actor and his son becomes an actor, is that a dynastic thing? If a director of a film makes his son director, is that a dynastic thing? If a doctor makes his son a doctor, is that a dynastic thing? I am Shaikh Abdullah’s son, grew up in his house, I have learnt politics from childhood.”

Abdullah forget that while there are no mandatory qualifications required to become an actor or director, a doctor can get his son to become a doctor only after he clears all his exams.

Abdullah, a dynast himself, is the former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir. His father, Shaikh Abdullah was a chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir too. His son, Omar Abdullah, too, has been chief minister of the state.

Congress leaders were reacting to Prime Minister Modi’s dig on Congress’ dynastic politics culture which he shared in a blog earlier today.

Prime Minister Modi has regularly trained his gun on the nepotism and dynastic politics of the Congress party. The current President of Congress, Rahul Gandhi is former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s son, Indira Gandhi’s grandson and Jawaharlal Nehru’s great-grandson. His mother, Sonia Gandhi was also the party president for almost two decades before Rahul Gandhi took over.

PM Modi to interact with ‘Chowkidars’ from 500 different locations through video conferencing

As BJP is surging ahead with its political masterstroke ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign, Prime Minister Modi is all set to take it to the next level as he plans to interact with people from 500 different locations across the country on March 31.

Speaking to the media, senior BJP leader and Union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that Prime Minister Modi, in a video conference will interact with ‘Chowkidars’ from different walks of life. He further said that the campaign has become a “people’s movement” as the ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ hashtag has been tweeted 20 lakh times and had 1,680 crore impressions.

Prasad said Modi will interact with people from different walks of life, including BJP leaders and allies, professionals and farmers, from some “field location” through video-conference.

Attacking the Congress for ridiculing ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign, Prasad said people, who are out on bail and are being investigated, have a problem with this campaign as they have a lot to hide. “If they have nothing to hide, then they should also join the campaign,” he said, describing the campaign as a “positive narrative” of the masses for a “corruption-free” India.

Prime Minister Modi kickstarted the 2019 Lok Sabha election campaign with launching ‘Main Bhi Chowkidar’ campaign on Twitter. PM Modi had tweeted a video to remind everyone that their ‘Chowkidar’ (watchman) is standing firm and serving the nation.

Following this, senior BJP leaders, including party president Amit Shah, and Union ministers prefixed their names on the microblogging site with ‘chowkidar’, which turned out be an instant hit as it became a mass movement spontaneously after lakhs of common people joined the campaign.

Prime Minister Modi seems to have captured the momentum for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections as he has successfully managed to convert condescending, elitist remarks on his humble beginnings thrown at him as ‘insults’ by Congress leaders into a matter of pride.

Interestingly, during the run-up to the 2014 elections, Congress party had made a similar mistake when Mani Shankar Aiyar had taken a dig at Prime Minister Modi’s humble beginning as a tea-seller and said that Modi can distribute tea but can never be the Prime Minister. Modi had then converted that remark as a badge of honour and held ‘Chai Pe Charcha’, discussion forums over tea across the nation as a way to connect directly to voters.
