Several videos of the incident went viral on social media, where Hindu activists were seen getting into a minor scuffle with the police who had come to stop the procession. At least six Hindu activists were reportedly injured.
West Bengal party president and union minister Sukanta Majumdar stated, "Stones rained down on vehicles just for carrying saffron flags. Windshields shattered. Chaos unleashed. This wasn't random, it was targeted violence.
Tensions gripped Ahmedabad's Danilimda neighbourhood on Ram Navami after local hoodlum Wajid Shahehshah stirred trouble by tearing BJP flags and hurling casteist abuses at Hindu workers.
While accusing the ruling TMC government of Muslim appeasement, the BJP added, "No power in the world can stop the Hindus of Bengal from celebrating Ram Navami. This year, the processions will be bigger and more spirited. Jai Shri Ram."
During the meeting, Police Station Incharge Ranjay Kumar said that DJ should not be played at any cost by Hindus in the Ram Navami procession. If DJ is played, not only the DJ will be confiscated, but action will also be taken against the members of the committee. He said that the procession of the village will be taken through the same route which it used to take earlier.
An argument broke out between the mob and members of the procession, which quickly escalated, leading to the stone pelting incident. Members of the Hindu community also resorted to stone pelting in retaliation. Nearby shops were vandalised during the incident and the Eid Market was temporarily shut.
"If people cannot enjoy and celebrate in peace, any festival, even for 8 hours, we will recommend Election Commission of India not hold parliamentary elections in such constituencies," Calcutta High Court said.
