Libya: 23 Jihadis sentenced to death, 14 to life imprisonment for their participation in an ISIS attack

0

A Libyan court has sentenced 23 people to death and 14 others to life imprisonment for their participation in a fatal ISIL (ISIS) campaign that included killing a group of Egyptians and capturing the city of Sirte in 2015, Al Jazeera reported.

One other person was sentenced to a 12-year prison, six were sentenced to 10 years, one received a five-year term, and six others received three-year sentences, according to a statement released by the attorney general’s office on Monday. The statement added that three persons passed away before trial and three others were acquitted. One of ISIL’s alleged bases outside of Iraq and Syria was Libya, and the organisation profited from the ensuing instability and fighting in the North African nation after a NATO-backed rebellion in 2011, according to Al Jazeera.

The armed organisation attacked the opulent Corinthia Hotel in Tripoli in 2015, leaving nine people dead. Subsequently, the group kidnapped and beheaded scores of Egyptian Christians, whose killings were depicted in gory propaganda videos, Al Jazeera reported.

The organisation took control of eastern Libya’s Benghazi, Derna, and Ajdabiya before seizing the key coastal city of Sirte and keeping it until late 2016 as it imposed a strict code of public morals supported by harsh penalties, Al Jazeera reported further.

According to attorney Lotfi Mohaychem, the court condemned three youngsters to ten years in prison each.

Mohaychem said, “As lawyers for the victims’ families, we see the verdict of the court as very satisfying and very just.”

“The court sentenced those guilt was demonstrated and acquitted those against whom there was insufficient evidence,” he added.

ISIL and other organisations took advantage of the anarchy that overtook Libya, following the 2011 uprising that ousted and ultimately murdered longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi.

In the end, soldiers supporting the former Government of National Accord, which was backed by the United Nations, drove the group out of Sirte in December 2016. Two years later, Khalifa Haftar’s forces in the east reclaimed Derna.

In Libyan jails, there are still hundreds of purported ex-ISIL combatants detained, many of whom are still awaiting trial, Al Jazeera reported.

Police, while revealing the details of how the accused was arrested, said that the accused went into hiding after switching off the phone. Police said that technical surveillance was put on him after the accused had called his father.

“After the incident, the accused had fled and went to his relative in Bulandshahr to hide. However, after reaching there, he called his father and after that, the police arrested him through technical surveillance,” police sources said.

According to police, the initial reports suggest that the girl’s head was attacked with a blunt object, which caused the skull to rupture.

“The minor was allegedly killed after being stabbed multiple times and her head being crushed with a boulder in New Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy area,” the police said.

The preliminary post-mortem report of the minor girl revealed that her skull was crushed with a boulder after being stabbed 16 times by the accused Sahil in the Shahbad Dairy area of Delhi on Sunday night, police said on Monday.

WTC final: Ricky Ponting wants India to play Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav against Australia

0

Former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting wants Team India to play X-factor players like Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav in the final of the ICC World Test Championship against Australia if they want to have an advantage over their opponents.

In a recent episode of the ICC Review podcast, Ponting stated that his India playing XI for the WTC final will also contain Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja, with Jadeja primarily serving as a batter at Number six and Suryakumar preceding Jadeja in the middle order.

“If I was them [India], knowing the importance of this game – and you have to win this Test match – I would be going with Ishan Kishan in this game. He provides that little bit of X-factor that you need when you might be pushing for a win in a Test match. Obviously, if Rishabh Pant is fit, he is playing, and he provides that X-factor for India. But with him not being there, and this is no blot on Bharat whatsoever, but I think Kishan just provides that little bit more X-factor, who would do a good job with the gloves but can provide that really high-scoring run rate that is required in a one-off Test match to push for a win,” said Ponting as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.

“I would be going with as many X-factor players as I could and put some real pressure back on Australia,” added the Aussie great.

Kishan and Suryakumar are not Test regulars for India. While Kishan is yet to make his debut in the longer format, he was a part of India’s squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia this year. Suryakumar also played his only Test in this series, scoring eight runs at Nagpur, where Team India won.

However, both players have respectable first-class records. While Kishan has 2,985 runs in 48 matches at an average of 38.76, Suryakumar has 5,557 runs in 80 first-class games, averaging 44.45 runs per game. However, both of them are best known for being powerful short-format batters.

Ponting is also happy to see Ajinkya Rahane make his return to the Indian Test side after good performances in domestic cricket and the IPL.

Rahane, who was India’s Number five until he was dropped in the early months of 2022, had a successful domestic campaign (2022-23) and concluded as Mumbai’s top Ranji Trophy run-getter with 634 runs in seven matches at 57.63. In the most recent IPL, Rahane dazzled many observers with his aggressive stroke play as a top-order impact batter for Chennai Super Kings.

“Jinks (Rahane) has had an incredible IPL as well. It is funny, is not it, how IPL runs can now get you picked back into a Test match squad. Jinks has been on the outer for the last couple of years in Test cricket, but everyone saw how confident he looked and how well he played in the IPL and that was enough to get him back in,” said Ponting.

“He has been there and done it before in Test cricket. It was probably a bigger hurdle for him to climb to get back into playing really good T20 cricket than it is for him to go back and play good Test cricket. His make-up is much more suited to the Test game than it is to T20 cricket. He has rediscovered some confidence and if he does get picked, I won’t be surprised to see him get runs in that Test match.”

“He has always been a really high-quality player and we saw him even with his leadership qualities here in Australia, in that last series to turn things around,” Ponting concluded.

The 15-man Indian squad has three spin bowling all-rounders in Ashwin, Jadeja and Axar Patel. Despite Axar’s all-format consistency this year, Ponting expects India to go with Ashwin and Jadeja because of how the pitch works in the Oval, where the match will be played from June 7.

“I think they will pick Jadeja and Ashwin because Jadeja can hold that No. 6 batting spot. His batting has improved that much that they can pick him as a batter now that might just bowl a few overs if required. There is no doubt that Ashwin is a more skilled and better Test bowler than what Jadeja is, but if Jadeja can hold down that batting spot and then as the game goes on, getting into the fourth and fifth day, if it does start to turn, then you have got that really high-class second spin bowling option if required”, he added.

“Historically, the Oval pitch has been a very good batting wicket. It has generally offered something for the fast bowlers on day one, not a lot. But I have also played some games there where it has turned a lot. If it starts a little bit dry, it can turn a lot,” concluded Ponting.

Australia squad: Pat Cummins (c), Scott Boland, Alex Carey (wk), Cameron Green, Marcus Harris, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Josh Inglis (wk), Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Todd Murphy, Steve Smith (vc), Mitchell Starc and David Warner.

Standby players: Mitch Marsh and Matthew Renshaw.

India squad: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Ajinkya Rahane, KS Bharat (wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umesh Yadav, Jaydev Unadkat and Ishan Kishan (wk).

Standby players: Yashasvi Jaiswal, Mukesh Kumar and Suryakumar Yadav.

After performing Ghar Wapsi and subsequently marrying her Hindu boyfriend Roshan Kunwar, Rukhsana told the media that neither the reversion to Hinduism nor the interfaith marriage was forced on her. She said that she was the one who had proposed marriage to Roshan Kunwar. She further said that she reverted to Hinduism at her will as she was inspired by the sermons of Bageshwar Dham’s Mahant Dhirendra Krishna Shastri.

“I was from the Islam religion. But I liked Sanatan Dharma. Sanatan gives peace and respect to the women,” she said.

“I was inspired to embrace Sanatan Dharma after listening to the program of Baba Bageshwar, (which was held in Patna between 13th to 17th May.) I myself had proposed marriage to Roshan,” she added.

According to reports, Naushin Parveen aka Rukhsana, a resident of Muzaffarpur’s Gijans, met Roshan Kunwar, a resident of Jaipur’s Vaishali. Both had moved to Jaipur to study and were enrolled in the same college. Rukhsana and Roshan became friends but eventually fell in love. The love affair continued for four years before they decided to get married.

The duo decided to communicate their willingness to spend the rest of their lives together with their family members. Roshan managed to convince his family but Rukhsana’s family was dead against their relationship. At this point, Rukhsana also apprised her family about her decision to adopt Hinduism. She told them how she was inspired to adopt Sanatan Dharma after hearing the sermons of Bageshwar Baba. She told them that she was taking the decisions of her own independent volition.

Following this, the duo visited the temple’s priest and expressed their desire to get married. The Ardhanarishwar Mahadev Temple priest helped her perfume Ghar Wapsi by performing a purification ceremony and solemnized her marriage with Roshan Kunwar as per Hindu Vedic rituals and customs.

Bangladeshi Muslim woman meets Bageshwar Dham Sarkar, says she finds peace in Lord Rama’s name

Bageshwar Dham and its Mahant Dhirendra Krishna Shastri have been criticized by the Liberal and Islamist cabal several times for talking about Sanatan Dharma unabashedly. The people of the Muslim community have also been asked to stay away from the Mahant by Muslim clerics. Despite that, some of the Muslim community people are realizing the greatness of Sanatan Dharma stating that Mahant Dhirendra Krishna Shastri is a Godly person and Sanatan Dharma is pure and moral.

On Wednesday, May 24, a Muslim woman from Bangladesh arrived at the ‘Ram Katha’ event of Bageshwar Dham Sarkar in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, and said that she wanted to leave Islam and become part of the Hindu religion. She said that she believed in Lord Rama and that she found peace in chanting his name.

The woman, wearing a burqa, also said that she had been following the Mahant Dhirendra Krishna Shastri on YouTube for several months and wanted to meet him in person. On asking whether was she being pressurized to embrace Hinduism, the Muslim woman confirmed that she had legally come to India of her own will and that she wanted to become Sanatani.

A Muslim from West Bengal had earlier called Baba a Godly Man

This is not the first time when a Muslim girl has expressed the desire to be a part of Sanatan Dharma. Earlier, on May 13, a Muslim woman from the Malda region of West Bengal had attended Mahant Dhirendra Krishna Shastri’s event in Patna, Bihar, and had said that Dhirendra Shastri is a Godly man.

CBI files corruption case against Rolls Royce and unknown Indian public servants for shady defence deals between 2003 to 2012

On May 23, the Central Bureau of Investigation filed a corruption case against Rolls Royce India Pvt Ltd’s director Tim Jones, alleged arms dealers Sudhir Choudhrie and Bhanu Choudhrie, Rolls Royce PLC, British Aerospace Systems and unknown Public Servants and Private Persons.

The FIR has been registered under Sections 120B, 420, and 201 and the Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 13(2), 13(1)(d), 8, and 9 of the PC Act 1988. The case has been filed for alleged kickbacks in the procurement of Hawk 115 Advanced Jet Trainer aircraft for the Indian Air Force and Indian Navy. The case has been filed after six years of preliminary investigation.

Notably, as per the officials, a British court order of 2017 also mentioned the alleged involvement of the middlemen and kickbacks by the company for materialising the deal. As per the FIR accessed by OpIndia, the alleged conspiracy took place between 2003 and 2012 where unidentified public servants “abused their official positions” to procure 24 Hawk 115 AJTs for 734.21 million British Pounds.

Furthermore, they also permitted the licenced manufacturing of 42 additional aircraft by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) against materials supplied by the Rolls Royce company for an additional payment of USD 308.247 million and USD 75 million under the Manufacturer’s License Fee.

Documents retrieved by the Income Tax department were destroyed to evade investigation

In the FIR, CBI noted that the deal was struck in the backdrop of huge bribes, commissions, and kickbacks that were paid by the Rolls Royce company to the arms dealers even though the agreements, integrity pacts, and associated documents of the deal strictly prohibited any such payments to the middlemen.

During the investigation by CBI, it was found that during a survey conducted by the Income Tax Department in 2006-2007, vital documents related to the transactions were seized from the Rolls Royce India office. However, the accused persons destroyed and removed those documents to avoid investigation.

The FIR read, “It is alleged that Rolls Royce plc was involved in bribing Tax officials and other public officials of Indian Government to prevent investigation by Indian Authorities into its Tax Affairs and use of advisors by Rolls Royce and payment of commissions/fees to intermediaries and middlemen. It is alleged that an amount of GB Pound 1.85 Million was paid by Rolls Royce to intermediaries by means of Commercial Contractual Agreements (CCAS) for retrieval of list commission agent/ advisors from IT Department. These documents, were removed/concealed or destroyed by the accused persons.”

Statement of Fact revealed payments to middlemen

In 2012, media reports alleged corruption in the Rolls Royce operations. It led to an investigation by the Serious Fraud Office in London. In a Statement of Fact, the company is said to have disclosed the payments made to the middlemen in connection to the deals done with countries including India, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The company reached a deferred prosecution agreement with the SFO.

The said statement was cited by Crown Court Southwark, UK in a judgment that pointed out that GBP 1.5 million were paid to an intermediary to retrieve a list of middlemen that the Income Tax Department seized during a survey in 2006 to prevent it from reaching the Ministry of Defence as it could have led to the termination of the contract and a probe by CBI.

Furthermore, CBI said in the FIR that Russian Arms companies paid around GBP 100 million to a company named Portsmouth’s Swiss bank account. Portsmouth is linked to Sudhir Choudhrie. The payment was allegedly done for defence deals with Russia for the purchase of MIG jets.

FIR said, “Out of this amount, the companies in the name of Choudhrie’s family namely Belinea Services Ltd, Cottage Consultants Ltd, and Carter Consultants Inc. received GBP 39.2 million, GBP 32.8 million and GBP 23 million respectively between October 2007 and October 2008.”

It added that Bhanu Choudhrie and his son Sudhir Choudhrie are allegedly unregistered Indian agents or middlemen who worked for different companies like BAES and Rolls Royce. They assisted these companies to get contracts for the supply of HAWK aircraft. CBI added that they used “undue influence on Indian public servants to induce the Government of India to approve the deal”.

Notably, between 2003 and 2012, Rolls Royce and the Government of India signed multiple agreements for the delivery of HAWK aircraft that were delivered to both the Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. An investigation into the alleged corruption began in 2016. After six years of investigation, CBI filed an FIR against Rolls Royce, middlemen, and unidentified Indian officials.

Junagadh: 2000 Muslims come to protest against demolition of illegal structures, including dargahs and mazars, approach court after drive continues

On May 27, Junagadh’s local authorities carried out a demolition drive of illegal encroachments amidst protests by up to 2000 Muslims. Many illegal mazars were also demolished in the action carried out against such illegal structures. In response, a local Muslim organisation in Junagadh organised a meeting to determine what all Islamic structures have been demolished by the state government. The meeting of the Muslim community was held at the Narasimha Vidya Mandir after the demolition was executed in Uparkot area of the district on Saturday.

This action by local authorities came almost a week after the Junagadh civic body issued public notices of the demolition of unauthorised structures, including graves, dargah, mazars, and parts of a temple, in the Uparkot fort area.

Wahabbhai Qureshi, a corporator of Junagadh Municipal Corporation, confirmed the news of the meeting held by the Muslim community and said that the demolition was carried out by the government in Uparkot on Saturday morning and later, a meeting of the Muslim community was called in the ground of Narsingh Vidyamandir.

Around 2000 Muslims, including the corporators of Junagadh Municipal Corporation Adremanbhai Panja, Rajubhai Sandh, Ibrahimbhai Qureshi, Wahabbhai Qureshi, Abbasbhai Qureshi, and Aslambhai Qureshi gathered at the meeting. Reports mention that several Maulvis and Muftis also attended the meeting.

After the meeting, the leaders petitioned the local authorities to allow one of their delegations to go to Uparkot where they would see what had been demolished by the government. Now a delegation of 8 leaders of the Muslim community is set to go to the area to inspect the post-demolition site in Uprakot. “The visit will be discussed with the SDM on Monday and appropriate time will be given,” Deputy SP Hitesh Dhandhalya said.

176 illegal mazars, 18 other religious structures demolished

It may be noted that the state government has decided to renovate the Uparkot fort at Junagadh at a cost of 70 crores. Meanwhile, the houses that had been built illegally on the encroached land have been removed. Further, the structures, some of which are religious, were demolished on the night of Friday and Saturday. The said demolition operation was executed in the presence of around 150 policemen.

According to reports, as many as 176 illegal mazars and 18 other religious sites have been demolished so far. The Junagadh District Collector and Inspector General, along with other high officials, were also present during the demolition. As per the local reports, around 8 bulldozers were deployed for the task of demolition in the Uparkot area of the city.

Prior to demolition, Junagadh Provincial Officer Bhumi Keshwala, while talking to the media, had said that all the illegal properties built after 1950 would be demolished. “The work has started without any disturbance. Detailed information will be given only after the complete demolition work is completed,” he was quoted as saying.

It was reported that several people from the Muslim community reached the spot and objected to the demolition process. However, the administration was well prepared and called more police force to control the situation. The entrance to the area and the way to Uparkot were also blocked by the administration.

Muslim community says Court had issued orders to prohibit demolition till the next hearing

A petition has also been filed in the Gujarat High Court by the Muslim community against the demolition at Uparkot. The community has also demanded an immediate hearing in the case. The Muslim community alleged that the High Court had issued prohibitory orders and had said that no demolition work would be carried out until the next hearing on July 24.

The community is also said to have submitted an application to the district collector. The Muslim leaders in the meeting, held yesterday, appealed to all the Muslim community people to maintain peace. The leaders said that they want to attain justice only through the High Court.

It may be noted that the administration had issued a notice to remove the encroachment from this state-protected site a few days back. The fort of Uparkot is very important from a historical point of view.

The fort was first built during the reign of the Maurya Empire and its legacy continued till the reign of the Gupta Empire. However, the fort, which has withstood all the ravages of time, was rebuilt in 1893-94 by Diwan Haridas Viharidas of Junagadh state and has recently been given a lot of attention by the Gujarat government.
