Another set back for Congress : Gujarat working president hands over resignation, joins BJP

In yet another major setback to Congress party, the Gujarat Congress working president Kunwarjibhai Mohanbhai Bavaliya has resigned from the party and has joined BJP.

Bavaliya is considered to be one of the prominent leaders of the Congress and he is also the member of Jasdan legislative constituency. It is said that he was not happy with the leadership of the party. It is said that Bavaliya’s decision to quit the party was a reaction to the Congress’ decision of making his junior Paresh Dhanani the leader of the opposition.

Bavaliya is known to be the leader of the Koli Community and enjoyed huge political success since he won his first elections in 1995 and continued as a member till 2007. He contested in 2009 general elections from Rajkot constituency and won the elections successfully.

In a meeting with the party president Rahul Gandhi recently and had expressed his displeasure. He also reportedly complained how he was deliberately ignored by the state Congress leadership.

In an earlier meeting, he accused both the BJP led government and his own party Congress of ignoring the Jasdan constituency. Interestingly, Congress MLA from Chotila, Rutwik Makwana and former Jasdan MLA Bhola Gohil, who had defected to the BJP during the Rajya Sabha election last year, were also present at the meeting and addressed the gathering.

Nitin Patel, the deputy chief minister welcomed him to the party. According to Gujarat deputy chief minister Nitin Patel, Bavaliya was unhappy with the Congress. Bavaliya is also expected to be a part of the cabinet, as he was promised of a ministerial birth.

It is a big boost to the BJP, as Kunvarji Bavaliya being one of the prominent political leaders in the state, especially from the Saurastra region, where BJP performance was poor compared to other regions of the state. The induction of Bavaliya will be a game changer for the party to consolidate more seats from the region in the next general elections.

Office bearers of the leftist JNU student union found guilty of contempt of court by Delhi HC

The office bearers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) have been held guilty of contempt of court by the Delhi High Court on Tuesday, reports legal website Bar and Bench.

As per the report, the case dates back to 9 August 2017, when the High Court passed an order allowing the students to protest in the campus, with the condition that no protests would be held within 100 metres of the administrative block.

The court had also directed that if any protest ended up happening within the 100-metre radius, the university authorities would be free to seek police help for the maintenance of law and order on the campus.

The students though didn’t seem to have paid heed to that, when the university introduced a new attendance policy, which made 75 per cent attendance mandatory for all courses.

The students, as a result, protested against the move and the administration supposedly agreed to hear their side on 23 February. The report claims that the meeting ended up getting postponed indefinitely, which resulting in protests near the administrative building.

Hence the JNU administration filed a petition in the High Court claiming a violation of the court’s order. As a result, four members of the student union namely President Geeta Kumari, Vice President Simone Zoya Khan, General Secretary Duggirala Srikrishna and Joint Secretary Shubhanshu Singh haven been held guilty.

Besides holding the office bearers guilty, the High Court judge also imposed a fine of Rs 2,000 on them:

The current JNU students union is controlled by the united left alliance which defeating the ABVP in September 2017. The leftist students had, as a result, managed to retain all the four student union seats.

Government forms a territorial battalion of former Army officers for the ‘Clean Ganga’ task

The Territorial Army (TA), a part of Indian Army, which deals with natural calamities and maintenance of essential services in situations where the life of the communities is affected, has now expanded its footprint to clean Ganga with a Composite Ecological Task Force (CETF). The task force comprises of ex-servicemen and will be based in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.

The deadline for the clean-up for this task force is 2020. The government has also allocated about Rs 167 crore to the battalion under National Mission for Clean Ganga, the government body in charge of the Namami Gange programme.

According to the reports, the battalion will comprise of ex-servicemen and will be headed by a Colonel-rank officer, along with eight other officers and 20 Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs).

Specially trained engineers, environmentalists, and scientists will also form part of the battalion. The battalion will be entrusted to not only monitor environmental projects related to the resurrection of the river but will also raise awareness among people to keep the river clean, guard sensitive river areas for the protection of biodiversity, keep a tab on the pollution levels and assist the government in implementing pollution control measures.

Rampant pollution and indiscriminate dumping of industrial and other waste for years have resulted in the Ganga becoming one of the world’s most polluted rivers and unfit for usage in many parts of India. Understanding the importance of safe and clean water, the government had in May 2015 approved Rs 20,000 crore under its ambitious ‘Namami Gange’ – integrated Ganga conservation mission – programme for five years (up to December 2020). Nitin Gadkari had claimed that the result of Ganga cleaning works would be visible on the ground by March next year as the river (water quality) would be 70 to 80% cleaner (from 2014-15 level) by that time.

Realising that cleaning of water bodies needed immediate attention, and aiming at the holistic and overall transformation of water bodies through its proposed projects, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in April 2017 also decided to take personal control of the project, which aims to ensure proper sewage management, industrial discharge management and the beautification of several ghats along the Ganga. Formation of this territorial battalion force is a vital part of the initiative.

Irrespective of all the criticisms faced by the government, they are all set to take up and effectuate this dauntless challenge of cleaning the ‘Ganga’, which now enjoy the same legal rights that are available to all the human beings after the Uttarakhand High Court declared it as the first living entity of India, within the stipulated time frame.

Afghan Sikhs forced to choose between converting to Islam and leaving for India post IS terror attack

Following the devastating terror attack in Afghanistan’s Jalalabad on Sunday which resulted in the deaths of 13 Sikhs, members of the community are now torn between converting to Islam or relocating to India, Reuters has reported.

As reported by Times of India, the terror attack was aimed at the minority Sikhs and Hindus and caused the deaths of 17 members of the communities, including the sole Sikh candidate for upcoming parliamentary elections – Avtar Singh. The responsibility for this attack was taken by the Islamic State.

Following the attack, the Sikh community has expressed concern about their well being. Demography wise, there used to be about 2.5 lakh Sikhs and Hindus in Afghanistan before 1990. Now there are believed to be just 300 Sikh families in the country.

As per Tejvir Singh whose uncle died in the attack, it has become clear that he and his fellow community members cannot live there anymore. As per him, even though the government recognises them, they are targeted for being non-Muslims. He also added that Islamic terrorists won’t tolerate their religious practices.

Another Sikh named Baldev Singh even went on to state that only two options were left for them, “leave for India or convert to Islam”.

Following the attack, many Sikhs have also sought refuge in the Indian Consulate in Jalalabad, with the Indian authorities obliging them with an open invitation to stay as long as they want.

As per an Economic Times report, Vinay Kumar – Indian Ambassador to Afghanistan has stated that India has helped to organise the last rites of the slain Sikhs. The report also claims that India has issued long-term visas to Sikh and Hindus enabling them to stay in India for a long time.

Despite the impending threat and India’s invitation, some Sikhs are adamant that would not leave and called Afghanistan their country.

There is a method to the violent madness of protests: Instigation for petty politics

An Economic Times report states that the fishermen, part of the unified group which participated in protesting against the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi which led to violence, have claimed that they were ‘brainwashed’ into picketing at the district collector’s office. The violence led to the death of 13 people. The fishermen have claimed that the Left-leaning Makkal Adhikaram (People Power), which has been part of protests over Cauvery dispute, TASMAC and Sterlite, instigated the members of their community and coerced them to join the protests.

The fishermen claim that they had decided to protest at the site designated by the police as per the permission given. However, Makkal Adhikaram Association and some lawyers associated with it diverted them towards district collector’s office and engaged in violence. As reported by ET, the fishermen community has written a letter to District Legal Services Authority that lawyers associated with Makkal Adhikaram held propaganda meetings in villages near the Sterlite factory targeting the fishermen where it was planted in their minds that gheraoing the collector’s office was the only way to ensure permanent closure of the factory. The fishermen, in their letter, say that the lawyers roused passions through videos on social media and by directly meeting people at the protest site.

We had earlier written how Tamil Nadu leaders use the weapon of ‘protest’ for political redemption. In fact, actor turned politician Kamal Haasan gave a statement during the Sterlite protests which sounded eerily similar to the narrative peddled by Kashmiri separatists.

We had recently seen how violent protests appear politically motivated. During the Dalit protests which took a violent turn in April this year, social media was abuzz with speculations that the same person who was a Karni Sena activist during the violent protests at the time of the release of the film Padmaavat, was also a Dalit protestor. We had also reported how Aam Aadmi Party workers allegedly wore saffron clothes waved swords outside a mosque as a part of a conspiracy which could have led to communal tensions in the national capital.

This just shows how the political forces are coming together to create an atmosphere of political unrest as a run up to the 2019 general elections.

String of brutal murders continue : BJP worker’s body found floating with limbs tied in West Bengal

A month after two such similar incidents where two BJP workers were found dead in West Bengal’s Purulia district, the body of another party worker was found floating in a lake in Murshidabad district on Monday.

Dharmaraj Hazra, 54 years old, was found dead in a lake with his hands and feet tied with a rope. His body was recovered from the lake in Shaktipur village. “We have got a complaint. We have launched an investigation,” said an officer of Shaktipur police station who refused to be named.

Accusing Trinamool goons of killing Hazra, BJP’s district president (north) Gouri Shankar Ghosh said the ruling party’s leaders are eliminating BJP workers as they cannot accept the rise of the saffron party in Bengal. Ghosh confirmed that Hazra, member of the Mandal committee, was getting continuous threats from Trinamool backed goons since the panchayat elections for supporting the BJP.

BJP president, Amit Shah, in his tweet on Monday said, “TMC shames humanity, yet again. Another BJP karyakarta killed in the most barbaric manner. In Mamata’s regime, West Bengal has become an epitome of violence & brutality. Entire BJP stands firmly with Dhormo Hazra’s family in this hour of grief. My deepest condolences. Om Shanti.”

These acts of savageness are becoming common and frequent in West Bengal under the TMC supremacy. Almost exactly a month prior to this incident, Trilochan Mahato and Dulal Kumar, both BJP karyakarta’s, were found in two villages of Purulia on May 31 and June 2. While Mahato’s body was hanging from a tree, that of Kumar was hanging from a high tension electric pole. Hazra’s murder is the third such incident in a span of a month.

Earlier too, in the month of April, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker, Ajit Murmu, has died in hospital where he was admitted after being allegedly thrashed by TMC workers in Bankura’s Ranibandh. According to BJP, Murmu was BJP’s nominee for the Panchayat polls from the area and blamed Mamata Banerjee led TMC (Trinamool Congress) for the attack. According to reports, the TMC supporters launched an attack when BJP men went to the Raniganj Block Development Office (BDO) to pick up nomination papers for the panchayat polls.

West Bengal, under Mamta Banerjee rule, harbouring extreme coercion and strong-arm tactics. TMC goons openly terrorize the public without fearing any sought of repercussions. In fact, the West Bengal Panchayat polls were marked by incidents of extreme violence, in which some people were killed and several others were injured. In Murshidabad town, ballot papers were thrown in a pond after a clash between TMC and opposition parties. In some booths in Murshidabad, ballot boxes were looted at gunpoint by unidentified people. BJP supporters were also assaulted and attacked by TMC goons.

However, at this point, it would be rather thought-provoking to note the function of the so-called pseudo-liberals when it comes down to raising a voice for BJP workers murdered brutally.

Set back for Congress leader: CBI seeks custodial interrogation of P Chidambaram in INX Media case

The Delhi High Court today provided interim relief from arrest to former Finance Minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media case till August 1. The CBI, on the other hand, has sought more time to file its response on Chidambaram’s bail plea. As per reports, the CBI has sought custodial interrogation of Chidambaram.

According to a report by Republic TV, the CBI is expected to file an affidavit in the court today seeking the custodial interrogation of the former Home and Finance Minister in the UPA government.

Both P Chidambaram and his son Karti Chidambaram are accused in the INX Media scam which involves charges of bribery and lobbying in granting foreign investments worth Rs 300 crores to INX Media. INX Media was later known as NewsX, it was owned by Peter and Indrani Mukherjea of the sensational Sheena Bora murder case.

Karti was arrested by the CBI in late February at the Chennai airport. He is accused of receiving bribes worth Rs 3.5 crores from the Mukherjee’s for granting the FIPB clearance from his father’s ministry to their company.

Indrani Mukherjee, who is now in jail for murdering her daughter, had earlier named both P Chidambaram and Karti Chidambaram with allegations that they had asked for bribes to the tunes of about 1 million USD. Several of the associates and suspected benamis of the Chidambaram family were also raided by the CBI and ED.

The Chidambaram family is also under the scanner in the Aircel Maxis case. In Chennai, the Income Tax department is pursuing several cases against P Chidambaram, his wife Nalini, son Karti and daughter-in-law in charges of Money Laundering.

Dear Sushma Swaraj, wish you had called out the abuse earlier as well

0

While what happens on social media seldom stays there, social media should not be confused for real life. As a public figure, one is under constant scrutiny and should be ready for praises as well as criticism. The anonymity that the Internet provides sometimes brings out the viciousness in many and while there is no justification for abuses, there is hardly anything one can do in the ever-expanding Internet universe without bringing in the awful thing called censorship.

Recently, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj faced a lot of abuse over the Lucknow passport office incident where an ‘interfaith’ couple had accused a passport officer of indulging in moral policing and harassment. Lucknow office, on getting a tweet from Sadia Anas alias Tanvi Seth on Twitter, swung into action, and without verification issued passport in less than 24 hours. Eventually, the police found out that Sadia does not live at the address she has put up in her passport application form. Since this is not the first time Swaraj and her office have issued passports to people for trivial reasons while many Indians stranded abroad don’t get an audience with them, many on Twitter were critical of the enthusiasm of Lucknow office. Unfortunately, under the cloak of anonymity, some of these tweets ranged from abuses to threats. Irrespective of gender, no one should be subjected to any sort of abuse or threat.

However, Swaraj, who was not in India when the episode took place, on her return focused on the abuses instead of the lapse of judgement in her office. She painted even many of her supporters, who were only critical of her office, as ‘trolls’.

But as someone who has been on the receiving end of the abuses since quite a few years now, we wish Sushma Swaraj had spoken up earlier. Like the time someone wanted to ‘strip her on stage’ for not confirmed murder of 39 Indians abducted in Mosul, Iraq, because of lack of confirmation of their deaths.

A Twitter user called Kurien Chacko, who regularly retweets and supports the Congress party has a particular hatred for the women ministers in the Cabinet. He seems like a fan of “liberal” politics.

Or that one time when Sushma Swaraj gave a powerful speech in Parliament and took on Congress regarding quid pro quo in helping Bhopal gas tragedy accused Union Carbide chief Anderson to escape India.

A disgruntled employee of the passport office also took to Twitter to abuse her for transferring him to Thane office.

One fellow also described her as a ‘randi’, just like that.

The abuses just don’t end.

These are just a few. There are many, many, many more directed to women, politicians and otherwise on Twitter. I have been on receiving end as well, where absolute strangers have asked me to drink cow urine. I have had the editor of Janta Ka Reporter and abusive troll Swati Chaturvedi cheer for an Aam Aadmi Pary supporter who wished death upon me.

Ministers like Smriti Irani have been on the receiving end of the most sexually explicit innuendos on Twitter, sometimes, even by politicians. While one is glad that a powerful politician is taking a stand against abuses, one only wishes she would not paint all criticism with the same brush. Using the abuse as a smokescreen to avoid pertinent questions is an insult to her own strength and professionalism. And if she is calling out the abuse now, not merely as a smokescreen, one can only wish she had not ignored the abuses then and stood up for her colleagues who have been recipients of some of the vilest abuses.

It is time for Sushma Swaraj to end this fiasco, answer questions, or retire hurt

“The trouble with most of us is that we would rather be ruined by praise than saved by criticism”

                                                            – Norman Vincent Peale

Public service, which our politicians should be in, is ideally based on moral foundations. Which would essentially mean, that the service rendered should be by an individual who believes in justice, has a strong sense of right and wrong, and also, an undying will to ensure that the will and needs of the people are met within reasonable, legal boundaries.

But, as it is rightly said, public service is also somewhat of a contact sport. You fall. You score. You have your moments of glory. You have your moments of shame. You do things right, and sometimes you do things wrong. You have the world cheer you when you deliver that spark of brilliance and pull you down when you fail to deliver. The glory, or the shame, being non-permanent. The public servant, swinging like a pendulum, between being hailed as a messiah, to being brought down as a predator.

Indian politicians, especially the ones from the BJP, are far too familiar with this phenomena. There is a section of elite citizens, including journalists, who seem to find nothing right with the BJP. There is a section of its support base that thinks BJP does no wrong. But a larger, far more substantial base, that tends to toss bouquets and brickbats in equal measure. It is this section that constitutes the real strength of any democracy.

Sushma Swaraj is one such minister who has more often been hailed as a messiah than a predator. She has more often got the bouquets rather than the brickbats. A veteran politician and public servant who has embodied the spirit of service. She has pulled thousands out of terrible situations after she assumed the office of Minister of External Affairs. Her motherly empathy and astute political sense had made her the model minister and a tweet-away-help-desk for Indians stranded abroad.

But just as any contact sport, the Minister was bound to make a mistake. She is human, after all. And a mistake was done.

The Sadia Anas (formerly Tanvi Seth) passport issue and the manner in which it was dealt with, was frankly, a debacle. Many questions were left unanswered when Sushma Swaraj decided to step in and unceremoniously, not only give the woman a passport but also hound the passport officer who asked seemingly valid questions.

We asked why Sadia and her husband go from Noida to Lucknow for a passport when they were required to file same in Ghaziabad. We asked if she and her husband mentioned their marital status in their passport application form. We asked when it was not required by law, why did they provide the nikahnama, especially when the nikahnama had a different name than her legal name. We said if an officer raises a question when there is a difference in names provided, the query does seem valid. We asked whether they got their passports on such short notice without police verification because of the tweet. We asked whether a police verification would be done. After the verification came up empty, we asked if the issued passport would stand cancelled. Questions of national importance. Of security. Of sanctity of the process of providing the one document that authenticates an Indian citizens existence in the system.

And boy, did we get an answer. No sooner had the questions been asked, the rules of address verification itself got changed. The rule that police needs to physically visit the place of residence mentioned to confirm the authenticity of the address provided was scrapped, presumably, by the MEA.

For citizens who demand better from the government they elected, the anger was justified. For supporters who fight for the government so brutally hounded by the left cabal, the disappointment was justified. Under normal circumstances, the sane thing to do would have been for the minister to issue a statement saying the matter will be looked into. That the faith people have in the system, and in the astute minister, won’t be shattered.

Instead, the minister, and I hate to say this, took a leaf out of typical “liberal” playbook, where abuse is highlighted to drown out genuine criticism. It was a tool employed by self-styled liberals and celebrity journalists at least since 2011, and it was painful to see a fiery strong woman adopting the same trick, a good 7 years later. She ‘liked’ a bunch of tweets and asked the people whether they agree with the abuses met out to her. She even ran a Twitter poll. From her official handle. The handle of the External Affairs Minister which is monitored by dignitaries of the world.

Would anyone in their right frame of mind and with a shred of decency condone abuses met out, not just to the minister, but anyone at all? No. On a platform like Twitter, is there any way to understand how many abuses came from real, living, breathing, authentic people and how many were simply troll accounts to create a flutter? No. Is it normal (but unacceptable) for public figures, even unimportant ones like myself to be abused on Twitter? Yes. Do people remember the abuse handed out to our children, the abuses for expressing our cultural opinions, the politicians who issued rape and death threats, the obscene comments, the harassment, the abuse to Smriti Irani, the innumerable abuses to Narendra Modi or Arun Jaitley? Yes.

Was it incumbent upon the minister to ignore the abuses and focus on the questions being asked, in all humility, just like her colleagues Narendra Modi and Arun Jaitley do? Yes.

For a public figure almost using Twitter to run a portion of her Ministry’s responsibility, the use of the platform to highlight abuse and not address genuine questions is rather baffling. Perhaps, it becomes difficult for some individuals to handle criticism when they get so used to praise. Perhaps it became an ego battle. Perhaps it was an instinctive response to harsh words. And god knows, I understand the instinct to lash out when unkind words are spoken. But does this behaviour behove a senior minister? I would humbly, say not.

From where I stand, and perhaps, from where most people stand (unless those people are intellectual vultures looking to score political points), the entire fiasco looks like a smoke screen to ensure tough questions need not be answered. A false flag operation, so public memory, short as it is, forgets the terrible manner in which the Sadia Anas case was handled, and how Vikas Mishra, a passport officer doing his job, was transferred, hounded, and branded a bigot.

Several op-eds were written. The intellectual vultures demonised the ‘right wing’. None from the motley band of buffoons asked the pertinent questions and Vikas Mishra became a distant memory. The abuse was summarily attributed to the BJP support base without any sort of verification and Sushma Swaraj became the new liberal icon for the perfumed elite.

Perhaps Sushma Swaraj fails to realise that she is being used by the people who oppose her, her ideology, and her party, to get back at not only the Prime Minister but also their support base that fights the intellectual vultures on a daily basis. When Sushma Swaraj was abused by the very elites who turn her into an icon today for her Quattrochi speech in the parliament, it was these supporters who fought for her. When the elites criticised her for turning her ministry into a passport-help-desk, it was these supporters who hailed her work. When she was abused for denying visas to Pakistanis, the supporters shielded her. When the journalists maligned her for her prudence in the cases where Indians were held hostage by ISIS, it was these very supporters who rationalised her action and reasoned that what she did was in the interest of national interest.

She was right then.

Perhaps Sushma Swaraj has become so accustomed to praise, that she fails to realise, that the very supporters who fought for her, have the right to question her when she errs, and err she did. Perhaps she forgets, that the vultures, whose wings she seems to ride today, are the ones who maligned her when she did something right, and are hailing her today when she has erred because it serves their agenda of breaking the spirit of her party and its supporters.

Perhaps Sushma Swaraj rather be ruined by praise, than saved by criticism.

Perhaps she doesn’t realise that when she takes to Twitter and in a stunning display of juvenility, declares that a citizen “doesn’t need to wait to get blocked” and follows that with a prompt block, she alienates one voter. Perhaps she doesn’t realise that she is as responsible to that citizen as she is to the ones handing her the victim card today to skirt essential questions being asked.

It is time she realises that this drama has gone on long enough. It is time for her to answer real questions because no public servant can shield themselves from criticism and that it is her duty as a public servant to justify her actions to her voters. It is time she stops compromising the sanctity of her office by getting into petty Twitter quarrels.

If public service is a contact sport, it is time she either dusts herself off, stands up and gets back in the game or retires hurt.

Mehbooba Mufti accused of nepotism and incompetence by PDP MLAs who threaten to quit party

In a situation of possible revolt arising within the PDP, Mehbooba Mufti has been accused of incompetence and nepotism by three of her party MLAs who have even decided to quit the party, Times of India has reported.

As per the report, the revolt is being spearheaded by Imran Raza Ansari – a minister in the now defunct BJP-PDP government in Jammu and Kashmir. He is believed to wield a significance influence over five assembly seats in the state.

Raza Ansari while speaking to the media alleged that it was Mehbooba Mufti’s incompetence which led to a collapse of the government. He also claimed that she had failed both the PDP and her late father Mufti Mohammed Saeed.

Interestingly Ansari held a very positive view of the BJP, who he claims was responsible for releasing funds for various developmental projects in the state.

As per a Hindustan Times report, Ansari also accused Mufti of nepotism by terming PDP as a “family affairs party”. The report claimed that Ansari stated that “brothers, uncles, maternal uncles and other relatives” were running the show.

He claimed that he had highlighted the matter when Mufti inducted her brother into the cabinet, and that there were many others who were opposed to the same. He has also announced that he won’t remain a part of the party as long as Mufi remained in charge.

Ironically, Ansari’s own uncle – Abid Reza Ansari, too decided to level similar allegations of Mufti turning the party into a family fiefdom. He is a MLA from the Zadibal constituency in Srinagar.

Besides these two, the revolt is being fuelled by Gulmarg’s MLA Mohammad Abbas who announced his decision to quit the party as it had been hijacked by a few leaders.

The PDP’s chief spokesperson Naem Athar while responding to the revolt stated that they would come with a response after studying the statement.

Interestingly a News18 report seems to have hinted at another angle to the story by claiming that a sizeable breakaway faction of the PDP was willing to join the BJP, with an announcement possibly coming post the culmination of this year’s Amarnath Yatra.
