“It is embarrassing”: Japanese economists and analysts in shock after IMF predicted that India will overtake Japan by 2025 to become 4th largest economy

In late April 2024, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates revealed that India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Nominal terms will reach $4.34 trillion in 2025 while Japan’s GDP will be at $4.31 trillion. With this, India will overtake Japan to become the World’s 4th largest economy by next year. Incidentally, New Delhi’s jump to fourth place comes a year earlier than predicted by the IMF in its last estimate, partly because of a fall in the Japanese currency, Yen.

As per reports, the announcement of India surpassing Japan by next year has shocked Tokyo. It has initiated a churn among the economists and strategists in the country that used to be the undisputed 2nd-largest economy in the world till 2010 but will soon slip to fifth place behind the US, China, Germany, and India.

The chief policy economist for Fujitsu’s Global Market Intelligence Unit, Martin Schulz said, “For Japan, this is a very big concern — but few people are talking about it openly because it is embarrassing and very difficult to solve.”

According to Schulz, when Shinzo Abe became the Prime Minister in 2012, he correctly recognised the problems Japan was facing at that time and announced sweeping plans to lift Japanese growth. These plans were dubbed as “Abenomics”. Two of his “three arrows” of the policy — monetary easing by the Bank of Japan and fiscal stimulus through government spending – achieved success. However, the third arrow, of structural reforms, fell short.

Schulz added, “The whole idea of Abenomics was to drive growth at businesses, but structural reforms were also needed to push productivity, but that is very hard to do in a country that is aging and where there is resistance to change, to digitalisation and people who have been in positions for a long time simply prefer the old ways.”

As per Japanese strategists, the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine have had a similar impact on Japan’s economy that is still being felt as it is felt elsewhere. Other indicators point out a more acute problem for the Japanese economy.

Recently, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released its latest report on 2nd May on the outlook for global economic growth. As per the estimates, the world would grow at 3.1%, up from 2.9% in its February report. However, it has cut Japan’s growth estimates from the 1% it had projected three months earlier to just 0.5%. In May, the OECD predicted India to grow at 6.6%.

Global strategist and managing director of Nikko Asset Management in Tokyo, Naomi Fink stressed that some of Japan’s economic malaise can be linked to the three “lost decades” of stagnant economic growth.

Speaking with DW, Fink argued that developed economies tend to grow slower than emerging economies like India. She said, “It’s altogether normal for developed countries to grow more slowly than emerging markets — they have less growing to do before they hit a growth equilibrium, and they typically have aging populations, even with a degree of inward migration.”

Fink added that Japan could not match India’s investment in infrastructure and a rapidly growing middle class. She pointed out that Germany had surpassed Japan primarily because of the fall in the Japanese currency yen against the euro over the last 12 years. Yen saw a decline of 40% which put the real exchange rate effectively at a 50-year low.

Schulz pointed out that the feeble yen is arguably the Japanese government’s greatest challenge at the moment. “The yen is becoming a major problem and while in the past if governments did nothing it would bounce back, that is not happening this time,” he said.

He noted that market intervention has been “futile” and will remain that way for as long as interest rates remain static.

While the Japanese strategists express concern over slipping in the leaders tally, Former NITI Aayog CEO lists out how major structural reforms by the Modi government drove India’s surge

Amitabh Kant was India’s Sherpa during the country’s G20 Presidency and served as the Former CEO of NITI Aayog, the apex public policy think tank of the Government of India.

While lauding PM Modi’s leadership for bringing structural reforms, he listed major achievements of the Modi government that catapulted India from Fragile 5 in 2013 to the Top 5 Economies of the world in 2024.

Tamil Nadu police arrests YouTuber Felix Gerald of Red Pix for interviewing YouTuber Savukku Shankar

On 10th May, Trichy district cyber crime police arrested YouTuber Felix Gerald of Red Pix from Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Gerald was arrested for interviewing popular YouTuber Savukku Shankar who was earlier arrested for allegedly speaking against senior police officers and a female police personnel. It was claimed that Shankar spoke in an objectionable manner about the officials.

Gerald was arrested on a complaint by Musiri DSP MA Yasmin. A special police team led by SP RV Varun Kumar was dispatched from Trichy to arrest Gerald. A case was registered against Shankar following the complaint of Musiri DSP, FIR was registered against Shankar for making derogatory remarks against women police personnel during an interview with Gerald. When Gerald was arrested, he was trying to submit a petition to the chairman of the Press Club of India over Shankar’s arrest.

Notably, Gerald approached the Madras High Court and sought anticipatory bail. During the last hearing, Justice Kumaresh Babu observed that Felix Gerald should have been made the first accused in the case as he “prompted Shankar to make the objectionable comments”.

The court also observed that YouTube channels were becoming a menace to society. Justice Babu suggested that action should be taken against interviewers who push interviewers to make derogatory or objectionable comments.

Following his arrest, Gerald was produced in a local magistrate court for a transit warrant. He was transported to Trichy via train. He would reach Trichy on the evening of 12th May or the morning of 13th May.

Savukku Shankar was allegedly beaten in jail

Earlier, it was reported that Shankar was beaten in Coimbatore jail. Savukku Shankar’s counsel claimed that Shankar’s right hand was fractured in an assault on the night of 4th May, after he was remanded in prison in judicial custody, and that no adequate treatment was provided to him. The counsel claimed that on Saturday night, the jail staff, numbering roughly ten people, blindfolded Savukku Shankar and attacked him with plastic pipes wrapped in clothing. He claimed that Shankar was compelled to take painkillers without his consent. Shankar was sent to police remand till 17th May.

He was booked under Sections 294(b), 509 and 353 IPC r/w section 4 of Tamilnadu prohibition of harassment of Woman Act and section 67 of Information Technology Act,2000. Savukku Shankar, a former employee of the vigilance department, was earlier sentenced to 6 months in jail for a contempt of court case by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. In 2008, he was jailed by the DMK government for leaking a conversation between two top officials.

Congress, Left and TMC have put identity of Bengal at stake for vote bank politics, TMC leaders threatening Hindus: PM Modi

0

Launching a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress-led government in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused TMC leaders of threatening Hindus in the state, adding that Congress, Left and TMC have put the identity of Bengal at stake for “vote bank politics”.

While addressing a public meeting in Howrah, PM Modi said, “Congress, Left and TMC have put the identity of Bengal at stake for vote bank politics. TMC MLAs are threatening Hindus. They say that there are a few Hindus left here, and we will drown the Hindus in Bhagirathi. Notably, it’s utterly shameful that TMC is still protecting them. Such a game of appeasement, such a gesture of inhumanity is absolutely unfortunate.”

He further slammed the TMC government for protecting the culprits involved in the alleged incident of woman molestation and sexual harassment in Sandeshkhali.

“Today our sisters are not safe under the TMC government. Women are being tortured here. What happened in Sandeshkhali? The whole country saw it. The entire TMC government was engaged in saving the culprits of our daughters. Today the accused is in the custody of CBI but TMC is still batting for him,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi continued his attack on the state government and said, “People of Bengal are unable to exercise their right to Freedom of Expression due to TMC’s oppressive tactics. TMC has suppressed the voices of the citizens of Bengal.”

Coming down heavily on the state government, the Prime Minister said that the Congress’ corruption, nepotism, appeasement and the Left’s tyranny and anarchy, together combined to form the TMC.

“Congress’s corruption, Congress’s nepotism and Congress’s appeasement and secondly Left, Left’s tyranny and anarchy, if we put all these evils together then only TMC is formed. Our Howrah is witnessing how Congress, Left and TMC have destroyed Bengal,” he said.

“The way TMC is looting Bengal is a great sin. Teacher recruitment scam, coal scam, chit fund scam, ration scam. What a long list it is. TMC has not even spared our farmers. TMC loots paddy farmers in the markets,” PM Modi added.

He further targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the ‘inheritance tax’ row and said that the ‘Shehzada’ of the Congress party wanted to get everyone’s property in the country investigated.

“These people are talking about usurping half of your property even after you die. The ‘Shehzada’ is saying that he will impose an inheritance tax. The Congress party is also talking about giving SC-ST-OBC reservations to Muslims,” PM Modi said.

“There is a competition of appeasement going on between TMC and Congress. The ‘Shehzada’ of the Congress party wants to get everyone’s property in the country investigated. Your earnings will be distributed among those who go for ‘Vote Jihad’ for the INDI Alliance,” he added.

PM Modi alleged that the TMC is not allowing poor people to get central government benefits.

“The TMC government is trying to loot even the central schemes. The BJP government gives Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to the poor. Still, here the TMC government releases money only to those who are either associated with TMC or give a ‘cut’ to the TMC people. These people are not allowing other poor people to get the benefits of our schemes,” he said.

“Earlier, parties used to take your votes but after forming the government, their language changed. When you used to go to the leader, the leader used to say, who are you? Modi has changed this thinking. Today the BJP government at the Center is reaching the doorstep of every citizen of the country. And that is why today crores of people of Bengal are getting free ration so that no poor mother is forced to see her children hungry,” PM Modi added.

Voting will take place for eight Lok Sabha seats of West Bengal in the fourth phase of voting to be held on May 13. The constituencies are Baharampur, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Bardhaman Purba, Burdwan-Durgapur, Asansol, Bolpur and Birbhum.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP came up winning 18 seats against the TMC’s 22. The Congress’s tally dropped to just 2 seats, while the Left scored a blank.

Dichotomy of Krishnanagar: Dharmakshetra of the Past, Modern-Day Mahua-Mess

The proverbial vaults of civilizational capital are what give an idea of how well a place is progressing (or not). For Poschimbongo, Krishnanagar happens to be a key bastion of socio-cultural heritage and civilizational importance, within the larger backdrop of Nadia. Nabadwip, an ancient town situated within the Nadia district, is renowned for its rich intellectual and cultural heritage, earning it the moniker “Oxford of Bengal.” This historic town holds significant importance as the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a revered figure in Hinduism. Nabadwip also served as the cradle for the development of the Navya Nyaya system, a prominent Indian school of logic that flourished in the 15th century, producing eminent logicians.

Throughout its history, Nabadwip has been a seat of political power, serving as the capital of Bengal under the rule of Ballal Sen and later Lakshman Sen, the kings of the Sena Empire, who reigned from 1159 to 1206. The district of Nadia, which includes Nabadwip, also witnessed pivotal historical events, such as the British defeat of Siraj ud-Daulah, and the Nawab of Bengal, at the Battle of Plassey. Additionally, the village of Chaugacha in Krishnanagar, Nadia, was the starting point of the 1859 revolt against European Indigo planters. Nadia’s historical significance extends beyond its borders, as the district is believed to have maintained trade relations with neighbouring regions, including Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan, underscoring its strategic position as a hub of commerce and cultural exchange in the past. Krishnanagar, in Nadia, has a celebrated cultural heritage — from the melodious Kabi Gaan of Nakashipara to the divine Raasleela performed in Tehatta and Palashipara. One can revel in the soul-stirring Baul folk songs that echo through the fields of Krishnanagar and are spiritually enriched by the Padabali Kirtans that pierce through all the vagaries of life, to show us that we are one people – Bharatiya.

Remembering Shri Dwijendralal Ray, we take pride in his contributions to our nationalistic and cultural identity through his songs and plays. In honouring Shri Narayan Sanyal, we recognize the importance of literature in shaping societal values. Reflecting on the entrepreneurial spirit of Shri Bipradas Palchoudhury, we acknowledge his vision for Swadeshi and self-reliance—a vision that aligns with our Make in India initiative. This program has been instrumental in revitalizing India’s industrial sector, inviting both local and international investment that respects and uplifts our commitment to self-sustenance and economic independence. And most importantly, in promoting Atmanirbharata.

Finally, celebrating Shri Basanta Sinha Roy, whose bravery and determination mirror our national ethos, there has been vigorous support for sports and physical education from the Union Government, emphasizing the importance of fitness and resilience in our youth. On the flip side, the representation of Krishnanagar in the Parliament has been done by, arguably, one of the most infamous TMC leaders of the day – Mahua Moitra. In this country, freedom of speech and the idea of liberalism has been misused by the Opposition. Mohua Moitra notoriously said that Ma Kali is a meat-eating, alcohol-accepting Goddess. To contextualize this, we have to look at this statement along with others by INDI alliance leaders. Udayanidhi Stalin’s rant against Sanatana Dharma is common knowledge. Fateh Bahadur Singh of the Rashtriya Janata Dal recently asked where Ma Durga was when the Britishers destroyed Bharat. The question in front of the country is: do we want to side with such Adharmic, shameless politicians, who use motifs of religion and spirituality for their politicking? Do we want to side with those who do not understand Bharat and still want to lead it?

Then there is the most ubiquitous systemic-termite of all: corruption. West Bengal has become the private ATM – Appease, Thieve and Mutate centre of the Trinamool Congress. They pick and choose and take whatever they want to. Recently, the ED arrested TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya (Palashipara Vidhan Sabha) in a recruitment scam case. The entire state machinery seems to be implicit in the cash-for-jobs scam, and that may just be the beginning. The Sandeshkhali scandal showed how entrenched some of the TMC henchmen are, especially in the critical Sunderban belt, with various avenues of corruption used, such as that by the fishery mafia. Mamata Banerjee has increasingly become more paranoid by the day. She is talking of Ram Navami as a day for others instigating riots. Who are these others? Are we not one nation? Are we not one people? This us-vs-them debate is a toxic one that Didi is using for her electoral advantage. Who is `hers’? The Bangladeshi vote banks that she is meticulously engineering or the rural poor whom she exploits and then appeases with some freebies occasionally? She is so paranoid that she even divides the Nadia district. It is unacceptable that residents outside Krishnanagar Sadar are left with inadequate healthcare facilities. While Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital is overwhelmed, the people suffer daily.

The unchecked flow of drugs into our communities, particularly from international borders like Nepal and Bangladesh, has devastated the youth of Bengal. Under TMC’s watch, places like Tentulberia have become hubs for narcotics without any substantial crackdown. As we approach the General elections voting in the region, it is important to evaluate the performance of the current MP – Mahua Moitra, whose tenure has been marked by unfulfilled promises and missed opportunities. Essential projects like the rail over-bridge in Krishnanagar Beledanga, bridges over the Jalangi River, and a crucial Tuberculosis Hospital remain incomplete, leaving the people of the region waiting. Conservation efforts for the Jalangi River have been ignored, and public safety has been compromised, with no action to address rising communal disturbances. The once-promised revitalization of the weaving industry in Dhaniakhali has not materialized, affecting thousands of livelihoods. Additionally, proposed economic boosters like the power loom in Belur remain stalled.

The repeated instances of communal unrest and the dominance of anti-social elements in various villages show a breakdown of law and order. The insensitivity shown by Mamata Banerjee towards the Matua community is deeply troubling. A CM who cannot even pronounce Harichand Guruchand Tagore’s name during a speech has clearly no interest in serving the community or respecting them. The appeasement of the Matua community is one of various such policies in Didi’s marketplace of appeasement: where there are packages of all shapes and sizes, customized to what helps her win the most electoral votes in a specific election! On the other hand, even with Didi not allowing many of the central schemes to come through to Poschimbongo, there has been development under the aegis of national policies.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, both urban and rural, the BJP has made significant strides in ensuring that every family has a roof over their head in Nadia. With nearly 6,000 houses completed in urban areas and over 14,000 in rural settings, the commitment to housing security stands unmatched. The One Nation, One Ration Card scheme has revolutionized food security in Nadia, ensuring that 35 lakh people under NFSA benefit regardless of their location within India, promoting national unity and support for our citizens. Through the Jal Jeevan Mission, the Union government has succeeded in providing tap water to over 8 lakh households in Nadia, the highest in West Bengal, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving quality of life for every citizen. Under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, the Union government has issued 7.61 lakh job cards, securing livelihoods and supporting the backbone of our economy — our rural communities.

Through initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and the establishment of AIIMS in Kalyani, the BJP is working towards ensuring that top-notch healthcare facilities are accessible to all, reducing the burden on families and enhancing the health and well-being of our populace. Major projects like the expansion of NH-34 and the construction of the Krishnanagar-Berhampore Highway are testament to the commitment to enhance connectivity and boost economic growth. These infrastructural developments are crucial for facilitating commerce and improving daily life for millions. An exciting development has taken place, civilizational speaking, in Mayapur, with the construction of the world’s largest religious monument, the Temple of Vedic Planetarium, which not only showcases our rich cultural heritage but also promotes tourism, creating numerous job opportunities and boosting the local economy.

The choice for Nadia in General Elections 2024 seems to be an interesting one. This is a choice that would reshape the fate of the state. But most importantly, this is a choice that would either maintain or disrupt civilizational continuity. Poshchimbongo needs a Double Engine Sarkaar, but for now, it needs a Mahua-less Krishnanagar and a post-Didi parliament!

OpIndia Exclusive: Illegal dargah at Jamnagar’s Ranjit Sagar Dam at Gujarat not removed even after administration’s order in 2022

It has been discovered that an unauthorised Islamic structure has been built at the Ranjit Sagar Dam, the source of livelihood for the residents of the Jamnagar area of Gujarat. What is astonishing is that the dargah (shrine) continues to exist there even after the administration issued a written order in 2022 to remove it. Local Hindu activists are furious and complained that the authorities are not paying much attention to the matter. Meanwhile, officials, while speaking to OpIndia claimed that they are going to take necessary action.

According to the information, a shrine named “Hazrat Panjupir Dargah Sharif” has been constructed inside the Ranjit Sagar Dam which is located between the villages of Harshadpur and Nava Mokhanain in the Jamnagar district. The regulations mention that building private structures on publicly owned waterways is illegal, however, the shrine stands on a 10,000–15,000 square foot area of government land. Hindu activists in Jamnagar submitted a petition to the officials in 2022 in this regard, seeking that the structure should be taken down immediately.

A government investigation proved that there was encroachment

The government notification to remove the shrine. (Source: OpIndia Gujarati)

The officials surveyed the property following a complaint of illegal invasion and confirmed that the shrine had been built on government land and was illegal. In September 2022, the authorities ordered Kasam Hasan Odiya, the Munjawar (caretaker) of the place to take down the shrine. The order highlighted that if he did not vacate the government land, a notice under the revenue code’s section 202 would be served and the authorities would demolish the structure. The written order is available with OpIndia.

When OpIndia tried to get to the root of the matter, we found that the shrine continued to be there even after the official ruling. OpIndia contacted “Kabja Hatao Sangharsh Samiti” activist Yuvraj Solanki to get further details on the matter. He told OpIndia, “A huge shrine has been built at the back of the dam. It has three more shrines of 31-31 feet each and a newly constructed side shrine which is also of equal length. In the year 2022, we submitted an application to the collector on behalf of the Kabja Hatao Sangharsh Samiti.”

He further pointed out, “This shrine in Jamnagar Ranjit Sagar Dam has been built in the last 30-35 years. The structures sink during the monsoon season when water seeps into this section of the dam. Furthermore, the dam is currently being filled by the “SAUNI Yojana” (Saurashtra Narmada Avataran Irrigation Yojana initiative) to meet Jamnagar’s water requirements and as a result, this spot is submerged under water for roughly half the year and remains outside during the other half. Importantly, all surrounding villages are populated by Hindus. The complaint was made against the current Munjawar who stays in a nearby village and isn’t a local resident. It appeared that the government was involved in the construction of the shrine. The pillars used to create the shed are from BSNL.”

Concerning the issue originating from the region, he revealed to OpIndia, “It has also been established in 2022 that this intrusion is unlawful, however, nothing has been done about it. The collector then assured that he would look into the situation.”

Water is being used as an excuse even when the water recedes

Yuvraj Solanki disclosed, “We were informed that since there was flooding of water, no action could be taken, yet nothing was done even when the water subsided. The place is now empty. Today, with no water present, bulldozers could easily reach the area.” He asked why there’s been no response, particularly in light of the structure’s proven illegality.

No such matter under consideration: District Collector Jamnagar

OpIndia spoke with multiple Jamnagar District Collector officials to learn more about the measures taken in relation to the matter. Jamnagar District Collector BK Pandya talked to us and noted, “No such issue has been brought to my attention as I have only taken charge two months ago. However, I will check the records to determine what work has been done in this regard.”

Haven’t received any orders: SP

OpIndia also contacted Jamnagar Superintendent of Police (SP) Premsukh Delu. He conveyed, “We haven’t received any order regarding this matter. While a directive was issued in the past, the area was waterlogged, preventing us from taking any action. Only the revenue officer can provide information about the current situation, but we will inquire further. If the authorities issue us an order, we will certainly take action.”

Notices issued to enchroacher, we’ll investigate the matter: Mamalatdar

OpIndia also spoke with Jamnagar Village Mamlatdar (Tehesildar) who expressed, “The order for the removal of encroachment has been issued, but I will investigate why no actions have been taken. Notices have been served to those who have encroached on government land. We will investigate and take necessary actions.” He claimed that he took charge just two months ago and shortly after, the elections started, keeping most of the staff occupied but they will now prioritise the investigation.

Notably, OpIndia has recent photos of the shrine. Images clicked on the morning of 11th May make it abundantly evident that the Islamic structure, which a government inquiry determined to be unlawful, is still in place. Nothing has been done, not even in response to the official instruction.

What can I do if it’s Illegal: Kasam Hasan

When OpIndia contacted Munjawar Kasam Hasan, he confirmed that he had been served the notice. He further stated that they are currently unable to do anything and even if an order were to be issued, they are not in a position to comply. When asked whether the order had been challenged in court, he denied it. He also alleged that the structure was built approximately 30 years ago.

These specifics make it clear that there is unlawful encroachment at Jamnagar’s Ranjit Sagar Dam. The removal order was issued in 2022, but as of right now, nothing has been done in the case. Sources have informed us that if the district collector issues an order, then action can be taken.

You will have to vote for whom I tell you to vote: 4 BSP supporters accused of killing a BJP supporter’s father in his house, UP Police registers FIR

An elderly man named Radheshyam Pathak was brutally killed after a political debate turned violent in Uttar Pradesh’s Kushinagar. According to reports, Shambhu Chaudhary and his three accomplices are accused of the murder. The family members of the deceased, who rushed to save Pathak’s life, were also brutally assaulted. The police have registered an FIR against a total of 4 accused and initiated an investigation. The incident occurred on Friday (10th May 2024).

According to reports, the incident took place in the Nebua Naurangiya Police Station area of Kushinagar. On Friday, some people were sitting under the shade of a tree near a temple in the Baghapurna village. They were discussing the ongoing Lok Sabha elections. According to the family members of the deceased, during this time, Shambhu Chaudhary and the people present with him allegedly talked about voting for the Bahujan Samaj Party. Amit Pathak, who was also present there, advocated voting for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

This led to a heated debate between both sides. It is alleged that Shambhu got enraged at the thought of voting for the BJP and said, “Main jise kahunga, use vote dena padega.” (Translation – You will have to vote for whom I tell you to vote)

Some people intervened and calmed down the situation, sending both parties back to their respective homes. It is alleged that on the same night, Shambhu Chaudhary, along with some of his accomplices, reached Amit Pathak’s house. After reaching there, the accused first verbally abused the victims and then started mercilessly beating the entire family. The accused also assaulted Amit’s 55-year-old father Radheshyam Pathak and his 21-year-old sister Ritu. Hearing the commotion, people started gathering there.

The victims dialed 112. When the Police personnel arrived at the spot, the attackers fled from there after issuing threats. All the attackers are said to be Shambhu’s family members and their names have been identified as Sipu and Tinkle Chaudhary.

Ritu, Amit, and their father Radheshyam were taken to the hospital. The siblings were admitted to the Medical College in Ravindra Nagar. However, their father’s condition was serious and he was referred to Gorakhpur Medical College. As per reports, Radheshyam passed away during treatment at the hospital. His body underwent a post-mortem examination. The relatives of the deceased, along with local residents, staged a protest by placing the body in front of the police station. They demanded strict action against Shambhu Chaudhary and his accomplices.

The police calmed the situation and filed an FIR regarding the incident, categorising it as a case of a mutual dispute. Various organisations have condemned the murder of Radheshyam Pathak. Presently, the accused are on the run, and efforts are underway to apprehend them. In view of the tension, a police force has been deployed in the village.

West Bengal: Sandeshkhali women thrash TMC worker over ‘fake sting operation’, video goes viral

On Saturday (12th May), a group of women villagers thrashed a Trinamool Congress worker in broad daylight for making ‘fake sting videos.’ The incident took place in Sandeshkhali in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

In a video that has surfaced on social media, women in Sandeshkhali were seen beating a TMC worker in the presence of the party’s MLA Sukumar Mahata and leader Dilip Mallick.

The TMC has accused BJP candidate Rekha Patra and party leader Archana Majumdar of leading the group of women, who thrashed the unnamed Trinamool Congress worker.

The local unit of the BJP had been protesting outside the Sandeshkhali police station over the arrest of party workers in fake robbery cases in the Jeliakhali area.

The BJP has accused the ruling TMC government of producing fake videos and doctored sting operations to negate the ordeal of sexual violence faced by women in Sandeshkhali. It has stated that the TMC is bribing local women to speak against the saffron party.

In this regard, the BJP has demanded the arrest of local TMC leader Dileep Mallicik for producing fake videos with the support of Sandeshkhali MLA Sukumar Mahata.

The Background of the Controversy

The unrest in Sandeshkhali village in February 2024 brought into focus the atrocities committed against women by former Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Shahjahan and his aides Shibu Prasad Hazra and Uttam Sardar.

Multiple women have come forward to narrate instances of land grabbing, and sexual violence perpetrated against them by the trio. Forced by circumstances, they took matters into their own hands and gheraoed the police station.

The agitation led by women eventually led to the arrest of the 3 TMC goons. OpIndia had previously reported how the Trinamool Congress, led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, have left no stone unturned to trivialise the sexual violence committed against women in Sandeshkhali.

Recently, the Trinamool Congress released two sting videos, one featuring a local woman Jaba Rani Singha and another featuring BJP’s Sandeshkhali mandal president Gangadhar Koyal.

Both of them have rubbished the claims made in the video, highlighting discrepancies such as audio-video mismatch and malicious edits.

Global crackdown and Western leniency: NIA Intensifies Hunt for Khalistani terrorists operating from UAE, Canada, US, Australia and Pakistan

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has intensified its crackdown against five top five Khalistani terrorists linked to Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), a banned terror organisation. As per reports, these terrorists have been orchestrating anti-India activities from the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Canada, the United States and Pakistan. These terrorists have been identified as Baljeet Singh alias Baljeet Maur, Gurjant Singh, Prince Chauhan, Aman Poorewal, and Bilal Mansher. The investigation into the matter was initiated on the orders of Union Home Ministry.

The NIA investigation was prompted by credible intelligence inputs that these five were planning to create unrest in the country. The investigation aims to disrupt the extensive network of these terrorists who have been sitting on foreign land and plotting against India. These five are accused of terrorist activities including arms and drugs smuggling, coordinating finances for terrorist acts, youth recruitment for anti-India activities, hawala transactions and more. The transnational operation initiated by NIA highlighted the global footprint of the KTF and the challenges posed by its members who are sitting in countries like the US and Canada.

Critics have argued that the political asylum and refugee protections offered to these terrorists by foreign countries are exploited by the individuals linked to terrorist organisations. It has raised significant security concerns in India.

During the investigation, NIA revealed that the five Khalistani terrorists were getting support from incarcerated Khalistani terrorists who are lodged in Punjab jail. One such terrorist identified as Kamaljeet Sharma was questioned by NIA. He has been identified as a key figure in coordinating with KTF to strengthen their network within India.

Investigation revealed that these terrorists in jail helped in raising funds for the Khalistani movement via criminal activities. The money was routed to KTF terrorists sitting in foreign countries via Hawala which in turn was used to send weapons to India via Pakistan. Furthermore, criminals sitting outside India that are linked to Khalistani groups are also providing logistics for Hawala transfer and arms smuggling.

Notably, Western nations have shown leniency towards controlling such groups and individuals. There is a growing concern among Indian security agencies that these countries are allowing Khalistani radicals to use their territories as a base for plotting and recruiting, which may be inadvertently contributing to the resurgence of the Khalistani movement in India. Notably, several Khalistani terrorists have taken refuge in countries like Canada, the US, Australia, Pakistan and UAE. Despite repeated requests from India, countries like Canada and the US have failed to extradite these terrorists.

Furthermore, Canada has been deemed a haven for Khalistani terrorists who fled India over the years. For instance, in the 1990s now-dead Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar fled to Canada on a fake passport. Canada not only let him live on its soil for over two decades but also provided him citizenship despite the fact he was wanted in India. Notably, following his murder, instead of helping India control the Khalistanis, Canada blamed India for the killing without any presentable evidence.

Kerala: SDPI and Muslim outfits accuse the LDF govt of cutting in Muslim reservations and diverting it to disabled persons, warn of “strong agitation”

The Muslim outfits in Kerala including SDPI, the political arm of banned terror outfit PFI, have launched a protest against the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government. They have accused it of systematically slashing the Muslim quota and committing fraud against the minority community. As per reports, they have accused the government of giving Muslim quota in the dependent appointment to persons with disability and other weaker sections on a couple of occasions and described the move as “objectionable” and “unacceptable”.

Apart from condemning the government’s move to divert the Muslim quota on account of disability reservation, they have demanded that the LDF government withdraw its decision.

Muslim quota in OBC reservation

In Kerala, 40% of government jobs are set aside for OBCs and the Muslim community is considered an OBC in the state.

In every 40 appointments for last-grade service positions reserved for OBCs, the distribution is as follows: 11 for Ezhavas, Thiyyas, and Billavas; 10 for Muslims; four for Latin Catholics and Anglo-Indians; three each for Hindu and Christian Nadars; two each for Scheduled Caste converts to Christianity, Vishwakarma, and Dheevaras; and six for other backward classes combined.

Meanwhile, for posts outside the last grade service, the distribution for every 40 OBC appointments is as follows – 14 will be Ezhavas, Thiyyas and Billavas; 12 will be Muslims; four will be Latin Catholics and Anglo Indians; two will be Hindu and Christian Nadars, one will be a Scheduled Caste convert to Christianity; three will be Viswakarmas; one will be Dheevara; and three will be Other Backward Classes put together.

These appointments follow a pre-defined rotation policy. However, the Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC) has mentioned that the rotation rule would not apply to the appointments of relatives of government employees who die in service or to the appointment of relatives of military personnel killed, permanently disabled, or reported to be missing in action.

Muslim outfits register strong protest alleging cut in Muslim reservation

As per a report in Anweshanam, SDPI State Vice President KK Raihanath alleged that it is the Left government that has issued an order to cut Muslim reservations by two percent under the guise of disability reservation. When the protests against the 2019 order were strong, the government deceived the Muslim community by only announcing that it would take action to protect reservations, she added while slamming the Left government.

She said that the Left government’s move to cut Muslim reservations again under the guise of dependent appointment is objectionable. She alleged that it was an attempt to subvert the “rightful reservation” and should be immediately withdrawn.

According to her, the move to set aside Turn 16 of the PSC rotation chart for Dependent appointments, which are reserved for Muslim reservations in all government appointments, is a continuation of minority fraud

The SDPI leader also warned that Kerala will “have to witness a strong agitation” against this.

Similarly, an Islamist organisation that is part of the Islamic ‘reformist’ Mujahid Movement, Kerala Nadvathul Mujahideen (KNM) said that the LDF government should give up its plan to reduce Muslim reservations in government jobs by pitting Muslim quota against the compassionate employment scheme.

In a statement, KNM said it was unacceptable to strip away the rights granted by the Constitution to the socially disadvantaged Muslim minority community under any pretext. The outfit is headed by T P Abdullah Koya Madani and it passed the resolution after holding a meeting of its state leaders in Kozhikode, Kerala.

Slamming the Communist government, it said, “Don’t pretend that the authorities didn’t see the percentage of Muslim reservations going down when new sections entered the reservation.”

Further, the KNM alleged that the (state) government had earlier eaten into the Muslim reservation by assigning the turns of Muslims to persons with disabilities. It lamented, “Muslims are suffering a big loss because their turns are being assigned to other weaker sections.” The Islamist outfit asserted that this is a serious matter.

It advised the Left government not to help Sangh Parivar (RSS, BJP) calling them communal forces.

The outfit said that the Sangh Parivar has already made its agenda clear during the election campaign to end the Muslim reservation. The state government should not be helping the communal forces that are trying to sabotage the Muslim reservation assured by the Constitution, it added.

Another Muslim outfit named the Kerala Muslim Jamaat Youth Council released a press note to condemn the government’s move. It described the government’s move to cut Muslim reservations by one percent for PSC-dependent recruitment as “unacceptable” and “unconstitutional”.

After the meeting, the Jamaat Council alleged that the decision to cut Muslim reservations by two percent to implement the differently-abled reservation has not been corrected to date and the government is “challenging the community” by cutting the Muslim reservation again in dependent appointments.

Alleging that walk-in interviews subvert reservations for Muslims, the Council alleged, “In temporary appointments including in the state education department and in the public sector, making appointments through walk-in interviews is a step that gives impetus to the subversion of reservations, and appointments should be made only through employment exchanges following the rules and reservations, and the government should immediately withdraw from the action that causes loss of opportunities to the community in differently abled reservations and dependent appointments.”

The Jamaat Council added that it will have to be organised on issues.

Rajasthan: Salman kills Hindu man on suspicion of ‘dating’ Muslim woman, arrested
