‘He was sexually abusing us’: 6 minor students of a madrasa arrested for murder of Maulana Mohammad Mahir, say they were fed up with his harassment

The Ajmer police arrested six minor madrasa students on Sunday (12th May) for reportedly murdering Mohammadi Masjid’s imam, Maulana Mohammad Mahir (32), on April 27. Police also recovered Mohammed Mahir’s mobile phone and the rope that was allegedly used to strangle him.

As per the reports, all the students from Madarsa had been narrating a different story about the murder. The students claimed that three masked men arrived in the Madarsa, killed Mohammed Mahir, and threatened them to be quiet.

Ajmer SP Devendra Kumar Bishnoi stated that the case was a struggle for the Ajmer police special squad because nothing was emerging despite scanning hundreds of CCTV footage and investigating Mahir’s background, who was from Uttar Pradesh and had been residing in the Madarrsa for the past eight years. “But, we took students into confidence who slowly revealed everything,” he said.

“One of the students of the madrasa was recently sexually abused by Mahir who belongs to the Rampur village of Shahbad, Uttar Pradesh. When he threatened to reveal everything, Mahir lured him with money. Disturbed by his regular harassment, students decided to murder Mahir. They beat him severely with a stick and strangulated him to death with a rope,” Bishnoi added.

According to Bishnoi, students told police that they were outraged and angered over the Maulana because Mahir sexually abused students regularly.

As per the reports, two days before the murder, Mahir had returned from his village in Uttar Pradesh. On 26th April, the students purchased sleeping drugs from a medical shop, but Mahir had already had dinner outside. When he returned, students offered him curd and tablets.

After a while, Maulana fell asleep. Students went to the storeroom and retrieved a stick and rope. They hit his head with the stick while he was sleeping. He attempted to stand up, but they wrapped the rope around his neck and strangled him. He subsequently became unconscious. They left the room after confirming that his heartbeat had stopped.

However, the incident came to the fore only after Toshif Ashraf of the Madarsa filed a police complaint.

Conspiracy to kill Hindu leaders: Shakil Sheikh arrested from Maharashtra by Surat Crime Branch, was in touch with Maulvi Sohail Abu Bakar Timol

Days after Maulvi Sohail Abu Bakar Timol was arrested from Surat for conspiring to kill former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, another accused identified as Shakil Sattar Sheikh has been arrested by Surat Crime Branch from Nanded in Maharashtra. Meanwhile, a Pakistan connection of Maulvi Sohail Abu Baar Timol has emerged.

Reports say that Shakil Sheikh alias Raza was in touch with the Maulvi who conspired to kill Nupur Sharma and other Hindu leaders. The 19-year-old man is being interrogated by the Surat Crime Branch and will be brought to Surat.

Before Shakil’s arrest in Nanded, the Surat Crime Branch arrested Nepali Shahnaz alias Mohammad Ali Mohammad Sabir in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. Following his arrest, he was brought before the court and sent on three days remand. When the officers checked his phone, they found Pakistani numbers. It is also suspected that he went to Pakistan earlier.

Notably, accused Shahnaz threatened four people on social media, including Sanatan Sangh National President Updesh Rana, Sudarshan News Channel Editor-in-Chief Suresh Chavanke, Hyderabad Hindu leader T Raja Singh, and Nupur Sharma, using a Nepali SIM card. Before that, the police questioned the cleric’s brother.

As reported earlier, Surat police arrested radical Islamic preacher Sohail Abu Bakar Timol on 4th May for threatening to kill Hindu activist Updesh Rana, who runs an organisation named ‘Sanatan Sangh’. He is a resident of Kathor area in Surat city of Gujarat. Surat Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot confirmed the development during a press conference. Besides working as a factory manager, Sohail serves as an Aalim (Islamic scholar) at a madrassa. He had threatened Updesh Rana over WhatsApp, following which a police complaint was filed against him.

Sohail was also planning to target ex-BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma and Hyderabad MLA T Raja Singh. The Surat Police have also found anti-Hindu content on the mobile phone of the radical Islamic preacher. The accused was reportedly in touch with handlers in Nepal and Pakistan for 1.5 years, besides people based in Indonesia, Vietnam and Kazakhstan. He used to use gaming platforms to chat with his accomplices.

‘I get pension, children do not listen to me’: Read how a clipped video of an elderly Muslim man is used to peddle ‘Darr ka Mahol’ narrative

Amid the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, a clipped video of an elderly Muslim man is being widely shared on social media to peddle the misleading narrative of ‘Darr Ka Mahol (atmosphere of fear).’

The misleading video was uploaded on X (formerly Twitter) by Islamic propagandist Alishan Jafri to allege that ordinary Muslim citizens of India are asked to go to Pakistan.

“This is our country. Our fathers and grandfathers are buried here. We will also die here along with our children. I will not go anywhere else…We are not from Pakistan but India,” the elderly Muslim man was heard saying in the clipped video.

“We do not get any help…Where do I go?” the man broke down while speaking about his condition. The video, which has been edited maliciously, gave the impression that Muslims are living in a state of fear under the incumbent Modi government.

“We need to talk more about the psychological impact of BJP’s ugly anti-Muslim campaign on ordinary Muslim citizens,” Alisha Jafri claimed while posting the video of the elderly Muslim.

However, a longer version of the same video clearly shows that the said man has not been rendered helpless by his family and not the Modi government.

The Missing Context of the Viral video

“What do I tell you? It is becoming difficult to get access to food (roti). My son and daughter-in-law tell me that there is no food for me. Where do I go to beg?”

“I have a problem with my lungs. I have to go to Mehrauli to get medicines. My children do not listen to me. I have no money and hence need to walk long distances…Where would I go?” the Muslim man cried inconsolably at the apathy of his family towards him.

“I am suffering from lung disease. One of my lungs has stopped working. Where do I go?” The reporter tried to pacify the elderly man and asked, “Do you get any help from the government?”

The man informed that he gets a pension of ₹2500 from the government, which he uses to make ends meet. As evident from the longer version of the video, the elderly Muslim man was seen complaining about the ill-treatment meted out to him by his family members.

He was miffed with his son and daughter-in-law and not the Indian government for his poor economic condition. However, this did not stop the usual propagandists from casting aspersions on the state of religious minorities (particularly Muslims) in India.

This is however not the first time that Alishan Jafri resorted to spreading canards about the BJP. He was part of the anti-Modi documentary, which was produced by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in 2023.

‘If you vote for AAP, I won’t have to go back to jail’: Arvind Kejriwal tells Delhi voters despite Supreme Court order directing him to surrender on 2nd June

On Sunday (12th May), Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal issued an appeal to the Delhi voters claiming that their “votes can save him from jail”. The AAP leader argued that if the Delhi electorates voted for the Aam Aadmi Party (resulting in the opposition bloc’s victory), he wouldn’t have to go back to jail. He made the statement during a roadshow held in Delhi. The Union Territory of Delhi has 7 Lok Sabha seats which will go to polls in the 6th phase on 25th May.

While holding a roadshow in Moti Nagar, the AAP Supremo Arvind Kejriwal said, “They (BJP) are saying that after 20 days, I will have to go back to jail. But if you all press ‘Jhadu’ (AAP’s symbol broom) button then I won’t have to go back to jail. You have the power.”

The Aam Aadmi Party also shared his remarks from the party’s official X handle.

He made the above remarks in the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s order dated 10th May which granted him conditional Interim bail for “campaigning” in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections 2024. As per the court order, the AAP leader got temporary relief for nearly three weeks as the Interim bail order had categorically directed him to surrender on 2nd June.

Notably, the counting for the general elections will take place on 4 June, 2 days after he is directed to return to Tihar jail. Therefore, even in the improbable possibility of the opposition bloc winning and withdrawing the case against Kejriwal, he will still have to surrender on 2nd June.

Netizens have slammed the AAP leader for his remarks making an apparent effort to link his surrender and subsequent legal litigation in the Delhi Liquor Policy scam case with political outcomes in Delhi. The Aam Aadmi Party and its leaders including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal have claimed that the case is a witch hunt against the party and their leaders.

Several X users have alleged that Kejriwal’s remarks are in violation of the Supreme Court’s order.

It is pertinent to note that while the AAP leader has claimed that Delhi voters can “save him from going to jail”, “if Delhi electorates voted for AAP, he wouldn’t have to go back to jail’, the judicial outcome (guilty or innocent – jail or no jail) in criminal cases is independent of the power, post, and authority the accused holds. In legal jurisprudence, only ‘evidence’ and proof of innocence or absence of guilt can safeguard a person from punitive action (jail term/fine, etc). Only the courts can provide temporary relief (bail) or injunction, or quash the case in which cases an accused wouldn’t be required to go to jail.

USA: First living patient to receive genetically modified pig kidney dies 2 months after the procedure, hospitals say no indication that the death is linked to the transplant

Richard Slayman, the first living patient to receive a genetically modified pig kidney transplant, died nearly two months after he underwent the procedure, the hospital that performed the surgery said on Saturday (11th May 2024). A day later, Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) said that there was no indication that his death was a result of the transplant.

Richard “Rick” Slayman (62) was suffering from end-stage kidney disease when he underwent an operation in March this year at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). Surgeons said they believed the pig kidney would last for at least two years.

Apart from kidney disease, Slayman also suffered from Type 2 diabetes and hypertension.

In 2018, Slayman had a human kidney transplant, but it started failing after five years, forcing him to frequently need dialysis. While transplants of other organs from genetically modified pigs have failed in the past, Slayman’s operation to receive a genetically modified pig kidney was hailed as a historic milestone. Following his operation on 16th March, his doctors confirmed that he no longer needed dialysis as the new organ was said to be functioning well.

(The genetically modified pig kidney was transplanted into Rick Slayman in March, Image Source – NBC)

According to the hospital, the pig kidney used for the transplant was provided by a Massachusetts biotech company called eGenesis. It had been genetically modified the pig kidney to remove harmful pig genes and add certain human genes.

After Slayman’s demise, in a statement, MGH said, “Mr Slayman will forever be seen as a beacon of hope to countless transplant patients worldwide and we are deeply grateful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation.”

MGH said it was “deeply saddened” at his sudden death and offered condolences to his family. While his relatives said his story was an inspiration.

They noted, “Rick said that one of the reasons he underwent this procedure was to provide hope for the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive. Rick accomplished that goal and his hope and optimism will endure forever.”

Xenotransplantation

Xenotransplantation refers to healing human patients by transplanting living cells, tissues, or organs from one species (animals) to another. Several efforts in the past to perform xenotransplantation have failed because the human immune system immediately destroys foreign animal tissue. As a result, recent attempts have involved genetically modified pig organs.

While Slayman is the first living patient to receive the genetically modified pig kidney transplant, earlier pig kidneys had been temporarily transplanted into brain-dead donors.

Additionally, surgeons in the past have also attempted to transplant other pig organs into the human body. Two other patients had received pig heart transplants. However, those procedures were unsuccessful as the recipients died a few weeks later. In one case, there were signs that the patient’s immune system had rejected the organ, which is a common risk in transplants.

Meanwhile, organ shortages are a chronic problem around the world. As per an estimate, over 3 lakh patients are on the waiting list for organ donations in India. Approximately 20 individuals die daily while awaiting organ transplants due to the shortage.

Uttar Pradesh: Shadab, Shoaib molest minor Dalit girl, blackmail her using explicit pics, hurl casteist language and threaten to kill entire family

A girl from the Dalit community was reportedly molested by a man in the Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh, according to the authorities on 12th May. The victim is a minor whose father has lodged a complaint against Shadab and Shoaib. In the complaint, he disclosed that he is a resident of a Muslim-dominated area and the accused have harassed several other girls there. The incident transpired on 28th April and the police registered a First Information Report on 10th May and started investigation.

The case pertains to the Masuri police station area of Ghaziabad. A Dalit living in the area submitted a complaint on 10th May in which he mentioned that he belongs to a predominantly Muslim neighbourhood. Shadab and Shoaib also live there. They are vagabonds who misbehave, molest and sexually harass many girls in the village. The complainant asserted that both have been dodging legal action because they are financially strong.

They began molesting the complainant’s underage daughter for a few days. She faced obscene behaviour from the pair whenever she went somewhere. In addition to forcing her to accept their number, they started pushing her for marriage. They began taking offensive photos of her and used them to blackmail her. He charged that Shoaib and Shadab were enticing his daughter with malicious intent. Additionally, they were relentlessly calling his daughter.

The complaint further highlighted that the girl was en route to a location on 28th April. Meanwhile, the duo exposed her to more lewd acts once again after which she became upset and narrated the entire ordeal to her brother, the next day. On 30th April he called Shadab and asked him not to molest his sister, but the admonition had no effect on him. On the other hand, the offenders used casteist slurs and mistreated the Dalit boy.

According to the complaint, Shadab and Shoaib also threatened to eliminate the victim’s entire family over the phone and revealed that the accused had previously been the subject of many complaints. Afterwards, the police placed the victim’s and both of the accused’s phones in evidence and lodged charges against the latter for breach of peace. The father has sought stern punishment against Shadab and Shoaib, calling the action insufficient.

The police have registered an FIR against Shadab and Shoaib under sections 354, 354 (a), 504 and 506 of the Indian Penal Code besides the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Both Muslim males are alleged to have absconded after the complaint was submitted and their whereabouts are being probed. The girl’s statement was recorded by the cops on 11th May. She would soon appear in court to record her statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure. OpIndia has a copy of the complaint.

They want us to leave

OpIndia spoke to the complainant who unveiled that they are facing a lot of harassment in the Muslim-dominated village. The victim’s father voiced that rape cases are already registered against the accused. When inquired about the reason behind their heinous actions he expressed, “They want us to leave our house.” He identified himself as a devotee of Lord Shiva and raised concerns for his son’s safety. We were also informed that numerous Muslims have been pressuring the Dalit family to compromise.

Shoaib is a buffalo thief

The father declared that he won’t withdraw the case at all. When we questioned whether the elders of the Muslim community don’t talk to the culprits and try to reason with them he conveyed, “If they did, why would we have to suffer through all this?” Notably, Shoaib who is named as the second accused is an infamous cattle-smuggler in the area. An official complaint has already been registered against him regarding the theft of buffalos. The complainant stated that he was guaranteed complete security and the authorities were actively looking into his case.

“It is embarrassing”: Japanese economists and analysts in shock after IMF predicted that India will overtake Japan by 2025 to become 4th largest economy

In late April 2024, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimates revealed that India’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in Nominal terms will reach $4.34 trillion in 2025 while Japan’s GDP will be at $4.31 trillion. With this, India will overtake Japan to become the World’s 4th largest economy by next year. Incidentally, New Delhi’s jump to fourth place comes a year earlier than predicted by the IMF in its last estimate, partly because of a fall in the Japanese currency, Yen.

As per reports, the announcement of India surpassing Japan by next year has shocked Tokyo. It has initiated a churn among the economists and strategists in the country that used to be the undisputed 2nd-largest economy in the world till 2010 but will soon slip to fifth place behind the US, China, Germany, and India.

The chief policy economist for Fujitsu’s Global Market Intelligence Unit, Martin Schulz said, “For Japan, this is a very big concern — but few people are talking about it openly because it is embarrassing and very difficult to solve.”

According to Schulz, when Shinzo Abe became the Prime Minister in 2012, he correctly recognised the problems Japan was facing at that time and announced sweeping plans to lift Japanese growth. These plans were dubbed as “Abenomics”. Two of his “three arrows” of the policy — monetary easing by the Bank of Japan and fiscal stimulus through government spending – achieved success. However, the third arrow, of structural reforms, fell short.

Schulz added, “The whole idea of Abenomics was to drive growth at businesses, but structural reforms were also needed to push productivity, but that is very hard to do in a country that is aging and where there is resistance to change, to digitalisation and people who have been in positions for a long time simply prefer the old ways.”

As per Japanese strategists, the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s war in Ukraine have had a similar impact on Japan’s economy that is still being felt as it is felt elsewhere. Other indicators point out a more acute problem for the Japanese economy.

Recently, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) released its latest report on 2nd May on the outlook for global economic growth. As per the estimates, the world would grow at 3.1%, up from 2.9% in its February report. However, it has cut Japan’s growth estimates from the 1% it had projected three months earlier to just 0.5%. In May, the OECD predicted India to grow at 6.6%.

Global strategist and managing director of Nikko Asset Management in Tokyo, Naomi Fink stressed that some of Japan’s economic malaise can be linked to the three “lost decades” of stagnant economic growth.

Speaking with DW, Fink argued that developed economies tend to grow slower than emerging economies like India. She said, “It’s altogether normal for developed countries to grow more slowly than emerging markets — they have less growing to do before they hit a growth equilibrium, and they typically have aging populations, even with a degree of inward migration.”

Fink added that Japan could not match India’s investment in infrastructure and a rapidly growing middle class. She pointed out that Germany had surpassed Japan primarily because of the fall in the Japanese currency yen against the euro over the last 12 years. Yen saw a decline of 40% which put the real exchange rate effectively at a 50-year low.

Schulz pointed out that the feeble yen is arguably the Japanese government’s greatest challenge at the moment. “The yen is becoming a major problem and while in the past if governments did nothing it would bounce back, that is not happening this time,” he said.

He noted that market intervention has been “futile” and will remain that way for as long as interest rates remain static.

While the Japanese strategists express concern over slipping in the leaders tally, Former NITI Aayog CEO lists out how major structural reforms by the Modi government drove India’s surge

Amitabh Kant was India’s Sherpa during the country’s G20 Presidency and served as the Former CEO of NITI Aayog, the apex public policy think tank of the Government of India.

While lauding PM Modi’s leadership for bringing structural reforms, he listed major achievements of the Modi government that catapulted India from Fragile 5 in 2013 to the Top 5 Economies of the world in 2024.

Tamil Nadu police arrests YouTuber Felix Gerald of Red Pix for interviewing YouTuber Savukku Shankar

On 10th May, Trichy district cyber crime police arrested YouTuber Felix Gerald of Red Pix from Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Gerald was arrested for interviewing popular YouTuber Savukku Shankar who was earlier arrested for allegedly speaking against senior police officers and a female police personnel. It was claimed that Shankar spoke in an objectionable manner about the officials.

Gerald was arrested on a complaint by Musiri DSP MA Yasmin. A special police team led by SP RV Varun Kumar was dispatched from Trichy to arrest Gerald. A case was registered against Shankar following the complaint of Musiri DSP, FIR was registered against Shankar for making derogatory remarks against women police personnel during an interview with Gerald. When Gerald was arrested, he was trying to submit a petition to the chairman of the Press Club of India over Shankar’s arrest.

Notably, Gerald approached the Madras High Court and sought anticipatory bail. During the last hearing, Justice Kumaresh Babu observed that Felix Gerald should have been made the first accused in the case as he “prompted Shankar to make the objectionable comments”.

The court also observed that YouTube channels were becoming a menace to society. Justice Babu suggested that action should be taken against interviewers who push interviewers to make derogatory or objectionable comments.

Following his arrest, Gerald was produced in a local magistrate court for a transit warrant. He was transported to Trichy via train. He would reach Trichy on the evening of 12th May or the morning of 13th May.

Savukku Shankar was allegedly beaten in jail

Earlier, it was reported that Shankar was beaten in Coimbatore jail. Savukku Shankar’s counsel claimed that Shankar’s right hand was fractured in an assault on the night of 4th May, after he was remanded in prison in judicial custody, and that no adequate treatment was provided to him. The counsel claimed that on Saturday night, the jail staff, numbering roughly ten people, blindfolded Savukku Shankar and attacked him with plastic pipes wrapped in clothing. He claimed that Shankar was compelled to take painkillers without his consent. Shankar was sent to police remand till 17th May.

He was booked under Sections 294(b), 509 and 353 IPC r/w section 4 of Tamilnadu prohibition of harassment of Woman Act and section 67 of Information Technology Act,2000. Savukku Shankar, a former employee of the vigilance department, was earlier sentenced to 6 months in jail for a contempt of court case by the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court. In 2008, he was jailed by the DMK government for leaking a conversation between two top officials.

Congress, Left and TMC have put identity of Bengal at stake for vote bank politics, TMC leaders threatening Hindus: PM Modi

0

Launching a sharp attack on the Trinamool Congress-led government in West Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday accused TMC leaders of threatening Hindus in the state, adding that Congress, Left and TMC have put the identity of Bengal at stake for “vote bank politics”.

While addressing a public meeting in Howrah, PM Modi said, “Congress, Left and TMC have put the identity of Bengal at stake for vote bank politics. TMC MLAs are threatening Hindus. They say that there are a few Hindus left here, and we will drown the Hindus in Bhagirathi. Notably, it’s utterly shameful that TMC is still protecting them. Such a game of appeasement, such a gesture of inhumanity is absolutely unfortunate.”

He further slammed the TMC government for protecting the culprits involved in the alleged incident of woman molestation and sexual harassment in Sandeshkhali.

“Today our sisters are not safe under the TMC government. Women are being tortured here. What happened in Sandeshkhali? The whole country saw it. The entire TMC government was engaged in saving the culprits of our daughters. Today the accused is in the custody of CBI but TMC is still batting for him,” PM Modi said.

PM Modi continued his attack on the state government and said, “People of Bengal are unable to exercise their right to Freedom of Expression due to TMC’s oppressive tactics. TMC has suppressed the voices of the citizens of Bengal.”

Coming down heavily on the state government, the Prime Minister said that the Congress’ corruption, nepotism, appeasement and the Left’s tyranny and anarchy, together combined to form the TMC.

“Congress’s corruption, Congress’s nepotism and Congress’s appeasement and secondly Left, Left’s tyranny and anarchy, if we put all these evils together then only TMC is formed. Our Howrah is witnessing how Congress, Left and TMC have destroyed Bengal,” he said.

“The way TMC is looting Bengal is a great sin. Teacher recruitment scam, coal scam, chit fund scam, ration scam. What a long list it is. TMC has not even spared our farmers. TMC loots paddy farmers in the markets,” PM Modi added.

He further targeted Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over the ‘inheritance tax’ row and said that the ‘Shehzada’ of the Congress party wanted to get everyone’s property in the country investigated.

“These people are talking about usurping half of your property even after you die. The ‘Shehzada’ is saying that he will impose an inheritance tax. The Congress party is also talking about giving SC-ST-OBC reservations to Muslims,” PM Modi said.

“There is a competition of appeasement going on between TMC and Congress. The ‘Shehzada’ of the Congress party wants to get everyone’s property in the country investigated. Your earnings will be distributed among those who go for ‘Vote Jihad’ for the INDI Alliance,” he added.

PM Modi alleged that the TMC is not allowing poor people to get central government benefits.

“The TMC government is trying to loot even the central schemes. The BJP government gives Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to the poor. Still, here the TMC government releases money only to those who are either associated with TMC or give a ‘cut’ to the TMC people. These people are not allowing other poor people to get the benefits of our schemes,” he said.

“Earlier, parties used to take your votes but after forming the government, their language changed. When you used to go to the leader, the leader used to say, who are you? Modi has changed this thinking. Today the BJP government at the Center is reaching the doorstep of every citizen of the country. And that is why today crores of people of Bengal are getting free ration so that no poor mother is forced to see her children hungry,” PM Modi added.

Voting will take place for eight Lok Sabha seats of West Bengal in the fourth phase of voting to be held on May 13. The constituencies are Baharampur, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Bardhaman Purba, Burdwan-Durgapur, Asansol, Bolpur and Birbhum.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the BJP came up winning 18 seats against the TMC’s 22. The Congress’s tally dropped to just 2 seats, while the Left scored a blank.

Dichotomy of Krishnanagar: Dharmakshetra of the Past, Modern-Day Mahua-Mess

The proverbial vaults of civilizational capital are what give an idea of how well a place is progressing (or not). For Poschimbongo, Krishnanagar happens to be a key bastion of socio-cultural heritage and civilizational importance, within the larger backdrop of Nadia. Nabadwip, an ancient town situated within the Nadia district, is renowned for its rich intellectual and cultural heritage, earning it the moniker “Oxford of Bengal.” This historic town holds significant importance as the birthplace of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, a revered figure in Hinduism. Nabadwip also served as the cradle for the development of the Navya Nyaya system, a prominent Indian school of logic that flourished in the 15th century, producing eminent logicians.

Throughout its history, Nabadwip has been a seat of political power, serving as the capital of Bengal under the rule of Ballal Sen and later Lakshman Sen, the kings of the Sena Empire, who reigned from 1159 to 1206. The district of Nadia, which includes Nabadwip, also witnessed pivotal historical events, such as the British defeat of Siraj ud-Daulah, and the Nawab of Bengal, at the Battle of Plassey. Additionally, the village of Chaugacha in Krishnanagar, Nadia, was the starting point of the 1859 revolt against European Indigo planters. Nadia’s historical significance extends beyond its borders, as the district is believed to have maintained trade relations with neighbouring regions, including Tibet, Nepal, and Bhutan, underscoring its strategic position as a hub of commerce and cultural exchange in the past. Krishnanagar, in Nadia, has a celebrated cultural heritage — from the melodious Kabi Gaan of Nakashipara to the divine Raasleela performed in Tehatta and Palashipara. One can revel in the soul-stirring Baul folk songs that echo through the fields of Krishnanagar and are spiritually enriched by the Padabali Kirtans that pierce through all the vagaries of life, to show us that we are one people – Bharatiya.

Remembering Shri Dwijendralal Ray, we take pride in his contributions to our nationalistic and cultural identity through his songs and plays. In honouring Shri Narayan Sanyal, we recognize the importance of literature in shaping societal values. Reflecting on the entrepreneurial spirit of Shri Bipradas Palchoudhury, we acknowledge his vision for Swadeshi and self-reliance—a vision that aligns with our Make in India initiative. This program has been instrumental in revitalizing India’s industrial sector, inviting both local and international investment that respects and uplifts our commitment to self-sustenance and economic independence. And most importantly, in promoting Atmanirbharata.

Finally, celebrating Shri Basanta Sinha Roy, whose bravery and determination mirror our national ethos, there has been vigorous support for sports and physical education from the Union Government, emphasizing the importance of fitness and resilience in our youth. On the flip side, the representation of Krishnanagar in the Parliament has been done by, arguably, one of the most infamous TMC leaders of the day – Mahua Moitra. In this country, freedom of speech and the idea of liberalism has been misused by the Opposition. Mohua Moitra notoriously said that Ma Kali is a meat-eating, alcohol-accepting Goddess. To contextualize this, we have to look at this statement along with others by INDI alliance leaders. Udayanidhi Stalin’s rant against Sanatana Dharma is common knowledge. Fateh Bahadur Singh of the Rashtriya Janata Dal recently asked where Ma Durga was when the Britishers destroyed Bharat. The question in front of the country is: do we want to side with such Adharmic, shameless politicians, who use motifs of religion and spirituality for their politicking? Do we want to side with those who do not understand Bharat and still want to lead it?

Then there is the most ubiquitous systemic-termite of all: corruption. West Bengal has become the private ATM – Appease, Thieve and Mutate centre of the Trinamool Congress. They pick and choose and take whatever they want to. Recently, the ED arrested TMC MLA Manik Bhattacharya (Palashipara Vidhan Sabha) in a recruitment scam case. The entire state machinery seems to be implicit in the cash-for-jobs scam, and that may just be the beginning. The Sandeshkhali scandal showed how entrenched some of the TMC henchmen are, especially in the critical Sunderban belt, with various avenues of corruption used, such as that by the fishery mafia. Mamata Banerjee has increasingly become more paranoid by the day. She is talking of Ram Navami as a day for others instigating riots. Who are these others? Are we not one nation? Are we not one people? This us-vs-them debate is a toxic one that Didi is using for her electoral advantage. Who is `hers’? The Bangladeshi vote banks that she is meticulously engineering or the rural poor whom she exploits and then appeases with some freebies occasionally? She is so paranoid that she even divides the Nadia district. It is unacceptable that residents outside Krishnanagar Sadar are left with inadequate healthcare facilities. While Krishnanagar Sadar Hospital is overwhelmed, the people suffer daily.

The unchecked flow of drugs into our communities, particularly from international borders like Nepal and Bangladesh, has devastated the youth of Bengal. Under TMC’s watch, places like Tentulberia have become hubs for narcotics without any substantial crackdown. As we approach the General elections voting in the region, it is important to evaluate the performance of the current MP – Mahua Moitra, whose tenure has been marked by unfulfilled promises and missed opportunities. Essential projects like the rail over-bridge in Krishnanagar Beledanga, bridges over the Jalangi River, and a crucial Tuberculosis Hospital remain incomplete, leaving the people of the region waiting. Conservation efforts for the Jalangi River have been ignored, and public safety has been compromised, with no action to address rising communal disturbances. The once-promised revitalization of the weaving industry in Dhaniakhali has not materialized, affecting thousands of livelihoods. Additionally, proposed economic boosters like the power loom in Belur remain stalled.

The repeated instances of communal unrest and the dominance of anti-social elements in various villages show a breakdown of law and order. The insensitivity shown by Mamata Banerjee towards the Matua community is deeply troubling. A CM who cannot even pronounce Harichand Guruchand Tagore’s name during a speech has clearly no interest in serving the community or respecting them. The appeasement of the Matua community is one of various such policies in Didi’s marketplace of appeasement: where there are packages of all shapes and sizes, customized to what helps her win the most electoral votes in a specific election! On the other hand, even with Didi not allowing many of the central schemes to come through to Poschimbongo, there has been development under the aegis of national policies.

Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, both urban and rural, the BJP has made significant strides in ensuring that every family has a roof over their head in Nadia. With nearly 6,000 houses completed in urban areas and over 14,000 in rural settings, the commitment to housing security stands unmatched. The One Nation, One Ration Card scheme has revolutionized food security in Nadia, ensuring that 35 lakh people under NFSA benefit regardless of their location within India, promoting national unity and support for our citizens. Through the Jal Jeevan Mission, the Union government has succeeded in providing tap water to over 8 lakh households in Nadia, the highest in West Bengal, demonstrating the government’s commitment to improving quality of life for every citizen. Under the National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, the Union government has issued 7.61 lakh job cards, securing livelihoods and supporting the backbone of our economy — our rural communities.

Through initiatives like Ayushman Bharat and the establishment of AIIMS in Kalyani, the BJP is working towards ensuring that top-notch healthcare facilities are accessible to all, reducing the burden on families and enhancing the health and well-being of our populace. Major projects like the expansion of NH-34 and the construction of the Krishnanagar-Berhampore Highway are testament to the commitment to enhance connectivity and boost economic growth. These infrastructural developments are crucial for facilitating commerce and improving daily life for millions. An exciting development has taken place, civilizational speaking, in Mayapur, with the construction of the world’s largest religious monument, the Temple of Vedic Planetarium, which not only showcases our rich cultural heritage but also promotes tourism, creating numerous job opportunities and boosting the local economy.

The choice for Nadia in General Elections 2024 seems to be an interesting one. This is a choice that would reshape the fate of the state. But most importantly, this is a choice that would either maintain or disrupt civilizational continuity. Poshchimbongo needs a Double Engine Sarkaar, but for now, it needs a Mahua-less Krishnanagar and a post-Didi parliament!
