Punjab: Drug addict auto-rickshaw driver arrested for killing Arjuna Awardee DSP Dalbir Singh

On Wednesday (3rd January), drug-addict auto-rickshaw driver Vijay Kumar was arrested for killing Arjuna Awardee DSP Dalbir Singh on 31st December in Jalandhar in Punjab. DSP Dalbir Singh’s dead body was found abandoned near a canal at Basti Bawa Khel on the outskirts of Jalandhar.

The service revolver of DSP Dalbir Singh and bullets were recovered from the arrested accused Vijay Kumar. The accused killed DSP Dalbir Singh after a minor scuffle over dropping him home.

The body of DSP Dalbir Singh was discovered by passers-by near a canal in Basti Bawa Khel on the outskirts of Jalandhar, early on the morning of 1st January. His identification card, found close to his body, led to police learning his identity.

It is understood that DSP Dalbir Singh had departed from his home accompanied by three acquaintances and was last seen near the bus stand late at night. After that, his location remained unknown until his body was found, bearing multiple injuries and a bullet wound in the head.

Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma said, “The auto driver, who has been arrested, is the main suspect in the murder of the DSP. The accused was a drug addict and had earlier been in rehab. That night, the accused was intoxicated and allegedly shot the Arjuna awardee DSP after a minor scuffle over dropping him home.”

The Commissioner further said, “We found the body of Dalbir Singh Deol on the morning of New Year’s Day under suspicious circumstances. The place where his body was found is 6-7 kilometres from Jalandhar. We have arrested an autorickshaw driver, Vijay Kumar, in the case.”

He added, “The driver refused to drop the police officer to his village which led to a scuffle. Amid the argument, Vijay snatched the service pistol from Mr Deol and fired on his head, leading to his death.”

Punjab’s director general of police Gaurav Yadav said in an X post, “Punjab Police solves blind murder case of Late DSP Dalbir Singh. Commissionerate of Police Jalandhar has worked out the case in 2 days with the arrest of the culprit and seizure of the murder weapon May his soul RIP! Our prayers are with the family, relatives and everyone who worked with him.”

The police have obtained CCTV footage showing DSP Dalbir Singh taking an auto from the bus stand. Singh was posted to the Punjab Armed Police headquarters in Jalandhar. After a postmortem report revealed a bullet wound in Dalbir Singh’s head, the authorities filed charges under Sections 302 (murder) and 379-B (snatching) of the Indian Penal Code, along with relevant sections of the Arms Act.

On 1st January, when the death of the officer was first reported, the police looked at it as a hit-and-run case. However, when the doctors checked the dead body in a mortuary at Jalandhar Civil Hospital, they found a bullet injury at the back of the head. The postmortem report concluded that DSP Dalbir Singh was shot in the head from point-blank range. Now, the mystery of this murder is solved as the police have arrested the accused drug-addict auto-rickshaw driver.

NCP’s Jitendra Awhad apologises for remark, yet claims scriptures mention Lord Ram eating meat: What Ayodhya temple priest said rubbishing his claims

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) veteran and leader of opposition in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Jitendra Awhad courted a massive controversy after he claimed that Lord Ram used to eat meat and he belongs to ‘Bahujans’. Now he has come forward with an apology amid the row and expressed regret over his statement. He acknowledged that mistakes are occasionally committed and stated that he didn’t want to aggravate the situation.

However, Awhad claimed that Valkimi’s Ramayana consists of many sections including one on Ayodhya and there is a mention of his assertion in verse number 102. He mentioned that he cited from the authentic version published in 1891 which was printed in Kolkata and IIT Kanpur did extensive analysis on it. He argued, “I don’t say anything without research but I don’t want to exacerbate the issue. A lot of individuals have been hurt. I respect people’s sentiments and apologise if someone has been offended by my comment. I am sorry. Sometimes mistakes happen.”

Awhad announced that he isn’t scared of any legal complaints and further accused, “Those who cannot talk logically will talk about cases against me, but those who chant ‘Ram Ram’, I want to tell them that Ram stays in our hearts.” However, he was adamant that he quoted from the sacred scriptures.

“Ram is ours. Ram belongs to the Bahujans. Ram who hunts and eats is ours. We belong to the Bahujans. When you people go to make us all vegetarian, we follow the ideals of Ram and today we eat mutton. This is the ideal of Ram. Ram was not a vegetarian, he was a non-vegetarian,” the politician from the party’s Sharad Pawar group had declared at a program in Shirdi on 3rd January. “Where would a person living in the forest for 14 years go to find vegetarian food? Is it correct or not (question to the public)? Tell me when I am telling the truth,” he added.

The former minister in the state cabinet only credited Jawahar Lala Nehru and Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi with spearheading India’s liberation movement. “No matter what someone says, the truth is that we got independence only because of Gandhi and Nehru. Gandhiji was not assassinated in 1947, but the first attack on him took place in 1935, the second attack took place in 1938 and the third attack took place in 1942. After all, why did they attack him so many times,” he questioned and claimed, “He (Gandhi) didn’t care about time. He didn’t even care about the Constitution. But he was attacked because Gandhiji was a tradesman and an OBC (Other Backward Class). The fact that the leader of such a big independence movement was an OBC was not acceptable to them (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh).”

A few days before the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on 22nd January, his comments prompted severe condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party which also submitted a complaint against him for making objectionable remarks against Lord Ram. BJP MLA Ram Kadam stated that if Balasaheb Thackeray had been alive, the Saamana newspaper of the Shiv Sena would have questioned the NCP leader’s statement. “However, at present the party is indifferent to such sentiments outside of election seasons when they promote Hindutva,” Ram Kadam added.

The chief priest of Shri Ram Janmbhoomi Teerth Kshetra, Acharya Satyendra Das, disputed the claims. “What NCP leader Jitendra Awhad is speaking is completely false. It isn’t written anywhere in our scriptures that Lord Ram had non-vegetarian food during his exile. It’s written that he used to have fruits”, he added.

Maharashtra: Mumbai police book Aditya Thackeray’s close aide contractor Rahul Gomes in Covid Jumbo Center scam case

On Wednesday (3rd January), the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai police registered an FIR against contractor Rahul Gomes in the Covid Jumbo Center scam case. Rahul Gomes is a close aide of Shiv Sena (UBT) MLA Aditya Thackeray. This FIR is about the alleged irregularities in the contracts for setting up jumbo centres at Mulund and Dahisar.

BMC contractor Rahul Gomes of Oaks Management Consultancy Pvt Ltd, his vendors, and then unidentified civic officers are booked in this FIR for an alleged fraud of Rs 37-38 Crores. Primarily, this case was booked at the Tardeo police station. It was later transferred to the EOW of the Mumbai Police.

Shilpa Thenge, Assistant Inspector (EOW) has filed this complaint based on which the FIR was registered. In the FIR, she said, “It has been alleged that between October 2020 and August 2022, while taking amounts as rent for these jumbo centres the accused contractor with a fraudulent intention allegedly submitted false information and bills to the BMC. The contractor in connivance and conspiracy with the BMC officers and the vendors got these false and (inflated) bills cleared and made wrongful gains worth Rs 37 crore. Thus, defrauding the government.”

All the accused in this case are booked under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 409 (criminal breach of trust by a public servant, banker, merchant, or agent), 420 (cheating), and 120 B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The Economic Offence Wing may summon the accused BMC contractor Rahul Gomes, his vendors, and others implicated in this case anytime soon for interrogation.

Oaks Management Consultancy Pvt Ltd of Rahul Gomes contributed to the COVID-19 relief measures by supplying beds, fans, tents, and various amenities at field hospitals located in Dahisar, Worli, MMRDA (Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authorities), Mulund, and BKC (Bandra-Kurla Complex) part-2. Following the establishment of substantial centres in Dahisar and Mulund, the company transferred control of these facilities to the BMC. It is alleged that during this process, Oaks Management Consultancy Pvt Ltd charged the civic body excessively high rents.

In July 2023, the Enforcement Directorate conducted raids on locations associated with Rahul Gomes. It’s anticipated that the ED will shortly initiate an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) and investigate potential money laundering activities related to the case.

BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had earlier raised this matter and filed complaints against Rahul Gomes and others in connection with the alleged corruption during the COVID-19 Pandemic. Former Mumbai Mayor and Uddhav Thackeray faction leader Kishori Pednekar was also implicated in a case regarding the Covid Jumbo Center scam.

USA: Violent criminal jumps over courtroom bench to attack the Judge in Las Vegas court, video viral

In a violent episode caught on video, a man who had been rejected probation, launched an attack on a judge during his sentencing in a Nevada courthouse on Wednesday (3rd January).

Deobra Redden, 30, appeared in court in Las Vegas on Wednesday morning (local time) for a sentencing hearing after pleading guilty to attempted violence with significant bodily damage, according to a spokesman for the Eighth Judicial District Court in a statement.

Redden is seen jumping over a courtroom bench onto Judge Mary Kay Holthus in a video of the hearing that has since then gone viral on social media. Flags behind the bench are seen falling to the ground. The bench hides Judge Holthus and Redden from view for a few seconds in the video while cursing can be heard in the background. Three men can be observed seconds later attempting to overpower Redden while striking him repeatedly for attacking the judge.

“Judge Holthus, 62, was injured, and her condition is being monitored, the court spokeswoman said. A court marshal was also injured and taken to a hospital, where he was believed to be in stable condition,” the spokeswoman said.

“We commend the heroic acts of her staff, law enforcement, and all others who subdued the defendant,” the Eighth Judicial District Court said in a statement. “The court remains committed to a safe and secure courthouse and courtrooms. We are reviewing all our protocols and will do whatever is necessary to protect the judiciary, the public, and our employees,” it added.

The Police Department said in a statement that did not name anyone engaged in the incident that two victims were transferred to the University Medical Centre with non-life-threatening injuries and that the suspect was in custody.

Redden’s counsel requested Judge Holthus to sentence him to probation just before he jumped over the bench. “I appreciate that, but I think it’s time he gets a taste of something else. I just can’t with that history,” Judge Holthus said as she refused probation considering the criminal background of Redden.

According to court records, Redden has already served time in jail, notably in 2015, when he was sentenced to a minimum of 19 months in prison for attempted theft. According to Nevada Department of Corrections records, Redden spent time in 2021 as well for domestic assault.

As per the Eighth Judicial District Court, Judge Holthus joined the Clark County bench in January 2019 after serving for almost 27 years in the district attorney’s office in Clark County.

Visitors are searched for guns and other unlawful objects before entering a Clark County courthouse, according to the rules of the Eighth Judicial District Court. In addition, visitors are asked to sit quietly in the courtroom.

Courthouses are typically secured, but in certain cases, security officers have also been targeted. According to the Justice Department, a man was previously sentenced to 46 months in prison last year for attacking a court security officer at the Lloyd D. George Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas in 2022.

“Will keep appealing Muslim brothers to avenge Babri demolition by kafir Hindus”: UP ATS nabs Jibran Makrani, 24, from Jhansi for threats to Ram Mandir

0

The Uttar Pradesh anti-terror squad (UP ATS) has arrested 24-year-old Jibran Makrani from UP’s Jhansi city for issuing threats and attempting to incite people ahead of the Ram Mandir inauguration and Pran Pratishtha ceremony on 22nd January.

It was learnt that the X account through which the threats were issued was being run by a Hafiz Jibran Makrani, son of Israr Makrani from Jhansi.

According to a press note released on 3rd January by the UP ATS, cyber patrolling officials flagged an inciteful post on X, formerly Twitter, from the account of @jibranMakrani1. “We will not let go of a single masjid, if a masjid is snatched from us by force then be ready to face the consequences, Babri masjid is also ours and will always be ours,” the post read.

Press noe issued by Uttar Pradesh ATS

The press note read that the post clearly shows that it is intended to create communal disharmony, increase religious animosity and spread frenzy. The post was deleted by Jibran when he was first called for questioning. At the time he was not carrying his phone with him. When he returned with his phone, the X post was found to be deleted.

According to the FIR, Jibran said that he wanted his Muslim brothers to demolish the Ram Mandir and rebuild a grand Babri masjid again. He said that he was successful in achieving the goal behind his posts.

“Insha allah whenever I get the chance in the future too I will keep appealing my Muslim brothers through my Twitter (X) handle and other social media handles to avenge Babri masjid demolition against the kafir Hindus. I am proud of my work,” he said.

When questioned by the UP ATS about the post, Jibran said that he put out the post with the intention to take revenge for Babri masjid and for Muslim brothers to raze Ram Mandir to the ground. “Like our ancestors had done,” he said referring to the demolition of the Ram Mandir by Mughal tyrant Babur.

Press note issued by UP ATS

Data accessed from Jibran’s phone showed screenshots of posts by different people including posts on the demolition of Babri masjid, posts supporting terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel and posts supporting the Popular Front of India (PFI).

When questioned about the screenshots of such contentious posts, Jibran said that he is upset with the “atrocities against Muslim brothers” and that he reposts the contents of such screenshots on his X handle in order to promote wide and far the inciteful posts amongst his Muslim brothers.

This comes a day after the UP Police Special Task Force (STF) apprehended two individuals for issuing bomb threats targeting the Shri Ram Temple, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and the chief of UP STF.

Former Lok Sabha MP Mahua Moitra withdraws her plea from Delhi High Court challenging the order to evacuate government bungalow

On Thursday (4th January) former Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra withdrew her plea from the Delhi High Court challenging the order that asked her to vacate the government bungalow in Delhi. Mahua Moitra will now go to the union government’s Director of Estates to seek permission to live in the provided accommodation facility till the results of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections of 2024.

Justice Subramonium Prasad clarified that the court has not made any observations on the merits of the case. The court directed the government to take steps to evict her only following the law. The court also said that it will be open to the Directorate of Estates to apply its mind to the facts and circumstances of the case.

On 11th December 2023, Mahua Moitra was asked to vacate the bungalow by 7th January 2024 following her expulsion from the Lok Sabha. This order was issued by the Union Government’s Directorate of Estates. Mahua Moitra approached the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court against this order.

In the last hearing on 19th December in this case, the Delhi High Court refused to pass a stay order. During the hearing, Justice Subramonium Prasad noted that a similar plea was submitted by Moitra in the Supreme Court, hence, any orders passed by the High Court could amount to impinging on the apex court’s proceedings. Justice Prasad said, “You have challenged the order by filing a writ petition. One of the prayers can be a stay of the order. If the Supreme Court grants a stay in your favour, your suspension will be stayed. If we adjudicate on this, it will be directly impinging on the SC proceedings.” Justice Prasad had then listed the matter for 4th January 2024.

Mahuagate: TMC MP Mahua Moitra expelled over ‘cash for query’

On 8th December, Lok Sabha expelled Trinamool Congress’s MP Mahua Moitra based on the recommendations of the Ethics Committee in the cash-for-query case. Moitra was expelled hours after the Ethics Committee report was tabled in Lok Sabha.

On 14th October, BJP MP Nishkant Dubey wrote to the ethics committee seeking an inquiry against TMC MP Mahua Moitra in the ‘Cash for Query’ matter. He based his complaint on the letter written by Supreme Court lawyer Jai Anant Dehadrai, who alleged that most of the questions asked by the TMC MP in Lok Sabha directly or indirectly benefit businessman Darshan Hiranandani. Dehadrai also accused Moitra of “kidnapping” his pet dog Henry, adding another layer of complications to Mahuagate.

Moitra filed a case against Dubey and Dehadrai but never denied accepting gifts. Interestingly, she has also been accused of sharing her Lok Sabha credentials with Hiranandani so he can post questions independently. Hiranandani has reportedly turned approver in the case and submitted an affidavit suggesting the allegations against Moitra are true.

Another scam in Delhi: LG VK Saxena recommends CBI probe into lab tests prescribed at mohalla clinics after inquiry found massive irregularities

Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has requested that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquire into free laboratory examinations performed at Aam Aadmi Party government-run mohalla clinics. This development came after the health department’s preliminary evaluation of impact research revealed “massive irregularities” in the procedure. Thousands of “ghost patients who probably did not even exist” were reportedly recommended free laboratory tests as part of a random impact analysis that was carried out at seven mohalla clinics.

The investigation, based on officials, was required when it was discovered that the doctors assigned to these seven mohalla clinics spread across the South-West, Shahdara, and North-East districts would not show for duty and would instead record their presence on bio-metric systems using pre-recorded videos. While some doctors would reach the clinics well after others and yet record full attendance, others would skip work entirely.

A source disclosed, “Last year, it emerged that doctors were not coming to mohalla clinics but were still shown as present. It was found that despite their absence, tests and medicines were being prescribed. Later, it was found that tests were conducted on ghost patients. Following this, a CBI probe has been ordered.”

A formal complaint was filed against these physicians in September 2023, leading to their de-paneling and an assessment was conducted using a sample of the lab test results from these mohalla clinics over a three-month period from July to September which was obtained from two lab service providers. An official informed, “The report of the impact assessment study conducted by the health and family department of the Delhi government reveals that there were 11,657 records at these seven mohalla clinics where patients’ mobile number was mentioned as ‘0’. In 8,251 cases, the column of the mobile number was left blank and in 3,092 cases the mobile numbers were entered as ‘9999999999’.”

Furthermore, the study unveiled that 400 entries of patients with nonexistent mobile numbers beginning with 1–5 were found, per officials and in 999 cases, the same mobile number was cited about 15 or more patients. “Since doctors at Mohalla Clinics marked attendance through pre-recorded videos, the question is who prescribed these tests and medicines to patients, non-medical staff,” asked an officer.

The residential areas of Jaffar Kalan, Ujwa, Shikarpur, Gopal Nagar, Dhansa, Jagjeet Nagar and Bihari Colony regions housed the seven mohalla clinics where the impact assessment was performed. The number of free lab tests offered at state-run hospitals and mohalla clinics was raised from 212 to 450 by the Delhi government in December 2022. According to sources, the LG requested an audit of the tests that are suggested at the health institutions to gauge the effect, even though he approved the proposal. An official from the LG’s secretariat stated, “Clearly, the directions of the LG were not complied with. The scam may run into hundreds of crores of rupees.”

According to accounts, the mohalla clinics performed fictitious pathology and radiology exams without any patients.

Notably, the Lieutenant Governor had directed the agency to conduct an additional probe into the purported provision of inferior medications to government hospitals in Delhi a few days earlier. The conclusion that these medications when tested at government and commercial laboratories were “not of standard quality” alarmed him, based on a memo he sent to the Chief Secretary. He added that these medications were being distributed to mohalla clinics and were being administered to thousands of patients at Delhi’s government hospitals.

Shramjeevi Express blast: As Hilal and Nafikul are sentenced to death, read the experience of a person who was waiting to board the ill-fated coach

A court in Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh sentenced two terrorists to death in the case of RDX blast in the Shramjeevi Express train with RDX in 2005. In that blast, 14 people were killed, and 62 people were injured. The blast in the Shramjeevi Express took place around 5.15 pm on the evening of 28th July 2005.

The two terrorists who have been sentenced to death are Hilal alias Helaluddin, a Bangladeshi terrorist associated with Harkat-ul-Jihad-ul Islami (HUJI), and Nafikul Biswas of West Bengal. The case of these two has been argued for nearly six years, on which the verdict has now been pronounced. In the same case, in the year 2016, the court sentenced two other terrorists to death, whose hearing is pending in the High Court.

The blast incident took place on 28th July 2005, when the general coach of the Shramjeevi Superfast Express running between Rajgir and New Delhi was blown up. The blast took place near the Harpalganj railway crossing. It was revealed in the investigation that two terrorists kept a suitcase filled with RDX in the train and got down from the moving train. The explosion occurred shortly after both of them landed.

When this incident happened, the author of this article was only 14 years old and had entered the 15th year the evening before. In this article, we will know what was happening at the Sultanpur railway station when this incident took place.

28th July 2005, 5 p.m.

The Shramjeevi Express was scheduled to arrive a little late from its scheduled time. The train was a little late, but the weather was good. Since I had reached the platform of Sultanpur railway station barely 10 minutes earlier, I was okay with the train being late.

However, the restlessness was growing over the next 15 minutes. In those days, the train’s arrival time at Sultanpur was around 5:15 p.m. The Shramjeevi Express is famous for its punctuality except in winter. But the train did not arrive on time that day. It seemed that it would arrive on time. But for the next half an hour, there was no update about the train.

At 5:30 p.m.

People were annoyed due to the delay of the Shramjeevi Express. They started to gossip that some accident had happened with the train. In those days, not everyone would have a mobile phone like today. Even if someone had a mobile phone, it would have basic features. It was not an internet era. The facility of text messages were available in those days. Someone got information from a text message that there had been an accident with the train. But people did not have complete information about what had happened.

By 5:45 p.m., the situation was such that no one was visible on the platform. In these 30 minutes of my life, I have lived through the stress and seen the horror on people’s faces.

And the news of the blast appeared…

As soon as the blast was confirmed in the Shramjeevi Express, people at the Sultanpur railway station started running everywhere. Meanwhile, rumours spread that the blast was carried out to blow up Sultanpur railway station. Sultanpur where the RDX attack took place near Ayodhya a month before this incident had always been a high-profile area.

Rumours spread that the general coach of the Shramjeevi Express, which is the most crowded, had a time bomb in it. The bomb timings were the same as the arrival time of the train at Sultanpur railway station. The only thing discussed by the people was that Sultanpur had now come on the hit list of the terrorists.

All these things are also unforgettable for me because I was only 14 years old then. I thought of coming to Delhi by getting a general ticket. The explosion also happened in the general coach. In that coach, which would have stood in front of me if the train was on time. I would have been passing by those toilets in the coach to enter inside. Imagine how shaken I must have been to know that if the train had been on time, I might have died in the blast.

I left the station around 6 p.m. and was passing by the district hospital. Police had arrived and were deployed everywhere. Safe corridors were also being marked. Since both Jaunpur and Sultanpur were the nearest cities to Harpalganj, the injured were sent to Jaunpur, and the seriously injured to Varanasi.

Some people were also being brought by the locals to Sultanpur District Hospital on their own. Gradually panic spread in the city. People locked themselves in their homes. I somehow managed to catch a minibus from the Sultanpur bus stand to my village. Thursday, 28th July 2005. It’s a date that will always be remembered.

Detailed information was seen in the newspapers on the next day

It was Friday morning. Very few houses in the village used to get a newspaper till 8-9 o’clock. That too is often delayed in the village. In the morning, detailed news was received that the Shramjeevi Express had been blown up with RDX. In this blast, the coach was blown away. More than 5 dozen people were badly injured, while a dozen people were killed. If the accident had happened at Sultanpur railway station, where dozens of others like me were ready to board the coach that was blown up, the number of dead and injured would be multiple times higher than this.

RDX was a common explosive used in numerous terrorist attacks leading up to 2005. For the generation that has come of age in the past decade, the terror associated with RDX might be hard to comprehend. However, back then, reports of explosions were frequent across the country. The following year saw a series of bomb blasts in Mumbai trains. Since then, thankfully, such incidents have markedly decreased. But the 2005 terrorist attack still profoundly disturbed me during each attack, stirring memories of the fear and anxiety I experienced 18 years ago.

Now that the 4 terrorists associated with this terrorist attack have been sentenced to death, there is some peace in the mind. However, it took a long time to get justice. Nobody knows when these terrorists will be hanged. I do not even know the condition of those who were killed in that blast, or those who were badly injured, and their families. Hearing this news might have stirred deep emotions in them, rekindling the terror and distress they once endured.

Despite mounting proof, Kejriwal says no scam as he skips ED summons again, blames PM Modi for trying to stop his 1 Lok Sabha MP party from campaigning in 2024

Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has skipped Enforcement Directorate’s summons for the 3rd time. ED plans to question the AAP supremo in the Delhi liquor scam, however, the Delhi CM has been evading the authorities. Sometimes, Kejriwal used the excuse of assembly elections, sometimes of Vipassana, and now of upcoming Rajya Sabha elections and Republic Day. While making time for all these things, Arvind Kejriwal has failed to make time for ED questioning.

Even though Kejriwal doesn’t have the time for ED, he obviously has time for the media. On Thursday, January 4, Arvind Kejriwal issued a statement saying, “”The truth is that there was no corruption. BJP wants to arrest me. My biggest asset is my honesty & they want to dent it. My lawyers have told me that summons sent to me are illegal.”

Arvind Kejriwal further said, “BJP’s aim is not to probe me, but not to let me campaign for Lok Sabha elections. They want to call me on the pretext of investigation and then arrest me.”

Notably, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party has 1 Lok Sabha MP and he says BJP is pulling out all the stops to stop this 1 MP party from campaigning for Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

Interestingly, while Kejriwal says there is no proof of corruption, his comrades, former Deputy CM of Delhi, Manish Sisodia (who was only removed from his post once arrested), and AAP’s Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Singh, have been languishing in jail for months under the same scam.

Despite several pleas for bail, neither Sisodia, nor Sanjay Singh have been entertained by any court. If there is no proof of corruption, maybe Kejriwal can go and explain that to the courts who are refusing to grant bail to his fellow AAP leaders, unless Kejriwal thinks BJP even runs the courts, which I doubt will go down well with the judiciary.

Notably, while denying bail to Manish Sisodia in October, the Supreme Court noted that a money trail of Rs 338 crore has been tentatively established in the case. Even though money trail has been established by Supreme Court, Arvind Kejriwal keeps on insisting that there in no corruption as he avoids investigation authorities.

Delhi Excise Policy

The liquor policy for 2021-22 was put into effect by the Delhi administration on 17th November 2021, however, it was cancelled at the end of September 2022 due to accusations of corruption. According to the agencies, the new regulation led to monopolisation and gave economic advantages to people who weren’t eligible for liquor licenses.

Interestingly, Kejriwal government scrapped the policy the moment an investigation started into the policy and its implementation.

Turkey: Man punches ‘protestor’ carrying a flag that reads ‘There is no God but Allah’, police start investigating a journalist who praised the act

A prominent journalist in Turkey is the subject of an inquiry by Turkish prosecutors after he applauded an offender earlier this week. The journalist’s comments were in support of a university student who had assaulted a demonstrator waving an Islamic flag on 1st January. The journalist has been identified as Fatih Altyali. He has a massive following of over 2.6 million on X and more than 8 lakh subscribers on his official YouTube channel.

He responded to the incident in which university student Ege Akersoy punched İsmail Aydemir, a protestor for carrying a flag bearing the Islamic “word of Tawhid” (unity) that means “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger”. Responding to the assault, he had posted a message on his social media that read “Eline sağlık” which is translated to “Well done.” The occurrence transpired during an anti-Israel rally in İstanbul.

Source: Tele1

As part of an inquiry by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, Fatih Altyali is allegedly accused of “praising a crime and a criminal.” He is being probed for reportedly “fomenting hatred and enmity among the public” in connection with remarks he made regarding the attendees of a recent anti-Israel event in Ankara in a video that was posted on 24th December.

The journalist informed the T24 news website that he was called in by prosecutors on 3rd January and is going to the prosecutor’s office on 5th January with his attorney. He removed his statement on X and clarified in a video released to his YouTube channel that he had not intended to applaud the attack and had not made any personal reference to anyone when he wrote the contentious tweet.

After working for several news organisations in the past, Fatih Altyali now runs a YouTube channel where he posts his opinions on a variety of domestic and global topics and his videos draw millions of views.

Background of the instance

According to the Kronos news website, a pro-government foundation staged an anti-Israel protest in Istanbul on 1st January during which a university student was detained for hitting a protestor displaying an Islamic flag. Tens of thousands of people protested in Istanbul against Israel’s war in Gaza and the murder of Turkish soldiers in Iraq by prohibited Kurdish militants. The pro-government Turkey Youth Foundation (TÜGVA) whose members include President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s son Bilal arranged the protest.

Turkish media sources stated that Ege Akersoy, a fourth-year engineering student at Yıldız Technical University in İstanbul punched İsmail Aydemir, one of the protestors while he was holding an Islamic flag. The former was then taken into custody by law enforcement at Karaköy Police Station. Afterwards, a court ordered his arrest and transported him to Metris Prison.

Ege Akersoy is seen in a clip taken after the event asking İsmail Aydemir why he didn’t have the Turkish flag instead while a visibly wounded İsmail Aydemir questioned the former’s Muslim faith.

Many argued that the action was out of proportion to the conduct whereas others contended that İsmail Aydemir ought to have been punished for raising a “caliphate flag” in the first place. The people charged him with “revolting against the constitutional order” for proposing the restoration of the caliphate which Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the man who founded modern Turkey had destroyed in 1924.
