Viral photographs of PM Modi in Lakshadweep cause huge jump in people searching for more information on the islands and snorkelling

Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Lakshadweep on 2 and 3 January, as part of his South India visit which also included programs in Tamil Nadu and Kerala. The PM reached Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, 2nd January, from there he flew to Agatti in Lakshadweep on the same day. He spent the night in union territory, attended several programs, before moving to Kerala for a road show on 3rd January.

Today PM Modi shared several photographs on X, showing that apart from attending public programs, he also took part in some adventurous activities in the scenic islands. He tried snorkelling, and shared photographs on the same. He tweeted, “During my stay, I also tried snorkelling – what an exhilarating experience it was!”

PM Modi also shared two underwater photographs of coral reefs and other marine life. He tweeted, “For those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep has to be on your list.”

He also shared images of enjoying some time on the beach, saying, “In addition to the scenic beauty, Lakshadweep’s tranquility is also mesmerising. It gave me an opportunity to reflect on how to work even harder for the welfare of 140 crore Indians.” PM Modi said he took early morning walks “along the pristine beaches” which proved to be “moments of pure bliss”.

After PM Modi posted those images, the number of searches for the terms Lakshadweep and snorkelling skyrocketed. The Google searches for snorkelling has jumped by over 2000%, while the searches for Lakshadweep has increased by around 350%.

This shows a massive increase of people on Lakshadweep, including the snorkelling activity. It is notable that snorkelling is the activity of swimming under water while breathing ambient water using a tube called snorkel. This allows people to observe the underwater environment by swimming just under the water surface. As a tube is use to breath ambient air, it does not require oxygen tank, which is needed in diving.

Snorkelling is a popular recreational activity at beach resort locations, and Lakshadweep has plenty of such locations which can give a boost to tourism in the islands.

During his visit to Lakshadweep, the Prime Minister inaugurated development projects worth more than Rs 1,150 crore. One major project is the inauguration of the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI-SOFC) project, which he had announced in his independence day speech in 2020. This will lead to an increase of internet speed for more than 100 times, from 1.7 Gbps to 200 Gbps, in the UT. This is the first Submarine Optic Fibre Cable connection for Lakshadweep.

PM Modi also dedicated the Low-Temperature Thermal Desalination plant at Kadmat to the nation, which will produce 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water every day.

‘No intention to humiliate’, ‘did not know woman’s caste’: Punjab and Haryana HC quashes SC/ST FIR against Times Now journalist Bhawana Gupta

On Thursday, 4th January, the Punjab and Haryana High Court quashed an FIR filed last year against Times Now Navbharat reporter Bhawana Gupta (Bhawana Kishore) for allegedly hitting a Dalit woman with a car and hurling casteist slurs against her.

A bench of Justice Anoop Chitkara observed, “It remains undisputed that the accused/petitioner had no personal knowledge of the victim’s or her family’s caste. As such, the Court cannot presume that the accused was aware of the victim’s caste or tribal identity. Given this, the primary burden was on the complainant to establish this knowledge, which they did not state. Neither the State nor the complainant mentioned that the petitioner was aware of the victim’s caste, and their conspicuous silence speaks more than the words.”

The court invoked its inherent jurisdiction under section 482 CrPC and quashed the FIR and all subsequent proceedings qua the petitioner, saying that it was a fit case where continuing criminal proceedings would amount to an abuse of the legal process.

Notably, in May 2023, Bhawana Gupta, cameraman Mrityunjay Kumar, and the driver of their car, Parmender Singh Rawat, were arrested in connection with the road accident. While the accused were charged under Indian Penal Code sections 279, 337, and 427, the TimesNow journalist was charged also under Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act sections 3 and 4. The FIR against Kumar and Rawat had already been quashed by the high court.

Gupta argued, through her lawyer, that even if the allegations were assumed to be true, she had no intention of abusing the woman with the words attributed to her in the FIR because she had never met her and was unaware of her caste. The counsel additionally contended that the FIR was politically motivated, fabricated, and would stifle the media’s voice.

The state counsel, on the other hand, argued that the investigation was in its early stages and that Gupta intended to insult the woman with casteist abuses, thus violating the provisions of the SC/ST Act.

Justice Chitkara ruled that the driver of the vehicle was responsible for the offences under IPC sections 279 (rash driving) and 337 (causing hurt by doing any act so rashly or negligently), and that section 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) was involved in the damage to a mobile phone that had fallen as a result of the accident’s impact.

“It would be a travesty of justice to arrive at a finding of a prima facie case that the petitioner, who was not driving and was a passenger, had caused impact with the vehicle with the intention or knowledge that the driver will cause an accident, the phone that the victim might be carrying would fall, which in turn would cause a loss of more than Rs.50. Thus, by such an imagination, the ingredients of mischief could not have been invoked against the petitioner,” the bench noted.

“Even if all allegations of causing damage to the phone are taken to be true, it will not constitute any offence against the petitioner, punishable under Sections 279, 337, 427 IPC,” the Court said, dismissing the FIR for an offence under Sections 279, 337, 427 IPC.

Furthermore, regarding the accusation that Bhawana Gupta hurled casteist abuses and insulted the complainant publicly for belonging to SC/ST, Justice Chitaka opined, “Offence under the Act is not established merely on the fact that the informant is a member of Scheduled Caste unless there is an intention to humiliate a member of Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe for the reason that the victim belongs to such caste.”

In the face of the foregoing, the Court ruled that continuing criminal proceedings would be an abuse of the legal process, and thus quashed the FIR and all subsequent proceedings relating to Gupta.

Back in May last year, Times Now had alleged that their reporter was falsely implicated in an SC-ST case by the Ludhiana police. The channel also said that she was not driving the vehicle and was not responsible for the accident. Bhawana was arrested while she was on her way to report the inauguration of Mohalla Clinics by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal.

The channel, hinting at an alleged witchhunt launched against them by the Aam Aadmi Party after their recent “Operation Sheesh Mahal” expose against their supremo Arvind Kejriwal, said that Bhawana was taken away in a car by a male cop before a flimsy FIR was filed against her in Ludhiana’s Section 3 Division Police Station. It was also noted that the said cop was not wearing a nameplate displaying his name while taking Bhavana.

Speaking about her ordeal last year while she was held in police custody, Bhawana had said that she was forced by the police to use the toilet with its door open. “I was not feeling well, so I ate the food [they gave]. The driver and cameraperson also ate a little. I was having a lot of water as I was feeling nervous. When I went to the washroom, 2-3 female constables accompanied me. There was no electricity or water at the police station [I was kept in],” Bhawana said.

Karnataka: After Kar Sewak’s arrest, Congress govt reopens yet another case against a Hindu activist in connection with demolition of tomb in Dattapeetha

The Congress-led state government has reopened another case against Hindu activists in Karnataka. As per reports, a case against Dattapeetha activist has been reopened a day after Karsewak Srikant Poojari’s arrest. The case against Dattapeetha activists is linked to the demolition of a tomb in Dattapeetha in 2017 in Taluk Chikkamagaluru. The case was closed when the BJP government was in power in the state.

Reports suggest that the state government has reopened cases against 14 people. Some of the activists against whom the cases were reopened are Tudukur Manju, Shivaraj, Sandesh, Sumanth, Naga, Nagendra Poojary, Mohan, Ashok, Teju, Srinath, Lokesh Mahendra, Sandeep and Ramu. They have been asked to appear in court on 8th January.

Karnataka Government reopened cases ahead of Pran Pratishtha of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya

Ahead of the date of Pran Pratishta of Ram Lalla in Ayodhya, the Karnataka government has stirred a controversy by reopening several cases against Hindu activists. One of the Kar Sewak Srikant Poojari was arrested by Karnataka Police for his alleged involvement in riots following the demolition of a disputed structure in Ayodhya.

After his arrest, BJP leaders staged protests in the state, accusing the government of vendetta politics. On the other hand, Congress workers protested, demanding the arrest of BJP leaders. Notably, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on 2nd January that a criminal remains a criminal until he is proven innocent by a court of law.

Who is Devendra Tiwari, who conspired to send threats to Yogi, Ram Mandir and himself: Fought polls on SP ticket, supported Congress, supported Tikait in farm law protests

On Wednesday (3rd January), two individuals were apprehended for issuing bomb threats targeting the Shri Ram Temple, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, and the chief of the UP Police Special Task Force (STF). It was discovered that Devendra Tiwari, the head of NGOs named Bharatiya Kisan Manch and Bharatiya Gau Seva Parishad, masterminded the plot.

After Devendra Tiwari was named in the case, several people, including the Congress party and Alt News cofounder Mohammed Zubair are accusing that he is linked with BJP. They have been sharing photographs showing Tiwari with BJP leaders like UP CM Yodi Adityanath.

Uttar Pradesh Sevadal posted such an image on Twitter showing Tiwari meeting Yogi Adityanath, to insinuate that he has links with BJP.

Samajwadi Prahari, the mouthpiece of Samajwadi Party, claimed that Tiwari is a BJP supporter and close to several BJP leaders.

‘Fact checker’ Zubair also shared the photo saying that Tiwari had shared the image of him meeting Yogi Adityanath and had assured full support to BJP in 2022 assembly elections.

Zubair also shared social media posts of Tiwari extending support to BJP, along with an acknowledgement letter by the party.

While it is a fact that Devendra Tiwari had met Yogi Adityanath and extended support to BJP, opposition parties and others missed a crucial fact. That fact is, Tiwari has hobnobbed with several different political parties in the past, including Congress and SP.

Tiwari has used the photo of him meeting the UP CM as the banner image in his Facebook profile, but the photos in the same profile shows that he does not have any special ties with BJP, and he meets leaders of almost all political parties. As he heads Bharatiya Kisan Manch, he is actively involved in farmer politics, and is seen with Rakesh Tikait in many photos. He also participated in the farmer protests.

Notably, Devendra Tiwai fought the Zila Panchayat elections in 2015 from a Samajwadi Ticket. He was a candidate from Sarojini Nagar from the party. He was seen with banners of SP featuring images of Mulayam Singh Yadav and Akhilesh Yadav.

Devendra Tiwari fought local body poll on SP ticket

In the 2017 assembly elections, he supported SP candidate Anurag Yadav from Sarojini Nagar assembly constituency.

Devendra Tiwari supported SP candidate

He was also associated with the Congress party in the same period. In 2016, he posted a photo of himself with the Congress hand symbol superimposed on it. He is seen with Sheila Dikshit in the same year in a photo he posted on Facebook. In the same year, he was also seen in a Congress rally in Varanasi, joining the campaign for Congress candidate Rajendra Mishra from Varanasi South in assembly polls.

Devendra Tiwari supported Congress candidate

Devendra Tiwari’s social media history shows that he was an opponent of BJP till 2021. Apart from participating in SP and Congress events, he regularly posted messages supporting these two parties, apart from supporting the farmer organisations protesting against the BJP government. He also actively took part in the anti-farm law protests.

However, he seems to have pivoted to have a favourable view of the BJP in 2021. He started supporting BJP candidates in local body polls in that year. Devendra Tiwari posted the photos of him meeting Yogi Adityanath and other BJP leaders in March 2022. During this time he also assured support to the BJP.

However, this does not mean that he has any special affiliation with BJP. He continues to be part of farmer movements, being the chief of Bharatiya Kisan Manch. While has only promised to BJP, he actually contested election on a SP tickets. Moreover, he campaigned for both SP and Congress candidates in the 2017 assembly polls.

As per the police, Devendra Tiwari hatched the entire plan to send threatening messages to gain political prominence. It has been alleged he had asked his employees Tahar Singh and Om Prakash Mishra to send the threat emails using fake names, so that he can demand more security from the government. A terrorist threat and govt security will improve his political stature, he had thought.

The emails had threatened bomb attacks against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, STF Chief Amitabh Yash, Devendra Nath Tiwari, and the upcoming Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

Kar sevak Shrikant Poojary arrested: Discrepancies between Hubbali-Dharwad police and Karnataka Home dept versions raise suspicion over intent of arrest

0

While the Hubbali-Dharwad Police in Karnataka has claimed that arrested kar sevak Shrikant Poojary had been absconding since 1992 when the case was filed, government documents reveal that he had been fined and even summoned several times in the past.

A report by News18 citing documents released by the Karnataka Home Department says that Poojary was summoned by the police in 2004, 2009 and 2018 prompting the question that why an arrest wasn’t made then.

According to the News18 report, Poojary was also asked to give an undertaking at the police station for good behaviour whenever there was a precautionary arrest under 107 of CrPC. Moreover, Poojary was also reporedly fined multiple times under the Karnataka Police Act.

The report alleges that the Hubbali-Dharwad Police knew about the whereabouts of Shrikant Poojary. This thereby reveals a huge inconsistency in the case of the arrest of Shrikant Poojary.

As per reports, Poojary was booked in 16 cases in the past 31 years including pertaining to riots in the aftermath of the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992.

A case was filed in 1992 at the Hubbali town policestaion for rioting and other offences under Sections 143, 147, 436, 427 of IPC. In 2006, the case was designated as long pending by a court.

According to Hubli-Dharwad City Police Commissioner Renuka K Sukumar, the action is part of a routine drive to clear long-pending cases.

An official quoted by News18 said, “The investigations into long-pending cases or LPCs began and we found that Poojary was the one we could categorise under absconding, so he was picked up and arrested.”

Sanjeev Bhadaskar, Counsel of Shrikant Poojary, while speaking to Republic TV said that Poojary has been living in the same city in Karnataka since the past 31 years.

In view of the above information, the timing of Poojary’s arrest has come into question. Since Poojary was named in the Hubbali 1992 riots case in 1992 itself and with the state government documents revealing that Poojary had given undertaking for good behaviour and had not left the city, the BJP has asked why was the arrest now made in the case in the past 30+ years?

Karnataka BJP has been protesting across the state to protest Poojary’s arrest. BJP leader CT Ravi staged a protest outside he town police station in Chikmagalur.

In a statement, Karnataka BJP president BY Vijayendra accused the Congress-led government of being anti-Hindu. He said, “Karnataka government is proving again and again that it is an anti-Hindu government. Yesterday in Hubballi, they reopened a 31-year-old case, and Hindu worker Srikant Poojari was arrested; we strongly condemn this.”

Simultaneously, BJP MLA and general secretary V Sunil Kumar was detained by police for staging a protest in Bengaluru. Kumar held a placard that read, “I am Kar Sewak; arrest me”, after which the police detained him.

The protests comes a day after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah justified the action saying that it did not stem from vendetta. Speaking to the media in Koppal, he said, “His involvement in the violence after the Babri Masjid demolition in 1992 in Hubli was found during investigations, and the arrest was not an action that stemmed from vendetta.”

Meanwhile, Poojary’s son has said that his father had cleared his name years ago. “I don’t know why they have raked this issue up now,” he was quoted by News18. Poojary continues to reside at his ancestral house and drives an auto to earn a living.

Notably, the controversial action by the Karnataka government against the kar sevak comes just days ahead of the much-awaited Ram Mandir inauguration and Pran Pratishtha ceremony on 22nd January. The action against the kar sevak by the Congress government in Karnataka is being questioned in the backdrop of this event.

Two years after they were murdered in cold blood in 1990 by the SP government, another batch of kar sevaks on 6 December 1992 demolished the Babri masjid paving the way for the development of Ram Mandir on Ram Janmabhoomi.

Dawa Daru dono me ghotala: BJP launches fresh attack on Delhi’s Kejriwal government after the exposure of fake lab test scam at Mohalla Clinics

On Thursday (4th January), Delhi BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi slammed the ruling AAP government after the LG called for a CBI probe into the fake lab tests at the Aam Aadmi Mohalla clinics in Delhi. The leader said that the AAP was already committing fraud in the liquor policy matter and now it was additionally executing fraud in medicine.

Trivedi based its allegations on the vigilance report published on 23rd December last year. The report exposed the government hospitals in Delhi using inappropriate medicines causing harm to the health of the patients. Delhi Governor V K Saxena also took cognizance of the event and ordered a probe into the matter.

The investigation, based on officials, was required when it was discovered that the doctors assigned to these seven mohalla clinics spread across the South-West, Shahdara, and North-East districts would not show up for duty and would instead record their presence on bio-metric systems using pre-recorded videos. While some doctors would reach the clinics well after others and yet record full attendance, others would skip work entirely.

A further probe of patient data on the orders of the LG exposed how thousands of lab tests were done on ghost patients. These patients were registered using fake or repeated phone numbers, and expensive lab tests were prescribed which are done by two private laboratories in Delhi. In the data taken for just 3 months for 7 mohalla clinics, over 23,000 fake patients with fake phone numbers were detected.

Sudhanshu Trivedi held a press meeting on Thursday (4th January) and termed the AAP Mohalla clinics as ‘fake’. The leader said that the vigilance report highlighted the usage of fake medicines in the government clinics in Delhi. He also said that the AAP should showcase the CCTV footage of such clinics to prove themselves innocent, and to show that there are no ghost patients at the clinic.

“Earlier, the AAP said that around 500 patients daily visited the AAP Moholla clinics. The official timing of the clinics is 9 am to 1 pm. How is it possible that the doctors at the clinic can attend to so many patients in just 4 hours daily? Now it has come to the fore that the terminological testing facility that was used by the Moholla clinics is also fake. They did scam in liquor policy case and not they are doing scam in medicines and medicals testings,” Trivedi said.

Earlier, BJP’s Manoj Tiwari and Virendra Sachdeva held a press conference on this matter. The duo alleged that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was a trader of fake medicines. At the same time, Virendra Sachdeva had said that there is enough evidence against the corruption of AAP leaders. “This party is hungry for money,” the duo had said.

This comes amid the times when Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal skipped the Enforcement Directorate’s summons for the 3rd time. ED plans to question the AAP supremo in the Delhi liquor scam, however, the Delhi CM has been evading the authorities.

Sometimes, Kejriwal used the excuse of assembly elections, sometimes of Vipassana, and now of upcoming Rajya Sabha elections and Republic Day. While making time for all these things, Arvind Kejriwal has failed to make time for ED questioning.

Interestingly, Kejriwal doesn’t seem to have time for ED, but he has enough time for the media. On Thursday, 4th January, Arvind Kejriwal issued a statement saying, “The truth is that there was no corruption. BJP wants to arrest me. My biggest asset is my honesty & they want to dent it. My lawyers have told me that summons sent to me are illegal.”

Arvind Kejriwal further said, “BJP’s aim is not to probe me, but not to let me campaign for Lok Sabha elections. They want to call me on the pretext of investigation and then arrest me.”

Notably, Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party has 1 Lok Sabha MP and he says BJP is pulling out all the stops to stop this 1 MP party from campaigning for Lok Sabha elections in 2024.

The liquor policy for 2021-22 was put into effect by the Delhi administration on 17th November 2021, however, it was cancelled at the end of September 2022 due to accusations of corruption. According to the agencies, the new regulation led to monopolization and gave economic advantages to people who weren’t eligible for liquor licenses.

Interestingly, the Kejriwal government scrapped the policy the moment an investigation started into the policy and its implementation.

Delhi: Special Cell of Delhi Police arrests most wanted terrorist Javaid Mattoo of terrorist outfit Hizbul Mujahideen

0

On Thursday (4th January), the special cell of Delhi police arrested a most wanted terrorist of Hizbul Mujahideen from Delhi. The arrested terrorist Javaid Mattoo had a prize of Rs 5 lakhs on his head. Mattoo hails from Jammu and Kashmir. He was absconding after executing multiple terrorist activities and several murders in Kashmir. His arrest comes weeks before the Republic Day celebrations in the national capital.

It is notable that on 14th August 2023, terrorist Javaid Mattoo’s brother Rayees Mattoo was seen hoisting the national flag on his home at Sopore in Jammu and Kashmir ahead of Independence Day. Rayees Mattoo claimed that he did this from his heart, without any pressure from anyone. In a media interaction, he also appealed to his brother to leave the path of terrorism and come back to the mainstream.

Now, the Delhi police have arrested Javaid Mattoo in Delhi before the Republic Day celebrations. January is full of several high profile events in India. On 22nd January, there is a grand program of consecration ceremony in the Ram temple in Ayodhya. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and many other VIPs are also expected to attend the event. Apart from this, a big annual program will also be organised on Republic Day (26th January) in Delhi where French President Emmanuel Macron will be the chief guest.

However, before such grand events, the arrest of a terrorist of the banned organisation Hizbul Mujahideen in the capital Delhi has raised the concerns of the security agencies. Currently, police are engaged in interrogating this terrorist of Hizbul Mujahideen.

Eastern Horizon: Israel and India’s unrealized strategic alliance

Never before Oct 8. had Israel been flooded with so many Indian reporters. Of the few thousand foreign journalists who rushed to Israel to cover the war, over a hundred arrived from India, including many of the most famous faces of Indian media.

I received multiple offers for reporting positions, and I chose Republic TV, India’s most viewed and most right-wing TV network. When I travelled to the residence of President Yitzhak Herzog to request an interview with our anchor in Delhi, they informed me that they were not intentionally ignoring my channel’s previous requests, but were simply swamped by inquiries from no fewer than 37 Indian outlets, each claiming it was the biggest in India.

Even more unusual than the sheer magnitude of Indian-focused coverage is the fact that Indian media was staunchly supportive of Israel. Excepting Communist-oriented media (such as the prestigious magazine ‘Frontline’) and most Muslim-Indian reporters, Indian media was so enthusiastic in their support for Israel that Qatari-owned outlets began calling them out for “Zionism” and “Islamophobia”.

Israelis may take for granted the strength of Israel-India relations and the warm welcome they receive in India, but merely a few decades ago our relationship was completely different.

From the Indian Independence Movement to Diplomatic Relations with Israel

Full diplomatic relations between India and Israel were only established in 1992 following the Madrid Conference, on the heels of over forty years of hostility. Since the inception of the Indian Independence movement, its leaders – from both the Indian National Congress and the All-India Muslim League – were hostile towards Zionism (though not Jews) for a variety of reasons (For a full overview of the stances of the founders of India on Zionism see: Shimon Lev (Hebrew) שמעון לב, נהירין לנו שבילין דהודו  (גמא, 2018)).

Muslim leaders of the Indian independence movement such as Muhammad Ali Jinnah, who later demanded Pakistan as a state for Muslims, found themselves in the paradoxical stance of demanding the partition of India but not of Palestine. Mahatma Gandhi did not understand why Jews were coming to Arab Palestine in the first place. Both India and Pakistan voted “No” to the establishment of Israel.

Jawaharlal Nehru, who followed Gandhi as India’s first Prime Minister, was a product of Cambridge education and a Socialist by conviction. He harboured idealistic, perhaps even unrealistic, views on foreign policy that shaped India’s direction from 1947 until the 1990s. Nehru’s vision included leading non-aligned nations in the post-colonial and Third World landscape, fostering a sense of fraternity with Asian countries like China and Russia, and harbouring a strong aversion to American dominance and capitalist ideals. He also shared a close bond with Gamal Abdel Nasser, the secular Socialist leader and President of Egypt.

The only exception was V.D. Savarkar, godfather of Hindu Nationalism, the political creed of PM Modi and the BJP party. Savakar wrote an open letter congratulating Israel upon its founding.

It is the backdrop of the long-standing Nehruvian legacy that makes the current Israel-India relations so surprising.

Indian Economy and Political Power

Beyond mere friendship however, India is also accruing a newfound importance, to Israel and globally.  From a country famous for masses living in abject poverty and neglect, hostile to USA and its allies, and with leaders famous for populism and corruption, India is finally being regarded as the rising global power it had always envisioned itself.

The initial economic liberalization that saved India from bankruptcy in 1992 has now led India to represent – as of 2022 – 7.2% of the global economy, with the 5th largest nominal GDP.

Pro-American sentiment is on the rise, even as Indian Minister of External Affairs, S. Jaishankar, plots a course in foreign affairs that is asserting Indian independence from Western dictates. The greatest trophy for this independent Indian foreign policy would be a permanent seat on the UN Security Council. Although it would force India to take stances rather than remain silently “non-aligned,” it would further the narrative of India as master of its own destiny.

The Indian government is at ideological loggerheads with both Western progressives regarding nationalism and Islam, and with American Evangelicals over the proselytization of Hindus. But beyond the snarky moralizing exemplified in Western media, Indian officials enjoy ever-growing collaboration with the highest levels of Western governments.

Aside from the goal of containing China, the primary reason for this red-carpet-treatment is the influence of India’s most valuable export: Indian brainpower. India exports enormous numbers of its best, brightest, and most ambitious citizens, who have become leaders in the fields of STEM and management, including the current CEOs of illustrious tech brands such as Google, Microsoft, Adobe, and Palo Alto Networks. Indians and Israelis are the two most dominant minorities in Silicon Valley, and usually cultivate excellent work relationships, a sentiment echoed by former PM Naftali Bennet when speaking about his years as a high-tech CEO in the U.S.

Decades of elite immigration have led the 5-million-strong Indian-American community to supersede the Jews as the richest and most educated minority in the U.S. Yet a newer phenomenon is the Indian diaspora’s rising political power. Two Indian-originating Americans, Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, are now contending for the Republican presidential nomination. Democratic Vice President, Kamala Harris, is half-Indian. There are five Indian Americans in Congress, ranging from radical ‘Squad’ member, Pramila Jayapal, to Shri Tenadar, who has founded a ‘Hindu Caucus.’ Rishi Sunak, PM of the UK, is a proud Hindu, as is former Home Secretary, Priti Patel, both Conservatives. Leo Vardakar is the PM of Ireland. Indians also lead countries in the Indies and South America such as Trinidad and Tobago, and Suriname.

In the U.S., Indian-American advocacy organizations, such as the Hindu American Foundation (HAF), are collaborating with Jewish advocacy organizations like AJC and the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and are even candidly adopting their methods; For example, modeling the definition of “Hinduphobia” along the contours of the IHRA definition for antisemitism. As a conspicuous minority of non-white, non-Christian overachievers, Hindus have become targets of hate-crimes, and many Hindus, such as HAF leadership, are staunchly pro-Israel, as they are keenly aware that most of the anti-Hindu and and-Israel hatred originates from the same sources, with near-identical motivations.

Israel-India Conservative Alliance

We now begin to understand the common interests of India and Israel. Some such interests are shared by Jewish and Hindu diasporas, and some are unique to their respective motherlands.

Both share the existential threat of the global Red-Green Alliance of Progressives and Islamists. Many Hindus in the U.S. and UK were horrified by the post-Oct. 7 pro-Hamas rallies and the dramatic spike seen in antisemitic attacks. Given a chance, these same mobs will come for the Hindus, as has already been the case in the UK.

This opens up the possibility of a global conservative counter-alliance, although some obvious difficulties would have to be overcome: Israeli conservatives publish primarily in Hebrew and are largely unknown in the Anglosphere. And like most Westerners, they are unfamiliar with modern India and its discourse.

Hindu conservatives (“Nationalists” is their preferred term) don’t get along with Evangelicals, and for all their deep admiration of Israel, they are generally unaware of the basics of Jewish and Israeli history and heritage. If a long-standing bridge is to be built, deeper foundations must promptly be laid.

However, the recent wartime TV appearances of conservatives such as Douglas Murray are leading to a growing awareness and appreciation of Western conservatives, with whom Indians have had only a love-hate relationship since colonial times. And never before have so many Israeli experts and dignitaries appeared en masse on Indian screens.

Israel, India, and Islam

One major building block for further unity is the fact that Israel and India both share the common threat of Islamic terrorism, albeit from different terrorists and countries. India is already the Israeli defense industries’ largest client, and it will take years more for India to fully modernize its defense forces. According to foreign sources, it was an emergency shipment of Israeli precise armaments that allowed India to triumph over Pakistan in the Kargil War of 1999. This was the watershed moment in India-Israel relations, long before the rise of PM Modi, in 2014.

The primary Islamic threat to India is from Pakistan, in which wild incitement against India is inculcated in public schools, madrassas, mosques, and media. The Pakistani military recruits terrorists to organizations such as Lashkar-e Taiba (LeT) for its cross-border attacks on Indian Kashmir, hidden behind a thin veil of plausible deniability. LeT was also responsible for the 26/11/2008 attacks on Mumbai, which killed 166 people, including four Israelis and two other Jews. Recently, Israel finalized its designation of LeT as a terrorist organization, and is lobbying for Hamas to be recognized as such by India.

Indian Muslims number an estimated 200 million, roughly 15% of the 1.4 billion Indians. The majority are not radical, except for known enclaves in places such as Kerala, West Bengal, Hyderabad, and Kashmir.

However, the Oct. 28 televised speech of Hamas leader, Khaled Mashaal, to a Jamaat-I Islami (India’s Muslim Brotherhood) rally was an alarming development. The rally was part of a campaign titled “Uproot Hindutva and Apartheid Zionism.” Hindutva, the ideology of Hindu Nationalists – here just a code word for Hindus – was equated with Zionism by Muslim Brotherhood leaders in a candid attempt to export Hamas ideology and methods to India. BJP leadership responded with outrage, but Kerala is governed by the Communist Party of India (CPI), who align with Islamists, and it is unclear just how the central government will deal with these clear threats.

Yet on a deeper level, here too, critical infrastructure is lacking: Although India has defense research and Pakistan experts, shockingly, for a country that will soon have the largest Muslim population in the world, it has almost no experts on Islam or the Middle East. This is due to both the Marxist-Communist orientation of Indian humanities faculties that dictated the downplaying of all religions, and to the weakness in foreign language instruction. Here, Israeli scholars can play a role and collaborate with various institutions, especially with the young up-and-coming right-wing Indian intelligentsia, who are mainly STEM graduates who transitioned to humanities, and who have yet to fully find their intellectual voice.

Israel has few experts of South Asian Islam, no leading experts on South Asian Islamic terrorism, and almost no Urdu speakers. The Israeli intelligence community invests little effort in this part of the world, which is traditionally seen as lacking influence on Israel. I believe this assumption is incorrect.

Israel, India, and the Global Order

The most tangible, immediate dividends in Israel-India relations have been aptly demonstrated by recent geopolitical realignments.

The history of the subcontinent is inextricably intertwined with that of the nearby Arabian Peninsula, even more so since the rise of Arab Petro-economies. In the UAE, South Asians (2.8 million Indians, 1.29 million Pakistanis, and 0.75 million Bangladeshis) number around half of the population, filling every position, from bellboys to billionaire CEOs. The UAE is India’s 3rd largest trading partner. Saudi Arabia (KSA) is itself home to 2.12 million Bangladeshis, 1.88 million Indians, and 1.81 million Pakistanis.

Cold War politics placed India in the non-aligned, de facto pro-Soviet camp. Pakistan aligned with the USA, as did the KSA and UAE, who both needed American military protection, and, as Salafi fundamentalists, espoused a visceral hatred of the “Godless Communists.”

Following the Cold War’s thaw, India moved ever closer to the West and its competitive economies, while Pakistan never recovered from the Islamic extremism, violence, and economic damage inflicted by Gen. Zia Ul-Haq’s Islamic reforms of 1978, and subsequent support for terrorism as a state tool. Gulf countries therefore increasingly courted India, while sending only nominal humanitarian aid to Pakistan.  Subsequently, India-Israel relations hit a glass ceiling: India would not part ways with the rich Gulf states and had to maintain a delicate balancing act.

This changed dramatically with the Abraham Accords. Suddenly, India did not have to choose sides. On the contrary: if the UAE was warming up to Israel – and it was obvious the KSA had given a green light – India could join the party.

This logic engendered the mini-lateral alliance of I2U2 (Israel, India, UAE, USA). Israel would bring tech and defense capabilities, India would supply skilled and menial labor, UAE would bring finance, and the USA would defend the alliance diplomatically and with its fleets. While the alliance remained amorphic, business boomed, as did defense and intelligence ties.

Since the Arab spring of 2011, the UAE had become hostile to radical Islam, wiping out the local branch of the Muslim Brotherhood (Al Islah) by 2014. As India legally integrated Kashmir in 2019, the UAE’s response to Pakistani outcries was granting the Medal of the Order of Prince Zaid to PM Modi. Kashmir apparently did not constitute an Islamic cause.

By the time the Abraham Accords were signed in 2020, the UAE had developed a vision of inter-religious tolerance, which resonates deeply with India. The rise of Mohammad Bin Salman (MBS) and his vision for the KSA hold a similar promise, though yet to be fully implemented. These developments led to various interfaith initiatives. Currently, both countries align with Israel and India in their battle against radical Islam.

G-20, IMEC, and Oct. 7

The showcase initiative announced at the Delhi G-20 Summit in September was the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC). IMEC is a proposed route for Indian goods to Europe that would cut transit times by 60%. Goods would transit from India’s northwestern ports to the Jebel Ali port in the UAE, and from there to the Indian-owned port of Haifa via freight trains running through the UAE, KSA, Jordan and Israel, and finally from the Haifa port to Greece. New energy pipelines and communications lines would be laid as well.

This was India’s first successful counter to Chinese encirclement, and posed a strong blow to Pakistan, further alienating it from the KSA and the UAE and cementing its status as a Chinese client.

Although G-20 delegates were careful not to mention it, it was clear that the corridor proposal carried with it implications of KSA normalizing relations with Israel. Messages of normalization were delivered in Western media months before the summit.

This was the working logic of the Abraham Accords in Israeli foreign policy: More Muslim nations were destined to join in, and KSA was to be the biggest catch. KSA is the leader of the Sunni world, and other Sunni states couldn’t be more Catholic than the pope and would immediately follow suit. Shortly before the Oct 7. attacks, Foreign Minister Eli Cohen spoke of 6 other Muslim states that would normalize relations after KSA. The Palestinian veto on the Islamic world’s normalization with Israel seemed over at last.

Then came the Oct. 7 attacks. Muslim masses rallied emotionally behind Gaza, against Israel. The current Muslim popular sentiment is extremely anti-Israel, and some commentators have pronounced IMEC dead on arrival.

While IMEC and Israel-KSA normalization may have been delayed, I firmly believe they will materialize. Too many powerful parties are too deeply invested for it to fail.

In summary, IMEC represents staggering economic interests for all the involved parties, as well as the continuation of geopolitical realignments that began years ago – India realigning with the West and Israel, joined by a KSA and UAE inimical to radical Islam.

In this arena, China (which de-facto supports Hamas) is an anti-Western force that must be countered, as is the Progressive wing of President Biden’s Democratic Party, which has rallied so shockingly for Hamas. If Israel-KSA normalization has been postponed, it may well happen under a Republican president.

Epilogue

I agree with our ambassador in Delhi, Naor Gilon, who stated that Indian love for Israel is “something I cannot fully explain.” While the straightforward explanation posits the fascination of Hindu Nationalists with Israel as a paradigm of a high-functioning Religious-Nationalist state (contrary to secularist accusations of them creating “a Hindu Pakistan”), there does seem to be a deeper metaphysical connection, akin to our relationship with Evangelicals who view Jews as objects of veneration.

As Evangelical support is suffering a dramatic decline amongst young Americans, one could only hope that Indian Nationalists fill the void, maybe even in the UN Security Council. Although lacking the Biblical backdrop, and any in-depth knowledge of Israel, this newfound and unrealized strategic partnership must be fostered carefully. Israel must invest swift efforts to build a steady, direct, and mutual flow of information and expertise with India, unhindered by third parties such as the New York Times or the Guardian, who have become a steady source of hostile disinformation about both Israel and India. It is my hope that the recent peak of Indian interest in Israel may be leveraged to great effect in future times of peace.

Over 23,000 ghost patients with fake mobile numbers in just 7 clinics in 3 months: Read details of the massive fake lab test scam in Delhi’s Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinics

Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena has asked the CBI to probe the allegations of fake lab tests done at Mohalla Clinics in Delhi run by the Aam Aadmi Party government. This is the second scam to hit the Kejriwal govt’s health department after the supply of sub-standard medicines to government hospitals.

Notably, the Delhi govt has outsourced the lab test services to two laboratories, Agilus Diagnostics and Metropolis Health Care. As per the findings by the LG’s office, private laboratories were paid hundreds of crores for thousands of tests that were not done at the Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinics (AAMC). The tests were recorded in the name of ghost patients registered using fake phone numbers.

The fake lab test scam at the Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinics was unearthed during a random monitoring on the orders of the Lieutenant Governor. The order for the monitoring was issued by LG V K Saxena while clearing a file pertaining to the extension of lab testing services to private parties for patients visiting Mohalla Clinics and Delhi Govt Hospitals in December 2022.

As no impact assessment study/review report of the outsourced facilities was undertaken as recommended by the previous LG, V K Saxena ordered a random sample study of lab tests done by the private labs in the Mohalla Clinics.

The scam was first detected in August 2023, when it was found that some doctors and staff at 7 Mohalla Clinics in South-West, Shahdara and North-East districts were resorting to unethical practices to mark the attendance of patients.

They were entering patient data into the system by marking the attendance of the Medical Officer In-Charges using pre-recorded videos on 3 tablet modules, in the absence of the said officers, which is a violation of the rules. Moreover, unauthorised staff were also consulting patients and prescribing medicines in the absence of the doctors. As a result, the guilty staff members were de-empanelled and FIRs were lodged against them.

Along with this, the LG ordered a study of lab tests done in three months. For this study, sample lab testing data for 3 months, from July to September 2023, were collected from the two labs, and analysed. During the study of the sample data, it was found that a large number of fake and non-existent phone numbers were used for the registration of patients, and lab tests were supposedly done on them. Apart from fake numbers, there were duplicate phone numbers too.

This shows that tests were recorded on ghost patients and payments were made by the government for such tests.

Numbers in the fake lab test scam

Several shocking details have emerged in the study of sample data retrieved from the Lab Management Information System of Agilus Diagnostics and Metropolis Health Care, which indicate that it could be a very large-scale scam worth 100s of crores. The study showed that the de-empanelled doctors and staff were not only recording the entry of fake patients, they had also recommended a large number of lab tests for them. Moreover, the tests were prescribed in the absence of the treating doctor, another violation.

The number of fake patients found in just 7 labs in 3 months is huge. In as many as 11,657 records of patients, the mobile number had only 0s. The records of 8,251 patients do not have any mobile number recorded. In the records of 3,092 patients, the mobile number entered is 9999999999. For 400 patients, the mobile numbers start with 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, the numbers that don’t exist currently in India. Moreover, in 999 records, the same mobile numbers were repeated 15 times or more. The number 9810467129 is recorded against 185 patients, while 165 patients have the number 9855544543. This shows that in the preliminary probe by LG office, over 23,000 fake patients have been detected.

The data were taken from 7 Mohalla Clinics, which are were Jagjeet Nagar Mohalla Clinic, Bihari Colony Mohalla Clinic, Jaffar Kalan Mohalla Clinic, Dhansa Mohalla Clinic, Ujwa Mohalla Clinic, Shikarpur Mohalla Clinic, and Gopal Nagar Mohalla Clinic.

A total of 17,725 lab tests were done in these 7 clinics in the period February 2023 to September 2023. Among this, Agilus Lab did 15,463 tests for 5 Mohalla clinics, while Metropolis did 2,262 tests for 2 clinics.

A general study of all tests by the two labs was also done. As per this, a total of 6,06,837 lab tests were done by the two labs, which includes 5,21,221 by Agilus and 85,616 by Metropolis.

Arvind Kejriwal govt didn’t take action after the scam was detected

As this clearly shows that fake lab tests are being done at Mohalla Clinics, the LG had recommended a System of online registration of patients as well as Aadhar-based / biometric tracking of patients be set up within three months. The LG had also said that a fresh proposal should be evaluated after a period of six months to ascertain its efficacy, quality and genuineness and whether it is proving to be detrimental to the existing Government diagnostic mechanism.

However, despite these recommendations, no action was taken by the Delhi govt. As a result, the LG recommended proceedings against Project Director, OLS (Outsourced Lab Services) and others in the OLS branch for non-compliance of the directions. Additionally, a detailed Vigilance Enquiry was recommended to bring out the quantum of loss to the exchequer and the collusion of Doctors/Support Staff etc with the private agencies.

The vigilance report also said that despite strongly advised by the previous LG, no impact assessment study / review report of the outsourced facilities was undertaken. After the irregularities were exposed, state AAMC cell had issued directions to file FIR against the doctors of 7 Mohalla Clinics, but it was not done, and only generally diary entries were made by police. Despite this, CDMO (NED) Dr. Sandeep Gautam made false statements that FIR have been registered.

The vigilance further stated that CBI is already looking into various anomalies in setting up of Mohalla Clinics, and now the functioning of the clinics has also come under the scanner, as actual data is being manipulated/distorted to serve vested interests at the cost of exchequer. This along with the recent discovery of supply of sub-standard drugs in govt hospitals point towards the fact that ‘Health’ sector is besieged with various omissions and commissions at all fronts at the cost of public who are badly dependent on these essential services.

Moreover, while advertisements were issued to rent locations to set up the Mohalla Clinics, over 50% of the premises were taken on rent on “pick and choose basis”, and not on the basis of the advertisement, as per the vigilance report. It further states that Diagnostic lab services were approved without the approval and concurrence of Finance Department.

The remuneration of the Doctors and staff is based upon the footfall of the patient, but no audit has been done and there is no proper accounting system. “The number of patient visiting the premises/clinic is not captured in a transparent manner,” the report stated.

Based on these findings, the Vigilance Department recommended to refer the matter to CBI. Based on this, the Lt. Governor asked the CBI to take over the probe into fake lab tests done at Aam Aadmi Mohalla Clinics in Delhi.

LG Saxena slams Kejriwal, reveals how the CM tried to play politics

LG Saxena also slammed CM Kejriwal over the issue, saying that while he makes tall claims, he allowed such a big scam to continue. The LG said, “It is deeply upsetting that such fraud is allowed to be perpetrated on the general public which speaks volumes of the irresponsible and lackadaisical approach of successive Hon ‘ble Health Ministers as indeed Hon ‘ble Chief Minister, towards public health. While tall claims are frequently made in various forums by the GNCTD regarding providing world class health infrastructure in Delhi, the recent finding regarding spurious drugs and now fake lab tests, bring to the fore dark realities that belie any claims on the contrary.”

Apart from unearthing this massive scam, the LG also exposed the pathetic state of healthcare under the Arvind Kejriwal govt. While responding to Delhi Health Department’s proposal to extend contract with private labs for tests, the LG noted that it shows that the government labs are so poor in infrastructure that even basic pathological and diagnostic tests.

The LG had said, “While such a decision on the part of the Governments in remote places, that lack facilities in term of physical infrastructure and trained medical professionals in the Government sector, would have made sense, it obviously does not meet the requirements of a rational decision in the Capital of the country, owing to the fact that Government Hospitals I facilities in Delhi run by GNCI’D, as often claimed by the Government itself, are replete with ample physical infrastructure in terms of building, space, machinery and equipment as indeed medical professionals of highest caliber.”

LG Saxena also noted that his predecessor Anil Baijal had also stressed upon the need to strengthen the diagnostic infrastructure in the Government set-up, emphasizing that the public healthcare system cannot be left entirely in the hands of private players. “However, instead of making efforts to strengthen the government system as suggested, the Government has come up with a new proposal, which will further damage the public health system, by way of underutilization, disuse and neglect,” the LG noted. V K Saxena added that setting up a system of Aadhar-based I biometric tracking of patients is need of the hour to prevent any malpractices leading to financial impropriety.

The LG further noted that while the number of Mohalla Clinics in Delhi increased from 450 to 519 in 2022, the number of OPD patients in the clinics decreased from 3416 per month per clinic in 2021 to just 1824. But despite such drop in number of patients, number of diagnostic tests reported to have been conducted by the outsources labs disproportionately from 6,30,978 tests per month in 2021 to 9,30,000 tests per month in 2022.

LG Saxena also exposed how the Kejriwal govt tried to play politics over the issue to accuse him of not clearing files. Saxena said that the Delhi Cabinet had decided to extend the contract of the labs in July 2022, but the file was sent to the LG’s office in December, less than 3 weeks before the expiry of the existing contracts. And within 10 days of sending the file, CM Arvind Kejriwal wrote to him over the matter and shared the same in public domain. The LG said that it was an obvious attempt to unconstitutionally force a decision.

Karnataka: BJP holds protest against Kar Sewak’s arrest by Congress govt, MLA Sunil Kumar detained for holding placard saying ‘I am a Kar Sewak’

On 4th December, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader CT Ravi staged a protest outside the town police station against the arrest of Kar Sewak Srikant Poojari for his alleged involvement in riots after the demolition of a disputed structure in Ayodhya in 1992. Notably, BJP leaders are holding protests against the Congress-led Karnataka government across the state.

Kumar was protesting against the arrest of Kar Sewak Srikant Poojari in a 31-year-old case by Hubballi Police.

Reportedly, he was holding the placard which read, “I am Kar Sevak, who participated in the Ayodhya Ram Mandir movement on 6th December 1992, arrest me.” The police detained him for staging a protest “without permission”.

Congress workers demanded arrest of BJP leaders

On the other hand, Congress workers also staged protests against BJP leaders at Congress Bhawan. They claimed that the BJP was spreading fake information against the state government on the arrest of Poojari in Hubballi for alleged involvement in the riots after the demolition of the disputed structure. They further claimed BJP was trying to save Poojari who has multiple cases against him.

Earlier, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah BJP’s allegations of hate politics in connection to Poojari’s arrest. When asked about the matter, he said, “What should be done to the wrongdoers? Should we just leave them?” He added, “We have told the police to dispose of old cases. No innocents have been arrested. We will proceed according to the court’s direction.”

Deputy Chief Minister of Karnataka, DK Shivakumar, claimed that the arrest was to maintain law and order in the state. He added that the state government was not restoring to “vendetta politics”. He said, “We are not doing vendetta politics, but we are carrying out the task of maintaining law and order. We are a peace-loving state; there is no place for anti-social activities.”

Shivakumar accused the BJP of trying to politicise the matter. He added that the state’s Home Minister has already “clarified” that the government was only trying to clear the pending cases.

The case against Srikant Poojari and cases against Kar Sewaks

the Karnataka police department has opened cases for investigation against Ram Mandir activists who were accused of property destruction and other offenses during the peak of the movement for Ram Mandir over thirty years ago.

According to an IANS report, the police department has assembled a special team and compiled a list of ‘suspects’ in instances related to the 1992 Ram Mandir movement, which led to acts of violence by Islamists and ensuing intercommunal conflicts.

Further, regarding a claimed incident of torching a minority-owned store in Hubballi on December 5, 1992, Srikanth Poojari has been taken into custody by the Hubballi police. Poojari is the third defendant in the case, and eight more defendants are being sought after by the police. Poojari was put under court supervision.

In a similar vein, Hubballi police have also created a list of 300 ‘suspects’ they claim are connected to communal conflicts that occurred between 1992 and 1996, according to the IANS report. The ‘accused’ are now in their early and late 70s, according to police sources, and many of them have left the city.
