Indian Army wants to buy 400 Made In India howitzers, moves 6500 crore proposal to Defence Ministry

0

In a mega push to promote indigenously designed and developed weapon systems, the Indian Army has moved a proposal to the Defence Ministry to buy 400 howitzers from Indian firms.

Indian Army’s Regiment of Artillery is looking to use the expertise of Indian Industry to produce 155 mm/52 calibre Towed Gun System, which will be lighter, versatile and cater for future technological advancements.

“A proposal for buying 400 155mm 52 caliber towed gun systems (TGS) along with towing vehicles from Indian firms under the Buy Indian-IDDM category has been moved to the Defence Ministry. The government is expected to take soon a decision on the TGS at a high-level meeting,” senior military officials told ANI.

The Indian Army has already issued a tender for buying 307 Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems (ATAGS) along with one for finding a mounted gun system for its requirements along borders with China and Pakistan.

The Indian Designed, Developed, and Manufactured howitzer would mean it would be totally Indian in all ways.

The Army wants the guns to be lighter in weight and easier to deploy in high-altitude areas like the older Bofors guns.
The procurement process is part of the Army plan for Mediumisation with indigenous guns and is likely to be completed by the year 2042.

In the last decade, four contracts have been concluded to procure 155 mm howitzers. These Gun Systems have already been inducted and more number of Regiments are being equipped with these guns.

These gun systems include Dhanush, Sharang, Ultra Light Howitzer (ULH) and K-9 Vajra self-propelled guns.

Dhanush Guns are an electronic upgrade of Bofors Guns, while the Sharang Guns have been up-gunned from 130mm to 155mm calibre.

Seven Regiments have already been equipped with ULHs while five have been equipped with self-propelled guns.

Justin Trudeau denies ‘credible rumours’ of his plane being full of cocaine during his India trip for G20 Summit

Two days after an ex-Indian diplomat named Deepak Vohra accused Justin Trudeau of being under the influence of cocaine during the G20 Summit in New Delhi, the office of the Canadian Prime Minister denied the ‘credible rumours’ on Wednesday (September 27).

“This (is) absolutely false and a troubling example of how disinformation can make its way into media reporting,” it said in a statement. The development came two days after Deepak Vohra said that the plane of the Canadian Prime Minister was full of cocaine.

While speaking to Zee News, the former Indian ambassador to Sudan emphasised, “When Justin Trudeau came to India for the G20 this month, his plane was full of cocaine. He did not come out of his room for two days.”

Deepak Vohra informed that when the Canadian PM visited Delhi, there was a ‘credible rumour’ that Indian sniffer dogs discovered cocaine on his plane.

“My wife saw him at the Delhi airport and said that Trudeau looked depressed and stressed. We don’t know the reason. I don’t know the reality, but social media and some ‘credible rumours’ suggest that his plane was full of cocaine,” he was heard saying.

The ex-Indian diplomat added, “He also missed the President’s dinner as some people say that he was not in his senses due to the drug consumption. So, seeing this nothing can be said about what goes on in his mind.” Interestingly, the office of Canadian Prime Minister did not respond to the allegations of Trudeau not stepping out of his hotel room for two days.

The Background of the Controversy

Hardeep Singh Nijjar, the head of Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara Sahib and a wanted Khalistani terrorist in India, was shot dead in Surrey by two unidentified assailants on June 18, 2023. He was a wanted terrorist by the Indian Government. The 46-year-old hailed from the village Bhar Singhpura of Jalandhar.

On September 19, the Canadian government expelled one Indian diplomat after PM Justin Trudeau blamed India for the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

The development came after Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly informed in a presser that the allegations of India’s involvement are being investigated. She termed the killing an attack on Canada’s sovereignty and informed that as a consequence, Canada has expelled one top Indian diplomat.

In a swift response, the Ministry of External Affairs stated that any allegation of India’s involvement in Nijjar’s killing is ‘absurd and motivated’. It has also expelled a senior Canadian diplomat in response to Canada’s hostile behaviour towards India, and open support to anti-India terrorists.

MEA spokesperson Arindam Bagchi shared on X, “The High Commissioner of Canada was summoned today and informed about India’s decision to expel a senior Canadian diplomat based in India. The Concerned diplomat has been asked to leave India in the next five days.”

Thereafter, Canada issued travel warnings to Indian citizens in the country, stopped the issuance of new visas and even directed the country to downsize its diplomatic presence in India.

It must be mentioned that the Canadian government has so far not provided any specific proof, which could remotely point fingers at India’s role in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar.

In fact, British Columbia Premier David Eby has gone on record to say that briefings provided to him by CSIS (Canadian Intelligence Agency) about the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar were ‘open source’ and based on material available on the internet.

In fact, Justin Trudeau is now facing the heat from Canadian media, which has been insisting the government to share evidence in the public domain.

Manipur: Over 500 protesters try to storm into CM N Biren Singh’s residence in Imphal, dispersed by security forces

0

A larger number of protesters tried to storm into the residence of Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh today (28 September) evening. As per reports, a mob of over 500 youths, protesting against police action on earlier protests against the kidnapping and murder of Meitei youths Phijam Hemanjit and Luwangthoi Linthoingambi Hijam, tried to forcefully enter the private residence of the CM in Heingang, Imphal East.

Security forces deployed at the CM’s residence along with the RAF dispersed the mob and prevented them from storming into the house. Reportedly the youths also attacked the police using slingshots during the confrontation.

Police fired tear gas shells and smoke bombs, and fired in the air, to control the mob. Some of the protestors were injured in confrontation with police, who have been shifted to hospitals in ambulances. A Northeast live reporter said that over 10 youths have been injured, and the number can go up as the situation is still developing. Additional security forces now have been deployed at the CM’s residence.

The students had been camping near the CM’s residence since the afternoon, and the situation turned volatile in the evening when they tried to enter the residence. Police sources have said that the situation is now under control, and the mob was successfully dispersed.

“There was an attempt to attack the chief minister’s ancestral house at Heingang locality in Imphal. Security forces stopped the mob around 100 metres away from the house,” a police officer said.

According to reports, the protesters also attacked the residence of MLA Soraisam Kebi Devi in Imphal West district.

The protests came after over 200 people, mostly students, were injured in clashes with the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Manipur police during the past 48 hours. Defying curfew, the students have been protesting against the kidnapping and presumed murder of two Meitei youths, 20-year-old Phijam Hemanjit and 17-year-old Luwangthoi Linthoingambi Hijam. They had been missing since July, and photos surfaced on 26 September indicating that they had been killed by Kuki militants.

The students are also protesting against the internet ban which has been reimposed in Manipur, compensation for the victims injured in the protests, and the removal of the RAF from the state.

Security police allegedly used strong measures to contain the protests and around 200 students were injured as a result.

Addressing the media on Wednesday evening, Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated that the government had expected the large turnout of protestors after the photographs of the two students had gone viral. He also said that security forces were instructed to practice maximum restraint while controlling the mob while adding that action will be initiated if security personnel are found using excessive force against the public, especially students.

The situation in Manipur remains tense, and security forces have been deployed in large numbers across the state.

Later in the night, the Manipur police dismissed some reports and rumors that had claimed that the CM’s personal property was mobbed. They added that adequate security was already provided to the place.

BJP worker’s mother beaten to death; accused TMC leader Sameer Mallik arrested: Political killings continue unabated in Mamata’s West Bengal

On Wednesday, September 27, the mother of a BJP worker was allegedly beaten to death by Trinamool Congress (TMC) supporters in the Bangaon area in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district. The deceased was identified as Kanan Roy (62), the mother of a local BJP worker named Jayant Roy.

The police arrested TMC local leader Sameer Mallik after the deceased family accused him of killing her.

According to reports, the incident happened in the Manikheda village in Thakurnagar, Bangaondeceased was protesting against local youths, including TMC supporters led by Sameer Mallik, creating a ruckus in an inebriated state near her house, when she was attacked by Sameer Mallik.

Locals alleged that Sameer Mallik often behaves badly with Kanan Devi’s family. On the day of the incident, he was abusing and shouting at Kanan Devi and her family members. When Jayant Roy, the deceased woman’s son and BJP worker, protested, Sameer and his goons attacked him and started beating him up badly.

Seeing this, his elderly parents came forward to save their son. Sameer, at this point, started beating up Jayant’s parents too. Sameer hit Jayant’s mother, Kanan Devi on her head with a bamboo stick. It is alleged that Sameer Mallik’s goons also attacked the BJP worker’s wife when she went to save her mother-in-law. Kanan Devi immediately fell to the ground. The locals rushed her to Chandpara Rural Hospital. From there he was shifted to Barasat State General Hospital, but by the time she reached there, the doctor declared her dead.

After the incident, the angry villagers surrounded the house of another TMC leader Nirupam Roy accusing him of being an accomplice in the crime. Demanding his arrest, the locals said that he was trying to “influence the area as a youth Trinamool leader.” They further alleged that Sameer Mallik acted on Nirupam Roy’s orders.

The deceased’s family, meanwhile, asserted that the attack was motivated by political animosity. They said that TMC goons led by Sameer Mallik attacked Jayant Roy’s family because they were ardent supporters of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP).

“We supported the BJP and due to political enmity, Samir Mallik killed Kanan Roy. He got orders from TMC’s Bangaon organisational district youth president Nirupam Roy,” said the deceased’s family.

There was a lot of rage in the neighbourhood after this incident. A significant number of the locals alleged that Nirupam Roy, the local youth Trinamool leader, supported the murder. He is the Bongaon Trinamool’s organizational district youth president. A mob of enraged villagers began assembling in front of his house on Thursday (September 28) morning. Protesters contended that Nirupam has been trying to exert his influence and clout in the area since he became the Trinamool’s youth president.

Jayant Roy, the deceased’s son, stated that Trinamool leaders and workers in his area, including Sameer, have been constantly harassing them because they are BJP supporters. “They insult us whenever they pass in front of our house. I will continue to protest until I do not get justice,” he lamented.

TMC leader Nirupam Roy, meanwhile, refuted all the allegations. “I demand exemplary punishment for Sameer who has committed this heinous crime. But I am not associated with him or what transpired in any way,” the TMC leader said adding that the protest that was carried out outside his house was a planned conspiracy against him.

S Jaishankar meets US NSA Sullivan in Washington DC, discusses progress in bilateral relationship

0

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday held a meeting with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. Both sides recognized the tremendous progress in bilateral relations this year and discussed taking it forward.

Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, Jaishankar stated, “Began my Washington DC visit with a meeting with NSA @JakeSullivan46. Recognized the tremendous progress in our bilateral relationship this year and discussed taking it forward.”

EAM S Jaishankar on Wednesday (local time) arrived in Washington, DC, where he will be engaging with a number of delegates. Jaishankar arrived from New York in Washington, DC.

During his visit, he will be meeting his US counterpart Antony Blinken along with White House officials, members of the US administration, business leaders and think tanks. Jaishankar will also meet US Trade Representative, Ambassador Katherine Tai in a closed press meeting here in Washington, DC.

Notably, Jaishankar is on a visit to the US from September 22-30. He will also be addressing the 4th World Culture Festival being organised by the Art of Living.

Earlier this month, US President Joe Biden visited New Delhi to attend the G20 Summit under India’s Presidency. During the visit, Biden met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and discussed issues ranging from defence cooperation, and technology sharing.

The US President also congratulated India for the success of the Chandrayaan-3. During this, India and the US also settled the seventh and last outstanding World Trade Organisation (WTO) dispute. Notably, the six previous disputes were resolved during PM Modi’s state visit to the US.

The two leaders called on their governments to continue the work of transforming the India-US Strategic Partnership across all dimensions of our multifaceted global agenda, based on trust and mutual understanding.

After the meeting, both the leaders lauded the India-US relations and said that the friendship between the two nations will continue to play a great role in furthering global good.

“Happy to have welcomed @POTUS @JoeBidento 7, Lok Kalyan Marg. Our meeting was very productive. We were able to discuss numerous topics which will further economic and people-to-people linkages between India and USA. The friendship between our nations will continue to play a great role in furthering global good,” PM Modi said in a post on ‘X’ (formerly known as Twitter).

US President Biden also affirmed support towards making the India-US partnership stronger, closer, and more dynamic. “Great seeing you, Mr Prime Minister. Today, and throughout the G20, we’ll affirm that the United States-India partnership is stronger, closer, and more dynamic than any time in history,” President Biden posted on X.

Earlier on Tuesday, Jaishankar addressed the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. During his address, the EAM said that “political convenience” should not be countenanced in determining responses to terrorism and extremism in an apparent reference to Canada amid a diplomatic standoff between the two countries.

He also said that respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs cannot be exercised in cherry-picking. Jaishankar said there is a thrust on the promotion of a rules-based order and respect for the UN Charter is also invoked and that rules will work only when they apply equally to all.

EAM took a jibe at some nations and said, “In our deliberations, we often advocate the promotion of a rules-based order. From time to time, respect for the UN Charter is also involved. But for all the talk, it is still a few nations that shape the agenda and seek to define the norms. This can’t go on indefinitely nor will it go unchallenged. A fair, equitable and democratic order will surely emerge once we all put our minds to it. And for a start, that means ensuring that rule-makers do not subjugate rule-takers.”

One of the most important relationships in the world: US Ambassador to India after the Embassy issues 1 million visas in the year

0

The United States Embassy in India has established a new record. It has already completed its objective of issuing one million US visas to Indians this year. “The U.S. Mission to India has reached and surpassed its goal to process one million nonimmigrant visa applications in 2023. The Mission has already surpassed the total number of cases processed in 2022 and is processing almost 20% more applications than in pre-pandemic 2019,” said a press release by the US Embassy in India.

U.S. Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti highlighted the contribution of Indians and said, “To all one million applicants, thank you for choosing to be a part of the US-India story. Whether you are studying, working, vacationing or investing, your contributions are a big part of what makes this relationship so great.”

The US Ambassador lauded the India-US partnership and termed it “one of the most important relationships in the world.” He asserted that the bonds among the people of the two countries are stronger than ever. The official stated, “Our partnership with India is one of the United States’ most important bilateral relationships and in fact one of the most important relationships in the world. The ties between our people are stronger than ever, and we will continue our record-setting volume of visa work in the coming months to give as many Indian applicants as possible the opportunity to travel to the United States and experience the US-India friendship firsthand.”

He discussed the adjustments made to reach such high numbers and disclosed that President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Narendra Modi had asked for the expediting of visas. As a result, extra staff members were hired and a system overhaul was put into place.

He noted, “PM Modi and President Biden had said let’s do a better job of moving faster on visas. So, MEA here approved more bodies in places like Hyderabad, more people who can work on visas, we changed our systems, worked harder and smarter and we have processed a million visa applications this year today officially. We just have to continue to prepare for the future.”

The statement called it as is one of the most active travel relationships in the world with over 1.2 million Indians travelling to the United States in the past year. “Indians now represent over 10% of all visa applicants worldwide, including 20% of all student visa applicants and 65% of all H&L-category (employment) visa applicants. The United States welcomes this growth.”

It mentioned that the Western power continued to make significant investments in its operations in India in recognition of the persistently high demand for U.S. visas. “In the past year, the Mission has expanded its staffing to facilitate more visa processing than ever before. The Mission has made significant capital improvements to existing facilities, such as the U.S. Consulate in Chennai, and has inaugurated a new Consulate building in Hyderabad.”

It further added, “The Mission has also implemented strategies to increase efficiency, extending interview waiver eligibility to new visa categories and utilizing remote work to allow staff around the world to contribute to Indian visa processing.” The press release read that the country’s mission intended to launch a pilot programme early in the next year that would let qualified H&L-category employment visa applicants renew their domestic visas.

The mission made reference to the joint declaration issued by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Joe Biden during his recent visit to India and pointed out that the two nations have a “close and enduring” alliance. It affirmed, “Improved visa processing is only one example of the U.S. Mission to India’s ongoing commitment to strengthening that partnership.”

Brothers Sualin, Rizwan and a minor rape and kill 7-year-old neighbour, hide her body in a sack on their terrace: Horrifying case emerges in Aligarh

0

On Tuesday, September 26, a 7-year-old girl was raped and strangulated to death by her three neighbours in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. According to the police, all three accused, who were brothers, namely Sualin, Rizwan and one other, who is a minor, have been charged with murder, but the eldest among the brothers has also been charged with raping the minor. They have also been charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Notably, the Aligarh police took to X to issue a statement on the aforementioned incident. Calling it an old incident, the police informed that two accused were arrested and sent to jail. The accused and the deceased belonged to the same religious community, the police added.

It is pertinent to note here that OpIndia has deliberately not mentioned the name of the third accused as he is a minor. The police took him into custody, however, he was not sent to jail but was instead placed under police observation because he is a minor.

The incident happened in the Turkman Gate area of Kotwali police station in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. The case came to the fore when the minor’s parents filed a missing complaint with the police on September 26.

The Aligarh police recovered the girl’s body from a sack in the bathroom of her neighbour’s terrace. The accused had planned to dispose of the body late at night, they added.

Notably, the police in its statement said that two accused were arrested but Indian Express quoted Kalanidhi Naithani, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Aligarh as saying that all three accused have been arrested.

“We have arrested the three brothers after recovering the body from the bathroom in their house which has a common boundary with that of the victim’s place of living. The possibility of rape cannot be ruled out though the confirmation will be only after we get the report of her medical examination,” TIE quoted the Aligarh SSP as saying.

The police said that around 10 a.m. on Tuesday, the deceased girl’s parents had sent her to the nearby market to buy more stuff. Her parents kept looking for her until late in the evening but when their efforts failed, they went to the police station to lodge a missing complaint.

Based on the CCTV footage and the accused’s sister’s statement, the police raided the house of the accused and found the girl’s body tied in a sack in a storeroom’s bathroom on the terrace. The body was sent for post mortem and the police launched a manhunt and arrested the accused on the same day.

“We checked the available CCTV footage in the locality and were told by the sister of the accused brothers that she had seen the victim with them in the afternoon. We reached the house and searched extensively only to find her body in a sack hidden in the bathroom on the first floor,” said the in-charge of the area police station.

According to the authorities, the victim’s father works in a lock factory in the town, and she was the third among four siblings.

Speaking to OpIndia local Utthan News journalist Isha Roy revealed that the accused had strangulated the minor and hid her body in the toilet of a storeroom on their terrace. We were told that the accused, after killing the minor, approached her mother several times between 12 noon to 2 pm on Tuesday to inquire about her. To prove themselves innocent, they also pretended to help the deceased’s parents look for her in the neighbourhood.

While looking for her missing child, the girl’s mother ran upon the accused’s younger sister. She inquired about the whereabouts of the child. Inadvertently, the accused sister told the mother that she had last seen the child with her brothers on the terrace. The accused sister added that she too was on the terrace but her brothers had sent her down for some work. When she didn’t see the child after that, she concluded that she must have gone home, she said.

According to our source, the accused had hidden the girl’s body in the bathroom on their terrace and planned to dispose of it later that night. They had hired an e-rickshaw and were waiting for the night to fall so they could take the body and dump it somewhere far away in a drain. Their plans, however, were thwarted when the police apprehended them before they could execute it.

Official website of Canadian Armed Forces hacked, pro-India group ‘Indian Cyber Force’ claims responsibility

0

On Wednesday, September 27, amid the ongoing disturbances between India and Canada, a group of hackers who call themselves ‘Indian Cyber Force’ hacked the official website of the Canadian Armed Forces. The website was accessible due to the cyber attack, but it was restored sometime later. Canadian news website, the Globe and Mail reported that pro-Indian hackers had disabled the website, however, the group that claimed responsibility for the attack has no official links to New Delhi.

The group of hackers who called themselves ‘Indian Cyber Force’ informed on Telegram, Twitter, and other social media accounts that the official website of the Canadian Armed Forces viz www.forces.ca website had been taken down.

The hackers claimed that the duration of the disruption on the website would last for around 2 hours. The same was confirmed by Daniel Le Bouthillier, head of media relations at the Department of National Defence in Canada. “The disruption started at about noon but was rectified later that afternoon. Some desktop users could still access the website, while most mobile devices could not,” he said.

As per the reports, the alleged cyberattack is thought to have been a “distributed denial of service” (DDoS) attempt meant to send the Canadian government a message.

Notably, DDoS attacks are generally brief, lasting no longer than a few hours or days. DDoS assaults are typically used by hacking groups of online activists to bring attention to themselves rather than as a genuine means of doing harm.

The matter is being looked at by the Canadian Forces, which represent all military operations for Canada, including the navy, special command units, air, and space operations.

Notably, the group had published a message alluding to the cyber operation a week previous to the claimed hacking effort. “Get ready to feel the power of IndianCyberForce attacks will be launching on Canada cyberspace… it’s for the mess you started,” read the message.

In an unexpected assertion last week, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said his country’s intelligence agencies were looking into a “potential link” between “agents of the Indian government” and Nijjar’s death. Nijjar was referred to as a “Canadian citizen” by Trudeau.

In retaliation to Ottawa’s removal of an Indian official over the case, New Delhi clearly rejected the charges as “absurd” and “motivated,” and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat.

Nijjar, one of India’s most wanted terrorists, with a Rs 10 lakh cash reward on his head, was shot dead on June 18 by two unidentified shooters outside a gurudwara in Surrey. He was the Khalistan Tiger Force’s (KTF) commander.

In a strongly worded statement, India said that Canada’s claims appeared to be “politically motivated” and urged the Trudeau government to crack down hard on terrorists and anti-India elements operating on its soil. As a result of the diplomatic blockade over Nijjar’s murder, India has now suspended visa services for Canadians.

Recently, on Monday, September 25, the Indian Government also announced that it was in the process of canceling the registration of over a dozen Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card holders for carrying out pro-Khalistan activities and anti-India propaganda.
