Prophet Muhammad row: Actor Kangana Ranaut backs Nupur Sharma, says she is ‘entitled to her opinions’

Actor Kangana Ranaut has come out in support of former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma, stating that she is ‘entitled to her opinions’ over angry reactions from the Arab countries after the politician cited texts from Islamic Hadiths to comment on Prophet Muhammad.

Taking to her Instagram story, the actor condemned death threats to the former BJP spokesperson, who had been at the receiving end of Islamist ire following her comments on Prophet Muhammad. Ranaut urged people to take legal recourse if they wanted to oppose the remarks made by her during a TV debate about 10 days ago.

“Nupur is entitled to her opinions, I see all kinds of threats targeted at her when Hindu Gods are insulted which they are almost every day, we go to court, plz do that no need to play dons yourself, this is not Afghanistan, we have a proper functioning government which is chosen with a process called democracy… just a reminder for those who keep forgetting,” the actor wrote.

Ranaut’s stand in support of Nupur Sharma comes hours after Delhi Police provided security to the former BJP leader and her family after she alleged that she has been receiving threats and was being harassed over her remarks.

Nupur Sharma receives death threats over remarks on Prophet Muhammad as Islamic nations condemn her statements

Sharma has hogged the limelight for quoting authentic Islamic hadiths on Prophet Muhammad that had the Islamists around the country and the globe baying for her blood. The controversy erupted after AltNews co-founder Mohammed Zubair dog whistled about the remarks she made on Prophet Muhammad in a debate on Times Now, following which a bevvy of Islamists descended on her timeline, abusive her and issuing vile threats against her and her family. Usually quick to pursue meaningless fact-checks, AltNews and Zubair have since then refrained from fact-checking statements made by her in the debate.

The controversy escalated after many Islamic monarchies in the Arab world, where the rights of religious minorities are virtually non-existent, proceeded to condemn the statements made by Nupur Sharma and sanctimoniously sought an explanation from India. Facing an unprecedented diplomatic storm, the BJP suspended Nupur Sharma from the party. In the suspension letter, the party’s central disciplinary committee wrote, “You have expressed views contrary to the party’s position on various matters… Pending further inquiry, you are suspended from the party and from your responsibilities with immediate effect.”

Violence erupts during PFI protest march to Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan’s residence over arrests made in Alappuzha hate speech row

In Thiruvananthapuram, on Monday, a rally held by radical Islamic outfit Popular Front of India (PFI) turned violent. At around 12 noon, members of the outfit took out a march toward Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s official residence ‘Cliff House’ against the arrest of Popular Front leaders following the hate slogans given by a child in a recent rally in Alappuzha.

PFI members smashed barricades and hurled bottles at police during an agitation against the LDF government in Kerala in response to the actions taken against PFI leaders after the Alappuzha hate speech controversy. Led by the state leadership of the Popular Front, the march was announced on the grounds that the leaders were being imprisoned on false charges.

The march quickly erupted into clashes at the Devaswom Board Junction. The PFI members tried to jump over the police barricades. The attempts to challenge the law and order situation were curtailed when the police used water cannons at the protestors. To bring the situation under control, the police used tear gas shells and grenades to disperse the crowd.

The situation near the CM’s residence resulted in a traffic jam that continued until 2 PM when the agitators left the scene. Six people were taken to the hospital following the incident. A video from the PFI rally held on May 21 had gone viral on social media in which a child was giving death threats to Hindus and Christians. Following the matter, The Kerala High Court had directed the Police to take strict action in the matter. The Kerala Police have arrested 20 people so far, including the father of the boy who gave the threatful slogans.

At a PFI rally in Alappuzha, Muslim boy chants for death to Hindus

In the incendiary videos that had gone viral on social media, a boy was seen shouting, “Be ready for your death rituals if you won’t live in our land quietly. Be ready with rice flakes to fill your mouth, if you won’t live quietly (For Hindus). Be ready to burn amber in your home if you won’t live quietly (For Christians).” This came as a direct threat to the Hindu and Christian population living in Kerala, with PFI warning the death penalty if they don’t fall in line.

Further, the boy said, “We are coming, we are your death. We won’t go to Pakistan or Bangladesh, you have to live here as we say, or else we know how to make you live quietly, we will kill you even if we are attacked. We take pride in being a martyr, we salute them. If you won’t live quietly, we know how to ask for ‘Azadi’. Be prepared for your death,” the PFI members shouted after the boy in Malayalam.

Kolkata Police arrests vlogger Roddur Roy from Goa for ‘derogatory’ remarks against Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee

On Tuesday, the Kolkata Police arrested video blogger Roddur Roy from Goa on charges of abusing West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee and her nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee during Facebook Live session over the KK concert death. “Roddur Roy has been arrested in Goa and will be brought to Kolkata on transit remand,” a senior Kolkata police official was quoted.

According to the reports, Trinamool Congress spokesperson Riju Dutta on June 4 filed a police complaint at Chitpur police station against Roy for using derogatory remarks against CM Mamata Banerjee. The complaint stated that Roy during the Facebook Live session over the KK concert death made fun of Banerjee’s literary award.

He also criticized the West Bengal government over the death of singer KK after a concert in Kolkata on May 31. Dutta in his complaint stated that Roy was a repeat offender and had ‘maligned the state of West Bengal’ and ‘perennially uses derogatory remarks against our police force’. Reports mention that later Roy also posted a video on YouTube challenging the police to arrest him.

Dutta on June 7 saluted the Kolkata Police for taking prompt action against Roy. “This Vile person Roddur Roy who recently abused our Hon’ble CM Mamata Banerjee and our Nat GS. Sh Abhishek Banerjee, Mayor Jb. Firhad Hakim and Sh Madan Mitra are arrested by Goa. I, Salute Kolkata Police for this prompt action”, he tweeted.

Roy is known for his controversial social media posts and YouTube videos making derogatory comments against politicians and leaders. Earlier in the year 2020, he had posted a video in which he was seen abusing PM Narendra Modi, the National Flag of India, and the country. “Go to hell PM Narendra Modi, Go to hell India. I need dopes”, he roughly said in the video.

No action was initiated against him after his disparaging video against PM Modi. Also, in the same year, the Kolkata Police had initiated an investigation against Roy, for allegedly hurting people’s sentiments by vulgar distortions of Rabindranath Tagore’s songs. He had shot to fame after these videos, in which he replaced the lyrics in Tagore’s songs with expletives, went viral on social media.

However, within days after the YouTuber had posted a nasty video criticising Mamata Banerjee over singer KK’s death, the vlogger had to pay the price, with the Kolkata Police hightailing it to Goa and arresting him.

‘Bag containing money sent to CM Pinarayi Vijayan in Dubai’: Swapna Suresh says she has more to reveal in Kerala Gold scam case, alleges threat to life

Swapna Suresh, one of the prime accused in the Kerala gold smuggling case, said on Monday that she has a lot to reveal about the case but alleged a threat to her life. She has raised serious allegations against CM Pinaryi Vijayan and his family. Swapna Suresh had gone to record her secret statement under Section 164 before a Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Kochi. The statement recording continued on Tuesday.

While speaking to reporters after her deposition before the court on Tuesday, Swapna alleged that a bag containing money was sent to CM Vijayan when he was in Dubai in 2016.

She told the media that in her statement recorded under section 164, she informed the court about the involvement of Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, his former principal secretary M Sivasankar, CM’s wife Kamala, daughter Veena, his additional private secretary C M Raveendran, former bureaucrat Nalini Netto, and former minister K T Jaleel in the Gold smuggling scam.

Recalling how the entire scam began, Swapna Suresh said, “It all began way back in 2016 when the CM was on a trip to UAE. It was then that Sivasankar contacted me first since I was the secretary in the consulate. He told me that the chief minister had forgotten one of his bags and it had to be taken to Dubai immediately. We sent the bag to the CM through a diplomat in the consulate. When it was brought to the consulate we found that there was money in it. That’s how it all started.”

Notably, Swapna had approached the Special Court for Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) to record her statement under Section 164 of CrPC in the money laundering case related to the gold smuggling case probed by the enforcement directorate (ED). Following her petition, the special court assigned the Ernakulam Chief Judicial Magistrate Court to assign a magistrate to record her statement.

Swapna Suresh added that the money was detected after the luggage was scanned as part of the consulate’s protocol. She, however, refrained from disclosing which country’s currency was there in the bag.

She further said that on M Sivsankar’s orders, biryani vessels containing heavy metals were transported from the consulate general’s house to the Cliff House, the CM’s official residence. “These vessels had heavy objects other than biryani. I can’t reveal everything right now. I will make further revelations when the time is right,” she added.

Swapna Suresh names CM Pinarayi Vijayan and three other ministers in the Gold smuggling case

Notably, Swapna Suresh, in the past has also leveled serious allegations against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and three ministers of his cabinet pertaining to the Gold smuggling case. Last year, ahead of the crucial assembly elections in Kerala, the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) government had been pushed into a tight spot after Swapna Suresh had revealed to the Customs Department that Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan was very much involved in the gold and dollar smuggling cases.

In a sensational disclosure, Swapna Suresh reportedly also detailed Kerala CM Vijayan’s close connections with the previous UAE Consul General.

In October 2020, Suresh had also revealed to the Enforcement Directorate (ED) that the Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had held multiple meetings with the Consul General of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2017.

Kerala Gold Scam

In July 2020, the Customs officials in Kerala had nabbed a former employee of the UAE Consulate in Kerala named Sarith who had divulged that Swapna Suresh, also a former staffer, had forged documents to misuse diplomatic privileges, to smuggle gold from UAE illegally.

On July 5, Suresh’s baggage, marked with the UAE Consulate address, was held at the airport. Swapna Suresh worked as the marketing liaison officer of Space Park under the Kerala State IT Infrastructure Limited (KSITIL) which comes directly under the IT department.

The call details of the main accused, Swapna Suresh, revealed that the accused was in regular touch with Kerala’s Higher Education minister KT Jaleel.

Why did the government act the way it did in the Nupur Sharma episode

Former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma came under a lot of criticism, received several death threats, and eventually got suspended from her party after she quoted hadiths and upset a lot of Islamists in the process who called it ‘blasphemy’. During a debate on the Times Now channel on the discovery of Shivling inside the disputed Gyanvapi structure, responding to the insults of Shivling, Nupur asked what will happen if she insults other religions the way Shivling and Hinduism have been mocked in the past few weeks.

She did not even have to do it, just asking this ‘what if’ question led to widespread outrage in India and abroad. It almost created even a diplomatic crisis as Indian allies in Gulf also took note of Nupur’s comments and registered their unhappiness over the ‘blasphemous’ comments by Nupur. Following the outrage, BJP suspended Nupur Sharma from the party’s primary membership and issued a statement denouncing ‘offensive remarks’ against any religious figure.

BJP supporters left disappointed with the decision to suspend Nupur Sharma

Following BJP’s decision to suspend Nupur Sharma, the party leadership including Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been getting a lot of flak from the party’s supporters. Several party supporters have argued that the party leadership should have stood by Nupur and her remarks even in the face of the outrage from the Arab world.

The decision to suspend Nupur was seen by many as the party’s betrayal of its supporters. OpIndia’s chief editor, Nupur Sharma (who has been tragicomically confused with the former BJP spokesperson in the past few days) also penned an editorial expressing her disappointment with the BJP over the move.

Among all this, the government has been tight-lipped over the incident and hasn’t issued any statement after suspending Nupur. There has been no formal briefing by the party either explaining in detail why the step was taken, which came after the party was seen standing by Nupur Sharma initially. This has led to a lot of murmurs and rumors about the reason the party and the government acted this way.

Making sense of the government’s stand

Among all the criticism, there have been some voices of support for the decision by the BJP and the Indian government. US-based lawyer Kartikeya Tanna argued in his Firstpost column that the decision to suspend Nupur was indeed a rational one by the BJP.

Tanna argues that since Nupur Sharma’s comments are most likely punishable under India’s own laws (multiple FIRs have been registered against Nupur since her comments), India couldn’t have spoiled its hard-earned relationship with West Asia over it. Tanna also highlighted that it is BJP’s own motto to put the nation first and the individual last, so if India’s best interests are served by suspending an individual, that party would always choose to do that.

Strong India-GCC ties over the last 8 years

During the 8 years of the Modi government, Indian ties with the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries, namely Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait, have grown by leaps and bounds. The GCC countries have stood by India despite the best efforts of Pakistan to instigate these Islamic nations against India. Even when India passed Citizenship Amendment Act or removed article 370 in Kashmir, they supported the Indian stand despite Pakistan’s best efforts to get them to criticize India.

Oil has always been an essential commodity and in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, even more so. India relies on GCC countries for most of its oil and gas supply, and can’t afford to deliberately offend them. All these GCC countries were upset at Nupur’s remarks, and most of them officially registered their unhappiness over Nupur’s remarks.

Then there is the question of millions of Indians working in the Gulf. Indians are the largest expatriate group in the GCC and their jobs and safety couldn’t be put at risk by the government over one individual’s comments. Even though a Gulf without Indians is hard to imagine, but even if there is 0.01% risk that Indians abroad would suffer over an individual’s comments in India then is it really a risk worth taking?

Last but not the least, there are over 200 million Muslims in India. Narendra Modi is as much their Prime Minister as he is of the rest of the population. Nupur Sharma was not making those comments in her personal capacity, but as a representative of the BJP and in turn the government. Can government keep a spokesperson who offends over 200 million people even if it was in retaliation to offensive comments from others?

It must not have been an easy decision for BJP, knowing fully well that their supporters would be disappointed by it, but then, governance isn’t easy and full of such difficult decisions. In the absence of any official statement from the government explaining the rationale behind the decision to suspend Nupur, speculation is rife about the government’s reasons. Hopefully, once tempers settle down and everyone has cooled down, someone from the government will explain why exactly did they take this decision at an appropriate forum.

Brits wave at the hologram of Queen Elizabeth; Prince Harry and Meghan Markle booed: How the UK is celebrating Queen’s 70 years

On June 5, Sunday, the British people lined up the London streets to see a hologram of Queen Elizabeth II in her 260-year-old gilded state chariot driving through with ceremonial guards as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. The people in the crowd were seen cheering and waving back at the hologram as it passed through the streets of London.

In the visuals that have emerged on social media, the hologram of the Queen, which was from her younger years when she was coronated in 1953, was seen waving at the tens of thousands who had gathered to witness the celebrations. The crowd too cheered and waved back at the Queen’s hologram image as it passed through them.

It was a three-kilometre parade with 10,000 people in attendance. Hundreds of troops and women marched through the streets wearing breastplates and plumed feathers, including Guardsmen, Gurkhas, Royal Marines, and the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment.

The 96-year-old queen was unable to attend the celebrations in person due to mobility issues pertaining to her old age. Instead, holograms of the queen appeared on the carriage’s windows, giving the impression that she was inside, waving to the thousands of spectators lining the streets. The ecstatic mob cheered and waved back with much the same fervour as if the Queen herself were present inside the coach.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle booed while leaving the Thanksgiving ceremony honouring Queen Elizabeth

Meanwhile, videos surfaced showing Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle being booed as they arrived and left the church service honouring Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne on Friday, June 3. Prince Harry and his wife Meghan Markle had made their first public appearance at the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in the UK since stepping back from royal duties two years ago.

They attended the Trooping the Colour, albeit they did not appear on the Buckingham Palace balcony owing to their withdrawal from royal responsibilities. On June 3, the couple attended the traditional church service with other members of the British royal family but were booed by onlookers as they entered and exited St. Paul’s Cathedral.

According to reports, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Platinum Jubilee tour had been cut short. The couple, along with their three-year-old son Archie and one-year-old daughter Lilibet, returned to California on Sunday. The family allegedly flew out of Farnborough Airport on a private plane, missing the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, which marked the end of Queen Elizabeth II’s four-day celebrations.

On February 6, this year, the Queen became the longest-serving British monarch, with a reign of 70 years and counting. Platinum Jubilee celebrations took place between June 2 and 5. The traditional Trooping the Colour balcony appearance, a National Thanksgiving Service at the St. Paul’s Cathedral, a Royal Air Force flypast, and beacon lighting were among the events, in addition to the Queen’s hologram travelling across London.

ED raids premises of AAP minister Satyendra Jain, recovers over 2.8 crore cash, 133 gold coins

A day after conducting raids at the residence and other locations linked to Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi Minister Satyendra Jain, the Enforcement Directorate officials on Tuesday recovered bundles of hard cash, gold coins and biscuits from Jain’s premises.

According to the reports, the ED has recovered Rs 2.23 crores of cash from Ram Prakash Jewellers, Rs 41.5 lakh from Vaibhav Jain and Rs 20 lakh from GS Matharoo. Along with hard cash, 133 gold coins weighing 1.8 kgs have also been recovered from Vaibhav Jain. Notably, the ED also recovered various incriminating documents and digital records from the premises of Satyendar Jain and his aides. Jain is currently in ED’s custody till June 9 in connection to the money laundering case involving a company from Kolkata.

The ED yesterday conducted raids against Jain as part of a money-laundering probe linked to an alleged hawala dealings case being conducted against him. The officials stated that the raids, including that at the residential premises of Jain in Delhi and other locations, were being conducted as part of a follow up in the case. On May 30, Jain was arrested by ED under the provisions of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. He was sent to ED’s custody by the trial court on May 31.

Earlier, the trial court had allowed the presence of a lawyer during the interrogation. The lawyer was allowed to be present at a distance from where he could not listen to anything but could see what was happening. However, the Delhi High Court stayed the order. The Judge had reserved the order on the ED’s plea challenging the direction. The Judge said as there was no FIR or complaint against the minister, Jain could not claim the right of a lawyer present during the recording of the statement.

It is important to note that Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal has time and again defended Jain as an honest person and had said that he is being framed in a false case. CM Kejriwal said in a press conference that he had himself examined the case against Jain and that it was ‘fake’. He said, “I have studied the case against Jain. It is completely fake and motivated by political reasons. We have faith in the judiciary. Jain is following the path of truth, and he will come out clean.”

The case against Satyendra Jain

In August 2017, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed an FIR against Satyendra Jain in a money laundering case. The ED had registered a criminal case against the AAP leader based on this FIR which was lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in which it had been alleged that Jain could not explain the source of funds received by four companies in which he was a shareholder. The companies have reportedly laundered money to the tune of Rs 16.39 crores from 2010 to 2014.

In November 2019, the Home Ministry approved the prosecution of Delhi minister Satyendra Jain in cases related to disproportionate assets and money laundering. In April this year, the Enforcement Directorate provisionally attached immovable properties worth Rs. 4.81 crore owned by companies named Akinchan Developers Pvt. Ltd, Indo Metal Impex Pvt Ltd, and others under the PMLA, 2002. The action was taken in connection with the disproportionate asset and money laundering case registered against AAP minister Satyendra Jain, his wife Poonam Jain, and others.

Jamia Millia: Islamists and Leftist students bar ABVP from holding awareness event on waste management, shut campus gates amid chants of ‘Allah-hu-Akbar’

On June 6, a heavy police force was called outside Jamia Millia Islamia University to stop students linked to Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) from holding an event on the environment. Islamists and left-wing students shut the gates of the University to bar the speaker Imteyaz Ali (renowned environmentalist) and Akshit Dahiya (President DUSU) from entering the premises for the event.

They chanted slogans like ‘Nara-e-Takbeer Allah-Hu-Akbar,’ ‘ABVP Campus Chodo’ and ‘ABVP Murdabad’. The protest against the event was organized by students of CFI (Student Wing of infamous Islamist organization Popular Front of India), (Dayar-I-Shauq Students Charter) DISSC, a left-wing student organization of Jamia. The protesters were holding placards with slogans like ‘ABVP Tera Naam Islamophobia’, “Hatemongers are not allowed in Jamia’, ‘ABVP gundo Jamia chodo’ and ‘Najeeb ke hathyaron ko, ek dhakka aur do’.

The series of events that happened at Jamia

A talk was scheduled was the members of ABVP under the banner of Students For Development at Jamia Millia Islamia on ‘Waste Management And Atmanirbhar Bharat’ from 3 PM onwards at the Centre for Management Studies Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi. Renowned environmentalist Imteyaz Ali and DUSU President Akshit Dahiya were invited to the event.

Speaking to OpIndia, ABVP leader Gunjan Singh Khokar said they had permission for the event. In a letter to the director of the Centre for Management Studies dated June 3, 2022, the details of the event were mentioned.

The situation got tense at the campus when the speaker and the attendees of the event were stopped at the Campus gate by CFI and DISSC students. They claimed that the speaker would give a provocative speech at the event, and they “could not allow it.” Furthermore, they were irked by the fact that the event was organized by the members of ABVP, and Akshit Dahiya, who is an ABVP leader, was invited as a guest at the event. The protesting students also claimed that Imteyaz Ali would give a provocative speech during the event, which was categorically denied by Ali himself while talking to OpIndia.

When SFD members asked the administration to open the gates and allow them to enter, they were told that no event could be allowed due to ongoing exams. Gunjan said, “It was an absurd excuse as on the same day an event was organized in the campus where UPSC topped Shruti Sharma was the speaker. Vice-Chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia Prof Nazma Akhtar and other office bearers attended the event. If our event was not allowed because of the exams, how the other event was held without any issue?”

Gunjan said the gates were open till Imteyaz Ali and Akshit Dahiya arrived. As soon as they reached the gate of the University, the Proctor ordered them to close the gates. He added, “Members of SFD were held back, and their phones were taken away. They were forced to write an application and the administration also called their homes. Later, we were pushed out of the campus, but the students of left organizations remained inside the campus.”

Furthermore, he said, “They were raising slogans and abusing us, but no one asked them to stop. Only we were targeted by the administration. Later we decided to hold a 15-minute talk at the gate as there was no chance that we would be allowed inside. When we will sitting at the gate, the Police arrived and asked us to move from there.

We requested SHO to complete our 15-minute talk that they allowed. Towards the end, we all took an oath to save the environment. To cause more trouble, the students started raising slogans from inside while we were taking the oath. They raised slogans like Allah-hu-Akbar and ABVP Campus Chodo.”

In retaliation, SFD students raised ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Vande Matram’ slogans. Gunjan added, “When we raised the slogans in retaliation, the Police took us away, but no one asked the students to stop sloganeering from inside the campus.” The gates remained closed for 2-3 hours. Gunjan said we were told that we should have taken permission from the Registrar and Proctor. He said, “When we were holding an event in the department, then why would we approach Registrar for the permission. We took permission from the Dean, and it was his responsibility to inform the Proctor and Registrar. As a matter of fact, we had forwarded the permission letter to Proctor as well, but we were not allowed to hold the event.”

When SFD opposed the decision of the administration, they claimed that the permission for the event was revoked to avoid a clash. Gunjan said, “In that case, what would happen if Prime Minister himself comes for an event in the future? Will they deny permission to the event where the PM is scheduled to speak on the basis of ‘avoiding the clash’? The thing is, the situation at Jamia is a person of our ideology cannot speak his or her mind freely at the campus.”

‘I am still in shock’

Speaking to OpIndia, Imteyaz Ali said he was still in shock that the protesters claimed he was there to give a provocative speech. He said, “I never associate myself with a particular party, group, organization, or ideology. For me, the environment has the top priority. It does not matter to me who has called me. I have given lectures not only at ABVP or RSS programs on the environment but also in schools, colleges, villages, government events, and others. I was in utter shock when they did not allow us to go inside, claiming I would give a provocative speech.” Imteyaz also expressed his displeasure in a Facebook post.

Imteyaz added, “I tried to talk to them. I asked them to look at my profile. I invited them to attend the event and asked them to record what I said there. There was no way I would have said anything provocative. My job is to educate people about plastic waste management. I had prepared a one and half hour lecture for the same. My intention was to educate students about job opportunities in the waste management sector. Also, I had prepared a plan on how Jamia can become zero-waste in the coming years. I wanted to teach students to make their campus an example in waste management, but the administration did not allow me to speak.”

Speaking about the slogans that were raised at the campus, he said, “I do not understand why slogans like ‘Allah-hu-Akbar’ were raised at the campus. These slogans have no space at an educational institute. I felt like I was standing not in India but in Pakistan.” Ali said till 1 PM no one knew the event would not be allowed, which was unacceptable.

In a reply to the comment, Imteyaz expressed how bad he felt while hearing the slogans at Jamia. Source: Facebook

He said, “I am a committee member at HRD. I will make sure to raise the issue in the ministry. I will also write to the President about the issue. I am pained to see such an environment at a reputed institute in India’s capital.”

Who is Imteyaz Ali?

Imteyaz Ali is a renowned environmentalist who specializes in plastic waste management. His waste-management model, popular as the name Bhopal Model, has been replicated by the government of India at the national level. Using his model, roads have been built using plastic waste not only in India but in 13 other nations. He is also a member of Deen Dayal Research Institute, Chitrakoot.

As support for Nupur Sharma grows, an old video of her debating fiercely with Arnab Goswami goes viral: What it says about her

An old video of former BJP politician Nupur Sharma is making rounds on social media platforms after she has attracted criticism and death threats from Islamists for her comments on Prophet Mohammed in a TV debate on Times Now. In the video from 2008, young Nupur Sharma as an Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) leader can be seen fiercely debating with the then Times Now editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami over a protest against separatist leader SAR Geelani at the Delhi University campus.

The old video of Nupur Sharma is from 2008 when she served as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU). During her stint as the President, she once led a group of ABVP activists to protest against DU Professor SAR Geelani who was accused and later acquitted of the involvement in the Parliament Attacks of 2001. An incident so happened that one of the agitators during the agitation spat on the controversial leader who was conducting a seminar on ‘Communalism, Fascism and Democracy Rhetoric and Reality” at the Delhi University campus.

Nupur Sharma, as a leader of the agitation, was accused of creating disturbance and violence during the seminar by Geelani. She was called upon by Arnab Goswami of Times Now for an open debate with SAR Geelani over the issue. Sharma was seen vigorously arguing that while she did lead the protest, it was not proved that the person who spat on Geelani was a member of the ABVP. She said that a number of other student groups had also joined the agitation alongside the ABVP against SAR Geelani’s divisive ideology.

In the debate, Nupur Sharma said that Geelani was acquitted by the Supreme court due to a lack of technical evidence. Geelani, who taught Arabic at Delhi University’s Zakir Hussain College, was arrested in connection with the 2001 Parliament attack case. He was later acquitted for the want of evidence by the Delhi High Court in October 2003 and by the apex court in August 2005.

Geelani had organised an event against the hanging of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru. He was charged with sedition for the same.

“We (ABVP) come directly under the RSS. While ABVP was formed in 1949, BJP came in much later,” Nupur Sharma said. Even after Goswami demanded an apology from her for the act of spitting, Sharma declined to do so, adding that no ABVP person had spat on Geelani.

Even after strong-worded questions from Arnab Goswami, Nupur Sharma can be seen holding her ground for her version of the truth. The video completes a full circle in the rise of Nupur Sharma from being a student activist to a politician. Never one to give up on her stand, Nupur resolutely and fearlessly fielded questions from Arnab Goswami, putting her point eloquently and vigorously, without a modicum of doubt in the mind of her organisation’s culpability. She was clear that the person who had spat on Geelani was not from ABVP and had backed herself to the hilt while debating with Arnab Goswami.

Nupur Sharma receives death threats for statements on Prophet Muhammad that were derived from Islamic hadiths

Sharma, who did not cede an inch in her debate with Arnab, is currently in the limelight for quoting authentic Islamic hadiths on Prophet Muhammad that had the Islamists around the country and the globe baying for her blood.

Many Hindus still think what Nupur Sharma said was ‘unnecessary’: Here is a necessary read for them

On the 5th of June, BJP suspended the now-former spokesperson of the party, Nupur Sharma, after certain Muslim countries started getting irate about certain comments she had made during a debate (basically, quoting the Hadit). The BJP claimed that Nupur had taken a stand contrary to theirs on several occasions and therefore, an inquiry would be initiated against her pending which she would stand suspended from the party – a party she had been associated with for over 15 years.

The move led to widespread condemnation predominantly from those who support and vote for the BJP since the move was seen as the party taking away institutional support from her amidst death and rape threats by Islamists. Those who prefer to support the party with utmost loyalty have theorised that she is being given protection against the threats she has been receiving, however, her suspension is in the national interest because India cannot afford to dent its hard-won relationship with the Muslim world. I would not be getting into that argument since it is beyond the scope of this article.

However, there were certain other arguments made to essentially justify the suspension of Nupur Sharma. One of the most predominant ones relied on the classic argument – ‘But it was unnecessary for Nupur to get into that argument’, ‘It was unnecessary for her to insult their faith’, ‘It was unnecessary for her to lose her patience on national television? Does she not know they get violence about perceived blasphemy?”.

The obvious problem with this argument is that it essentially blames the victim. By saying this, even if it is said with reference to her suspension, one tacitly ends up justifying the threats that she has been at the receiving end of. The Islamists use exactly this argument to justify their calls for “Sar Tan Se Juda’. They say, “Nupur Sharma should have known that if she comments on Prophet Muhammad, we will get offended and demand her head”. The logical slide of this argument is staggering. If the “She should have known better” argument is to be accepted, every victim of every crime can be shamed using it. One basically places far more value on someone’s whim than facts when one uses this argument – Because Nupur Sharma chose to legitimately exercise her freedom of expression, the calls to behead her are justified because she should have known that her speech can lead to hurt feelings which can, in turn, lead to her execution.

But beyond the logical slide of that argument, there is a civilisational aspect that is far more concerning. First and foremost, we perhaps need to understand the civilisational illiteracy from which this argument stems.

For the longest time, Indians, even in schools, have been fed with tropes about all religions being equal. It is a trope that has made Indians, especially Hindus, rather blind to reality and insufferably sanctimonious. One of the reasons why certain Hindus believe that Nupur Sharma’s comments were “unnecessary” is because they truly believe that all religions are fundamentally equal and it is not completely abnormal to be offended when remarks about one’s faith are made. That argument is not off the mark – it is natural to be a little hurt – but it is certainly not the characteristic of every faith to give calls to behead. What is also untrue is that all religions are equal.

The ‘all religions are equal’ claim stems from notions of religious pluralism. Religious Pluralism essentially says that firstly, all religions must acknowledge that certain truths exist in other religions as well, thereby declaring that it is not only their own religion that is the ‘only truth’. Further, it says that all religions must acknowledge that every religion teaches basic universal truths that have been taught since before the advent of religion itself.

When one delves into the principles of religious pluralism as a construct that can enable religions to co-exist without sectarian violence, it becomes important to ensure that all religions are brought down to the same surface level and hence, the claim that all religions are the same takes a beastly proportion where cultural context is often lost. At the very outset, it suffices to say that Islam lays out a doctrine for the humiliation of Kafirs.

When verses of the Quran ordain its followers to slay Kafirs and Polytheists, one has to wonder how can a religion that is at odds with Polytheism be equal and aspire for the same goals as that of a Polytheistic religion? When Islam is at odds with Polytheism and the religious texts explicitly mention the subjugation of any Polytheist faith, how accurate is it to say that all religions are exactly the same?

Therefore, why it is “necessary” for Hindus to talk about, dissect and analyse Islam openly and honestly is because it is a faith that demands the sacrifice of Hindus. There is nothing remotely similar in Hindu texts that goad the Hindu community to annihilate those who follow another religion. Therefore, for Nupur to clap back at a Muslim panellist denigrating Hinduism by merely quoting the Hadits is necessary. It is necessary because the Islamic community needs to acknowledge, at the very least, that their insult to Hinduism comes from religious hate while the Hindus’ comment on Islam comes from a place of either self-defence or frustration at being subjugated for centuries.

For aeons, we have been told that the onus of maintaining peace, harmony and brotherhood rests on the shoulders of Hindus. And those Hindus, who think merely the fact that Hindus don’t indulge in violence fulfils this responsibility of maintaining brotherhood, are wrong. Hindus are expected to maintain brotherhood by ceding everything they hold sacred and by giving up large parts of their personal liberty. Hindus are not supposed to be offended when their faith is mocked, not supposed to utter a word against Islam, understand that Islam is peaceful and all the violence in the name of Islam does not represent Islam, die with a smile on our faces if we are murdered by Islamists, shut our eyes to facts, give up claims on our places of worship, accept that we are devil worshippers and believe, deep in our heart, that Islamists think of us as brothers and sisters while they hold a sword to our neck.

This cast of mind is so set in the Hindu psyche that any comment on Islam, even innocuous ones, seems “unnecessary” because it would lead to friction, violence and “disruption of harmony” – a harmony that only existed because the victims of Islamist violence and hate, the Hindus, had Stockholm Syndrome and were beaten to believe that accepting that subjugation with a smile on their face was their eternal responsibility.

It is, therefore, not surprising that one of the main criticisms of Nupur Sharma is that her comments were completely “unnecessary”. She, in order to maintain this mythical harmony, must give up her rights, her hurt, her thoughts and essentially, the damn truth because one just never knows what might irk the intolerant minority off.

While Hindus do as Hindus were taught, this trope pushes us down a slope where the slide will ensure that it pulls the entirety of our civilisation down. Sita Ram Goel had said, “To start with, we want to take up what we consider to be its most important contribution, namely, the unravelling of two behaviour patterns – Muslim and National – which collaborated closely for years and precipitated Partition in the final round. The Muslim behaviour pattern was characterized by acrimony, accusations, complaints, demands, denunciations, and street riots. The National behaviour pattern, on the other hand, was characterized by acquiescence, assent, cajolery, concessions, cowardice, self-reproach, and surrender”.

It has been decades since Goel wrote these words and to this day, they hold true. You see, the Muslim community has an insatiable appetite for concessions. You make one, they will demand another. You concede, they will demand 10 more. Soon, you will realise that the Hindu community has given up everything to placate the petulant minority and yet, has been met with nothing but acrimony.

If today, we believe that Nupur Sharma’s statement was “unnecessary” because it ended up provoking the Islamic community, that is a needless concession that the Hindu community is extending to the Islamists. They have the right to be hurt, but not the right to be riotous. The concession accorded makes them believe that their hurt is justified to the extent of giving calls to behead. Now once that concession is extended, their insatiable appetite will raise its ugly head. Once you accept their murderous sentiments, they will claim that your places of worship, your mandirs, are an affront to the Islamic faith. Once you concede that, they will say that you cannot even pray in your home because according to the Islamic community, there is no god but Allah and therefore, the fact that you believe in another god and pray to him is hurting their religious sentiments. The slide would end with them demanding your head on a pike because the very existence of Kafirs offends them.

We must remember that the very basis of the partition was their demand for a ‘land of the pure” untarnished by the existence of Kafirs. When Gandhi allowed the Islamic community to run riots and murder Hindus, it validated their two-nation theory, enough for them to demand the dismemberment of India. When concessions were made to them about the Khilafat movement, terming it a nationalist movement instead of an Islamic one (that held allegiance to the Turkish Caliphate), MK Gandhi emboldened them to set their barbarity in motion and massacre Hindus in accordance with the Ummah they were fighting for.

Hindus today might believe that Nupur Sharma’s comment was “unnecessary”, but if there was a word of caution, it would be this – tomorrow, they will say your very existence, the existence of the dirty Kafir that they are theologically and viscerally meant to hate is an affront to their faith. They won’t only claim this openly, but they will make you guilt-ridden enough to truly believe that your existence is “unnecessary”, impeding their faith, and therefore, you must die with a smile on your face when they come for you.
