Rahul Gandhi has not yet appealed against conviction because despite battery of legal eagles, they have not managed to translate order from Gujarati

Former Wayanad MP and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has not yet appealed against his conviction in the defamation case where he had called everyone with ‘Modi surname’ a thug. Many people in Gujarat who belong to the OBC community have ‘Modi’ surname and this kind of remark by an elected public representative could have harmed individuals, causing them social stigma.

A Magistrata Court in Surat on Thursday convicted Rahul Gandhi, sending him to 2 years imprisonment and a fine. The court, in its order, had said that the court would like to set an example and awarded maximum punishment possible under the section such that people act responsibly. “When someone of an MP level addresses common people, the intensity of crime increases. If he is given lesser punishment, it gives out a wrong message to society that anyone can say anything and get away with it without consequences. Hence, keeping in mind everything, the accused is given two years imprisonment and is asked to pay a fine,” the court had observed.

According to section 8(3) of the Representation of the People Act, any MP or MLA convicted of any offence and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years shall be disqualified from the date of conviction. Which means, as of 23 March, 2023, Rahul Gandhi stood disqualified as an MP. He also could not contest the upcoming 2024 general elections unless his conviction is stayed. Such stay could come from higher court with or without conditions.

Four days have passed since Rahul Gandhi’s conviction. While Congress supporters and leaders have cried themselves hoarse that this Rahul Gandhi’s own doing is ‘death of democracy’ and how ‘Modi is afraid’, Congress is yet to move higher court to appeal against the conviction. As per senior journalist Pallavi Ghosh, sources have informed her that Congress has not yet filed any appeal in court because the court order was in Gujarati and the translation is taking time.

Which is amusing. Because Congress has a battery of legal eagles. From Abhishek Manu Singhvi to Salman Khurshid to P Chidambaram – Congress has top legal brains especially when it comes to the Clown Prince, Rahul Gandhi. Former Congress leader and currently Rajya Sabha MP backed by Samajwadi Party, Kapil Sibal, too, is a practicing lawyer who could easily be roped in.

Regarding translation of court order from Gujarati, Rajya Sabha MP and Congress leader Shaktisinh Gohil himself is a prolific lawyer. Gujarat Congress leader Amee Yajnik who contested 2022 Gujarat state assembly elections against BJP chief ministerial candidate Bhupendra Patel, too, is a lawyer. Surely both of them understand Gujarati enough to help with translation of conviction order from Gujarati to English. Despite having such a strong in-house legal team, Congress has been taking its own sweet time to file for an appeal citing ‘procedural delay’.

All pugilists were rewarded with $100,000 (INR 82.7 lakhs) in prize money for becoming World Champions in their respective categories.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated all winners on Twitter.

Congratulating Nitu, he said, “Congratulations to NituGhanghas on winning the prestigious Gold Medal in the Women’s Boxing World Championships. India is elated by her remarkable feat.”

In a tweet to Saweety, he said, “Exceptional performance by Saweety Boora! Proud of her for winning the Gold Medal in the Women’s Boxing World Championships. Her success will inspire many upcoming athletes.”

Congratulating Nikhat, he said, “Congratulations to Nikhat Zareen for her spectacular victory at the World Boxing Championships and winning a Gold. She is an outstanding champion whose success has made India proud on many occasions.”

In a tweet to Lovlina, he said, “Congratulations Lovlina Borgohai for her stupendous feat at the Boxing World Championships. She showed great skill. India is delighted by her winning the Gold medal.”

In a statement, the President of the Boxing Federation of India, Ajay Singh, said, “We are extremely proud of all pugilists that have scripted history with their gold medals. Securing four gold medals at home in front of such a passionate crowd is a fabulous achievement. The performances of these pugilists will undoubtedly inspire young girls from the country to win medals and elevate Indian boxing to greater heights. Everyone at BFI would like to congratulate Nikhat, Nitu, Lovlina and Saweety on their remarkable accomplishments, and we are looking forward to seeing more of the same from them in the upcoming Asian Games.”

This was India’s second time in history to win four gold medals at the Women’s World Boxing Championships. In 2006, Mary Kom, Sarita Devi, Jenny Lalremliani and Lekha K.C won gold for the country.

Congress leader, who had run away from police, calls PM Modi a ‘coward’, compares court verdict against Rahul Gandhi to MK Gandhi’s assassination

On March 26, Indian Youth Congress (IYC) National President Srinivas BV launched an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the disqualification of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi from Lok Sabha. Srinivas, who had run away from police during a protest in Delhi when Gandhi was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning, conveniently forgot to mention that Rahul Gandhi got disqualified as a Surat court sentenced him to two years in a defamation case.

Calling PM Modi a coward, he said, “Only two cowards were born in India. The first one killed Gandhi, but he could not kill Gandhi’s ideology. One more coward was born in independent India. He disqualified Rahul Gandhi in an attempt to “kill” him. I want to tell these RSS people you keep forgetting you cannot end this Gandhi family and Gandhi’s ideology. The name of Rajiv Gandhi, Indira Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and MK Gandhi will always live in history.”

Notably, Srinivas projected that the Gandhis have some family connection with Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (MK Gandhi), which is untrue. The surname’ Gandhi’ was adopted by Indira Gandhi’s (Rahul Gandhi’s grandmother) husband, Feroze Gandhy.

Interestingly, Srinivas also insinuated that Rahul Gandhi’s conviction by the Court of law was similar to the assassination of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi by Nathuram Godse. One is pressed to wonder if the courts would take suo motu cognizance of this statement given that a Congress leader is comparing a judicial verdict to an assassination.

Srinivas ran away from Police during a protest in Delhi

On June 13, 2022, Srinivas literally ran away to evade police arrest during a ruckus caused by Congress supporters outside the Enforcement Directorate offices in Delhi. As a policeman moved in to greet him after he arrived at the ED office in his SUV, the Congress leader made a run for it to avoid getting detained.

Ironically, earlier in the day, while talking to a reporter, Srinivas was saying how he is never afraid of the police and that the Congress party workers would take out a march in support of Rahul Gandhi, who is under the scanner of ED for financial fraud. However, faced with the first policeman he saw, Srinivas decided to make a run for it.

Rahul Gandhi’s disqualification from Lok Sabha

On March 24, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from Lok Sabha following his conviction in a criminal defamation case by a Surat court. He was disqualified under section 8(3) of the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951, which states that any MP or MLA convicted of any offence and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years shall be disqualified from the date of conviction.

Khalistani plan to attack Indian Embassy in Washington thwarted by US secret service: Read details

On March 25 (local time), pro-Khalistani elements in Washington DC attempted to attack the Indian Embassy, but the American security services thwarted their plan. A group of aggressive and abusive pro-Khalistani elements attacked Indian Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu and Indian senior journalist Lalit K Jha during the same protest. The incident occurred days after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned the United States senior-most diplomat and strongly took up the vandalism at San Francisco Consulate by the pro-Khalistani mob.

The US Secret Service and local police called for reinforcement at the Indian Embassy in DC that included more personnel and three additional police vans to ensure the safety and security of the embassy. Reports suggest the security services quickly intercepted the group of pro-Khalistani elements who had crossed the road. They created a barrier between the embassy and the protesters and directed them to return to the designated area for the protest.

Notably, a similar situation was created by the mob at the consulate in San Francisco, where the mob suddenly rushed past the security barriers into the consulate and tried to bring down the Indian National Flag. The protesters at the Indian Embassy were trying to incite violence. Reportedly, some of the speakers in the mob were indulging others to break windows and glasses of the embassy building.

In a statement issued by the Indian Embassy, the mission condemned the attack on the senior Indian journalist and thanked the law-enforcement agencies for their prompt response.

The Indian mission said, “We have seen disturbing visuals of a senior Indian journalist from the Press Trust of India being abused, threatened & assaulted physically while covering so-called ‘Khalistan protest’ in Washington DC earlier today.

We understand that the journalist was first verbally intimidated, then physically assaulted, and fearing for his personal safety and well-being, he had to call in law enforcement agencies, who responded promptly.

We condemn such a grave and unwarranted attack on a senior journalist. Such activities only underscore the violent and anti-social tendencies of the so-called ‘Khalistani protestors’ and their supporters, who routinely engage in wanton violence and vandalism.

We thank the law enforcement agencies for their prompt response in the matter.”

The protesters included turbaned men of all ages who raised pro-Khalistan slogans. They came in from different parts of the DC-Maryland-Virginia (DMV) area. Anti-India speeches were made in English and Punjabi, targeting Punjab Police over alleged human rights violations. The protest was in response to the crackdown on pro-Khalistani separatist leader Amritpal Singh that started on March 18 by the Punjab Police. Singh is still on the run.

Ro Khanna backtracks after falsely claiming his grandfather had resigned opposing Indira Gandhi’s emergency while pontificating on democracy

On 26th March 2023, US House Representative Ro Khanna backtracked his earlier claims by saying that his grandfather did not resign opposing the emergency but opted not to contest an election after that. However, he said that his grandfather Amarnath Vidyalankar had written two letters to Indira Gandhi to register his disagreement with the emergency she imposed. Earlier, Ro Khanna had claimed that his grandfather – then MP – had resigned opposing the emergency.

How did the row start?

On Friday (March 24), US House Representative Ro Khanna stirred the hornet’s nest by making unsolicited remarks about the internal political affairs of India after Congress scion Rahul Gandhi was disqualified from Lok Sabha following his conviction in a criminal defamation case. In a tweet (archive), he claimed, “The expulsion of Rahul Gandhi from parliament is a deep betrayal of Gandhian philosophy and India’s deepest values.” The US politician further added, “This is not what my grandfather sacrificed years in jail for. Narendra Modi, you have the power to reverse this decision for the sake of Indian democracy.”

In a thread dissecting the unsolicited sermons of the US politician on Gandhian philosophy democracy, etc., ‘The Pamphlet’ wrote, “Though it seems as If Ro has forgotten that Amarnath Vidyalankar (his grandfather), an INC loyalist, was part of Indira Gandhi’s govt during the harsh period of emergency in India. He did not oppose the brutal atrocities on the Indian masses during the Emergency.”

Quoting this tweet, Ro Khanna tweeted, “It’s sad to see people maligning my grandfather who worked for Lala Lajpat Rai, was jailed in 31-32 and 41-45, and wrote two letters to Indira Gandhi opposing the emergency, leaving parliament right after. Attack me. Don’t attack India’s freedom fighters. And facts matter.”

In this tweet, he apparently claimed that his grandfather not only opposed the emergency but also quit the membership of parliament immediately.

Ro Khanna gets a lesson to learn from an Indian news portal

‘The Pamphlet’ came up with a researched reply in which it said, “Dear Ro Khanna, while we appreciate your reply, kindly note that the claimed fact of your grandfather resigning in protest of emergency is NOT registered anywhere. The website of Loksabha shows your grandfather’s name as one representing Chandigarh. Also, the Punjab Assembly compendium of profiles of MLAs is silent about his resignation. We do value and appreciate the struggle of all the freedom fighters, including your grandfather but this particular claim of ours is with respect to him continuing as MP while civil liberties were crushed during the emergency. His freedom fighter status doesn’t absolve him of his support of a regime that suspended civil liberties in India.”

‘The pamphlet’ added, “Your grandfather served on various parliamentary committees during 5th Loksabha and that too is well documented. We didn’t include any unverified claim despite coming across somewhere that your grandfather didn’t fight elections in 1977 so as to devote more time to his family following the death of his eldest son in an accident. At no point ever we discredited or disrespected your grandfather & our report was in response to your bizarre linking of a legal case decision to democratic freedom etc. Lastly, if you have any proof of your grandfather’s resignation, please send it directly to Lok Sabha Secretariat so that they may record it. Until then, our claim that your grandfather served in 5th Loksabha stands.”

‘The pamphlet’ also included all the relevant proofs supporting their claims in the tweet. In the next tweet ‘the Pamphlet’ wrote, “We do understand that you are a law graduate from Yale and hence must be aware of the basic difference between EXPULSION & DISQUALIFICATION. It should not be difficult for you to understand that Rahul Gandhi’s is a disqualification and not an expulsion as alleged by you. Also, his conviction under the law of the country and as confirmed by the Supreme Court is the causative event that triggered his disqualification- a fact that you completely ignored. Also, he is not the first lawmaker to have been disqualified under the said provisions and certainly won’t be the last until the law stays in its present shape and form.”

‘The Pamphlet’ added, “We are also sure that you are aware of the fact that it was Rahul Gandhi only who protested the Congress government’s move to amend the law in 2013. Had he allowed his own Congress Government to amend it then, he would not have suffered his disqualification. On your claim of us maligning your grandfather, please note that it was you who brought your grandfather into the discussion, following Rahul’s disqualification arising out of his conviction; and even cited his jail terms during the Indian freedom struggle. Following your claims, it becomes perfectly valid for us to remind you of the fact that your grandfather continued to remain a lawmaker during the most repressive regimes India ever saw.”

Ro Khanna takes a U-turn

After getting this detailed lesson from ‘The Pamphlet’, Ro Khanna stepped back. He said in a replying tweet that his grandfather did not resign during the emergency. He wrote, “He did not resign, but he did not seek re-election in 1977 for both family reasons and opposition to the emergency. He wrote two letters to Indira Gandhi opposing the emergency which should be part of the archives. The emergency obviously was a stain on Indian democracy.”

Ro Khanna’s maternal grandfather Amarnath Vidyalankar was a freedom fighter and a member of the Congress party. During the indepence movement, he largely worked under Lala Rajpat Rai, and a life member of the Servants of the People Society founded by Rai. During this time, he went to jail three times, in 1931–32, 1941–42 and 1942-1945.

He was a member of the First Lok Sabha (1952–1956) from Jalandhar, Third Lok Sabha (1962–1967) from Hoshiarpur and Fifth Lok Sabha (1971–1977) from Chandigarh. From 1957 to 1962, he was the minister of Education, Labor and Languages in the Government of Punjab. During his third term as MP, he chaired three parliamentary committees appointed by the government: committees to study and improve the Information and Broadcasting Department and the Department of Supply and Disposal and a committee to study the national library in Calcutta. Apart from these, he was a member of the Public Accounts Committee, the Estimates Committee and the Committee on Public Undertakings.

He decided not to contest the 1977 elections due to the death of his eldest son in a plane crash, and never returned to electoral politics, as he needed to take case of his family and the business. But he remained a member of the Congress (I) party till his death in 1985.

It is notable that although he is of Indian origin by lineage, Ro Khanna was born in the USA. Ro Khanna’s parents, father Vijay Khanna and mother Jyotsna Khanna had immigrated to USA, and Ro was born in 1976 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

He has been actively involved in US politics as a Democratic Party leader since 2016. As such, his interference in India’s internal affairs without fully understanding the political context has drawn the ire of Indians.

This is not the first time Ro Khanna has made unsolicited comments on internal affairs in India, he has done it earlier also. A brief account of his unnecessary adventures can be read here. Interestingly, he is a member of the Congressional Pakistan Caucass, apart from being a member of the India Caucass.

Hindu bike rally attacked in Jaipur district in Rajasthan, video shows youths in skullcaps pelting stones in presence of police

A Muslim mob attacked a rally by Hindus on the occasion of Hindu New year at Jamvaramgarh in Jaipur in Rajasthan, and pelted stones at the rally. Even though police were deployed for the security of the rally, they could not do anything, according to reports. Later the mob was controlled when additional forces arrived.

The incident happened at Tala village of Raisar area of Jamvaramgarh, when a bike rally by Hindus came under the attack of a mob of people wearing skullcaps. The bike rally on the occasion of the Hindu New Year started at around 10.15 am from Khel Maidan Chandwaji. According to the planned route of the rally, it was to go through Chandwaji, Pilwa, Chandawas, Tala village, Rajpura, Bachyawas, Shyampura, Tala Johra, Dantala Gujran, Dantala Meena, Bilod and Toda, before ending at Todeshwar Mahadev Temple.

This rally is called Hindu Ranbheri Rally and it is taken out every year on the occasion of Hindu New Year.

When the rally reached the Tala Johra under Raiser police station at around 3 pm, a mob attacked it and pelted stones on the rally. However, the rally went ahead despite the attack. But some people were left behind, and they had to fled as the mob pelted stones at them. A video of the same has surfaced, which show that most people in the mob were wearing skullcaps.

BJP MP Rajyavardhan Rathore posted the video on Twitter, saying that a Hindu rally was attacked in Jaipur’s Jamvaramgarh today. He blamed the Congress government in Rajasthan for rising Islamist mentalities in the state.

“PFI terrorist mentality has flourished under Congress rule. This government also shows softness on those who pelt stones and violence on the events of Hindu community. These incidents are the result of this appeasement,” he said. Rathore added that the administration should act promptly against such madrassas and miscreants.

In the video, it can be seen that the miscreants are pelting stones despite the presence of policemen. Some minor boys are also seen pelting stones.

Around 50 policemen were deployed for the security of the rally comprising around 1000 two-wheelers. The cops were standing at different locations along the rally route.

Police have started action after the incident, and 12 persons have been detained so far. In a tweet, Jaipur Rural Police said that they are trying to identify more people from the videos. “Strict action will be taken against those who disturb religious harmony and spread rumours,” they added.

An eyewitness who was part of the rally said that when the cops and the people in the rally tried to stop the attackers from stone pelting, they became furious. He added that despite the attack, the participants in the rally didn’t react and moved ahead peacefully.

Odour from other people’s sweat can treat social anxiety: Research

0

Researchers from Europe have demonstrated that inhaling odours that are derived from other people’s perspiration can be utilised to enhance the treatment of various mental health issues.

In a pilot investigation, the researchers were able to demonstrate that patients who underwent mindfulness meditation while exposed to human “chemo-signals,” or what we generally refer to as body odour, derived from volunteer volunteers’ underarm sweat, experienced less social anxiety.

Presenting the results of a pilot study at the European Congress of Psychiatry in Paris, lead researcher Ms Elisa Vigna, of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm said: “Our state of mind causes us to produce molecules (or chemo-signals) in sweat which communicate our emotional state and produce corresponding responses in the receivers. The results of our preliminary study show that combining these chemo-signals with mindfulness therapy seem to produce better results in treating social anxiety than can be achieved by mindfulness therapy alone”.

Social anxiety is a common mental health condition where people worry excessively about participating in social situations. This can affect interactions, for example within the workplace or relationships, but also in everyday situations such as shopping or holidays. This may make it difficult to lead a normal life without excessive worrying about contact with others.

The study involved collecting sweat from volunteers, and then exposing patients to chemo-signals extracted from these sweat samples, while they were being treated for social anxiety. The sweat samples were collected from volunteers who were watching short clips from movies: these films had been chosen to elicit particular emotional states such as fear or happiness; this was to see if the specific emotions experienced while perspiring had differing effects on the treatment.

The clips from fearful movies included content from horror films such as The Grudge. The ‘happy’ clips included material from Mr Bean’s Holiday, Sister Act, and others.

Once the sweat had been collected, researchers recruited 48 women (aged between 15 and 35), all of whom suffered from social anxiety, and divided them into 3 groups each of 16 people. Over a period of 2 days, they all underwent mindfulness therapy for social anxiety. At the same time, each group was exposed to a different odour, obtained from the sweat samples of people who had seen different types of video clips, plus a control group, which was exposed to clean air.

Elisa Vigna said, “We found that the women in the group exposed to sweat from people who had been watching funny or fearful movies, responded better to mindfulness therapy than those who hadn’t been exposed. We were a little surprised to find that the emotional state of the person producing the sweat didn’t differ in treatment outcomes – sweat produced while someone was happy had the same effect as someone who had been scared by a movie clip. So there may be something about human chemo-signals in sweat generally which affects the response to treatment.”

“It may be that simply being exposed to the presence of someone else has this effect, but we need to confirm this. In fact, that is what we are testing now in a follow-up study with a similar design, but where we are also including sweat from individuals watching emotionally neutral documentaries. This should allow us to tease out whether any potential therapy benefits stem from the unconscious perception of specific emotional signals, or whether it is simply to do with human presence, irrespective of emotion”, she added.

Ms Vigna continued, “We found that individuals who undertook one treatment session of mindfulness therapy together with being exposed to human body odours showed about 39% reductionsee note 3 in anxiety scores). For comparison, in the group receiving only mindfulness (i.e., the control group) we saw a 17% reduction in anxiety scores after one treatment session.

We are hopeful that this may lead to a new way of helping people with Social Anxiety Disorder, for example increasing the effectiveness of standalone e-health interventions (such as meditation apps) or provide an additional opportunity for those who don’t respond to current treatment. However, we caution that this is a proof-of-concept study, which is why we are now embarking on a bigger study to confirm the findings”.

Karnataka: Amit Shah says no provision in Constitution to provide reservation on religious basis, calls out Congress for promoting polarisation

Following the revocation of the 4% OBC reservation for Muslims in Karnataka, Union Home Minister Amit Shah attacked the Congress, on Sunday, and asserted that the Constitution does not contain any provision allowing for religion-based reservations.

In a cabinet meeting held on Friday, the Karnataka government scrapped the four percent OBC reservation for Muslims and distributed it among Lingayats and Vokkaligas communities. It also decided to move OBC Muslims to the 10 per cent Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category.

While addressing a public meeting in poll-bound Karnataka, Amit Shah said, “Reservations provided to the minority was not as per Constitution. There is no provision in the Constitution to provide reservation on the basis of religion. Congress Government due to its polarisation politics provided reservation to the minority. Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) scrapped that reservation and provided reservations to Vokkaliga and Lingayat communities.”

Amit Shah also criticised the politics of Congress and remarked that out of the avarice for the vote bank, the party never honoured the martyrs of independence. “If Sardar Patel had not been there, Hyderabad would have never attained independence. Bidar too would not have attained independence,” he noted.

The Home Minister also referred to the victims in Gorata village who were slaughtered by the brutal Nizam’s army for displaying a Tricolor. “In this Gorata village, hundreds of people were killed by the army of a cruel Nizam for hoisting just a 2.5-ft tall Tricolour. Today, I proudly say that on the same land, we have hoisted a 103-ft tall Tricolour that can’t be hidden from anyone.” Amit Shah laid the foundation of the memorial eight years ago.

In honour of the sacrifices made by the martyrs, he unveiled a 20-foot-tall statue of Sardar Patel and ‘Gorata Shaheed Smarak.’ The statue, he observed, is a representation of the crucial role that the country’s first Home Minister played.

“On the same land, a memorial of those immortal martyrs has been erected. This 20-ft tall statue of Sardar Patel is a symbol of the significant role played by our first Home Minister in ousting the Nizam from Hyderabad. That is why this area, this Bidar could become a part of India,” he mentioned.

Gorata Massacre

The fiercest battle against Hyderabad Nizam’s forces took place in the small town of Gorata in the district of Bidar in Karnataka in May 1948. Although hoisting the tricolour became lawful throughout the Indian subcontinent on August 15, 1947, it remained offensive in some areas that were a part of the Princely State of Hyderabad. On September 17, 1948, the Hyderabad state was finally freed from Nizam’s control.

This village witnessed a slaughter by Nizam’s army, the Razakars, in May 1948, three months before the liberation. It all started when a few people hoisted the tricolour at Hannalli and neighbouring Halagorta villages in the Bidar district.

The calendar for assembly elections in the southern state has not yet been released by the Election Commission. However, the polls are slated before May when the tenure of the current assembly ends.

‘Liberals’ attack Mumbai Press club for supporting journalist humiliated by Rahul Gandhi

A day after Mumbai Press Club condemned Rahul Gandhi for publicly humiliating a journalist during a press conference after his disqualification from Lok Sabha, left-liberals have launched an attack on the press club. After Rahul Gandhi called CNN-News18 journalist Ravi Sisodia a BJP agent for asking him a question about his comments that led to his conviction and the subsequent disqualification, Mumbai Press Club had issued a statement, criticising Congress scion Rahul Gandhi.

However, this didn’t go well with left-liberals, and they were enraged that the press club demanded an apology from the prince. The cabal of liberals, who have been pretending to uphold press freedom in India, attacked the Mumbai Press club instead for having the audacity to seek an apology from their political master.

Congress loyalist Sanjukta Bose wrote, “Rich of you guys to outrage over what Rahul Gandhi said and ask many questions to Congress when we have a PM that hasn’t held press con in 9 years. Even in pressers by other BJP leaders journalists not allowed to questions freely. They just shout and journos quietly take notes.”

One Vijaya Moorthy went on an unhinged rant and tweeted, “Ouch!! Bothered about journalists being rebuked. All reaction and comment seekers, that’s all. Keep taking bytes without asking real questions and wanting to hear real answers! Sit down please. #FreeSpeech of others is as important as your right to pose questions. Relearn first.”

Actress Richa Chaddha tweeted a Gif of a ‘snail’ in response to the statement released by the Mumbai Press Club. “Such different standards,” she wrote.

Film writer and ex-journalist, Arpita Chatterjee, resorted to whataboutery in the hopes of shielding Rahul Gandhi from public criticism.

“I’m very curious to know what questions the so called press of this country has asked about Adani, PM Cares, how COVID was handled, about what’s going on in Kashmir etc etc. Wearing a press badge doesn’t make you press,” she wrote.

Abusive troll Swati Chaturvedi was also miffed at the conduct of the press body. She tweeted, “Also Mumbai Press Club, you have no opinion on compromised & pliable journalists?”

“Did you deplore Narendra Modi calling the free press “bazaru”, or his minister calling journalists “presstitutes”? “Paid media” is another honorific the Modi gov has given,” she said.

The Background of the Controversy

On March 25 morning, Rahul Gandhi lost his cool during a press conference at the Congress office. The press conference had been largely one-sided, with Rahul Gandhi accusing the government of silencing him over the Adani issue.

When journalist Ravi Sisodia of CNN-News18 asked questions concerning his defamation conviction, the Congress scion called him a BJP stooge.

Aap itne directly BJP ke liye kyun kaam kar rahe ho, thoda discretion se karo yaar. Thoda ghoom ghaam kar poocho. (How is it that you are so openly working from BJP, do it with some discretion. Don’t pose such direct questions, be diplomatic)”, Rahul Gandhi said.

“If you want to work for the BJP, bring a BJP symbol and wear it on your chest,” Rahul lambasted. “Don’t pretend to be a pressman…Kyun hawa nikal gayi?” he further mocked the journalist.

Following this, Mumbai Press Club issued a statement on Saturday (March 25) evening, criticising Congress scion Rahul Gandhi for publicly humiliating a journalist. The press body noted, “The job of a journalist is to ask questions, and it is the duty of political leaders who call press conferences and engage with journalists to answer these questions with dignity and decorum.”

“It is unfortunate that as the leader of one of the oldest political parties of the country, Shri Gandhi faded to respect the dignity of the Fourth Estate…It is a matter of concern that political parties of all hues have been attempting to browbeat journalists using derogatory language and threats as a response to news reporting they find unpalatable,” it added.

The Mumbai Press Club also sought an apology from Rahul Gandhi to Ravi Sisodia. “In this context, it will be appropriate for Shri Rahul Gandhi to make amends and offer an apology to the journalist concerned,” the statement said.

VHP leader in Indore gets ‘Sar Tan Se Juda’ threats, receives the threatening note in a green envelope

A Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) member named Santosh Sharma received a beheading threat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, through a letter left on his car’s wiper in a green envelope. The letter advised him to stop working against the Muslim community. The police have filed a case and are searching for the perpetrator. The incident occurred on 23 March 2023. Santosh Sharma is the Regional Organiser of VHP.

The incident took place in Indore’s Musakhedi area, where Santosh Sharma, a VHP leader living in Gokul Residency, reported to the police about receiving death threats from an unidentified accused on March 24. While out for purchasing fruits with his friend Sharad and driver Yogesh, Sharma parked his Innova car at a restaurant. Upon returning to the car, he found a green envelope placed on the wiper of the car.

Upon opening the green envelope, Santosh Sharma discovered a threatening message, calling him a kafir and warning him to cease working against Islamic extremism. The letter also included a beheading threat if he refused to comply. Santosh Sharma believes that this was an attempt to intimidate him. He filed a complaint with Tilak Nagar police station, and the authorities initiated an investigation to apprehend the culprit.

Indore has seen multiple incidents of death threats being directed toward Hindutva leaders. Previously, Tannu Sharma, a Bajrang Dal leader, as well as lawyer Anil Naidu and advocate Manish Gadkar, had received such threats. Additionally, Manish Gadkar has claimed that his office was attacked by three assailants, including someone named Junaid, and some of the individuals responsible for threatening him have been arrested by the police.
