Lessons for India from SV Bank collapse: West will disregard its own advice to ‘unwashed masses’ and ‘nationalism’ is ok, as long as you get the ‘nation’ right

If we do not learn from the mistakes of others, we are doomed to learn from our own. That is one saying that comes to mind when I read about the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. But a more important Tamil adage comes to mind too. Loosely translated, it says, “When hunger strikes, all holy principles are cast aside”.

We Indian are subject to regular lectures on the virtues of the free market, open access, etc. But the ancient Tamils got it right. When they are hungry – which in the case of rich Silicon Valley VCs and Hedge fund operators means no caviar or Grand Cru with their expensive steaks, then all principles are thrown aside.

Background

Silicon Valley Bank or SVB is a special kind of bank that acts as bankers to startups and VC firms. Like most swashbuckling cowboy capitalists and of course, leftist NGO frauds, it was disdainful of regulators and regulations. In fact, it spent big money lobbying to have regulations relaxed, claiming strong risk management practices. Not to be outdone, Fortune magazine ranked it among “America’s best banks” for 5 years straight! Just keep that in mind when you read about democracy, press freedom, happiness indexes etc. If they can’t even understand hard figures, good luck to understanding happiness!

Now it has collapsed thanks to a bank run fueled by disclosed losses in government securities it was holding. Strangely it’s loan books appear to be ok.

SVB’s market cap, already under pressure this year, went from $15b to practically zero because FDIC (which insures bank deposits up to a limit) seized it! It was well over $40b not too long back. Now there are dire warnings of “systemic risks” and broader economic contagion and massive job losses in startups whose money is tied up with this bank. There are even rumours that His Royal Wokeness, Prince Harry and Megan have millions of their hard-earned money kept there.

Karma, as they say, is a female of canine species. Little wonder Adani’s CFO is laughing his backside off.

The Biden “boom” economy predicted by eminent economists like Krugman is making a lot of noise of the wrong sort indeed! For the record, this is the second-biggest bank collapse in the history of the USA! But don’t worry too much. Krugman will likely change the definition of bank collapse and wokes will lock the Wiki page to prevent “vandalism” so that Biden gets away scot-free. You may even see Op-eds in NYT arguing bank collapses are good for the economy and coloured people. Or just ask Ranaa or Dhume to write more anti-Modi articles until the storm passes over.

A full-fledged salvage operation is on. No, I am not talking about the bank – very little has been said on that from powers that matter. I am talking about salvaging Biden’s reputation or whatever remains of it. Already we see leftists blaming Trump as if Biden had no time to reverse any of Trump’s decisions. Of course, more important matters like changing the paint job on Air Force One took priority. Biden who can make our Pappu look like a towering intellectual giant is probably beyond caring. He is secure in the knowledge that Kamala and other options on the table are so much worse, no one will dream of asking him to make way. Cos at that point Americans would be ready to vote for Bannon or Kayleigh McEnaney or anyone endorsed by Breitbart.

In yet another indication of how close politicians, their advisors, the Treasury and other arms of the US government are with the people they are supposed to regulate, SVB appointed an ex-Obama Treasury official to its board. This revolving door has been a fixture of American politics for decades now.

My problems are yours

Let me state at the outset that SVB may yet survive this, perhaps sold to another bank. Based on opinions posted by knowledgeable folks, who may be wrong of course, its loans are ok, it’s just declined in the value of their investments due to interest rate changes. Those are US government securities so capital is safe if only held to maturity. Many other banks are in the same position as the problem is common. But that’s not the point of this piece. It’s the conduct of various players and their hypocrisy.

In fact, after I drafted this article, late on Sunday night Fed announced a support program that essentially loans out cash against these securities at par value. In other words, postponing the reckoning. Hoping perhaps that in a year’s time prices will recover or banks will find other ways to plug the gap without panicking. If Modi does something like this, he will be attacked by all free-market puritans of course. This could also mean Fed will be loath to increase rates because that will mean more trouble in years’ time. This is good for the elites who have been, for self-serving reasons, pushing the Feds to relax its interest rate stance for a while now, even before the SVB crisis.

Stocks, banks or companies collapsing is not new. It can happen anywhere and anytime. But the reaction of the free-market ayatollahs is the most bizarre. Or should I say predictable? True to the Tamil adage, they have forgotten all about their principles and are now out with a begging bowl asking for a bailout. Even Shahbaz Sharif had to take his skullcap off in respect! The list of blue-tick warriors running to the White House crying “mummmmmeeeee” is a long one indeed. As long as Bill Ackman’s Tweet justifying the rescue. Good Elon increased the limit to 4,000 characters. Maybe Sharif should consider paying the $8 and make full use!

Of course, some have genuine concerns and others are too clever to directly say, line my pockets. Instead, they are claiming to talk on behalf of US “innovation” and the jobs of thousands of startup employees, who they will not hesitate 5 seconds to fire over a Zoom call. Or destroy with their market moves. SVB’s CEO Becker sold $3.6m worth of stock barely days before the collapse. Guess he didn’t see it coming. Take your pick, he’s a lousy CEO or a damn good stock operator. Pelosi can hire him.

In other words, their arguments, as Prof Abishek Banerji pointed out, are “nationalistic”. But you see, nationalism is no sin if the nation is right. Just as patriotism is no sin if it is towards ideological fatherland for our Stalinist leftists. If not our left and wokes as well as their US donors hate both words and abuse anyone in India that talks that.

But make no mistake about it – the real goal of many of the folks that ask for a taxpayer-funded bailout is to ensure they can go around making more mistakes and the Fed will save them. It’s also aimed at reversing Fed’s rate hikes which were to safely deflate the asset bubble, soft land the economy and keep inflation in check. Once that policy is abandoned, stocks and valuations will soar, woke elite can buy new super yachts. And send more money to Ranaas of the third world. But the bills with hefty interest will come later – to be paid by the subaltern they cry so much for.

SVB also went months without any risk management head. But then it had Jay Esrapah as risk management head for the UK, who, to quote a media report, spent a lot of time on LGBTQ+ initiatives. Guess they had their priorities right! You can bet that they got their pronouns right. They also regularly spouted the sort of empty verbiage that woke elite loves to hear – climate change, diversity etc.

Interestingly, we have not had much wisdom on this topic from the ever-prescient army of mostly NRI geniuses we are blessed with – Rajan, Dhume, Kaushik Basu, Amartya Sen, Andy Mukerji or even Mihir Sharmas. How come Rajan, an expert on doomsday predictions missed this? What about Basu’s taxi driver? Guess they are too busy speaking the truth to power in Gorakhpur. Nor does it appear that short sellers like Ackman or Hindenburg (a research “institution” according to Ravish Pandeyji) managed to get this trade right.

Key takeaway

As my first sentence itself said, if we don’t learn from others, we learn from our own – mistakes. So what’s in it for us?

  1. When you hear of lofty principles, free market ten commandments that should not be violated etc., from WASP elites or their brown coolies, don’t even waste one minute believing. They are just as valuable as used toilet paper.
  2. It is perfectly OK for Europeans or Americans to disregard their own advice to the 3rd world if it suits their interests – be it coal in Germany, Russian gas for Europe, nuclear power for France, suppressing farmer protests with guns and police in Canada and Brussels or hands-off-the-market holy grails in the USA.
  3. It is perfectly acceptable to be nationalistic – just get your nation right! Obviously India is wrong place to be.
  4. Remember that the ones arguing for American taxpayer to bailout are at the very least trying to or claiming to, help their own country. God bless them.
  5. What you should look out for are the corrupt Indian frauds that lick up that waste and try to regurgitate it for your consumption. Reserve your contempt for them.
  6. We must also make up principles along the way as long as our goals are clear. Is hamaam mein sab nangey hain ji. As Groucho Marx once said, “those are my principles, if you don’t like them, well, I have others”. That’s one Marx I take very seriously.
  7. Our parliamentarians should offer Americans and EU regular sage advise on how to run their countries.
  8. If Rihanna can weigh in on our farm policy, Biden should consult Bollywood item numbers before deciding US banking policy. What does Rakhiji think about this whole saga? She must tweet regularly on US affairs. She’s much more intelligent than Mia.

Now that I have dispensed a lot of useful advise, let me offer a few useless ones.

  1. Bank runs are like what Ghalib said about love – “lagaaye na lage aur bujaye na bane”. They are not easy to start but once starts, hard to control. Rumors that have no basis in facts take over. In a bizarre development, an Indian cooperative Bank SVC, which has nothing to do with SVB other than alphabetical closeness, had to issue official clarification.
  2. While it may appear unlikely in India, government of the day must watch out for earliest signs – and put it out. Ruthlessly. Just don’t bother about lofty ideals.
  3. We do have deposit insurance along the lines of the US – but the limits are low (Rs. 5 lakhs) and more importantly, not many are aware of this. Good times are the right times to fix these issues. The limit must be well beyond middle-class deposit averages. Obviously we are not bothered about protecting the ultra-rich.
  4. Honest communication and risk management is the essence. Beef up the entire ecosystem – regulators, accountants and audit, transparency norms etc.
  5. Government must spend efforts on educating ordinary depositors, investors and the general public. While large failures may be rare, we do have smaller rural banks, finance firms and other frauds that collapse from time to time.  Obviously not everyone can learn to read balance sheets but at the very least shady practices and too-good-to-be-true offers must be made known to all. So people are on guard.

Meanwhile, just take screenshots of relevant tweets and posts from our capitalist warriors. They will come in handy when they start dishing out unsolicited advice to us unwashed Indians.

‘Deliberate disinformation’: Govt of India denies Reuters’ report claiming new ‘security testing for smartphones’ and ‘crackdown on pre-installed apps’

0

On March 15, Union Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, Skill Development, Electronics & Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar debunked a Reuters report that suggested the Government of India was planning new security testing for smartphones. In a tweet quoting Reuters, Chandrasekhar said, “This story is plain wrong – there is no “security testing” or “crackdown” as story suggests.”

He added, “Story is based on lack of understanding perhaps & unfettered creative imagination that is based an ongoing consultation process between Ministry & Industry on mobile security guidelines of BIS Standard IS17737 (Part-3) 2021. Ministry of Information and Technology, Government of India, is 100% committed to Ease of doing Business n is totally focussed on growing Electronics Mfg to touch USD 300Bln by 2026.”

Calling it deliberate disinformation, Senior Advisor, Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, Government of India, Kanchan Gupta, said, “This is deliberate disinformation by Reuters intended to negatively impact the mobile manufacturing sector in India. Ongoing consultation on mobile security guidelines of BIS Standard IS17737 (Part-3) 2021 has been misrepresented.”

In its exclusive report, Reuters claimed that India was planning to force smartphone makers to allow users to remove pre-installed apps. Furthermore, it claimed that the government was planning to mandate screening of major operating system updates under the new proposed security rules. Reuters cited two unnamed government officials in its report stating that the update’s information was yet to be public. The officer allegedly told Reuters, “Pre-installed apps can be a weak security point, and we want to ensure no foreign nations, including China, are exploiting it. It’s a matter of national security.”

Reuters claimed that the new move will delay the launch of new smartphones in India, and will cause losses in business from pre-installed apps for major players in the market like Samsung and Xiaomi.

Notably, Chinese manufacturers have almost half the smartphone market share in India. Several countries have imposed restrictions on companies like Huawei, Hikvision and others as it was suggested these companies were using their technology to spy on the nations. China, however, denied the allegations. It is notable that most foreign manufacturers, including the Chinese ones, make their phones in India for the Indian market, as most of them have established large manufacturing facilities in the country taking benefit of the Indian government’s incentive schemes.

There are several pre-installed apps on smartphones that users cannot delete, such as the GetApps app store by Xiaomi, Samsung Pay Mini, Safari browser by Apple and more. Reuters claimed in its report that it accessed a confidential document of the Government of India that stated, “Majority of smartphones used in India are having pre-installed Apps/Bloatware which poses serious privacy/information security issue(s)”. The agency further claimed Xiaomi, Samsung, Apple, and Vivo met government officials in a closed-door meeting. The govt gave them one year to comply once “new rules come into effect”, the agency stated.

Uttarakhand: 15 Congress MLAs suspended from assembly for ‘unruly behaviour’

0

In a highly chaotic scene in the Uttarakhand Assembly, 15 Congress MLAs were suspended for a day for creating a ruckus during the proceedings of the House.

The suspension came after the Opposition party created an uproar, demanding a discussion under Rule 310 on the issue of unemployment and the police lathi-charge on students who were protesting in Dehradun against recruitment scam on February 9, and cases of examination paper leak in the state. Speaker Khanduri allowed a hearing on the matter under Rule 58 and called for Question Hour.

Criticising the suspended MLAs for their “unruly behaviour”, BJP State chief Mahendra Bhatt said that conduct like this in the House was unacceptable under any circumstances. He asserted that the House is convened to discuss issues of public importance, but the Congress which is going through “frustration and disappointment”, is “trying to run away” from playing the role of a being a responsible opposition

The chaos began as soon as the proceedings of the Assembly started with the Congress members creating a ruckus and refusing to allow the Speaker to conduct the House. The Opposition party members raised slogans against the government.

Despite repeated requests by the Speaker to maintain order, the Congress MLAs continued with their protest, leading to the Speaker suspending 15 of them for the day.

Speaking to the press on the issue House Speaker Ritu Khanduri Bhushan said “If members had any kind of problem regarding the decision, it could be resolved by communication. Climbing the secretary’s table and trying to come close to the Chair, it’s a serious and unacceptable issue. This kind of unruly behaviour is not at all correct”

She also pointed out to the fact that some Congress MLAs namely, Adesh Chauhan, Piran Kaliyar, and Furqan Ahmad, climbed Vidhan Sabha secretary Hem Pant’s table during the ruckus.

Meanwhile, the ruling party defended its actions, stating that the Congress members were disrupting the proceedings of the House and not allowing the Speaker to conduct the proceedings smoothly. The government also clarified that it was taking all necessary steps to keep the functioning of the house smooth so that a conducive environment for productive discussions can be created in the legislature.

The Congress was organising protests inside and outside the Vidhan Sabha on the inaugural day of the budget session over issues that the alleged recruitment scams and was asking for a CBI investigation into them. They were also alleging corruption in the functioning of the Government. Unemployment, the lathi-charge on protesting youth on February 9 in Dehradun, rising prices, the Pauri Garhwal receptionist murder case, deteriorating law and order, and neglect of land subsidence hit Joshimath and Gairsan were other issues that the Opposition wanted to discuss.

State Congress president Karan Mahara said, “This is indicative of BJP’s dictatorial character, which will not be tolerated by any party that believes in democracy”.

MLA from Khatima and Deputy Leader of Opposition Bhuwan Chandra Kapri said, “The Pushkar Singh-led state government is neglecting farmers by not increasing the sugarcane MSP. Even today the Uttarakhand government follows the Uttar Pradesh government’s decision. If the government in the neighbouring state increases sugarcane MSP, our government then says they will think about it. No pending payments of sugarcane farmers have been cleared. It’s an anti-farmer government.”

State Congress spokesperson Garima Mehra Dasauni said, “It’s a murder of the Constitution. The elected representatives are being barred from raising their voice in the House.”

It must be noted that the Budget Session is going on in the Uttarakhand Assembly and many important legislations have been tabled for discussion, such ruckus and uproar consume the time and energy of the members of the house and stop the members from having a proper discussion on the tabled bills.

The suspension of the Congress MLAs for a day has now raised concerns over the functioning of the Uttarakhand Assembly and the possibility of further disruptions in the coming days. With both the ruling and the Opposition parties refusing to back down, it remains to be seen how the situation will unfold in the coming days.

Pakistan: Violent clashes erupt between Imran Khan supporters and police over attempts to arrest him, the former PM alleges cops trying to kill him

Amidst political turbulence, new turmoil brewed in Pakistan as the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) government continued with its attempts to arrest former prime minister Imran Khan Niazi. A tense situation prevailed in Lahore as Pakistan’s police and supporters of Imran Khan continued to clash since Tuesday, outside the former cricketer’s house in Lahore.

Former PM Imran Khan alleged that the cops were directly firing at civilians like attacking enemies on the battlefield.

Sharing a video of Pakistani Rangers opening fire on supporters of Imran Khan, he wrote, “Rangers firing straight into unarmed citizens at Zaman Park as if they are attacking an enemy force on the battlefield.”

In another tweet, Khan said that since yesterday afternoon, his house is under heavy attack. He said that the ‘Rangers’ latest incursion pits the country’s largest political party against the military.’ Imran Khan said that this is what the enemies of Pakistan want, and no lessons have been learnt from ‘the tragedy of East Pakistan’.

He was seen sitting in front of a table filled with tear gas shells and bullet cartridges. Imran Khan further alleged that the claim of an attempt to arrest him was a shame, and the real intention was to kidnap and kill. He said that after using tear gas and water cannons, the cops started to resort to direct firing. He added that he signed a surety bond last evening, but the DIG refused to even entertain it. “There is no doubt of their mala fide intent,” he wrote.

In the early hours of Wednesday, more contingents were called to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman’s Zaman Park residence, where a stand-off between party supporters and law enforcers including Rangers, has been going on for his arrest in the Toshakhana case. A heavy deployment of police surrounded his property, amid heavy shelling by the security personnel.

Police used tear gas and water cannon to disperse the large crowd of Imran Khan’s supporters who had assembled in front of his home. The police are also blocking all roads leading to his residence. A large number of party workers are present outside the 70-year-old leader’s residence to resist the police action.

His supporters and party members came out in huge numbers to prevent his arrest, leading to violent clashes with the personnel. Many were injured on both sides and one PTI activist was killed as a result of this.

Khan accused the Shehbaz Sharif government of planning his arrest and claimed that this is all part of a ‘London plan’ to finish all cases against Nawaz Sharif. Labelling the administration’s action as ‘unprecedented,’ he alleged, “This is part of the London plan and an agreement has been signed there to put Imran in jail, make the PTI fall and finish all cases against Nawaz Sharif.”

He added that he doesn’t understand the reason behind the attack on people as he had already assured that he will be present in court on March 18.

The arrest is simply a front for the current administration’s real objective, according to PTI, which is to assassinate Imran Khan.

On 9 March, similar clashes broke out in areas around Zaman Park with the police lathi-charging PTI workers, firing tear gas and using water cannons on them. Some of them were also arrested by the Punjab police. The party had planned to take out a rally from Zaman Park to Data Darbar. However, the Punjab government launched a massive crackdown and imposed Section 144 in the provincial capital.

The ex-captain of the Pakistan cricket team has been issued a non-bailable warrant for failing to disclose in his asset declarations, the specifics of the items he kept from the Toshakhana, the repository for gifts given to government officials by foreign officials.

He is wanted on another non-bailable warrant, in connection with threatening District and Sessions Judge Zeba Chaudhry, in a public meeting, on August 2022, in Islamabad.

The cricketer-turned-politician is facing a total of 37 cases filed against him in different parts of the country, including that of, sedition, blasphemy and terrorism.

Jharkhand: Arbaaz Alam, Sahil Ansari among 4 arrested for killing a tribal girl trapped in a relationship for human trafficking

0

Amidst the growing menace of Love Jihad across the country, the police unravelled yet another case when they arrested one Arbaaz Alam and his 3 associates, accused in a missing persons case filed in January 2022 in the Sahibganj district of Jharkhand. Fourteen months after the incident, it has come to light that the missing girl was killed by the accused after she resisted their human trafficking intentions.

As per a report published by Panchjanya, the case pertains to a human trafficker named Arbaaz Alam, who first trapped a woman from a tribal community in his love and then called her to his house to sell her for Rs 50,000. The girl protested when she came to know about his intentions, following which she was killed by Arbaaz and his accomplices and her body set on fire.

Arbaaz and his accomplice then fled from the place. However, 14 months after the incident, Arbaaz and all his associates have been arrested and sent to judicial custody.

The victim, Sushila Hansda, a 26-year-old resident of Sanjodi village under the Barhet police station area, informed her friend Pramila of her departure to Dumka on January 11, 2022, and did not return home thereafter. It has now come to light that Sushila was mercilessly killed on January 12, 2022, by Arbaaz Alam and his associates in the forest of Payaddih village, situated in the Shikaripada police station area.

Arbaaz, a resident of the Palojori police station area in the Deoghar district, was suspected by the victim’s brother, Johnson Hansda. Acting on his statement, the police registered an FIR against Arbaaz Alam and initiated an investigation into the case. The hard work of the police paid off, and all the accused have been apprehended. The Jharkhand police have claimed that Arbaaz, who was allegedly in a romantic relationship with Sushila, along with his wife Rehina Biwi alias Mislata Tudu, Priyanka Murmu, and Sahil Ansari, was involved in the murder.

Arbaaz Alam and his wife, Mislata Tudu, also known as Rehina Beevi, were apprehended by the police in Kerala, along with two young girls found in their possession. According to reports, Arbaaz had allegedly sold the girls in Kerala. It has also come to light that Arbaaz has victimized several girls in the past. Mislata Tudu, who belongs to the tribal community, is also implicated in the matter.

BJP Legislature Party leader Babulal Marandi has expressed concern about the rise of “Love Jihadis” in the Santhal Pargana region of Jharkhand, stating that it is becoming a safe haven for such activities. He has further noted that the Chief Minister of the state, Hemant Soren, is himself an MLA in this area and if he is unable to manage his home district, the situation in the rest of the state can be imagined.

Babulal has alleged that the roots of these conspiracies run deep and may even have links to international organizations. He has urged Chief Minister Hemant Soren to take action to address the situation in his area.

The tribal society’s existence is currently threatened due to significant demographic changes occurring throughout Santhal Pargana, including Dumka and Sahibganj. Girls from the tribal society are deliberately targeted and trapped in romantic relationships, resulting in either the confiscation of their land or their trafficking and sale outside of Jharkhand.

Meta announces 2nd round of layoffs to become ‘flatter and leaner’: 10000 jobs to be cut, 5000 openings not to be filled

In another round of layoffs by tech companies, Meta, the parent company of social media giants Facebook and Instagram, revealed plans to lay off 10,000 employees as part of a major restructuring effort. Meta also announced that it will not fill 5000 vacant positions.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the layoffs in a blog post addressed to the employees. He said that the move is aimed at making the company flatter and leaner, saying ‘flatter is faster’ and ‘leaner is better’.

The company, which has faced mounting criticism in recent years over its handling of user data and its role in spreading misinformation, said that the layoffs would affect roughly 10% of its global workforce. The move is expected to save the company billions of dollars in the coming years.

However, the second round of layoff by Meta was widely anticipated and is part of restructuring plans that include eliminating lower-priority projects and ‘flattening’ layers in middle management, apart from scrapping hiring plans for 5000 openings. In the first round of layoffs in November 2022, the company laid off 11,000 employees.

Mark Zuckerberg acknowledged that the decision to lay off so many employees was difficult, but said that it was necessary to ensure the company’s long-term viability. “Overall, we expect to reduce our team size by around 10,000 people and to close around 5,000 additional open roles that we haven’t yet hired,” Zuckerberg wrote.

“This will be tough and there’s no way around that. It will mean saying goodbye to talented and passionate colleagues who have been part of our success. They’ve dedicated themselves to our mission and I’m personally grateful for all their efforts. We will support people in the same ways we have before and treat everyone with the gratitude they deserve,” he wrote.

He said that since the first round of layoffs last year, many things have gone faster. “In retrospect, I underestimated the indirect costs of lower priority projects,” he said.

Zuckerberg said that he has been working hard to reorient the company around the metaverse, but in order to do that effectively, he needs to streamline the operations and focus the resources on the areas that will drive growth and innovation.

Mark Zuckerberg wrote that the company has been trying to become “leaner and more efficient “. The company has said that it sees the metaverse as the future of social interaction and entertainment and plans to invest heavily in technology in the coming years. This is the second round of mass layoffs, in November last year, we saw Meta laying off 11,000 employees.

He said that the employees should expect the following in the near future: “over the next couple of months, org leaders will announce restructuring plans focused on flattening our orgs, canceling lower priority projects, and reducing our hiring rates.”

He said that after the restructuring is over, Meta plans to lift hiring and transfer freezes in each group.

Talking about the needs to flatten the hierarchy, he wrote that every layer of a hierarchy adds latency and risk aversion in information flow and decision-making. He wrote, “In our Year of Efficiency, we will make our organization flatter by removing multiple layers of management. As part of this, we will ask many managers to become individual contributors. We’ll also have individual contributors report into almost every level — not just the bottom — so information flow between people doing the work and management will be faster.”

Following the announcement of the layoffs, Meta’s stock price rose at least 7 per cent in after-hours trading, as investors responded positively to the company’s efforts to cut costs and refocus its efforts on the metaverse.

The company has not yet released details about which departments or regions will be affected by the layoffs, but said that it would work to provide resources and support to affected employees in the coming weeks.

The news of the layoffs has sparked concern among some employees and industry analysts, who worry that the move could damage morale and lead to a brain drain of talent from the company. However, others have praised Meta for taking bold steps to reposition itself for the future.

The layoffs are expected to take place over the next several months, with the company saying that it hopes to complete the process as quickly and smoothly as possible.

Land-for-job case: Lalu Yadav, Rabri Devi, Misa Bharti get bail in CBI case

The Rouse Avenue Court here on Wednesday granted regular bail to former Railway Minister Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi and their daughter Misa Bharti and other accused in connection with the case related to the alleged land-for-job scam.

The Special Judge Geetanjali Goel on Wednesday while granting regular bail noted that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had not arrested any accused in the case and the chargesheet was filed without arrests. The Court directed all the accused to furnish a Rs 50,000 personal bail bond and a like amount as surety.

The case will next be heard on March 29. Lalu Yadav was seen arriving at the Rouse Avenue Court in a wheelchair.

The former Bihar Chief Minister had undergone a kidney transplant in Singapore three months ago.

Appearing for several accused (landholders) in the case, Advocate Mudit Jain stated that the CBI chose not to arrest the accused person, which is in itself evidence of their co-operation. The allegations are based on assumptions that the sale done was for valid consideration.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its chargesheet filed in connection with the alleged land-for-job scam stated that irregular appointments of candidates were made in Central Railway, violating the laid down norms and procedures of Indian Railways for recruitment.

As a quid-pro-quo, the candidates directly or through their immediate relatives/family members, sold land to the family members of Lalu Prasad Yadav (then Union Railway Minister) at highly discounted rates up to one foruth to one fifth of the prevailing market rates, stated CBI.

The probe agency further stated that investigation has revealed that Lalu Prasad Yadav during the period 2007-08, when he was Union Railway Minister, with the intent to acquire the land parcels situated in Village Mahuabagh, Patna and Village Kunjwa, Patna which were situated adjacent to the land parcels already owned by his family members; entered into a criminal conspiracy with his wife Rabri Devi, daughter Misa Bharati, Officers of Central Railways namely Sowmya Raghvan the then General Manager, Kamal Deep Mainrai, the then Chief Personnel Officer, and residents of VillageMahjabagh, Patna and VillageBindaul, Bihta, Patna and Patna City namely Raj Kumar Singh, Mithlesh Kumar, Ajay Kumar, Sanjay Kumar, Dharmendra Kumar, Vikas Kumar, Abhishek Kumar, Ravindra Ray, Kiran Devi, Akhileshwar Singh, Ramashish Singh.

According to the CBI, all the candidates after their engagement as substitutes were subsequently regularized.

In lieu of getting them appointed in Railways, Lalu Prasad Yadav got the lands transferred owned by candidates and their family members in the names of his wife Rabri Devi and Misha Bharti for sale consideration which was much lesser than the prevailing circle rates as well as the prevailing market rates.

Earlier, the court while taking cognizance of the chargesheet said, after going through the charge sheet and the documents and material on record, prima facie shows the commission of offences under Section 120B read with Sections 420, 467, 468 and 471 IPC and Sections 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 (2) read with Section 13 (1) (d) of PC Act, 1988 and substantive offences thereof. Accordingly, cognizance is taken of the said offences.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) filed the chargesheet in October last year, against former Bihar chief ministers Lalu Prasad, Rabri Devi, their daughter Misa Bharti and 13 others in the land-for-jobs scam.

Chargesheet stated that “During the investigation, it has been found that the accused in conspiracy with the then GM Central Railways and CPO, Central Railways engaged persons as substitutes in lieu of land either in their name or in the name of their close relatives. This land was acquired at prices lower than the prevailing circle rate and much lower than the market rate. It was also alleged that the candidates have used false TC and submitted false attested documents to the Ministry of Railways,” the CBI claimed in a press statement.

The alleged scam occurred when Yadav was Railway Minister between 2004 and 2009. Apart from the RJD leader, the chargesheet also includes the name of the then Railway General Manager.

CBI stated that the investigation had revealed that the candidates were considered for their engagement without any need for Substitutes and there was no urgency for their appointment which was one of the main criteria behind the engagement of Substitutes and joined their duties much later from the approval of their appointment and they were subsequently
regularised.

There were several anomalies found in the applications of the candidates and the documents that were enclosed due to which the applications should not have been processed and their engagement should not have been approved but it was done. Further, in most cases, the candidates joined their jobs in their respective divisions on many later dates which defeated the purpose of appointment of Substitutes in some cases, the candidates could not clear their medical examination under the required category to which their engagement was made and subsequently, they were considered and appointed on the posts where inferior or lower medical category was required, said the CBI.

Russian fighter jet drowns US Air Force drone in Black Sea, USAF calls it ‘unsafe, unprofessional, and reckless’

On March 14 (local time), a Russian fighter jet drowned US Air Force’s MQ-9 Reaper drone over the Black Sea. Reports suggest that the drone’s propeller got damaged in the confrontation, after which it fell into the sea. Two Russian SU-27s and the Reaper drone were flying over international waters. It is alleged that one of the Russian jets intentionally flew in front of the US drone and dumped fuel on it several times.

Later, the Russian jet hit the drone’s propeller, leading to its crash into international waters in the Black Sea.

The US has called Russia’s actions “reckless, environmentally unsound and unprofessional.” In a statement, Pentagon spokesperson Brig. Gen. Patrick Ryder added that the incident took place around 7 AM ET. Before colliding with the drone, the Russian aircraft flew in its vicinity for 30-40 minutes, Ryder said.

Air Force Gen B Hecker said, “Our MQ-9 aircraft was conducting routine operations in international airspace when it was intercepted and hit by a Russian aircraft, resulting in a crash and complete loss of the MQ-9. In fact, this unsafe and unprofessional act by the Russians nearly caused both aircraft to crash.”

National Security Council communications coordinator John Kirby called Russia’s actions “unsafe, unprofessional and reckless”. “We obviously don’t want to see anybody getting their hands on it beyond us,” he added while speaking to CNN about the incident. He added that Russian aircraft have recently intercepted US drones, which was not uncommon. However, the action appeared unexpected to the US officials.

In a statement, Russian Ambassador to the US Anatoly Antonov said Russia saw the drone as a ‘provocation’. He added that Russia did not want any confrontation with the US. The State Department summoned him after the incident. He said, “We prefer not to create a situation where we can face unintended clashes or unintended incidents between the Russian Federation and the United States.”

Regarding his interaction with Assistant Secretary Karen, Antonov said, “It seems to me that it was a constructive conversation on this issue. I have heard her remarks, I hope she understands what I have mentioned.” He further added that Russia had “informed about this space that was identified as a zone for special military operation.” He said, “We have warned not to enter or penetrate.”

Antonov added that Russian fighter jets scrambled to identify the intruder after it was detected over the Black Sea. The Defence Ministry said, “The drone flew with its transponders off, violating the boundaries of the temporary airspace regime established for the special military operation, communicated to all users of international airspace, and published in accordance with international standards.”
