Siddique Kappan granted bail by Allahabad High Court in the money laundering case, earlier, SC had granted bail in UAPA

0

The Allahabad High Court has granted bail to Kerala-based journalist Siddique Kappan, who was arrested in October 2020 by the Uttar Pradesh police on his way to report the Hathras gang rape case.

He was granted bail on Friday in a case lodged by the Directorate of Enforcement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002. Justice Dinesh Kumar Singh of the Lucknow Bench of the high court passed the order.

Kappan, who is also the secretary of the Delhi unit of the Kerala Union of Working Journalists (KUWJ), was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh Police along with three others, while they were going to report an alleged gang rape and murder case of a 19-year-old Dalit girl in Hathras.

Earlier on November 1, a local court in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow refused to grant bail to the Kerala-based journalist in the money laundering case.

On September 9, the Supreme Court granted bail to Kappan, who was arrested under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. In the order, Chief Justice UU Lalit, Justice S Ravindra Bhat, and Justice PS Narasimha had directed that the petitioner would be released on bail in the next three days after applying in the trial court.

Former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochhar, husband Deepak Kochhar arrested in a loan fraud case

0

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested former ICICI Bank CEO Chanda Kochar and her husband in connection with a loan fraud case.

The arrest has been done as part of its investigation into a money laundering case involving the bank and the Videocon Group.

A probe was ordered on Kochhar after fresh claims of ‘quid pro quo’ dealings with the Videocon Group emerged when a whistleblower claimed she had violated rules on the code of conduct and ‘conflicts of interest’ norms. As per reports, the ICICI Bank has stated that the inquiry on Kochhar will be overseen by the bank’s audit committee and will be led by an independent person, most likely a retired Supreme Court Judge. The bank officials have also reportedly stated that the inquiry will begin next week and will be completed within two months. A law firm and a forensic auditor also are expected to be roped in.

Chanda Kochhar has been under the scanner since news emerged that the CBI has started a preliminary enquiry against her husband Deepak Kochhar for being involved in quid pro quo business dealings with Venugopal Dhoot, the promoter of Videocon Group. Though Chanda was not named as a suspect in the initial investigation, it was alleged that the Videocon Group was given a loan of Rs 3,250 crores from the ICICI Bank under Chanda Kochhar’s approval and six months later, Venugopal Dhoot had set up a joint venture with Deepak Kochhar.

The Joint Venture, indirectly funded and financed by Dhoot, was named NuPower Renewables Pvt Ltd. After a series of transactions and questionable transfers of shares came to be owned by Deepak Kochhar, his father and Chanda’s brother’s wife.

It is notable that almost 86% of the 3250 crores loan remains unpaid and was declared NPA in 2017. Both Deepak Kochhar and Venugopal Dhoot have been banned from foreign travel by authorities by issuing a Look out Circular. Deepak Kochharand the family members involved with financial dealings of NuPower Renewables have been questioned several times by the CBI.

Adani group to control nearly 65% stake in NDTV as founders Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy divest most of their shares retaining only 2.5% each

Adani Group has become the majority owner of the news channel NDTV as Radhika Roy and Prannoy Roy – the founders of NDTV – have divested most of their shares to the AMG Media Network of Adani Group in an open offer. The Roys informed about the decision in a public statement issued on Friday in which they hoped that Mr. Gautam Adani will “preserve the trust, credibility, and independence” of the brand NDTV.

Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy have divested 13.44% and 13.82% of their shares respectively to the Adani Group, a total of 1,75, 77,676 equity shares. This takes the total share of the Adani group in the NDTV to 64.71%. Both Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy will retain 2.5% shares each in New Delhi Television Limited.

In their statement, the Roys said, “We started NDTV in 1988 in the belief that journalism in India was world-class but needed a strong and effective broadcast platform that would allow it to grow and shine. After 34 years, we believe that NDTV is an institution that has met so many of our hopes and ideals; we are so proud and grateful that across the globe, NDTV is recognized as India’s and Asia’s Most Trusted News Broadcaster.”

The statement further read, “The AMG Media Network, after the recent Open Offer, is now the single-largest shareholder in NDTV. Consequently, with mutual agreement, we have decided to divest most of our shares in NDTV to the AMG Media Network. Since the Open Offer was launched, our discussions with Mr. Gautam Adani have been constructive; all the suggestions we made were accepted by him positively and with openness.”

The Roys concluded their statement by saying, “Mr. Adani has invested in a brand that is synonymous with Trust, Credibility, and Independence, and we are hopeful that he will preserve these values and expand upon them with all the responsibility required of a leader of an organization of this nature. We look forward to watching NDTV, and its entire extraordinary team, delivering the next phase of growth, one that India can be proud of.”

In a regulatory filing with BSE today, NDTV gave details of the share transfer. Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy held 32.26% share in NDTV in their personal capacity, apart from the holding through RRPR Holding which was already acquired by Adani group earlier. From this personal stake, they have transferred 27.26% of shares to RRPR holding which is now owned by Adani group. After this, the stake of RRPR in NDTV has gone up to 56.45% as it already owned 29.18% stake, while Vishvapradhan Commercial Private Limited, also under Adani group, has 8.27% stake in the media house. Therefore, the total stake of the Adani group in NDTV has gone up to 64.71%, while only 5% remains with the promoters now.

NDTV Shareholding details

Earlier on 28th November 2022, New Delhi Television Ltd (NDTV)’s promoter company RRPR Holding transferred 99.5% of its equity shares to Adani group-owned Vishvapradhan Commercial (VCPL). RRPR owned 29.18 percent of NDTV, hence Adani Group obtained a 29.18 percent stake in NDTV in this manner.

On November 11, 2022, Adani group announced it will launch an open offer to acquire an additional 26% of NDTV’s public shares. On Tuesday, 20th December 2022, Adani Group’s Vishvapradhan Commercial Private Limited acquired an 8.27% stake in New Delhi Television Limited through an open offer. Under the acquisition, it bought 5,330,792 shares with a face value of ₹4 each at a price of ₹294 per share. NDTV share price closed at ₹340.00 today.

With this acquisition, Adani owned a total of 37.45% of the shares in the company. Prannoy Roy and his wife Radhika Roy’s stake in the company following the takeover was decreased to 15.94% and 16.32%, respectively. The Roys, who then jointly owned about 32.26% of the shares, were surpassed by Adani as the largest stakeholder in NDTV as a result of this transaction. Now that the stakes held by both Prannoy Roy and Radhika Roy are reduced to 2.5% each, Adani Group with 64.71% shares has become the owner of NDTV.

Union Cabinet approves revision of pension for armed forces under OROP, to benefit 25 lakh pensioners

0

The Union Cabinet on Friday approved the next revision of the pension of defence forces personnel and family pensioner under One Rank One Pension (OROP).

Briefing reporters after a meeting of the union cabinet, Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur said the decision will lead to enhanced pension as per the OROP proposal. The cabinet meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The benefit would also be extended to family pensioners including war widows and disabled pensioners, Thakur said.

He said benefits will be extended to about 25.13 lakh armed forces pensioners and family pensioners.

Armed forces personnel retired up to June 30, 2019, are to be covered under this revision. The revision will entail an estimated annual expenditure of Rs 8450 crore. The arrears will be with effect from July 1, 2019, to June 30, 2022.

The move is expected to attract youth to join the armed forces.

The decision to implement OROP was taken by the Narendra Modi government on November 7, 2015, with benefits effective from July 1, 2014.

OROP was a long-standing demand of the armed forces and implies that retired soldiers of the same rank, who have retired after serving for the same length of service, will receive the same pension, irrespective of the date and year of their retirement.

Shraddha murder case: Delhi court extends judicial custody of Aaftab Amin Poonawala by 14 days, orders to give voice sample

0

Delhi’s Saket court on Friday extended the judicial custody of accused Aaftab Amin Poonawala in the Shraddha Walkar murder case by a further 14 days.

The next date of hearing is on January 6, 2023. A Delhi court on Friday allowed the plea of Delhi Police seeking permission to obtain a voice sample of Aaftab Amin Poonawala, accused of murdering his live-in partner Shraddha Walkar.

During the hearing, Aaftab was produced through video conferencing.

During the hearing, the media persons were asked by the Metropolitan Magistrate Vijayshree Rathore to leave the court. She said that the matter is a sensitive one.

Metropolitan Magistrate Vijayshree Rathore of Saket court allowed the plea of Delhi after hearing the submission of Special Public Prosecutor (SPP) Amit Prasad and Defence counsel MS Khan.

SPP Amit Prasad submitted before the court that the voice sample is required to investigate the matter.

On the other hand, Advocate MS Khan opposed the plea and submitted that he has not been supplied a copy of the application.

According to sources, Delhi police have some videos and audio related to the case. Delhi police want to obtain a voice sample of Aaftab to examine that evidence.

The court said that the accused has no right to deny giving a voice sample. Therefore, he is directed to give a voice sample to the police.

The court directed that the accused would be taken to CFSL at CBI headquarters on Monday.

Metropolitan magistrate Aviral Shukla extended the judicial custody of Aftab for the next 14 days. The next date of hearing is January 6, 2023.

Yesterday, the Saket court dismissed the bail plea of Aaftab Poonawala after he withdrew the same.

Aaftab is in judicial custody after the police interrogation.

Aaftab is accused of strangling to death his live-in partner Shraddha and chopping her body into 35 pieces. He is also alleged to have preserved the chopped body parts in a refrigerator before dumping them in forested areas in Delhi and Gurugram.

Police had earlier said Aaftab, who confessed to killing Shraddha and chopping her body into 35 pieces, was giving misleading answers to questions.

As Cirkus hits the screens, an old video of director Rohit Shetty roasting film critic Anupama Chopra goes viral on social media

The Rohit Shetty directional comedy movie ‘Cirkus’, featuring actors Ranveer Singh and Varun Sharma hit the theatres on Friday (December 23).

Amidst the fanfare, an old interview of Shetty with ‘film critic’ Anupama Chopra has also been doing the rounds of the internet. The video was originally uploaded on the Youtube channel ‘Film Companion’ on Aug 7, 2014.

In the interview, Anupama Chopra asked director Rohit Shetty about his ability to maintain the common touch and live up to the expectation of the masses. The film director quickly seized the opportunity to take potshots at the host.

“Yes, the connect with the common man is very important. That’s what we are losing now. I am talking about the industry or the critics. You go to a Starbucks and you will meet like-minded people,” Shetty remarked.

“And then you’ll feel bad and you’ll support PETA and you’ll support stray dogs. But if a nariyal pani wala (coconut seller) is liking the film, then, you say it’s mass-y. This is hypocrisy. You guys look down upon mass-y films (referring to movies that appeal to the common people),” he further emphasised.

Rohit Shetty added, “Who is mass? They are poor people. So it is a bad film? It’s not…How you all escape? With due respect to Mr Yash Chopra, I saw your review of Jab Tak Hai Jaan.”

“You said where will a waiter fall in love with a multi-millionaire? Okay, it will fall in Yash Chopra’s world. Why can’t cars fly in Rohit Shetty’s world? So there is a kind of hypocrisy that ‘We are intellectuals.’ That is there. And it is sad,” he pointed out her glaring hypocrisy.

An embarrassed Anupama Chopra was left with no option but to nod in agreement. “Absolutely. No, your movies can (blow up cars in the air) and they do. Very successfully.”

Anupama Chopra and her controversial movie reviews

Earlier, this year, the ‘film critic’, while reviewing the Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri-directed film ‘the Kashmir Files’, had blatantly denied that genocide of Hindus ever happened in Kashmir.

The review had called the movie a bad attempt at propaganda or worse, a “revisionist drama” saying that the “film reimagines the exodus as a full-scale genocide – where every Hindu is a tragic Jew, every Muslim is a murderous Nazi”.

The review that was written by Chopra’s sidekick further read, “Even if I were to buy into the film’s dodgy worldview, the film-making is exploitative – geared towards riding the current wave of Hindu nationalism rather than empathizing with the displaced victims of history.”

Anupama Chopra had also published a piece decrying the popularity of SS Rajamouli’s recent release RRR in the USA, complaining that Americans were celebrating a toxic Hindutva movie that upheld caste hierarchy and Kshatriya pride.

Maharashtra:  State Intelligence Department to probe whether Uddhav Thackeray had directed police to add robbery angle in Umesh Kolhe murder case

On Friday 23rd December 2022, Maharashtra minister Shambhuraj Desai said in the assembly session that the state intelligence department will investigate if former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray directed then-Amravati police commissioner Arti Singh to investigate the killing of Amravati resident Umesh Kolhe through a robbery angle. The Excise Minister of the state said this in response to a demand by independent MLA Ravi Rana seeking an SIT probe into the role of the previous govt in the investigation of the murder of Umesh Kolhe, who was killed by Islamists for supporting Nupur Sharma.

It is notable that immediately after the murder, Amravati police had said that it was a case of robbery gone wrong, and police admitted the Nupur Sharma angle several days later after several people including BJP leaders doubted the police version.

MLA Ravi Rana has urged that the SIT investigate former Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s phone conversation with the Amravati police commissioner for purportedly putting pressure on police to divert the course of the investigations into the Umesh Kolhe murder case. Minister Shambhuraj Desai said that the state intelligence department will probe whether there was any pressure from the then CM to suppress the Umesh Kolhe murder case or divert it as a robbery case.

It is notable that Umesh Kolhe – a chemist in Amravati – was murdered by Islamists on the night of 21st June 2022 while returning to his home after closing his shop.

Umesh Kolhe was killed for sharing a WhatsApp post in support of the former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma who had allegedly made insulting remarks against the Prophet Muhammad. Ravi Rana Rana, an independent MLA from Amravati, also urged that the SIT probe Thackeray’s phone conversation with the Amravati police commissioner for allegedly concealing the incident.

In response to a calling attention motion introduced by Rana in the state legislature, Minister Sambhuraj Desai remarked that the state intelligence department (SID) will produce a report on the issue in a fortnight.

Sambhuraj Desai said, “The SID report will be handed over to the Deputy Chief Minister (who holds the home department) and thereafter a suitable decision will be taken. Detailed information about the Umesh Kolhe case will be taken from Ravi Rana as he has objected to the functioning of the Amravati police commissioner.”

Desai added, “It will be probed as to who had called whom and the report will be presented to the state’s home minister.”

Rana, who has been critical of Uddhav Thackeray on a number of topics, including the prohibition on chanting Hanuman Chalisa in front of Matoshree, said that the then-CM, on the request of the Congress politicians, instructed the Amravati police to investigate Kolhe’s murder as a robbery case.

Ravi Rana said, “MP Navneet Rana and I went to Home Minister Amit Shah and told him that the Chief Minister of the state was trying to suppress the matter. Thereafter, the home minister handed over the investigation to the NIA and its probe revealed that Kolhe was killed because of posts in support of Nupur Sharma.”

Umesh Kolhe, the director of Amit Medicals, was riding his motorbike home after shutting his business on June 21 when he was stabbed to death in the Ghantaghar locality of Shyam Chowk in Amravati at around 10:30 pm. In this case, the Kotwali police in Amravati filed a murder case and detained six persons.

The Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis administration transferred the investigation into the issue to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which submitted the chargesheet in the case earlier this month. 11 accused have been named in the charge sheet.

‘Knew Masood Azhar before hijacking of Indian Airlines IC 814, got an undertaking from his group for safety of passengers’: ‘Bikini killer’ Charles Sobhraj

On Friday, the French serial killer, widely known as ‘bikini killer’, Charles Sobhraj was released from the Kathmandu jail after the apex court there ordered his discharge on the grounds of his age. Sobhraj is 78 and is expected to fly to France to see his family. In his exclusive interview with Indian Express, Sobhraj said he knew terrorist Masood Azhar and had negotiated with his then terror group Harkat ul Ansar for the ‘safety’ of passengers.

Sobhraj was imprisoned in Nepal since 2003 after he was arrested on allegations of murdering American tourist Connie Jo Bronzich in 1975 and has spent 19 years of a 20-year sentence. According to the reports he was also jailed by the Indian authorities and was sent to Delhi’s Tihar jail for poisoning a group of French tourists in 1976. He was in jail till 1997 after which he returned to his home in France.

However, in his interview with the Indian Express, Sobhraj mentions that he met Masood Azhar in Tihar and indicated that he was the one who ‘helped’ the Indian government at the time of the Indian Airlines Flight 814 hijack. He claimed to have secured the undertaking from Masood’s party that the hostages won’t be harmed.

The plane was hijacked in the year 1999, two years after Sobhraj was released. The terrorist group Harkat ul Ansar wanted Azhar out of jail in exchange for the safety of passengers on board. Sobhraj said that then Foreign Minister of India, Jaswant Singh, contacted him in Paris and asked him to talk to Azhar.

“Jaswant Singh was in direct contact with me. At first, he sent an envoy to meet me in Paris. Following that meeting, and my direct talk with Jaswant Singh, I contacted people in the Harkat ul Ansar, Masood’s party then. They, of course, refused to release the passengers but I succeeded in getting an undertaking from them that for 11 days, they would not harm the passengers, but after that, they would start executing,” he said in the interview.

He mentioned that India only had 11 days to negotiate and that the officers had no choice but to release Azhar. “Really, as the plane was in Kandahar, the Indian government had no choice but to release Masood to save the passengers,” he said.

According to him, in 1994, a Pakistani outfit in Kashmir, Al Faran had abducted and murdered six foreign persons after their demand to release Masood Azhar was not fulfilled. “A couple of months later, Al Faran went silent and until today, the whereabouts of those remaining foreign hostages remains unknown,” he added.

He further stated that on Singh’s repeated overtures for him to speak to Azhar, he proposed to convince Harkat ul Ansar that the Government of India would provide an official undertaking, endorsed by Parliament, for the release of Masood Azhar within six months. “Jaswant Singh told me he will discuss it with the Cabinet. But finally, they chose the option to release Masood. You can ask for confirmation from Jaswant Singh,” he asserted in the interview which was taken in 2016, but released today, after his release.

In the interview, Sobhraj also says that after the incident, he met terrorist Masood Azhar several times between 2000 and 2003.

As reported earlier, Sobhraj was imprisoned in Nepal since 2003 after he was arrested on allegations of murdering American tourist Connie Jo Bronzich in 1975 and has spent 19 years of a 20-year sentence. He denied murdering the American woman, and his defenders said the accusation was based on speculation. Sobhraj was also convicted guilty of murdering Bronzich’s Canadian acquaintance, Laurent Carriere, some years later. However, he was suspected of many more crimes, including one in Thailand, where police said he reportedly drugged and murdered six women in the 1970s, some of whom were discovered dead on a beach near the Pattaya resort.

He was also imprisoned in India for poisoning a group of French visitors in the city of New Delhi, in 1976, before facing accusations in Thailand. It is said that Charles has murdered around 20 women from countries like India, Thailand, Nepal, Turkey and Iran. After his release today, he says he wants to go to France and meet his first family.

Puducherry: Karaikal temple authorities lodge a complaint for theft of 8 antique idols six decades ago, 2 traced to a museum in New York

In an interesting turn of events, the temple administration of an ancient Hindu temple in Puducherry has filed a complaint about 8 antique idols that were stolen 60 years ago.

M Elangovan, the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Sri Varathraja Perumal temple in Melakasakudi, Nedungadu in Karaikal district, stated in his complaint filed at the Nedungadu Police Station that he took over as chairman of the board of trustees in 2015. He claimed that ex-board members informed him that eight antique idols of Hindu deities Rama, Sita, Hanuman, Narsimha, Sakkarathalvar, Thirumangaiazhvar, and Ammbal went missing from the temple between 1959 and 1962.

He also stated that no formal complaint was filed back then and till now and that the stolen idols were replaced with replicas in order to maintain the continuity of Pooja rituals and services for the devotees. Elangovan added in the complaint that the current members of the board were also unaware of the theft and that they recently got to know about the same.

The Nedungadu police filed a case against unidentified people under Section 379 (punishment for theft) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and initiated an investigation after the complaint was registered.

Vijay Kumar, the co-founder of India Pride Project (IPP) told the Times of India that IPP has been working on this case for over four years. He also expressed joy over the complaint filed by the board of trustees.

Notably, two of the stolen idols have been traced to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City by the India Pride Project. The US museum acquired those idols after the 1970 UN convention on the means of Prohibiting and Preventing the Illicit Import, Export and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property. Reportedly, the other idols are also in the USA.

In a series of tweets, Vijay Kumar shared pre-theft in situ pictures of the stolen Hanuman and Narsimha idols and matched them with those displayed in the Metropolitan museum.

“wheels of justice finally…@metmuseum matched to theft at Mel Kasakudi temple Karaikkal,” tweeted Kumar.

Vijay Kumar urging the Metropolitan museum to return the idols of Hindu deities to India said, “Since the United States is also a signatory of the 1970 UN Convention, we expect the museum to do the right thing and restore the idols back to India.”

Pakistan’s ruling coalition leader cancels India trip amid tensions after Bilawal Bhutto’s remarks against PM Modi: Report

0

Days after India took strong offence to Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari’s remark disparaging PM Modi, reports have emerged that Jamiat Ulema-e- Islam (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazal ur Rehman, a key leader of the Pakistan coalition government, cancelled a planned 4-days trip to India this week.

According to reports, Fazal was scheduled to attend a religious event in Uttar Pradesh. However, the visit was cancelled as a result of Bilawal’s remarks, which not only sparked a new diplomatic spat but also sparked protests across India over Bilawal’s unwarranted and baseless allegations against PM Modi.

Notably, the already strained relations between India and Pakistan heightened after Pakistan’s foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari made a personal attack on PM Narendra Modi.

Pakistani foreign minister’s personal attack on PM Modi

Last week, in New York, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari called PM Narendra Modi the‘ butcher of Gujarat’. He also accused India of carrying out terror attacks in Pakistan and denied that Pakistan is sponsoring terrorism. He made the comments responding to remarks of Indian foreign minister S Jaishankar at the UNSC, where he had pointed out that Osama Bin Laden was found hiding in Pakistan.

Addressing a press conference after S Jaishankar directly slammed Pakistan for being a pro-terrorism country, Bilawal Bhutto said, “I will like to remind the honourable minister of external affairs of India, that Osama Bin Laden is dead, but the butcher of India lives. And he is the prime minister of India. He was banned from entering this country until he became the Prime Minister. This is the Prime Minister of the RSS and the Foreign Minister of the RSS. What is the RSS? The RSS takes inspiration from Hitler’s SS.”

India strongly condemns Pakistani foreign minister’s comments on PM Modi

The Pakistan Foreign Minister came under fire after he resorted to a personal attack against PM Modi and hit out at the RSS. The government of India strongly reacted stating that the comments of Bhutto are new low even for Pakistan. Calling it an uncivilised outburst of the Pakistan foreign minister, the statement said, “Pakistan FM’s uncivilised outburst seems to be a result of Pakistan’s increasing inability to use terrorists and their proxies.”

The visit by the JUI-F chairman would have been the first by a prominent Pakistani politician in more than four years. In 2018, a caretaker federal minister visited New Delhi to express Pakistan’s condolences on the death of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The BJP has also condemned the “highly shameful and derogatory” remarks of Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and announced to hold nationwide protests against the same.

Ajmer Dargah cleric lashes out at Pakistani minister for a personal attack on PM Modi

Notably, Hazrat Syed Naseeruddin Chishty, chairman of the All India Sufi Sajjadanshin Council and the successor of the spiritual leader of the Ajmer Dargah, had also slammed Pakistan Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for the ‘venomous language’ he used against India’s PM Narendra Modi.

Hitting out at the Pakistani minister for having the temerity to disparage India’s PM, Chisty warned the Pakistani minister against comparing “great country” India with his “unstable country”, stating that the Constitution of India guarantees freedom of religion to all. He reminded him how Muslims in India are “far more secure” and in “much better condition” than those in Pakistan.

It is important to note that the visit by the JUI-F chairman would have been the first by a prominent Pakistani politician in more than four years. In 2018, a caretaker federal minister visited New Delhi to express Pakistan’s condolences on the death of former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
