NIA raids 14 locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Over Ground Workers of Pakistan-sponsored terror outfits targeted

0

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday carried out searches at 14 locations in Jammu and Kashmir against people involved in the spreading of terrorist activities by various proscribed terrorist outfits in the Union Territory (UT) by targeting minorities and security personnel. The search operation was conducted by the NIA in Kulgam, Pulwama, Anantnag, Sopore and Jammu districts.

Various incriminating materials such as digital devices, SIM cards and digital storage devices have been seized from the searched premises, the NIA said in a statement.

The agency said that the case pertains to the criminal conspiracy for carrying out terrorist and subversive activities hatched by the cadres and Over Ground Workers (OWGs) of various proscribed organizations and their affiliates and off-shoots, operating under various pseudo names, at the behest of their Pakistani commanders and handlers.

“They are involved in carrying out terrorist attacks by using cyber-space in Jammu and Kashmir, targeting of minorities, security personnel and spreading communal disharmony,” NIA said.

The case had been suo-moto registered as on June 21 this year by the NIA’s Jammu branch. The NIA’s raid is part of its operation against such outfits targetting minority communities as the government has a policy of zero tolerance against terrorism.

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai informed the Rajya Sabha recently giving a reply to a written question, saying a total of “Fourteen persons belonging to minorities, including three Kashmiri Pandits, have been killed in the Union Territory till November 30 this year.”

He also said that 180 militants, 31 security personnel and 31 civilians have been killed in Jammu and Kashmir in 123 terror incidents so far this year.

The Minister, however, mentioned that the security situation has improved significantly in Jammu and Kashmir, and that there has been a substantial decline in terrorist attacks, from 417 in 2018 to 229 in 2021.

Sharing details on the issue of threats to journalists working for local news organisations, Rai also said eight journalists working in Kashmir have received threats from militants and four of them have quit their jobs.

“As reported, eight journalists working for Srinagar-based local newspapers received threat through terror blog ‘Kashmir Fight’. Four media persons have reportedly resigned. The media persons who resigned belong to the media house ‘Rising Kashmir’. In this regard, a case has been registered in Shergari police station in Srinagar,” Rai had said.

On steps to up security measures, Rai stated, “Proactive security arrangements wherein security grid which includes police, Army, CAPF and intelligence agencies remain deployed across J&K to thwart any threat/attempt at the hands of terrorists or their handlers, proactive operations to seek and arrest/neutralise the terrorists and put them on the run and proactive steps wherein police/other security agencies are providing a reasonable level of security to protect lives of the media persons.”

Kerala government unconditionally apologizes to the High Court for delay in seizing assets of PFI leaders

0

On Friday, 23rd December 2022, the Kerala state government furnished an unconditional apology before the Kerala High Court for stalling the recovery of 5.20 crores in losses from the Popular Front of India (PFI) for a flash strike organized by the banned Islamist outfit on 23rd September 2022.

It is notable that the bench of Justices AK Jayasankaran Nambiar and Mohammed Nias CP had previously stated on Monday 19th December 2022 that the state government’s conduct was completely inappropriate and disrespectful to the court’s directives. On Friday, December 23, the court summoned the additional chief secretary of the Kerala state’s Home Department. He was asked to present a signed affidavit mentioning the timeline for recovering the estimated damages.

In accordance with the high court’s order, the Additional Chief Secretary, Dr V Venu, arrived in court. The HC raised concerns that the state government has delayed the action of recovery of damages from PFI. The additional chief secretary guaranteed in his affidavit that the confiscation procedure would be finished by January 15. The government’s affidavit was accepted by the high court. The high court deemed the occurrence of property destruction to be severe.

The court had said in its order on Monday, “We find the attitude of the State Government, as discernible from the averments in the paragraphs of the affidavit extracted above, to be wholly unacceptable, and per se disrespectful to the directions of this Court. The State Government cannot adopt such a callous attitude when called upon to implement the directions of this Court, especially in matters of public interest and involving destruction of public property.”

The PFI had called for a strike on 23rd September without the mandatory 7-day notice. Suo Motu contempt proceedings were started by the Kerala High Court on September 23. Later, the KSRTC filed a petition with the High Court asking for compensation from the PFI in the amount of 5.06 crores for the harm done to its buses during the strike, during which several protesters had pelted stones and engaged in other destructive activities.

The State Government stated in its affidavit on Monday that the Revenue Department had notified it that the auction and requisition process for the PFI and Abdul Sathar’s properties would take more than a month. It further claimed that the District Collector had notified them that there wasn’t enough staff at the Collectorate to cooperate, and there wasn’t enough room in the offices for the Claims Commissioner. However, the affidavit stated that other arrangements were being made to assist the same in collaboration with the District Collector of Ernakulam.

Earlier on 18th November 2022, the court observed that the State Government had informed it that the Revenue Department, and the District Collector received the correct instructions and a Claim Commissioner was also appointed. The Court held that the State government could not take such a callous stance, particularly when it came to issues of public importance and the damage of public property. The Court additionally stated that the period allotted for compliance with the prior directives would not, under any circumstances, be extended past January 31, 2023.

Abdul Sathar, a former state secretary for the Popular Front of India who is charged in the case, will be brought before the court via video conference. In various police stations, more than 140 cases have been filed against him.

DMK MP Kanimozhi, who was arrested during UPA government in the 2G scam, joins Rahul Gandhi in ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’

0

On Friday, Tamil Nadu MP and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam’s (DMK) Deputy General Secretary Kanimozhi Karunanidhi joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Haryana.

On the third and last day of its first phase, the yatra commenced on Friday from Kherli Lala in Sohna. Senior Congress officials from the state took part in the pedestrian march that entered from Rajasthan to Nuh in Haryana on Wednesday.

Among those who marched beside Rahul were former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, as well as senior politicians Randeep Singh Surjewala and Kumari Selja. DMK MP Kanimozhi joined Gandhi in Haryana’s Faridabad and said that she was happy to be part of the march that celebrates India’s diversity.

“I was delighted to take part in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which celebrates our diversity, in Haryana today. Mr Rahul Gandhi’s vision of uniting India is an idea which will be taken forward by the people of India,” the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader wrote on Twitter. She also posted three pictures of her in the march with Gandhi.

Notably, DMK MP Kanimozhi who is the daughter of DMK chief M Karunanidhi was arrested in the year 2011 leading to a strained alliance between the DMK and the Congress at that time. The MP was arrested in the 2G scandal and it was alleged that she had taken around Rs 200 crore in bribes in the case. Congress-led UPA-II government was in power at that time.

DMK and Congress were strong allies of each other until Kanimozhi got arrested in 2011 during the UPA government and the Congress party had restricted itself from doing enough to contain troubles for the DMK chief’s jailed daughter. Congress underplayed the arrest as it projected it as a purely legal matter. “We don’t think it is necessary for a political party to comment on the ongoing judicial proceedings involving merits of individual cases. All parties have legal rights and recourse. It is not for Congress to comment on the issue. You can rest assured that this being a legal matter there is no impact on the alliance which continues as before,” Congress leader Abhishek Manu Singhvi was quoted saying then.

However, the troubles for DMK made the party more vulnerable in its dealings with Congress and the allies announced separation during the local body elections in Tamil Nadu around 2011. The DMK MP was charged with criminal conspiracy (Section 120-B), cheating (Section 420), and forgery (Sections 468 and 471), and was booked under the Prevention of Corruption Act. She was arrested by the CBI on 20 May 2011, granted bail on 28 November 2011 and was acquitted by the Special CBI Court in 2017.

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s Kanyakumari-to-Kashmir yatra, which began on September 7, has so far crossed Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Telangana, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan.

The pedestrian march, which will spend the night in Faridabad, is scheduled to enter Delhi on Saturday at the Badarpur border, near the Badarpur metro station. After a brief pause beginning Saturday night, it will restart on January 3 and travel to Uttar Pradesh, then to Haryana, then to Punjab, and ultimately to end the journey in Jammu and Kashmir.

Gurugram: Muslims gather for namaz at a public place in sector 69, Bajrang Dal activists retaliate

The issue of namaz in public places has returned again after several months. On 23rd December 2022, a group of Muslims in Gurugram sparked controversy as they started offering namaz in public places. Muslim people who had gone for Friday prayers at the ground in Sector 69 were retaliated against and forced away by Bajrang Dal activists. Tension prevailed in the locality even after the incident.

The incident took place in sector 69 where a group of Muslims had gathered to offer namaz. However, soon some Bajrang Dal activists reached the spot, and then protested against offering namaz in the open spaces. They then asked the Muslims not to offer namaz in public places. As the Muslims did not listen to this, the Bajrang Dal activists chased away the Muslims and did not allow them to hold Friday prayers on the ground.

Bajrang Dal activists said, “In all, six prayers held in open public places were stopped. Namaz in the open should be banned. All public places are being occupied in this way. Namaz in public places means that the land will be occupied in the coming few years. Activists have objected as to why people from other communities do not go to their mosques and offer namaz.” The Bajrang Dal activist said that namaz should not be allowed in the open.

The police force has been deployed at the spot after the incident was reported. The police controlled people from both sides. Law and order situation has been restored on the spot. Additional police forces are being deployed to prevent disputes and violence from erupting.

Namaz in open is not a new thing for the people residing in Gurugram. Haryana’s chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar has taken a resilient stand in the past against namaz in open. Khattar had said, “If someone offers Namaz at his place we have no problem in that. Such programs should not be held in the open. This practice of offering Namaz which has been done in the open will not be tolerated at all.”

It is notable that the incidents of namaz in public places were reduced after the CM took its cognizance. Now, the issue has arisen again as the Muslims in gurugram offered namaz in sector 69.

It is pertinent to mention that another video in connection with the incident has gone also gone viral wherein a crowd of around 40-50 people is seen grabbing the youths for raising pro-Pakistan slogans.

The crowd also forced the accused youths to chant Hindustan Zindabad and Pakistan Murdabad slogans.

Suicide attack in Pakistan: Bomb attack in Islamabad kills a policeman, injures six others

On Friday, 23rd December 2022, a suicide bomber struck in Islamabad’s 1-10/4 area, killing one police officer and injuring at least six others, including four other police officers and two civilians. The Islamabad Police Department tweeted this information. Television images displayed the burning wreckage of a car along with a significant police presence.

A car blast took place in a crowded area in Islamabad, Pakistan. The blast took place in the I-10 sector of Pakistan’s capital city. According to the information, as soon as the police stopped the suspected car, the attacker blew himself up with a bomb. Two Pakistanis with links to Dawat-e-Islami charge-sheeted in Kanhaiya Lal murder case, read about the Islamic org and how they radicalise Muslims in India

Months after Kanhaiyal Lal was brutally murdered in the Udaipur district of Rajasthan, the National Investigation Team (NIA) Thursday (December 22) filed a chargesheet against two Pakistani nationals and 9 others in connection to the case. The two Pakistanis were identified as Abu Ibrahim and Salman. It has also come to light that one of the killers of the Hindu tailor, Riyaz Attari, was associated with the Pakistani-based Islamist outfit Dawat-e-Islami.

Attari along with his accomplice Ghous Mohammed were also invited to visit Pakistan by senior officials of Dawat-e-Islami in the year 2014. Reportedly, Salman, one of the Pakistani nationals named in the chargesheet, had directed the duo to avenge the insult of Prophet Muhammad in a dramatic manner to set an example.

It may be recalled that on June 28 this year, a Udaipur-based tailor named Kanhaiya Lal was brutally murdered by two Islamists, Riyaz Attari and Ghous Mohammed for an alleged post in support of former spokesperson of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nupur Sharma.

The Pakistani organization formed a team of 40 people in Rajasthan to target supporters of former BJP Spokesperson Nupur Sharma

Before we move further, it would be worth recalling that after the heinous murder of Kanhaiya Lal, the National Investigation Agency and Anti-Terrorist Squad, probing the murder case, had revealed that the Pakistani organization Dawat-e-Islami had formed a team of 40 people in Rajasthan to target people who have expressed support for the former BJP Spokesperson Nupur Sharma. A list of targets was created by the terrorist outfits that were to be executed in Taliban style.

As per reports, the 40 people linked to Dawat-e-Islami were given the task of “teaching a lesson” to those who publish posts on social media in support of Nupur Sharma. These people were associated with Dawat-e-Islami for over a year. The investigation agencies found out about the conspiracy by checking the call details of terrorists Riyaz Attari and Mohammad Ghous, who were arrested for brutally killing Hindu tailor Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur for a social media post supporting Nupur Sharma.

Over 2000 donation boxes for Dawat-e-Islami found in Ahmedabad, money collected to brainwash Muslim youth

The Islamic outfit Dawat-e-Islami’s operations are not new, and reports about its role in radicalising and brainwashing Indian Muslims have long been discussed. It was also stated that the group has collected donations from border states to help fund its operations. In fact, in February this year, OpIndia reported that over 2000 donation boxes for the Pakistan-based Islamic organisation have been found in Ahmedabad itself.

Maulana Usmani accused in the Kishan Bharwad murder case runs a centre of Dawat-e-Islami

As per the report, the money collected in the donation boxes is sent to Pakistan from where it is routed back to India via Dubai under the guise of providing Islamic education to Muslims but it is used to brainwash them instead. Maulana Usmani, whose name had come up as an accused in the Kishan Bharwad murder case, is believed to be running a centre of Dawat-e-Islami.

How Dawat-e-Islami was started in India

Dawat-e-Islami is a Pakistan-based Sunni Islamic organisation that runs several Islamic educational institutions and online courses in Pakistan and many other countries. Dawat-e-Islami, which means “Invitation to Islam,” was established in 1981 by Maulana Abu Bilal Muhammad Ilyas Attari.

As per reports, a delegation of Ulema from Pakistan visited India in 1989. They initiated talks to open a branch of Dawat-e-Islami in India. Using Tablighi Jamaat as an example, it was decided by then-members of Dawat-e-Islami to start a similar organization in India.

In 2004, Maulana Ilyas Qadri visited Mumbai and founded a branch, with Qari Shakir Ali Noori serving as the first India head. Following a disagreement with his counterpart in Pakistan, Qari Shakir Ali Noori broke away from the parent group after a few years. His faction was renamed Sunni Dawat-e-Islami, while the second faction continued to operate under the banner of Dawat-e-Islami, with Mufti Abdul Halim Ashrafi of Nagpur as its head.

The organisation’s headquarters too was shifted from Mumbai and Delhi to Nagpur.

Following the divide, Maulana Ilyas Qadri returned to India, visiting Mumbai, Nagpur, Delhi, Kanpur, Ahmedabad, and Bareilly. Now several parts of the country have branches of the Dawat-e-Islami. Every year, Dawat-e-Islami organizes an annual Ijtima (event) to join more people. A large number of people attend these events every year.

The extremist group has since expanded into several nations around the world from its base in India. It began as a revivalist group influenced by Sufi beliefs, but it has since transformed into an extremist Islamist group with overt ties to terrorism.

Recently in 2020, one of the terrorists who were involved in the Charlie Hebdo attack in Paris named Dawat-e-Islami founder Ilyas Attari as his guide. A Pakistani terrorist named Md Ashraf, who was arrested in Delhi in October 2021 was also found to be linked with this organisation.

Dawat-e-Islami brainwashing Indian Muslims into Jihad, offering online courses that glorify Pakistan

Notably, after the murder of Kanhaiya Lal, when Rajasthan police found in its probe that the murderers of Kanhaiyalal had links with Dawat-e-Islami, Pakistan refuted the claim. In the month of October, however, India Today made shocking revelations that exposed the lies of Pakistan. As per its report, Dawat-e-Islami has employed technology as a weapon to push its Jihadist ideology and instil hatred into the hearts of Indian Muslims.

The official website of Dawat-e-Islami provides a number of online programmes on religious subjects. Notably, the organisation is operational in Bangladesh, Canada, Hong Kong, the UK, and the USA but not in India.

However, India Today in its report claimed that when its investigative reporter applied for one of Dawat-e-Islami’s courses under a fake name, Rashid Ahmed, he received a response within hours over mail.

Notably, online classes were claimed to be strictly audio-based while the medium was Skype.

The files sent to Rashid Ahmed (the pseudonym used by the reporter) had content glorifying Pakistan and manipulating Indian Muslims to contribute towards strengthening Pakistan as a bastion of Islam.

In its pre-recorded audio messages, Dawat-e-Islami urged Indian Muslims to confront infidels (Kafirs), and even resort to violence for this cause.

Reportedly, the content provided by Dawat-e-Islami also championed sacrifices (Qurbani) in the name of Din-e-Islam.

Yogi govt in Uttar Pradesh shuts down Dawat-e-Islami run school in Pilbhit

On July 6, the Uttar Pradesh government initiated action against schools operated by Dawat-e-Islami in Pilibhit after the murderers of Kanhaiya Lal were found to be linked with the organisation. The administration had shut down all schools run by Dawat-e-Islami in Pilibhit.

Congress allotted 25-acre land to Pakistani org Dawat-e-Islami in Chhattisgarh, cancelled deal after outrage

On January 2, Chattisgarh state BJP leader and ex-minister Brijmohan Agrawal levelled serious allegations against the Congress-led Chhattisgarh government over the allotment of 25-acre land to Pakistani extremist outfit Dawat-e-Islami. After a massive outrage against the move by the BJP, the allotment of the 25-acre land in Raipur has been cancelled by the state government.

Terror sympathiser, hypocrite, ‘Two Nation theory’ advocate: Pakistani actor Hamza Ali Abbasi whose film, Maula Jatt, is slated for India release

A Pakistani film titled, ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ is slated to be released in India on December 30 this year. According to a report by Bollywood Hungama, the Punjabi language film will initially be released in Delhi-NCR and Punjab, followed by the rest of the country.

The development comes amidst continued tensions between the two countries. The film is based on a 1979 Pakistani cult classic titled, ‘Maula Jatt.’ The remake features actor Fawad Khan as the hero ‘Maula Jatt’ who fights his nemesis and finest warrior in Punjab by the name of Noori Natt.

Interestingly, the character of Noori Natt is played by an actor named Hamza Ali Abbasi, who is known for being a terrorist sympathiser and an active proponent of the divisive ‘Two Nation theory.’

Hamza Ali Abbasi has been unabashed in his vocal support for the 2008 Mumbai attack mastermind, Hafiz Saeed. Despite being well aware that Saeed engineered the deadly terror attack which left 166 people dead, Abbasi was seen giving a clean chit to the terrorist.

While responding to a tweet by Donald Trump, the actor claimed, “You unbelievable idiot! Hafiz Saeed publicly condemned the Mumbai attacks in an interview i conducted.”

Following the arrest of Hafiz Saeed by Pakistani law enforcement authorities in July 2019, Hamza Ali Abbasi extended his support to the terrorist and absolved him of any wrongdoing. He also applauded the extremists who came out in support of the 26/11 mastermind.

“Hafiz Saeed is not a terrorist! His only fault? He speaks for & rallies the youth for Kashmir!” the Pakistani actor claimed in a 2019 tweet, despite being sanctioned by the United Nations a decade earlier.

In 2017, the actor playing the role of Noori Natt in ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’ even challenged a Twitter user to show him an example where Hafiz Saeed is espousing terrorism or hatred.

Once, Hamza Ali Abbasi was confronted with a video of Hafiz Saeed peddling hate against the Ahmadi sect of Pakistan. At that time, the actor had justified, “My brother, i know abt our national sentiment towards the Ahmadi or “Qadiyani” issue.”

“It’s a very complicated issue and not like other religious minorities. It needs to be treated separately if we r to ever bring each other closer,” he had tried shielding the 26/11 mastermind.

In one instance, the Pakistani actor went on to claim that Hafiz Saeed had done great work for non-Muslims of Pakistan and that he bore no ill will against India or Indians. “He only hates & speaks against Indian Govt’s atrocities in (Indian Occupied) Kashmir,” Abbasi said.

Citing an Indian Express report, Abbasi also tried to pass off Hafiz Saeed as a ‘secular-minded’ individual. “It’s the duty of Muslims to protect their Hindu bretheren” – Hafiz Saeed,” he had tweeted.

Opindia has reported in detail about atrocities, which are regularly committed against the Hindu minority in Pakistan by Islamists.

Pakistani actor on Kashmir and Hindus

The brainwashed Pakistani actor has been a long-proponent of the divisive ‘Two Nation Theory’, which claims that ‘Hindus’ and ‘Muslims’ are not just two religious communities but nations in themselves (and cannot coexist).

Under the pretext of criticising the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), he unleashed his bigotry on Twitter. “On 14th August 1947, we got Pakistan because Jinnah Sahab argued that Muslims of the sub-continent are in danger of being oppressed by the Hindu majority,” he had claimed.

“…And once more history proved him right because of Citizenship Amendment Act by Modi/RSS/BJP Hindutva raj, I thank Allah for PAKISTAN,” Hamza Ali Abbasi remarked.

Guess who predicted that no matter what constitutional guarantees moderate Hindus give, Hindu extremists will eventually betray Muslims in India? Yup, Allama Iqbal & Quaid e Azam. Thank Allah for Pakistan & keep struggling for Kashmir, it’s our duty,” he demonised the Hindu community in another tweet.

Hamza Ali Abbasi was also seen endorsing the views of Syed Ali Geelani and peddling mass hysteria about a supposed ‘genocide’ in Kashmir.

It must be mentioned Geelani was a key hardliner separatist leader in Kashmir, who had played a major role in the increase in separatist activists in the region. He was slapped with sedition charges in 2010 for his anti-India activities.

Nothing is Haram as long as it suits ‘hypocrite’ Hamza Ali Abbasi

Besides advocating for terrorist Hafiz Saeed on social media and propagating the ‘ideals’ of the bigoted ‘Two Nation theory’, Hamza Ali Abbasi also unleashes the inner ‘Maulvi (cleric)’ in him from time to time.

He had declared items songs as ‘Haram’ and even ‘quit‘ showbiz to get close to Allah. Later, he backtracked on his claims and vowed to make Islamic movies.

When the netizens called out his double speak, he went on to re-interpret Islamic restrictions on music and acting and claimed that they are in fact not ‘entirely Haram.’

“I have refrained myself from acting in movies with item numbers. I backed out of JPNA 2 for this reason. Trying to practice what i believe in,” he had claimed in November 2018. A year later, he took to Twitter to claim that he ‘left acting’ altogether and chose religious activism as the purpose of his life.

By January 2020, Hamza Ali Abbasi had started backtracking on his claims. He had declared that ‘acting’ was not entirely Haram and that he was planning to make dramas and documentaries to spread the message of Islam.

A month later, he deviated a bit more from his ‘claims’ about bidding goodbye to the showbiz industry. “I just took a long break from acting to give more time to religion & Insha Allah will make & maybe act in projects made within boundaries Allah has set for us,” Hamza Ali Abbasi claimed in February that year.

In May last year, he made it clear that he was back in the ‘Haram’ film industry again. “I have literally dedicated my life to acting on and telling others abt the message Allah gave us through Muhammad Rasool Allah S.A.W. Anyways, remember what Allah has said abt Slander in Quran. Peace brother,” he tweeted.

And Hamza Ali Abbasi is now back with the movie, ‘The Legend of Maula Jatt’, which interestingly has nothing to do with Islam.

Recently, he even courted controversy for suggesting that music is not ‘entirely Haram‘ so as to suggest that there is no religious conflict between his acting profession and his Faith.

Indians are now left with a clear choice to decide whether they want to monetarily support a movie, whose actor is a staunch supporter of terrorist Hafiz Saeed and a proponent of the ‘Two Nation Theory.’

Fact Check: The Telegraph misquotes the Centre as saying there is no conclusive evidence of Ram Setu

English news daily The Telegraph recently published a report titled ‘No conclusive proof of Ram Setu: Govt in Parliament’, giving an impression that the Centre has denied the existence of Ram Setu, the historical bridge built by Lord Rama’s army connecting India with Sri Lanka.

The article quoted Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh’s response in the parliament to a question asked by MP Anil Desai, and which was verbally asked by BJP MP Kartikeya Sharma, who wanted to know if the government was making any efforts to conduct a scientific assessment of India’s past.

Citing Dr Singh’s response to Kartikeya Sharma, the article tried to imply that the government has denied the existence of Ram Setu or the Adam’s Bridge between India and Sri Lanka.

Did Dr Jitendra Singh deny the existence of Ram Setu?

While The Telegraph’s headline tried to suggest that the government had dismissed the existence of Ram Setu, Dr Jitendra Singh’s response did not indicate the same.

Responding to Sharma’s query, Singh said, “I am glad to share with him that the department of space is actually engaged in this…. As far as the question that was asked by him here concerning the Ram Setu, we have certain limitations in discovering that because the history dates back to more than 18,000 years and if you go by history, that bridge was about 56km long,” Singh said.

He added, “So, what I am trying to say in short is that it is difficult to pinpoint the exact structure that existed there, but there is some kind of an indication, direct or indirect, that those structures have existed.”

Dr Singh said the islands captured through satellite imagery showed “a certain amount of continuity in location through which some surmises can be drawn”.

“Yes, to some extent, through space technology we have been able to discover pieces and islands, some kind of limestone shoals, which of course can’t be accurately said to be remnants or parts of a bridge,” Singh said in Rajya Sabha.

Essentially, Dr Singh said that Ram Setu existed at the said location, but since it is more than 18,000 years old, their means to find conclusive proof of the said bridge has not yet yielded the desired result. In a nutshell, Dr Singh was lamenting about their limitations in finding evidence and not denying the existence of Ram Setu, which he said was 56 km long, evident by the continuity of structures at the location.

ASI approves project involving underwater exploration of Ram Setu

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) last year cleared a research proposal involving the Ram Setu. The project involved an underwater exploration that will determine the age of the Setu (bridge) and how it was formed.

The project was approved by the Central Advisory Board on Archaeology, a body under the ASI. The project was mooted by the CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography, Goa.

The Ram Setu is a chain of shoals between Pamban Island (also known as Rameswaram Island) in Tamil Nadu of India and Mannar Island in Sri Lanka. According to past geological evidence, the structure is a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka.
