Delhi-based lawyer files complaint against Aamir Khan for disrespecting Indian Army in Laal Singh Chaddha, hurting sentiments of Hindus: Details

Aamir Khan movie ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ has been embroiled in controversies owing to the actor’s past problematic statements. The opening collection of the movie was abysmal as the calls for a boycott seem to have worked against the movie. However, even after its release, it was pointed out that certain scenes in the movie insulted the religious feelings of Hindus and the Indian Army. According to the latest reports, a complaint has been lodged against Aamir Khan on Friday.

A lawyer in Delhi, Vineet Jindal, has filed a complaint with Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora, alleging that Aamir’s portrayal of Laal Singh Chaddha has insulted Indian Army personnel. Vineet also said in his complaint that a sequence in the film offends the religious emotions of a specific community.

As per ANI, the complaint reads, “In the movie, the makers have depicted that a mentally challenged person was allowed to join Army to fight in the Kargil War. It is a well-known fact that the best army personnel were sent to fight the Kargil war and rigorously trained army personnel fought the war but the movie makers intentionally depicted the said situation to demoralise and defame the Indian army.”

Jindal further complained that the film offended religious sensibilities with a scene in which a Pakistani official asks Aamir’s Laal to pray, but he refuses, claiming that “all this Puja Paath is malaria. It sparks riots.” Jindal says, “This statement shows his intent of waging war and activating enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion which is against the ideology of a secular democratic country like and also mischief against Indian army which is a criminal offence as per the law of the land.”

Aamir Khan, one of the movie’s producers, Paramount Pictures, and director Advait Chandan were all named parties in the complaint. Vineet Jindal sought an FIR against the involved people under sections 153 (wantonly giving provocation with intent to cause riot), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups), 298 (wounding the religious sentiments of any person), and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the IPC.

It’s worth noting that boycott calls against Aamir Khan’s Laal Singh Chaddha have stymied the promotion of the big-budget adaptation of Tom Hanks’ classic Forrest Gump. Aamir Khan’s anti-India remarks in the past, his unfavourable and disparaging representation of Hindu Gods in his film PK, and his blatantly political pronouncements in the past have all contributed to the audience’s rejection.

On its debut day, August 11, 2022, the movie performed horribly at the box office. Because of the low turnout and cancelled shows on the first day, the exhibitors have chosen to reduce the film’s 1300 showtimes on Friday, August 12th, 2022, when the official weekend begins.

Salman Rushdie may lose one eye, stabbed in the neck and liver, one Hadi Matar arrested for the attack: What we know so far

Hours after Salman Rushdie was brutally stabbed at Chautauqua Institution in the United States, the novelist’s agent Andrew Wylie informed that he is still in a critical state. While speaking to the New York Times, Wylie informed that Rushdie was being put on ventilator support and that he could not speak. “The news is not good. Salman will likely lose one eye; the nerves in his arm were severed, and his liver was stabbed and damaged,” he lamented.

The author of ‘The Satanic Verses’ was reportedly provided immediate medical attention by an audience member by the name of Rita Landman. She had earlier informed that Salman Rushdie received multiple stab wounds, one to his neck and another to his abdomen.

The endocrinologist added that the renowned novelist was not receiving CPR, even though he appeared to be alive. Following initial treatment on stage, Salman Rushie was rushed to a local trauma centre.

Identification of the accused

The man involved in the stabbing of Salman Rushdie was identified as 24-year-old Hadi Matar. A resident of Fairview in New Jersey, Hadi jumped onto the stage and attacked Salman Rushdie with a knife.

The accused reportedly had a pass for the event where Rushdie was invited to deliver a lecture. The police informed that the nationality and motive behind the ghastly incident are yet to be ascertained.

The authorities had also seized a backpack, belonging to the accused, from the crime scene. They claimed that the attacker might have been alone and have launched a probe to determine whether that’s the case.

As per a report by New York Times, the local police have sought help from the Federal Bureau of Investigation for determining the background and motives of Hadi Matar. On Friday (August 12), Salman Rushdie was stabbed during an event at the Chautauqua Institution in western New York.

As per eyewitnesses, a man stormed the stage and begin punching and stabbing Rushdie when he was being introduced. The author fell down on the floor, and the assailant was restrained.

Rushdie came into the limelight after his book “The Satanic Verses” was banned in 1988 by a host of countries, including India which was then governed by Rajiv Gandhi, over content that Muslims considered “blasphemous”. A year later, Iran’s Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa, calling for Rushdie’s death.

A bounty of $3 million was offered to anyone who kills Rushdie after Islamists around the world targeted him for his book “The Satanic Verses”, which they said was blasphemous against Islam.

Laal Singh Chaddha, Raksha Bandhan set to do worse than opening day as they see massive drop on Day 2: Details of estimated collection

Aamir Khan starrer Laal Singh Chaddha tanked at the box office with its opening day collection being abysmal. Akshay Kumar starrer Raksha Bandhan also did terribly at the Box Office, even worse than Laal Singh Chaddha, with the collection on day 1 being in the range of Rs 7-8 crores. The estimated Box Office collection for both movies on day 2 is now out and it seems that both the movies have seen a massive slide from the already low collection on day 1.

While on day 1, Laal Singh Chaddha 10-11 crores, it has seen a massive 35-40% drop on day 2 with the estimated collection being in the range of Rs 6-7 crores. At the end of day 2, the movie is estimated to collect Rs 18-19 crores in total. To give some perspective, experts believe that an Aamir Khan starrer movie like Laal Singh Chaddha should have had a collection of Rs 30 crores on day 1, however, the boycott trend against the movie seems to have dented its commercial success.

Raksha Bandhan, on the other hand, is all set to see a 30% drop, collecting Rs 5-6 crores on day 2. After day 2, the Akshay Khan starrer is set to collect a total of Rs 13 to 14 crores.

Interestingly the day 2 drop seems to be far more for Laal Singh Chaddha as compared to Raksha Bandhan.

Why #BoycottLaalSinghChaddha and #BoycottRakshabandhan trended

YouTuber and film enthusiast Dewansh Singh Rajput published a video review of the film on his YouTube channel in which he made some worrisome allegations against the film. Though he repeatedly acknowledged that the acting by Aamir Khan was up to the mark, Rajput pointed out that the movie had several scenes that were allegedly made to satisfy specific propaganda and were Hinduphobic.

Rajput said several scenes targetted particular religions. The movie showed 84 anti-Sikh riots, emergency, Ram Mandir, Lal Krishna Advani, Kargil war, and 26/11, and they have linked Khan’s character to it.

Rajput pointed out that LSC could not even differentiate between Indian Army personnel and Pakistan’s soldiers or terrorist, whoever that character was, and picked him the safety.

In the movie, there was a scene where LSC and that Pakistani soldier or terrorist were having a conversation. This was the point when LSC realized that that person was from Pakistan, but he continued to have a conversation with him. He further offered to do business with the Pakistani personnel in the film.

In one scene, the Pakistani personnel asked LSC, “I offer namaz and pray, Laal, why don’t you do the same?” LSC replied, “My mother said all this Puja Paath is malaria. It causes riots.”

It is notable here that boycott calls against Aamir Khan’s Lal Singh Chaddha have mired the promotion of the big-budget movie that is the official remake of Tom Hanks’s classic Forrest Gump. Aamir Khan’s anti-India statements in the past, his negative and derogatory portrayal of Hindu Gods in his movie PK and his overtly political statements of the past have all been adding to the prevailing sentiments of rejection among the audience of Hindi cinema.

Even Kareena Kapoor’s past statements of mocking the audience and participating in politically motivated campaigns have stirred negative sentiments against the movie.

As far as Raksha Bandhan is concerned, the boycott calls emanated from the Hinduphobic comments made by its writer, Kanika Dhillon. Under the guise of targeting the BJP and PM Modi, she had repeatedly attacked Hindu beliefs and religious sentiments. “Dying in the parking lot after waiting for a hospital bed…Yeh aache din hai! India super power hai! Aur gau mata ka mutra peene see Covid chala jayega (These are the good days…India is a super power. And drinking cow’s urine will cure Covid-19).”

The ‘gaumutra’ jibe has often been used by Islamists and their apologists, including the Pulwama terrorist Ahmed Dhar. He killed the CRPF soldiers as he wanted to avenge those who ‘drink cow urine.’

In several of her tweets, Kanika Dhillon was seen invoking ‘Gau mata’ to take potshots at the ruling dispensation at the Centre.

“Hmm you think one day the cows of India will also be contesting elections? Since they offer more solutions- benefits and protection than our Ministers! Holy cow! Jai Gaiyaa Mayya ki!” she had tweeted.

Salman Rushdie attack: ‘The Satanic Verses’ author punched, stabbed in the neck at New York event

Author Salman Rushdie, best known for ‘The Satanic Verses‘, a book that led to death threats from Islamists around the world, particularly from Iran in the 1980s, was attacked Friday as he was about to give a lecture in western New York.

According to reports, Rushdie was attacked when he was about to give a lecture at Chautauqua Institution in New York. As per eyewitnesses, a man stormed the stage and begin punching and stabbing Rushdie when he was being introduced. The author fell down on the floor, and the assailant was restrained.

Rushdie’s condition was not immediately known. It is reported that Rushdie has been stabbed in his neck and airlifted to a hospital.

In a press release, the New York State police said they are investigating the attack against Salman Rushdie at the Chautauqua Institution in Chautauqua, NY.

“Rushdie suffered an apparent stab wound to the neck, and was transported by helicopter to an area hospital. His condition is not yet known. The interviewer suffered a minor head injury,” the statement said.

Iran has since then disassociated itself from Khomeini’s edict, but hatred against Rushdie had persisted over decades as Islamists continued to mount fatal assassination bids to suppress voices that they comsidered had committed the “unpardonable sin” of blaspheming against Islam. From Charlie Hebdo journalists to French school teacher Samuel Paty to Hindu Samaj leader Kamlesh Tiwari, and recently Kanhaiya Lal and Umesh Kolhe, have been some of the victims of the mentality that had also targeted Rushdie over his book during the 1980s and called for an attack against him.

Rushdie, however, at that time, dismissed the threat saying there was “no evidence” of people being interested in the reward to assassinate him.

Uttar Pradesh: ATS busts JeM and TTP plot to kill Nupur Sharma, arrests one Muhammad Nadeem who was given the task by the terror groups

The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) in Uttar Pradesh arrested a terrorist associated with Jaish-e-Mohammed and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan from Saharanpur on Friday 12th August 2022. The arrested terrorist Muhammad Nadeem was in direct contact with many Pakistani terrorists associated with terror outfits Jaish-e-Mohammed and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan. According to the ATS, Muhammad Nadeem was given the task of killing Nupur Sharma – the former spokesperson of the Bharatiya Janata Party – for her allegedly blasphemous statement against the Prophet Muhammed.

In the interrogation of ATS, the terrorist told that he was given the task of killing Nupur Sharma by the terrorists of Pakistan’s Jaish-e-Mohammed. The ATS issued a press note saying that the agency had received information that a person living in the Kundakalan village of Gangoh police station of Saharanpur is influenced by Jaish-e-Mohammed and Tahrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The ATS also had the information that he was preparing for a fidayeen attack anytime soon.

The ATS team has recovered several types of improvised explosive devices, a mobile phone and two SIM cards from Muhammad Nadeem. Apart from this, goods related to bomb-making have also been recovered. Saifullah – a TTP terrorist from Pakistan – had provided training material to Muhammad Nadeem through social media to prepare for the fidayeen attack. With the help of this, Nadeem was conspiring to collect all the things and attack a government building or police premises.

Nadeem told interrogators that he has been in touch with Jaish-e-Mohammed and Tahrik-e-Taliban Pakistan since 2018 through social media platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, IMO, Facebook Messenger, and Clubhouse. These terrorists trained him in making virtual mobile numbers. These terror outfits also provided him with access to more than 30 virtual numbers and virtual social media handles.

The ATS interrogations also revealed that Muhammad Nadeem was being called to Pakistan for special training by Jaish-e-Mohammed and Tahrik-e-Taliban terrorists operating in Afghanistan and Pakistan. For this, he was planning to go to Pakistan with a visa. He also said that he was planning to take terrorist training of Jaish-e-Mohammed and also planned to go to Syria and Afghanistan via Egypt.

Nude photoshoot row: Mumbai police visits residence of Ranveer Singh, issues summon to appear for questioning on August 22

Mumbai police are all set to question Bollywood actor Ranveer Singh on August 22 on a complaint regarding hurting the sentiments of women. The complaint against the actor was registered by a woman after the nude photoshoot of the actor went viral.

A Mumbai Police squad visited actor Ranveer Singh’s house on Friday, 12th August 2022, to serve him with a summon to appear at the police station for questioning. However, since the actor is out of the city, Mumbai Police will deliver him the summon on August 16.

Lalit Tekchandani, an office-bearer of a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) situated in the east Mumbai suburb of Chembur, and a woman lawyer submitted a complaint at the Chembur police station against his nude photoshoot. On July 26, the Mumbai Police filed an FIR against the actor for allegedly sharing images from his nude photoshoot for Paper Magazine on his Instagram account. Ranveer Singh has been charged under sections 509, 292, and 294 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as Section 67 A of the Information Technology Act.

A senior officer said, “We will be recording his statement in connection with the FIR registered by the Chembur police station as a part of our probe in the case.” The complainant, Lalit Tekchandani, stated in his complaint that on July 24, a friend forwarded him the photographs Ranveer Singh had uploaded on Instagram and Twitter. He claimed that when he zoomed in on one of the photos, he saw the actor’s private parts were visible. The photo quickly went viral.

He added, “Our country is a land of culture and such photos could influence children who have a ‘craze’ for movie actors and actresses.” He said that after more research, he discovered that Singh had done the photo shoot for Paper Magazine and would make a lot of money from it. Tekchandani further stated that the photoshoot will motivate young people who are trying to get into the film business to take similar steps in order to acquire wealth and recognition.

According to the NGO’s office-bearer, the actor’s photos offended women in general and insulted their modesty. The lawyer’s plea also sought a case against Ranveer Singh on the basis of attempting to offend women’s modesty. The nude photographs of Ranveer Singh were taken by Paper magazine. In the photos, the actor appears naked as he poses on a Turkish rug. His photo shoot was inspired by Burt Reynolds, who performed a similar nude pictorial for Cosmopolitan magazine.

‘Was coerced to make the recommendation’: Doctor who prescribed TMC’s Anubrata Mondal 14-day bedrest a day before his arrest tells CBI

0

Days after the CBI took TMC ‘strongman‘ Anubrata Mondal into custody in connection with the cattle smuggling case, a WB Government doctor who examined him prior to his arrest told the agency that he was forced to prescribe bed rest to the TMC leader.

The TMC Birbhum president was detained on Thursday after failing to appear for a CBI summons for the tenth time, citing health issues. According to reports, he included copies of two prescriptions in his letter and requested two weeks from the officials of the investigation agency to appear before them at its city office.

The prescriptions were written by doctors of SSKM and Bolpur hospitals.

On Thursday, when the CBI questioned Dr Chandranath Adhikary, a doctor in a state-run hospital in Bolpur who was the last physician to examine Mondal on August 9, reportedly admitted that he was coerced to prescribe 14-day bedrest to the TMC leader.

Adhikary told the agency, that the hospital superintendent, Dr Buddhadeb Murmu, had ordered him to visit Mondal’s residence for a medical check-up after the SSKM hospital in Kolkata refused to admit Mondal on Monday, saying his ailments were chronic in nature and did not necessitate hospitalisation.

‘If I would have been alone I would not have been afraid, but now I fear because I have a small child,’ says the doctor who examined Anubrata Mondal

“I was asked by the hospital superintendent to examine Mondal at his house. I was asked to prescribe on a white sheet of paper without putting the hospital’s stamp. Mondal asked me to prescribe 14 days of bed rest. He was the district president of the ruling party and very influential… I went there with just one male attendant. How could I refuse him? I was under pressure,” said Adhikary on Friday.

“My conscience pushed me to come out with the truth. If I would have been alone I would not have been afraid, but now I fear because I have a small child. We have a high-class super-speciality hospital but there are people at the lower level who are corrupt,” the doctor allegedly told the reporters.

Dr Chandranath Adhikary also released an audio tape of his alleged interaction with the hospital’s superintendent.

As per reports, Adhikary went on an indefinite leave from Thursday within an hour of the CBI arresting the TMC leader.

It may be recalled that on Tuesday morning, just after CBI officials arrived at Mondal’s house in Bolpur, Birbhum district, to hand out the summons for an appearance at the agency’s Kolkata headquarters by 11 a.m. on Wednesday, a team of physicians from Bolpur sub-divisional hospital also arrived. Following the initial examination, the medical team returned after presenting on a blank sheet of paper a medical recommendation for 14 days of bed rest for Mondal.

CBI arrests the TMC leader

However, after Anubrata Mondal failed to appear before the CBI for the 10th time in a row, the agency on Thursday, in a rather dramatic arrest, picked up the heavyweight leader of Trinamool (TMC) from his house in Bolpur, West Bengal today around 10 in the morning. As per reports, a team of the CBI went to his residence with the CRPF being deployed outside and arrested Mamata Banerjee’s top aide. The CBI team was accompanied by a team of 100 CRPF personnel, who had surrounded the residence while the CBI officials entered the house and arrested the TMC leader.

When the CBI team arrived at the residence of Anubrata Mondal with a search warrant, they found the house locked from the inside, and they had to wait for around half an hour for it to be opened. When the gate was finally opened, they entered the house and conducted a search operation. They recovered documents and electronic devices and questioned residents of the house. The mobile phones of everyone in the house were taken away and Mondal was arrested.

‘Indian women are blessed, scriptures like Manusmriti give a very respectable position to women’: Justice Pratibha Singh

0

On August 10, Delhi high court Justice Prathiba Singh addressed an event organized by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) to opine that Indian scriptures like Manusmriti have granted a very respectable position to women. She said that Indian women were blessed as the Indian scriptures have always honoured women with a lot of respect.

“Our scriptures have always given a very respectable position for women and as Manusmriti itself says that if you don’t respect and honour women, all the pooja path that you may do has no meaning. So I think our ancestors and Vedic scriptures knew very well how to respect women”, she said. She added that the Asian countries were doing much better in respecting women in households, workplaces, and society in general as compared to the other different countries in the world. “That is because of the cultural and religious background that we have, what our Scriptures tell us”, Justice Pratibha Singh remarked.

Singh was called at the FICCI event to address the people on challenges faced by Women in Science, Technology, Entrepreneurship, and Mathematics (STEM) where she went on to say that India is much more progressive about women being in leadership roles. “I think we are lucky to be in a country like India where India is much, much more progressive about women being in leadership roles. I am not saying we need to ignore the violence and the bad things that happen to women at a lower level, but yes at the higher level, in the middle level, we are seeing women growing”, she was quoted.

Driving towards the topic, the Justice said that women had equal roles to play in society as that men. Sharing some statistics, Singh said that more than 50% of the undergraduate STEM students in India are girls. “In B.Tech, it is 42%. M.Tech, 63%. Medicine and health-related causes, 30 to 35%. In engineering and computer science, it is 19%. And these are from 2018-19. In India overall, the STEM graduates are 43% at the undergrad 1st-degree level. Whereas in the US, it is 34%, 38% in the UK, 27% in Germany, and France is 32%. This is a World Bank report. So India is 43%. That means we are educating our girls properly”, she lauded.

Meanwhile, she also stated that the women in India were not able to identify and translate their capabilities well. “Mentally, we are very inventive and creative. But why is it that we are not able to translate our inventiveness, and innovative mindset into actual material inventions which can be commercialized which can help women in making more progress in society and their own business?”, she pondered.

Further, very importantly, she advised women in India to stop seeking sympathy. She said that a woman at work must never say personal things and discuss personal problems. “You can always take an off but never give the reason. You can just say it is a personal difficulty. The more you repeat the reason, the more it becomes a chronic thing that men keep mentioning all the time. So don’t mention”, she said. “When men take an off, do they give a reason? No. So why would you give a reason?”, she added.

During the course of her address, she also advised the women to consider joint families over neutral families and that it is our tradition and it should continue. “Joint families are what promote women. It is the men in those joint families who promote women because they are older, and wiser, whether it is the father or the fathers-in-law, the uncles, or the husbands. They feel proud that women are doing well. So please start encouraging and tuning yourself to live in the joint family system. That way we share our resources”, she noted.

However, Singh’s words were criticized by many left women leaders like National Federation of Indian Women (NFIW) general secretary Annie Raja and CPIM politburo member Brinda Karat. While Raja said that Justice Singh had ‘presented highly regressive ideas which reeked of casteism as well as classism’, Karat mentioned in the statement that the lady was duty bound to uphold the Constitution of India regardless of her personal views.

“The scriptures she has quoted are in many sections directly in flagrant opposition to the Constitution and the rights granted to women of India and especially Dalit and Adivasi women by the Constitution. Her statement only strengthens the retrogressive views of those who uphold the caste system and that women must accept subordination and control of men, fathers, husbands, sons,” Karat said in a statement.
