Bollywood superstars nearing 60 paired against women younger than half their age, what is this obsession

When 54-year old astride Akshay Kumar pulled up his sleeves as Samrat Prithviraj Chauhan, he was awestruck by 25-year old Manushi Chillar’s entry sequence in the trailer. In an uncomforting title track of 56-year old Salman Khan’s flick Radhe, the filmmakers found it fitting for 29-year old Disha Patani to groove over the beats aside the senior actor.

Ageist or awkward or plain misogynist one might ask, since we hardly ever see top actresses from the 90s playing college girls while romancing an actor half their age. They are now doing ‘meaningful’ roles of powerful cops or mothers taking revenge for their child’s murder or such.

The pattern that repeats itself with almost every film starring a Bollywood superstar is the casting of a female lead much younger than him. Bollywood’s obsession with young women who are paired opposite men in their 50s is problematic for many reasons. The audience’s acceptance of this mismatched pairing often encourages the sexualization of young women on screen since the leading lady is usually there for a romantic song or two or has her role reduced to getting kidnapped or harassed or so.

Over the years, the phenomenon of casting young women opposite their aged male counterparts has evolved as an accepted norm. In the yesteryears, Dilip Kumar continued to flirt and romance actresses in their twenties – many of whom started their careers being launched opposite him. The tinsel town publications gladly celebrate the love story of Saira Banu who at 22 married 44-year old Dilip Kumar in real life. In the 1970s, on the screen, the duo featured in a series of hits like Gopi, Sagina and Bairaag.

In the 1980s film Dayavan, 42-year old Vinod Khanna who played a don rescued a 21-year-old Madhuri Dixit off the streets and married her. Except, Khanna was not portrayed as a 42-year-old man. The film industry’s strange obsession with pairing the lead duos with double the age difference has gone unchecked for years. Many appreciated the on-screen chemistry between Salman Khan and Revathy in 1991 film ‘Love’ where they played love interests at same ages in their respective careers.

However in 2014, when Revathy made her comeback in Hindi cinema with 2-states, she was cast as Alia Bhatt’s mother, probably in a role five to seven years older than her actual age. But In the same year, Salman Khan, who was 48 then, was cast opposite Jacqueline Fernandez, in her late twenties. Madhuri Dixit and Shahrukh Khan started their careers in the same decade. The diva got married, took a break from films, and started off her second run in Bollywood only to be cast as a housewife in Marathi film ‘Bucket list’ or in eccentric roles including that of Begum Para in the 2014 film Dedh Ishqiya. Whereas Shahrukh Khan continues to share the screen with half of his age, from Deepika Padukone, and Alia Bhatt to Anushka Sharma – you name them all!

At a time when actresses like Sridevi and Karisma Kapoor were starting their second innings with the films, Bollywood superstars like Shahrukh Khan, Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar were launching younger actresses – Deepika Padukone (Om Shanti Om, 2007), Anushka Sharma (Rab Ne Bana di Jodi, 2008) and Sonakshi Sinha (Dabangg, 2010).

Actress Shefali Shah who often receives critical appreciation for her roles, revealed that there came a time in her career when she had to decline roles after getting repeatedly cast as an over-aged woman since she started her stint in the films. In 2005, Shah featured opposite Amitabh Bachchan in Waqt: The Race Against Time, while Akshay Kumar played her son. “I played aged very early. I played Akshay Kumar’s mother (who was 35) when I was around 28. I got Hasratein when I was 20 and played a 30-35-year-old in it. After a point, I decided if I’m not getting the work that really drives me crazy, I will sit at home,” she revealed in an interview.

It seems leading ladies of Bollywood have a shorter ‘shelf-life’ so to say compared to their male counterparts. While the men continue their action in run-of-the-mill Bollywood style action-packed rom-coms, female roles evolve with their ages when they return to the screens. The industry has negotiated this change with a thumb rule that while women are expected to age gracefully, men continue to come of age on the screen even in their 50s.

The unhealthy age gap in the silver screen relationships has been an unaddressed issue that escalated over the decades. It is not only reflective of the society which continues to objectify young women who drool over gracefully ageing men in their grey, but it also underlines the fact that unrealistic portrayal of onscreen chemistries could badly impact the society with the absurd representation.

The selective ageism on the part of men who refuse to grow up on the screen is a phenomenon not only restricted to Bollywood but can be seen in southern films too. One needs to ask, whether an unjudgemental acceptance of film where the roles are reversed – women in their fifties getting cast opposite men in 20s would see the light of the day with no eyebrows raised?

Punjab: Man kills wife and daughter in Patiala, beheads one of them over land dispute

On May 30, a man identified as Gurmukh Singh brutally murdered his wife and daughter using a sharp-edged weapon in Village Bhunerheri of Sanaur, district Patiala. One of the women was beheaded. They were staying in rented accommodation. Singh is a retired military personnel and belongs to the town Budhlada, district Mansa. The deceased have been identified as 18-year-old Navdeep Kaur and 45-year-old Harpreet Kaur.

As per reports, Singh had a heated argument with the two in the market before the incident. Sukhwinder Chauhan, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was quoted by The Tribune saying that there was an ongoing dispute over a 4-acre land. Harpreet Kaur had recently left Budhlada and shifted to Bhunerheri with her daughter.

Replying to a post about the dual murder, Patiala Police said on Twitter, “A person attacked and killed his wife and her daughter using a sharp-edged weapon. The attacker has been identified as Gurmukh Singh r/o Mansa, who had worked in the army. An FIR is being registered against him and another co-accused. The accused will be arrested shortly.”

SSP Deepak Parek said in a statement that Singh was living separately from his wife and daughter. An FIR has been registered against Singh under Section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Another person has been booked as co-accused. A search for the accused has been initiated by the Police.

Sidhu Moosewala murder

Multiple rounds were fired at his vehicle in district Mansa, Punjab. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared dead. Lawrence Bishnoi gang took responsibility for the murder, alleging Moosewala was involved in the murder of one of their gang members. Reports have stated that a Russian made AN 94 assault rifle was used to kill Moosewala.

New visuals of Shivling inside Gyanvapi compound surface; Swastika, Trishul and Lotus motifs found engraved on walls

In the clearest sign yet of the existence of a Hindu temple underneath the disputed Gyanvapi structure, new videos and photos surfaced online show Shivling inside the wuzukhana of the mosque, along with the motifs of Swastika, Trishul, Lotus and Hindu deities engraved on the walls of the basement.

The video, which is from inside the wuzukhana of the Gyanvapi mosque, shows a structure that bears a stark resemblance to a Shivling as has always been maintained by the Hindu side.

Besides Shivling, visuals from inside the mosque’s basement also show Trishul, Swastikas and Hindu motifs engraved on the walls of the basement, reinforcing the Hindu side’s stance that the mosque was built upon a Hindu structure.

It is worth noting that earlier today, the Varanasi district court heard an urgent application from the Hindu side seeking the handover of the Gyanvapi Survey report, including photos and videos. This came after the Muslim side had argued against making the survey report public.

The court agreed to hand over the survey report, which included videos and photos of the disputed structure, to all Hindu plaintiffs after taking an undertaking that they would not release the survey report in public before taking the court’s permission.

Disputed Gyanvapi structure sealed, CRPF deployed as Shivling found inside during survey

Earlier this month, a Shivling was reported to have been found inside the disputed structure at Gyanvapi mosque’s wuzukhana, the place where Muslims wash their hands and legs, and gargle before offering namaz. The reports came in the aftermath of a three-day videography survey of the disputed structure carried out by the authorities.

As reports of a Shivling surfaced, on the 16th of May, Civil Judge (Senior Division) Ravi Kumar Diwakar ordered the sealing of the disputed Gyanvapi structure. The court stated in its order that the Shivling discovery is significant evidence and has directed the CRPF commandant to guard the complex and prevent Muslims from entering. After counsel Hari Shankar Jain representing the Hindu side informed the court that a Shivling had been discovered inside the Gyanvapi premises during the survey, the court took this decision.

The court further ordered that the District Magistrate and the Police Commissioner should contribute to securing the place. Advocate Hari Shankar Jain made the request to secure the premises after a Shivling was found inside the premise. Madan Mohan Yadav, another lawyer representing the Hindu side, said the Shivling is 12 feet by 8 inches in diameter and is in the direction where Nandi is facing, as is customary.

Heavy rains and thunderstorm leaves the central dome of the Jama Masjid structure in Old Delhi damaged

On Monday, May 30, heavy rain and thunderstorm pounded Delhi and other parts of the NCR. Though the spell of rain has brought some relief to the locals who had been suffering from the searing heat, the accompanying thunderstorm has damaged quite a few buildings, including Jama Masjid. The central dome of Jama Masjid in Old Delhi’s Chandni Chowk area has apparently been damaged due to the heavy rain and strong winds.

Many social media users have shared images showing the finial atop the main dome at Jama Masjid damaged due to the rain and storm that lashed the national capital today.

“The central dome of Jama Masjid, Delhi damaged during the thunder storm today evening,” tweeted a social media user going by the handle @xpressdietin, sharing the picture of the damaged structure of the Jama Masjid.

Sharing a video showing the damaged minaret of the disputed mosque, a social media user wondered if the Delhi government would take necessary actions to take care of the damage caused by the rain. Delhi Waqf Board officials said a team was sent to Jama Masjid for inspection and assessment of the damage.

Meanwhile, besides the Jama Masjid, a video also emerged showing a canopy at Vijay Chowk falling over due to the strong rain and storm.

ANI also shared a video from outside the BJP headquarters, where the heavy downpour and gusty winds resulted in trees getting uprooted and bringing the traffic to a halt.

According to Delhi airport sources, thanks to the severe weather, several flights have been diverted to Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, and Dehradun due to bad weather in Delhi.

Delhi had recorded a minimum temperature of 27.8 degrees Celsius, a notch above the season’s average with the meteorological department predicting overcast conditions for the city.

ANI quoted Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC), Delhi as predicting, “Thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with speed of 30-50 KM/hr would occur over and adjoining areas of West, North-West, South, South-West Delhi during next 2 hours.”

Notably, last year too, the structure of Jama Masjid in old Delhi had suffered damage in the two dust storms within a week’s time.

Enforcement Directorate arrests AAP Minister Satyendra Jain in connection with money laundering case

On Monday, May 30, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Delhi Health Minister and senior Aam Aadmi Party leader Satyendra Jain in a money laundering case connected to the hawala transactions by a Kolkata-based company.

In April, the Enforcement Directorate provisionally attached immovable properties worth Rs. 4.81 crore owned by companies named Akinchan Developers Pvt. Ltd, Indo Metal Impex Pvt Ltd, and others under the PMLA, 2002. The action was taken in connection with the disproportionate asset and money laundering case registered against AAP minister Satyendra Jain, his wife Poonam Jain, and others.

It may be recalled that on August 25, 2017, CBI had filed an FIR against Satyendra Jain in a money laundering case. The ED had registered a criminal case against the AAP leader based on this FIR which was lodged by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in which it had been alleged that Jain could not explain the source of funds received by four companies in which he was a shareholder. The companies have reportedly laundered money to the tune of Rs 16.39 crores from 2010 to 2014.

As per government sources, when questioned by the IT Department, Jain surrendered black money in form of cash worth Rs 16.39 crore, which was laundered using shell companies of Kolkata for purchasing 200 bigha of the land, under Income Disclosure Scheme (IDS) 2016 on benami names of Vaibhav Jain and Ankush Jain.

In November 2019, the Home Ministry approved the prosecution of Delhi minister Satyendra Jain in cases related to disproportionate assets and money laundering.

Sidhu Moosewala murder: Jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi moves court fearing ‘encounter’ by Punjab police

The feared gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, whose gang has claimed responsibility for the murder of the controversial Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala, Monday, approached the Patiala court fearing a ‘fake encounter’ by the Punjab Police in the matter. Bishnoi told the court he should not be handed over to the Punjab Police because he fears he would be killed in an encounter.

The court, however, refused to entertain the plea filed by the dreaded gangster or pass any directions regarding Bishnoi’s safety, saying that security was a state subject.

Bishnoi is currently serving a jail term in Delhi’s Tihar Jail in an organised crime case under the stringent MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act).

In his petition, Bishnoi, through his lawyer said that he also feared that the trial against him might be compromised due to production warrants issued against him by judicial authorities of other states.

He had requested that prior notice of any production warrants issued by the Punjab Police or any other police force against him be submitted to the court and that he not be handed over to any other police force. He also requested that any Police may investigate cases pending against him at Tihar Jail without obtaining physical custody.

Additionally, Lawrence Bishnoi’s lawyer has also filed a petition in Delhi’s Patiala court seeking to ramp up of security of the jailed gangster. The lawyer alleged that the rival gang may try to kill Lawrence Bishnoi.

Meanwhile, sources told news agency ANI that Punjab Police has already contacted top Delhi Police officers to inquire about members of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, as well as Kala Jathedi and Kala Rana, who are lodged in jail.

Sources also said Punjab Police can also take Bishnoi gang members into their custody and interrogate them in connection with the murder case of Sidhu Moosewala. The Punjab Police has said that it suspects gang rivalry behind Sidhu Moosewala’s murder. Investigations have revealed that the Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, who claimed responsibility for the murder of Moosewala, was in touch with someone inside Tihar jail.

Meanwhile, according to reports, Balkaur Singh, the father of the slain Congress leader, said in his complaint that Sidhu Moosewala would often receive extortion calls from the Lawrence Bishnoi group and other gangsters. Moosewala had also bought a bulletproof SUV after receiving these threats, Singh said.

Canada-based Goldy Brar, an aide of gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, takes responsibility for the murder of Sidhu Moosewala

It may be noted that on May 29, a Canada-based gangster Goldy Brar, who is a close aide of the feared gangster Lawrence Bishnoi, had taken responsibility for the sensational Sidhu Moosewala murder in Punjab. In a Facebook post from his account, Brar took responsibility for the murder of the controversial singer.

In his Facebook post, Brar said that Moosewala was responsible for the murder of several of his associates, and since the police didn’t act, he did and murdered the singer/rapper.

The Lawrence gangster group also published a Facebook post confirming that it was them who carried out this killing.

Interestingly, Moosewala’s security was removed just a day before the murder by the Bhagwant Mann-led Aam Aadmi Party government in the state.

Opposition parties target AAP Govt in Punjab, call Moosewala’s murder a ‘state-sponsored’ one

Following the murder, opposition parties attacked the Bhagwant Mann government for the deteriorating law and order situation in the state. Some even called it ‘state-sponsored murder‘ since the state government removed Mossewala’s security a day before the murder. Congress party has gone to the extent of asking AAP’s Bhagwant Mann to resign from the post of Punjab CM.

“If safety can’t be assured to a leader and an artist admired by millions, what can the common citizens of the state expect from the AAP govt? The AAP has failed the people of Punjab completely, the only thing left to do now is- #ResignBhagwantMann,” Tweeted Congress on May 30.

Meanwhile, as per Punjab Police, 8 assailants attacked Moosewala, and bullets from 3 AK-94s were found at the site. The police said that the use of AK-94s is extremely rare in Punjab. The police have also made some arrests over their alleged links with Goldy Brar after the murder.

AIMIM chief Asaddudin Owaisi dog-whistles in front of thousands of people against BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma

AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi while addressing a crowd, dog-whistled his followers against BJP leader Nupur Sharma over her remarks about Prophet Mohammad during a TV debate. Owaisi said that he appeals to Prime Minister Modi to take action against BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

Addressing the crowd, Owaisi said, “If you talk about Sabka Sath, Sabka Vikas, and Sabka Vishwas, you can stay against us, but this is not justified to make offensive remarks against the one whom we revere.” “You’re also the Prime Minister of Muslims of India, you should take strict action against your spokesperson who has remarked on our beloved prophet,” Owaisi further added.

“Tell her that this is wrong. Book her in a case I am saying. You call yourself a secular party. Why don’t you act now?” Owaisi remarked angrily.

Several complaints have been lodged against BJP spokeswoman Nupur Sharma for making remarks on the prophet during a TV debate. Following a Times Now discussion on Thursday evening, AltNews cofounder Mohammed Zubair dog-whistled an online mob against Sharma, accusing her of disrespecting Prophet Muhammad. He was backed by other Islamists, many of whom threatened her and her family with murder and rape.

The dog-whistling certainly worked as troll accounts descended on Nupur Sharma’s timeline, menacing her with various threats, including threats to behead her. In other comparable incidents, such as those involving Kamlesh Tiwari and Kishan Bharwad, it was a similar kind of threat which led to the two losing their lives.

Asaduddin Owaisi had dog-whistled against Hindu Samaj leader Kamlesh Tiwari

In 2019, a video of Asaduddin Owaisi went viral in which he apparently threatened Kamlesh Tiwari for allegedly disrespecting Prophet Mohammad. In the video, Owaisi could be heard saying whoever dares to speak anything against Rasulullah is haram as per Quran.

He stated, “Remember that dog who is sitting in Uttar Pradesh and saying such things against Allah. You’ll be secure in jail, but the rest of the world will be a rat’s hole for you.” Tiwari, a former Hindu Mahasabha leader, was subsequently killed at his Lucknow office by two men named Ashfaq and Moinuddin.

Hearing on the plea seeking permission to worship the Shivling inside disputed Gyanpavi mosque deferred till July 8

The fast-track court hearing the new plea seeking permission to worship the Shivling discovered at the disputed Gyanvapi Mosque built on the Kashi Vishwanath Temple premises has adjourned the hearing till July 8, 2022.

The Court noted that since UP Government, Varanasi DM, Varanasi Police Commissioner & Anjuman masjid committee have not received the plaint copy, therefore, it won’t be justified to give any order without giving them the opportunity to get a copy and argue on the same. The court directed them to file their response/objections before July 8 (the next date of hearing).

On May 25, Kiran Singh, the international general secretary of the Vishwa Vedic Sanatan Sangh, filed a fresh plea seeking no hindrance from the mosque committee in worshipping the Shivling found at the disputed Gyanvapi mosque. The plea had sought an exemption from complying with Section 80 (2) of the Criminal Procedure Code as they can’t give mandatory 60 days’ notice to the state government due to the urgent nature of the matter.

The plea states that since the disposal of the main suit, filed by five Hindu women, may take time, the devotees of deities would be deprived of their right to worship and other religious performances. “In case the sewa pooja, Raj bhog, aarti, and other religious worships are not allowed to be performed by worshippers of Hindu community they will sustain irreparable injuries,” the plea states.

Live Law had reported that the matter was transferred from the court of the Civil Judge (Senior Division) to that of the Civil Judge (Senior Division) of the fast track court, Mahendra Pandey.

In a related case, the Varanasi District Court has also deferred the hearing of the Anjuman Intezemia Masjid Committee’s plea challenging the maintainability of a suit filed by Hindu women till July 4, 2022.

The Varanasi Court was hearing arguments on the maintainability of a plea by five Hindu women seeking permission for daily worship of the Shringar Gauri Sthal in the disputed Gyanvapi complex of Kashi Vishwanath.

While adjourning the case, the court asked the five women petitioners in the case to give ‘in writing’ that they will not leak the evidence to the media/general public they are placing before the court.

On May 27, the Muslim side had asked the court not to make public the video survey of the disputed site. When the court ordered that both the Hindu and the Muslim sides will be given a copy of the court-appointed commissioner’s survey report and the findings on 30th May, the Muslim side urged the court not to make the details of the findings in the mosque’s video survey public.

The Hindu side claims that the 11-hour survey has found ample evidence of a temple in the Gyanvapi mosque. After listening to both parties, the court ruled that the survey report and the videography report will be handed over to both sides on the 30th of May.

On May 24, during a debate on the disputed structure at Gyanvapi, the Hindu side lawyer Vishnu Jain alleged that the Shivling was willfully desecrated by the Muslim side to install a fountain-like structure. He added that a 63cm hole was drilled in the Shivling to make it look like a fountain structure.

Jain said the said structure was still present in the storage room and the Muslim side tried to remove it but CRPF had stopped them. Now the hearing of the case has been deferred till July 4, 2022.
