Odisha: BJD MLA ‘forgets’ to arrive for his own wedding, fiancee says he is running a sex racket

Bijay Shankar Das, a Biju Janata Dal (BJD) legislator from the Tirtol constituency in Jagatsinghpur, Odisha has put himself in an embarrassing situation after he reportedly failed to turn up for his own wedding.

Infuriated by the MLA’s recklessness, his fiancee filed a police complaint against the BJD MLA for cheating and harassment. In her complaint, she also accused the BJD MLA of running a sex racket. The MLA was booked under various sections of the IPC, including 420 (cheating), 195A (threatening any person to give false evidence) and 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy).

The State Congress and the BJP also jumped into the fray once the drama became public. The opposition parties demanded an independent investigation into the woman’s allegations.

Interestingly, merely a day after his fiancee lodged a complaint of cheating as he failed to turn up at their wedding, ruling BJD’s Tirtol MLA Bijaya Shankar Das on Sunday said that he is ready to marry her in the next 60 days. The excuse he gave for not attending his own wedding was that ‘he forgot about it’.

In what transpired, Bijay Shankar Das and his girlfriend Somalika Das had opted to marry in a civil ceremony and had set June 17 (Friday) as the day for their marriage registration. However, the MLA failed to appear at the Jagatsinghpur sub-registrar office on the scheduled day.

Despite the fact that Somalika arrived on time at the marriage registrar’s office, neither the MLA nor any of his family members did. After nearly three hours of waiting, the woman realised she had been stood up and left the office. The next day itself, Somalika filed a police complaint against the MLA. “We had applied for marriage registration at the office of the sub-registrar on May 17. He had promised me, we will have a court marriage on this day at the sub-registrar office. However, he didn’t keep his promise,” Somalika was quoted by India Today as saying.

He accused the MLA of cheating and harassment. She also alleged that the MLA’s relatives are threatening her and her family members. She further alleged that the MLA was running a sex racket to raise money for election expenses.

Somalika also alleged that Bijaya Shankar had tampered with his Matric mark sheet. Notably, the MLA’s father late Bishnu Charan Das was the Minister of School and Mass Education at that time.

The MLA refuted the allegations meted at him. He said that he is ready to marry her in the next 60 days. “As per norms, the marriage registration needs to be completed within 90 days of applying for it. We still have 60 days left for marriage registration. I haven’t received any information from anyone regarding registration of marriage today,” Das told the media.

On Monday, Nine members of the same family were found dead inside their house in Maharashtra’s Sangli. As per the prima facie evidence, the local Police suspect it to be the case of mass suicide.

In a shocking incident, the bodies of nine members of the same family were found in Mhaisal area in Miraj Taluka of Sangli district, in southern Maharashtra. As per primary reports, the family committed mass suicide by consuming poison. As per Hindustan News, The family of Dr Manik Yellappa Vanmor was under financial stress.

Owing to their abysmal financial condition, the family members consumed poison and died by suicide. Among the identified deceased include, Dr Manik Yellappa Vanmor, Akkatai Vanmor (mother), his wife Rekha and two children Pratima and Aditya. The bodies of Vanmor’s brother Popat, a teacher by profession, alongside his wife Archana, daughter Sangeeta and son Shubham were also recovered from the house.

The city police rushed to the site where a large number of people had already gathered. Sangli Superintendent of Police Dikshit Gedam informed that his team has found nine bodies in the house “of which three were found in a single place. The others were scattered all over the house,” he informed.

While the primary evidence has suggested the cause behind the death to be suicide, the police said that the same could only be confirmed after the postmortem report.

Iranian actress and model, Mandana Karimi, has been at the receiving end of backlash from Islamists after she uploaded a video of her dancing and twerking in a burqa. Karimi, who is based in India, has appeared in several Bollywood films like Roy, Bhaag Johnny, Kya Kool Hain Hum 3, and in reality shows like Bigg Boss and Lock Upp.

In an Instagram post on Friday (June 17), the actress was seen wearing a burqa and twerking. In her post sharing the video twerking in a Burqa, she wrote, “I wish shooting with hijab was as easy as this BTS. No hates just bunch of people making a film.”

Reportedly, Mandana Karimi was in Istanbul at that time and was shooting at a clothing shop.

Soon after, Islamists descended on her Instagram account and hurled the choicest of expletives at her.

“Shame! Do not disrespect hijab like this. At least think once before doing such actions!” wrote one Islamist. Another co-religionist inquired, “What else is left for you to do to get work?”

“Shameless woman, you have made a mockery of burqa,” asserted Muzamil Aslam. One Islamist referred to her as ‘Harami Kutiya (bastard bit*h)’ and ordered her to maintain the dignity of the burqa.

“Please don’t make people hate you. No one knows what you are from inside. So they judge you, and judge you hard,” another user said.

Several users also used derogatory and misogynist labels for Mandana Karimi, including ‘Nachaniya’, ‘Madarjat’ and ‘Chinaal’ (prostitute)

In a shocking incident in Nagla Bohar village of Mathura district in Uttar Pradesh, a man allegedly killed a 16 years old girl and severely injured her mother because the girl did not accept his friend request on Facebook. After committing the crime, the man tried to kill himself as well and is now hospitalised.

The accused Ravi is a resident of Muzzafarnagar, the Superintendent of Police (city) Martand Prakash Singh shared. A case has been registered against him based on the complaint by the father of the murdered girl. The victim’s father, Tejveer Singh, works as security personnel at a factory in Faridabad, Haryana. In his complaint, Tejveer alleged that Ravi killed his daughter as she did not accept his friend request on Facebook.

As per the police, on Sunday evening, when Tejveer Singh was at work, Ravi reached their home, apparently to deliver the invitation card for a wedding. The minor victim opened the door, and once inside, Ravi took out a knife he had hidden in the invitation card and stabbed the girl multiple times resulting in her death.

Upon hearing the girl’s screams, her mother Sunita rushed to the room and the accused attacked her as well, stabbing her in the back and the shoulders. Seriously wounded Sunita is currently undergoing treatment in the local city hospital where her condition continues to remain critical.

After attacking the mother-daughter duo, Ravi tried to commit suicide as well by stabbing himself. He is also currently undergoing treatment in the district hospital.

As tensions rise between Europe and Russia over the war in Ukraine, Moscow has dramatically reduced the gas flow to the continent, forcing countries to recalibrate supplies for their energy requirements. Germany, the country with the highest GDP in Europe, has decided to restart its coal power plants to conserve its depleting reserves of natural gas. 

Germany’s economy minister on Sunday announced the decision after Russia cut gas deliveries last week in the wake of European leaders’ visit to Kyiv to show solidarity and unity with Ukraine against the Russian invasion. With no end in sight to the ongoing war and energy supplies from Russia becoming fickle, Germany has decided to restart its coal power plants to fortify its energy needs.

As a retaliatory measure against sanctions imposed on Moscow by the European nations over the Ukraine war, Russia had cut off gas supplies to several countries. Then last week, Russian gas giant Gazprom reduced flows through the Nord Stream pipeline, an important undersea link that carries gas directly to Germany.

While Gazprom cited maintenance issues as the cause for the cutbacks, European leaders believe it is a political tactic by Russia’s Vladimir Putin to exact revenge for crippling sanctions imposed against Moscow.

Robert Habeck, the economy minister and Germany’s vice-chancellor, said Sunday the situation is grim and laid out steps his country plans to take to store enough gas to get through the winter. They include re-operationalising the coal power plants that were phased out to reduce the country’s carbon emissions.

“That’s bitter, but it’s simply necessary in this situation to lower gas usage,” said Mr. Habeck. “The gas storage tanks must be full by winter. That is our top priority.”

German leaders had dismissed Donald Trump’s warning bells of reliance on Russian energy imports

As Germany scrambles to shake off their dependence on Russian energy imports, the spotlight is on the German political class for failing to raise the alarm over the country’s increasing reliance on Moscow for its energy requirements.

Instead, German leaders, as early as 2018, were in denial mode over the country’s growing dependence on Russia for its gas needs, despite being warned by the then US President Donald Trump.

In July 2018, Donald Trump voiced his concerns over Germany leaning on Russian gas imports to fulfil its requirements. Speaking to the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said, “Germany will totally become dependent on Russian energy if it does not immediately change course.”

He further added, “Here in the Western Hemisphere, we are committed to maintaining our independence from the encroachment of expansionist, foreign powers.”

However, Trump’s prescient warning that Germany will become dependent on Russian energy imports at the United Nations was met with derision by the German delegation, which scoffed at Trump’s forewarning. 

Several Western news organisations, including CNN, which harboured deep prejudice against Trump, dismissed his warning as an exaggeration and termed his assertions “highly inaccurate claims”. Less than four years later, the short-shrift by German leaders has come back to haunt them as the Russia-Ukraine war grinds on, ushering Germany into an imminent energy crisis.

Veteran Congress leader and Gandhi family loyalist Subodh Kant Sahay has recently courted controversy for wishing death upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi during a protest over the recently launched Agnipath scheme.

In a video aired by Times Now, Sahay could be heard as saying, “I think Modi has surpassed all records made by Hitler. Even that dictator had started an army recruitment scheme (like Modi’s Agnipath)”.

“Modi Hitler ki raha chalega, toh Hitler ki Maut marega (If Modi treads the path of Hitler, then, he will die like him,” the Congress leader wished death upon the Indian Prime Minister.

“This is a country of Congress martyrs. Despite such a long list of people who sacrificed their lives for the nation, the party did not cross the line,” he added.

Subodh Kant Sahay claimed to have seized the microphone from Sonia Gandhi when she refused to become the Prime Minister in 2004 by claiming that the party members got elected due to her. “No Congress worker will tolerate insult of Sonia Gandhi,” he continued.

While speaking to Times Now, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla condemned the Congress for not reprimanding its leaders for making inflammatory remarks against PM Modi. He also accused Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi of encouraging party leaders to make such statements.

‘Modi will die a dog’s death’: Says Maharashtra Congress leader Sheikh Hussain

Recently, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a complaint against Congress leader Sheikh Hussain at the Gittikhadan Police Station for making derogatory comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Nagpur.

The BJP leaders had sought strict action against Hussain and also demanded his arrest within 48 hours. “Jaise Kutte ki maut hoti hai vaise Narendra Modi ki maut hogi (Modi will die a dog’s death)”, he said while demonstrating outside the ED office in Nagpur to protest against the interrogation of Congress MP Rahul Gandhi by the ED.

Several Congress leaders and workers from the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra staged a protest and criticized PM Modi and the ED for questioning Congress’s Rahul Gandhi in connection with a money-laundering probe linked to the National Herald newspaper.

The Nagpur Police in response to the aggressive protest detained state ministers Nitin Raut and Vijay Waddetiwar along with other Congress workers.

PIB fact-checks fake Ministry of Defence letter on the Agnipath scheme circulating online mentioning revised terms of service for recently enrolled cadres

Ever since the Government of India launched the Agnipath scheme for recruitment in the Indian Armed Forces, along with violent protests, a barrage of misinformation is also being spread against the scheme by nefarious elements. Only today (June 20), the official handle of the PIB India had to post a Tweet debunking a fake letter circulating on social media on the Agnipath Recruitment scheme, which was claimed to be issued by the Ministry of Defence.

Sharing a screenshot of the fake letter, PIB warned that the letter is fake. “The Ministry of Defence has not issued this letter”, read the Tweet.

According to PIB, the letter circulating with claims of being issued by the Ministry of Defence to the chiefs of the Indian Armed Forces speaks about the revised terms and tenure of service for recently enrolled jawans, airmen and sailors. The letter is dated June 17, 2022, and duly signed by one MK Ramanna who has signed the letter as the Additional Secretary to GOI.

The fake letter was shared by several social media users on Twitter, trying to create more confusion and misinformation about the Agnipath scheme.

The letter claims that the ORs attested after 1 Jan 2019 and those not promoted to a substantive rank of Naik or equivalent on 1 July 2022 are to be kept under the Agnipath Scheme. While dismissing the latter’s specific claim, PIB deemed the entire letter to be a fabrication.

Notably, OpIndia also did not find any MK Ramanna’s name in the list of officials working for the Indian Defence Ministry.

Centre bans 35 WhatsApp groups for spreading misinformation on Agnipath scheme, arrests 10 for spreading fake news

Earlier, on June 19, the centre banned 35 WhatsApp groups for spreading misinformation about the Agnipath scheme. The govt is tracking people spreading misinformation about the scheme, and taking action against such people.

Reportedly, the WhatsApp groups were found spreading wrong information about the Agnipath recruitment scheme and were fuelling violence against it. The union home ministry informed that other than banning the messaging groups, at least 10 persons also have been arrested for spreading fake news about the armed forces recruitment scheme.

The central govt has also appealed to the people to report any people or group spreading such fake news about the Agnipath scheme. People can inform the PIB fact check team about such spreading of misinformation through WhatsApp on the number 8799711259.

Notably, the Indian Army on Sunday released terms and conditions and related details for prospective applicants wanting to join the force under the Agnipath military recruitment scheme. OpIndia had also written a detailed report on the FAQs based on the information provided by the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces which would help individuals in understanding the scheme better.

‘Target railways’ toolkit activated: Congress workers stop train while protesting against Rahul Gandhi’s ED questioning and Agnipath Scheme

On Monday, June 20 Congress party workers descended upon the railway stations in the national capital as part of their 2-in-1 ‘peaceful’ protest, one against the ED’s questioning of their supremo Rahul Gandhi in the National Herald scam and the other protesting the Central Government’s Agnipath Recruitment Scheme. Chanting anti-government slogans, some of the protesting Youth Congress workers climbed on the trains while some blocked the tracks at Delhi’s Shivaji Bridge railway station.

The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) themselves also took to Twitter to share the video of the ruckus they created at Delhi’s busy Shivaji Bridge railway station.

This seems to be Congress’ latest toolkit to defame the BJP government at the centre. Last year an alleged toolkit claimed by the AICC created an upheaval on social media platforms advocating ways to defame Prime Minister Narendra Modi and India amidst the raging pandemic. OpIndia CEO Rahul Roshan had then weighed in as to why and how the Congress ‘toolkit’ was bad news for them only.

Meanwhile, in the video shared today, the youth Congress workers can be seen atop a halted train while some are seen lying on the railway tracks and chanting anti-Modi slogans. One of the protestors atop the train is seen holding a Congress poster with Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi’s pictures on it. The police personnel and Railway police can be seen trying to remove the workers from the tracks.

According to reports, one protestor was injured in the ensuing ruckus. The Congress workers, however, kept creating nuisance until being lifted away and detained by police at the scene.

“The government of India needs to rollback Agniveer scheme. The Youth Congress will fight for the Unemployed youth of this country who want to serve the country and armed forces,” India Today quoted a Congress protestor as saying.

Interestingly, only yesterday, the Congress had declared that it will hold a ‘peaceful’ 2-in-1 protest at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and not even 24 hours have gone by since these Congress Youth workers have reached Delhi’s Shivaji Bridge railway station in large numbers and jammed the railway track. In fact, on Sunday (June 19), the Congress Party organised a ‘Satyagraha’ agitation led by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra against the Centre’s Agnipath Scheme at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar and today they plan to continue with their dual-purpose agitation.

It may be recalled that last week, the Congress workers had sparked mayhem on the streets of Delhi on Wednesday, June 15 to protest against Rahul Gandhi’s summons by ED. The party workers indulged in arson and burnt tyres on the streets of Delhi to protest.

Additionally, the protestors claiming to be Armed Forces aspirants in Bihar and other adjoining states had also indulged in vandalism against the Agnipath scheme. Since Monday, June 13, several videos have emerged where these youths were seen creating nuisance on the streets and vandalising and setting trains on fire in multiple cities.

A video of protestors hurling abusive slurs at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and burning tyres in the middle of the road has surfaced online. Also, videos of youths shouting slogans and vandalising the Ballia-Varanasi Memu and Ballia-Shahganj trains had gone viral. In another video shared by NDTV, Bihar Sampark Kranti Express can be seen set on fire in Bihar’s Samastipur area. The alleged army aspirants vandalised and blocked railway tracks at the Lakhminia railway station in Bihar.

The day prior to that, protestors blocked the movement of trains on Patna-Gaya and Patna-Buxar routes by lying down on the railway tracks in Jehanabad and Buxar districts. The agitators could also be seen throwing stones at the Police, which were controlled by lathi-charge. A train was set on fire in Chhapra too. A similar ruckus also ensued in other states like Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Prades, and Madhya Pradesh.

Interestingly, evidence has emerged pointing that the violence against the Agnipath Scheme may have been planned and that opposition parties and people with vested interests had been spreading misinformation and provoking youth to agitate against the scheme.

Recently, videos of a heavily intoxicated woman abusing police, her cab driver, and passersby on the road have gone viral on the microblogging site, Twitter. The woman, in a series of videos shot by the enraged cab driver and people witnessing her shenanigans, could be seen lingering on the streets while heavily abusing police – allegedly under the influence of alcohol.

It all transpired when three young women were in an Ola cab while allegedly returning from a party late at night in Mumbai. One of the women, who was heavily drunk, started abusing the cab driver during the ride. Apparently, the lady even threw the driver out and took control of the car. As Police arrived at the scene, she held one of the officers by his collar and threatened him.

In the multiple videos that have gone viral, the woman could be seen going completely unhinged because of an alcohol overdose. In the above video shared by Twitter user @pb3060, the woman was standing beside a Mumbai Police vehicle while screening at her friend Roshni. The woman could also be seen heavily abusing anyone passing by on the road.

The driver started recording the video of the woman who took control of the car and refused to come out of the driver’s seat. Even after being repeatedly told by the Police and the driver to get out and behave, the drunk lady did not budge. Unapologetically posing for the video, she could be heard introducing herself with a roaring laugh, “Hello, my name is Archita..”

When a friend of hers intervened to stop her from doing so, she was slapped by the drunk lady instead. The video shot by the driver has made waves on social media, who in the clip could be heard saying, “Let the world know how Ola/Uber drivers are harassed.”

The intoxicated lady created quite a scene when she took over the road lying right in the middle of it. Looking at the condition of her clothes, a few netizens suspected that she might have urinated in her pants. During the fiasco, the woman sat on the road and kept on screaming abuses.

The passers-by were aghast looking at the condition of the woman. When one of her friends tried to control her, the woman slapped her and being unable to control her, fell on the road itself.

The drunken lady challenged that nothing would happen to her even if the police and the media were called. In one of the videos, the woman could be seen holding a police officer by his collar and threatening him with abuses. When the policeman tried to control her, she kicked her in her drunken state.

When OpIndia tried to verify the videos, we found that the case is from March 25, 2022. The Mumbai Police has registered a case against the three women for disturbing public law and order under the influence of alcohol.

All three were taken into police custody and further action is being taken. Mumbai, which has an active nightlife, witnesses several cases of such violations on a regular basis.

Less than two months after being re-elected as the French President, Emmanuel Macron has lost the majority in the French National Assembly severely denting his hopes of pushing through his promised reforms. Strong performances by the left alliance NUPES led by far-left leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon and Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally Party in the elections have reduced Macron’s government to a minority in the national assembly.

Macron’s centrist coalition had more than 300 seats earlier and needed 289 seats to retain its majority in the national assembly. However, they fell well short with 245 seats in the election as several high-profile leaders, including Health Minister and Green Transition Minister lost. The election, which saw a very low voter turnout at 46.23%, has delivered a huge setback to Macron who will now have to rely on his opponents to get his reforms passed.

The left alliance NUPES has emerged as the main opposition winning 131 seats while Le Pen’s Rally Party has jumped from 8 to 89 seats. Macron will now have to negotiate with them and seek a compromise every time he wants to pass a bill through the parliament.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, who was recently appointed by Macron, called the situation unprecedented and said that they will start working immediately to cobble together a working majority to try and ensure France doesn’t end up with a policy paralysis over the next 5 years.

The outcome has come as a big setback for Emmanuel Macron following his April presidential election victory when he defeated the far-right to be the first French president to win a second term in over two decades. Now he will have to deal with this unprecedented situation in French politics where he will have to run a minority government for the next 5 years.
