Jharkhand: Bangladeshi woman arrested for Naxal connections, PLFI extremists found using expensive cars

0

Jharkhand Police has arrested a Bangladeshi woman from Delhi in the Naxal funding and arms supply case. The accused woman is Kaneez Fatima, a native of Khulna who illegally came to India about seven years back and changed her name to Anjali Patel.

As per reports, the Bangladeshi woman primarily worked at a massage parlour in Bangalore and then came to Delhi where she joined another massage parlour. Here she came in contact with one Nivesh Kumar whom Jharkhand police arrested for supplying weapons and making investments on the behalf of Dinesh Gope, the chief of the banned Naxal outfit PLFI.

A week back, Ranchi police had arrested some PLFI operatives and on their disclosure, police arrested one Nivesh Kumar along with some associates from Buxar in Bihar. Nivesh is a native of Bihar but he was settled at Dhurwa in Ranchi. He was earlier arrested in cheating cases.

“From his possession, we recovered two SUVs, Rs 71 lakh cash collected as a levy, around a dozen sleeping bags and tents used in the jungle warfare. Both SUVs BMW and Thar are very costly,” a senior official of Ranchi police have informed.

SUV Thar seized from the possession of Nivesh Kumar. Police said that the vehicle was modified so that it could be used in the forest area.
Police seized tents and sleeping bags which Nivesh Kumar had procured for the supply to PLFI.

Police said that the forensic examination of his mobile phones revealed the detail of sophisticated weapons and some of the suspicious chats with arms smugglers. Here police came to know about a Bangladeshi woman who was reportedly his ‘right hand’. The Bangladeshi woman, arrested from Delhi, has been brought to Ranchi.

“We will seek her police remand for questioning since she knows many dirty secrets of PLFI funding and investment. It can’t be ruled out that Nivesh may have links with arms smugglers from Pakistan, Bangladesh, and China,” said the official.

Nivesh had bought a hotel for the Bangladeshi woman Fatima

Police said that Nivesh regularly visited Delhi, Kolkata, and other cities for merrymaking and to invest on behalf of Gope. Here he came in contact with Fatima whom he gave the name Lily. Nivesh brought a three-star hotel in Delhi in her name and asked her to manage it. The said hotel is situated under the Basant Kunj police station area.

Ranchi police said that this Bangladeshi woman Fatima, while illegally living in Delhi, was providing accommodations to PLFI extremists at her hotel in Delhi. During the questioning, she told the police that Nivesh had married her and used to introduce her as his wife so that people don’t doubt them. Police have seized a fake AADHAR card from her possession. Another senior official of Ranchi police who questioned the woman said that she has a daughter who lives in Bangladesh.

“She had a daughter from her first husband whom she deserted and came to India. She was actively involved with Nivesh in Naxal activities.

Police also arrested Subhash Paswan and Praveen Paswan who are father and brother of Nivesh for their involvement in Naxal activities.

‘He has a right to voice opinions’: Ex-Muslim Aneesh gets bail, was arrested in Tamil Nadu for ‘insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad’

A Tamil Nadu court Wednesday, January 12 granted bail to Aneesh Jasy, reports TOI. Jasy, a resident of BK Pudur in Coimbatore, describes himself as an ‘ex-Muslim rationalist’. He had been arrested by Tamil Nadu Police on December 29th, for posting alleged ‘anti-Islamic posts’ on Facebook.

While granting bail, Judge R Sakthivel of the Principal District and Session court opined that there is no prima facie evidence against Jasy and the charges are yet to be ascertained.

Judge R Sakthivel remarked, “The court is unable to find prima facie evidence that the petitioner is generating public disturbance.”

“He has the right to voice his thoughts on religion and God’s existence under the Indian Constitution,” said the Judge.

On December 29th, Aneesh, who is a popular ‘rationalist’ among atheist groups in Tamil Nadu was arrested and taken to the Kuniyamuthur Police station. According to Aneesh’s friend, his arrest on December 29th was made without a warrant while he was being taken to the police station asking for his presence concerning an inquiry about his colleague. Aneesh’s friend had alleged that an FIR was made only after his arrest.

Aneesh charged and arrested for posting memes

Sub-Inspector V Ganesh Kumar has stated that he was made aware of the ‘anti-Islamic’ posts by Aneesh insulting Islam, the Prophet and the Holy Quran. He confirmed that he has gone through the Facebook posts and copies of them have been attached in the FIR. According to a report by The News Minute, one of the posts included in the FIR is a meme saying ”people cry crocodile tears over a book that they insist is holy.” Featuring an ex-Muslim, the meme says “he is ashamed when he reads the Hadith.” Another post on Aneesh’s profile can be seen him comparing prophet Mohammad to a self-styled Godwoman.

After assessing the posts, the rationalist had been charged under 295A (deliberate and malicious acts meant to outrage religious feelings), 153A1c (promoting enmity between different groups of religion, race place of birth etc.) and 505-2 (statement conducing to public mischief) by the Kuniyamuthur Police station.

Aneesh, who is now in the Coimbatore Central Jail, was initially sent to the Perundurai sub-jail. A bail plea submitted by his friend was rejected on January 5, before he was granted bail on January 12.

Jawed Habib’s company CEO defends spitting on woman’s hair, says it was meant to make people laugh during seminar

A week after hairstylist Jawed Habib tendered an apology for spitting on a woman’s hair during a seminar, his company’s CEO has come out in his defence saying that the act was only meant to create some laughter during the seminar. Venkata Raveendra Ravi, CEO of the Jawed Habib Hair and Beauty Ltd, reportedly stated to Republic TV that Habib often does such things to keep the trainees entertained.

“Jawed Habib is one of the famous hairstylists in the country. Many people from the industry come here for months of courses or day-long workshops. These seminars are attended by at least 100-800 people and last for 4-8 hours. People tend to get bored due to the long duration, so in order to maintain the concentration of the people, he creates humour,” Ravi was quoted.

The Jawed Habib spit debacle gained momentum when a hairstylist named Pooja Gupta lodged an official complaint against Habib for humiliating her in public. Pooja had attended Jawed Habib’s seminar in Muzzafarnagar, Uttar Pradesh and was invited by him on to the stage dias for a haircut demonstration. While styling her hair, Habid spat on the woman’s hair, saying that when water is scarce, he uses his own saliva, which has “jaan”.

Defending the act of spitting then, Jawed Habib had issued a strangely worded apology, for hurting the sentiments of the people. “What do I say now? I want to say this straight from my heart – If you are hurt by my actions, then, forgive me. Saying ‘sorry’ from the bottom of my heart”, he had said in his Instagram video.

Habib further stated that he had spat on the lady’s hair to create some humour and engage the audience. The outrageous act of spitting on a woman’s hair was criticised strongly on social media.

According to the Republic TV report, Venkata Ravi, CEO of Habib’s company is also of opinion that the spitting act was solely meant to make people laugh. “He did not do anything intentionally. He personally apologised to everyone as it was a mistake from his side.”

Referring to the protests and demonstrations outside the Jawed Habib salons following the incident, the CEO stated that though everyone has a right to protest in a democratic country, the negative publicity and public outrage is causing a loss to their business and franchise partners. He said that over 20,000 people are employed under the Jawed Habib brand.

UP: History sheeters and gangsters Nahid Hasan, Rafiq Ansari get Samajwadi Party ticket, BJP calls it ‘Jinnawad’

The Samajwadi Party and RLD’s alliance has declared a list of MLA candidates for 29 seats for the upcoming assembly elections. The list features many controversial names. The list has 19 RLD and 10 SP candidates.

The Samajwadi Party has announced the name of Nahid Hasan for the Kairana seat. Hasan has multiple criminal cases against him and is called the mastermind behind the Hindu exodus that was seen in the city.

The BJP has stated that by again giving a ticket to the mastermind of the Hindu exodus in Kairana, the Samajwadi Party has displayed its ‘Jinnawad’.

Many BJP leaders and supporters have questioned the SP’s decision to give a ticket to Nahid Hasan. He has been accused of fraud in a land deal case. Hasan was also declared an absconder by a special court in Shamli.

It is notable here that Nahid Hasan is the sitting MLA from Kairana and has been accused in many cases. Nahid’s mother Tabassum was the former MP from the area. In February 2021, the UP Police had charged Tabassum Hasan, Nahid Hasan and 38 others under the Gangster Act.

Nahid Hasan, after absconding for a prolonged period of time, had finally surrendered in court in January 2020 and had stayed in jail for over a month before managing to get bail.

In 2019, a video of Nahid Hasan had gone viral where he was seen asking people in Kairana to economically boycott anyone associated with the BJP.

Rafiq Ansari

Meerut MLA Rafiq Ansari has been again made the Samajwadi Party candidate. He too has several pending criminal cases against him and has been notorious for giving death threats to another leader of his own party. In October 2021, a court in Meerut had ordered his arrest on the complaint of a person named Bundu Khan Ansari. The complainant had alleged that MLA Rafiq Ansari had sold off his lands through forged documents and had pocketed the money.

In November 2017, audio of Rafiq Ansari had gone viral where he was heard giving death threats to another SP leader who wanted a party ticket for the municipal elections. Ansari had also been a history-sheeter of Nauchandi police station in his early days.

Malayalam director Ali Akbar converts to Hinduism and becomes ‘Ramasimhan’, had quit Islam a month ago: Read details

Only a month after quitting Islam, Malayalam Director Ali Akbar has now officially reconverted to Hinduism. On the 10th of December, Ali Akbar had announced that he was leaving Islam and would be known as Ramasimhan henceforth. On Thursday, it was announced that he had formally reconverted.

In a Facebook post, Pratheesh Viswanath, Hindu activist and founder of Hindu Seva Kendra, informed that the Malayalam actor had reconverted to Hinduism. The pictures posted by Viswanath were captioned, “History repeats itself, Ali Akbar is now Ramasimhan”.

For the reconversion ceremony, the Director was accompanied by his wife Lucyamma.

Why Ali Akbar chose the name Ramasimhan after reconverting to Hinduism

While leaving Islam in December itself, Akbar had said that he would be known was Ramasimhan.

Ali Akbar had said, “Ramasimhan is a person who was killed while sticking to the culture of Kerala. Tomorrow Ali Akbar will be called Ram Singh. That’s the best name”.

Ramasimhan and his family were butchered by Islamists for converting to Hinduism from Islam in 1947. Ramasimhan, his brother Dayasimhan, Dayasimhan’s wife Kamala, their cook Raju Iyer and other members of the family were brutally butchered by Islamist Jihadists in Malaparamba, Malappuram district on 2nd August 1947, just two weeks before the independence.

Only a month ago, the Malayalam director had left Islam

Renowned Malayalam director Akbar had in December announced that he was leaving Islam protesting against those who had celebrated the tragic death of CDS General Bipin Rawat. Ali Akbar had then revealed this on Facebook, where he also stated that he and his family will have no religion henceforth.

Akbar had earlier posted a video on Facebook criticizing the Islamists who mocked the death of CDS Bipin Rawat. Akbar’s account was suspended for a month after the video received hateful comments on the platform. The director then opened another account and declared that he was leaving Islam. Akbar said, “Within five minutes of speaking out against those who put up emojis, the account was blocked. I can not accept it, I can not agree with it, so I’m leaving my religion. I or my family no longer have a religion. That is the decision.”

Ali Akbar informed that he took the decision to quit Islam after discussing the matter with his wife. ‘I am throwing away the dress I was born with’, he said.

Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi regrets PM Modi’s security breach, wishes him a long life during PM’s Covid-19 review meeting with CMs

A day after the supreme court had formed a committee to investigate the security lapse during PM Narendra Modi’s visit to Punjab, Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi has regretted the security breach incident and wished the PM a long life. He expressed this afterthought during a meeting of chief ministers called by the PM to take account of the current COVID-19 situations in the country on Thursday 13th January 2022.

Reportedly, Channi also recited a couplet in the meeting in which he said “Tum salamat raho qayamat take, aur khuda kare ki qayamat hi na ho” which means “may you be safe till the end of times, and may the God never end the times”.

Notably, Channi had entangled himself, his government, and his party with his conflicting statements soon after the PM’s security breach incident. Whlle several Congress leaders including his own deputy CM had acknowledged that there was a breach of PM’s security, he has been claiming there was no such breach and it was a minor incident. As recent as in the last week, he had gone on to say, “Where was the threat to his life? Nobody was within a kilometer of you. No stone was thrown, no bullet was fired, no slogans were raised.” Now, this expression of regret from him is seen as a step back after the Supreme court has appointed retired Justice Indu Malhotra to head the panel formed by the court to probe the matter.

Channi regrets the PM’s security breach

Prime Minister Modi had called a meeting with the chief ministers of the states to monitor the current situation of COVID-19 in India. In this meeting, while updating the PM about the situations in his state, Punjab CM Charanjit Singh Channi regretted the PM’s security breach incident that took place on 5 January 2022 when PM’s convoy was stuck on a flyover on his way to Hussainiwala in the Ferozepur district of Punjab where the PM was going to visit National Martyr’s Memorial and subsequently address a public meeting. Channi has said that he regrets the PM’s security breach incident that happened during the PM’s visit to Channi’s home state Punjab. He also said that he respects the PM and wishes him a long life.

Channi recites a couplet

Punjab State Congress President Navjyot Singh Siddhu is known for reciting couplets every now and then. Be it a TV show or a public meeting, Siddhu’s address is incomplete without the recital of at least a couplet either relevant or irrelevant to his topic. But this time it was Charanjit Singh Channi who recited a couplet to wish the PM a long life. Channi said, “Tum salamat raho qayamat take, aur khuda kare ki qayamat hi na ho” which means “may you be safe till the end of times, and may the God never end the times”.

Channi had earler quoted Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in one of his tweets two days after the incident. He used Sardar Patel’s quote to mock the PM. It said, “One who cares more about life than duty, he should not take a big responsibility in a country like India.”

It must be noted that prior to the formation of the investigation committee by the Supreme Court, it was the same Channi who had said about the PM’s security breach incident that “Where was the threat to his life? Nobody was within a kilometer of you. No stone was thrown, no bullet was fired, no slogans were raised. How can you say ‘I made it alive’! Such a sensitive statement from such a big leader. People voted you as Prime Minister – you should make responsible statements. You are saying we want to kill our Prime Minister.”

Did over 700 farmers die during anti-farm bill protests at Delhi borders? A detailed analysis of the data reveals the truth

A lot of noise has been made around the alleged deaths of protesting farmers who participated in farmer protests against now-repealed Agriculture Laws. One of the demands that the farmer unions have put forward in front of the union and state governments is to provide compensation to the families of the farmers who died during the protest. As per reports and claims made by the farmer unions, around 700-750 farmers allegedly died during the protests.

Last month, Rahul Gandhi had presented a list of farmers who died during the protests, after the union govt said that it has no such record. The Congress leader had also that the families of the farmers be provided compensation by the union govt. While the farmers and the Congress party are demanding compensation, the fact remains that none of the farmers died due to any police action. Now, a detailed analysis of the deaths show that the actual number of deaths at the protest sites is much lower. Moreover, around 700 deaths claimed by the farmer unions took place due to old age, diseases, accidents and other such reasons, and almost none of the deaths were directly linked to the farm bills or the protests against them.

There is a blog page that has kept the record of the farmers who have lost their lives during protests. Activist and investigative journalist Vijay Patel, who goes by the handle @vijaygajera, dug deep into the list and made some startling discoveries. Vijay wrote a long thread explaining how these deaths could be padded up with unrelated deaths, questionable suicides and Covid related deaths. Death is always unfortunate. But using someone’s death for political benefit is a new low. What Vijay discovered and OpIndia confirmed from the list, the actual number of people who died at protest sites and the number of people who have been added to the list of ‘700 hundred farmers who died during protests’ need some explanation.

First of all, the number 700 has been used by the opposition, farmer unions, propagandists, and left-leaning media to paint a bad picture of the union government. Congress has propagated on the alleged deaths of 700 farmers and used it as a political tool not only during the farmer protests but also after the laws were repealed by the central government.

Out of 702 deaths checked by Vijay, only 191 of them lost their lives at the Delhi border protest sites. 340 of them died after returning home from the protest sites. It is unclear on what basis the farmer unions connected these deaths to farmer protests. Just because these protesters were present at the protest sites at the Delhi border or somewhere else before their death, alleging they died during the protest does not make any sense.

Another 108 people lost their lives while on the way to the site of the protests or on the way back home. The reasons for such deaths included hit and run cases as well. Now the question is how someone dying in an accident can be eligible to be linked to farmer protests. Lastly, 63 lost their lives at local protests and other locations.

Drowned in the river but added to the list

A farmer identified as Sukhpal Singh was mentioned in the list. According to the post, Singh had participated in the protests at the Delhi border multiple times. He was at his native place at the time of death. As per the record, Singh was out in his field for inspection when he accidentally drowned in the Beas River. There is no explanation why his death was termed as the death of a protester while he died while working in his field back home.

Died while boarding train but found a place in the list

Another farmer identified as Gurlal Singh met with an unfortunate accident at Bahadurgarh Railway Station when he was trying to board the train while returning home. As per the news reports, he was trying to board the train when he slipped and got crushed by the train. Such accidents happen only when someone tries to board a moving train. Though it was not mentioned if the train was moving, the 47-year-old died at the railway station and not at the protest site.

Another protester identified as Parma Singh also died in a train accident. Singh allegedly fell off the train and died on the spot while returning from the Tikri border.

Another farmer identified as Jaswinder Singh died while returning from the Delhi border after protests were called off. He allegedly fell off a tractor and got crushed under it.

One protester identified as Sukhwinder Singh succumbed to injuries he had sustained in a road accident. He died during treatment at PGI Chandigarh.

The suicides that need investigation

There have been 40 reported suicides on the list. Many of these suicides need investigation. Vijay shared an image of a farmer who died allegedly of suicide. It was evident there were injury marks on his face.

The first reported suicide during the protests was of Sant Baba Ram Singh on December 16, 2020. He allegedly shot himself and left a suicide note in which he claimed he committed suicide to open the eyes of the government. However, there were a lot of questions around his death.

On December 17, 2020, it was reported that while talking to an anchor of a news channel, one nurse who identified herself as Amarjit Kaur from Chandigarh raised questions over the alleged suicide. In her statement, she said that it is impossible that Sant Ram Singh can commit suicide. She further added the handwriting on the suicide note that is being shown in the news reports does not match the handwriting she has seen. Amarjit Kaur said the person who encouraged people to come out of the problems and stay strong in life could not commit suicide. She said that he used to tell people that committing suicide is not an answer to anything, and they should not do it.

The second reported death was of Kulbir Singh, who committed suicide after coming back from the protest site. As per reports, he was under stress due to debt.

The third suicide committed by a farmer under the stress of increasing debt was reported in December 2020. Gurlabh Singh committed suicide after returning from protest sites. He was under debt of Rs 6 lakh.

Another farmer Ranjeet Singh also committed suicide in February 2021 after returning from the protest site. He was under heavy debt of Rs 15 lakh. Reports suggest he had received an attachment notice from the bank.

Lakhwinder Singh Comrade also died of suicide. He was under debt of Rs 15 lakh. Even the reports had mentioned he killed himself due to debt.

The missing case of Mukesh

On June 17, 2021, it was reported that a farmer identified as Mukesh was set ablaze allegedly by his fellow farmers at Tikri Border. The deceased person had consumed intoxicants with the protestors, who set him ablaze later after picking a fight. As per reports, casteist slurs were hurled towards Mukesh, after which he was set on fire. A video of him being set on fire had gone viral on social media, where one can hear casteist abuses being thrown at him before he was set ablaze.

Reasons of death

Over 307 people died of an unknown illness that could be Covid or any other disease that the protesters picked at the protest site or at their native place. 203 people died of a heart attack, the highest among known illnesses responsible for the deaths.

Vijay mentioned in a tweet that going by the national and state average of people dying of heart attack, these deaths should have been marked as natural causes, and the government could not be blamed for them.

The record of the deaths shows that apart from Heart Attacks and unknown causes, the farmers died due to hit and run cases, accidents, alleged suicides, and various illnesses like pneumonia, Covid-19, brain stroke, cold stroke, stomach infection etc. The list also includes 3 murders, but it does not include Lakhbir Singh, the Dalit Sikh who was brutally murdered by Nihang Sikhs at the Kundli border protest site in October 2021.

Most of the accident cases are road traffic accident cases, which are unfortunately common on Indian roads. The victims were hit by speeding vehicles or were crushed after they fell from the vehicles they were travelling. Some of the farmers were killed by tractors brought by farmers for the protests.

Elders were lured to protest sites

A Twitter user who goes by the handle Hindavi_Swarajy had published a thread in November 2021. In the thread, he described how people had come to his house to lure his grandfather to the protest site. He refused to let his 80+-year-old grandfather go for the protests, but other elders from his area went to the protests.

He added a total of seven people lost their lives at protests sites. He said, “Unfortunately, 7 old people died sitting in protest. Instead of taking their old & ill parents to the hospital, greedy uncles and aunties of my street sent them to sit-in protest. Now they are demanding compensation like vultures & blaming Modi. Waheguru will never forgive them.”

No one can justify deaths. They are always unfortunate and take away a lot from the families. However, using the deaths for political and anti-establishment propaganda is low that no one should be gone too.

Uttarakhand: Wasim Rizvi aka Jitendra Tyagi arrested in connection with Haridwar ‘Dharm Sansad’ hate speech case

0

The Uttarakhand Police on Thursday arrested Wasim Rizvi alias Jitendra Tyagi in connection with the Haridwar ‘Dharm Sansad’ hate speech case. Swatantra Kumar, SP City Haridwar, confirmed the development and said that Tyagi had participated in the three-day-long conclave organised in Haridwar in December 2021 and has been arrested for inciting violence.

Earlier in December, the Uttarakhand police had registered a case against Wasim Rizvi alias Jitendra Narayan Tyagi and others under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) for promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion.

“Taking cognizance of the video that is going viral on social media for spreading hatred by giving provocative speeches against a particular religion, a case has been registered against Wasim Rizvi alias Jitendra Narayan Tyagi,” the Uttarakhand police had said.

The Dharma Sansad, held at Ved Niketan Dham in Haridwar from December 17-20 was organised by Yati Narasimhanand Giri of the Juna Akhada, who is already under police scanner for making hate speeches and inciting violence against the Muslims. Several speakers at the event allegedly made inflammatory and provocative speeches, calling for the killing of people from the minority community.

It is pertinent to note that former Shia Waqf Board chief Wasim Rizvi had reverted to Hinduism by renouncing Islam in December last year. He converted to Hinduism in the presence of Mahant Yati Narasinghanand Giri at Dasna Devi temple in Ghaziabad. Rizvi was welcomed back into the faith of his ancestors in a series of rituals, after which he was named Jitendra Narayan Swami.

12 coaches of Guwahati-Bikaner Express derails in Jalpaiguri district in West Bengal, 5 killed

0

In a major train accident today, the Bikaner Guwahati Express derailed in Jalpaiguri in West Bengal in the evening. 12 coaches of the Bikaner Guwahati Express train (15633), which was going to Guwahati in Assam from Bikaner in Rajasthan, derailed at around 5 pm near New Maynaguri station in Jalpaiguri district.

According to reports, five passengers have been confirmed dead and the number of injured persons was 45 in the accident. However, the number can go up as the search and rescue work is still going on. As soon as the information about the incident was received, local people reached the spot and started relief work. Due to darkness, relief and rescue works are also getting affected. Issuing a statement, the Railways said, “12 coaches of the Guwahati-Bikaner Express train were derailed. DRM and ADRM have reached the spot. A medical van has also been sent.” Preliminary assessment suggests a possibility of a crack in the railway tracks, which might have caused the accident.

Five coaches of the train overturned in the accident among the 12 that were derailed. The speed of the train at the time of the accident was 40kmph. Visuals from the accident show several coaches lying sideways or overturned near the tracks, and at least one coach had climbed onto another coach.

Railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw informed that he was personally monitoring the situation for swift rescue operation. He also announced an increased ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh in case of death, Rs 1 lakh for grievous injuries and Rs 25 thousand for minor injuries. The injured are being taken to the Mainaguri and Jalpaiguri district hospitals.

The railway minister has stated from his Twitter handle, “In an unfortunate accident, 12 Coaches of Bikaner – Guwahati Exp. derailed near New Maynaguri (West Bengal) this evening. Personally monitoring the situation for swift rescue operations.” He has also said that he has briefed the PM about this accident. He tweeted, “Spoke with Hon’ble PM and apprised him about the rescue operations.”

PM Narendra Modi informed that he talked to the railway minister to take stock of the situation.

Railway Police and two NDRF teams from Siliguri launched a search and rescue operation, and most of the passengers from the derailed train have been evacuated. Captain Shashi Kiran, Chief Public Relations Officer, NW Railways has said that “The train was en route Guwahati; seeing the enormity of the accident, an inquiry has been ordered.”

Indian Railways have diverted several trains due to the accident.

West Bengal CM expresses concern

Meanwhile, West Bengal CM Mamata Bannerji who was in a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the Covid-19 situation left the meeting for some time and issued instructions to the district administration for relief and rescue work. She also expressed her concern on Twitter, saying, “Deeply concerned to hear about the tragic accident of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express in Maynaguri. Senior Officers of the State Government, DM/SP/IG North Bengal are supervising rescue and relief operations. Those injured will receive medical attention, as early as possible.”

Twitter blinks, restores Kashmiri journalist Aarti Tikoo’s account after locking her for raising alarm over death threats to her brother

A week after Journalist Aarti Tikoo Singh dragged Twitter to the Delhi High Court for blocking her account, the social media giant has written to Tikoo’s lawyer Mukesh Sharma informing that her account has been restored. Twitter has also asked The New Indian co-founder to withdraw the petition or request the High Court to close it. According to Twitter, the case has become infructuous after they restored the account. The Twitter account of Aarti Tikoo Singh was blocked after she had tweeted about threats her brother was receiving from Islamists.

In December last year, Tikoo had posted a Twitter space video in which her brother Sahil Tikoo had participated and was referred to as an ‘Indian Agent’ among other accusations levelled against him. “My brother who lives in Srinagar, being openly threatened by jihadi terrorists sitting in Kashmir-India & their handlers in Pakistan, UK & US. Is anyone watching? Are we sitting ducks waiting to be shot dead by Islamists or will you crack down on them?”, she had tweeted.

Following this, Twitter had locked the journalist’s account, issuing her a notice that she could unlock her account only if she deleted the tweet about her brother getting threats. Twitter, for some odd reason, decided that the tweet raising alarm over her brother getting threats violated their community standards.

In the notice, Twitter had said, “You may not promote violence against, threaten or harass other people on the basis of race, national origin, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious identity, religious affiliation, age, disability or serious disease”.

On January 6, Tikoo had dragged Twitter to the Delhi High Court saying that her rights under the constitution were violated and Twitter was siding with Islamist terrorists by locking her account. The plea filed through advocate Mukesh Sharma stated that the manner in which her brother was targeted by some participants was reminiscent of January 1990. However, she was shocked to see that Twitter served her a notice for this Tweet saying it went against their Rules on Hateful Conduct, the petition said.

The petition also added that Twitter’s action had violated her rights under Articles 14, 19 and 21 of the Constitution of India, and demanded that the decision of the social media company be quashed. The Delhi High Court in response had issued a notice on January 11 to Twitter and the government challenging the social media giant’s decision to lock her account. Justice Rekha Palli had also requested a response from the Centre and Twitter Inc., while also providing three weeks to file a counter-affidavit in the issue.

Twitter is known for its extreme left-wing bias, which blocks and suspends right-wing voices even at smallest matters, but refuses to take action against leftists and Islamists users. But the example of Aarti Tkoo shows that if someone stands by their ground and takes legal action against the company instead of complying with its demands, the company may be forced to reverse its anti-right wing actions.

In 2020, Twitter had locked the account of scientist and columnist Dr Anand Ranganathan on the platform for posting a Quranic verse. In his tweet, Dr Anand Ranganathan had quoted a verse from Quran which stated that those who abuse Allah and His Messenger (Prophet), Allah has cursed them in this world and the hereafter and prepared for them a humiliating punishment. The verse is mentioned in Quran, but despite that Twitter had blocked his account saying it is against the rules of the platform and is ‘hateful conduct’. However, later Twitter restored his account and had tendered an apology to Dr Anand Ranganathan.

In this regard, it can be added that OpIndia was once forced to delete an editorial cartoon last year after the company locked the account. While OpIndia had appealed the decision, a decision was taken to delete the cartoon to get the account restored. In hindsight, it can be said that OpIndia also could have gone to court, and perhaps Twitter would have blinked then also if it was done. But it would have taken time, and OpIndia couldn’t have afforded to keep it’s Twitter handle idle for months while the matter is heard by a court. By deleting cartoon also the portal suffered a loss, because it resulted in the loss of followers as the Twitter algorithm put OpIndia as one of the handles that broke its rules.

It is interesting to note that while Twitter blinked in the case of Aarti Tikoo, the company had taken a different stand in the case of Supreme Court lawyer Sanjay Hegde. Twitter had permanently suspended his Twitter account, and when he had approached the Delhi High Court, the court had advised him to live without Twitter. The company had said that it can suspend the account of any individual user found in breach of their service agreement and that it has a “contractual obligation” to do so. The micro-blogging platform further stated that it is not in any way obliged to further the freedom of speech and expression guaranteed under the Indian Constitution.
