Bangladesh: More Hindu temples attacked, petrol bombs hurled in fresh Islamist attack in Feni district

Amidst the ongoing violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh over false allegations of blasphemy, radical Islamists attacked Hindus in the Feni district in the Chittagong Division of the country.

Videos have emerged on social media where an Islamist mob attacking Hindus have been spotted.

Radical Islamists unleash terror in Feni distrct

BDNews24 reported that the radical Islamists had attacked the Hindu community in Feni district after the latter had taken out demonstrations against the vandalism of Durga pandals and Hindu idols in Chandpur, Cumilla and Noakhali districts in the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh. During the attack orchestrated between 4:30 pm and 11:30 pm on Saturday (October 16), everal temples were looted and vandalised.

Reportedly, the President of the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, Shukdeb Nath Tapan, was attacked by the same Islamist mob near the Joykali temple. The Hindu community was preparing to lead a march from the said temple to the old Dhaka-Chattogram Highway’s Trunk Road. Islamists, who had gathered near Trunk Road Bara Masjid attacked the Hindus with sticks and brickbats. In a bid to control the law and order situation, the cops deployed a large team in the Feni town. They resorted to firing tear gas shells to disperse the unruly mob.

According to Officer-in-Charge (Feni Model Police Station) Nizam Uddin, more than 40 people were injured during the clashes. They were then rushed to the Feni General Hospital. According to Shukdeb, the district administration took time in sending in Border Guard Bangladesh (BGF)and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). The attackers torched a passenger vehicle at Kalipal, hurled crude bombs, vandalised a fire truck and attacked Hindu temples such as JoyKali, Jagannathbari, Kalibari Temple and Gaziganj Ashram.

As per eyewitnesses, the student wing of the Jamaat-e-Islami named Islami Chhatra Shibir was among the perpetrators. Local activists of the Awami League and its student wing Bangladesh Chhatra League tried to resist the attackers. “We’ve got reports about vandalism of shops. We are working on it,” stated Inspector Monir Hossain (Feni Model Police Station)

Violence in Bangladesh against Hindus under the garb of blasphemy

Brutal attacks, vandalism, looting, and arson had returned to haunt Hindus in Bangladesh’s Noakhali district, as close to 150 households were reportedly attacked and at least three killed in a violent clash on Wednesday (October 13). A day later, a frenzied mob of radical Islamists attacked the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temple in the Noakhali district in the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh. The Bangladesh unit of ISKCON lamented that the sculpture of its founder, AC Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, was burnt down during the arson attack on the temple.

The violence and vandalism took place after a Facebook rumour claiming ‘insult to Quran’ at a Durga Puja pandal went viral. Videos emerged on social media where a mob of enraged Muslims were seen pelting stones and vandalising makeshift Durga Puja pandals and attacking Hindu families in Bangladesh’s Chandpur area. A social media user from Bangladesh stated that the Islamic mob was calling for the burning of a local ISKCON temple. Bangladeshi social media users had stated that under the guise of attacks, rampant loot and molestation of women have also taken place. 2 persons have been found dead in the Chandpur area.

Following the incident, Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered the criminals, behind spreading communal attacks and propaganda, to be identified and punished as an example. Meanwhile, back in New Delhi, the external affairs ministry said that it was in touch with the high commission officials and noted the strict action be taken by the Bangladesh government. Since the incident, the Bangladesh police have made over 100 arrests and the probe is still underway.

Disturbing visuals have emerged from Bhopal’s Bajaria Police Station area where a car rammed into devotees during the Durga Puja idol Visarjan.

In the video above, one can see a grey i10 is driving at top speed in reverse gear, injuring people. Two people have been injured as per reports. The police has said that the driver will be nabbed soon.

One person has lost his life and six have been injured. Elderly people, women and children were also part of the procession. The incident took place on Saturday late night at 11:15 PM.

This comes just days after devotees at Durga Visarjan procession were crushed under a speeding car in Chhattisgarh leaving at least one person dead. At least 20 people were left injured in the incident. A chilling video of the disturbing incident that has gone viral on the internet showed a speeding car running over an unsuspecting group of people gathered for Durga Idol immersion on Raigad Road in Pathalgaon, Jaspur.

Scroll, The Swaddle columnist justifies attack on ISKCON temple and Hindu devotees in Bangladesh by Islamists

Columnist with leftist portal Scroll on Saturday justified the attack on ISKCON temple and the Hindu devotees in Bangladesh. Taking to Twitter, Genesia Alves on said, ‘As you sow’ while referring to the attack on Hindus and the temple by Islamists.

Alves quoted a tweet by ISKCON where they talked about the temple in Bangladesh’s Noakhali and the devotees being attacked brutally. The religious organisation also urged the Sheikh Hasina led government of Bangladesh to ensure safety of Hindus in the Muslim majority nation.

However, while quoting the same, Alves justified the brutal attack by stating ‘as you sow’ as part of the phrase, ‘as you sow, so shall you reap’, thereby insinuating that the Hindus in Bangladesh are being attacked and killed because ‘they sowed’ it and brought it upon themselves. The phrase, ‘as you sow, so shall you reap’ has its origin in the Bible and speaks about retribution and deserved consequences of the actions.

This drew lot of ire on social media where netizens questioned The Scroll columnist on what exactly did the ISKCON temple and other Hindu devotees had ‘sown’ to deserve the brutality unleashed upon them.

However, hours later, Alves put up another ‘clarification’ tweet claiming that she was ‘getting hate’ for her tweet justifying violence against Hindus in Bangladesh, and added ‘context’ to the same. She claimed that the it was because of the so-called hate minorities in India are subjected to, the same is being unleashed upon Hindus in Bangladesh because an ‘eye for an eye’.

Scroll and The Swaddle columnist not only justified violence unleashed upon Hindus in Bangladesh by an Islamist mob for celebrating the Hindu festival Vijayadashami/Dussehra but also gave ‘context’ to the same justification.

Alves has since reportedly deleted original tweet suggesting deserved retribution and protected her Twitter account.

However, Genesia Alves’ podcast account has extended support and vowed to ‘rip off the faces’ of ‘andhbhakts’ for ‘going after Genesia.

ISKCON Bangladesh violence

On Friday, October 15, the day of Vijayadashami and Dussehra, a frenzied mob of about 400-500 Islamists attacked the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) temple in the Noakhali district in the Chittagong Division of Bangladesh. The attack left two people dead. The incident took place after a Facebook rumour about ‘insult to Quran’ at Durga Puja pandal went viral. Two more Nihang Sikhs arrested in Singhu border lynching case after they were felicitated by fellow Nihangs

Two more Nihang Sikhs have been arrested in connection with the brutal lynching of a man at the farmer protest site at Singhu border. According to reports, the two men Bhagwant Singh and Govind Singh were arrested after they surrendered before the Haryana police at the Singhu-Kundli border.

A video that has emerged on social media shows that ahead of the arrest, the two Nihang Sikhs were felicitated by fellow Nihangs with garlands, and a large group of Nihangs in their traditional blue attire followed them in a procession, shouting slogans and chants.

With this, the total number of arrests in the Lakhbir Singh lynching case has gone up to four. On Friday, Saravjeet Singh had claimed responsibility for the murder and surrendered to the police, after which he was sent to seven-day police custody on Saturday.

Earlier today another accused Narain Singh was arrested by Punjab police in his native village in Amritsar district. He had surrendered to the police after he was felicitated at the local gurudwara in his village, where he was presented with a garland of currency notes. He confessed before the police that angry after being told that Lakhbir Singh insulted the Guru Granth Sahib, he had cut off his leg, and as a result, Lakhbir bled to death.

On Friday, Dalit Sikh farm worker Lakhbir Singh was brutally lynched by the members of Nihang Sikh community over allegations of blasphemy. His one hand was chopped off, his legs were cut, and his body was hanging from a metal police barricade near the main stage of farmer protests at the Singhu border in Haryana.

NSG deployed at Indian Air Force Bases in Srinagar and Jammu to provide protection against drone attacks

India’s elite counter-terrorism commando force, National Security Guard (NSG) has been deployed at the Indian Air Force bases stations n Srinagar and Jammu to provide anti-drone security cover to the two stations. The deployment has been made after the Jammu Air Force station faced a drone attack in June this year.

These two are sensitive IAF facilities in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, close to the Pakistan border. Notably, the aerial distance of Jammu civil airport to the international border is only 14 km. The runway and the air traffic control is under command of the IAF.

NSG Director General M A Ganapathy announced the decision on Saturday during a programme organized on the occasion of 37th raising day of NSG held at NSG headquarter at Manesar in Haryana. He said the NSG’s bomb disposal teams had neutralised improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and tiffin bombs, including those that were brought by drones from Pakistan and dropped in Indian territory.

The drone has emerged as a new weapon to be used by Pakistan based terrorists, the first such attack on any such security installations in India was reported on the intervening night of June 26-27. Two unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) operated from across the border (Pakistan) dropped two improvised explosive devices weighted 3 kg and 5 kg each at IAF station in Jammu. Two airmen were apparently injured and the explosion also partially damaged a portion of a building. The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of Lashkar-e-Taiba, was suspected to be behind this drone attack. Chinese drones were used in the attack and it looked like a conspiracy of Pakistan to hit security installations of India.

On the next three days after the attack, drones were spotted at Kunjwani and army stations at Sunjwan and Kaluchak army station areas around Jammu. Right after this incident, NSG and NIA were roped for the security update and investigation to counter any drone attack in future.  

Terming drones as a new security challenge, Ganapathy said that drones are an easy way to create mischief, to drop bombs and payload like weapons and ammunition. Ganapathy said that NSG is enhancing its counter-terrorism profile to meet security challenges.

In this context, he informed that NSG was deployed at the Srinagar and Jammu IAF stations to strengthen security in the wake of the drone attacks. He said that anti-drone system is working successfully. It is believed that NSG will continue to protect the Air Force installations till a full-fledged and independent counter-drone system is deployed at the bases.

The NSG has one of the most advanced anti-drone equipment, radars, jammers and drone killer guns to detect and shoot suspicious drones.

Actor Mahima Chaudhry, who made her Bollywood debut with Pardes, has made explosive revelations about what women had to endure in the Indian film industry during the time when she was actively pursuing her acting career.

Divulging sordid details of the inner workings of Bollywood in her interview with the Hindustan Times, Mahima said, “The minute you started dating someone, people would write you off because they only wanted a virgin who had not kissed. If you were dating someone, it was like, ‘Oh! She’s dating!’. If you were married, then forget it, you career was over, and if you had a child, it was like absolutely over.”

However, Mahima Chaudhry acknowledged that the Indian Film industry has changed dramatically since then for female actors. She reckons women are now in a better position than they were a decade or so ago and did not have to submit themselves to the demands of others.

“I think the industry is getting to a position where female actors are also calling the shots. They are getting better roles to play, better pay, endorsements, they’re in a great and much powerful position. They have a longer shelf life than before,” she said.

Mahima also spoke about how the audience has been supportive of the rise of female actors to the position where they currently are. The actor, which was also known for her role in the movie ‘Dhadkan’, said people are accepting female actors in different kinds of roles these days. She said earlier actors had to hide their personal lives from the oppressive glare of media but now, they can continue with their daily lives business as usual with media analysing their personal and professional lives threadbare.

“Now, people are accepting women in different kinds of roles, even romantic ones post them becoming a mother or wife. Their personal life is now celebrated. Even men used to hide their personal lives in the past. But now all of that has changed,” Mahima asserted.

Mahima started her Bollywood career with the movie ‘Pardes’ in the year 1997. ‘Pardes’ also featured  Shah Rukh Khan and Apurva Agnihotri in the lead roles. The movie was directed by Subhash Ghani and was a huge hit.

Mahima married Bobby Mukherji in the year 2006 and gave birth to a daughter in 2007. The couple, however, got divorced in 2013.

Security forces gunned down two Islamic terrorists including Lashkar-e-Taiba commander Umar Mushtaq Khandey at the Pampore area of Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday. IGP of Kashmir zone Vijay Kumar confirmed security forces having successfully eliminated two terrorists who were holed up in a three-storey concrete building at Drangbal. The second terrorist was identified as Shahid Khurshid, a resident of Chanapora in Srinagar. 

A joint team of police, Army and CRPF successfully neutralised the terrorists after an 8-hour-operation. Arms and ammunition were also recovered from them.

“Umar Mustaq Khandey who martyred our two colleagues SgCT Mohammad Yousf and Ct Suhail Ahmad in Baghat Srinagar while they were having tea has been neutralised in Drangbal. Amongst various other crimes of the terrorists, this stands out as most unforgivable,” Jammu and Kashmir police informed.

Suhail Ahmed of Logripora Aishmuqam and Mohammad Yousuf of Zurhama Kupwara were selection grade constables who were killed by Khandey a six-second attack at Barzulla in Srinagar in February this year. A video had also gone viral where this slain terrorist was seen spraying bullets on the back of both unarmed policemen.

Jammu and Kashmir police said that it is committed to hunting down these terrorists who try to create fear among the masses and spread mischief and tumult in the valley. Such elements and their name should be excised from society. According to the police, so far 13 terrorists have been killed in nine different encounters in Jammu and Kashmir. “We have neutralised three out of five terrorists of Srinagar City within less than 24 hours,” the police said.

Khandey’s name figured in the list of top 10 militants who the security forces were targeting since the hit list was released by the police in August this year.

About the operation, the IGP said that a joint team of the Jammu and Kashmir Police Indian army cordoned off the area on getting information about the presence of terrorists. But as security forces zeroed in on the spot, terrorists opened heavy on security forces. Security forces have launched a massive operation following the targeted killings of minority civilians in Jammu and Kashmir.

At the advent of the heinous killing of the Dalit labourer at the Singhu-Kundli border on Friday, October 15, another victim has come forth to reveal similar atrocities meted out at him by the Nihang Sikhs at a farmer protest site.

Recounting how he had also once become victim to the angst of a Nihang Sikh, a 24-year-old Shekhar told India Today that he and a friend were driving to work on April 12 when they got stuck in a big traffic jam near the Delhi-Haryana border in Kundli. He requested a traffic cop on duty to allow him to pass through the barricades because he was receiving continuous calls from his employer at TDI Mall. He also urged the same of a Nihang traffic officer. But, his request somehow enraged the latter, who pulled out his sword and started assaulting Shekhar.

Shekhar was allegedly attacked three times by the Nihang man, resulting in a wound on his left hand that bled profusely. He was quickly rushed to the hospital for treatment, where he received 28-30 stitches in his hand.

An FIR was registered at Kundli police station. The accused was identified as one Manpreet.

Shekhar said that though it has been several months since the incident occurred his left hand still does not function properly. He has lost his job and there is nobody to support his family, rued Shekhar.

This episode has an uncanny resemblance to the brutal lynching of Lakhbir Singh, who was killed on Friday, October 15, where farmers have been camping for months in protest of the three agricultural laws. 

Kundli border murder by Nihang Sikhs

Lakhbir Singh’s brutally mutilated body, with his hands and legs severed, was reportedly found suspended from a police barricade. The autopsy report of Lakhbir Singh confirmed that 22 wounds were found on his body, of which ten were very large and deep.

He died due to deep wounds and excessive bleeding, read the report. Marks of being tied with a rope and dragged along the ground were also found on his body. Lakhbir Singh’s arm was completely severed while his leg was partially severed, revealed the post mortem.

Haryana police had arrested Nihang Sarabjit after he surrendered claiming responsibility for killing Lakhbir Singh. Sarabjit belonged to a Nihang group, Nirvair Khalsa-Udna Dal.

Before surrendering to the police, Nihang Sarabjit had appeared before the media and taken full responsibility for the barbaric act. He said that when he had found someone desecrating a Sikh sacred book he did what he deemed fit. When the reporters asked him whether he had any remorse over his action, Sarabjit had answered in the negative.

While it may be difficult to forget the scars of this heinous act, this is only one of several recent incidents in which Nihang Sikhs have ruthlessly mutilated and killed people in recent times.

In April last year, a group of five Nihangs, armed with swords and iron rods, had attacked two policemen and chopped off the hands of ASI Harjeet Singh.

Two weeks after the aforementioned incident, a Nihang Sikh identified as Tej Singh allegedly attacked two locals in Mandayali village in Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh over a small argument. While one victim’s four fingers were chopped off, the other received severe injuries on the head.

As Bangladesh continues to convulse with a violent spate of attacks against Hindu temples and minority Hindus, Islamists on Twitter recently descended on the timeline of Bangladeshi actor Rafiath Rashid Mithila for posting a tweet wishing Shubho Bijoya.

On the occasion of Vijay Dashami or Shubho Bijoya on October 15, Mithila had shared a picture of herself dressed in traditional Bengali attire. Along with the picture, Mithila wished Shubho Bijoya and said that there will be grand celebrations next year as well.

But this did not sit well with radical Islamists on Twitter, who responded with abuses and insulting remarks for the actor for expressing her greetings on a Hindu festival. Many of the Islamists who could not fathom the fact that the actor had posted a picture wishing Hindus on a Hindu festival, proceeded to character assassinate her. She was called a prostitute by a majority of the radicals who believed in Islamic supremacism and considered greeting extended on festivals belonging to other communities as ‘haram’.

A Twitter user responded to the actor’s tweet by calling her a disgrace to Bangladesh and suggested her to stay in India “if she loved Hinduism so much”.

Islamists in Bangladesh target Hindu temples, pandals and devotees after troublemongers place Quran at the knee of Goddess Durga

The online attack against actor Rafiath Rashid comes hot on the heels of a slew of attacks against Hindus and Hindu places of worship in Bangladesh. Earlier today, two Hindus were killed in the latest spate of violence that took place in the southern town of Begumganj as more than 200 protesters attacked a temple when Hindu devotees were performing the last rituals on the final day of Durga Puja.

The horrifying bout of attacks against Hindus in the Muslim-majority nation started over the alleged desecration of the Quran, the central religious text of Islam. After a video of a copy of the Quran placed on the knee of the goddess Durga’s idol at a puja pandal in Cumilla surfaced, Islamists attacked pandals and temples across the country. From temples in Chandpur’s Hajiganj to Chattogram’s Banshkhali, from Chapainawabganj’s Shibganj to Cox’s Bazar’s Pekua, Islamists ran riot, vandalising pandals and temples, and attacking Hindus devotees.

Shibu Prasad Dutta, the general secretary of Cumilla Mahanagar Puja Udjapon Committee, informed that someone placed a copy of the Quran at a Durga Puja pavilion in Nanua Dighir Par early in the morning when no one was watching, as a deliberate act to create a rumour.

However, it was not the first incidence of violence against the minority Hindus in the country, triggered by some stray social media posts. Similar to Pakistan, Hindus in Bangladesh have also witnessed unbridled attacks from the majority of Muslims. For decades, the Hindu community in Bangladesh have been facing systematic persecution at the hands of the radical Islamists in the country.

In March this year, over 80 houses of Hindus in the village of Sunamganj, Bangladesh were attacked and vandalized by the supporters of Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam. The attack was planned after a young Hindu man criticized Joint-Secretary General Maulana Mufti Mamunul Haque in a Facebook post as reported by Dhaka Tribune.

Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Rakesh Tikait had made yet another controversial statement where he claimed that the Singhu Border lynching case is a conspiracy of the government to defame the farmers’ movement. Tikait also accused the government of provoking the murder of Lakhbir Singh at the main farmer protest site at Singhu Border.

Rakesh Tikait told the ABP news, “This murder is a conspiracy to defame the farmers’ movement. Farmer organizations have nothing to do with this killing. Whatever happened on the Singhu border, it happened because of the provocation of the government.”

On October 15, a dead body was found hanging on the Singhu-Kundli border at the farmer protests site. The man was identified as a 35-years-old Lakhbir Singh resident of Village Cheema Khurd, district Jalandhar. According to reports, the man’s right wrist was chopped off, his legs were cut, and the body was hung to a barricade at the Kundli border farmers’ protest site.

The FIR filed in the case said that a police inspector reached the site with a team and discovered the man’s body with only undergarment on and with mutilated hands and legs. The man was strung to a police barricade. The police were informed by the locals that Nihang Sikhs had chopped off a hand of the man, who was later identified as Lakhbir Singh and hung him to a nearby scaffolding.

The FIR also mentioned that there was a huge crowd of Nihang community members present at the place. However, none of them helped the police in their investigation and instead, protested against the police for removing the body of the decedent from the scaffolding.

According to reports, the incident took place at around 3.30 in the morning. A video of the incident went viral on social media where the severely injured victim was seen lying helpless on the ground with some angry Nihangs surrounding him. The man’s chopped hand was also seen lying next to him.

So far two accused in the case have been arrested, Sarabjit Singh and Narain Singh. Incidentally, Narain Singh was felicitated at the Gurudwara in his village in Punjab today and was presented with a garland of money, after which he was arrested by Punjab Police.
