Kabul airport attack: Death toll rises to 103 including 13 US service members, Islamic State Khorasan Province claims responsibility

Amid the chaos outside the Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul as thousands of Afghans are still waiting outside the airport to leave the country, two explosions have been reported from near the airport. At least 13 deaths and several injuries have been reported from the blasts, including children and women.

Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid informed that at least 52 people have been wounded in the two explosions. Terming the bombings as a terror attack, he said that the Taliban are committed to the international community and will not allow terrorists to use Afghanistan as a base for their operations. He also added that the Taliban had informed the US about possible terrorist groups such as ISIS.

The first incident reportedly took place near the Abbey gate of the airport. Minutes later, a second explosion was reported from the Baron Hotel near Kabul airport. Visuals from the spot show a number of persons, dead or injured, lying in the ground covered with blood.

Three American troopers were reportedly injured in the first blast near the Abbey gate of the airport.

John Kirby, the Press Secretary for the United States Department of Défense, tweeted confirming the incident after the first explosion. “We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul airport.  Casualties are unclear at this time.  We will provide additional details when we can,” he posted on Twitter today.

According to reports, the explosion was caused by ISIS suicide bombers who detonated an IED near the Abbey gate of the Kabul airport and near the Barron hotel. Gunfire also has been reported at the site after the explosion. Gunfire also has been reported after the explosions.

Earlier CNN had quoted one US official saying that there are some injuries among the Afghans outside the airport, however it was not known if any American was injured.

After the incidents, the US Embassy in Kabul issued a security alert asking US citizens to avoid travelling to the airport and avoid the airport gates. They advised US citizens who are at the Abbey Gate, East Gate, or North Gate of the airport should leave immediately.

The incident comes after Australia, the US and UK had issued alerts to their citizens advising not to go to the airport, warning possible terror attack. People outside the airport had been advised to leave the area immediately as there were concerns of violence from an ISIS affiliate group.

Update

The death toll from the Kabul Airport Attack has risen to 85, including 13 US service members and 72 Afghan civilians, some reports suggest. Other reports say that the death toll stands at 90 Afghan civilians and 13 US service members. Islamic State Khorasan Province, the regional affiliate of ISIS, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Afghan politician who claimed she was deported by Indian authorities had failed to produce valid documents, say govt officials

0

The Afghan MP Rangina Kargar, who claimed on August 26 that she was deported from the IGI airport two hours after reaching Delhi and was sent back by the same airline to Istanbul, had failed to produce valid visa documents, government officials confirmed on Thursday, August 26.

According to news agency ANI, the government officials said that Kargar was not allowed to move outside the IGI airport as she could neither show any document of her medical treatment in India nor did she have any document of reference from the Afghanistan Embassy.

Afghan woman MP claims she was deported by Indian authorities

Rangina Kargar, a member of the Afghan parliament, had arrived at the national capital’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on August 20 from Turkey. She was not allowed to enter the country as immigration officials asked her to wait. Later, on August 26, the Afghan MP claimed she was deported to Istanbul from the IGI airport two hours after she had reached Delhi.

The member of the Wolesi Jirga representing the Faryab province had then claimed that she holds a diplomatic/official passport that facilitates visa-free travel under a reciprocal arrangement with India.

She had further added that she was not given any reason for her deportation and believes it was probably related to the changed political situation in Kabul.

OpIndia reported earlier in the day how the Afghan MP had not travelled into India in any of the evacuation flights that are being operated by the Indian Air Force and Air India under Operation Devi Shakti. Instead, she chose to fly directly from Turkey via Dubai.

It is worth noting that Rangina Kargar has been living in Canada already, where she has applied for political asylum. Last year, Kargar had travelled to the US on a political passport seeking asylum.

From the US, she moved to Canada, where she was seeking asylum. The Afghan lawmakers had accused Rangina of receiving her salary and other cash privileges even as she sought asylum. Apparently, she took salary by marking present in the attendance book of the house despite her absence for over 14 months.

Quran is WhatsApp University? It is if this Radio Mirchi RJ is to be believed

On Thursday, Radio Mirchi RJ Sayema ended tieing herself up in the knots on Twitter after she was confronted with facts about the inherent nature of intolerance in Islam against non-believers or ‘kafirs’.

It all began when Sayema, who has a complicated relationship with facts and logic, took to Twitter to rant against lyricist, poet, and screenwriter Manoj Muntashir over his tweet about his upcoming YouTube video exposing Mughal emperors.

In a clip of the video that the poet shared, Manoj Muntashir was seen asking how can we Indians accept the blatant distortion of our own heritage. In the video, he asked how invaders, plunderers who killed thousands of Indians, can be celebrated as heroes. The poet also termed the Mughals as “glorified dacoits” and asked people to recognise India’s own heritage and stop glorifying barbarians and plunderers as heroes.

The video posted by Muntashir triggered several “liberal-secular” intellectuals, who then went on to cancel the poet for speaking about the barbarity of Mughal invaders against native Indians. Expectedly, Sayema, who has a history of whitewashing crimes committed by the Islamists, had a problem with Munatashir’s video.

The controversial radio jockey abused the renowned poet by calling him a “bigot” and declaring that bigotry had nothing to do with education. “In fact if you are educated and a bigot, it’s a deadly cocktail,” tweeted Sayema.

However, Sayema’s tweet targeting Manoj Muntashir over his video caught the attention of netizens, who exposed her dubiousness over the issue of freedom of speech. Social media users schooled Sayema, saying Manoj Muntashir had every right to express his views on the issue and suggested that the controversial RJ counter him with facts instead of launching denigrate attacks.

Scientist and Professor Anand Ranganathan did not leave a chance to expose Sayema’s chicanery. In response to hate-filled tweets by Sayema, Prof Anand Ranganathan put out verses from Islamic texts that demand unleashing violence on non-believers of Islam and polytheists. Anand Ranganathan, known for his meticulous research and strict adherence to facts, put out three verses in Quran to help Sayema realise that Islam is inherent with texts that prescribe violence against non-Muslims.

The three verses quoted by Prof Ranganathan were:

Surah 4 (An-Nisa) Verse 56:

Indeed, those who disbelieve in Our verses – We will drive them into a fire. Every time their skins are roasted through, We will replace them with other skins so they may taste the punishment. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted in Might and Wise.

Surah 98 (Al-Bayyinah) Verse 6:

Indeed, they who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture and the polytheists will be in the fire of Hell, abiding eternally therein. Those are the worst of creatures.

Surah 4 (An-Nisa) Verse 34:

Men are in charge of women by (right of) what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in (the husband’s) absence what Allah would have them, guard. But those (wives) from whom you fear arrogance – (first) advise them; (then if they persist), forsake them in bed; and (finally) strike them. But if they obey you (once more), seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand.

In response to Anand Ranganathan’s tweets, Sayema tweeted again, thanking him for reinforcing what she had written. But, in a hurry to give a “befitting reply” to the scientist, Sayema ended up calling Anand Ranganathan an “educated bigot”, too.

Now, within a span of an hour, RJ Sayema had ended up declaring two of the most articulate public speakers and intellectuals – Manoj Muntashir and Prof Anand Ranganathan as “bigots”.

Prof Anand Ranganathan confronted the controversial RJ yet again, asking her whether she meant that reading the verses from Quran induced bigotry. The scientist also asked her whether she had read the holy book herself, from which Prof Ranganathan had quoted the verses.

“Are you condemning the words of Allah,” Prof Ranganathan asked Sayema, who called him a “bigot” for referring to verses from Quran.

The JNU Professor also warned the Radio Mirchi RJ to delete her tweets against Islam, saying that a fatwa would be issued against her. He also expressed fear that “Sar Tun Se Juda” or the beheading gangs would hound her for the tweets she had put out.

As another social media user highlighted how Sayema had ended up calling her own religious text a source of “bigotry”, Prof Anand Ranganathan once again urged Sayema to delete the tweet as it could cause danger to her. Prof Anand Ranganathan quoting another verse from Quran (33:57) that read, “Those who abuse Allah and His messenger, Allah has cursed them in this world and the hereafter and prepared for them a humiliating punishment”.

Sayema, who had already fallen into the trap of Prof Anand Ranganathan and ended exposing herself, did not know how to save her face from the embarrassment. So, in a quintessential “liberal” way, Sayema put out a response saying that Prof Anand Ranganathan had acquired knowledge of the Quran from WhatsApp university.

Rather than responding to facts put out by Prof Anand Ranganathan that shed light on the Islamic verses that promoted violence against the non-believers, Sayema began hurling personal abuses. However, in doing so, she ended up referring to the Islamic text of the Quran to a WhatsApp university, a colloquial term for the source of fake news on the internet.

Despite Sayema indulging in name-calling, Prof Anand Ranganathan provided the controversial RJ with another chance to prove that the verses he had quoted were not part of the Quran. Prof Ranganathan asked her to prove from sources from whichever university that she was comfortable that disproved his claims.

Sayema, who until now was putting at least some defence of Islam, ran away from the conversation as soon as she was asked to put out facts to disapprove Prof Ranganathan’s tweets. Since then, she is nowhere to be found on Twitter.

As Sayema could not provide a credible explanation to Prof Ranganathan’s questions, the scientist has now urged social media users and listeners of her show to ask her to quote verse 4:34 in her show next time.

West Bengal: 2 arrested in Kolkata for trying to sell radioactive material, could be worth Rs 4,250 Cr

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on Wednesday arrested two persons from Kolkata in possession of around 250 grams of suspected Californium, a synthetic radioactive material that is used in nuclear reactors.

Sailan Karmakar (41) and Asit Ghosh (49) both residents of Hooghly district in West Bengal were caught near the NSCBI airport near Kolkata. Sharing information on the arrest, a police officer said, “Four ash-coloured stones weighing around 250 grams were seized from the accused.”

“Preliminary enquiry revealed that it could be Californium. They were trying to sell it for a few lakh rupees,” the officer added further.

A sample of the radioactive material has been sent by the CID officials to a government laboratory to verify if it’s Californium. A gram of this radioactive material costs around Rs 170 crores, News 18 reported citing police sources. It is used in nuclear reactors and detection of gold and silver in ores.

“The accused persons have said they got the material from Kerala and brought it here to sell. We are verifying all statements,” informed the officer further.

As per reports, the two accused have been arrested under the Atomic Energy Act and various other IPC sections. It is imperative to note that Californium is not found in nature and has to be produced in a lab.

“We believe these materials have been stolen from some laboratory. We have initiated a probe into this matter,” the officer said.

Kerala: Muslim League MLA threatened over anti-Taliban Facebook post, warned of Prof TJ Joseph like fate if not deleted in 24 hours

Senior Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) MLA and former Kerala minister MK Muneer received an anonymous threat letter on Wednesday, August 25, in which he was asked to pull down his anti-Taliban Facebook post or face dire consequences.

Muneer, who is an MLA from the Koduvally constituency in Kerala, had written a Facebook post on August 17, critical of the atrocities being committed by the radical Islamist outfit ever since it has recaptured Afghanistan. The former Kerala minister said that the Taliban stood for regressive politics that never respected human rights and called it anti-human and anti-women.

MK Muneer, however, has said that he will not take down Facebook post and will not compromise his stand against terrorism and extremism.

Letter accused the Muslim League MLA of being anti-Muslim

The anonymous letter, written in the name of “Taliban Oru Vismayam” (Taliban, a wonder), threatened the MLA to either delete his post and issue an apology in the next 24 hours or get killed. The letter also stated that his family would also be eliminated along with him. It warned him of a fate similar to that of Kerala professor TJ Joseph, who was attacked and had his palm chopped off by radicals as a punishment for the alleged irreverent reference to Prophet Mohammed in a question paper that he prepared in 2010.

The letter accuses the Muslim leader of being anti-Muslim and an RSS sympathiser since he attended a Shiv Sena function and a book launch ceremony hosted by BJP leader Sreedharan Pillai. The MLA’s actions, according to the letter, show that he believes in RSS ideologies.

The letter was posted from the Government Medical College area here, PTI reported. Upon receiving the letter, the MLA filed a complaint with police seeking an investigation into the matter.

Kerala Professor TJ Joseph attacked by radical Islamists for blasphemy

As per reports, on 4th July 2010, Joseph was returning home from Church with his family. His car was blocked by the seven member group near his residence in Muvattupuzha. The mob first attacked his car and broke windows and assaulted other family members of Joseph. Later, Saved allegedly pulled Joseph out and chopped off his palm accusing him of ridiculing Islam using his hand and that he should not write with his hand anymore. He was accused of preparing a question paper for second year B.Com students containing a reference to Prophet Muhammad.

Viral video: Taliban seen enjoying ride in a Blackhawk helicopter, though it is not flying

A video reportedly of the Taliban taxiing a Blackhawk helicopter at the Kandahar airport is doing rounds on social media. A Russian media house handle shared that the helicopter is under the Taliban occupation who are trying to take it for a joyride, but unable to do so.

In the video, the Blackhawk can be seen crawling at the Kandahar airport, struggling to get off the ground. However, The Drive, in its report suggests that there is no confirmation if the helicopter is being flown by the Taliban.

Billions worth of weapons and vehicles under Taliban control

With the US military’s hasty withdrawal, the Taliban has gained control over the abandoned weapons and vehicles.

Reports suggest that high-grade war equipment worth up to £13 billion has been seized by the Taliban. This includes 200,000 firearms (M24 snipers and assault weapons) and 20,000 Humvees captured from the Afghan army.

The US intelligence officers now fear that the Taliban might have access to over 150 helicopters and planes, including 45 UH-60 Blackhawk choppers.

Surprisingly, out of these 45, seven Blackhawks which cost around $21million each, arrived in Afghanistan just last month.

It has also been reported that dozens of aircraft from the former Afghan military have now left the country to airports in neighbouring Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. Resistance fighters battling the Taliban in Panjshir and nearby provinces had stated that hundreds of members of the Afghan military had joined them with their weapons.

However, it is difficult to get an accurate count of the fly machines under the Taliban control as there is not enough publicly available data. The US government is facing wide criticism for leaving their equipment behind for the Taliban to use and sell.

CBI registers nine cases related to post-poll violence in West Bengal, in the process of registering more

Following the Calcutta High Court’s order, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has begun probing the West Bengal post-poll violence and so far registered nine cases in the matter, reports news agency ANI. Reports suggest that CBI is in the process of registering more such cases.

All four special teams of the central investigating agency entrusted with examining the incidents of violent crimes, perpetrated by TMC goons in West Bengal in the backdrop of a sweeping victory for the ruling Trinamool Congress, have relocated from Kolkata to the places where the incidents of violence took place.

High Court hands over the West Bengal post-poll violence case to the CBI

The CBI has taken over the investigations on the orders of a five-judge panel of the Calcutta High Court, which on August 19, tasked the agency with a court-monitored probe into the innumerable murder and rape instances reported during West Bengal’s post-poll rioting which occurred in the aftermath of West Bengal Assembly elections in the month of May 2021.

The court had observed that the fact-finding report of the NHRC committee had exposed the police inaction, and hence the matter required independent investigation.

Pointing out at the state police apathy, working at the behest of WB CM Mamata Banerjee, the High Court noted that the registration of cases and investigation against the workers of the ruling TMC was slow, and in a number of cases, FIRs were registered only after the committee pointed out those. The court also noted that in over 60% of the cases, no FIR was filed by the police.

High Court constitutes SIT to look into other criminal cases related to post-poll violence

The high court also directed the state government to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the cases related to violence.

The SIT will be comprised of three IPS officers, Suman Bala Sahoo, Soumen Mitra and Ranbir Kumar, reported Bar and Bench. A report by Live Law states that the court has also directed the West Bengal state government to immediately process the compensation for the victims of the post-poll violence. The court also rejected state government allegations of bias against the NHRC.

The CBI and the SIT have to submit their reports within six weeks.

The bench had previously ordered the chairman of the National Human Rights Commission to form an inquiry group to look into allegations of human rights abuses during the post-election violence. The panel found in its report that the state’s current status is a manifestation of “Law of the Ruler” rather than “Rule of Law.” It goes on to say that victims’ lack of trust in the government is palpable. The statutory body added that a list of 57 complaints related to women was received from the National Women Commission.

Despite the victims’ testimonies about the savagery committed on them by the TMC goons, the Mamata Banerjee government had resisted the NHRC findings and questioned its neutrality.

‘No proof of Osama Bin Laden’s role in 9/11, USA used it as an excuse to attack Afghanistan’: Taliban

Taliban spokesperson Zabibullah Mujahid has claimed that there is no proof to assert that Osama Bin Laden was the mastermind involved in the 9/11 terror attack on the US. “It was used as an excuse by the Americans to wage war on Afghanistan,” said Mujahid.

Mujahid, while speaking to NBC News said, “Even after 20 years of war, there is no evidence of his (Osama bin Laden) involvement (in the September 11, 2001 terror attack in the US).”

Mujahid when asked if the Taliban will provide a safe haven to al-Qaeda, said that the Jihadi organization has repeatedly promised it will not let anyone use Afghan soil for terrorism.

“When Laden became a problem for the Americans, he was in Afghanistan. But there was no proof of his involvement and we have now promised that the Afghan soil won’t be used against anyone,” Mujahid said further.

“We respect women, they are our sisters. They should not be afraid. The Taliban have fought for the country. The women should be proud of us, not scared,” said Mujahid when asked about women in Afghanistan.

This is after reports of Taliban killing women have come to the fore including the murder of a woman by the Taliban for not wearing a hijab.

NBC also asked Mujahid about the thousands of Afghans waiting to flee the country. “We don’t want our countrymen to leave the country. Whatever they have done in the past, we have given them amnesty,” Mujahid said amid reports of Taliban conducting door-to-door searches.

Taliban have reportedly attacked and killed many interpreters who worked with the US Military and has launched a door-to-door hunt to catch hold of everyone who worked either with the government or the military.

“We need our country people, the young and educated folks for the nation. But if they want to leave, it’s their choice,” Mujahid said further.

Meanwhile, the Kabul airport and the country borders have slipped into complete chaos with people trying to evade the Taliban regime. There are at least 10,000 people at the Kabul airport waiting to be rescued.

Quad nations Australia, India, Japan, and the United States start Malabar exercise 2021 from today

India, the United States, Japan and Australia will kick off the 25th edition of the Malabar naval exercise off the coast of the Pacific island Guam on Thursday.

The latest edition – Malabar 21, will be held from August 26 to 29 in the Philippine Sea, off the coast of Guam. All the four members of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, shortly referred to as Quad, are participating in the exercise since 2020.

The exercise aims to increase interoperability amongst the participating navies, develop common understanding and SOPs for Maritime Security Operations, the Indian Navy said in a statement on Wednesday.

The Indian Navy has deployed two Indian warships – Frigate INS Shivalik and Anti-Submarine Corvette INS Kadmatt, a P-8I maritime reconnaissance aircraft, and the navy’s marine commandos (MARCOS) in this year’s Malabar exercise.

“The navies of the four quad nations will be holding exercises involving destroyers, frigates, corvettes, submarines, helicopters, long-range maritime patrol aircraft and elite special forces elements including the US Navy SEALs and MARCOS,” Indian Navy said in a statement to the press on August 25.

In 2020, the Quad navies had carried out complex naval exercises in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal.

The US Navy will be represented by an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, two tankers and P-8A long-range maritime patrol aircraft. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force has sent a helicopter carrier, two destroyers, a submarine and Kawasaki P1 maritime patrol aircraft, and the Royal Australian Navy has deployed a frigate. The exercise ends on August 29.

“A wide range of surface, sub-surface, and air operations will be carried out by the participating navies during the exercise. Special operations teams – US Navy SEALs, Indian MARCOS and Special Boarding Units of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF) – will carry out a visit, board, search, and seizure (VBSS) training and simulated hostage rescue operations,” a senior official said to the Hindustan Times.

The Malabar series of exercises, an annual bilateral naval exercise between India and the US, first began in 1992. The naval drills have attained significance in the last few years with the addition of Japan and Australia. Japan became a permanent partner in 2015, while Australia participated in the exercise in 2020 on India’s invitation, making it a full-time member of Quad.

Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra clears air over Arshad Nadeem moving around with his javelin on day of final game: Here is what he said

Athlete Neeraj Chopra has released a video on social media urging people to not misuse his comment given in a recent media interview to ‘further their agenda’. Chopra in a Times of India interview was quoted saying that he found his javelin to be with Pakistani athlete Arshad Nadeem just before his first throw at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.

This created a huge uproar on social media with people criticizing and mocking the Pakistani athlete alleging foul play. However, Chopra has now released a video to clear his stand.

In a short one-minute video, Chopra can be heard saying that his statement has been misconstrued. “We all have our personal javelins but anyone can use these javelins. This is the rule and Nadeem was just practicing using my javelin. There is nothing wrong with it,” said Chopra in the video.

The Times of India on Wednesday quoted Chopra saying, “I was searching for my javelin at the start of the final. I was not able to find it. Suddenly, I saw Arshad Nadeem was moving around with my javelin. Then I told him, ‘Bhai give this javelin to me. It is mine. I have to throw with it.’ He gave it back to me.”

Times of India quoting Neeraj Chopra

Apart from this the netizens also trended the video of the Olympic finals where Chopra can be seen taking his javelin back from Nadeem and throwing it hurriedly in the first attempt.

However, with this video statement, Chopra has put the controversy to rest.
